Fruits and Vegetables.......2006-08-09

The thing that I really like about this book was that all the sentences weren't the same. It did not just say "these are bananas, these are tomatoes" all the time, but integrated questions, and even characteristics of the fruits and vegetables. The pictures are bright and colorful, and made me want to go buy a piece of fruit right then. I would highly recommend this book as a useful and practical tool for learning the names of basic fruits and vegetables in both English and Spanish. It is very likely that you will find yourself practicing these words at home when you are eating a piece of watermelon, or chopping a pepper for dinner.

Good work and it's about time.......2003-05-21

I've worked in the restaurant industry as a waitress for years and never knew a word of spanish. This made communication with the kitchen staff very difficult for me. After years of playing charades and mime to get what I needed I can finally ask for what I want. I found the book very easy to use and the phonetics very helpful. I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety and range of the phrases and words listed in the book. In particular I was impressed by the waitstaff section. Good job Jason, it's about time someone wrote this book.

I was really hoping that this book would help me, but it's just not doing the job. It's so complicated and the stuff I need isn't in there. The kitchen is a really fast paced place to be in and this book is good if you can sit down and study it but in the kitchen, it's a waste. That's what it is to me, a total waste of money.

This book has been a tremendous help in helping me train in my restaraunt. How about a south of the border book? There are distinctly different dialects. I found Mexican is very different than Spanish. Does anyone else agree?

This a reference book for someone with basic knowledge of the Spanish language. Most of the words can be found in a regular English- Spanish dictionary. The book is divided into sections (Hiring, Food, Front of the House, etc), which is very good, but unfortunately the words are not listed in alphabetical order. I would not recommend it to a translator.

This book has really helped me at work. All these people talking about imperfections in the book are missing the point. Spanish scholars don't need this book. Regular folk like me are the people who need it. Believe me, this book helps.

This book contains a multitude of little errors and it jumps between the formal (usted) and informal (tu) forms without distiguishing between the two.
It does the job "more or less" if you're in a pinch, but there has to be something better than this out there.

I found this booklet to be outrageously priced, incomplete and not user friendly for a publication intended for use in a commercial kitchen. Any standard English-Spanish phrase book would do just as well.

After 3 years, I still love this book!.......2002-03-14

When I got Kitchen Spanish 3 years ago, I didn't speak a word of Spanish. I really don't know it now either, but I speak to my kitchen assitants every work day using Kitchen Spanish and it works. I guess if I really wanted to learn proper Spanish, I would get a Berlitz immersion program or something, but for me, in my job, Kitchen Spanish works like magic. I don't know what I'd do with out it.

Sugar Artistik.......2000-07-25

As a beginner in the art of pulled sugar I found this instructional book very helpful. It goes into the basics of pulling sugar without getting boring. However, I also took a (short) class with an experienced teacher so much of the book did make sense to me. Also of interest is their catalog in the back of the book from which one can buy equipment needed for beginners plus all sorts of other neat equipment. I think this book is a great addition to my sugar pulling library and I recommend it.

FABULOUS BILINGUAL COOKBOOK!.......2002-02-21

This bilingual English / Spanish cookbook is absolutely FABULOUS!!! Liora Cohen has done an excellent job compiling a variety of recipes that are delicious and prepared easily with common ingredients. This cookbook has everything you could ever want in it. A friend of mine just came from Mexico and she didn't know how to cook an American Thanksgiving dinner. I shared recipes from this book with my friend. It was ALL in this cookbook!!, right there for her in Spanish!!! Thanksgiving Turkey, recipe 288; Turkey Stuffing, recipe 171; Carrot Cake, recipe 125, etc. There are three flan recipes, two for regular flan and one for coconut flan, that I intend to try as soon as I get the chance. There's a nice recipe for red beans and rice. This cookbook is spiral bound so the pages lie flat, and the spiral binding is very strong and durable. The recipes are similar to fund-raising type cookbooks (everyone's favorite recipes), with 308 recipes in this book. There is Spanish on one side of the page and English on the other side. A lot of the recipes are fundraiser-favorite types of food, but with popular Spanish food also, such as Black Beans (Oh! Good!!), Mexican Lasagne (different and tasty), Meat Empanadas, Cactus Leaf Salad (Nopales Salad), etc. There are lots of different recipes, and even more of the "home cooking" type. At the end of this book, Ms. Cohen has added twenty pages of extra help. Included are Heart Healthy Hints & Low Calorie Substitutions. Also, there are lots of useful conversion charts as an added extra (You don't need them to cook from the book as everything is very clear in the recipe instructions, but it's interesting to have ounces to grams, Fahrenheit to Celcius, inches to centimeters, liquid measures and dry measures). There is also a useful yield chart included (example: 1 lb. cabbage head = 4 1/2 cups shredded; 1 lb. carrots = 3 cups shredded; LOTS MORE!) There are drawings of lots of kitchen utensils with their names in English and Spanish. VERY HELPFUL!!! Now I know the names of kitchen items in Spanish, or if I forget, I can refer back to this book. The funnest part about this book to me is the bilingual aspect. It's EXCELLENT for learning even more Spanish, and how to say things that aren't exactly in textbooks. :-) Sometimes, I just read this book for fun, with no intentions of cooking, although it's a SUPER cookbook too! It's also enjoyable to share with friends and family in either English or Spanish. This book has been proofread very carefully, and it is professionally done. I appreciate what Ms. Cohen has done in putting it together. It's one of my very favorite cookbooks. ESTE LIBRO ES FABULOSO!!! I HIGHLY recommend it!... and I'm an acquisitions librarian that has seen a lot of books! Thanks again, Ms. Cohen, for a job well done.

well, it's informative but horrible. it is written in a disgusting fashion. liora a. cohen should be ashamed. i was a fool to even open it. i regret that day like i regret the day i lost my puppy dog. i miss my puppy dog just like i miss being able to cook in english and spanish without thinking about ms. cohen and her work of terror.

This is a fantastic cookbook for people with an interest in Latin cooking. There are also more modern takes on traditional recipes, which makes it easier, as well, to eat healthier (avoiding some of the fats, etc.). I lived in Latin America for many years, and this is the gift that I give to friends who are heading out to the Spanish speaking world. I guarantee them that they, and their friends, will use it over and over again.

This is an absolute must have for those who do a lot of travel and culinary excursions to France. Almost every michelin starred chef in Paris is featured (save Alain Ducasse, but he has enough books) with an in depth interview and three or four recipes from each chef. Photography and binding quality is first rate. Many of the chefs featured do not have books of their own, so this is really the only way you'll get a peak into their culinary style and execution. Highly recommended for those who can't make up which restaurant to visit first.

I purchased this book for my lovely girlfriend. I love the fact that the recipes are in spanish & english (spanglish). I highly recommend this book to the first time cook or the part time cook or the spanish cook who would like to try english recipes but cannot find a spanish cookbook!! This was an interesting, early attempt at compiling a cookbook of Cuban recipes. Having the book in two languages may help your local library, but most chefs speak one language or the other -- the result is a lot of wasted space. The simple graphics and lack of photos are uninspiring and there is nothing here that will entice or motivate you. A better choice for contemporary Cuban cuisine: Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban <ASIN: 158685433X>.

There's a wonderful Cuban restaurant on our neighboring island of St. Croix. So, I was thrilled to find this charming book. Easy to understand and filled with mouth-watering recipes to remove the drudgery of cooking. If you like this book, you'll love Angela Spenceley's two new cookbooks "Just Add Rum!" and "A Taste of the Caribbean". Both books are valuable additions to any good cookbook library.
