Vinegar: a product for our times.......2007-09-21
This book will help us toss out expensive chemical products to acheive the same results with less harm to ourselves, our children and our environment. Use it liberally without fear. One thing, you can use a small amount of diluted vinegar as a rinse for washable silks. Silk is a protein, like your hair, both of which benefit from the acid to rebalance their ph.
Quite surprised!.......2007-09-10
I wasn't sure how well vinegar recipes would translate but was presently surprised. Aren't we all decendants from Italian in-laws? Easy read, yummy ways to incorporate vinegar into your every day life.
Throw out your other cleaners.......2007-06-02
If you want to go green this is a way to start. Vinegar does an amazing number of things to keep your house and yourself in top shape. And best of all it does not leave a lingering smell as other cleaners do. Try it.
Good things come in small books..........2007-03-08
Just moved from city water to well water, and learned how to deal with the hard water issues. As a bonus, got a lot of tips on other everyday uses. Good reference book. Would recommend.
Very interesting and informative book.......2006-12-30
Lots of information on all kinds of uses for vinegar.
We are using some of them already to good advantage.
I recommend the book if you have an interest in the subject.

Many of us like the idea of tofu better than the reality, and few of us know how to cook with it. Chef Deborah Madison's This Can't Be Tofu addresses such qualms, offering 75 recipes for this healthful (high in protein and low in salt, fat, and calories) food. Madison knows that tofu can be delicious, and provides recipes for a wide range of dishes that glorify its fresh milky taste and yielding texture--or that use it to make other foods (like mayonnaise) better for us. Beginning with an introduction to tofu varieties, Madison then discusses tofu purchasing and basic preparation techniques such as draining and pressing, which make tofu a useful flavor medium. Quick and easy tofu recipes like Seared Tofu with Chives and Peppers follow, along with formulas for tofu-based appetizers, salads, soups, stir-fries, curries, and pasta, among other fare. Particularly winning recipes include Spring Rolls with Shredded Cabbage, Mushrooms, and Tofu; Red Pepper and Miso Soup with Tofu and Black Sesame; and Sautéed Asparagus with Curried Tofu and Tomatoes. Madison also provides breakfast recipes like Scrambled Tofu with Herbs and Cheese (and ones in which tofu takes the place--without imitation--of sausages), plus a group of tofu sweets, including shakes and smoothies. A short section on accompaniments, such as Sweet Potatoes Baked with Oranges, concludes this comprehensive introduction to an ancient food that Madison makes modern and newly delicious. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
One taste and you'll say, "This can't be tofu!" But it is....
Nutritionists, doctors, and food authorities everywhere are telling us to eat more tofu. It's an excellent source of high-quality protein and calcium. It contains no cholesterol and is very low in calories and saturated fat. So why don't we eat more tofu? Because for too long tofu has been used as a substitute for other ingredients. Why turn tofu into a beef substitute in a burger, or pass it off as "cheese" in lasagna, when it is delicious on its own?
Now, in
This Can't Be Tofu!, award-winning and bestselling author of
Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone Deborah Madison shows how to make tofu taste great and be the star attraction in 75 stir-fries, sautés, and other dishes. Pan-Seared Tofu with Garlic, Ginger, and Chives, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Curried Tofu Triangles with Peas, and Pineapple and Tofu Fried Rice are just some of the innovative recipes in this inspired collection.

What does it look like?.......2006-12-05
I purchased this book as a gift for a friend that recently decided to become vegetarian. I am unfamiliar with tofu and tofu cooking, as is she, so I thought it might be helpful to have a cookbook with tasty meatless recipes. Mind you, I haven't tried any of the recipes in this book, they may be delicious, but what I found disapointing is THERE ARE NO PICTURES (except for the three on the cover.) I hope the recipes in this book taste more appealing than the book is to look at.
Such Tasty Dishes!.......2006-11-18
Love the variety if offers, from breakfasts to desserts. Each time I sit down to plan my meals for the week, this one is right by my side. Anyone accustomed to flavorful meats seeking alternatives will love this book. Also the perfect size; not cumbersome to have in the kitchen.
Great recipes - good enough to forgive the title.......2006-06-07
I was bothered by the title of this book, which implied strongly that tofu is a thing that must be disguised or improved, requiring the proverbial "spoonful of sugar" to be palatable. I bought it anyway because flipping though the recipes looked very interesting, and I reasoned that if the author really felt that way about tofu, she probably wouldn't be writing a tofu cookbook... right?
I've had the cookbook for a few months and probably made about a dozen different recipes so far. Every one has been a hit with me and with my family. Two of the soups have have already become family standards. My favorite is one with Thai red curry, coconut milk and butternut squash. I'm a big fan of Thai food and could make this soup every week if I weren't committed to variety.
I haven't tried any of the sauces, but not a single recipe I've tried has been a dud.
You can't go wrong with this book.......2006-06-02
I have had this book for a couple of years and I cook from it frequently. It is true that many of the recipes call for frying, but the tofu is usually pan-fried in a very small quantity of oil. There are many Asian-inspired recipes, which doesn't bother me, because I find them all to be delicious. The recipe for Asian stock is great and it lends a lot of flavor to the dishes that use it. The szechuan tofu and green beans (which uses the mushroom soy sauce that one reviewer mentioned) is worth the small investment in a bottle of such an odd ingredient and the recipe is so good that I have gone through a big bottle of mushroom soy sauce using it only to make that one dish! And while it is true that some of the recipes are not vegetarian or vegan, I just want to add that I have been a vegetarian for a long time and I own dozens of vegetarian cookbooks, and for some reason the best ones are written by people who are not vegetarian!
Great Tofu Cookbook.......2006-03-14
I bought this cookbook after checking it out from the library two times in a row. It was so good, I wanted one! In fact, it was so good I bought two, one for me and one for my best friend.
Most of the recipes are vegetarian, and can be adapted to vegan if needed. The entire book is worth the price for the soy chorizo recipe. It is excellent.
Book Description
This landmark work, first published by Sierra Club Books in 1988, has established itself as a foundational volume in the ecological canon. In it, noted cultural historian Thomas Berry provides nothing less than a new intellectual-ethical framework for the human community by positing planetary well-being as the measure of all human activity.
Drawing on the wisdom of Western philosophy, Asian thought, and Native American traditions, as well as contemporary physics and evolutionary biology, Berry offers a new perspective that recasts our understanding of science, technology, politics, religion, ecology, and education. He shows us why it is important for us to respond to the Earth's need for planetary renewal, and what we must do to break free of the "technological trance" that drives a misguided dream of progress. Only then, he suggests, can we foster mutually enhancing human-Earth relationships that can heal our traumatized global biosystem.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful and Compelling!.......2007-03-30
The Dream of the Earth is a classic on environmental philosophy. It may perhaps be the most important environmental book ever written outside of Rachal Carson's Silent Spring. Berry tells us what went wrong and what needs to be done to reverse the dysfunction. A must read for anyone who loves our Earth Mother.
Healing the Earth.......2004-09-22
Our planet, Gaia, is sorely in need of healing. Her earth, waters, and air are polluted. Natural resources are being depleted. Thousands of plant and animal species are becoming extinct.
In this classic book, Thomas Berry summarizes and discusses the dire needs of our planet for healing. While not going so far as to advocate spiritual healing as a solution, Berry strongly advocates for awareness of the innate intelligence of Gaia.
Berry masterfully explores the mind-sets that have contributed to the dangerous depletion of our planetary resources. He suggests that we have yet to find the guiding myths and images to inspire us to relinquish our focus on personal and national material gains in order to properly focus our energies on relating to Gaia in a harmonious way.
The annotated bibliography invites focused further reading.
A Fine Guide To Earth/Universe Connectivity.......2004-02-13
Thomas Berry has put together in this one book what a thousand other writers have attempted and that is: a complete format for human perception of reality that should and can pervade through all our earthly activities, esp. religion, politics and economy. Let Earth and it's biolgical processes teach and guide us to a rational, sustainable, regenerative, healthy existence.
There are many potent passages all through this work and I picked out one that I felt was inclusive of the gist of the book.
..."This universe itself, but especially the planet Earth, needs to be experienced as the primary healer, primary commercial establishment, and primary lawgiver for all that exists within this life community. The basic spirituality communicated by the natural world can also be considered as normative for the future ecological age."- Page 120
This is an excellent treatise on reverence for the creative life forces that sustain us and treat us daily to a plethora of interactive life processes and our need to acknowledge this gift by treating it with the awe and respect it deserves.
A Global Story, A Saving Story.......2003-12-22
In one of his Dialogues, Plato says that the most serious difficulty one faces when attempting to philosophize is in "finding a suitable story for what one wants to say." But it's a difficulty worth facing at this time in history because a suitable story may serve to energize and advance current efforts to develop a globally responsible spirituality.
Everywhere we hear from perceptive folk that our conventional story has grown dangerously obsolete, and only by reimagining the world and our place in it can we advance beyond the dysfunctional limits of the old story.
The "dream of the earth" so beautifully described in this work by "geologian" Thomas Berry just may be the "big enough story" needed now to creatively navigate the global transition from a way of destruction to a way of sustainable wisdom rooted in a respect for the earth as respect for our very own bodies
New Age Religion in the Guise of Christianity.......2003-04-12
Don't be misled. Because Thomas Berry is promoted as a Catholic priest, many people are falsely led to believe that his books present Catholic or Christian teaching about the environment. Instead, this book presents a New Age blend of do-it-yourself religion mixed with pseudo-science. If you're into that, you'll probably like this book...

Really Helpful.......2007-04-02
The entries are very helpful for a beginner in OA. I have found that the entries stick with me throughout the day and help me to understand concepts that I am struggling with. For example, I had difficulty envisioning abstinence as anything but impossible. After reading a few of the entries on abstinence, I was able to define it in a way that I am comfortable with - abstinence is freedom.
It is a good little book. I cannot speak for long time members of OA, but as a beginner, this book is helpful in finding my own worth away from food.
Great way to start the day.......2000-09-21
I purchased the book, FOOD FOR THOUGHT, a few years ago. Elizabeth L. knows what she is talking about. I read a daily meditation each morning and always find something in the writing that pretains to me. If you suffer from compulsive overeating, buy FOOD FOR THOUGHT. It's very inspirational.
Very Insightful and Supportive.......2000-02-29
This book has been a great support for me. I often go back to passages over and over. It is supportive and written in a positive manner. It addresses motivation, making mistakes, forgivness, you name it. I know people that use this book for mediations even if they aren't over eaters. I highly, highly recommend this book!
Book Description
First issued in 1948, when soulless minute steaks and quick casseroles were becoming the norm,
The Unprejudiced Palate inspired a seismic culinary shift in how America eats. Written by a food-loving immigrant from Tuscany, this memoir-cum-cookbook articulates the Italian American vision of the good life: a backyard garden, a well-cooked meal shared with family and friends, and a passion for ingredients and cooking that nourish the body and the soul.
Customer Reviews:
A must own for any lover of all things culinary.......2007-05-08
This is one of the best books of its kind ever written.
Originally composed nearly 60 years ago, it reads as if it'd been submitted to the publisher only recently. His culinary opinions are spot on, and his writing style is wonderful. One of my all time favorites.
Great Book.......2007-01-22
I picked it up based on the reviews from others. Excellent book. Very much of a how to enjoy a balanced life kind of a philosophy.
yes, except booze for babies.......2006-02-27
this is a great book, nothing made me want to leave my urban lifestyle as much as reading about his gardens and 50 feet of raspberry bushes and making his own wine and foraging, and reading about his wild working childhood in Italy makes me want to take my boys to the country. However, I draw the line at putting rum in my 3 year old's coffee. I draw the line at the coffee! but booze? Very dated in a somewhat weird way, unlike the rest of the book which is timeless. Except for that chapter I am a believer.
Unprejudiced palate?.......2005-11-29
Ms. Waters says that the book should be called "The prejudiced palate", and I agree. Angelo Pellegrini's book is both a cookbook and a gustatory memoir. It reminded me of many foods that I have not had since I was a child growing up in southern Spain, including rabbit, and odd cuts of meat, impossible to find at the local market. This book is a must for anyone interested in basic cooking, able to find and use wonderful ingredients with minimum fuss. It is also a lesson in taking advantage of the bounty available in the US and using it to full advantage. It is a great read, funny and intelligent
IF YOU LOVE MFK FISHER, READ ON..........1997-11-18
It's hard to believe this book was written and published in the '50s, when watery pot roast and martinis were America's idea of fodder for dinner parties. I loved Pellegrini's story about searching for olive oil in a friend's medicine cabinet, so he could dress a chicken--no one used olive oil for cooking then! You can skip every fancy book out now on Tuscan cuisine, trattoria cooking, etc. once you have this book, because it has the best recipes for risotto, rabbit, chicken, polenta, greens, cardoons, and more importantly, it makes an argument for eating well but in moderation -- a more sensible way to keep weight down without spoiling one's enjoyment of food. GARDENERS should also read this book, or his book, THE FOOD LOVER'S GARDEN. He writes just as lovingly about working in his garden as he does about cooking the foods he grows in it. Forget expensive organic produce at your local grocery and follow his instructions for a home garden to eat from, especially if you live in a mild climate like Prof. Pellegrini did (Seattle, WA).
Customer Reviews:
can see why it's out of print... .......2007-08-19
I really wanted to love this cookbook. It's been on my most wanted listed for years. Finally I caved and bought a used copy.
The text is... contrived. There are small quotes and sayings throughout the book that are not Naomi's own. Which is part of the disappointment. It seems like she is trying to hard to appeal to Ms. Betty Homemaker. "I suggest you spend more time and less money on your kids", "You know you've met the wrong doctor when... offers to paint your car for $50"... and this doesnt even get into the two pages on how to be a good wife (an excerpt from a 1950's magazine, offered in jest?) and overuse of quotes on family statistics "about 75% of women dont know what's for dinner... until 4pm", "the avg american eats 1/3 of his/her meals away from home"...
So getting to the recipes... nothing seems overly great or amazing. My attempt at the corndogs was miserable with repeated effort and following the recipe to the T. Getting the oil to 370' would burn the corndog batter. At 270' they would brown too quickly and form a big air bubble on one side refusing to turn in the oil. And the flavor wasnt anything to write home about let alone fit to publish.
I'm very disappointed that I even bought the used copy.
"76% of married women work outside the home. In 1950, only 28%"; "Dinner conversation appetizer: ask each other 'what would you be doing if you knew you couldnt fail?'"....
A delightful read and the recipes are good too!.......2004-04-28
The recipes for fried chicken, coconut cake and macaroni and cheese are really good. Plus, the book is entertaining with anecdotes and stories from Naomi. The book really is a keeper.
One of my better cookbooks---.......2003-01-11
I have made about 1/3 to 1/2 of the recipes with much success. The BBQ chicken is fabulous! A few disappointments (such as Tammy Wynette's Pork Chops) but overall good, simple, country food. The recipes are easy to follow. The many pictures are great---about 2/3's of the recipes have pictures, and, of course, you will see pictures of Naomi and her family in various times of their lives with interesting stories. I highly recommend this if you are a country music fan and a "country" cook---this would not be for you if you are looking for the Julia Child style of cooking.
Cookin' Judd Style.......2001-01-31
Actually a very delightful recipe book, with lots of cute Southern tidbits of wisdom and the such. The photos are spectacular, especially of Wynonna. That's the only reason why I bought the book. Too bad it is out of print, a lot of people will miss out.
Comfort Food.......1999-12-02
This is a wonderful cookbook. The recipes call for basic ingredients and are easy to make and taste delicious. I grew up eating food like this, reminded me of my childhood, hence "comfort food". The photos and Naomi's inspirations make you want to invite your family and friends over for dinner! This book would be a great Christmas present.
Book Description
The authors of HOW ARE YOU PEELING? serve up a cornucopia of concepts in this big book for brilliant babies. Shapes: Is that a carrot, or a triangle? Colors: Watch for peppers in every range of the rainbow. Numbers: A zero-to-ten zoo! ABCs: A full produce section of sculptures acts out the alphabet. And Opposites: You've never seen Up/Down and Big/Little like this before! Every time we think Saxton Freymann can do no more with bok choy or broccoli, he astonishes us all over again. And this book is one-stop shopping for all parents' early-childhood education needs. Try some FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
Customer Reviews:
My boys love this book.......2007-09-29
I had a couple of the Saxton Freymann books hanging around the house from my teaching days (Dog Food and How Are You Peeling). My 4 year old twins found them one day and loved them. I ordered them Food for Thought for Christmas last year and it is still a highly requested bedtime book. I love looking at the pictures as much as they do! It is amazing how they accomplish this using only food items.
Expressive food.......2007-08-30
Another picture book from the creative minds of Elffers and Freymann. This one illustrates concepts (shapes and colors, numbers and letters, opposites) with big, bold, and colorful photos of fruits and vegetables carved and combined into expressive faces and adorable animals and scenes. Each page is a new puzzle: H for Hair is easily identified as a leek (you might have to explain 'leek' to a child), root end up, but what are the 'insects'? (blueberries with onionskin wings). The humor may occasionally go over a child's head (look at X for X-ray) but that doesn't matter, he will still love identifying the fruits and vegetables the characters are made of. This is a wonderful book for group reading, children are captivated by the colors and illustrations and the large format makes it easy to see even for the children toward the back of the group. If you've liked others in this series you won't want to miss this one.
Wonderful, Creative Book my kids (1-1/2 & 4) Love it.......2007-07-30
It's got a little bit of everything--fruits & vegetables, colors, shapes, letters, animals, opposites. Even adults will say "how imaginative!"
Start Eating!.......2007-03-30
Food for Thought is a conceptual picture book that consists of photographed pieces of fruit and vegetables that are carved into animal shapes. So, two strawberries become a dog holding a piece of watermelon shaped into an umbrella with an asparagus handle. This book is fun for a reader of any age, because it's interesting to see how they fashioned food into art, and to distinguish both the animal depicted and the food used on each page. The concepts though, like all the letters of the alphabets, single digit numerals, shapes, colors and opposites (big and small, hold and cold, etc.) are perfect for reading readiness. They are also adorably depicted and easily understood even for very young children. The concept of this book is innovative, fun, and I highly recommend it.
Delightful book!.......2007-02-15
This book is so imaginative and delightful. The expressions the artists have created from simple foods is astounding. I got this for my 3-year-old niece and we read it together over and over again. My own children, ages 7 and 9 enjoyed looking at the pictures too. My favorite picture is one of an orange cut in such a way that it looks like it's bawling its eyes out with its mouth wide open. They managed to get the flesh of the orange to look like a tongue. What imagination!

How to Feed a Crusader.......2006-01-29
From the moment her son Ralph came to national attention, Rose Nader was constantly asked, "What did you feed Ralph?" People weren't just curious about her son's impressive height (6'4") - they wanted to know what they should cook in order to create someone like Ralph Nader, that rare creature blessed with a compassionate heart and the brains and talent to do battle against overwhelming forces - like, say, General Motors. If "You Are What You Eat" is true (and it is; our bodies are made of food), what is Ralph Nader made of? What are the secret ingredients? To answer that question, Mrs. Nader wrote "It Happened in The Kitchen: Recipes For Food and Thought", a book about cooking and child-rearing, with a bonus chapter containing the wit and wisdom of Ralph's father, Nathra Nader, the Oscar Wilde of Winsted, Connecticut.
Mrs. Nader was a woman ahead of her time, a homemaker who cooked low-fat recipes and disdained hot dogs and processed foods made by corporations who had no qualms about pushing their junk foods on the public - and specifically, on impressionable children.
Mrs. Nader lived to be 99 (she died just 18 days shy of her 100th birthday). Ralph's father lived to be 98. At the party celebrating the 40th anniversary of the publication of Ralph's landmark book, "Unsafe at Any Speed," I personally witnessed 71-year-old Ralph, at the end of a long day, jogging up two flights of stairs. No matter what you think of Ralph or where you stand politically, that visual should be enough to make you put on your apron and whip up a big batch of hummus. The recipe can be found on page 44 of "It Happened in the Kitchen."
excellent hummus recipe!.......2000-03-03
i got this book quite a few years ago b'c i had seen ralph nader and his mom on oprah. it was touching and beautiful to hear his mom's philosophy on life and how it all starts with good food. recipes call for whole and fresh foods only -- which is very old world, and very healthy. Ms. Nader grew up in Lebanon, so there are many middle eastern spices and ingredients used. although there are lamb and beef recipes (which i personally have a problem with) there is a fish section as well as one for vegetable-only main dishes. the hummus is the best, and you can adjust it easily to suit your tastebuds...more garlic? more lemon! yum. there are also desserts, bread, yogurt and cheese recipes. the preface is thought-provoking...ralph's mom's (rose's) reflections on food, family and how the two were so important to the development of her mind and her perspective on life. also, she talks about how the time preparing the meals as well as eating them was where you really got to know your family and relatives. i can totally relate to this with my italian background. a lot of my best memories are times spent enjoying food with family. the concept is basic, but often lost in today's micro-wave, fast-food, processed food society.
Book Description
The Incredible Life Story of the World’s Most Successful Restaurateur Will Whet Your Appetite for Inspiration and Success
Known as “the Steven Spielberg of the restaurant industry,” Phil Romano has achieved a higher rate of success than any other restaurateur in history. During the past 40 years, he has launched more than 25 dining concepts and amassed a restaurant empire valued in excess of $10 billion.
More than 10 million customers a year in 48 states and 8 foreign countries visit a Phil Romano eatery, no doubt many back for seconds. In Food for Thought: How the Creator of Fuddrucker’s, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, and eatZi’s Built a $10 Billion Empire One Concept at a Time, Romano shares his recipe for success.
From dreaming up an original concept all the way to reaping a jaw-dropping return on investment, Romano reveals the distinctive process and “operational-integrity creed” he follows to create a winning eatery, including:
•How to achieve the entrepreneurial mindset and recognize opportunity when it crosses your path •“Service is primary. Profit is secondary” •Getting out of the “dining business” and into the “eating business” •How to recognize a great idea in a world of mediocre ones •Utilizing a network approach to management; i.e. “Nobody works for me, they work with me” •“Difference and points of difference are what makes success, not just brilliance” Written with candor and spiced with humor, Food for Thought provides a fascinating look at the hits and misses of Romano’s remarkable career. Whether you’re a novice entrepreneur or seasoned pro, it’s sure to help you cook up your own ideas and strategies for success in any industry.
Customer Reviews:
Food for thought provides excellent thought.......2006-12-18
Romano has built one of the great food empires and keeps on creating more. He has had over 25 different restaurant concepts and has made billions. He focuses on the creative content and the principles that have created hit after hit. He also analyzes his failures and the reason for why they failed. While Fuddruckers is arguably his most successful Romano's Macaroni grill has also prospered and even though both were sold off reading about their beginning was fascinating. His newest restaurant EatZi's is a great idea that combines upscale grocery store with eating experience. It will be interesting to see if this idea takes off outside of the large cities it is being tired in but overall this book will fascinate you and leave you wanting to start a restaurant of your own.
A Truly Fascinating Business Story.......2006-07-06
If you're in business, any business you can learn from Phil Romano. His grandmother taught him early about visualization, saying, "Talk of the devil and he will appear, talk about failure and it will happen, talk about success and you'll have it."
Phil never worked in a restaurant before owning one and has never relied on anyone but himself for a paycheck.
As I always like to point out in my reviews and my Blog (The Real Estate Investors Blog) there are several invaluable techniques as far as deal structure. Starting with the structure of Fuddruckers:
After being turned down for a bank loan Phil rounded up 10 investors at $15,000 a pop and gave them 48% and kept 52% for himself. So they put up the money and he ran it and called the shots. That 15k grew to $3.4 million in less than 2 years. This was his 12th restaurant concept and he walked away with $17 million.
His next move is mind boggling. He invested $250k to back the investors of the heart stint and walked away with $165 million over the next 17 years or thereabouts.
Then he's on to The Macaroni Grill, buying entire towns and toying with different concepts. He took a gas station from doing $500k in revenues to $5 million. Then there's Nachomama's, Spegeddies and EatZi's a 50/50 partnership with Phil and Brinker which was doing $3,000 per sq. foot in sales. Everything from the structure, the numbers and the margins are described.
Some Romano-isms:
"I've come to learn that creativity is mostly about identifying a problem and, instead of just living with it, coming up with a solution. Too many companies are resigned to working around problems instead of really addressing their cause."
"I don't predict the future; I imagine it. And my imagination has no bounds. Neither should yours."
"If you make a mistake in hiring someone, don't make the mistake in waiting too long to let them go. The problem will just get bigger and bigger."
"Throughout my life, I've often been asked why I don't do things by the book. Well, it's because "the book" is for people who aren't creative enough to figure out a better way."
"I've had my share of failures, most of which have been outlined in these pages. But something inside me has always said to get up, dust off, and move onto the next challenge with a positive attitude. Life is far to short to dwel on bad calls you've maid. Negative thinking can kill you, and it can infect others."
"I advise people in the restaurant business to dream big, imagine their success, and imagine the success of the employees around them. Negative thinking is toxic."
I bought the book for several of my friends, family and partners who are in the service industry and truly recommend it.

Philip J. Romano is "an idea man at heart." The innovative restaurateur launched multiple successful U.S. franchises, including Fuddruckers and Romano's Macaroni Grill. He discovered that people would pay for his concepts, so he kept thinking and opening new restaurants. In this chatty, inside-flavored autobiography, he shares his creative processes and the principles that guide his business decisions. He knows the hot dinner business cold, and doesn't mind saying so. We dish up this light, entertaining read to those who are interested in entrepreneurial success stories or to anyone who wants an insider's view of the restaurant business.
A great story, some real inspiration & business sense.......2005-05-18
I love reading about the creativity behind the business. I admire someone who has the courage to follow through on his inspiration. Phil Romano did it over and over again. I do believe that he puts service before profit -- the proof is in the restaurants themselves. This book makes me curious about the ones I haven't tried yet, and I'm waiting for what's next.
I even culled some business tips -- some rules to live by. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for some inspiration, a good story, and some sound business moves.
great business book.......2005-05-17
I just recently read WINNING by Jack Welch and I have to tell you that book is just a good. It is a real quick read and there was so much great info from front to cover. And, it is actually quite funny.
I reccommend this book as a great summer read.

Great fun on my refrigerator.......2007-01-10
These calendars (this is my third year) are the most fun. Every time you fill in an appointment you will smile. It's amazing how they come up with so many new ideas each year.
cute and functional calendar.......2007-01-09
I love this calendar! The pictures are so clever and inventive. The boxes are spacious enough to write lots of stuff in. It makes a great gift and I've given several to my friends and family.
