Book Description

Being a monster isn't all frightening villagers and sucking blood. Monsters have their trials, too. Poor Frankenstein's cupboard is bare, Wolfman is in need of some household help, and it's best not to get started on Dracula’s hygiene issues. What could be scarier?
Nineteen hilarious poems delve into the secret lives of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bigfoot, Godzilla, and others. In a range of styles that pay homage to everyone from Charles Schulz to John James Audubon, the monstrously talented Adam Rex uncovers horrific--and clever--truths you won't want to miss.

...to get this book. He checked it out at the library and then beggged me to buy it. He says, "I love it so much. It has good poems like the Yeti and the Big Foot one, and Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich...it should not have low star ratings because it is the best book in the world! I wish I could meet the author!"....what more does a parent need to say? Buy the book!
P.S. He likes "An Open Letter from Wolfman's best Friend" too!

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good!.......2007-05-23

This long titled book is a collection of Adam Rex's short rhyming tales about the classic monsters. Hard core fan critics of particular monsters may well point out that Frankenstein was actually the scientist who created the monster but obviously referring to the creature as Frankenstein's Monster would make the rhyming hard and increase the already lengthy title of this book as well so I don't think we should be too picky. Adam Rex has also drawn spectacular colour illustrations on every page which are full of detail. You'll even find miniature rhyming verses and picture references to other monsters within such as The Invisible Man on a milk carton with the words Have You Seen Me? being carried by the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the rhyme about that character.

Horror's classic characters who have tales inside include Griffin from H.G. Well's story The Invisible Man. Frankenstein's monster from Mary Shelley's classic tale. The Creature of the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera (he must have been the author's favourite as he has a few stories within), Witches, Wolfman (well his best friend's letter to him anyway), Count Dracula, The Mummy, Yeti, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr Jekyll, Zombies, Bigfoot, Godzilla and the most terrifying monster of all - the Dentist!

This is a very entertaining and funny book. The illustrations mean it will appeal to children as well as adults.

5 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Makes Us Laugh.......2007-04-13

I bought this for my seven year old son who is NOT a poetry fan, and he LOVES it. He even asked if he could take it to school and read his favorite poem, The Creature from the Black Lagoon Doesn't Wait an Hour Before Swimming, out loud to his class. This is a boy who is not a fan of oral reading, ESPECIALLY in front of his classmates! He and I also get the Phantom of the Opera songs stuck in our heads, and walk around singing "There was a phantom had a song and BINGO was its name-o," and "All around the Opera House the Phantom throws a tantrum. The song won't die -- he doesn't know why. "Stop!" goes the Phantom."

All three of my kids enjoy the poems and pictures in this book, but I think it particularly appeals to boys who might otherwise not be very interested in poetry. (I have previously bought books of outer space poems and transportation poems for my son, and he was not interested in them at all.)

I will buy this book as a gift for several other kids!

5 out of 5 stars Frankenstein Makes a family laugh & appreciate poetry.......2007-02-27

We borrowed this book from our town library for our children ages 7-12. Ben 2nd grade, Jack 3rd grade and Geneva 6th grade LOVED THIS BOOK! Parents that watched those 60's monster movie classics will love how those monsters all appear in this book of hilarious poems. The boys especially liked the Phantom of the Opera poem set to B-I-N-G-O.
There was a phantom had a song, and BINGO was it's name-o. B-I-N-G-O See? I told you so. B-I-N-G-O By jingo! What a lame-o.
It bugged the Phantom all night long. He never was the same-o. (clap) His cheeks don't show, (clap) if they did though, (clap) we'd see them glow flamingo pink with shame-o.
At least the phantom knows it's wrong, It caused him to proclaim-o,
(clap)(clap)"I'll have no...(clap)(clap)peace, and so...(clap)(clap) I'll just go and haunt a bingo game-o."
Classic poetry, not, but a lot of family fun and reading enthusiasm, so. I brought this book to the computer to write my review and the kids took it to run off and read it and laugh over. What more do you want from a children's book? We are buying this book as a gift to our school library and also friends' birthdays. Parents will appreciate the joy this book brings to their kids.

4 out of 5 stars Good recipes.......2007-08-14

This is a great little book with lots of tasty recipes. The two ton chocolate cake is incredible for any chocoholic. The breads are not to hard to make and have interesting to complex flavors. I think the instructions could be a little better for some and that is the reason for 4 stars. For example putting 16 cups of flour and 8 cups of milk in a stand mixer is only going to work if you have an industrial size mixer. Cut that in two and your Kitchen aid will knead it wonderfully. Also I suggest you cut the filling recipes in half until you bake a loaf or two and see if you like it.

5 out of 5 stars Bread Heaven.......2007-07-22

Margaux Sky's generosity in sharing her wonderful bread recipes with all of us is rivaled only by the generosity of the sandwiches she invents to fill the breads. I find her sauces particularly clever, adding enormous flavor and blending ingredients simultaneously. I have tried only a few of the recipes so far but all have been winners and I'm looking forward to tasting everything in time. The photographs are lush, able to stimulate an appetite all on their own. This is a marvelous small cookbook. If you are a bread lover, you must add this collection of bread recipes!

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it..............2007-06-21

I was very disappointed in this book. Thank goodness I bought it used. Even I can make better looking bread than this book and bread has usually been a challenge for me to get the perfect loaf. The photography is very nice to look at if you like looking at burnt bread all the time. The recipes do not sound good to me at all.....I bought it because of the title....I was looking for a sandwich/filling recipe book....I didn't even know who Margaux Sky was until I Googled it. Save your money and find something better!! (one star because you can't leave it blank!)

5 out of 5 stars Cookbook.......2007-03-28

Not your everyday sandwich cookbook. I bought this book just for the photo's alone, but the recipes I have tried so far are wonderful! Turns your sandwiches into gourmet meals.

5 out of 5 stars The dishes are surprisingly easy to put together - even the fresh bread........2006-11-07

If this were called 'The Sandwich Book' it wouldn't receive nearly as much attention - but Sky's productions are so much more, and naming it BEAUTIFUL BREADS & FABULOUS FILLINGS is a masterpiece of strategy that more aptly highlights her unique productions. Bright color photos on every page accompany such recipes as Chicken Salad in Minty Yogurt Sauce on Brown Harvest Bread or Reuben with Reuben Sauce on Herbed Rye Bread. And, the dishes are surprisingly easy to put together - even the fresh bread.

5 out of 5 stars I'm hungry just writing this review..........2007-03-08

First of all, I'm amused by the bizarrely aggressive reviewer above. Umm, it's grilled cheese - relax.
Trust me, this book oozes with great content. The recipes include the relatively simple- putting together a special grilled cheese with one of the many well-thought out selections of breads, cheeses, seasonings and accompaniments (like chutney, spicy greens or pickles). Even the simple ones are not combos that I would have thought of, like the tasty Panini Inglese, built from classically English treats like Stilton, watercress, and roast beef.
The book also includes some recipes that are a bit more involved, like the Hot Muffaletta or the Sage, Sausage and Jack Cheese Sandwich with preserved lemons. It's a wonderful exploration of grilled cheese, and I think you will be impressed. I'm certainly enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Cheesy Cookbook.......2006-11-22

Who doesn't love a warm, comforting grilled cheese sammich when the weather gets cold? Some good bread, a few slices of cheddar, butter, and a big crunchy pickle is heaven to me! Throw in a side of tomato soup and we got a winning combination!

I always thought I was creative when I took spinach, pears, and brie and made a very classy little grilled cheese pressed between some heavy skillets. However, Marlena Spieler - a long time writer for Bon Appetit and author of many cookbooks - has brought grilled cheese to a new level. Her book Grilled Cheese: 50 Recipes to Make You Melt is just the thing to bring a creative comfort to your kitchen during the cold season.

The book starts out with a comprehensive review and introduction. She begins by covering various types of cheeses (blue viened, soft, cow, goat, semi-hard, spiced, bloomy rind, smoked and so on in extremely specifc subcategories) and how each can be perfectly utilized and paired for your own creative uses. All are accompanied by a short description describing their general flavors and properties. Since one may not be able to eat a whole wedge of cheese, Spieler also considers the proper storage and handling of cheeses. To further aide the grilled cheese selection process, a section covering breads, meats, fuits, chutneys and so on are all covered so that your experience with her recipes and your own home concoctions! At the back is even a resource guide on where to find good cheese stores or markets, and suggestions on finding local cheeses.

But how do the recipes stand up? Perfectly. Rob and I have already found a few favorites, ensuring that we now keep a few select cheeses on hand, and nudging us to always experiment with a new piece of stinky goodness. Rob's current favorite is the Mediterranean Meltdown; tomatoes, Mahon cheese, and fresh thyme on olive bread. We threw in some sauteed red onions as well for a truly filling and rustic sammich!

I've become partial to the fresh mozarella, fig jam, and prosciutto for it's sweet and salty sensations. The raddicchio, Roquefort and toasted pecans on pain au levain is another delectible tid-bit that goes well next to a blazing heater or roaring fire place.

Breaking out the heavy skillet is definetly part of the charm, but don't think that some of these don't mix it up. Classics such as the tuna melt are revamped. Recipes calling for home made chili aioli, and fruity chutneys make for a flavorful and fun experience and a perfect excuse to visit local farmer's markets. Desserts, salads, and a classic accompaniments also adorn the book, and well as a small section for a few homemade mustards to keep things spicy!

The book is filled to the brim with gorgeous photos any photographer would envy. Sheri Giblin, a local San Francisco food photographer, has done an excellent job bring each and every recipe to life. Luckilly with grilled cheese being such a simple fare, many times yours will look much like the photo. Mine have to my total surprise.

[...] I highly suggest you go order a bargain book copy. Mine has one or two stickers on it, but really, who cares? The book has tons of great ideas, and will fill you with inspiration for simple meals, and fun lunches with friends.

Overall, the book is shibby, affordable, and truly cheesy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mac and Cheese.......2006-03-23

I am of the opinion that if you get one good receipe, that is worth repeating, out of a cook book you got your money's worth. This cook book is much better than that. The concept of using multiple cheeses when making macaroni and cheese was revelatory! Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food and this book takes that to a new level.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me.......2006-03-13

Folks - let me tell you that I cook, that I own many cookbooks, and I really LOVE talking about cooking. I might not be the best, but I truly enjoy spending time in the kitchen.

With that said, I would like to share an ACTUAL 'recipe' from this soon-to-be-dollar-bin book: Quality white bread, cheddar cheese, and a dill pickle. That's a RECIPE. Wow! I hope I haven't given away too much...

...cooking is about experimentation and having fun, right? hey - if you need a book to tell you how to make GRILLED CHEESE SANWICHES then you probably need a book about how to make the ultimate glass of icewater... $16 for a book you could figure out on your own a thousand times over? Hoo-boy - I guess desktop publishing has come a REALLLLY long way....

5 out of 5 stars Mouthwateringly Good.......2004-08-25

Marlena Spieler's new book is just fabulous. Not just the recipes but the mouthwatering photography by Sheri Giblin. In addition to the grilled cheese recipes, there's a detailed discussion of which cheeses and breads to use, and an accompaniments section with recipes for homemade tomato soup and zucchini pickles, as well as a salad summary.

I know what I'm having for lunch, grilled American cheese on white bread with tomato soup. Although, that may disappoint the author, as she says, "American cheese is probably the most famous processed cheese. Don't expect to find it in this book. Why choose processed cheese when there are so many fabulous cheeses to choose from?" (p. 17) Well, first off, I'm in a reminiscent mood. Second, I have the ingredients in the house. But I promise, next time I hit my local cheese shop, I'll have to get some Telleggio and make the "Austin Powers' Shag-a-delic 1970s Grilled Ham, Cheese and Pineapple" or some Gruyere for a classic "Croque Monsieur."

Book Description

In this eating tour of America, the gurus of the road, Jane and Michael Stern, hunt down nearly 100 examples of supreme sandwichery and show how to recreate them in the kitchen. The United Sandwiches of America includes nearly every state, from California (a quintessential Grilled Gruyère with Braised Leeks on multigrain from Clementines in L.A.), to New York (Chopped Liver from the famous Katz’s Deli), up to Maine (an overflowing, warm lobster roll from the Maine Diner in Wells), and down to Florida (a Cuban: ham, pork, Swiss, and garlicky salami with pickles, lettuce, and tomato). It embraces the Muffuletta of New Orleans and the Hot Brown of Louisville (white turkey meat under sizzling cheese with tomato and bacon), not to be confused with the Hot Truck of Ithaca, New York (a pizza sub). Julia Child’s when-nobody’s-looking favourite is here (baked beans on a masterful brown bread), and so is Elvis’s beloved Peanut Butter and Banana. Each of the legendary heroes, hoagies, wraps, grinders, blimps, gyros, and subs comes with its own quirky story. All in all, it's a giant slice of life.

1 out of 5 stars Pull off the Road! For good........2007-09-07

I love cookbooks, especially books on foods I can actually make, like sandwiches. I know of the Sterns through their website, and TV appearances and previous books and picked this one up because the cover was appealing. I was very disappointed. There were tons of recipes and for each recipe a little story about its origins and where the Sterns had eaten it, but no pictures. I know, you don't need a picture to make a recipe, but I have to say if you are going to do a cookbook on sandwiches you have found throughout the nation wouldn't it be nice to see the establishment? Or even the sandwich itself? Also the color of the pages threw me off, and they were very hard to read. The Sterns have made a living on Roadfood, but I think their journey needs to end if this is what we are getting for their efforts.

3 out of 5 stars Recipes look good, but dissappointed that there's no pictures........2007-07-12

This really would have been a fabulous book if they'd have put PICTURES in it! I wanted to know right off the bat where the recipe was for the sandwich featured on the cover, (that looks like a sandwich I wanna try!) -and couldn't find it. I'm thinking it may be the "Will Special" on page 229. At least on the back cover, (two pictures there)it references the name and page numbers.

Other than no pictures, it looks like a good book. For each sandwich recipe, it gives you a little information about it and where it's from. There are condiment recipes.

There are several things I'm going to try from the book. Pictures would have made the book much easier and more pleasant to use.

1 out of 5 stars Re-hash.......2007-05-25

I've been a fan of Jane and Michael Stern for 20+ years. I read all their articles in Gourmet up until Gourmet became nothing but a shill for the advertisers. "Roadfood Sandwiches" is nothing but a re-hash (no pun intended) of their last edition of "Roadfood". The new info in "...Sandwiches" is minimal at best. I suggest you skip "...Sandwiches" and instead buy "Roadfood". It contains the bulk of "...Sandwiches" and much more. They really skated on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Home run for the Sterns.....again!!.......2007-05-13

Whatever the Sterns write, I buy. I wish they would go back to their restaurant books again. They never did one from the Northwest....not fair.

2 out of 5 stars No Pictures..........2007-04-30

I returned this book due to no pictures of the recipes. Not one picture on the inside. Some of the sandwiches sounded yummy and/or interesting (such as the peanut butter and bacon). However, many of the recipe ingredient lists were too long to justify making a sandwich. I love sandwiches, but I don't want to spend time making homemade sauces or olive spread for them. Too much effort for what should be a simple meal.

Dope. Smack. Junk. Heroin. No matter what you call it, you can't change the fact that 13-year-old Benjie is on it. Oh no ... he's not hooked, though. He could stop anytime ... really. But why is a young kid like Benjie using at all? Originally published in 1973, Alice Childress's novel remains one of the most profound explorations of an addict's world ever written. What makes this novel different is that Childress points no fingers and offers no easy answers. Her characters' moods and motivations are complex, fresh, unexpected, and courageously real. Woven into Benjie's own ramblings about his situation are the thoughts of those involved by association--his mother, stepfather, friends, the pusher, and teachers at his school. This narrative technique creates a rich, heroic portrait of the social and psychological circumstances of addiction, love, and family.

3 out of 5 stars Distracting Slang and Accent.......2007-06-10

Benjie is a thirteen-year-old living in the inner city with his mother, grandmother and his mother's boyfriend, who has been like a stepfather to Benjie for years. Benjie had smoked some marijuana with a friend and thought it was cool, but then one day he cuts class and is hanging out with a group of older boys who are using heroin. Not wanting to seem like a scared little kid, Benjie does it, too. Before long, he is a heroin addict, although he insists he can stop whenever he wants.

This story is told from many points of view--Benjie keeps insisting he's fine and complaining about everyone else around him. Benjie's family is overwhelmed by his addiction, especially when he steals from them. Benjie's friend is upset by the loss of his friendship, and one of his drug dealers feels compelled to explain why he is not at fault for Benjie's addiction. Two of Benjie's teachers, a white man and a black man, are both upset but argue over the right thing to do. In the end, the decision about whether to try to kick the drug habit is Benjie's alone. But is a thirteen-year-old kid strong enough to do what's right?

I liked being able to see the different points of view in this story, and to see how one person's drug addiction affected everyone around him. I also liked that there were no easy answers and no real good guys and bad guys. Even the two teachers who had so much conflict between them each had their reasons for what they were doing.

I found the writing itself distracting. The story was written with accents and slang that disrupted the flow. This story was very sad; I wished there was someone who could have stepped in to help Benjie more.

4 out of 5 stars A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich.......2006-11-30

13-year-old Benjie from Harlem has a lot of difficulties in his life. He mad many bad choices by choosing to take drugs. He got addicted to heroin and smoking after Kenny and Tiger let him try a bit. Soon his teachers and principle found out about him and had a talk. He's so stubborn that he keeps on denying that he don't get hooked on drugs. After all, he quits drugs because his stepfather saved him. If you are young and want to read this book, I warn you that at first it'll be quite difficult to understand the language in the book, after a while you'll get use to it.

4 out of 5 stars Urban Idioms.......2006-03-15

I read this book because my son had to read it and I wanted to be able to discuss it with him. Due to the urban idioms, at first I found it difficult to understand the dialogue. Once I figured it out I found the book rather interesting. A 13 year old boy, Benjie, from Harlem is faced with several disturbing choices. Eventually he puts himself in a situation that he is not mature enough to handle and makes a bad choice, which is to try heroin. Once he makes that choice he struggles with the acceptance of being a heroin addict and repeatedly denies it. Yet, all the signs of an addict exist. Ms. Childress uses other characters to explain the ripple effect that occurs in the boy's life and how it has affected the other lives. I recommend the book, however, it is a tough read for young people.

3 out of 5 stars A Hero Aint Nothin But a Sandwich.......2006-02-27

i just read this book for the first time and i did not really like it. it is about a 13 yeal old named Benji who is addictied to heroin and under alot of stress. He can stop anytime he wants to but he doesnt.
the language in this book is also very hard to understand. THere are big words, and phrases can be confusing. This book is ment for people who can really comprehend and understand the way it was written.

5 out of 5 stars great for any young cook!.......2006-11-30

The sandwiches in this book are delicious and inventive. Each step is described fully, but not in a condescending manner. The layout is bright and exciting. I also love the way Dunnington lays out and describes needed supplies at the book's end. I think any child would enjoy working their way through the book and be inspired for further cooking!

As I care for my 74 year old diabetic (former restaurant owner)mother full time -- I am always looking for meals that we both will love. This cookbook really helps. Made the Turkey Burgers last Sunday for us and guests and they were a huge hit! It's the fabulous extras like the red onion sauce in this recipe that make this book so terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Great flavors, easy to cook.......2007-05-15

Diabetes doesn't mean having to say, "Never." Here is food you might have thought you could never enjoy again, but finally, someone has created a cookbook with recipes everyone can enjoy, including people who have diabetes. We all need to learn to cook and eat more healthy food and this is a great place to start. The recipes I tried were easy and turned out perfectly--I especialy loved the pork loin and the braised chicken with leeks. The desserts look tempting and surprising--can't wait to try the poached pears. The Cookin' Kid
