5 out of 5 stars Dynamite!.......2007-10-05

I am new to the whole prepping dinner ahead philosphy but I am a believer with this cookbook!

The recipes we have tried are great whether you make them right away or freeze them. My husband is super picky and it got his seal of approval.

Our personal favorite is the Chicken Parisienne, we have made it over and over again. There is always at least one batch in the freezer so it can be thrown in the crockpot in the morning and we have a delicious meal without the fuss!

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes but expected less cooking up front.......2007-09-22

I bought this book because I wanted to mimic the recipes used by Dream Dinners and other make-ahead and freeze recipes. I expected to assemble raw ingredients for freezing and instructions on how to cook at a later time. This book is more about how to cook recipes in their entirety, and then freeze for later consumption.

5 out of 5 stars Life Saver.......2007-09-16

I have a deployed spouse and two young children. I love this book. I can cook whenever I get a chance and then freeze into small portions. I would recommend a cooking co-op with friends. Double or triple the batch and then do a meal swap. For instance if I had three friends and tripled the recipe then we swap and now I have three different meals from the one that I made. This also has a great section for appetizers if your hosting a party, a section for drinks you can make ahead such as frozen punches, teas etc. It is worth any price!!!!

5 out of 5 stars recipes are delicious.......2007-09-03

I've cooked a few of the recipes from this book and they have turned out so much better than expected!! This is by far the best freezer cookbook I have ever used...not your average recipes that you will find in some freezer cookbooks. Great tips for freezing. Fantastic book for any busy mom. I first borrowed it from our local library, and I just purchased one for my own today.
The chicken tortilla soup, and the barb-b-q chicken pizza were excellent!

4 out of 5 stars A fun surprise.......2007-08-25

A friend reveiwed a similar book Dream Dinners: Turn Dinnertime into Family Time with 100 Assemble-and-Freeze Meals and as I read those reviews here on amazon, I came across this book. It was a pleasant suprise. The freezing tips were great, although I had heard of some, it was nice to have some more. It if full of great recipes too - Our family is enjoying this book!

1 out of 5 stars Recipes are bland.......2007-09-01

I own this book and the recipes are bland. Most have salt and pepper as the main seasoning. This book also lacks continuity. What i mean is that each recipe seems to have a unique ingredient. So i cant just stock up on basics and prepare several meals from that. Each time i go to prepare a meal there is some new ingredient which i dont have and now have to buy.

Also some of the recipes arent "extremely low carb". One recipe was 10 effective carbs (ie. net carbs) per small serving and about 25 carbs total. My normal portion size was like 40 net carbs!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2007-05-08

Those who gave this a good review must not have tried any of the recipes.

The book title says extreme lo-carb meals on the go. It is none of these things.

A lot of the recipes contain low carb breads, pastas and tortillas which is fine if you have no weight to lose.

The book promises fast recipes but tells you in the introduction that to the author fast means that the recipes can be cooked in less than an hour. Many of the recipes require that you prep ingredients in advance, the author calls "make ahead".

Many of the recipes call for expensive, hard to find substitutions for sugar, wheat, and syrups.

The only good recipes in the book, which were few and far between, I already had from free, online, low carb sites. (I saw two recipes out of the whole book that I would try and already had seen them online.)

A huge disappointment and I was very excited by the reveiws given so I thought this would be a good resource for me.

Save your money. Search online for the same recipes without the expensive ingredient substitutes.

    Book Description

    "What's for dinner?"

If the sound of those three words sends you reeling or, worse, straight to the nearest fast-food chain or take-out joint, then relax. Dream Dinners will change all that forever.

With their new cookbook, Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna, founders of Dream Dinners, bring the successful philosophy behind their hundreds of assemble-and-freeze-meal stores across America into home kitchens. Dream Dinners offers up one hundred recipes for flavorful meals made with easy-to-find ingredients.

The premise is simple: Scoop or pour ingredients into baking pans or plastic bags, then store the uncooked dishes in the freezer. Later in the week or month, when dinnertime rolls around, just pop one of the frozen meals into the oven. Each recipe is provided two ways: One, prepare just one meal for the night, or two, prepare enough for three meals and freeze the other two. Dinner after sports practice, music lessons, and play rehearsals has never been easier!

In addition to recipes for hearty, family-pleasing classics such as Baked Pesto Ravioli with Chicken, Beef and Zucchini Casserole, and Cider-Braised Pork Loin Chops, Stephanie and Tina give a wealth of time-saving shopping tips and cooking pointers. More than for convenience, eating dinner together provides benefits for the whole family. Study after study shows that mealtime matters. Families who dine together form stronger bonds, and kids get better grades and develop lifelong healthful eating habits. Dream Dinners makes it easy for families to gather around the dinner table and share the ups and downs of the day.

With Dream Dinners, you will spend less time stressing in the kitchen and more time connecting with family and friends.

    1 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2007-09-27

I purchased this cookbook hoping it would have some of their wonderful recipes offered at any Dream Dinner location. I was sadly mistaken. These recipes seem to be old family favorites, and not the delicious meals created by the expert Chef's at Dream Dinners. I did however, find 5-10 recipes that I will try. You've probably seen most of the recipes in here, only they put their own little twist on it. Overall, its not a horrible cookbook, just not what I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Good, could be better.......2007-08-25

I overall like the book. I thought it could have been better. It seems they are trying to come off as more gourmet, not as family friendly. But it has a well-deserved spot on my shelf.

    1 out of 5 stars I just wasted a lot of money..........2007-08-17

I am pretty upset. I just ordered a brand new cookbook, followed the recipe for a triple batch of the artichoke chicken casserole (which was about $50 worth of supplies. I knew better...I knew there was no way that 1 1/2 cups of uncooked rice would be able to reconstitute with the amount of liquid in the sauce. But, I trusted the book. What a disaster. I am about to call Papa John's. Here is the corrected cookbook (sorry, I didn't think to check for corrections since I just bought the book).

Woops, there are 45 PAGES OF CORRECTIONS!!!! Seriously? How did this book make it through to publishing? Whoever edited it should be fired. If you go to the dream dinners website there is a link with all of the corrections.

    5 out of 5 stars A Working Mom's Best Friend.......2007-06-24

Dinner preparation has never been faster nor easier than it became after I purchased this cookbook. I'm able to have dinner on the table in minutes, and they are healthful -- no weird preservatives or artificial junk that my family doesn't need to eat.

Here's what I do: I use a grocery delivery service. When I place my order online, I have my Dream Dinners cookbook in front of me. Based on what meats are on sale, I choose a beef, a pork and a chicken recipe (sometimes I substitute a pasta, turkey or other meal). I then add the ingredients I will need to make 3 of each recipe. It's usually just another $60 or so on my order. When the order arrives, I take two hours or so to put all of my dinners together. At the end, I have about 12 dinners to stack and freeze in my freezer. TWO HOURS to make 12 dinners -- miraculous!

Some of my family's favorites -- Pork Tenderloin with Pears, New England Pot Roast. Happy assemble-and-freezing!

    4 out of 5 stars Bravo! A Great Resource.......2007-03-29

Busy mothers, rejoice. Dinner is served - or almost, anyway. Using the innovative assemble-and-freeze method developed by the founders of the Dream Dinners stores around the country, even the busiest of cooks can learn how to pour ingredients into plastic bags and freeze them, then cook as needed. Whether for breakfast, dinner, parties or dessert, just a few hours in the kitchen will yield weeks of hassle-free meals.

I would have liked to see more photos and graphics (they're always appreciated with cookbooks), but still, this is a fantastic resource. Bravo!

3 out of 5 stars Too Many Errors, But The Recipes Are Great! .......2007-10-11

I made my first set of meals a couple weeks ago, and I've really enjoyed the benefits of this cooking method. However, I had a lot of trouble with the cookbook. Like a previous poster, there were so many errors in this cookbook. One of the recipes was missing an entire part of the recipe's directions, and I had to improvise. Also, I realized quite quickly that I needed to actually sit down and read every single recipe to make sure that all the ingredients and prep work processes had been recorded properly, because there were many errors there too. Most of the recipes have turned out great, but this book would be so much better if someone had just taken the time to really proof read everything. I plan to make another set of meals in two weeks from now, and I'm definitely going to use the recipes, but make the shopping lists myself, and read all the recipes to carefully record all the prep work involved, plus make sure I'm not going to be stuck with a half-missing recipe!!!

3 out of 5 stars Nice recipes, but lots of errors!.......2007-09-28

The concept of this book is great, and the recipes are pretty good. However, in cooking up the recipes for Two-Week Entree Plan B, I discovered a great number of errors: there are several items listed that aren't used (one can chiles, one can pinto beans, a sirloin steak, french bread, etc.) as well as needed ingredients that aren't listed (jalapeno pepper, Italian seasoning, LOTS of soy sauce). Also, the recipe for Chicken Cacciatore is missing the directions for cooking the sauce. I am disappointed that these major errors made it to the final printing. Note: I did not find these kinds of errors in the Two-Week Entree Plan A, and the meals were very tasty.

5 out of 5 stars Good practical recipes - you must plan grocery shopping.......2007-09-23

This book was recommended to me by a coworker. She had used it to help her newly-wed daughter cook despite a low budget and both working. It has been helpful to me as well. You do have to plan your grocery shopping, but if you do, you can save money and have really good meals.

    1 out of 5 stars No Proof.......2007-09-01

This is the second time I have used this book. I chose to do the two-week plan instead of the monthly plan both times. I will say that my family has enjoyed all of the meals, but the book has so many errors it made all the work completely frustrating. You do all of your grocery shopping according to the list, but when it is time for cooking day you will have an extra steak, not enough onions, extra French bread loaf, etc. The list will say you need a certain amount of cooked chicken and certain amount of raw only to find out the amounts were wrong and you end up with too much of one and not enough of the other. I think this would be a great book if it would have been proofed properly. This kind of book just cannot have that many errors. Shame on you for publishing this without proofing!

4 out of 5 stars Exhausting, but worth it!!.......2007-05-20

This is such a great book. The author does ALL the organizing for you, so all you have to do is get plenty of rest the night before the big cooking day! It all pays off in huge time dividends throughout the ensuing month, when dinner is a matter of several choices that are ALREADY MADE! I loved it!! This book would've gotten a 5-star rating if it had a spiral binding like the older version. It was MUCH easier to keep open throughout the day of cooking. Still, I have given this book as a gift and the recipient loved it too.

    5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook!!.......2007-09-15

This cookbook is great. The recipes are good...simple, everyday ingredients and not hard to cook. I made 30 meals and so far they have all been good. I even pass on the 10 recipes I tried to some girlfriends and they all ordered the book. This book has simplified dinner time for me. As a full time student and working part time I don't have time to make dinner, but now we are eating home cooked meals 5 days a week!

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Friendly Meals!!!.......2007-09-12

My friend and I traded 12 different meals using this cook book and we LOVE IT! They have all been hits! She cooked double batches of 6 recipes and I did the same and then we swapped. I highly reccommend this book for families who want home cooked meals the whole family can enjoy!! We did this before my 3rd kiddo was born and the meals have been a lifesaver!

    5 out of 5 stars Good recipes.......2007-08-31

I have not tried all the recipes, but the Chicken Black Bean Chili is remarkable. I did add 2 tablespoons Cumin to the original, but it os wonderful both ways. I recommend the book to all who cook ahead of time.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of it's kind that I've found yet........2007-08-30

I've tried the Wilson & Lagerborg OAMC book, but that one wasn't what I was hoping for. While the recipes in that one are frugal, they're all too similar. I then tried a weekly cooking book by Theresa Albert, and that too was not what I was looking for. When I say a week, I mean seven days. When they say a week, they only mean five. Well I can plan that myself, thank you. Frustrated, I began checking out books from the library and of them all, this book is THE book. The tips alone are worth the purchase. There's a handy equivalents chart (ex: 1 whole chicken = 3-4 cups cubed meat), recipes for seasoning mixes (ex: spaghetti, onion soup, etc.), an easy planning method and plenty of recipes to choose from. The ingredients in the recipes have the standard amounts for a typical dinner, but just below that there are amounts to triple it, so you never need to do it yourself! The idea is to pick out ten meals, triple them and you have your monthly menu. I like that so much better. I currently have the library book, but I just ordered me a copy so that I can have my very own. I can't WAIT to get it!

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-08-15

Almost all of the meals in this book are unhealthy (too much fat and refined carbs, too little vegetables and lean meat). In truth I knew they would be so from a previous review, but I thought I would at least learn freezing technique, but the introductory section is very short and very disappointing. This book is mostly recipes and thus unsuitable for me.

    4 out of 5 stars Wrong Book.......2007-06-08

I ordered the book that is associated with this review. However, when the book arrived, it had a different cover and didn't have the same recipes as I'd anticipated. I had originally checked the book out from my local library prior to deciding on purchasing it. Although the format is the same, I am somewhat disappointed that I didn't receive what I'd actually ordered. I didn't send it back due to the book container other good recipes.

If you have any of the prior published versions, there is nothing new in this current one that justifies the purchase.

This is a very practical guide for big-batch cooking. I learned a lot of helpful techniques and the recipes were practical and intice my trying them. It gave lots of guides for shopping and organizing your cooking day.

5 out of 5 stars Love it !!!.......2007-02-15

I love this cookbook. I love the idea of cooking once a month. I did this before when my children were young and scaled it down to once a week at first. Then worked my way up to once a month. The recipes are easy to follow. You can work your own recipes into the cooking day and now that my daughters are grown and married I decided to get a new copy for myself and one for each of them. Cook everything in one day, and take a great meal out of the freezer every day for a month! What could be better than shopping once and having meals for 31 days? You can't beat this idea.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute time saver!.......2007-01-22

I have used this cookbook for over 20 years, and absolutely love it! When I don't have time to cook, I have something in the freezer that beats fast food. It helped me survive baseball season, dance, soccer, and all the kids activities! It will now help as I pursue an advanced degree. I highly recommend this cookbook. (I will say that 2 people in the kitchen is a must on a cooking weekend.)

    Book Description

Cook Once a Week, Eat Well Every Day is the ultimate cookbook for today's busy parents. Instead of facing a suppertime circus, it allows moms and dads to prepare meals in advance so they can hurry home to more important things. Author Theresa Albert is a home-cooking efficiency expert who shares her culinary knowledge and organizational expertise—she offers more than three months worth of delicious, nutritious, family-friendly dinners, with plans on how to shop for, prepare, and cook each meal. Since the planning and preparation of each weeknight meal is done in three hours or less on a weekend afternoon, all parents need to do each weeknight is heat things up and get everyone to the table.

The thirteen weekly plans feature delicious and affordable recipes for a variety of tastes, such as Chicken Cacciatore, Meatloaf Florentine, Lemony Baked Shrimp, Baked Mashed Potatoes and Potato Skins, Sesame Broccoli Salad, Easy Minestrone, Oatmeal Cookies, and more. With nutritional analyses, itemized shopping lists, great leftover ideas, countless kitchen tips, and "quickie meals from what you've got," Cook Once a Week, Eat Well Every Day offers less stress Monday through Friday, which makes spending time together as a family possible once again.

    2 out of 5 stars Not a book I want to keep........2007-08-30

Reviewer's review above pretty much sums up just about everything I would say about it. They are indeed healthy (it's only plus), but it's the book itself that I have a problem with. When I read the title, I thought a week was a week. It's not though, a week to Albert is only Monday through Friday; to me that's only part of the week. It's only planning meals for five days and quite frankly, I can do that kind of planning in about five minutes so I don't see why this book would be helpful to anyone, except for the healthy recipes for the health nuts out there.

This book isn't one that I would recommend to anyone, except for the reason mentioned already. Thankfully I checked it out from the library and never made it as a purchase. It's going back today without me ever looking at it again.

I would recommend "The Everything Meals for a Month Cookbook," by Linda Larsen instead. Though be warned, the meals aren't as healthy as this book is. However it's better planning (worth the purchase for that alone), has better tips and so forth.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing recipes in this book!.......2007-05-20

I was looking forward to some fun, new recipes from this book. The author owns a "make and take" store, and this is her cookbook. Not only did I find the recipes odd sometimes, but really not very "family friendly". I am really quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-01-22

I got this book for Christmas & it's already got that delightful "used cookbook" look. As a new mother, I was finding it difficult to find the time to cook each evening (or to even think about what to make), and I was heading to the grocery store several times a week. The shopping lists and work plans have simplified my life, and the recipes are really tasty, easy to prepare, & I feel like we're eating more healthfully and with greater variety than ever. And since we're making healthy foods for dinner, it's easy for me to feed our 9-month-old without much additional work (just cut up & share!).

I do find that I'm buying more meat than I used to, but also different kinds (pork & fish - not just ground beef or chicken breasts).

Since there are only about 5 dinners prepped per week, there's room to add in our old family standards, to go out, or to pick out a frozen "leftover" from one of the earlier weeks. I'm recommending this book to every one I know.

5 out of 5 stars interesting food made easy.......2007-01-08

I am a working mom married to a man who ate too much Americana growing up. Meaning -- I don't have much time to cook, but my husband really doesn't enjoy the typical cream of mushroom soup and hamburger fare that easy cookbooks typically contain. This book saved me! I just finished the first week's cooking. I have five dinners ready for the week, and my husband begged me not to freeze all of the chili so he could eat some for lunch. (And my two year old ate it, too, and loved it. So no worries, there.) If, like me, the thing you hate about cooking dinner is trying to figure out what to shop for each week and what to make each evening, this book is lovely.

5 out of 5 stars the complete package.......2006-09-25

As a Dad who cooks I found variety, nutrition and speed in the plans set out in this well written excellently communicated cookbook. Concepts which before were alien to me became crystal clear and I created my own weekly meal plans to go along with the series that are outlined in the book. The kids actually joined in on the making of some of the plans and true to her word (the author) they actually relished those meals more than the others. Most meals they tried and liked, some a lot and some so so but that's kids and that was miles ahead of where I was three months ago.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes, Great way to get a jump start on this phenomena.......2007-06-25

Wonderful advice on how to do this on your own. The recipes look delicious. I'm getting ready to do this amongst my friends and this book will be our "bible".

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas and foods; time-consuming recipes.......2007-03-09

I purchased this book because the recipes I previwed stood out as unique and tasty, unlike those in many other assemble-and-freeze cookbooks. Most of what I've made has indeed been good, and the instructions given on how to start a cooking group are helpful.

However, every recipe I've tried so far (Beef Pot Pies with Cheddar Cheese Crusts, Moroccan Chicken with Apricots and Almonds, African Peanut and Ginger Chicken) have taken HOURS to prepare. The Beef Pot Pie tasted good, but took days to get done because of all the steps involved (several hours to cook the beef roasts, cut apart the fat and dice into cubes, cut the vegetables, cook the filling, make the crusts from scratch, assemble, cover, and freeze...) I'm a stay-at-home mom of one baby, so I have some time during the day to cook during nap times, but the amount of labor and time that went into some of these recipes was ridiculous. I love to cook, and I've liked what I've eaten so far out of this book. But potential buyers should be aware of the time-intensity of many of these recipes.

One other complaint I have is that no nutritional information is given for any of the recipes, which I believe is a fault of any cookbook.

    4 out of 5 stars Yay!.......2007-03-08

This book is FABULOUS! For anyone thinking of starting a meal-swapping group, this book is for you. There are tips in the beginning to help you get started, and forms in the back to use in helping to determine dietary needs, choices, etc. My mommie's group found this really helpful in transitioning from playgroup meet-up to food swap, and the recipes are wonderful! I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out with frozen meals!

5 out of 5 stars wealth of information, yummy recipes.......2006-11-14

As stay at home mom of two children ages 5 and 3 I need time. I haven't started with a group of other cooks yet, but I've benefited with saving time and offering my family something they usually like. This book is one I pull off the shelf regularly for ideas and information on how to make other recipes in greater quantities. I have made quite a few of the recipes in this book and they all have been whole family pleasers. Some are a bit rich for me, but my children and husband like them that way. I have adapted some of the recipes to be lower in fat. In fact, the information in the book is laid out so well that other recipes can easily be used and all can be adapted to make smaller amounts of meals.

4 out of 5 stars Some good ideas.......2006-07-26

This is a pretty good cookbook for learning how to cook in bulk and for the freezer. The recipe selection is good, and the layout is nice. I haven't made any of the recipes yet, but I definitely like this cookbook better than others I have (in terms of ones for freezing meals). If you are in a cooking group, this is a good starter cookbook.

I met the author at a Chatham Woman's Club meeting where many of the recipes were served. The book is very good, the recipes are ones that are easy to make and delicious. I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A terrific cookbook...easy and creative........2007-03-20

Sleep On It is now my most used and appreciated cookbook. I have been entertaing family and friends using the easy and very tasty recipes from SOI and I have received rave reviews from all my guests. Not one of the recipes has failed me and I have tried quite a few. The instructions are clear and easy to follow...and since most of the recipes can be asembled the night before, I have more time in the moring to get ready for guests.

It is a great little book and I have given away many copies as gifts. EBK

    5 out of 5 stars Easy entertaining.......2007-03-08

If you're a night owl like me and hate early morning cooking, Sleep on It is a godsend. Preparing ingredients the night before suits me fine. Although this cookbook is long on breakfast and brunch items, they can be used at other times just as easily. I especially like the blueberry crumb cake to snack on any time of the day or night. Kudos to Ms. Gordon for pulling together such tasty recipes with such a creative title!

    5 out of 5 stars How clever!.......2006-12-14

I love the concept of this book and I just got it, so I haven't tried many recipes, but it's so cute with little drawings throughout the book and I really like the overnight idea! I think another reviewer criticized the book because it has a lot of breakfasts in it, but... maybe that's the point- usually people have time in the evening before dinner, but no time in the morning. I'll proabbly have some of the breakfasts for dinner anyway with my diet. I can't wait to try the breakfast sausage casserole and the bran muffins!

5 out of 5 stars Quick, Easy, and Delicious!.......2006-12-08

I have shared this cookbook with my neighborhood friends, family, and book group. Everyone who has tried the recipes has been thrilled. The recipes are easy to prepare and please even picky eaters. The cheese balls are great for holiday parties, as are the brunch recipes like the "Southwest Strata." One of my all time favorites is the "Best Brisket Ever." The book makes a great teacher or new parent gift.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I finally purchased this.......2007-08-16

I was apprehensive to purchase this book for a very long time because I thought of it more as a recipe "cook book". There are a number of recipes on the 30 Day Gourmet website and I figured "what do I need the book for?" I have to say that the recipes included are not what the book is really for, although many people will find them very helpful. This book is a how to organize meal planning, period. And it is awesome in that regard. It helps with shopping lists, menu planning, organizing a cooking day; all of which I needed desperately! I have 6 kids, I home school, I take classes, so I am busy. I was going broke from yet another "I am tired tonight, let's just order pizza..." or on the flip side I was getting exhausted from planning my whole day around what to do for dinner. I actually did not use many recipes from this book, but adjusted many of my own for this method. However, many of the reviews criticized the recipes for being unhealthy or too la femme cuisine, but they are all kid-friendly, nutritious and fat content is always adjustable (skim milk, egg beaters, less salt etc...)

3 out of 5 stars great starter book, but there are otheres that are better.......2007-07-27

This is a great strater cookbook in general. It has a lot of usefull charts and general guides. And if your just starting to cook, the recipies are simple.
Thats where it goes worng. Too simple. For my taste, I like a little kick in what I eat. Dont let this be your only coookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes, hope this brings convenience in my life.......2007-06-25

Bought this along with "Cooking Among Friends" with the hopes of dong some bulk cooking and socializing with my girlfriends. I think these books are perfect for what I have in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to get started in Freezer Cooking.......2007-05-13

This book isn't just about the recipes. It really teaches you then how-to's involved in freezer cooking. By reading the book through and then studying the recipes, you can learn to modify almost any recipe to be used by their method.

I'm sold on 30 Day Gourmet!

1 out of 5 stars Meals/recipes are too 'processed' for me..........2007-04-02

The book was only $10 so I'll chalk it up as a learning experience, I guess. The recipes are very "1970's-Use-A-Can-of-Campbell's Mushroom Soup-in-Everything" for me. Or Velveeta. Or some other 'processed' food item. I cook fresh for the most part. There has to be a way to avoid high sodium, processed, fake food and freeze well...right?
