Pan-fried Shrimp with Green Curry Cashew Sauce

Serves 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes

You can purchase bottled Thai green curry sauce in most supermarkets, but this recipe proves how quick and easy it is to make your own. Refrigerate any leftover sauce, covered, for up to 3 days.

1 slice (1/4 inch thick) peeled fresh ginger
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons roasted unsalted cashews
1/3 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/4 cup packed cilantro leaves
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon curry powder
Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
1 1/2 pounds peeled and deveined large shrimp
2 tablespoons olive oil

1 In a food processor, pulse the ginger until finely chopped. Add the 3/4 cup cashews; process until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes.
2 Add the yogurt, cilantro, sugar, and curry powder; season with salt. Process until incorporated, 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed. Transfer to a serving bowl; sprinkle with the remaining cashews.
3 Season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the shrimp; cook until opaque throughout, 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat with the remaining tablespoon oil and remaining shrimp. Serve the shrimp with the sauce.

Book Description

No matter how busy you are, at the end of the day you want fresh, flavorful meals that are easy to prepare. And you want lots of choices and variations—recipes that call for your favorite foods and take advantage of excellent (and readily available) ingredients. In the first book from the award-winning magazine Everyday Food, you’ll find all of that: 250 simple recipes for delicious meals that are quick enough to make any day of the week.

Because a change in weather affects how we cook as much as what we cook, the recipes in Everyday Food are arranged by season. For spring, you’ll find speedy preparations for main-course salads, chicken, and poached salmon that minimize time spent at the stove; summer features quick techniques for grilling the very best burgers and kabobs as well as no-cook pasta sauces; for fall, there are braised meats and hearty main-course soups; and winter provides new takes on rich one-dish meals, roasts and stews, and hearty baked pastas. Finally, a chapter on basics explains how to make year-round staples such as foolproof roast chicken, risotto, couscous, and chocolate sauce.

Designed in a contemporary and easy-to-read format, Everyday Food boasts lush, full-color photography and plenty of suggestions for substitutions and variations. With Everyday Food, even the busiest on-the-go cook can look forward to meals that bring freshness, nutrition, and a range of flavors to dinner all week long.

4 out of 5 stars nice variety.......2007-10-11

I enjoy how the book is sectioned by season, and also the variety of recipes included. I have found several things to try from the book, however I seem to find more in the Everyday Food Magazines than from the book. If I had it to do over I would have skipped on the book and bought a subscription to the magazine instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I've ever used!!!.......2007-10-10

First of all let me just say, I LOVE this cookbook! All of the recipes are easy to make and use common ingredients. It's also great that every recipe has an accompanying picture so you can see what it's supposed to turn out like. And, it's broken up by season so that you're using the freshest ingredients available. I've made about 1/3 of the recipes so far in the book and only came across 1 I didn't like. I'm buying this book for everyone in my family as a holiday gift- it's perfect!!

5 out of 5 stars perfect title.......2007-09-24

This is precisely as billed...great food fast. Clear directions, and lovely pictures of the finished product. Healthy menus that are easily prepared. Love this book, and am giving it as gifts this Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Exceeded My Expectations.......2007-09-23

Maybe not everyone would love the book for the reasons I do, but I really appreciate the vast number of interesting, tasty vegetable dishes using very common market items. There are beef and pork dishes, of course, but those didn't interest me nearly as much as the vegetables, soups, seafood and chicken--which have all been excellent and easy, as promised.

There's a lot in this book--along with some helpful tips at the end, and gorgeous photographs. I was really happy that its not all updated "classic American comfort food" or some variation therein that overwhelms good flavor combinations with too much butter, cream, and salt. These meals have a freshness and flavor that will give them wide appeal, and the preparations are straightforward and easy to make all year long. A very pleasant surprise.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2007-09-14

Good recipes, but I seem to prefer my Every Day Recipes subscription.
I've made a few recipes and they're very good. It's organized by season which is nice. Somehow, I thought I'd like having one big volume better, but I miss my bi-monthly recipes more. They felt more inspirational and I can't tell you why....

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Almost Exactly What I Was Looking For.......2007-10-11

I was looking for a cookbook that follows the guidelines of South Beach Diet and had quick, easy recipes for a busy lifestyle. This book is full of them! It doesn't have a lot of recipes for Phase I, which was a little disappointing. I think it's most important to hook people with good food during Phase I, otherwise they never make it to Phase II. Everything I've cooked so far tastes very good. The variety of recipes and ingredients is impressive. It goes very far to show that just because you're dieting doesn't mean you can't have tasty food.

5 out of 5 stars The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook.......2007-09-24

If you are on a low or no carb diet or just want to eat healthier, this is a valuable tool.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Cookbook for South Beach Quick Meals!.......2007-09-24

This book is exactly as described. It has recipes that we have already used more than once! It is the only cookbook I have been using since we received it in the mail!

4 out of 5 stars It is Good, But is it Complete?.......2007-09-20

There is a lot to The South Beach Diet that makes it so popular, and this cookbook makes a perfect addtion to the diet book. However, I think that we in North America, while chasing the perfect body, forgot about what really matters - the perfect health.

I am a creature that trusts everybody, but not without a dose of skepticism. Therefore I always make a point of trying new approaches on my own before expressing any opinion. After going trough The South Beach Diet I realized that Agatston is just updated version of old Atkins. Although these two low carb approaches certainly bring good results from the point of loosing weight, I am not really convinced that this is what one needs to focus on. First of all, it is a hard diet to follow, and sooner or later one is bound to break some of the rules. Secondly, I find that in a healthy diet we need carbs the same way as we need fats and proteins.

Out of all approaches to losing weight, the one that makes most sense to me is presented by Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year" Using simple language he talks abut all aspect of health and longevity. Following some simple food combination guidelines, and not letting your stomach direct your actions are the basic things that one needs to do. As the author advises: "Eat to live instead of living to eat!" I think that this is the most important thing when considering nutrition. South Beach Diet is good and working, but Agatston missed this one point...

5 out of 5 stars good addition to the diet book.......2007-09-14

This cookbook is a good supplement to the book. It provides a number of tasty alternatives that were fairly easy to prepare.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not a diet but a lifestyle!.......2007-10-11

Being an owner of MANY diet books and having tried quite a few I was a little sceptical about 'yet another diet book'. After reading Harley's book I have been so impressed with the simplicity and the normality of the daily requirements. There is no need to feel like I am missing out on certain food groups just to be able to lose a few pounds. The simple exercise regime is also fantastic especially for someone who is not inclined to join a gym!
I have encouraged other friends to also purchase this book and to get on
board! It is fantastic.....thanks Harley for making getting fit and staying fit potentially so easy!

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-10-06

Really great and comprehensive information. This book is about understanding what you are eating and the effect it has on your body, linked with an easy and very effective workout. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars No starving on this diet.......2007-10-05

The diet plan is easy to follow and doesn't require starving yourself. In fact it was too much food for me so I cut it down a little. However preparing the meals involves a lot of grocery shopping and cooking which is why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall........2007-10-04

I've read the book and have been following it for about 3 days now. I think the idea behind it is very sensible- eating several times a day, high protein, low GI carbs. That all makes sense.
I think that the whole "5 Factor" thing was maybe just the author's desire to have a gimmick? The 5 ingredient thing is kind of a stretch for some of the recipes- many of them would be just as good with 3 or more than 6 or 7 (For example, you could add flavorful veggies to many of the recipes without changing the nutritional value much). The 5 minute prep is a total stretch. I spent an hour this morning getting all my food ready for breakfast, lunch and snacks. And while the workout seems very useful- I like the way it's laid out by day, with varying weight routines- the 5 minutes of cardio just does not seem like enough to see results. I've added about half an hour of cardio at the end of the weights and I think that should help.
Also, I wish there were more guide lines as far as grams of protein per meal. The meals seem strangely inconsistent as far as the amount of protein. Maybe a better list of foods that belong in each category would make it easier to build your own diet.
Overall, I think the idea is great. The way the book was written and the way the information was put together leaves a little bit to be desired. Still, I'm confident that anyone who strictly follows the plan in the book should see results- myself included.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Factor.......2007-10-01

I read the whole book which for the most part was pretty basic stuff. He compares his diet to every other one under the sun and drops celeb names who have used his diet/exercise plan and of course look amazing. If anything I bought the 25 must have foods, but haven't really done the exercise plan, it's pretty simple though.

5 out of 5 stars Giada.......2007-09-23

Giada's food is excellent and usually pretty easy to make. Everything I have made has been at least an 8 out of 10... usually 10 out of 10!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-08-28

I'm a big fan of Giada and her recipes are really good, but I wish there were more pictures in this book. Other than that, this is a great book, and the recipes make up for the lack of pictures. It is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious food that is easy to prepare.......2007-08-25

I received this book as a gift and have made half a dozen recipes so far. Every one of them has been delicious. The recipes are easy to prepare and the ingredients can be found in any supermarket. I have two small children and I can't run half way across the city in order to find young Thai coconuts or Spanish paprika. It is also nice that most of these meals can be thrown together quickly. I read the review where it was said that the writing is difficult to read. ??? I have no problem with the printing.

4 out of 5 stars What's not to love?.......2007-08-15

Giada makes great meals that are easy to put together and make the cook look like a pro. Thanks for the help Giada! I ordered a second copy of Everyday Italian for my mom!

5 out of 5 stars So Good!.......2007-08-11

I love this cook book. I haven't found a recipe we didn't like yet! I love all of her cook books, because the recipes are so easy but the end result is so mouth watering! I never knew it was so simple to cook with fresh ingredients!

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, Rachel..........2007-09-18

I bought this book with great anticipation; however, after making several recipes, I am very dissapointed. Many dishes I've tried have absolutely NO FLAVOR at all. If you like dinners from the 1950's, you may like this; but for experienced cooks with sophisticated palates, this is not worth buying. The fact that there are 170 of these used books for sale should tell you something.

5 out of 5 stars Yum-o.......2007-08-25

I liked the listing of recipes so it was easy to choose what to make without flipping through the entire cookbook. Lots of easy recipes for chicken. When you have normal ingredients, you can still make something taste spetacular.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing I would eat!.......2007-08-24

I didn't like this book. It wasn't very clear. My family would NEVER eat any of the recipes. I was looking for a well-rounded list of recipes, (like joy of cooking) but found this was too "kid friendly" and unhealthy. I returned the book.

3 out of 5 stars 30 Minute Meals.......2007-08-12

I was somewhat disappointed. There is a lot more time to get the meal together than I expected.Otherwise it is well written and organized.

2 out of 5 stars It's just ok........2007-08-07

I did make some kind of turkey burgers with butter and tobasco sauce...I think they were buffalo turkey burgers...don't have the book in front of me...and they were quite good. It had a blue cheese sauce, YUM-O! (To quote Ms. Ray). She finished off the patties in the sauce...

I made a variation...I take the buns and soak them for a few seconds in the butter/tobasco sauce and grill them...it's the only way my picky son wants his burgers now! So, the girl is inventive...it's just not my first pick for a cookbook at supper time. Know what I mean?

Amazon.com

In its many publications and on TV, Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen offers exhaustively tested "best" recipes, tips, and product evaluations. Among its cookbooks, The Best Make-Ahead Recipe offers over 300 formulas that can be prepared in advance, held, and finished later. The recipes range widely from pre-prepared oven-ready dishes like Baked Fish Provençal; "double-duty" recipes, such as Mexican-Style Pork and Chorizo Stew, that use leftovers imaginatively; slow-cooker items like Tuscan white bean soup; and desserts, such as a chocolate soufflé that can go from freezer to oven successfully. In addition, the fully illustrated book offers helpful charts like How to Reheat, which provides advice according to portion size and heating method; special-occasion menus that can be started up to a month ahead; and discerning product and equipment advice.

As with other Cook's Illustrated projects, Make-Ahead includes recipes that have appeared previously in its other works, though a majority of these have been amended with make-ahead or scaling-up data. Almost all the recipes are prefaced with their trademark testing "diaries," exhaustively detailed accounts of the recipe-making process ("With the onion shells figured out, we focused next on the filling...," gives the flavor), which some readers will find enlightening, but others will think excessive. Of course, certain recipes, or recipe classes, like that for desserts, are necessarily made wholly or partially in advance--but the book's point is to provide formulas designed to yield superior results even when the uncompleted dishes are held, as most can be, in the refrigerator or freezer. Mission accomplished. Readers will find the book a consistently reliable resource for superior make-ahead dishes for everyday and special-occasion cooking. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Cookbook From A Cookbook Collecter.......2007-09-14

I have well over 200 cookbooks. I purchased this cookbook because I love cookbooks of course and I love the publication Cook's. If you have to have color photographs this book is not for you. But it is so well illustrated in black and white that you cannot miss a trick with it.
Very well illustrated and a great reference book. I would suggest all in the series for a beginner cook too. I LOVE it. I can honestly say that I do not have a cookbook in this catagory. It is truly worth the money and should be in every cooks library.

3 out of 5 stars Do You Own "Cover & Bake?".......2007-08-26

If you don't own "Cover & Bake," this a five-star book; skip down to "Here's What I Like ..."

I think this may be the lowest rating I've ever given to a CI book (I own seven in the Best series and a handful of others.) If you own "Cover & Bake," you have many of the recipes in this book, hence the low rating.

Some of the shared recipes include:
Slow Cooker Favorites (5 of the 17 are shared with C&B)
-Pot Roast
-Beef Stew
-Brisket
-Chili
-Beef & Barley Soup

Sides (There are two shared recipes)

Casseroles (There are more variations of the recipes in this book) both books share:
-Baked Ziti
-Lasagna
-Manicotti
-Mac & Cheese
-Chicken Enchiladas
-Chicken Pot Pie
-Beef Pot Pie
-Tamale Pie
-Shepherd's Pie
Lamb & Eggplant Moussaka
-Chicken & Rice Casserole

Breakfast & Breads (only the bread recipes are unique to this book. What irks me is that the same photo is used for the start of the breakfast chapters in each book.) Shared recipes are:
-24-Hour Omelet
-French Toast Casserole
-Breakfast Strata

Here is what I like about the book
-TOC in each chapter
-The Double-Duty Cooking Chapter is great -- cook a little extra now for tomorrow's dish that doesn't taste like leftovers
-All of the stews and the majority of the casseroles can be made ahead and frozen. Outside of those categories, you'll find maybe 10 additional recipes that can be frozen.
-Desserts
-Make-Ahead Holiday Menus

If you don't have "Cover & Bake" get this book. When reviewed in isolation, it is a five-star book. If you're deciding which to choose, this book has a range of recipes across appetizers, sides, main courses and desserts. If you're looking for a complete make-ahead meal, this book is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional purchase any public library or busy cook must have........2007-07-27

Busy cooks who want to prepare meals ahead have plenty of cookbooks to choose from, but the advantage to The Best Make-Ahead Recipe is that all these dishes are fail-safe and have been tested by the professionals. Another advantage: chapters are divided by cooking method, from 'Open-Ready Entrees' to 'Slow-Cooker Favorites' and 'Baked Goods That Go From Freezer to Oven'. Some 300 recipes suitable for entertaining or daily meals are presented with accompanying color photos: all have been streamlined with the busy cook in mind. An exceptional purchase any public library or busy cook must have.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook!!!.......2007-07-22

I have purchased other make-ahead cookbooks, such as Once a Meal Cooking and Frozen Assets. This cookbook is the best I've found. This cookbook teaches you how to prepare dishes so that they test fresh when reheated.

I have tried several recipes in this cookbook and they have been great. I was skeptical that it was possible to freeze pasta dishes and reheat them without the pasta tasting mushy. But to my pleasant surprise, the pasta dishes were very good.

Some of the recipes in this book are not recommended for freezing. They are considered "make ahead" since they can be stored in your refrigerator for a few days before cooking or baking.

Book Description

Award-winning chef Nancy Silverton has conquered the gourmet world as the original dessert chef at Spago and founder of the celebrated La Brea Bakery. Her recipes are legendary, innovative, and delicious. However, in the last few years, there has been a great shift in cooking toward the Home Meal Replacement (HMR), better known as “takeout.” It’s impossible to spend hours in the kitchen after a hard day’s work, so more people are buying prepared foods and frozen meals, compromising taste for convenience. Realizing that people’s hectic workdays don’t afford everyone the time to re-create her epicurean triumphs, Nancy has come up with the perfect solution . . .

Enter, the jar!

Compiling a list of her favorite products that come in jars—and cans, bags, and boxes—Nancy has created easy-to-follow recipes that require less than thirty minutes to prepare. With this book there’s no need to sacrifice flavor, sophistication, and taste just because you’re spending less time chopping, cleaning, cooking, or baking. Nancy’s shortcuts not only allow us to produce quick and easy meals at home, they let us bring back the pride and the joy of creating gourmet meals for our family and friends.

A Twist of the Wrist contains 137 quick and delicious gourmet recipes from salads to pasta to meats and desserts, such as:

Cumin Shrimp and Chickpea Salad with Roasted Carrots
Creamy Corn Soup with Bacon and Cheddar Crostini
Orzo with Dried Porcini Mushrooms, Radicchio, and Aged Balsamic Vinegar
Boneless Pork Chops, with Creamy Polenta and Fennel Pollen
Seared Rare Tuna with Tomato-Olive Salsa
Dulce de Leche Ice Cream Pie with Hot Fudge Sauce, Cajeta, and Salty Spanish Peanuts

In addition to Nancy’s own creations, she includes recipes concocted with prepared ingredients from some of her chef friends, including Sara Foster, Tom Colicchio, Charlie Trotter, Mario Batali, Suzanne Goin, Ruth Reichl, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

There is also a pantry section, telling us where to get—by the Internet and mail order—the best of all things canned, jarred, and bottled.

This charming and utterly indispensable cookbook is suited for any type of cook, whether you’re an on-the-go gourmand or you just love flavorful, accessible meals at home. A Twist of the Wrist fits perfectly into today’s modern lifestyle and is a must-have for the contemporary kitchen.

1 out of 5 stars Fails to deliver, little ingenuity.......2007-07-18

This cookbook does not deliver on its premise.

Often the only "larder" ingredient is a single box of pasta, can of tuna, or a jar of roasted peppers. The olive oil or mayonnaise may also come from a jar, but that's hardly revolutionary. I would have preferred the book to include classic larder cooking, old family secrets, and novel twists on larder cooking. If you are an experienced cook, and you already know that you can make a dinner out of tuna, capers, and some olives, and this book will provide you with little insight. As in many Nancy Silverton books (I have several), many recipes have a feeling of "I just slapped this together for dinner, and I thought it was good enough to publish."

The book also fails to include any Asian, or specifically Japanese dishes, which are renowned for springing to like from simple ingredients like noodles, miso, nori, etc. Dried ingredients, such as seaweeds, mushrooms, beans, or rice and mung bean noodles are not addressed. Frozen ingredients, a secret to many kitchens, are ignored. Coconut milk and peanut butter, staples of asian and african cooking are neglected.

Mostly, this cookbook provides a suite of FRESH food, with garnishes made from jars, cans, bags and boxes.

2 out of 5 stars A Twist of the Wrist.......2007-07-18

Really disappointing. Boiler plate in almost every recipe, almost all of which is way below the author's usual standard.

2 out of 5 stars Cookbook.......2007-06-27

We returned this item. My husband had read a review in a newspaper about this and it did not live up to the review. It was more of a gourmet cookbook, not what he expected.

3 out of 5 stars More Complex Than The Title Suggests.......2007-05-23

The recipes are for sophisticated preparations that happen to use commercially prepared ingredients. The recipes, while very good and interesting, are not quick unless you are an advanced chef who would otherwise prepare these dishes from total scratch. My wife returned the book unused.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tool for the Kitchen.......2007-10-10

I love this cookbook. My family was on vacation and a woman we were traveling with had been working her way through the book. She recommended it so I thought I'd give it a try. I have so many cookbooks at home that look great in the store but once you try to cook or bake with them, they really aren't that good. This is not a book that will be moved to storage any time soon. I liked it so much, I've been buying copies for everyone I know that uses a crockpot. I also like the fact that I can omit items from a recipe if I don't eat them - you can't do that with baking. The index is very well organized so if you know either the main ingredient you'd like to use or the name of the dish, you can find what you're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Fix-It and Forget-It.......2007-09-10

This is a great cookbook. Easy to follow recipes and some very great tasting ones! I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for moms!.......2007-08-11

I use the recipes in this book all the time! There are so many options and so many varieties on the same recipe. Great buy!

1 out of 5 stars Fix it and Forget it? I say , "Just Forget it!".......2007-08-05

I just recently purchased "Fix-it and Forget-it Cookbook, Feasting with your Slow Cooker." It is a National #1 New York Times bestseller, so I thought I would have a great book to read while traveling and to cook from at home.

I like cookbooks with pictures; this book has no pictures. I like cookbooks with comments, stories, or history of the recipes; this book has no comments, stories, or history on any of the recipes. I like cookbooks with new and innovative dishes; this book has nothing new or innovative.

If you like cookbooks with a laundry-list of recipes, many just slightly changed from the one next to it, then this book may be for you. If you like community cookbooks, where the recipes are only tested by the contributor, a person you most likely don't know personally, and therefore don't know anything about that person's cooking skills or personal taste, then this book may be for you.

I ask you, what are you going to do with seven similar but slightly different recipes for pea soup? How about 20+ recipes for beef stew? Or an equal amount of recipes for Swiss steak?

This cookbook has over 800 recipes, but they are nothing special; just recipes that are available in every community cookbook or on-line recipe web site. I couldn't actually find one main dish recipe that I would want to serve company, nor was there anything new that "blew me away." Actually, I have never seen a larger collection of b-o-r-i-n-g food anywhere else in my life!

On the upside, there is a small chapter on vegetables (which includes rice dishes (I thought rice was a grain, not a vegetable!) and some stuffing recipes (also not a vegetable). While the recipes in this section are nothing innovative or new, there are some helpful ones, like Caramelized Onions, which I have made; the slow cooker makes them easy so they can be used in other recipes. There are several other good recipes that I have tried, like one for acorn squash and a couple of good cabbage recipes. I found it interesting that there was a recipe for "Extra Good Mashed Potatoes," which had been contributed by five different ladies. The instructions tell you how to cook them, but forget to tell you to mash them before serving!

All said, this is a book of very pedestrian recipes that have been poorly edited. If you are into "meat and potatoes" or like to cook food with no imagination, you may want to pick up this book. Since so many copies have already been sold, chances are you were fooled by the cute cover as I was and already own a copy. If you own it, all is not lost--you can prepare seven similar, but just slightly different kinds of pea soup this week!

5 out of 5 stars Love this!.......2007-07-06

I love my crockpot and this book is part of the reason why. I could throw all the ingredients in, leave for work or school, and come home to a wonderful smelling house and dinner was done! Our favorite recipes from here were Taco Soup and Chicken Tortilla Soup. Very good, especially on a cold winter day.

5 out of 5 stars Yummiest recipes, shortest amount of time.......2007-09-25

I have only tried three recipes so far, but I can tell you they all have been absolutely delicious and they are really only 30 minutes (if not less)! I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantabulicious!!!.......2007-09-17

I bought this book and "The Best Light Recipe" for my husband, who's been a long-time fan of all things Cook's Illustrated-related. I became curious and got instantly hooked. These guys are geniuses! They really know how to communicate effectively to help make cooking fun, because their recipes are so dependable. The instructions are quite different from what I've seen elsewhere (such as MSL's Everyday Food, Real Simple, etc.). Yet these instructions have turned out dishes that are just absolutely wonderful and so much more flavorful and thoughtful than any I've done in the past following other cookbooks!

I'm also a big fan of baking, and I highly recommend "Baking Illustrated" as well. Try the "raspberry almond coffee cake": it's quite yummy!

5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook I have .......2007-08-11

I have too many cookbooks and lately this one has been the one I keep turning to for truly successful recipes time and time again. I'm never afraid of what it will taste like or turn out like because they have all been fabulous. My friend's sister recommended it to her and then she did to me and we have the best time going "Have you tried this one yet??" I agree with another poster though-it's definately a book I would give as a gift!

5 out of 5 stars Go-To Recipe Book.......2007-08-03

When I am planning out dinners for the week, this is my favorite cookbook to use. In the short time I have had this book I have made 5 different recipes and all have been pretty easy and turned out great. Unlike the other reviewers, they do take me longer than 30 minutes to make, although I think it'll be faster when I make something the second time. Our favorites so far are the Chicken Teriyaki, Sweet & Sour Stir Fry, and Steak Salad. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Different recipes?.......2007-05-30

I too am a Cook's Illustrated fanatic. Some of the comments seem to say that CI just takes the same recipes and shuffles them around in various cook books without much thought. I believed this too until I started doing some comparisons. For example, the recipe for skillet lasagna is now different than a previous version. Whether for the better or not, we'll see. I do believe that they go back to the individual recipes to make sure they work within the premise of the cookbook, here meals in 30-minutes. I can just see Kimball with his stopwatch timing them all.
