Book Description

This is the first-ever English-language edition of the book Leo Tolstoy considered to be his most important contribution to humanity, the work of his life's last years. Widely read in prerevolutionary Russia, banned and forgotten under Communism; and recently rediscovered to great excitement, A Calendar of Wisdom is a day-by-day guide that illuminates the path of a life worth living with a brightness undimmed by time. Unjustly censored for nearly a century, it deserves to be placed with the few books in our history that will never cease teaching us the essence of what is important in this world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Prophetic.......2006-08-17

Immediately upon purchasing this book, I ordered another and sent it to my cousin who subsequently purchased 3, one for her husband who had opened the one I sent to her and begun highlighting passages and the other 2 she gave to her children who are in college. I know that Tolstoy viewed this as one of his greatest accomplishments in life and read from it every day. I read it cover to cover in about a week and then went back and picked up so that I can study each day. I never say that books change my life. I do think that I am the type of person who, when presented with something that resonates with my soul, I immediately align my actions with whatever it happens to be. There are many passages in this book that resonate with me, some of which elevated my thoughts and actions to a new level. I think that is why it meant so much to Tolstoy to leave this as his final work.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Living.......2006-03-04

For those who like and need a reminder that we are part of a larger world; and a beautiful world at that. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The best quote book.......2006-01-29

I have always liked Tolstoy but this book made me respect him even more. He was so deep, and spiritual. The book has 365 pages, each having a couple of deep thoughts for each day of the year. I haven't read many quote books so far but this one is worth the money that I spent on it. I found some of them excellent, some very good, while very few just so so. It depends on what you can relate to. You will love the ones that apply to your life and experiances. Overall, a nice book.

5 out of 5 stars Tolstoy wrote a trilogy of wise thoughts.......2006-01-02

This timeless masterpiece is a part of a larger work created by the great novelist and thinker. Tolstoy produced a trilogy of wise thoughts: 1 - "The Calendar of Wisdom," 2 - "Thoughts of Wise Men," 3 - "Wise Thoughts for Every Day."

The last book in this trilogy, "Wise Thoughts for Every Day," was recently published in English by Arcade Publishers (2005) and is another Tolstoy masterpiece worth reading!

The major difference between these two books is the following: "The Calendar" presents aphorisms by Tolstoy's favorite writers and philosophers; and "Wise Thoughts" includes thoughts on the same topics - that is God, love, our life, family, money, faith, etc. - written by Tolstoy himself.

Tolstoy considered this book "more important" than any other book he has ever written, he repeatedly read excerpts from it to his family and friends, and highly recommended it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2005-05-08

This book is amazing. The more you read it the more insights you get into how we should live our lives. I keep it often with me since I bought it and I find it useful in overcoming everyday difficulties. It makes me strive to be a better person, thank you Tolstoy.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-08-14

I liked this book because it explained in detail, the proper use of ingredients. It gives easy to use formulas as well as giving explanations of why certain ingredients were used and substitutions of ingredients to get the results you desire. Some reviewers said the products were difficult to find, but with a simple web search, I found Glory Bees Food to be an excellent source. This book is a great start if you want to start a business. It helps you to understand the process of formulation. Thus far, this is my favorite book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Aromatheraphy.......2007-08-09

I really loved this book the only draw back is that most things you made have to go in the refrigerator,
I would really like someone to come out with receipes that are marketable and preserved with things like essential oils instead of just having to put everything in the frig.
#1 My kids might think it is food and try it.
#2 I don't think the next time you go to use it cold stuff on your face is not what you are after for your skin to asborb ingredients it needs to be warm not cold.
#3 It is alittle confusing. I couldn't figure out what they meant by a certain type of oil. This book is defintely not for the beginner and it is not easily readable for making receipes.
#4 It would have been better had they made the book like a receipe book with the spiral binding so when you are trying to make the receipe the book is easy to keep open.
I would like to see more research done on the foods on your skin verses the other products people are using. People need to see real results that have been tested and tried and then documented. Maybe a college could do this for someone??? I know that if people are not careful they could transfer bacteria to their skin if they left the product in the frig to long and keep using it. Yes I know just like food but if they aren't aware of the dangers it could have adverse side effects.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-20

This is a great book...exactly what I was looking for. This jumpstarted me on my journey to creating some awesome recipes with the basic knowledge I needed to creating my own lotions, etc. I would recommend this to anyone who really wants to do things right, and healthy.

5 out of 5 stars Making aromatherapy creams and lotions.......2007-05-20

arrived in excellent condition and quicker than delivery date specified.

2 out of 5 stars dissapointing.......2006-04-03

The book gives great information on the basic ingredients for lotions , but theres no "SIMPLE beginners recipe" in here, except perhaps at the end in the "Beauty Food" chapter.
many of the recipes make such a small amount of lotion that youre measuring infintessimal amounts of ingredients.
I would have preferred to see a couple of simpler recipes included, using perhaps one or two easily available oils rather than a half dozen oils that all have to be specially ordered.
At the end of the book I find myself thnking, hmmm. I'm so glad this isnt the first book I read on how to make lotions and etc.
My final take on it is , Great if youre looking for inspiration, not so great if you think this will bring you the easy starter recipes .

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Program.......2007-07-17

I tried the Nutrisystem program originally to debunk it. Several diet plans failed me. Once you leave the program, you revert back to the weight you were. In my case, Nutrisystem helped me to make lifestyle changes that everyone can apply whether you leave the program or not. I chose to stay, because I like the food and it's a convenient way to shop. NS stresses portion control. Some have discipline and some don't. If you do and don't want to buy the food, read this book. If you need a push in the right direction, read this book and order the month's worth of food.

It worked for me. With the diet and exercise, I lost 120 lbs over 18 months.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow........2007-07-17

Solid principals (Glycemic Index), but it's unclear and difficult to follow, and frankly uninteresting/uninspiring. They know what they are doing, but either don't know how or choose not to communicate it clearly.

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-03-16

I have found this book to very informative and helpful in following the Nutrisystem plan. You can use it by itself, or in conjuction with the NS foods.

5 out of 5 stars The Revolutionary New Weight-Loss Program.......2007-01-04

I found this book to be very useful in getting a better understanding of the Nutrisystem Program. I was using their food products and now I am able to continue to loss weight on my own following the books guidelines.

4 out of 5 stars Great to have even if you are currently on NS.......2006-03-29

Even if you are currently buying your food from NS, this is a great book to have as a resource. Eventually you will reach your goal and be on your own, and the book will become your guide on maintaining your success. You can't beat the price for keeping your health.

Book Description

The Yoga of Eating is a practical and inspiring manual that offers original insights on the physical and spiritual functions of sugar, fat, meat, and other foods; fasting, dieting, processing, willpower, and the deeper principles of self-nurture. This book appeals to a higher authority--your own body--and shows how to access and trust the wisdom your body has to offer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awareness rather than a diet.......2007-05-02

This book is not about ayurveda or following any other diet program, and does not include recipes or identify what you should eat. The author offers suggestions about how to bring more awareness to your eating habits and life. His solution is to stop forcing your body to conform to the mind or the latest diet strategy. Instead, pay as much attention as possible to each aspect of eating, from "Am I hungry?" to savoring each bite to listening for when the body is satisfied. If the bite doesn't taste good, then the body doesn't need it or want it. He addresses and proposes ideas for cravings, including theories for psychological understanding.

For the more spiritually evolved, he confronts the idea that enlightened people eat vegan, or survive only on air, etc. Just because an enlightened person eats only vegetables doesn't mean that eating only vegetables makes you enlightened. The author suggests that that your body will tell you when you're vegetarian, not your mind. There's even a nice essay about eating meat versus eating vegan from a consciousness evolution and cultural impact perspective.

He offers a highly conscious perspective for those seeking to bring more awareness to their lives. If you're open to the idea of accessing your body's own intelligence or intuition and looking for perspectives to move you further along, then this book will be valuable. If you're looking to be told what to eat, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminates the Body/Mind/Spirit of Eating. .......2007-03-31

Readers of today's diet and nutrition books face bewildering and contradictory advice. Eisenstein's gift is to help us cut through all the mental chatter and learn to trust in the higher authority of our own bodies. As we cultivate this inner wisdom, we will learn to distinguish artificial addictions from authentic appetites and identify foods that not only bring us great pleasure but support our quest for health. As a student of yoga, I love this profoundly simple book.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of talking but not much use.......2007-01-23

This is the lowest rating I've given a product. It goes on and on. I was expecting diet plans, receipes, etc to plan a yoga diet - nothing here. I gave up reading it after the first few pages.

5 out of 5 stars Goes far beyond diet..........2007-01-07

The author was one of my "professors" in college. This guy understands the universe on a deeper level then most. The ideas in this book will change your perceptions about your relationship to the food you eat and the air you breath. This is not new-age babble, it is a harmonious combination of logic, commonsense and spirituality that just feels right. Buy this book now, it will not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking food relationship ideas.......2006-10-02

The Yoga of Eating is one of those books that threatens to change your entire relationship with food. And if you're ready for it, it can be one of the most positive changes you'll ever experience.

Eisenstein has a way of looking at & explaining things that's so far removed from traditional diet - and even holistic nutrition - books. Not one to be wave the flag of any extreme diet position, he humbly suggests not adhering to a particular diet for adhering's sake; but to listen to your body and give it what it needs. You might think a book with a title like "The Yoga of Eating" would recommend a vegetarian diet high in fruits and veggies, grumbling about the evils of heavy items like meat and cheese. Not so. The message is, eat meat if your body calls for it; abstain if your body calls for it.

The innate wisdom of our bodies far surpasses what we can understand or comprehend with science - a simple concept with huge implications. How many of us actually silence the diet "rules" governing our food choices long enough to "ask" our bodies, "What is it you need right now?"

The author's unique way of turning things over and presenting them in a fresh way can be seen on p 45, where he says,

"To put it in simple terms, if you only taste a tenth of your food's flavor, then you need to eat ten times the quantity, or food with flavors ten times more powerful, to get the same aesthetic nourishment. Therefore we can infer a delicious irony: We overeat not because we enjoy food too much, but because we do not enjoy it enough!"

While some chapter become vague and repetitive, and the writing style dry and non-engaging at points, determined readers will find enough wisdom and there-is-no-box thinking fodder to help them drastically change their relationship with food for the better.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-01

The basic premise of this book is that if the Buddha (or insert your own spiritual role model here) came to dinner, you would probably prepare food with much more care, love, and attention that you would for just yourself -- you wouldn't just dump something out of a can and chow it down in front of the television. The book is about learning to love yourself and nourish yourself in that same way, and realizing that you are deserving of this attention. It is a book not just about food, but about life and learning to live it without just going through the motions. It explains why whole foods are more nourishing for your body, and has some wonderful recipes in the back. I think it is an excellent read for those who are looking for a more mindful way of living.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read/not so easy concept.......2007-03-13

This book is great. I love the idea of fasting, eating according to my senses and only eating what's in season in my vicinity. But how realistic is THAT for most people? I tried it, but man, here in the high desert, that really limits what I'm eating. This woman teaches and writes beautifully. Her recipes are amazing. Oh, and her website is beautiful, go check it out.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" book..........2006-08-11

I just finished reading "If the Buddha Came to Dinner". I thoroughly enjoyed it. One reading isn't enough, I find myself paging through it and stopping at certain sections from time to time. I tried a few recipes and really like them. I just ordered it for a friend of mine. The book speaks to your body and soul.

5 out of 5 stars changed my life.......2005-12-22

I went on the three-week cleanse and have never felt better. Weight loss, while a goal for me, was secondary to how I felt and the concept of nourishing rather than feeding oneself. (I did lose 20 pounds on the 3 week cleanse.) Be warned though - if you choose to cleanse for 3 weeks it requires a time commitment. I found it helpful to actually plan out a week's menu (for shopping, prep and diverisifcation of meals).

Recipes are good and very versatile. I have several friends who are now also interested in "clean" food and love coming to my house for dinner - even the skeptics.

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought?.......2004-05-11

If The Buddha Came to Dinner is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the entire wholeness of food and feel great. This book illustrates that, as people, we often eat in our busy lives without connecting to the food. This is easily evident in everything fast these days. The book shows us how to take an opportunity we all have several times a day to connect with food and the spirituality that it feeds.

The book takes you through a very manageable cleanse with many great healthy happy and delicious recipes. Looking at food in this manner has guided me to more clarity, energy, focus, and curiosity in ways to eat refreshingly.

I am grateful to Hale for pointing out a simple and fun way to understand the importance of to whom we feed and how we feed it. This has shown us a way to access a stronger and vivid connection just by looking into what we eat to make us thrive.

I hope there will be more books by this author to come.

This book may not necessarily tell you something that you don't know already. However, it may just jog your memory. Great for gift giving.

3 out of 5 stars Read this book & gain organization, but not spiritual health.......2005-06-03

St. James gives advice for reducing the clutter in her readers' lives. By helping them organize, her book can help people gain the time they need to enjoy life. The book doesn't tell them how to become less materialistic or more spiritual and healthy.

5 out of 5 stars Begin to change your life here........2005-02-10

I'm checking in since first reading this little "gem" years ago. It called me from the bookstore shelf and was instrumental in changing my life for the better. Each chapter jump-starts your motivation for, not only rethinking priorities, but re-evaluating the need to separate wants from needs. That had become a blur to me over the years.

St. James is true to her word. The title suggests simplicity, and the content is simple to assimilate. Besides, I'm a sucker for an easy read. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the chapter, Slow Down, started a new improved - hopefully, forever - chapter in my life. It simply changed everything.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Guide..........2004-03-07

INNER SIMPLICITY is a set of 100 suggestions that can improve the quality of your life. Like the parables of old, this little book holds many bits of wisdom that can lead to happiness and contentment. No matter what your life circumstances, St. James words can be applied in some measure. For example, I am using a suggestion she makes for encouraging yourself in a `good' behavior. Each day I remember to exercise, I stick a shiny little star on my wall calender. The calender looks pretty and I feel good (if it works for children, why not reward your own inner child??). Another suggestion St James makes involves "examining the costs of saying no." Along with reducing the need to be "in the know" it goes a long way toward making life more pleasant.

You can use these `readings' as daily guides. I read the book from cover to cover over several weeks, and now refer to various suggestions each day. Each suggestion is a (small) page or two in length, so you can read it at the start of your day. Frequently the suggestions are interlinked. For example, figuring out `what you have to teach others' is linked with `learning to forgive'. I like this book so much I am going to read others by St James - especially `Living the Simple Life'.

5 out of 5 stars The universe whispers the same hints to us all - simplify..........2003-11-26

When it comes to the art of simplifying one's life it would be hard to find a better practical guide. I highly recommend it- not because I followed it to simplify my own life, but because I found that I had already discovered practically every one of the 100 entries on my own. It was almost uncanny that I had come to the same conclusions and techniques in my own quest towards simplicity (life review, discarding nonsupportive relationships, journal keeping, wisdom literature, listening to one's inner voice, reducing media exposure, discarding useless distractions, practice dieing, weekend retreats, etc., etc., etc.) Of course the author lists Synchronicity as #10, so perhaps I shouldn't have been so surprised. It seems that the universe whispers the same hints to all of us, if we merely quiet down enough to hear.

This is not a trivial, hippy-dippy, New Age title. The author is a former business woman. While it is true that she refers to synchronicity, meditation, yoga, runes, and consulting a psychic, she does so not because it is the newest, hip, New Age fad, but rather because it represents an ancient, effective, wisdom.

One of the hundred suggestions listed is to take a year off from work and do nothing. This is sound advice- I grew immeasurably when I did this. Be cautioned, however, that the corporate world will never forgive you for this. If you try to re-enter the corporate structure this will be a permanent black mark on your work record. Of course, once you internalise the other 99 tips in the book you will probably never wish to return to the corporate hierarchy anyway....

It's better than not having something available, but I liked Stories of the Spirit Stories of the Heart so much better. I wish it were not out of print. I have given at least 20 as gifts. Last Christmas I had to give Soul Food because I couldn't get "Stories".

    4 out of 5 stars Worth a second read - buy two........1998-01-09

"Soul Food" is a joy to read. Recently I have read the wonder-filled and inspiring "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" which reminded me of Kornfield and Feldman's and so I returned to it for a second time. Both these books should be brought down from the shelf when the sun goes down - extend daylight without putting your hydro bill up!. I had forgotten what pleasure I found in first reading Soul food.

5 out of 5 stars The best Vegetarian Book I have ever read thus far.......2007-09-23

I am not a strict vegetarian and often get confused or uninterested in the menus many vegetarian cookbooks offer.
Cathe Olson has written a simple book, easy menu's, and most of all delicious recipes.

We have been enjoying so many tasty items from this cookbook. Not only for pregnant women, but for the entire family and your friends.

5 out of 5 stars Great vegetarian cookbook.......2007-08-09

I wish I'd had this cookbook when I was pregnant. I bought it now that I am nursing. It has lots of great recipes to help with for common pregnancy symptoms/problems. As well as for when nursing. It seems to be a great cookbook for day to day for the whole family anyway as the recipes are all very healthful and nutrtious, yet not complicated which is especially great when pregnant, as well as a busy mom!

5 out of 5 stars Just as expected.......2007-08-01

Great book - just as it was described. Came in a timely manner, and was less than I could have gotten it at Barnes and Nobel (not including the shipping of course) but being 8 weeks preggers and TOO SICK to move, it was the best route for me to take. Thanks a bunch - Love it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Natural Food Inspiration.......2007-04-15

Though I do not qualify as a vegetarian mother or mother-to-be, this cookbook is easily one of my all time favorites. My copy has nearly doubled in size from all of the pages I have earmarked to trial. I have already trialed the Gingery Black Beans and Sweet Potato Salad w/ Peanut Butter Dressing. Both were easy to prepare, delicious, and surprisingly filling as a main dish. The author has also inspired me to purchase a few new-to-me ingredients, such as wheat berries, for her Wheat Berry Pilaf, and some coconut oil to prepare the wheat-free Coconut Almond Shortbread. I do hope that she opts to produce a second vegetarian / vegan cookbook titled for everyone. After all, we don't want the men to feel shy about purchasing and using her nutritious book of recipes!

A few of my extra notes & tips:

This cookbook contains over 300 recipes, all of which are vegetarian, most of which are vegan/dairy-free or have vegan/dairy-free options

The recipes are fairly easy to follow, with more than half containing 10 ingredients or less. They range from extremely simple options, like basic oatmeal and homemade ginger ale, to the slightly more complex tofu quiche and gluten-free bunt cake.

This is an attractive book, suitable for gift giving to women who are expecting. It is a unique and intelligent baby shower gift, that will likely stay in their collection long after the baby is born.

This cookbook deserves five stars for layout. The font is large enough and very easy to read, recipes are typically one per page, and the format is very simple to follow.

Though the entire book is not a one-size-fits-all for special diets (with the exception of vegetarian), there are many wonderful gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, and nut-free recipes throughout. It is up to the reader's discretion to pick the recipes that are suitable for their diet.

I am a dairy-free consumer, who is learning to cook vegan. Though the cookbook is geared more towards vegetarians who are tinkering with cutting out the dairy to go vegan, I found it incredibly useful.

    Book Description

To design in Zen is to design with beauty, simplicity, and harmony in mind, and to honor the true nature of every material. When applied to flower arranging, the Zen approach allows us to discover each flower's underlying qualities, and to use those qualities to enliven rooms, uplift spirits, and nurture lives. Zen Flowers shows both novices and seasoned designers how the ideals and spiritual values of minimalism can be applied in a very practical way to floral compositions.

Author Brenda Berkley, owner of a Los Angeles flower shop, shares her holistic perspective and provides a few basic principles—rather than a strict set of rules—for making simple but spectacular arrangements. Illustrated with 125 lush photographs, this elegant book demonstrates how to get started with flowers; how to choose the perfect container; how to work with light, space, and decor; and how a flower's color, texture, shape, and form all affect design. The reader is also invited to embrace the finer points of forming compositions, such as the proportion of flower to container. As delicately beautiful as it is quietly profound, this unique celebration of flowers shows how a touch of nature's bounty can transform an ordinary room into a tranquil sanctuary.
