Customer Reviews:
The best sandwich book I've purchased!.......2007-08-05
From the book, "Great sandwiches start with great ingredients, homemade mayonnaise..." The condiment recipes are my favorites (Oven-Roasted Tomatoes (I can eat these everyday), Hot Mustard (awesome), Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise, Lemon Mayonnaise, Balsamic Roasted Garlic--just to name a few). They add so much to the sandwiches.
In addition to the great recipes there is a chapter called "The Basics" in which they explain all the different breads, cheeses, meats, oils and vinegars they use in their recipes. It is quite informative.
I think this would make a great gift for anyone interested in cooking or eating :o)
Great Taste !.......2007-06-29
I just got a Panini maker and was looking for more recipes than what came with the unit. I purchased this one - have made 6 varieties of panini and overall, they were all great ! The book also introduced me to various cheeses as well as to some fantastic accompaniments such as Sun-dried tomato pesto; pickled onions; Peperonata to name a few. In addition to Pananis', there are also recipes for antipasti, salads, tramezzini and bruchetta. This is a book well worth having.
Recipe didn't work.......2007-06-12
The first item I made from this book, Oven-Roasted Tomotoes, didn't work at all. I would be glad to change my rating of this book if someone knows what went wrong. It said to roast at 275 degrees for 20 minutes, baste again with Balsamic (for a total of 1/2-cup), then cook another 20 minutes. Nothing happened after the first 20 minutes because the temp was too low. My oven was pre-heated. I checked for a recipe on Epicurious, and it had baking at 350 for 1 hour... not sure what happened, but it doesn't instill confidence in the book.
Living la dolce vita.......2007-05-29
I would not have thought I would be persuaded to purchase a "cook book" with the abundance of recipes available to me for free on the internet, but I'm glad other reviewers convinced me. I read it cover to cover as soon as it arrived-and my mouth watered the entire time! It really is lovely and full of easy, delicious recipes that exploit the fact that simple ingredients really are the basis of good cooking. I don't think any foodie would be disappointed to add this book to his/her collection.
Make Your Own Panini - Just Like you Found in Italy..........2007-04-16
Oh, if you could smell the heavenly scents emanating from my kitchen right now, you would know why I'm so enamored of this latest addition to my cookbook collection !
I first fell in love with panini during an escorted tour to Italy two years ago that involved several hours in the bus on alternate days. The highlight of the bus trip was the mid-day stop at the ubiquitous roadside restaurant chain known as AutoGrill - far more varied and satisfying than the typical fast food chain restaurant choices that you find on the interstate in the U.S. Every AutoGrill featured fresh-made panini, assembled with just a few fresh and simple ingredients, quickly melded together by a press in the hot grill. I tried unsuccessfully to find comparable sandwiches back in California. Many delis offered sandwiches billed as "panini" but they lacked the authentic flavors and construction of their Italian namesakes.
I received a panini grill as a Christmas gift so that I could try my hand at making panini at home, but was disappointed with the meager cook book that accompanied the grill. I researched specialty cookbooks dedicated to the subject of panini and discovered that "Simple Italian Sandwiches" fit the bill exactly. I was delighted to read in the foreword by Mario Batali that his favorite place to eat in Italy is also the AutoGrill which he called "temples of gastronomic magnificence".
The authors, Jennifer and Jason Denton, also fell in love with the little toasted sandwiches during a trip to Italy and established a tiny Greenwich Village restaurant called `ino that featured the foods they had come to love in Italy. Their recipes offer "maximum flavor and minimal cooking" allowing the cooks to spend more time with their guests.
Before I delved into the panini recipes in "Simple Italian Sandwiches" I purchased warm, soft ciabatta rolls, fresh mozzarella, a wonderfully aromatic wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano, Asiago, Prosciutto di Parma, campari tomatoes on the vine and extra virgin olive oil. You're probably thinking by now that I spent a fortune and traveled far and wide to collect these essential panini ingredients. To the contrary, it required just one trip to the local Costco and cost far less than if I had gone to the expensive Italian deli nearby. As suggested by the authors, I shopped for top quality ingredients and prepared the condimenti myself from scratch. These included fresh basil pesto, balsamic roasted garlic, oven roasted tomatoes and peperonata - diced bell peppers slowly roasted with balsamic vinegar and herbs in olive oil.
The cookbook includes 6 sections:
Basics - the list of suggested top-quality ingredients - breads, meats, cheeses.
Condimenti - including pesto, mayonnaise, roasted garlic, oven-roasted tomatoes, etc.
Panini - 19 recipes
Bruschetta - 15 recipes
Tramezzini - 9 recipes
Antipasti, Merende and Insalate - interesting accompaniments to the sandwiches
I had been expecting a cookbook entirely consisting of panini recipes, but the bruschetta and tramezzini recipes are an enjoyable bonus. I hadn't thought of bruschetta as a type of sandwich, but it's essentially an open face sandwich with delicious fresh ingredients piled on a small slice of crusty, toasted bread. Tramezzini, which means "little something in the middle", are crustless, petite sandwiches made on moist, fresh white bread. The fillings are simple and flavorful, just as with the panini, but the sandwiches are not toasted.
The recipes are very simply presented, one per page, with a nice, crisp typeface and plenty of whitespace to allow you to make your "cook's notes". A column of ingredients and quantities is printed on the left side of the page (reinforcing how few ingredients there are in most of the recipes), with the instructions in step by step form on the right side. Full color photos (46 in total) accompany many of the recipes, helping you to select the recipe that appeals to your appetite and available ingredients and offering attractive serving suggestions.
Panini (and the other Italian sandwiches featured in the book) are an excellent addition to the repertoire of a busy cook, perfect for families on the run and working cooks with little time and energy for cooking after a long day at work. And "Simple Italian Sandwiches" provides a sufficient variety of enticing and practical recipes to ensure that your panini grill earns a permanent spot among the most useful appliances in your kitchen.
Book Description
This book is intended to be a useful cluster of quick and simple recipes. All are made with common ingredients and fresh produce available in most grocery stores. In Healthy Cooking for One, each dish has been designed to serve one, in sytle.
Fast food restaurants are not my favourite as they are mostly high in fats, carbohydrates and calories, and while fast food restaurants offer biggie sizes, I prefer the small sizes. When you talk about eating well, size matters. I like to cook my own food, because it is fresh, tasty and gives me control over the serving portion and the amount of fats that I intake. Even though I have a full time job; I prefer to dedicate a short time to prepare my own meals. I look for tasty and fast recipes that allow me some evening time for myself, while still eating well. Long cooking projects are being left for another book; this one is dedicated to those after-work, early-evening meals and snacks full of taste that can be made in a short time.
Being a single mom demands cooking in small portions and minimizing leftovers. Unlike others who might prefer to cook large amounts and leave leftovers for the next day, I would rather cook a smaller quantity of food of food and have minimal leftovers. For my taste, freshly prepared food just tastes better.
I choose fresh products: roots, fruits and vegetables. My favourite dishes range from sandwiches, dips and salads to stirfrys, all with a potpourri of different flavours.
If you are looking for ideas to prepare quick, tasty dishes, in single portions. . .this book is for you.
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2006-09-25
This cookbook was a TOTAL waste of money. The recipes were so simple that a young child could do better without a cookbook.
No nutritional information!.......2006-08-29
How can a book that proclaims itself as a healthy cookbook not have any nutritional information on any of the recipes? There were very few (black and white!) pictures and all the recipes seemed boring and uninspired. I would not recommend this book to anyone that likes food.
different style.......2005-12-28
This book offers a different style and taste; I like the simple and quick recipes, good for those who like small portions instead of a heavy meal.
Not worth the money.......2005-11-18
I was excited to get this book, hoping for some great ideas for meals for one. Instead what I got was a book with plenty of "dip" recipes and salad dressing recipes. Also a section on the cooking of plantains. There is one recipe with beef (ground beef with frozen veggies... yum! not!) and one with chicken. Save your money and forget this book. I may just return it and get my money back.
Inspiring book with good taste.......2004-09-22
Very nice addition to my cookbook collection. I have a tendency to think bigger and complicated is better. This book is a very nice reminder that the right combination of foods can go very well together quickly and without too much fuss. Simple living is alive and well and sometimes it tastes good too. Photos make the cookbook for me and this one has photos that say it all.

Customer Reviews:
Still love it........2007-03-25
I bought this book over ten years ago, after I saw the chocolate sandwich on the cover. Tried it and LOVED it, as did my son. From there I just worked my way through the book and I can't remember being unhappy with anything I made from it. Surprised by the negative reviews posted just under mine but I guess if its not what you're expecting, then you're going to be disappointed.
That said, it's a fabulous sandwich book.
What was the point ???.......2007-03-09
I could of gotten better recipes off the web and for free.
Not what I expected.......2007-02-12
This recipe book was recommended with the panini grill - but it has very few grilled recipes. Not what I expected at all.
Not a good italian panini cook book.......2007-01-10
This book is not quite what I thought it was going to be. If you are interested in more dinner/lunch panini (italian) sandwich type cookbooks look elsewhere.
Hot sandwitches.......2007-01-04
A lot of good recipies to try, not what kids would like

Book Description
Lightweight sandwich construction, which uses two thin metal sheets sandwiched with a layer of insulation, is now used widely for factories and warehouses. However, designers are faced with a range of problems, including insulation and condensation, durability and fire spread, and there is little authoritative guidance on the subject. This book brings together a group of European experts to provide practical information for designers, specifiers and manufacturers.
Book Description
Being a monster isn't all frightening villagers and sucking blood. Monsters have their trials, too. Poor Frankenstein's cupboard is bare, Wolfman is in need of some household help, and it's best not to get started on Dracula’s hygiene issues. What could be scarier?
Nineteen hilarious poems delve into the secret lives of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bigfoot, Godzilla, and others. In a range of styles that pay homage to everyone from Charles Schulz to John James Audubon, the monstrously talented Adam Rex uncovers horrific--and clever--truths you won't want to miss.
Customer Reviews:
My son couldn't wait.............2007-10-07
...to get this book. He checked it out at the library and then beggged me to buy it. He says, "I love it so much. It has good poems like the Yeti and the Big Foot one, and Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich...it should not have low star ratings because it is the best book in the world! I wish I could meet the author!"....what more does a parent need to say? Buy the book!
P.S. He likes "An Open Letter from Wolfman's best Friend" too!
Very, Very Good!.......2007-05-23
This long titled book is a collection of Adam Rex's short rhyming tales about the classic monsters. Hard core fan critics of particular monsters may well point out that Frankenstein was actually the scientist who created the monster but obviously referring to the creature as Frankenstein's Monster would make the rhyming hard and increase the already lengthy title of this book as well so I don't think we should be too picky. Adam Rex has also drawn spectacular colour illustrations on every page which are full of detail. You'll even find miniature rhyming verses and picture references to other monsters within such as The Invisible Man on a milk carton with the words Have You Seen Me? being carried by the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the rhyme about that character.
Horror's classic characters who have tales inside include Griffin from H.G. Well's story The Invisible Man. Frankenstein's monster from Mary Shelley's classic tale. The Creature of the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera (he must have been the author's favourite as he has a few stories within), Witches, Wolfman (well his best friend's letter to him anyway), Count Dracula, The Mummy, Yeti, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr Jekyll, Zombies, Bigfoot, Godzilla and the most terrifying monster of all - the Dentist!
This is a very entertaining and funny book. The illustrations mean it will appeal to children as well as adults.
Frankenstein Makes Us Laugh.......2007-04-13
I bought this for my seven year old son who is NOT a poetry fan, and he LOVES it. He even asked if he could take it to school and read his favorite poem, The Creature from the Black Lagoon Doesn't Wait an Hour Before Swimming, out loud to his class. This is a boy who is not a fan of oral reading, ESPECIALLY in front of his classmates! He and I also get the Phantom of the Opera songs stuck in our heads, and walk around singing "There was a phantom had a song and BINGO was its name-o," and "All around the Opera House the Phantom throws a tantrum. The song won't die -- he doesn't know why. "Stop!" goes the Phantom."
All three of my kids enjoy the poems and pictures in this book, but I think it particularly appeals to boys who might otherwise not be very interested in poetry. (I have previously bought books of outer space poems and transportation poems for my son, and he was not interested in them at all.)
I will buy this book as a gift for several other kids!
Frankenstein Makes a family laugh & appreciate poetry.......2007-02-27
We borrowed this book from our town library for our children ages 7-12. Ben 2nd grade, Jack 3rd grade and Geneva 6th grade LOVED THIS BOOK! Parents that watched those 60's monster movie classics will love how those monsters all appear in this book of hilarious poems. The boys especially liked the Phantom of the Opera poem set to B-I-N-G-O.
There was a phantom had a song, and BINGO was it's name-o. B-I-N-G-O See? I told you so. B-I-N-G-O By jingo! What a lame-o.
It bugged the Phantom all night long. He never was the same-o. (clap) His cheeks don't show, (clap) if they did though, (clap) we'd see them glow flamingo pink with shame-o.
At least the phantom knows it's wrong, It caused him to proclaim-o,
(clap)(clap)"I'll have no...(clap)(clap)peace, and so...(clap)(clap) I'll just go and haunt a bingo game-o."
Classic poetry, not, but a lot of family fun and reading enthusiasm, so. I brought this book to the computer to write my review and the kids took it to run off and read it and laugh over. What more do you want from a children's book? We are buying this book as a gift to our school library and also friends' birthdays. Parents will appreciate the joy this book brings to their kids.
great job.......2007-02-15
Well done. I recieved the book in about three days and the quality is great. I now prefer Amazon over paying a fortune at Barnes abd Nobel and Borders. The book is beautifull!!! I am a Rex fan for life!
Thanks
Book Description
A practical guide to bridging the generation gap.
In How to Say It(r) to Seniors, geriatric psychology expert David Solie offers help in removing the typical communication blocks many experience with the elderly. By sharing his insights into the later stages of life, Solie helps in understanding the unique perspective of seniors, and provides the tools to relate to them.
Customer Reviews:
Peace be With You.......2007-09-07
By profession I am an estate planner. I have ushered both parents from this earth after confronting their very real crises in their search for answers in what their limited future would hold for them.
Mr. Solie addresses our frustrations in communicating with the elderly. I am embarassed at my annoyance with my parents for what was their pain. A pain I could not feel because I did not understand.
Mr. Solie's concept is simple: Our "problem" with seniors and their quirks is their search for a peace of mind at life's end. This revelation elevates an obligation of a child in putting up with "irrational" seniors to the act of offering them a path to mental balance. Put this way, the relationship approaches being a holy task.
More than this, understanding Mr. Solie's insight, offers all of us a guide to our own search for meaning in lives that often turned out much different than we thought they would.
Senior communication.......2007-07-09
An easy to read book with a very powerful message. We as a society need to redevelop a respect for our seniors. Because, after all, we will all be there sooner than we think.
This book describes human development stages, including the one seniors go thru toward the end of their lives. It really is the most important, but least understood phase of our development.
As a senior advocate, I would like to see this information rolled into our educational system, because it's so important to us all.
If you have a senior family member, friend or client please get a copy for yourself. I think that you'll find yourself ordering additional copies for others.
How To Say It to Seniors is a book for everyone.......2007-06-02
David Solie was a speaker at a conference I attended this spring. Along with getting to hear him speak, I obtained a copy of his book, "How to Say it to Seniors". I went home and tried some of these strategies with my mother and the results were astounding. The book was easy to read and understand as Mr. Solie uses entertaining stories to illustrate his message.
I have now purchased 5 more of these books and have donated one to my church library, one to our parish nurse, one to my mother and will be making this book available to all my clients as this book, and the techniques contained within, go far beyond my professional use of these strategies. This is a book for everyone who has an aged parent, grand-parent, elderly neighbor, or who deals with elderly people, either professionally, or on a personal level.
Excellent Resource - Linda E........2006-11-05
This book is an excellent resource regarding communication with elders. It is crucial to recognize that seniors have issues, real concerns and fears that we don't understand. The book has helped me to see how listening to what my parents have to say is extremely important. The stories they tell should be heard and appreciated.
An Important Book for Caregives.......2006-06-10
There are many books on how to care and plan for an elderly person, but this is one of the few designed to deal with the often delicate issue of communicating about those plans. This is an excellent book for anyone caring for seniors, either as a family member or in a professional capacity. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply business. In both capacities I work with many seniors and those who care for them. This book fills in an important gap in the caregiving relationship. I strongly recommend it.
Book Description
Brie and apricot jam on a baguette; spinach and goat cheese on a croissant; blue cheese and fresh figs on crusty Italian bread: this is not your mother's grilled cheese sandwich. In Great Grilled Cheese, cheese expert and award-winning cookbook author Laura Werlin presents 50 scrumptious grilled cheese and panini recipes that range from the traditional to the contemporary. In addition to the more inventive combinations, including grilled cheese for dessert, there's always room at the table for the classics: grilled American on white, or apple, ham, and cheddar on sourdough.
Werlin discusses techniques-nonstick versus cast-iron pan, whether to cover during cooking, how to use the ultrapopular panini machine. Maren Caruso's tantalizing photographs perfectly convey the appeal of creamy melted cheese pressed between two slices of crisp, buttery bread. For cheese aficionados, parents whose kids insist on grilled cheese at every meal, and the kid in all of us who craves comfort food, Great Grilled Cheese will satisfy everyone's cheese dreams. AUTHOR BIO: LAURA WERLIN, who won a 2004 James Beard Award for her book The All American Cheese and Wine Book, is a food journalist and cheese expert whose articles have appeared in Saveur, Cooking Light, and Country Living. In addition to having written two books on cheese, The New American Cheese (2000) and The All American Cheese and Wine Book (2003), Werlin writes a biweekly syndicated column on cheese.
MAREN CARUSO is a San Francisco-based photographer who specializes in food photography. Her work has appeared in Wine and Spirits, Chocolatier, and Taste magazines, and in more than ten books, including Grilling and Barbecuing (STC).
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding recipes!.......2006-12-14
This is my favorite of my 5 panini recipe books. I bought it when I got my Cuisinart Griddler with Panini Grill. These sandwiches are truly fantastic. Some of the other books have some really wierd combinations and only a few recipes that sound appetizing, but this book is a real winner. These hot sandwiches are very addicting...delicious and so fast and easy to make!
A cheese addict's bible.......2006-06-24
The recipes are imaginative, the directions are clear, the results are sublime. My only question is, I look at her photograph and ask, how can the author look so slender?!
Yum!.......2005-12-11
Some of the most delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and quesadillas I've ever had. I use this book every weekend.

Customer Reviews:
Delicious.......2007-08-01
This is a great little book - full of commonsense ideas for vegetarian fillings and delicious different fillings as well. I really like it and am glad I bought it.
Good Stuff.......2005-10-02
This recipe book is beautifully done, easy to read, and the pictures are great, too. I've only made one recipe - the Sweet Potato and Avacado Sandwich- easy to make and waaayyyy delicious!
Yummy recipes; beautiful book; a little pedantic.......2003-05-26
This is my second Paulette Mitchell book, and if you're an unsophisticated cook I'm sure the "Tips" she puts on every page will be helpful. I often find them somewhat patronizing, however - defining roma tomatoes, or describing spinach (!), or saying freshly ground pepper is better than pre-ground (well, duh), for example - really basic things like that. She seems to assume her readers are novices, as she did in her book "The 15-Minute Vegetarian Gourmet." Her recipes are great, though, and more sophisticated than her writing and those in her previous book. This book is gorgeous, and as a vegetarian I am always on the hunt for creative lunch ideas. She also has great ideas for preparing your pantry so you always have ingredients on hand to use in these recipes. All in all, a winner.
Great!.......2003-01-20
I had been looking for a book like this for awhile since on the weekends I like to throw together something for lunch but had been running out of ideas. This book got me going again. I love it! Everything I've tried has been great - vegetarians and non have liked everything I've made so far. There are some great spreads in here like the basil pesto, the hummus, the herb butter, the mushroom with almond spread, etc. These can be slathered on the bread and then just add veggies to that or you can do some of the full sandwiches like the Sweet Potato and Avocado sandwich, the grilled eggplant with olive/tomato spread sandwich, the dilled egg salad sandwich, veggie melts etc. Thumbs up on this one!
Not One Bad Recipe.......2001-10-09
In any cookbook, even the good ones, you can usually expect a few mediocre or outright terrible recipes. Not so with "Vegetarian Sandwiches." Every recipe I've tried is excellent. And best of all, the recipes are easy, quick and the ingredients are easy to find. Delicious!

Customer Reviews:
Good recipes.......2007-08-14
This is a great little book with lots of tasty recipes. The two ton chocolate cake is incredible for any chocoholic. The breads are not to hard to make and have interesting to complex flavors. I think the instructions could be a little better for some and that is the reason for 4 stars. For example putting 16 cups of flour and 8 cups of milk in a stand mixer is only going to work if you have an industrial size mixer. Cut that in two and your Kitchen aid will knead it wonderfully. Also I suggest you cut the filling recipes in half until you bake a loaf or two and see if you like it.
Bread Heaven.......2007-07-22
Margaux Sky's generosity in sharing her wonderful bread recipes with all of us is rivaled only by the generosity of the sandwiches she invents to fill the breads. I find her sauces particularly clever, adding enormous flavor and blending ingredients simultaneously. I have tried only a few of the recipes so far but all have been winners and I'm looking forward to tasting everything in time. The photographs are lush, able to stimulate an appetite all on their own. This is a marvelous small cookbook. If you are a bread lover, you must add this collection of bread recipes!
I don't get it..............2007-06-21
I was very disappointed in this book. Thank goodness I bought it used. Even I can make better looking bread than this book and bread has usually been a challenge for me to get the perfect loaf. The photography is very nice to look at if you like looking at burnt bread all the time. The recipes do not sound good to me at all.....I bought it because of the title....I was looking for a sandwich/filling recipe book....I didn't even know who Margaux Sky was until I Googled it. Save your money and find something better!! (one star because you can't leave it blank!)
Cookbook.......2007-03-28
Not your everyday sandwich cookbook. I bought this book just for the photo's alone, but the recipes I have tried so far are wonderful! Turns your sandwiches into gourmet meals.
The dishes are surprisingly easy to put together - even the fresh bread........2006-11-07
If this were called 'The Sandwich Book' it wouldn't receive nearly as much attention - but Sky's productions are so much more, and naming it BEAUTIFUL BREADS & FABULOUS FILLINGS is a masterpiece of strategy that more aptly highlights her unique productions. Bright color photos on every page accompany such recipes as Chicken Salad in Minty Yogurt Sauce on Brown Harvest Bread or Reuben with Reuben Sauce on Herbed Rye Bread. And, the dishes are surprisingly easy to put together - even the fresh bread.
