Fans of Food Network star Paula Deen enjoy her unpretentious Southern-gal persona as much as her easy, what's-not-to-like recipes. As a writer of four other cookbooks, including The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, restaurant owner, and purveyor of her own product line, she's also something of an entrepreneur. In Paul Deen Celebrates! she offers 170-plus recipes arranged by menus for traditional holidays and other, sometimes whimsical celebrations like Elvis's Birthday and Movie-Watching Pizza Party in Bed. The recipes, which are often Southern-rich, range from the more traditional, such as Shrimp Etouffé, Muffuletta Sandwiches, and Macaroni Salad, to the innovative, including Collard Green Wantons, Grilled Chicken Pita, and Scallop and Bacon Pizza. Her sweets include the likes of Old Fashioned Banana Pudding, Gooey Toffee Butter Cake and Margarita Mousse. Offered also are decorating tips, and "Paula's Pearls of Wisdom" like "treasure today's moment's because they will tomorrow's memories."
Deen's dishes couldn't be more approachable and will doubtlessly inspire many holiday menus. Readers should know, however, that she regularly calls for convenience products like cake mixes and canned soups, whose use (by now something of an American tradition in itself) can do little to make homemade food taste as good as it otherwise might. Paula Deen Celebrates! should, however, excite Deen's many fans, who, along with the attractive formulas, receive lots of "back-story" on the author's own celebrations, life, and mostly good times. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Beloved Food Network personality, restaurateur, and author Paula Deen loves a party, and in her latest book, Paula Deen Celebrates!, Paula shares with fans old and new how she celebrates a year's worth of holidays and special occasions. Now anyone can share in the down-home celebrations Paula, her husband, Michael, their kids, and extended family enjoy at their beautiful home in Savannah, Georgia.
What better way to start off the New Year than with a New Year's Eve Brunch with friends -- at midnight! This colorful celebration includes Crab and Spinach Casserole and Baked Tomatoes, and finishes with a quintessentially southern Hummingbird Cake and Irish Coffee. Welcome St. Patrick's Day, Savannah style, with Lamb Stew and Green Grits Pie. The centerpiece of an Easter dinner is a Peanut Butter-Glazed Ham, accompanied by Spinach-Swiss Casserole, Squash Boats, and flaky Butterhorns, with a bonus recipe for Ham Salad that makes eating leftovers a treat. Looking for a reason to party, south-of-the-border style? Try Paula's Cinco de Mayo Fiesta menu, with Macho Nachos and a cool and creamy Margarita Mousse. Paula honors the memory of her mother, and all the other women who have blessed her life, with a Mother's Day Tea of dainty sandwiches and irresistible cookies served on her best china, and fathers get their due with a Father's Day Boating Picnic. The Fourth of July is the perfect occasion for an Outdoor Grill Party and Low-Country Boil, and if what you want is a quiet evening at home, pop a movie in the DVD player and chow down on your choice of Paula's savory and sweet pizzas. Gather the family to watch some football and savor Jamie's Cheeseburger Pies, and give family and friends the gift of a sweet treat at the holidays with Paula's Icebox Fruitcake or Peppermint Bark. Her Christmas feast starts with Cranberry Holiday Brie and stars an impressive Standing Rib Roast, with Twice-Baked Potato Casserole. The show-stopping dessert is Paula's butter-laden Coconut Pound Cake glazed with coconut syrup and covered with icing and toasted coconut!
Paula brings you into her home, her kitchen, and her heart with family stories and photographs. This time, her husband, Michael, sons Jamie and Bobby, and brother, Bubba, chime in to share their memories, too. Decorating and serving ideas will inspire you to use what you have to carry through a theme to make the most informal meal special. And Paula shares her most private thoughts in a special feature -- Paula's Pearls of Wisdom -- which you'll find with each menu.
Paula Deen Celebrates! is Paula at her very southern best. Join her in making and sharing her best dishes for the best times of your life.

Paula Deen Celebrates!: Best Dishes and Best Wishes for the Best Times of Your Life
Hey Y'all,
I just love this book! I am from Northern Georgia, but we do things the same way, up here, as Paula does, down in South Georgia!
My friends and family tell me that I'm just like her??? Hahaha! We are just from the same roots! The only difference in mine and her cooking, is that we don't have fresh seafood! Oh well, Publix has a great seafood department! Wish we could get some fresh!
I just wish that she would put a recipe for cornbread and buttermilk and green onions on the side?? I know most Southerners loves this!
I love Paula, and will buy every book that she writes! She's a REAL Southern Belle!!!
Love and Kisses and Best Wishes for Paula's Dishes,

Book Description
Deep within each one of us lies the ability to step up and care for those in need, even though we often feel overwhelmed by a complex world. In fact, more than 200 million people throughout the world offer their time and love to volunteering. The stories in Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul highlight the efforts of everyday people in the United States and around the globe who volunteer with the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, the Peace Corps, Points of Light, Rotary and many, many other nonprofit organizations. Lovingly chosen from more than six thousand stories, poems and cartoons, these tales will inspire readers to do everything in their power to help those in need. Chapters include: The Rewards of Volunteering, Giving Back, Making a Difference, New Appreciation, Love and Kindness, Defining Moments, A Matter of Perspective, Overcoming Obstacles and On Wisdom. Readers will cherish the story of a community that rallied together to send warm winter coats to refugee families in Kosovo. They'll be moved by the tale of a woman with a "smiley voice" who made audiotapes for the visually impaired despite a losing battle with cancer. They'll never forget the eight-year-old boy without arms or legs who fearlessly wielded a tennis racquet to propel a ball down the length of a room. And they'll be charmed by a rabbit named Cadberi who brings boundless joy to residents of a nursing home. Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul will leave an indelible imprint on the heart of readers and inspire them to go forth and care for others.

Inspired to Volunteer.......2004-06-08
I just finished "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer Soul," which is an excellent and inspirational book. Also, a few weeks ago, I went on a Social and Service Justice Retreat. Since reading this book, making the retreat, and other inevitable signs, I feel inspired to find a place to volunteer.

I am a volunteer my self at the my cities animal shelter. And I am going to let the president of the volunteers borrow it after I am done. I hope they make more about volunteering.
An Insightful Invitation to Volunteers.......2003-01-11
I would recommend reading "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul" to anyone who has a sincere interest in his fellowmen and possesses the capacity to relate to the needs, sorrows, and joys of others. I was impressed by the work's intent, format, and content. The selections are comprehensive and meaningful, offering a wide range of volunteer experiences for the information, delight, compassion, and consideration to the book's readers. Hopefully, this publication will encourage countless individuals to find the necessary reason and desire to give of their own time, talents, and hearts to those in need in our society. For others, it will provide an understanding of the wonderful gifts of volunteering for the volunteer.
Thanks to everyone who read!.......2002-10-31
I contributed a story to this book about my daughter's tender heart for others. I have always been proud of her desire to help others and Chicken Soup gave me the opportunity to share it with the world. This book made me proud to be an American and to be allowed to live in this wonderful country that cares about it's neighbors. This collection of stories will enlighten anyone to give unselfishly to the needy or to those who have less. What a great feeling inside to be a part of it all!

If you consider eating with friends and family a joyful, indulgent celebration chances are you love a good feast. And who better to carefully guide you through the daunting task of preparing that Feast than the domestic goddess herself Nigella Lawson. Written in the tradition of Nigella Bites and How to Eat, Feast is a cookbook for the sensualist that wants to eat very well, but also wants to spend time enjoying the company of their guests instead of struggling with the creation of the meal. What sets Lawson apart is not that she's a good cookbook writer, but a strong writer period. Similar to her other books, Nigella's Feast is presented as part personal memoir, part educational, and part recipe presentation. There is a nice blend of occasions including the obvious (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and Easter), a few culturally specific ones (Rosh Hashanah, Georgian Feast, and Venetian Feast), feasts for kids, for vegetarians, and an elegant cocktail party. Each chapter begins with an overview of that particular "Feast." Generally, there is a personal story and experience told, an overview of the cultural importance of the feast, and a description of foods that are associated with each occasion. Impressively, every recipe begins with a personal anecdote giving that impression Nigella didn't just throw it in the book, but is experienced with the recipe and has used it with success. Take her twist on the decadent Chocolate Guinness Cake for example: "I wanted to make a cream cheese frosting to echo the pale head that sits on top of a glass of stout. It's unconventional to add cream but it makes it frothier and lighter which I regard as aesthetically and gastronomically desirable." Who can argue? The cake is to die for. So next time you need to prepare a dinner party let the goddess be your guide, and remember: Keep the preparation simple, use easily available ingredients, and take time to enjoy your guests and your meal. Feast may not be the most advanced cookbook you will own, but if you want to create excellent food with relative ease in a short amount of time, you can not beat Nigella. --Rob Bracco

And like her other cookbooks, Feast is a cookbook that will be treasured all year long.

Cold curdled vomit.......2007-10-04
Charly and his wife, Nigella, have acheived royalty here in the UK.
Lucky for us, she was raised in the shires on a diet of liver and cows milk. This has fortunately given her a fat lip and her jaw line is reported to be bigger then her shoulder blades.
She ransacks the refridgerator every night for bits of raw meat to feast on and feeds her husband homemade donuts which he endlessly vomits over time and time again.
So expect only the best from this beautiful woman. She certainly deserves his expertiZe in making everyone suffer like Charly's father, an isreali expert victorious in something or other.
Robocop hand slide.
Review for the baking recipes.......2007-05-25
I have all but one of Nigella's cookbooks and this is my favorite. Since I bake rather than cook a lot this review focuses on the baking recipes. After having made a lot of the recipes from this book and her others I have been disappointed more than I thought I would be. Some of the recipes turn out very dry. But this book offers a unique layout by feast and/or holiday and some good, potentially great recipes if they were just tweaked or reworked a little- like the Chocolate Truffle Cake, Lemon Meringue Cake and Chocolate Gingerbread. The only problems are that some of the recipes are not exact enough or have some issues. For instance, with the truffle cake some people complained that the thin layer of cocoa sifted on top made them choke, but the cake and meringue crust were a hit. Also, she does not mention in this recipe that if you do not slowly add a little of the melted chocoalte to the cream them mix the rest in you can get little grainy chocolate pieces rather than a smooth base. The lemon meringue cake is also beautiful, but I would recommend just doing meringue disks, cream and curd and not the cake part since it is SO DRY. The chocolate gingerbread is utter bliss though. The pictures are utterly amazing and the stories behind them are fun to read.I also liked the way the book is set up kinda by holiday rather than the traditional appetizers, main course, desserts, etc. here little background jaunts over where she found or came up with the recipes is a pleasure to read and she is very descriptive in a very sensual way. For some this may be a little tiring. Another plus, this is a big cookbook with lots of recipes andd color pics, which is just great. It's a beautiful cookbook with fun, vibrant, sensual dishes. Overall, I'd recommend this book as her best work so far. If you are a some what experienced home baker able to see some minor flaws in recipes and be creative in re-working the recipes and enjoy being inspired by dishes I'd recommend picking this up.
love her!.......2007-05-11
I love her books and would highly recommend each of them. I have three of her books and use Domestic Goddess the most, but I think this new one might be used plenty. I love reading them and keep them by my bedside. she is such a great writer besides giving all kinds of great tips and recipes.
Nigella thinks up the best recipes for both sides of the pond.......2007-03-14
I love her holiday recipes...a mix of English and American customs. Nice to see someone in Europe celebrating American delights such as the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner along with pumpkins, cranberries, maple syrup, and other native food items of North America.
One let down was the recipe for the old fashioned chocolate cake. While it looked yummy when I baked it, it came out a little dry. Was worried about that when I noticed the very thick batter. Guess I will have to experiment with the recipe a little more...it was easy to make, though.
Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-25
This cookbook has many great recipes! I've made a lot of the dishes and everyone thinks I'm a gourmet cook, I guess I really just pick the best cookbooks. I have Forever Summer and I'm buying her other two books, they have so many recipes with normal foods, no wacky ingredients. You really can cook for a crowd without going broke or cook for just your family (they will love these recipes). My only warning is that you will have to have recipe cards ready when you have friends and family over when cooking from this book!

An effective and innovative loosener for artists.......2007-09-11
This book presents simple exploratory exercises for acrylic paints that create novel and brilliant effects. The text is closely tied to the pictures, rather than stating generalities. The author is perhaps sponsored by Golden Paints, who I suspect of mounting a highly diverse and slightly annoying public relations effort through workshops and "how-to" books. Nevertheless, I have already learned a lot fom "25 Exercises".
Excellent!.......2007-07-09
Have enjoyed playing with all the ideas in this book. The exercises are very well presented and make great 'starts' in spurring your imagination.
Instant inspiration.......2007-03-28
The illustrations and suggestions in this beautiful book are an instant inspiration for any artist wanting to explore new methods and mediums, or make new uses of old ones. It made me want to run to my studio and try everything!
Creativity... For Those With More Experience.......2007-01-29
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate to Expert
I checked out this book from my local library to see if this was a book I would buy. Although I found Ms. Beam's book highly accessible to an art novice like myself, I found most of the projects more suitiable to those with more art experience. Also, I felt the title was a bit misleading. It should be titled, " Celebrate Your Creative Self: Over 25 Exercises to Unleash the Abstract Painter Within". The pictures are big enough to study each technique clearly and the instructions are thorough for determined beginners to complete the projects at the beginning of the book (the projects get progressively more challenging). In addition, the book lays flat, so it can propped on a book stand or lay on a table without damaging the spine. If you want to explore your abstract side it's a good find, but there are better books on creativity.
Celebrate Your Creative Self: Over 25 Exercises to Unleash the Artist Within.......2007-01-11
What a wonderful book to unleash your creativity. When I began reading it I couldn't wait to get out my brushes, canvas and get started. It teaches you to just be relaxed and let your innerself come out in your creations. It is a marvalous feeling. You can't go wrong. If you have been shy with acrylic paint you won't be for long when you get into this book.

Good for inspiration on building a business.......2006-10-17
We're all familiar with the Chicken Soup series so no need to talk about layout and all ... this book has some good, inspiring stories of real entreprenuers, many you'll know telling how they got where they are. I use it for inspiration, read one a night and keep youre head on straight. Short review but good book, not a lot to say further.
What are you waiting for?.......2006-03-27
Like a lot of people, men in particular, I've seen this "Chicken Soup" series of books for years now, but had never read one. That is, until my daughter gave me a copy of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE FATHER AND DAUGHTER SOUL, as a gift recently. I have to admit, it isn't just filled with mushy stories like I expected, but rather is a collection of various circumstances revolving around the special relationship between a man and his daughter.
These are real stories, written by real people, about real events that are similar to what all father/ daughter relationships go through. This particular volume is broken into 9 different chapters, each covering different components of life's happenings, and each with about a dozen or so stories somehow related to the subject matter of that chapter.
The book is also sprinkled with a handful of cartoon joke pages. The book concludes with a one page bio on each of the five authors and a single paragraph bio on each contributor. This book will make you laugh. It will make you cru. Mostly, it will preserve and strengthen the special blessing in life that is like no other, .... The relationship of father and his princess.
...precious memories, sweetest moments..........2005-06-13
What is the understood miracle about the relationship of a daddy with his daughter or a daughter with her daddy? Jack Canfield shares many precious memories and sweetest moments with these heartwarming recollections that allude to the beautiful mystery of the daddy/daughter connection. From one story to the next, the daddy/daughter heart and soul exudes deepest love so graciously and gratefully. Whether through laughter or tears, the emotions felt from reading these stories brought forth many of my own forgotten memories. WOW!!!Thanks to Jack and Mark for sharing this fantastic collection that, once again, focuses on the best 'stuff' in Life.
Simply marvelous stories to captivate the soul........2005-05-04
Kudos to Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Nancy Autio, Patty Aubery and LeAnn Thieman for compiling the wonderful stories in Chicken Soup for the Father/Daughter Soul. My story, Hidden Wings is included in the book and I am proud to be a part of the Chicken Soup series. Thanks to all of you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful episode. All the stories will leave you breathless, yearning for childlike thoughts of the past embracing you with tenderness and love.

The Frugal Gourmet Celebrates Christmas.......2002-08-04
This is the first recipe book I ever sat down and read from cover to cover. It has become one of my Christmas traditions, and one I share with friends and family by giving it as a gift.
Jeff Smith shares a lot of his personal feelings about the significance of Christmas, and his writing is obviously based on historical research. In a charming progression, he takes us through the events of the first Christmas and designates a feast including a special dish for each of the characters involved, from the Christ child Himself, to the angels, to even the beasts.

This book takes you through the history and traditions of Christmas, with full meals illustrated. My favorites - The crown roast of pork, with sausage stuffing. Favorite side dishes include brussels sprouts with balsamic vinegar and baked onions. A great read, and a must-have for the holidays.

Book Description
Whether she is a corporate executive or a factory worker, an entrepreneur or a "mompreneur," today's woman is an integral part of the workforce and the American Dream. Women have made inroads in many professions that were once the domain of only men while juggling the many demands of work and family. From the woman who manages a staff of fifty, to the mother who choreographs the comings and goings of a family of five, women are the ultimate multitaskers. This collection celebrates the diversity and special contributions of women in the world of work-their hopes, their dreams and aspirations, and their accomplishments. This very special book also acknowledges the important and often unappreciated women in the homeplace through stories of stay-at-home moms for whom raising children was their most important task. These tales recognize the vital contributions of women who find their reward in devoting their lives to their families instead of collecting a paycheck. Chapters include: All in a Day's Work; Balancing Work and Family; Teamwork; Special Moments, and more, and each shares the trials of working women and the special joys that achieving career dreams can bring. Readers will laugh, cry and nod in agreement as they connect with women who are not just making a living, but making a life.
Customer Reviews:
All around wonderful book.......2005-01-19
This book will lift your spirits any day no matter how bad a day it has been. This shows so many things that women in the workplace encounter and also the lighter side of things. Great book. I especially like it because the stories are short so you don't need a lot of time to get a quick lift.
Take Care of Your Soul!.......2003-09-15
Every woman alive is a working woman, no matter whether she has a husband and/or children, or not. There are daily struggles with family, weekly struggles with work and ultimately, very emotional struggles with just living! Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul is a moment of relaxation. It's a chance for a woman to sit down with a soothing drink, put her feet up and dive into the issues that we all face - as seen through the eyes of our peers. As a mom, it's a chance for me to see that my kids aren't as wild as I sometimes feel they are ... as a woman, it was the opportunity to see that work and balancing issues happen to everyone ... and as a wife, it gave me a firm appreciation for the amount of work that my husband and I accomplish as we take care of our family. The one point of this book that isn't mentioned enough is that our souls need to be in shape before we can contend with the world around us. Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul gives a woman a chance to parlay her soul into the being that she wants it to be, while allowing us to view inside a slice of another's soul. It's thought provoking, entertaining and reassuring to see that other women are in the same places in their lives that we have been with various issues. It's a chit-chat, without the other person sitting in front of you. I believe this is one of those books that you read, set on your bookshelf, and read again when the world around you is pulling you in every direction. It's a safe haven in turmoil, and it's a chance for a woman to recharge after a rough one! It's, well, it's chicken soup for the working woman's soul!

Of all our degraders, our self-critics are the most adept. Gathering a sense of self-worth in the midst of our rodent doubts requires resolve and inner resources not easy to recoup. Matthew McKay, a brief therapy specialist and his cohorts, present fifty simple exercises that enable readers to inventory themselves and master self-compassion.

Affirmations of the Sanctity of Words and Life and Spirit!.......2007-08-31
I found this little paperback book, "Life Prayers" at the local library sale and it jumped off the table into my eagerly awaiting hands. If you love anthologies which introduce you to new and old favorite authors, you'll love this book! I am too blessed, too fortunate, to have these amazing words which are beyond prayers, but are affirmations of life's longing for itself. The poem I have posted below (in itself worth the price of the entire book!) is from this book which boasts works from over 100 authors! It's a literary feast to be slowly and deliciously devoured and digested.
Here are the chapter headings:
1. Affirmations and Invocation
2. Kinship With All Life
3. The Dark Night of Our Soul
4. Prayers for Solidarity and Justice
5. Womansprayer
6. Initiation (Birth, Coming of Age, Courtship, Marriage Vows & Blessings, Healing Prayers, Midlife, Growing Older, Death).
7. Moments of Grace and Illumination
8. Earth Praises
****************************
Before Jesus Was His Mother
Before Jesus
was his mother.
Before supper
in the upper room,
breakfast in the barn.
Before the Passover Feast,
a feeding trough.
And here, the altar of Earth,
fair linens of hay and seed.
Before his cry,
her cry.
Before his sweat of blood,
her bleeding and tears.
Before his offering,
hers.
Before the breaking of bread and death,
the breaking of her body in birth.
Before the offering of the cup,
the offering of her breast.
Before his blood,
her blood.
And by her body and blood alone,
his body and blood and whole human being.
The wise ones knelt
to hear the woman's word in wonder.
Holding up her sacred child,
her God in the form of a babe,
she said: "Receive and let your hearts be healed
and your lives he filled with love,
for This is my body,
This is my blood."

Not my cup of tea!.......2007-05-17
I had purchased this book as a reference for sacred space consultations, in particular with blessings and personal healing. I have since returned this book as I found it not very relevant to my purpose. The prayers are a wish washy and a more poetic rather than powerful.
Great resource for reflection.......2007-01-04
This book proved to be a great resource for finding quotes, poems or prayers to provoke service related discussion on a college campus.
A Wonderful Book of Prayers.......2004-10-23
I buy other books of prayer and keep coming back to this one. Beautiful collection and variety of prayers.
A generous serving of gratitude.......1999-12-09
I am always on the lookout for any reminder of the beauty and wonder of living. In Life Prayers, I found a generous serving. Here is a book to carry you through the ordinary days of living and the not so ordinary times in life when we are caught off guard and lose our way. This eclectic mix of prayers, blessings and affirmations, will help you find your way back to a heart of gratitude. Its very earthy quality, carries on the tradition of reverence for all life which was started in the first book: "Earth Prayers". Here is a warm gift to give others who are just beginning their spiritual journey, as well as for those of us who have been walking the path for awhile now. If you enjoyed such books as Jon Kabat-Zinn's"Wherever You Go There You Are" or Andrew Harvey's "Light Upon Light" then you will love Life Prayers. Early on in "Life Prayers" there is this reminder: "Empower me to be a bold participant, rather than a timid saint in waiting, in the difficult ordinariness of now;" This book is not aimed at anyone spiritual or religious outlook. It is a reminder of the beauty to be found in our daily living. Many of these are sweet pieces I have never seen before, and some and like old friends. "May those whose lives are gripped in the palm of suffering open even now to the Wonder of Life. May they let go of the hurt and Meet the True Self beyond pain, the Uncarved Block that is our joyous Unity with Holiness...." There are prayers and affirmations, meditations and reminders, enough to read a new one every day of the year, but I think you will find that you can't read just one a day. I encourage you to give this gift to yourself.
