Not a healthy vegetarian cookbook.......2007-09-26
I agree completely with the people who gave this book a low rating. The book is heavy on dairy (milk and butter). I read on the WW blog that it was recommended - but I don't understand how that can be. If a person on WW ate from the recipes in this book, they would be on WW FOREVER! Can't even resell this book for what I paid for it.
I may try later to revamp some of the recipes to be more health conscious by substituting healthier ingredients.
Fantastic Cookbook.......2007-09-10
This is a great book. The recipes are delicious, imaginative, and always come out great! What more could one ask of a cookbook?
One of the most used cookbooks in my kitchen.......2007-02-14
I happened to pick this cookbook up at my college at a book sale for $7 thinking I'd find a few good recipes for my money. It quickly became the most used books in my cookbook collection. Didi Emmons does a wonderful job of being creative with her food, but also giving basic information on how to cook things. One of my favorite aspects of her book are the "did you know" boxes on her pages, giving you a brief history of some foods to different uses for others. I highly recommend the African Tomato and Peanut soup...it's one of my favorites. One other comment I wanted to make was: neither my husband or I are vegetarian, but we found ourselves using this book for 2 or 3 meals each week, and it really cut down on the amount of money we spent at the grocery store.
Vegetarian Variety.......2006-12-03
I really like this cookbook for several reasons: the vast variety of cultures/tastes; the variety of spices, foods utilized in the recipes; the variety of dishes (soups, salads, main dishes, one-pot suppers, sandwiches, even dumplings and pizza dough!); and the ease with which many of the dishes can be prepared. Easy does not necessarily mean boring, as evidenced by the asparagus with curry butter sauce. I make this dish for almost every family get-together dinner and it always gets raves. I hate to admit how easy it is to make! I would never have thought of mixing asparagus with curry. I really appreciate the foods from various cultures, including Middle Eastern, Southwestern and Mexican. And good old-fashioned American tastes as well. Sample menus in the back of the book are very helpful and are also organized by type of meal(for example, the "I-Just-Lost-My-Job Supper -- Dinner on a Tight Budget").I haven't tried many of the desserts, although they also look good. But I haven't tried one dish I haven't liked yet. Not necessarily for vegans, since many of the dishes include cheese and milk, etc. But it's a great intro to vegetarian cooking. Nicely arranged, easy to read, fun to use.
Creative, nutritious, delicious.......2006-06-29
The recipes are creative, nutritious, and delicious. I love the upbeat tone of the book, and the sheer number of recipes is amazing. Most are time-consuming but worth it. Everything I've made from it has been popular. The veggie burgers are a particular favorite in our family and we always keep a supply in the freezer. This book is also a wealth of information on legumes, grains, exotic vegetables, ethnic condiments, store-cupboard suggestions... it is a wonderful reference.

It's Still the One.......2007-09-01
This is still a great cookbook with helpful ideas for creating delicious and nutritious meals. I love their blueberry cobbler recipe and still use it at least once a month.
usefulish book.......2007-08-10
Well I'm not american nor a woman but found this book great - I actualy discovered my copy in an aprtment in Boston near Notheatern when I lived there for a summer. the recipies were pretty crap (insert mick dundee quote here) but some of the ideas on protein complementarity were interesting
Classic cookbook but dated. .......2007-07-16
I have to respect the work and effort done in researching this excellent book on not only the political, financial and moral impact of a diet dominated by meat, but also the reasons to abandon a meat emphasis for the sake of our health. Many of the chapters are powerfully written, although they get a bit 'statically heavy'. Still it's a good read.
My primary issue is the recipes at the end of the book. Almost all use animal products of some kind, which defeats the idea of keeping the diet for the planet accessible to all. Many meals depend heavily on milk, cheese and eggs to provide protein, and this is just not necessary.
Good recipes' however can be adapted and these are good recipes. All in all, it was worth the purchase price.
Good primer for the beginning vegetarian cook.......2007-06-05
I want to defend the recipes, after several reviewers have attacked them. I'm not saying EVERYTHING in the cookbook is scrumptious, but then again, I wouldn't say that of ANY cookbook I've ever seen. This is probably the most practical book for someone to own when they're beginning to try to cook vegetarian meals, either as an exclusive diet or as an occasional alternative to meat. Sure, Deborah Madison's VEGETARIAN COOKING FOR EVERYONE and the ubiquitous MOOSEWOOD COOKBOOK are more gourmet, but that's not an unmixed blessing for a beginning cook (or a beginning vegetarian). DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET has a variety of recipes contributed by different cooks with a variety of skill levels and tastes. Some of them are blessedly easy and quite delicious, e.g., lentil pastitsio, and Roman red beans and rice, both of which I've served at parties and seen devoured enthusiastically by non-vegetarians. It also suggests ways of sneaking some protein into unexpected places like breads and cakes--an invaluable skill for any parent of a finicky toddler, vegetarian or not. Unlike the more gourmet vegetarian cookbooks, DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET doesn't assume that you're starting with fresh heirloom vegetables from farmer's markets, gourmet cheeses, and a fully equipped chef's kitchen where you grind your own spices. If you want to make a decent meatless meal with whatever's marked down this week at the supermarket, this is your guide. Unlike the more gourmet vegetarian cookbooks I sometimes use, DIET has nutritional information to help you plan a meal that you know isn't shortchanging your family on protein. All in all, I think this is an essential book for beginners in vegetarian cooking.
Diet For Small Minds.......2007-04-28
I remember being one of the first hippies on my block to buy this book in the early 1970's. At the time I was a vegetarian, which of course was mandatory for us members of the back-to-the-earth crowd. At the time, I thought highly of this book. The book has been criticized for containing recipes that range from bland to unpalatable, but some of the recipes tried by I and my earth-mamma wife at the time were actually not bad. In fact I knew a few folks back then who never drove Volkswagon Beetles with peace signs and flowers painted on them, and yet tried and liked some of these recipes. But that was then. As humans, if we fail to mature and grow intellectually, we are fools. I still see far too many souls from the pathetically naive baby boom generation who have been frozen in time like a mosquito in an iceberg. And similarly, there are still people who think this book is an intellectual tour-de-force. If they ever decide to develop their brains, they will be able to look back and see that this book is overly simplistic and is based on far too many misconceptions and false or unproven assumptions to be considered a great work. If you are the type who religiously believes in anthropogenic global warming, in spite of the complete absence of scientific proof and in spite of the growing evidence about natural climate cycles, you will love this book. But you might want to get out of your comfort zone and start developing some objective analytical abilities before it's too late.

Thirty years after Frances Lappe's Diet for a Small Planet changed eating habits around the world, she and her daughter Anna bring us a new round of iconoclastic recommendations that break overwhelming issues down to a simple matter of personal choice. Hope's Edge presents many of the same issues of the original title, but it also provides a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities in this era of genetically engineered foods, worldwide famine, and growing rates of obesity-related health issues.
Beyond discussing a wide range of reasons to become a vegetarian (and that means no fish or chicken either, folks), the authors introduce you to a number of individual reasons for hope--Bob, the Wisconsin cheese maker; Jean-Yves, the farmer from Brittany who created the Sustainable Agriculture Network; and Muhammad Yunas, who has changed the lives of countless living in poverty with his remarkable microcredit programs. Along with these stories and the theories they're based on, you'll also find luscious recipes calling for grains, fruits, vegetables, and a handful of dairy products that will delight your taste buds and your conscience.
The Lappes firmly believe that the choices of low-level consumers have the potential to make positive changes, both in the world economy and in our physical health. By eating a vegetarian diet, shopping with care, and cooking with love, we might all brighten our future tremendously. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
Hope's Edge follows the author of the classic Diet for a Small Planet and her daughter as they travel the world, discovering practical visionaries who are making a difference in world hunger, sometimes one village at a time.
Thirty years ago, Frances Moore Lappé started a revolution in the way Americans think about food and hunger. Now Frances and her daughter, Anna, pick up where Diet for a Small Planet left off. Together they set out on an around-the-world journey to explore the greatest challenges we face in the new millennium. Traveling to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, they discovered answers to one of the most urgent issues of our time: whether we can transcend the rampant consumerism and capitalism to find the paths that each of us can follow to heal our lives as well as the planet.
Featuring nearly seventy recipes from celebrated vegetarian culinary pioneers-including Alice Waters, Mollie Katzen, Laurel Robertson, Nora Pouillon, and Anna Thomas-Hope's Edge highlights true trailblazers engaged in social, environmental, and economic transformations.
Customer Reviews:
2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner featured in the book.......2006-10-13
This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.
Hope Gained From Insight and Diligence.......2006-08-16
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.
The Lappes traveled to 5 continents while researching this book and their travels are both fascinating and uplifting as they report on people all over the world demonstrating that going organic and controlling their own markets are reaping major benefits in healthy, abundant food production while cleaning up the environment.
The Lappes do not reject world trade or capitalism, rather, they demonstrate how unregulated "free" markets monopolized by huge international corporations have been inadvertently causing food scarcity, bankrupting and polluting people all over the world, yet with an injection of regulation in the form ethics, strict fair trade measures, etc., they believe capitalism can "evolve" to a more sustainable, equitable, and healthy method of food distribution- a similar optimistic view shared by Lovins and Hawken in their book, "Natural Capitalism".
The inefficiencies of nutrient and food distribution is brought home in quantifying the huge amount of crops, water, and land required to feed cattle. The amount of energy necessary to produce an ounce of meat could feed hundreds of people on a much healthier vegetarian diet, hence, the myth of food scarcity and the need to grow more food to feed the world.
Every chapter finishes with a recipe and there are many more at the end of the book along with several pages of resources and contact information on a host of organizations advocating social responsibility.
Be gentle on the earth.......2006-02-22
Good copy. Excellent vegetarian recipes. Explains why we need to eat lower on the food chain. If we do, we can feed the world's hungry people.
Goes into my life's top 5.......2004-11-21
I won't say much here, because the other reviewers have described the book well. All I will say is that this is one of the very best books I have ever read. Not only does Lappe have an incredible way with words, but she summarizes her profound insights in such a way that really organizes one's thoughts for genuine reflection. Add to that a well-documented and researched approach, as well as fascinating stories of different communities around the world which they themselves visited.
Honest Hope.......2004-05-25
Hope's Edge is a Must Read for Everyone! The book puts it all together in an easy-to-understand, personal and honest fashion: the connection between consumerism, 'brainwashing', oppression, global economy, poverty, exploitation etc. etc. The concepts presented in this book are sophisticated and have depth. I liked the personal tone of the book, the story telling. The book is very honest, the stories told utterly inspiring. Frances and Anna never 'whitewash' the porlbmes the projects they are describing are facing. This truth-telling makes the stories even more impressive, more credible. The very existence of these projects defy the global systems as we know them. The way they do 'business' defies the global system of exploitation and competition. This book makes us take an honest look at ourselves, our values, the daily choices we make, what we consume, how we live. This is not just 'about food' or poverty or world hunger, this is truly food for thought and inspiration of how to create a better world."
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Great food, time intensive to make.......2007-07-13
The recipes in this book are great, I think it gets more creative than a lot of vegan recipes I've seen and they usually turn out great if followed closely. That being said, I find that this cookbook suffers from the same issue I find with a lot of vegan recipes, which is that often the recipes call for a lot of ingredients. Often the recipes will have ingredients such as a vegetarian worchestire sauce that you need to turn around and make. In other words, I find these recipes time intensive. I think another good measure of how time intensive some of these recipes are is the number of ingredients required to make them, which is often around 15. When I have the time and feel like cooking, I bring out this book. But most days when I'm looking to make something fast I don't have the time.
The only cookbook you will ever need........2007-06-21
I have experienced several vegan cookbooks in my lifetime. This is definitely one of the better ones. I was looking for vegetable recipes, but came away with so much more.
Seriously, You will never even have to think of using animal products again with this cookbook. Ms. Robertson takes a vegan approach to classic recipes like New England chowder and Italian wedding soup.
There is also a huge variety of recipes from different countries and cultures, all meat/dairy free. I cannot wait to try the scallion pancakes with sesame seeds.
Vegan Planet is wonderful!
Excellent cookbook for Vegies.......2007-06-14
This book is the best Vegetarian/Vegan cookbook ever. With this book on hand you can throw out all others! Haven't had an "icky" meal yet from this book.
Get it and enjoy being healthy!
Makes Being Vegan Easy and a Joy.......2007-05-25
Truly a must have for anyone enjoying a vegan diet. So many exquisite recipees with unique flavors, textures and visual appeal. When I first told my husband I wanted us to go vegan, he said no way. But I bought the book anyway and have been cooking out of it for three weeks almost every night straight and my husband has been delighted with every meal and has not complained once and doesn't even know he's eating vegan! These are unusual meals that are not too hard to prepare if you have a well stocked kitchen, you need the right tools for the job and you need to be willing to shop frequently as a vegan for the fresh foods these recipees require, but the results are well worth your effforts guaranteed. As an experienced cooking enthusiast, I highly recommend!
A winner, among the best vegan titles in print.......2007-05-16
If you're only going to buy one vegan cookbook, this is the one to get. Despite being nearly the size of a Manhattan phone directory, _Vegan Planet_ never sacrifices quality for quantity. Everything I've tried here is outstanding. And, whatever you do, don't miss Robin's "Vermicelli, Chickpeas, and Vegetables with Creamy Curry Sauce" (p. 264).

She did her homework!.......2007-05-09
This author really did her homework and has given us much information about beans and many excellent recipes. The recipes are not mostly simple in my view, however. I find a goodly number of ingredients in many. So if you define simple as having only 3-5 ingredients, know that this book is more complex overall. It's an excellent recipe collection.
Good recipes but not that practical.......2005-12-05
I have used many of the recipes in this book and they have all turned out well and were delicious. The information on beans provided in the beginning of the book is excellent and thorough and the author is obviously very knowledgeable and a talented cook. Here's why I only give it three stars:
1. Ingrediants used in many of the recipes can be obscure or hard to find, especially if you do not live in major metropolitan area with good access to ethnic and/or specialty food stores.
2. While none of the recipes I have tried are difficult, many of them are very time consuming and require a lot of preparation. This is not a book for someone looking for quick and easy family dinners.
3. This is not a book for vegetarians or people looking for a lot of meatless entree options as many of the recipes center on meat or have meat ingrediants.
4. The recipes in this book cover all corners of legume world so if you're looking for mostly recipes that center on beans as people commonly think of them (black beans, kidney beans, navy beans, garbanzos, etc.) this book may not be for you.
A lovely, lovely book for food lovers.......2004-12-29
This book is quickly becoming one of my favorite cookbooks. Each recipe begins with a descriptive paragraph containing historical information about the dish or specific recollections from the author as to the origin or the travels that led to its creation. It is imaginative, innovative, and very informative. I really love it.
Excellent Recipes!.......2004-07-15
I bought the book because beans are so healthy and since they are a prebiotic food they are good for a number of degenerative diseases (especially candida). The recipes are so good that I don't even feel like I'm cooking for health reasons! I would recommend this book to anybody who has a discriminating palate.
Not for vegetarians!.......2004-05-25
The information in the first few chapters regarding all the different kinds of beans and how to cook them is very useful. I learned a lot I didn't know, even though I've been cooking lots of beans for years. However my biggest complaint is that, while not claiming to be a vegetarian cookbook, one might reasonably expect that something called "The Bean Bible" might be more vegetarian than not. But most of the recipes in this book call for meat of some kind, and many I would say are even more meat-based than bean-based. This is a real disappointment to me since I am a vegetarian. It's easy enough to replace the odd meat item in a recipe with a soy based meat item, but these recipes rely very heavily on meat and many do not lend themselves to substitutions. I would only recommend this book to hearty meat eaters.
Book Description
The queen of vegetarian hip is back! Convinced that entertaining doesn't have to be high-stress or high-maintenance, Didi Emmons presents an alternative view: the best parties aren't meticulously planned. Crammed with innovative ideas for delightfully informal gatherings and hundreds of globally inspired, big-flavored vegetarian recipes, Entertaining for a Veggie Planet proves that having friends over whether for the season finale of a favorite TV show or for a book group discussion is not only easy, it's fun. From dips and cold bites (Malaysian Spring Rolls) to main dishes (Shiitake Mac "n" Cheese), from brunch (Cardamon Blueberry Cake) to "sweet eats" (Oreo Key Lime Pie), Emmons's dishes offer endless possibilities for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone else in search of a satisfying meal. Her creative menus ("Vegetarian Solutions to Turkey Day") and her spirit of fun ("if you're serving only one food, make it homemade ice cream") will put all cooks in the mood to share.
Customer Reviews:
way beyond standard veggie fare.......2007-01-23
Both of Didi Emmons cookbooks are among my most reliable recipe sources. As someone who's been a vegetarian for years and who also cooks for serious carnivores, I love that I can find recipes that pair ingredients I would not come up with on my own. Favorite recipes in this book include cambodian tomato soup, pomegranate walnut dip (muhammara,) hazelnut mushroom burgers, and chard and eggplant salad.
entertaining for a veggie planet.......2006-04-07
the best recipe book i have ever read and used
Creative and delicious recipes - plus it's a riot to read!.......2004-05-02
This book is worth the price for her pan-fried tofu recipe alone. Indisputably the BEST way to prepare tofu. Even people who are confirmed tofu haters love this method.
My only minor quibble with Didi is that she (page 219) eats fish on occasion and thus considers herself a "95% vegetarian". For a vegan, the suggested use of "fish sauce" in a vegetarian recipe book is annoying. However Didi does suggest alternatives - and her recipes are fine without it.
A good friend suggested that the lone negative reviewer may have substituted some other yeast for the nutritional yeast called for in many recipes, I'm sure she's correct. Folks, there is NO substitute, you need genuine nutritional yeast (mild and cheesy) - NOT brewer's yeast (bitter), and definitely not (shudder) baker's yeast!
This book rocks!.......2004-03-20
The recipes in the book are fabulous. I have tried several recipes and they have all been a hit - the kind that will get your friends to ask for the recipe (even the non-vegetarian ones!)
The recipes are very simple yet creative. I have "read" the book cover to cover, and everything looks so delicious and interesting that I cannot wait to try more of them out. Sometimes I find when I buy a cookbook that I only wind up caring for a few recipes in the whole book. I don't think it'll be the case with this one!
I have bought several copies of the book to give to friends, meat eating ones included.
Good Commentary, Bad Recipes.......2004-03-18
I purchased this book several months ago, in hopes of delightful recipes even non-vegitarians would love. Since then, out of all the meals I have prepared, about 50% of them were just plain disgusting!! Some of the recipes were so bad we couldnt even choke them down, and ended up throwing them away and heading for the nearest fast food.
If you are good in the kitchen, you could probably fix some of the recipes; As, I have thought of better things I could do the next time I prepared the meal... If there ever will be a next time!
On top of the gross outcome, most of the recipes call for unusual, hard to find, ingredients. She includes a glossary that recomends where to find the strangest ingredients (usually from various ethnic markets). Living in a small town, ethnic markets are few and far between... and definatly out of the way for saturday morning shopping.
On a lighter note: She does have alot of helpful tips and comments mixed in among the recipes, which i really enjoyed (I wish every cookbook included her commentary)...
And of the recipes that were good, they were really WONDERFUL!
I think Didi Emmons relies entirely too much on her cat's taste approval for her recipes... or perhaps she has burned out her human taster's tasteing sense and thats how she was able to publish these recipes.
I guess I would only recomend this book to experienced cooks, who live in large cities with several different ethnic markets around (Indian, Asian, Latin, Middle-Eastern, Mexican, etc. etc.).

Came at the Right Time.......2006-07-24
When I had decided to become vegetarian some 33 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing and got very sick within a few days. I did not realize how difficult it was to go from meat and potatoes to having veggies be more than a side dish and garnish. A friend who was an Episcopal Priest, Charles Pedersen, recommended the book. After eating a few of the recipes, especially the quiches, I was healthy again and have been able to be consistently and happily vegetarian since then. Although after 8 years of being lacto ovo vegetarian I shifted to becoming vegan, I still remember the book with fondness and am thankful for the healthy and nutritious recipes. I have passed on more than a few copies to others who are starting their vegetarian journey and found others have enjoyed it as well.
Nearly Useless.......2006-05-05
I've owned this cookbook for years. A well-meaning relative gave it to me when I first became a vegetarian 16 years ago, and it's a good thing that I didn't start to try recipes from this book early on, because I would have given up on vegetarianism. There are some decent bread recipes here, but the remainder are almost uniformly terrible. Nutritious, perhaps, but also tasteless without a seeming thought to presentation or texture. This book represents the worst of early vegetarian cooking in America, and I have yet to prepare a single recipe from this book that I found to be truly appetizing, or that I would (heaven forbid) serve to guests. I didn't sell my copy because I wouldn't inflict this sort of thing on an unsuspecting victim - I recycled my copy.
Nutritious and delicious.......2006-03-14
Though one reviewer felt the format of this book was a poor choice, I found it to be perfect. I can leave a spare copy with one of my grocery bags so that I can pick out a new recipe or two while at the grocery store. I find that this lets me find the freshest foods available.
What I like most about this book is that with a little preperation and fore thought, you can do much of your cooking for meals in advance, and just combine ingredients and heat when meal time comes. This can be done because many of the recipes call for "cooked rice" or "cooked peas". I find that this also allows you to use leftovers up quickly, in new recipes.
One note, though, is that this book is not Vegan by any means. Many of the recipes call for dairy products and eggs.
Overall, it is a lovely lovely book and a must for those trying to live lightly on the earth.
My first vegetarian cookbook.......2002-08-18
A friend gave me this book (the spiral edition) in 1973, and it truly changed my life -- I became a vegetarian immediately. This is where I learned how to cook and eat all kinds of food that I'd never seen before, especially beans. I am not crazy about the "breakfast" recipes, but the breads in this cookbook are great. I have over a hundred cookbooks, and I still make the lasagne with adzuki beans (complicated) and the potato soup (easy). Almost every page in my book is either stained or annotated or both.
The only disadvantage to this cookbook is that many recipes call for dairy products and eggs -- things that I still enjoy after 29 years, but that I am not allowed to eat as often these days!
This is a classic, educational cookbook for vegetarians.
Great recipes ... inconvenient packaging.......2001-03-25
This is a great cookbook! The reason I only gave it 4 stars is becaus the cookbook is bound in a regular book format so it is very difficult to place on the counter top or in a recipe hook holder when you cook. The original version was spiral bound which was great! All cookbooks should come spiral bound!!! My two primary cookbooks in the kitchen are this one and More With Less (which incidently is actually spiral bound)!
Customer Reviews:
I've been waiting for a book like this one!.......2006-01-23
Beyond the militant veggies pictured on Veggie Revolution's cover, one will not find a raging manifesto denouncing meat eaters. Instead, the book contains an informative, intelligent, in-depth analysis of a number of topics relating to vegetarianism and the environment, with a thorough investigation of factory farming. The subject of corporate animal farms can be disturbing, yet authors Sally Kneidel, Ph.D., and Sara Kate Kneidel have a gentle way of presenting the unadulterated truth about the meat industry without resorting to shock tactics.
Despite the serious subject matter, Veggie Revolution is thoroughly readable and so well written that diverse topics such as Pfiesteria, eutrophication, and NAFTA are actually thought-provoking! Indeed, reading Veggie Revolution is like taking an environmental studies, nutrition, and economics course all wrapped into one, taught by the most interesting and capable of teachers.
There are quite a few bonuses to the book as well, such as the thirty-seven pages of recipes, and chapters on nutrition, which make the book an excellent reference and resource. Another added feature is the numerous student interviews. How interesting it is to read what students have to say in their own words about vegetarianism and the environment.
Whether vegetarian or not, Veggie Revolution will help readers understand so much more than the merits of a vegetarian diet. It's a book that has the potential to change the world for the better!
Viva la Revolution!.......2005-12-14
This is an engaging discussion of the environmental, ethical and nutritional benefits of eating lower on the food chain as portrayed through this family's personal journey of discovery. The two voices make this book especially interesting. I found myself wondering if a section was written by the scientist mother or the college student daughter. The writing style is conversational, sometimes funny; the material is well researched and offers a thorough look at the impact our food choices have on our future. Whether we choose to be vegetarian or not, we can (and maybe we must) make a difference!
A lively, well-researched, comprehensive resource .......2005-11-21
I have read many books on vegetarianism and the environment over the years, so I was pleasantly surprised that Veggie Revolution approaches these subjects in a new way -- very thought-provoking and well-documented but at the same time a fascinating read, never dry or boring. The authors are not just giving us information, they are telling a story! For one section of the book, the authors visited a number of farms of various sizes and types and interviewed farm workers, owners, and other professionals. The accounts of the farm visits are so vivid that I could imagine I was right there with the authors. Another thing that makes the book very interesting is that the authors put a human face on the farmers and other people who are quoted in the book; they do this by giving us a glimpse into their lives and their perspectives on the issues. It is impressive that the authors treat all of them with respect and consideration, whether the authors share their values and perspectives or not. All through the book the authors use a conversational tone that I found very engaging -- they are not talking down to me, but sharing important information as one would with a friend.
The nutritional information is quite solid. I have learned a ton about nutrition over the past 35 years, as well as having been a vegetarian for the past 17 years, and I can say with assurance that the nutritional information in this book is right on the mark.
The recipes are great! I especially like how the recipes can be made with ingredients that are readily available: most of them I already have in my pantry or refrigerator, and any that I don't have are readily available at my local grocery or farmer's market. The directions are easy to follow, and having options and notes on the recipes is very helpful.
Throughout the book, the authors make a solid case for improving our diets as well as for supporting local farmers and working on all levels to take care of the earth. I strongly recommend Veggie Revolution for anyone who is not afraid to learn the truth about where our food comes from, how this impacts our lives and the future of the planet we live on, and what we can do to improve the situation both personally and globally.
Helpful, honest, and thorough.......2005-11-14
My husband picked up this book for our 17-year-old daughter who declared herself vegan in April. We had been having a hard time coming up with family meals that would satisfy everyone, but the recipes in this book have pleased even my picky 11-year-old. I've ended up reading the rest of it as well, and found it really interesting. The informational chapters are all too convincing - my husband and I are cutting back our meat intake as well. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in vegetarianism or who is trying to understand a family member's choice. It's bolstered my daughter with new arguments and left us all better informed. I'm buying it for my sister-in-law for Christmas.
Very readable!.......2005-11-11
Veggie Revolution reads less like research and more like a personal journey to understand the meat industry, how it affects the animals, the environment, our communities and our health. It is full of helpful advice to readers who want to make a difference. I especially enjoyed the alternating voices of the mother/daughter authors as they shared their experiences and choices about food. Good section on vegetarian nutrition and cooking for the beginner.
Book Description
Our food choices do affect the planet! Ecological cooking can be good for the environment (using foods low on the food chain), good for our sense fo well-being (placing ethics on the dinner table), and good for our bodies (a vegan diet reduces the risk of heart attack by 90%).

Not Just for Vegans.......2002-10-27
I gave up being a vegan almost ten years ago, but I still keep this book around for a few excellent staple recipes--veggie burgers, sloppy joes, bread casserole. Its simplicity is a relief compared to the fifty-ingredient all-day projects presented in many modern vegan cookbooks, and many of the recipes are surprisingly good. The only thing wrong with this book is the terrible index.
Approachable cookbook for students, vegetarians, everyone!.......2001-12-31
I bought this book 7 years ago when I was first living on my own and learning to cook. Not only was I new to vegetarianism, but I was also new to cooking for myself. The recipes are easy to make (fool-proof, really) and most of the recipes draw from the same group of ingredients. Once you have most of the recommended pantry items on hand, you can whip up just about anything. The ingredient dictionary is terrific for new vegetarians; I otherwise may have never found out what "seitan" and "tamari" are! I really can't recommend this book enough!!!
If you get only one vegan cookbook, get this one!.......2000-07-17
This is the cookbook I recommend to people getting started with vegan cooking. As well as a huge range of recipes, Stepaniak and Hecker give a guide to setting up the vegan kitchen, and oodles of inspiring quotes on vegan ethics. Most of the recipes use "normal" ingredients; less familiar ingredients are explained in a glossary. While I will admit I didn't like every single recipe here, most of them are tasty, filling, and have become a regular part of our family's repertoire. I particularly like Basic Muffins, Teriyaki Salad, Indonesian Rice Salad, and Spicy Vegetable Bean Stew.
Useful cookbook with lots of good recipes!.......1999-12-15
This cookbook is very useful, as not only does it have many great recipes, it includes information about the environment and how to live more in tune with the earth. Also included is information about feeding your animal friends. There are some recipes that aren't terribly exciting, and a few that I didn't like at all, such as Indian Cabbage and Peas and the Millet Stew. But overall, this is a great cookbook. there are tons of recipes (included in this book are OVER 500 recipes!) that ARE good, especially the Banana Nut Bread recipe, and the Brown Rice and Tofu Stir-Fry. There are some very imaginative dishes, like the Greek Rice Special, that were pleasantly surprising to me. My only complaints are the lack of nutrional analyses, and some recipes call for margarine. I just substitute Spectrum Spread with great results.
One of the best cook book authors.......1998-04-18
I highy recommend any cookbook by Joanne Stepaniak. The books not only have delicious, easy to prepare recipes, but also contain a wealth of knowledge for those just getting started in plant-based food preparation. Try this and any other book by Joanne and you will not be disappointed. Cooking without animal products have never been easier and more rewarding.
