Book Description

Tradition meets the 21st century in this hip and colorful cookbook that shows that Soul Food doesn't have to be "country food."

In Delilah's Everyday Soul, chef Delilah Winder shares the Southern-inspired recipes that helped earn her the devotion of many, including television's Oprah Winfrey, the NFL's Donovan McNabb, and music's Patti LaBelle. Sharing more than 100 of her favorite recipes and the stories behind them, Delilah reaches back to her roots and forward to future generations of soul food lovers with her fun, eclectic recipes.

For Delilah, Southern food comes from the heart and touches the soul. The recipes in Delilah's Everyday Soul are arranged by occasion and accented with special memories, tips, and suggestions for preparing and serving. They feature traditional soul food like Delilah's delectable fried chicken and strawberry lemonade, and also include more modern renditions of the fare, plus alternative ingredients for those who want to try healthier versions of the spectacular recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmm Good.......2007-09-15

This is one of the many cookbooks I own, but I must say Deliah's book is easy to follow and she has the best macarroni& cheese receipe that I ever tasted. If you like soulfood this is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Missing a step.......2007-09-02

The "famous" macaroni and cheese recipe is missing a step, but it can be figured out easily enough. Seems like a nice cookbook but I haven't tried all the recipes yet. There is a bit of extra "fluff" between recipes. Pleasant book in any case.

5 out of 5 stars ohhhhhhh Delilah!.......2007-07-24

I bought this book thinking it was just a cookbook but I was sure delighted when I opened it up and read it cover to cover. Deliah shares about how she got her love for entertaining and using fine china, and how she learned from her grandmother how to set a nice, inviting table. I tried two of the recipes so far and they were not hard at all and boy, were they so flavorful! Delilah also gives great tips in this book. This cookbook will be used often.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Soul.......2007-07-24

I really like this book! And I love her personality! A lot of the recipes DEFINITELY cannot be eaten everyday, but she has some wonderful recipes and stories as well. In the South, there is a story about everything, and Delilah Winder has definitely captured the essence of southern living in her cookbook. If you love "southern" living, then you will love this cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars A good cookbook that's also entertaining to read........2007-07-10

If you want to learn more about southern cooking then this is the right book for you. It includes almost all the recipes that the South is famous for and the author, whose passion for cooking is contagious, does a good job presenting the different recipes with entertaining anecdotes of her own.
However, if you are looking for some healthy and quick recipes then maybe you should get a different cookbook. The author doesn't give any calorie counts or preparation times. What she does give you are some delicious and sometimes indulgent recipes. This book was clearly written for the love of food not to watch your waistline.

My only complaint is that some of the recipes didn't seem to have the right measures. For example the famous Maccaroni and Cheese Recipe(which btw won an award on the Oprah Show) called for one 9x13 pan and states that it serves 6-8 people. Well, when I made it, I came out with THREE 9x 13 pans of maccaroni and cheese which I ended up giving away to friends and family. But everybody confirmed that it was the best Mac and Cheese ever! So just use some common sense when you look at the amount of ingredients versus the serving size.

Book Description

“Soul food is just what the name implies. It is soulfully cooked food . . . good for your ever-loving soul . . . the shur-‘nuf kinda down-home cookin’ that I grew up on,” writes Sheila Ferguson. Abundant in flavor and variety—ranging from classics such as barbecued spare ribs, fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens to less well known but equally sumptuous recipes such as sweet potato biscuits, grits soufflé, and wild fox grape wine—soul food is a truly American cuisine, originated in the deep South by slaves and later shaped and expanded by the rich diversity of African-American culture.

5 out of 5 stars SouLovely.......2007-07-20

A delightful book full of delicious recipes with clear instructions, family histories and a whole new vocabulary of odd expressions and descriptions of food. I also bought the more famous "Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook" (Sylvia has a famous restaurant in New York), but I actually prefer this one slightly more, although both are absolutely wonderful. Sylvia's book is larger, more colourful and has more photos than this unassuming book by Sheila Ferguson, but the recipes for both books are just as mouth-watering; Sheila's book has a delicious recipe for "Red Devil's Food Cake" and Sylvia has a similar one called "Red Velvet Cake", for example. It's just that "Soul Food" by Ms. Ferguson has a few more unusual and unknown recipes in it, like her recipe for "Fergy's Fried Chicken". Most of the recipes look delicious and it all depends on the skill of the cook attempting these gems I guess, but I think both books are great references on this style of cooking and both are equally perfect. I would just be more likely to give Sylvia's cookbook as a gift because it is more elegant and I'd probably keep "Soul Food" for myself. No, come to think of it, I'd keep both.

5 out of 5 stars great cookbook.......2007-05-06

I really enjoyed reading the stories along with some really great old southern recipes

4 out of 5 stars Nothing to add to any recipe.......2006-09-13

The southern recipes are accurate to a fault. This is authentic soul food cuisine. I have found that sometimes I have had to reduce some of the richer ingredients for a "healthier" meal. This is the first cook book I have used that you can just follow the recipe and you do not have to add a thing. The flavoring is just right!

4 out of 5 stars If you love southern food, you need this cookbook.......2006-03-30

I purchased this book years ago and recently misplaced it and just ordered another copy. I enjoy the recipes, the short stories... it's good reading and the recipes are very good. Brings back memories from the south.

This is an excellent resource for the novice.

I do not have a lot of time to read a lot of recipes just to get a good soul meal but this book is truly God sent.

If you need a meal without all of the fuss this book is for you.

2 out of 5 stars Not scratch enough........2005-09-12

The book is misleading as a lot of the stuff she uses to make her food I don't consider to be scratch. I was disappointed in the book although some of it was good.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite there yet..........2005-07-29

As one who cannot resist any cookbook reminiscent of a nostalgic trip back to Grandma's kitchen - any Grandma - and any ethnicity, I had to get this book. While there are plenty of the old-fashioned recipes you would expect, the complete lack of pictures is disappointing.

The layout and style is of the fund raising type you find at your local church group or club, which is fine, but I'm spoiled enough these days by newer technologies to want pictures of the finished recipes.

I purchased this book for my nephew's first New Year's Day gift last year. The subject matter was perfect. In our family (ex-southerners) we always serve up a BIG, traditional Southern meal on New Year's Day. All of the foods depicted in this book are familiar to us. From okra and hush puppies to cornbread and 'nana pudding. What a great idea for a toddler book, and the paper collage/fiber art is pretty good too. A great way to introduce your little one to Southern cuisine and culture.

5 out of 5 stars great addition to the series.......2004-04-05

After being a little disappointed with Yum Yum Dim Sum, I was so happy to read through A Little Bit of Soul Food. My kids love it too. We just moved to the South from California....the sushi and Mexican food depicted in Sanger's earlier books were familiar to us and we enjoyed reading about our favorite foods. Now we have another book of familiar yummy foods to read about!

The backgrounds are inspired by Gee's Bend quilts, a treat for the fiber-art lovers out there.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable and easy to use!.......2005-03-15

When I got my first apartment, I bought The Joy Of Cooking, thinking I could make as much of a mess in the kitchen as I wanted without worrying about a roommate seeing it. All I wanted to do at first was make a good beef stew (my own trials were OK, but nothing I'd share with anyone). Well, in The Joy Of Cooking, the task was comparable to building a nuclear power plant from scratch. Fortunately, I got this book for Christmas that year (2 months later) and have since made all sorts of dishes I wouldn't dare to try with the recipes from that "other" book. Beef strognoff - fewer than 10 ingredients. Mac and cheese - 6 ingredients. Cheesecake - 4 ingredients. And they all taste great! I'd give this book 10 stars if it were possible.

4 out of 5 stars More, please!.......2003-10-31

Martha Storey (and Friends) certainly did put together an amazing cookbook here. The recipes are authentic and having made a number of them already, I might add quite delicious. (I particularly enjoyed the Johnny Appleseed Cake). Believe it or not it even has a great number of techniques and tools for making your own cheese, cured and smoked meats, root beer, real beer, wine, and even liquors. I was simply blown away by the amount of information given in this tome of the country kitchen.

I have to say, though, I was at times disappointed with the amount of recipes in the book. It seems to spend so much time on the quantity of genres and ingredients, that I felt it lost a little on the quantity of each individual section. For example, I believe there could have been more than the paltry sum of beef or chicken recipes, not to mention the soup section, which while divided up nicely into different categories really could have spent more time on soup as a whole and incorporated more authentic country dishes. I also felt one or two of the entrees were not quite that 'country' or authentic for that matter.

Still, on the whole, I would have to say that 90% of the book is authentic and country. The techniques for making your own country foods is alone worth the buy. Maybe you will find that the quantity of courses and genres therein makes up for the mere 2 pages some of them are treated with. In which case, ignore my 4 stars and give it 5 of your own. I'm sure whether or not you agree with my one star difference, you will enjoy it just as much as I do on a constant basis. I still use it all the time and find it a constant go-to in my kitchen. I know you will agree.

5 out of 5 stars Country Cooking for Dummies ;).......2003-08-06

This is a must have recipe book for anyone who has even the slightest inclination towards cooking. The recipes are easy to follow, easy to make, and absolutely scrumptious! Ms. Storey explains everything from cooking utensils to cooking techniques- this is one treasure of a recipe book ;)

5 out of 5 stars Historical, Hometown, Delightful Recipes.......2001-07-19

Absolutely fabulous. The first section on kitchen know-how walks you through measurements, terms, and techniques with handy reference charts. Next you'll enter the basic and well-stocked kitchen with great ideas for the novice and pro. An endearing section called Grandma's Gadgets follows with items from pea shellers to pickle forks.

Pantry staples with detailed items and storage suggestions along with a quaint glance at her "company pantry" chock full of home made goodies.

The recipes stem from old-fashioned to modern and everything in between. Martha will make your mouth water with recipes for Greek Omelette's, Orange French Toast, Waffles and Crepe's, Blueberry Cinnamon Doughnuts, and Fritters in the breakfast category.

Meal ideas and recipes are available from Hummus to Pumpkin Tempura and everything in between.

In need of a yummy dessert? Search through page after page with possibilities of Swiss Braided Bread, Soft Pretzels, Ginger Scones, Johnny Appleseed Cake and so much more.

Learn about jam's and jellies, sausage making, proper freezing methods, gift ideas and a bit of history all with a delightful country living feeling.

A wonderful addition to any baker or cooks shelf.

This is the best book on southern cooking I've ever found. It doesn't need the first part of the title. "The Heart and Soul of Southern Country Kitchens",is however, quite appropriate. These are the foods I grew up with and have missed for years. Thanks to Ronni Lundy's book I've found them again.

5 out of 5 stars The best ever on "real food".......2006-03-02

This cookbook is an absolute delight to read and to use. I grew up on this food in Louisville, KY. My Dad was a city boy and a firefighter and my Mom was a country girl. We lived on a combination of firehouse/country food and there is no more delicious combination of cuisine. Like a prior reviewer, the excerpt about the Cozy Theatre and the Suburban Fish Fry brought back some powerful memories. That fish was the best I have ever had. Ronni Lundy's book is the epitome of real regional food.

5 out of 5 stars mouth watering .......2005-12-06

Ronni Lundy knows southern comfort foods and like any good southerner has a story that goes with it. Her creamed corn, biscuits, pies, and well any dish in this book are wonderful because it is the honest to goodness recipe handed down from generation to generation. I really like her writing style as she shares some good meals and profiles compassionate people. This book will make your mouth water and wish that you were sitting at her table.

This cookbook has been a staple of mine for more than 10 years now. While I rarely use it on a daily basis, whenever I have a special occasion, this is where I turn. From taking Dixie Caviar to work to fixing Pork Chops with Browned Garlic Butter Sauce for Mother's Day to baking Jalapeno Cheese Grits for Christmas breakfast, this cookbook always has something for me. And the personal stories that acompany many of the recipes are a delight to read. A truly wonderful addition to any cookbook collection and a great gift for others.

5 out of 5 stars Every recipe is outstanding.......2000-05-09

Each recipe we've prepared from this book has been superb--easy to make and delicious! I wish there were more in a series to cover other international cuisines.

5 out of 5 stars Am proud to be from Memphis with a cookbook like this.......1999-06-09

My husband is the main cook of our family, but I do try to cook sometimes - I am one that has to have a recipe, and that has to look at several before deciding what to cook. Both of us love this cookbook. It is one of our top 2 (The other is Gracious Goodness, which also happens to have originated in Memphis, put out by the Memphis Symphony.) All of the recipes we've tried have been great, and we frequently get asked for the recipe, especially for the prociutto wrapped asparagas, and I don't really even like plain asparagas but these are a treat! We bought a half dozen of these to give as gifts. The salads I've tried have also been great. Anyone who likes to cook would love this pretty and classy Southern book.

5 out of 5 stars This is my all-time favorite cookbook........1998-09-03

Of the many cookbooks I own, this is my very favorite. I have given it as a gift several times, and everyone I know who owns it agrees that it is great! The recipes are wonderful and most are relatively simple: common, easy-to-find ingredients, reasonably quick preparation, and things that just sound good! I entertain frequently, and this is the first book I go to for ideas. I've often been asked for recipes taken from this book. Additionally, the presentation of the book is pretty and fun--delightful stories and good cooking tips, along with lovely photos. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys cooking or seeks a gift for someone who does. You won't be disapppointed!

Book Description

From Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church, one of the most esteemed centers of African American spirituality in the country, comes Food for the Soul–a compilation of more than one hundred recipes, and the many stories behind them shared by its congregation. Since its founding in 1808, Abyssinian has been a major social and religious voice of black Americans. The oldest African American church in New York State, it is a cultural melting-pot ministry with members from throughout the African diaspora–and a history of cooking reflecting that diversity.

Yet beyond the great recipes for dishes such as Bahamian Seafood Cobbler, Soulful Chicken Stir-Fry, Whipping Cream Biscuits, and Mama Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie lies a rich and textured account of how the church incorporates the creation and enjoyment of food and the care of the physical body into its love for and devotion to God and humankind. Brimming with updated, healthy renditions of favorite old dishes, Food for the Soul is also illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs.

Woven through the book are stories associated with the recipes that are full of life–humorous, moving, joyful. From a churchgoer who started making spicy chili in the sixties as the South Bronx burned (Chef J’s 5-Alarm South Bronx Chili) to another who still re-creates the one-pot dinner that was the only meat dish her large and poor family could afford each week (Booba’s Saturday Night Special One-Pot Meal), these anecdotes and recipes come from the heart and provide deep sustenance to the body and soul.

The Abyssinian Baptist Church is the second oldest African American church in the United States and will celebrate its two hundredth anniversary in 2008. Abyssinian has members from Kenya, Jamaica, the United States, Ireland, Brazil, the Cameroon, Uganda, Ghana, the Bahamas, Cuba, Honduras, Panama, England, Egypt, South Africa, Grenada, Trinidad, Holland, Japan, and Nigeria.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Enjoyable.......2007-03-30

Inspired by their senior pastor's warning that "far too many black people are digging their graves with their teeth," the congregation of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, one of the oldest African-American churches in the country, has pulled together a slew of delectable recipes that will give new meaning to the words "soul food." With contributions from renowned restaurants like Sylvia's, Londel's and Brian Washington-Palmer's Native, "Food for the Soul" also entertains with stories about the church serving the local community.

A beautiful book that is both inspirational and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Don't miss this one!.......2005-10-14

I *love* this cookbook. It is gorgeous (with many full color photos), and the recipes are clearly written to ensure success. This is a famous Harlem church, and contains many wonderful stories and anecdotes. But be assured that the book will appeal to anyone with taste buds, regardless of race. (I'm caucasian, and love it).

There are many recipes from Carole Darden Lloyd, whose wonderful Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. And you'll find recipes from names you'll recognize and admire, as well as those you won't know, but who are sensational cooks generously sharing their treasured dishes. Most contributors described why their recipes are so wonderful -- and the church carefully tested them.

Don't miss this one! It is truly outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Love these recipes!.......2004-01-08

These recipes are low fat and low calorie but extremely YUMMY! I happened to catch the author, Stacey Pardue, on TV in Monroe, Louisiana while there on business. She made a glorious looking low fat Mexican dish, so I rushed out an order for her book. The Low Fat Taco Soup Recipe on page 79 is only 125 calories per cup and 1 cup is completely filling for a complete meal. Even my husband likes her low fat recipes! After fixing the low fat taco soup for friends, they ordered this book too! Stacey has taken many of the Southern recipes that I remember my mamma making and make the low fat substitutions for me. I never knew low fat could taste so good!
