5 out of 5 stars Great Guidance.......2007-10-08

This is an excellent source if you are new to eating right for your blood type. Handy food charts identify which foods are beneficial, neutral or bad for your body. Also, there are suggested 30 day menus plans as well as suggestions about exercise plans for each blood type. Advice is practical such as fresh veggies are best but if cannot buy fresh, buy frozen and not canned...recipes are simple and turn out delicious...they range from meats to pasta/pizza, soups, salads, dressings/sauces,frittatas, to snacks, treats and munchies. If you have bought Dr. D'Adamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type", this companion book, "Cook Right For Your Type" is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-12

I am really enjoying this book, its helpful because not everyone in my family has the same blood type. This book is easy to use. My only grip about it is that sometimes on the thirty day meal plans, the recipes are not listed in the book. I also do not like the fact that on the meal plans they do not have the page numbers on where to find the recipes. Other than that I really enjoy the eating right for you type books and highly recommend them to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Eat Right 4 Your Type.......2007-05-26

Intriguing book, very well written, holds your interest. Everything explained so that you can understand it. Borrowed it from a relative and then bought it for myself to refer to and read again. Bought one for my son, too. Am reccommending to people I work with.

5 out of 5 stars blood type diet.......2007-05-13

If you buy into the possibilities, it can be beneficial. Both my husband and I have felt better since trying to follow this. I can't say any real weight loss, but definitely feel much better!

4 out of 5 stars good guide.......2007-04-11

This cookbook gives a lot of ideas for cooking by blood type. I have not read the original book but if i had to choose between the two, this book gives plenty of tools to get started.

Book Description

Every few decades a chef or a teacher writes a cookbook that is so comprehensive and offers such depth of subject matter and cooking inspiration that it becomes a virtual bible for amateur and professional alike. Author James Peterson, who wrote the book Sauces, a James Beard Cookbook of the Year winner, and the incomparable Splendid Soups, once again demonstrates his connoisseurship with Fish & Shellfish, a monumental cookbook that will take its rightful place as the first and last word on seafood preparation and cooking.

Fish & Shellfish demonstrates every conceivable method for preparing sumptuous meals of fish and shellfish, from baking, braising, deep-frying, grilling and broiling to poaching, panfrying, marinating, curing and smoking, steaming, and microwaving. Whether your taste runs strictly to shellfish or to everything seafood, Fish & Shellfish offers the equivalent of a complete cookbook on each subject. Within the chapters on finfish you'll learn how to prepare enticing recipes remarkable for their ease of preparation, their versatility, and their originality Here Peterson offers such splendid flavors and textures as succulent Stuffed Striped Bass with Spinach, Shrimp, and Mushrooms; crunchy Halibut Fillets with Curry, Herbs, and Almond Crust; delicate Salmon Fillets A la Nage with Julienned Vegetables; savory Braised Tuna with Vegetables; and fiery Thai-Style Swordfish Satay.

If it's shellfish you prefer, there are pages and pages of recipes for baking, frying, steaming, or serving raw everything in a shell, including mussels, clams, oysters, scallops, lobster, shrimp, crab, and crayfish. Peterson explains how to judge freshness and how to prepare shellfish delights, including lemony-flavored Steamed Mussels with Thai Green Curry; aromatic Littleneck Clams in Black BeanScented Broth; a simple and comforting Linguine with Clam Sauce; elegant Hot Oysters with Leeks and White Wine Sauce; rich and savory Braised Scallops with Tomatoes and Fresh Basil; Steamed Lobster with Coconut Milk and Thai Spices; Shrimp with Tomato Sauce, Saffron Aioli, and Pesto; hit-the-spot Sautéed Crab Cakes; and Japanese Style Grilled Squid, to name but a few of the brilliant and vast array of wonderful seafood selections.Fish & Shellfishalso offers techniques for preparing raw, marinated, cured, and smoked fish.

As you exploreFish & Shellfish, you'll learn not only the essentials of seafood preparation but everything in between, including how to make a curry sauce, which red wines to cook with, how to fry parsley, and how to make Vietnamese dipping sauces. You'll learn the secrets of a variety of coatings, how to blacken fish, add stuffings, and deglaze the pan for sauces, as well as discover the delights of salsas, chutneys, relishes, mayonnaises, and butters.

Here is seafood in every incarnation, from soups, stews, and pastas to mousses, soufflés, and salads. Try everything from pureed Marseilles-Style Fish Soup and Moroccan Swordfish Tagine with Olives and Saffron to Homemade Cuttlefish-Ink Linguine, and Crayfish Stew with Tomatoes, Sorrel, and Vegetables.

Jim Peterson has traveled the world and brought back the best international seafood flavors, textures, and techniques. Now you can improvise on your own with Thai marinades, Indian spices and condiments, and Japanese grilling methods, all of which play off more familiar ingredients to produce memorable dishes.

At the end of Fish & Shellfish you'll find a complete Finfish Dictionary, where you'll learn all you need to know about more than sixty species of saltwater and freshwater fish. There's also a 32-page section of color photographs that pictures many of the mouthwatering recipes in the book. And the step-by-step pictorials in the color section will show you how to prepare fish and shellfish for cooking.

James Peterson's books have been hailed as the most companionable and dependable of cooking guides. Replete with tables, timing charts, advice about equipment, safety preparations, a glossary of foreign ingredients, and an exhaustive index, Fish & Shellfish will give you the power of flexibility and spontaneity as it transforms you into an accomplished seafood cook. Here is a fundamental cookbook that you will come to depend on every time you think seafood-and now you'll be thinking seafood all the time.

5 out of 5 stars More fish than a market!.......2007-01-15

I got this for a gift for a friend from NJ. He was always complaining about there never being recipes for obtuse fish, shellfish and bi-valves. When he opened this book, he didn't put it down for 2 days. He is STILL raving about it! Kudos!

5 out of 5 stars One Great Reference.......2006-11-14

No more searching through a string of specialty cookbooks for that fresh idea for tonight's dinner. Look no farther.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR THE LOVERS OF THE CRUS(TACEAN) AND HIS FINNY FRIENDS.......2006-11-06

Again, Mr. Peterson sets the standards. This is not just a cookbook. It's an appliance in the kitchen as essential as the refrigerator and the electric or gas stove. Never ruin fish again under this authority's watch.

5 out of 5 stars Yummmmm.......2003-10-24

Fantastic recipes from wildly exotic...I recommend Brazilian Vatapa...to boldly simple. Methods, suggestions, variety, or in a word: Yummmmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A Book Even a Mother Could Love..........2003-03-05

I've made 2 recipes from this cookbook in the past few weeks...Snapper Marinated in Sake and Miso Soup with Shrimp. The Snapper recipe is amazing. Some of the ingredients for these recipes may be hard to find for some people, especially people not in a large metropolitan area, but they are easily found on the internet.

Just describing this recipe to my boyfriends' mother, she made it that same week and her teenage son's friends ate all of it. If young people will eat it, it has to be good...right?

This a really a great cook book and I have tried may recipes in it and they were all great, what is really great you can also watch how it is done when it is aired on TV.

      5 out of 5 stars Cook's Illustrated Test Kitchen.......2006-02-25

Even though I subscribe and have many Cook's Illustrated books this was worth the purchase. Yes, some of the info is repeated from other pubs but often tweaked a little and some new stuff also. A very good read, too!

      5 out of 5 stars Avid Cook.......2005-10-27

I ordered the first volume of the series and was very pleased with my purchase. This is a fine addition to my cookbook collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book but could use a better index.......2005-09-06

This book is OUTSTANDING. America's Test Kitchen is like the Consumer Report's of recipes and cooking products. I enjoy learning WHY certain products and techniques work. They try and try until they get a particular recipe to be the best it can be. Then they share what they learned. The one disappointing aspect of this book is the Table of Contents and indexes. For example each "chapter" contains several recipes, but you have to go to the chapter in order to see what all the recipes are within that chapter. But the book is so very excellent that I can forgive this flaw.

5 out of 5 stars But use your own judgment.......2005-06-07

I absolutely love ATK and buy all of their books. The techniques they present are top notch and as close to bulletproof as you can get. I find the spicing a little mild for my tastes so I usually amp that up a bit. Tasting results are the aggregated opinion of several people so some of the more unusual flavors you might get a kick out of may be rounded out in the math.

You can do a lot of things to improve your health, but none is more important than good nutrition, and none will do much good without it. In the face of massive confusion over conflicting claims about the nutritional value of different foods currently on the market, this book is an invaluable and detailed guide to natural foods that answers a lot of questions for newcomers and old hats, too. It is a perfect companion to your cookbooks, and ought to be required reading for restaurant chefs everywhere. No mere collection of dry nutritional information, Whole Foods Companion also goes into the origins and naming of different foods and explains some of the legends and traditions with which they have been associated. Dianne Onstad explains in great depth the benefits of eating whole foods. After reading this book, you won't look at commercially canned vegetables without thinking of what you're missing by eating them instead of real food.

      Book Description

Originally published in 1996, Whole Foods Companion has become the definitive resource guide to the rapidly expanding world of whole foods. This revised and expanded edition updates key nutritional information in six categories:

In the face of staggering confusion and conflicting claims about the nutritional value of different foods and herbs, this book is a detailed and invaluable guide to natural foods. It is a perfect companion to cookbooks and should be required reading for chefs everywhere. No mere collection of dry nutritional information, Whole Foods Companion also explains the origins and naming of different foods and relays some of the legends and traditions with which they have been associated.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing resource!.......2006-10-17

This is my food "bible". I find it facinating enough to read like a novel from cover to cover. The layout and organization of the book makes it an invaluable reference book when you want to know about a particular foods nutritional information & health benefits, history or general culinary uses. I love the 'Legends & Lore' sections as well. I refer to this book almost daily and have had fun at dinner parties sharing information about where foods come from. For anyone who is interested in learning more about the food they put into their bodies, this book is incredible. I have both versions, but the revised and expanded edition is the one to buy-more info and more foods.

5 out of 5 stars The Authoritative Guide for Lovers of Natural Foods.......2006-09-05

This is a wonderful book! It is authoritative, detailed, well written, and extremely entertaining.

Author Dianne Onstad writes with an insight and understanding of all aspects of whole foods that is simply mind boggling. "Whole Foods Companion" is intended for those interested in eating well, eating better, or simply knowing the benefits of the many fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts-seeds-oils, and herbs and spices that are available to enrich and prolong their lives.

Each is described in detail, including nutritional value, general information, culinary tips and health benefits. Also listed for many of the whole foods is their lore and legend and buying tips for how to purchase them at their best.

Yes, there is more information in this humorous book than the average person will probably ever use, but that should not detract from its value as the best reference available of its kind.

      5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-02-06

If you are confused about the world of whole foods and want more information, the new revised and expanded Whole Foods Companion is a great place to start.

The book is organized like an encyclopedia and lists information for more than 400 different plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, oils, herbs, spices, and more.

Each entry in the book includes information about the plant's origin, buying tips, culinary uses, and health benefits. Sidebars scattered throughout the book offer lore, legends, and other fun facts. For example, The Egyptians served lentils liberally to children because it was believed that they enlightened their minds, opened their hearts, and made them cheerful. The Greeks and Romans used asparagus to relieve the pain of toothaches and to prevent bee stings.

Of course, there's more relevant information as well, like "Raw broccoli contains almost as much calcium as whole milk and is linked to lowering the risk of cancer" and "Exceedingly nutritious, it [millet] contains an abundance of minerals and vitamins, and the most complete protein of any of the true cereal grains."

Even if you are not a newcomer to whole foods, this book can be useful as well as interesting. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about whole foods but I still refer to this book often and have learned from it. This is a great reference and would be a helpful addition to the whole foods kitchen.

Review from www.vegfamily.com by Cathe Olson

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-05-01

"Whole Foods Companion" is a wonderful resource about foods from the earth. The author, Dianne Onstad, brings us more information in this revised and expanded edition based on her 1994 success!

Dianne Onstad is involved in nutrition education, as well as in the promotion of organic whole foods. She even has a special interest in living and raw foods.

In this impressive reference book, you will find information such as: Buying Tips, Culinary Uses, Health Benefits, Lore and Legend, and General Information on Fruits; Vegetables; Grains; Legumes; Nuts, Seeds and Oils; and Herbs, Spices and Other Foods. There is also a glossary and an extremely comprehensive index.

Despite not having any photographs, this book is quite extensive and thorough. I tried to find obscure items within this text, such as loquats, and I actually did find them. I, also, tried to find some misinformation, such as health information, and was unable to do so. Onstad has done an excellent job once again!

In today's world where everything is prepackaged, I find books such as "Whole Foods Companion" to be a welcome and refreshing change to becoming a healthier eater.

For anyone interested in understanding more about their food, how to select it, cook it and what health benefits it provides, then this is a fantastic food reference book of encyclopedic proportions!

5 out of 5 stars Don't go to Napa without this book!.......2007-05-31

Have been to Napa many times - but was unaware of the many gems this book uncovers - an incredible and fun resource for the food and wine lover! I will be seeking out these finds in the future! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of Napa.......2005-08-16

This book covers all the areas I was interested in learning about before our trip to Napa Valley. The reviews seem unbiased and thoughtful. We had visited Napa 18 years ago and while we already had a few ideas, reservations, etc., this guide gave us even more places to consider. I've "earmarked" so many pages and even took this guide with us. It also includes maps, addresses and phone numbers and/or websites. Some good recipes are in the back. A good companion guide.

5 out of 5 stars a great resource, even for locals..........2003-04-24

As a regular visitor to the Napa Valley for the past 10 years, it's easy to think that one has 'seen it all.'

This book really reminded me what a special place the Napa Valley is, and how much there is to discover. Visitors and locals alike will find something new and interesting that they simply must try.

Take this book with you to the Valley, or read it before you go and find your new 'must try' discovery.

5 out of 5 stars Fun in the wine country.......2003-03-26

This is a must have for anyone visiting or living in the Napa Valley. Well organized and cleverly composed. I found it most useful for locating the rare-to-find places and foods that make the Napa Valley so unique. It makes a great gift for all the food lovers in your life.

          Book Description

The Camp Cook's Companion offers a savory alternative to the bland, just-add-water fare to which most outdoor types resort after a long day in the woods. Acclaimed outdoor writer Alan Kesselheim serves up a delightfully varied menu of more than 150 recipes, made from both fresh and dehydrated ingredients. Proving one needn't sacrifice flavor for utility, Kesselheim describes easy-to-prepare recipes for everything from French toast to Basil Wrathboned chicken. He also offers the choice of a number of preparation methods from simple one-pan offerings to creative Dutch oven repasts and baked goods.
