Cooking maven M.F.K. Fisher gave her approval to these 1,300 high-fiber, low-fat, low-sugar, and low-salt vegetarian recipes. And for someone who lived for flavorful food, that's sure saying something. The Goldbecks have been fixtures in the American whole-foods movement for more than a decade, and here they have thoroughly succeeded with their goal of creating "mouth-watering food that tastes great and happens to be healthful."
They call the whole-foods diet a "Darwinian" one because it's similar to the diet that our ancestors followed 50,000 years ago--"foods provided by our habitat." The Goldbecks write, "Just as we cannot put unleaded gasoline in our 1950 Chevy pickup and expect it to run efficiently, modern technological foods may be inappropriate for our prehistoric bodies." The simplicity of this theory is outstanding, although rushed lifestyles and the ubiquity of convenience foods make it easy to eat overprocessed, unnutritious junk at every meal. With most of its delicious recipes utilizing seven or fewer ingredients, however, American Wholefoods Cuisine can help you take the plunge into a healthier way of feeding your body.

Customer Reviews:
American Wholefoods Cuisine.......2007-08-10
Trying to find a good all round vegetarian cookbook is quite a difficult task. Many of the vegetarian cookbooks I've come across are either gourmet and not really suitable for everyday meals or full of bland tofu recipes that resemble cardboard in taste and texture. Finding recipes that use only whole foods is even more difficult. I've only come across one or two good ones that had maybe a half dozen recipes that I could actually use in daily life. The rest were either extremely laborious or required fresh foods that weren't readily available in my area.
Then I stumbled across American Wholefoods Cuisine. I was intrigued with the notion of vegetarian recipes that contained all whole foods. I expected and would have been quite happy with a cookbook that gave me a dozen decent dishes to try. Therefore, when I received the book and it contained 1300 meatless whole foods recipes, I was thrilled beyond belief.
American Wholefoods Cuisine has already become one of my staple cookbooks, along with a few old standbys given to me by my mother and mother-in-law. This book has a lot of everything from quick tasty snacks that I can make in a few minutes to full gourmet meals that I can make when I'm in the mood. In between there are all sorts of appetizers, soups, sauces, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, and baking treats. All easy to create with ingredients that I already have in my kitchen.
Most importantly, the food made from these recipes actually tastes good. For the first time in my life, I can eat completely healthy and not feel like I'm missing out on something. What's more, I have an ever-expanding group of young adults that are devouring everything I make as fast as I can cook.
my favourite.......2007-06-07
I originally bought American Wholefoods Cuisine in the early 80's when my children were small. It quickly became our favourite cookbook. I like their philosophy, the recipes are very good and it has one of the most complete indexes I've ever seen. The introduction explains how to be sure you are getting complete protien when you eliminate animal protien from your diet. There is a section on food handling and storage as well as cooking techniques. I was pleased to see that it was available again. My current copy is much loved and I wanted to give a copy to each of my girls so they can recreate the favourite recipes of their childhood. In the past 20 years, hardly a week goes by without my consulting it.
So many great recipes, so little time.......2007-05-13
My sister-in-law recommended this book. She had prepared one recipe for a meal we shared during a recent visit and it was great. I asked for the receipe and she provided the title and said she had not found a bad recipe yet. I immediately ordered the book when I got home. My wife and I love this book. We keep going through it and writing down recipes we want to try. We have yet to find one that we don't like. Each is a repeat for the future
good veggie stuff.......2007-03-22
we are not vegetarians, but purchased this book as a part of our effort to incorporate more vegetarian meals into our weekly menu. i really appreciate that they mark the recipes with major, minor or protein complement so you can build a nutritionally sound meal that is also satisfying. i also like to short-list of themed menus at the back that makes planning meals easier. not all recipes have been winners, but we have enjoyed several quite a bit and nothing has been inedible. i dropped it from 5 to 4 stars bc the nutritional content of the meals is not provided and thus i have to do a lot of math in order to figure out how much fat/calories are in each dish.
Cooking For The Masses.......2007-02-02
If you buy only one vegetarian cookbook, this is the one. There are no fancy pictures and the recipes are very basic, but I wore out my first copy and am now on my second. This must say something for it! It has not changed, either, for which I am thankful. The recipes cover a wide range of ethnic and North American dishes and there should be something there for everyone.

Book Description
DO YOU DREAD FIXING DINNER EACH NIGHT, BUT ARE LOOKING FOR BETTER THAN TAKEOUT? THE AUTHORS OF THE BESTSELLING A DINNER A DAY SHOW YOU HOW TO PREPARE DELICIOUS, FAMILY-PERFECTED MEALS EVERY MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. If you're the cook in your household and crave comfort food that will bring your family back to the table, you need The Accidental Gourmet: Weeknights. Written by a gourmet and an I-hate-to-cook, this must-have volume translates Grandmother's cooking into today's lifestyle and gives new meaning to the term "fast food," as it brings variety, great taste, and fun back to home-cooked meals. In a unique approach to taking control of the kitchen, Sally Sondheim and Suzannah Sloan have created 260 brand-new menus -- including side dishes, and desserts -- that will allow time-pressed cooks to put together readily available ingredients with style and speed. There's no guesswork involved: Each menu is presented to you complete on two facing pages. The recipes are accompanied by organized shopping lists that make once-a-week marketing a snap, a rundown of necessary cooking equipment, and an indispensable preparation schedule that gets everything to the table on time. Each menu feeds an average family of four, but can easily be expanded or reduced to fit your needs, and the dishes highlight the freshest foods of the season, judiciously augmented by timesaving convenience foods. Now your family can enjoy such mouthwatering combinations as hearty chicken soup with carrots, beans, potatoes, and spinach, served with maple syrup muffins and strawberry-topped sherbet over melon; or a sausage, egg, and vegetable bake, served with spiced peaches, rosemary buns, and angel food cake with blueberry sauce. How about pork chops simmered with lemon, brown sugar, and honey, served with egg noodles tossed with butter and poppy seeds, snow peas and asparagus, and a butterscotch pudding layered with shortbread cookies? All the thinking, all the planning, all the organization, has been done for you. All that's left for you to do is to take the credit! Whether you're a single parent, the cooking half of a two-career family, or an overscheduled stay-at-home mom, The Accidental Gourmet: Weeknights is the one book you'll want to use every day.
Customer Reviews:
Clever recipe titles, but lacking in variety.......2005-04-06
Yes, the recipe titles are clever (and make it difficult to find what you're looking for), but many recipes in this book seem to be recycled versions of themselves. For instance, there are MANY (too many) desserts featuring instant pudding, crushed graham crackers/oreos/vanilla wafers, some sort of chip (chocolate, butterscotch), and Cool Whip. The authors want you to make some version of this dessert practically weekly. And don't get me started on the many rice dishes that follow the same kind of formula. A good, basic cookbook, even Betty Crocker, will serve you better than this one.
too hard to follow.......2005-01-21
I'm in the middle on this cookbook, it's great for grouping together a complete meal for each night of the week, recipes are on one page, with preparation steps in logical sequence, grocery shopping list is already prepared and it lays flat so you can easily keep the book open while cooking; all good attributes. HOWEVER, there is no index or table of contents so you can't find a recipe easily, the recipes have stupid names that give no clue as to what you're preparing so you have to read the whole recipe to figure out if it's a soup or salad or an entree. It just depends on if you're a good enough cook to be able to read the recipe and figure out what you're cooking. I liked the cookbook but it's very confusing to follow and find an individual recipe.
The Accidental Bourmet: Weekends and Holidays.......2004-02-17
What a joy! Someone else does the thinking for me. I love to entertain, but I don't have the time to plan. This book takes all the guess work out of my daily life and gives me tons of new things to choose from.
Just great and so easy! A big thank you to this author.
Sincerely,
CarolAnn Durbon
How to Laugh your way through dinner........2003-06-27
I could hardly wait for the new cookbook by the gals that wrote
A Dinner A Day. I come home from work and open their new book and laugh as I prepare one of their complete meals. Sometimes my children get in on the fun and help. This is one great way to get the family together for a meal that doesn't have grease as a main ingredient.
I don't always follow the whole meal, but the idea of what they put together is creative and colorful. Now I have both of their books side by side and the dinner stress is gone with the wind!
Best Cookbook I own.......2003-06-21
This cookbook is terrific. A perfect sequel to A Dinner a Day. I didn't even know it was available until last week when I was in the market and saw a lady with it open in her shopping cart. It's another whole year of new recipes that are so quick, easy, and fun that you won't even realize you're cooking. Now I can shop at my leisure on the weekends, and come home from work during the week and have all new dinners that I know my family will love on the table in no time.

When you think "macrobiotic," do you picture unseasoned brown rice, raw sprouts, and no taste? Abandon the stereotype, because macrobiotic cooking is both varied and tasty, especially with the recipes in this cookbook.
Macrobiotic cooking uses these food groups:
1. 30-50% of the diet is whole grains, the main staple food: brown rice, whole wheat, oats, corn, millet, barley, rye, buckwheat, and foods made with cracked grains and whole grain flour.
2. 30-50% is vegetables, in season and grown locally when possible, and sea vegetables, which store and travel well.
3. 5-15% can be beans, soy foods, or occasional seafood.
4. In moderation: fruits, seeds, nuts.
Author Meredith McCarty is codirector of the East-West Center for Macrobiotics in Eureka, California. She explains the basics of cooking whole grains and soyfoods, and walks us through the use of unfamiliar ingredients such as sea vegetables and grain beverages. Recipes include Stand-Up Cabbage Sushi, Nutty Noodle Bake, Mexican Rice, Journeycakes (American Indian flatbread), Green Corn Tamale Bake, Japanese Cool Noodle Salad, Baked Tempeh with Lemon-Mustard Sauce, and Lemon-Lime Pudding Pie. Far from an austere diet, the recipes are as hearty, ethnically varied, and tasty as they are healthy. --Joan Price

ok, more theory than recipes.......2006-02-23
This book has some interesting recipes and discussion, but it is filled with lots of pictures, theory and concepts. I was only looking for a cookbook, hence the 3 stars.
Informative, not preachy.......2003-01-26
Unlike most cookbooks for vegetarians or health concious folks the American Macrobiotic Cookbook is full of good information, as well as delicious recipes. The illustrations are complimentary to the style of writing and it's an all around good introduction to macrobiotic cooking.
Great information and recipes.......2000-04-28
This book is a great introduction to the various foods that are eaten according to Macrobiotic principles, in plain English. Each of the basic foods is described, along with handling and preparation information. I am looking forward to trying some of the desserts! I was worried that this style of eating would be very limiting and dull but this book dispels that idea with the variety of meals it presents.

Great Book.......2007-02-07
Best. Macro. Book. Ev-arrr!
Seriously. American food. Healthy. Delicious. Try cooking the succotash and yams and squash for *real* traditional Thanksgiving sides.
Every recipe I have tried in here is fantastic.
Except for the Zuni water balls. They stunk.
But don't let that stop you. This book rules. Easy to read, mostly easy to make, good for you, and delicious recipes you can add to your all-american repertoire! w00t!

Book Description
What is "fusion cooking"? It's brushing skewers of beef tenderloin with a traditional Caribbean jerk barbecue sauce; matching spicy Southwest fried chicken with a sunny ginger-apricot sauce; or drizzling watermelon and sweet red onion salad with a raspberry cabernet vinaigrette. In short, fusion cooking means combining ingredients and techniques from around the world to achieve exciting flavors.
Fusion Food Cookbook celebrates the new American cuisine, in which distinctive seasonings and cooking styles from Asia, Mexico, the American Southwest, New Orleans, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean are incorporated into familiar home cooking. Highlighting the vivid flavors of these diverse ethnic and regional traditions, authors Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison define a major trend in American cooking, showing us how to mix and match seasonings and cooking techniques and encouraging us to be more creative in our own cooking.
The 150 flavor-intense recipes in Fusion Food Cookbook require no hard-to-find ingredients or special equipment. More than 100 color photographs by acclaimed food and wine photographer Teri Sandison capture the vivid colors and cross-cultural style of the inspired recipes.
Customer Reviews:
YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!!.......2005-02-21
If you are serious about cooking, and you want the fusion approach, this is THE book to guarantee delicious results. It is easy to follow, and even when you make a small mistake (as I did by using the marinade as the finishing sauce) the results are fabulous. Many say the ingredients are many, and if you don't live by an asian market, impossible to find, and costly: I say baloney (the best Chinese kind!) because I was just in a very small town in Southern Utah, and there was an asian market there! Sources are also available online, so no excuses. In addition, I made a 20 course dinner using these recipes and there was a large amount of prep work. But the actual cooking time was not bad. People were eating each course as I cooked it and the final cost was well below what we would have paid to feed everyone at a chain chinese restaurant. High leads you through step by step and points out the all important 'why' a certain recipe is prepared in a particular way. It's almost as good as having him right there or being in one of his classes. Unless you must cook from mixes, this is a definite plus in any serious cook's repetoire.
500 Stars for this one.......2004-10-23
This book is absolutely fantastic! As other reviewers have noted all the recipes that I have tried are absolutely excellent. I am recently returning to gourmet cooking - as my creative muse has taken me in the direction of computers graphics and animation these last 3 years - and this is the first book I reached for. Last night I made Jade Sauce and Secret Asian BBQ Sauce, and they are assuredly the best things that I have tasted in 3 years!
One reviewer is right - I am lucky to live in an urban area with a large Vietnamese population. I therefore have easy access to Vietnamese grocery stores that carry all the "weird" ingredients. And they carry them for cheap - like a half to a quarter of what the same items would cost in a grocery store (if you found them there at all). Like a quart of sesame oil for $10, 5 pounds of Hoisin Sauce for $5, or a quart of Soy Sauce for $4. And some recipes do include a lot of ingredients - the bbq sauce has 18! If you do have access to an Asian market, the price of these recipes plummet into the everyday cooking budget area. Way cool.
Also seriously cool is the fact that a lot of the recipes revolve around a flavoring sauce that can be made ahead of time (some, like the bbq sauce keep forever in the refrigerator). This makes the actual dinner preparation very simple in some cases.
Overall, this is the best cook book I own - which is way too many! If you want to try something different: BUY THIS BOOK!
Good for Special Occasions.......2002-02-17
This book is comprehensive. It covers so much that I still have not been able to get through a quarter of the recipes even though I've owned this book for about 3 years! The recipes found in this book are enticing because not only are the photographs beautiful but the quirky combination of ingredients is hard to imagine. The few recipes I've tried have been really good but I have one major problem with this book. The ingredients used are not items that you can find in any supermarket. One would have to go to a specialty gourmet store or asian market. So, in order to prepare a meal from this book, you have to go out and buy a whole bunch of ingredients (and believe me the ingredient lists are long!). This is a handy book if you want to prepare something different for guests or for your family on a special occasion but not worth all of the time, money, and effort you would have to put in for an everyday meal.
this is one of the best.......2001-12-30
i did not do 1/10th of the recipes here but i can tell you one thing...my cooking changed dramatically for a while.
i loved the small touches, the photography, the willingness to push the readers a bit further.
a must for wanna-be chefs who want to try out something new.
Fusion Food Cookbook.......2001-09-21
Every recipe that we have tried in the book has been outstanding. The recommended combinations are excellent and always compliment each other very well. It is really easy to prepare a fantastic gourmet meal for dinner parties. This is one of the very best cookbooks we have every owned and we recommend it to all of our friends.

mr. guste makes the cuisine of my home state easy and good for you. the moment i got the book i could start cooking right away. common ingredients and simple preparation are key here. and the nutrition information included with each recipe and menu plan are invaluable if you're watching what you eat. i'm so pleased to own this cookbook, and i know i'll use it many times in the near and distant future.

Great recipes!.......2001-09-16
This is a wonderful recipe book! My husband especially appreciates it, because I am a horrible cook. The recipes are very tasty. I learned how to make a great cole slaw, black eyed peas & chicken! Yum! I recommend this book to everyone!
This chef makes magic with the soul food spice mix.
Skeet, where are you and how are you doing?.......2001-09-14
I have to confess that I have not read the book, but I did order the book today, along with my sister Dorothy & our cousin Teretha. Skeet, I had no idea that you had written so many books. When you came to Clarksdale years ago to research your first book, I had no idea that it would lead to several more. Wilbert Jones or "Skeet" as I know him, lived in Clarksdale, MS for quite some time and later moved up North (as we say in the South)to Chicago (I think). Anyway, Mr. Jones was my neighbor and I would love to hear from him. If there is a way that you can get this to him, I would appreciate it. By the way, this is Ms. Nancy's daughter. I can't wait to get the book.
Outstanding adaptations of traditional "soul food" favorites.......1998-02-26
The book begins with an insightful glimpse into the world of traditional "soul food": its origins and components. Wilbert Jones does a wonderful job of making simple adaptations to create healthy, extremely flavorful, and virtually fat-free recipes of my time-worn favorites. I was introduced to Jones' work in the form of the Black-Eyed Pea Veggie Burger...a flavorful alternative to fast-food albeit not as fast a meal as I initially estimated. Since that introduction, I have prepared his Skillet Corn Bread, Collard Greens, and Red Bean and Rice. Absolutely, positively delicious!!! Even my picky eaters had no problems with "Mom's experiments!!" My only criticism of this cookbook is that it is too short!! I look forward to more of Jones' work in the future!

I am enjoying the recipes in this cookbook for healthier eating even though I'm not a diabetic. They are still flavorful and tasty. I think anyone could benefit from these recipes to have better eating habits.
