I LOVE this cookbook!! I have made many of the recipes and they have all been a huge hit with my family. The burgers are fabulous and the sloppy-joes - which I have NEVER liked before - are now one of my favorite meals. You cannot go wrong with this book!! One of my kids is a great eater while the other won't eat veggies for anything. Now, he's eating veggies with almost every meal (w/o knowing it, of course). I have baked things for friends and for my kids' classes ... and everyone loves it!! The only thing we didn't like -- the cupcakes were horrible!! I am going to try to make them again ... I must have done something wrong. There is no way we could love everything else in the book but hate the cupcakes so much. :o)

Two out of my three kids are picky eaters and they ate all of the meals I made from this book! It feels good to know that they are getting added nutrients that they wouldn't normally be eating. It does take extra time to prepare some of these recipes but it is worth it to me if my kids are getting nutritious meals. Great book!

I was watching IVillage and the author was a guest speaker. She explained how easy it was to incorporate fruits and vegetables into basic recipes. I thought that was too good to be true but liked the concept. Since both my children are picky eaters I figured I would give it a try so I purchased the book. So far, every recipe I made from the book, they ate and ENJOYED! I even send in the cupcakes/cookies to school on their birthdays instead of sugary snacks (which the teachers love so the kids don't bounce off the walls). I wouldn't call this being sneaky, I would call it being smart! I highly recommend this book.

The Sneaky Chef - I'm so glad I found this! I took about a month of weekends to get the freezer stocked with the purees - am using them now. The pbj muffins, the choc choc chip cookies, the tuna (salmon) patties, all hugely successful. My extremely picky child, who doesn't miss a thing, is eating the treats with the mom-approved hidden ingredients.

I used my ice cube trays to freeze the purees, so 2 cubes = 1/4 cup.

I also like it for myself, I won't take the time to prep fresh veggies, especially cauliflower, but now I'm eating better too, using the purees.

This is such a great book. I love that the recipes are all child friendly and I think the concept is brilliant! I have learned not only how to make her recipes, but also how to use her techniques for the recipes I already make at home. I found the extra hints and tips to be very informative and helpful and I loved that she used ingredients that are readily accessible and easy to keep on hand. My kids have eaten a ton of extra veggies and they can't even complain because they don't know it!!!

I'll keep this short and sweet: stop eating animal food, because animal protein and animal fat in dietary amounts will activate the carcinogens already in your body to produce cancer. Period. Man was *never meant* to consume animal food in the amounts he does, to say nothing about the drugs, antibiotics, hormones and the rest of the crap that the animal food industry laces it with. The sooner you eliminate meat, fish, fowl and dairy from your diet, the better off you and yours will be.

Read this book - it could save your life. Probably the most important, definitive book on diet and health ever written. It was easy to read, hard to put down. This is the study so many health books reference, and it simply can't be ignored. Dr.Sanjay Gupta mentions it in his book, and there are a host of other ones, mainly about HEALTH not weight, that state that this is an extremely important and pertinent study. So many doctors agreeing on one study tells me to take note, and after reading it, I must say it has changed my thinking on diet and nutrition and health in general.
Dr. Campbell concludes that the most healthy diet is a vegan one by the end of the book. However, that is not to say that even reducing the meat you eat, along with other animal products won't garner significant health benefits. In the last year I have made two diet changes, and this was one of them. I reduced the amount of animal product in my diet, and though I have not completely cut them out, I have seen significant health benefits. My autoimmune symptoms that I have had for years are gone, and I am off of all lupus medication. This is not a scientific study, this is purely anecdotal, but it means a lot to me, and I will continue to pursue reducing animal products in my diet until, perhaps, I am meat/dairy, etc... free. It seems to me that if we are in the grip of any disease, the least we can do is take note of Dr. Campbell's massive study and try changing our diet. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. And, if we are healthy, we might want to do what we can to stay that way.

I purchased this book based on my doctor's recommendation when I mentioned at her 6 month appt that she was waking every 1.5-2hrs. I was completely exhausted. By 7 months I had resorted to sleeping on the floor in her room because I was so tired of walking out of my room to hers. Then eventually she was sleeping with me on a mat on the floor and it was getting so insane! But even with all this craziness she still was not sleeping. So I decided I should do something. This book was extremely confusing and contradictory. It had some good advice as far as keeping a schedule and making sure they nap and go to bed on time, but this is fairly obvious. After reading the book I didn't feel confident in following the advice. So at 8 months old I followed the advice of a friend who recommended Dr Ferber's book and it was WONDERFUL! Much more concise and gave you concrete examples and things to do. I think I liked the idea of set times and a chart to follow. So I would have to say that although this book had some useful info, it was scattered and hard to decipher, the ferber book is much better in my opinion. She is now sleeping from 7pm-7am and just waking once to feed as I have decided to work on that separately and phase it out slowly.

This book could be boiled down to 20 pages, but instead you'll have to slog through it to get the invaluable information. The author's main point is that the best thing for baby is to get lots of sleep and for parents to try and follow the baby's natural pattern. Also he recommends the "cry it out" technique after reaching the appropriate age and weight. However, if you cannot emotionally handle this technique he offers some less heavy-handed solutions. Worked well for our kid, but then we've been blessed with an "easy" baby who has never cried more than 20 minutes before nodding off.

From the book we learned that putting a baby to bed earlier can help him sleep longer in the morning. Our guy was sleeping 9 PM - 4 AM, which we stretched to 7 PM - 6 AM in ten days, simply by gradually reducing his bedtime as recommended. He was nearly four months old at the time.

The other amazing thing is that our little guy fell into his own pattern before I even read in the book that it's the normal cycle for 80% of babies. He sleeps 7 PM - 6 AM, takes two 90-120 minute naps at 8 AM and noon, and usually takes a third, half-hour nap in the afternoon. Just like it says in the book. Every baby is different, but it helped to know this was the norm.

If you are looking for a blank journal - this isn't the book for you. If you are looking for a way to daily connect with the child growing within your womb - this is the perfect book for you. It was a psychological lifesaver for me. When my back was aching and nausea overwhelmed me I would often go to this book and read and it always reminded me that all the tough times of pregnancy are well worth it! I love the in depth detail on the estimated events that are happening. I realize that we all progress differently so the timing may not be perfect. However, as a nurse I am impressed with the accuracy of the material.

I have two sons and purchased a book during each pregnancy. I love reading through my notes in the books and recalling the sweet (and not so sweet) memories of pregnancy. We are planning on trying for another baby soon and this is the top book on my list! It will be a very special part of each of our children's memory chest.

I bought this journal in 2000 for my first pregnancy and I bought it again in 2006 for my second. It's very user friendly and has just enough space to write down all the important things you want to remember. I love the day by day explanation of what's going on with my body and the baby. I felt better reading the mayo clinc book after i tried many others, like the famous "what to expect when your expecting".... felt too short in my answers about my body and medical questions. I purchased this book on my doctor's recommendation, and it has been, hands down, the most informative book I've read about pregnancy. This is my first pregnancy, so of course I've also read "What to Expect When You're Expecting," along with several other books on pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic Guide is the most reliable and medically accurate book to reference while pregnant. It is much more organized and straight-forward than any of the other books out there. If you're pregnant or considering having a child, make sure you don't miss this book.

This has been a very interesting book. It reviews everything from the size of the baby week by week to various forms of testing. The book is broken down in the month by month categories, then specific topics. It's a book that you can read from cover to cover, or just hit the points that are important to you at that moment. I would recommend it for expecting mothers.

Dr. Plasker presents a compelling blueprint for a hundred year lifestyle. Whether or not you seriously have a shot at living to be a centenarian, his advice here on health, diet, fitness and emotional/spiritual well-being makes eminent sense. It is truly a holistic approach to lifestyle and longevity that has merit. Making the book more practical is the fact that it has a number of checklists and each chapter closes with a list of action items for the reader to take. The latter underscores the point that merely reading a book will not improve your lifestyle unless you follow through, act and execute upon it.

Since Dr Plasker himself is a chiropractor, there is a pitch for preventative chiropractic care. His plea here is not over-the-top or in-your-face, however, and is probably well founded.

The author's point is that many lifestyle changes can produce long-term positive results. In many cases, though perhaps not all, certain types of illness are products of lifestyle and tiny diet and fitness decisions made over the course of months and years. Making better fitness and health decisions every day can put extra years in your life and life in your years.

Every once in a while a book comes along that is so good that I buy a couple of dozen to distribute to friends and loved ones. This book joins that very exclusive club (FYI my other two frequent giveaways are Dr Judith Orloff's Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress, and Fear into Vibrance, Strength, and Love and Cheryl Richardson's The Unmistakable Touch of Grace: How to Recognize and Respond to the Spiritual Signposts in Your Life). This book is that great.

Dr. Eric Plasker has written one of the most powerful health books ever. The power lies in stretching our thinking by making clear that medical science has evolved to the point that living to one hundred has become a realistic possibility, as is having much improved vitality to whatever age we live. Dr. Plasker offers no silver bullets (thankfully!), just a great collection of proven things that we must personally manage if we are to avoid the life threatening stresses that come with the common overindulgent life style.

Many of the points raised by Dr. Plasker are treated at a summary level such that one's health philosophy and strategy must be supplemented by other resources (a point Plasker implicitly acknowledges by his inclusion of a thoughtful resource list at the end of the book). The need to supplement is not to suggest an absence of depth, but instead to suggest that the strength of the book lies in the presentation of a well thought-out, broad based platform for good health.

The true power of this gem is the clarity of the message that we may well live longer than we might think and that we need to manage the totality of our existence so as to maximize the likelihood that our remaining years are healthier. Clearly, other books have made a similar point but none which I have read have gone so far as to suggest things like a 100 year mastermind group (do you belong to such a group [yet]?).

Other reviewers have suggested multiple readings, family readings, etc. They are right on. This book is of the quality to serve as a guidebook for a better life. A guidebook that should be frequently referenced.

Dr. Plasker, you have made a great contribution to mankind with this book. You have done your part. We now have to get the book in the hands of more people, and serve as a personal role model for living the 100 year lifestyle. I, for one, am committed to doing my part.

I couldn't put this book down. A friend lent me her copy, and I loved it so much I ordered my own before I was even finished reading it. I learned so much about health and beauty and the things around us that drag them down. I have gone on to some of the other books and topics mentioned in this one, and have significantly changed my lifestyle, due largely to the information from Kat's book. I recommend it to any woman who wants to take better care of herself, feel better, and look better. It won't just benefit you; it will benefit all those around you. A fun and easy read--it is definitely worth the money.

Though the first part of the book is somewhat mundane it more than compensates for it in the resouces section. James not only lists the best products for one's diet, skin care, healing specific problems, and anything having to do with good health, but she also lists stores where they may be found complete with addresses. Her listings are impressive and invaluable. The resouces section alone is well worth the price of the book. For anyone who neither reads nor understands labels, this book is a "must have."

Even before I read The Truth about Beauty, I already bought a lot of natural and organic products, shopped at health food stores, and used traditional Chinese medicine. But despite being generally attuned to the problems with chemicals, overly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, etc., I still had some blind spots, especially when it came to issues of "beauty." For example, with my skin I was still using the old "search and destroy" method. But this book opened my eyes, and I have had much more success since I gave that up and started following James' advice about fixing the skin from the inside out.

The book does a great job of connecting health with beauty and explains a lot of concepts that even a natural food consumer might not know a lot about. For example, I had always thought of low-carb diets as being a lot of baloney (so to speak), but the way James explains the glycemic index makes total sense. I especially like her idea of "upgrading" and the specific examples she offers, like drinking spritzers instead of soda.

The resource index is also really useful, although some of the products may seem expensive. If you shop at Wal-mart for all your food and toiletries, yes, you will pay more for natural products. But if you buy department store brands like Clinique, you will be able to find plenty within your budget. Also, I find that I use a lot fewer products in general now that I've started following the kind of simple regiment James prescribes.

All in all, I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who has beauty issues.

I had the great fortune to meet Kat James and hear her speak at the Alive! Expo in Seattle in 11/06. She is as compelling a public speaker as she is an author. She tells her own story in the book, which makes it resonate just that much more strongly. This book, simply put, has changed my life. I followed almost all of Kat's recommendations, and have used the buying guide at the back to replace many of the personal care products I used for years without thinking of the chemicals contained in them. I'm eating organic foods and have lost 25 lbs. since I read this book three months ago. I bought it for several women friends for Christmas, and they're loving it, too. This is the first cookbook I have bought where I can see myself actually trying every recipe in it. Dr. Agatston has broken the book into specific holidays and events (Easter, Thanksgiving, Football parties, showers, etc.), but of course feel free to mix and match recipes based on what your preferred tastes are. The recipes that I have tried so far have been easy and delicious. The best part is at the end of every recipe, he tells you what you can prepare ahead of time, from hours before your event to days before your event. Each recipe is labeled as to which phase of the South Beach Diet it pertains, just as in his other books. This cookbook is too good to save just for holidays and parties. I'm planning on using it year-round for my family's everyday meals.

THIS WAS A VERY EDUCATIONAL BOOK. IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY MY DOCTOR. I THINK THAT THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY OF THE BOOK IS GREATER THAN MANY PEOPLE WOULD ENJOY. IT REQUIRES MORE THAN A SINGLE READING TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS. IT ALSO RECOMMENDS A LOT OF HERBAL REMEDIES OF VARIOUS CONDITIONS WHICH COULD BE A LITTLE COST PROHIBITIVE. THE DIET GUIDE WAS SIMPLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW BUT REQUIRED THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD GRASP OF THE BOOK'S CONCEPTS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHY TO EXCLUDE FOODS FROM YOUR DIET. I ENJOYED THE BOOK AND WILL REREAD MUCH OF IT. I AM ALSO FOLLOWING MANY OF ITS GUIDELINES FOR EATING FOR MY BLOOD TYPE.

I ordered the book to find the magic solution to my son's (age 6) bad eating habits. My other 3 kids eat anything. The book had very useful advice but no earth shattering solutions - just good common sense. I enjoyed reading the book and was glad I did, but it did not help. It did reinforce many things were were already doing as a family. It was a good check up.

I eagerly ordered Good Kids, Bad Habits, hoping for new insights and parenting tips. The first problem was that my children are 12, 14 & 17 years old, and the book's advice targeted parents with much younger children. Unfortunaltely some of us with teens and preteens have still not figured out how best to shepard our children into the healthest possible lifestyles, given our modern culture.

I read the book anyway, and was struck with the thought that very few of the suggestions presented by the author were new or original. Many of the main stream suggestions have been in parents' magazine articles for decades. The title and cover of the book were the most creative and original part of the package.

The author is a pediatrician, yet little or no science graced the pages.

Of course I was not been able to bring myself to toss the book in the recycle bin. So I have donated the paperback to the local library. A 5 minute scan of the text at the library, should provide you with all its insights.

I have read part of this book. It is work, no easy answers. You have to evaluate, evaluate, evaluate.... I have started with one child, but then the next question is about another child. I'll work it out. But you have to do the work.

What a fantastic book! Useful advice given in a practical and non-judgemental way. Dr. Jen provides a fantastic road map for helping to put your child on the path of a healthy life both physically & mentally. As the Mom of a 9-year old son, I really appreciated her advice on parenting children during the 'tween years and thoughts on self-esteem.
