1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THE SOLUTION MANUAL! It's a TRICK!!.......2007-03-12

I am taking a course using "Active Stats" ISBN 0-321-28671-5 as the textbook. The textbook includes an appendix with solutions for the odd numbered homework problems only, but I wanted all of the solutions to help doublecheck my work as I went. This manual is advertised (by name and ISBN number) on the back "Active Stats" as the companion "Student Solutions Manual", so I ordered it. When I received it I was shocked to discover that all this Manual contains are the odd numbered solutions - which, as I mentioned above, are already in the textbook as Appendix B!!!

I am writing a letter of complaint to Addison Wesley. The company should be ashamed for publishing the SAME EXACT material that appears as Appendix B Pps A-4 through A-43 in the textbook as a supplementary text- and for advertising it as such on the back of the textbook! Shame on Addison Wesley!!!

3 out of 5 stars Instructor's edition.......2007-01-20

This book is the instructor's edition, which I did not realize. All of the content is the same as the student edition, for the most part. It came fast and was in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2004-03-23

This actually is a fantastic textbook.

De Veaux and Velleman are realists; they know that you don't want to read everything. They have taken the liberty of highlighting important parts of their explanations. (They also highlighted a bit of advice recommending that students read more than just the highlighted text-they have a good sense of humor that shows up throughout the book.) The authors also provide a fantastic summary of "Key Concepts" at the end of each chapter.

Also, they have clearly gone to great lengths to find interesting topics to use in their exercises. There are very few mind numbing homework problems. You know the type: "In the following data about the most frequently purchased brand of toenail clippers..."
How about a question like this: What is the likelihood that reading a randomly selected example question will be more painful that attempting to swallow the textbook it came from? If you're selecting from Intro Stats, put down your fork and knife, because De Veaux and Velleman have gathered some topics that I think most people will genuinely find interesting. Such topics include: drug use among teenagers, stance on the death penalty, changes in average marriage age, and many others.

I've never felt compelled to review a textbook before, but this one is worth it. It's good stuff, my friends. Good stuff!

4 out of 5 stars (Almost) Math-less Stats.......2003-06-16

This is a well-organized, nicely put-together textbook, with lots of step-by-step examples to give you a good base of understanding and lots of problems and section reviews to allow you to apply and extend that understanding. If you're intimidated by math, this textbook will go a long way toward easing your fears, and if you're a lover of math, you'll learn a lot about Statistics and be highly entertained along the way.
Although an introductory calculus class was a prerequisite for the course I took using this text, the only time integrals and complicated formulas showed up was in footnotes or the occasional homework problem. In general, the book aims to teach through real world examples and applications, not through pages of potentially intimidating to-be-memorized equations and formulas. As a result, the "math" parts of the book (you can't really do Statistics without math) are hidden, so that you are often using "math" without realizing it.
I especially liked the book's listing of instructions, for a variety of Statistics software packages, about how to do on the computer whatever you'd just learnt in a chapter. There are some "do by hand" problems, but just as many "use the computer" problems--helpful, given that any time most of us will be using Statistics again will be for a job or for research and will involve computer software.
There are all sorts of random facts that break up the practically inevitable "ugh" feeling of reading a textbook. In addition, the writing is very clear and informal, without lots of technical jargon (what little there is is clearly explained first--no wondering in Chapter 15 what that darned "r," which you've been seeing since Chapter 6, means). When reading, I always felt the authors were talking to me through the page, which made reading go faster and more pleasantly. (The short chapters help, too.)
I also found the "What can go wrong?" sections at the end of each chapter useful, especially when we got to interpreting data: several times, I would try to do a homework problem, then go back to the chapter and realize I'd made a beginner's mistake and done exactly what I wasn't supposed to do. The authors know what first-time Statistics students are thinking, and they do a good job of steering you along the right course.

4 out of 5 stars AP Calculus.......2007-01-04

It's concise and clear for a review book. No use if you're LEARNING form it though, since it's designed to invoke and strengthen memory rather than to explain and teach. Great, challenging questions with good explanations.

4 out of 5 stars good as a supplement to the class.......2005-09-10

This is a book that is best for final preparation for the exam. Last year, in BC Calculus, I was absent for the series and sequences lessons due to an illness and I came back for a test studying through the Barron's books and I had trouble understanding it. The tests are definitely a lot harder than the real thing. I studied my [...] off and got a 5 on the actual exam as well as a 5 on the AB subscore.

4 out of 5 stars A Fair Book.......2005-07-16

This book is very comprehensive, too many details at times. The practice test is a little bit more difficult than the actual test. It is not very well organized or appealing to look. There aren't enough diagrams and pictures for visual learners.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2004-10-01

I had several sources to help me do well in AP Calculus AB. One of them was this book.

Finney, Demana et al. "Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic" just doesn't include enough problems. To boot, the presentation is pretty poor as too many images are bombarded at your eyes. Barron's includes a lot of extra problems for you to make sure you can apply what you know.

Provided that you work hard in class and outside, this book can help you get a five.

3 out of 5 stars a bit harder than actual test.......2004-09-26

I bought two books, barrons' and Princeton's. The former was much harder to understand and contains more information than the latter. When I studied
Princeton's, I was relieved, but when I studied barrons I
became afraid that the test was really that hard. However,
when I took the real test, I found that the actual test
was more like Princeton's than Barrons'; and I got 5 on
the exam. I recommend you to buy this book for experiencing
the hardest questions that would be on the actual exam.
If you only use Princeton's, you may be frustrated to find
that there are some questions that aren't on the Princeton's
practice exams.

Book Description

Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.

Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.

Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.

In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.

5 out of 5 stars Real tools to improve life.......2007-09-26

With the library book still sitting on my desk I am purchasing a copy of my own. While I have always been thankful (and blissfully ignorant) that MY kids haven't needed all those restricted diets or been negatively impacted by vaccinations, this book has helped open my eyes and really look at the health of my family. I am thankful to find an abundant source of information that is geared towards HEALING the ROOT CAUSES of illnesses in our children. Pediatric medicine is filled with caring doctors who help treat symptom after symptom, infection after infection as seperate pieces of a complete body. This book details complicated approaches to treat an entire child, not just medical conditions that have become alarmingly common and acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars I would have paid $1,000 for this book! All of our children are in grave danger, and we MUST protect them! Everyone read this!!!.......2007-09-16

Would you pay $17 to save your child from a life of chronic illness?? Of course you would! I am a well educated person in the medical field, and this book blew me away! I thought that the vaccination controversy was just parents finding something to blame for their sick kids, because physicans assure that they are safe. Well, guess what?? The government drastically changed the vaccination schedule in 1991, and the way that they administer them now, is harming our children! 2 studies of populations that do not vaccinate, had NO cases of autism!! Autism in our country has increased by 6,000%, and it is not the type that you are born with-that is still EXTREMELY rare! There is an epidemic of illnesses that are negatively affecting our children, and this book addresses all of them, as well as how to heal them! Our children's immune systems are being viciously attacked by a combination of toxins, and they are being severely injured. This book does a fabulous job of covering each in detail, from the negative impact of vaccines (our children were administered huge amounts of toxins); the epidemic of food allergies, which causes everything from ADHD, to learning and behavioral problems; the toxins in our food: from the antibiotics and hormones that are in our meat supply, to the pesticides and chemicals that are in everything else; and the toxins in our water and air. The reason that you don't hear about these things, is that our medical system and government are run by big business. There is money to be lost by natural therapies, and eating pure foods, because there is no pill to prescribe! There is a huge coverup in play, and we MUST educate ourselves and be our own advocates! Even if your child, (or yourself for that matter) are currently healthy, chances are, you won't be for long!! Your child can be a totally "normal" two year old, and then lose speech, mobility, and social interaction skills and become a shell of what they once were! ADHD and Asthma are increased by 400%! If you are a parent, or even know people with children, you need to read this book! If we don't do something drastic now, we are going to have an entire society with chronic illnesses, and our country will be severely affected! We need to be armed with knowledge and band together to fight the system, and protect all of us! I implore you to read this book, and tell everyone that you know- you will not be sorry!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, coherent book.......2007-08-25

I love this book. Dr. Bock discusses treatments for autism and intermingles it with personal stories of past patients. Then the second half of the book, he lists out the supplements, what they do and what to give them for. He gives case studies. This is one of those books that is always out on my desk, because I am constantly referencing it. I have gotten plenty of good advice from the book that has not only benefitted my autistic child, but also the general health of my other two children. In addition to this book, I recommend "Children With Starving Brains".

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Bock is a miracle worker!.......2007-06-12

My 3 year old son was diagnosed with autism at 20 months and has been Dr. Bock's patient for 1 1/2 years. His book is a miracle for all parents with children on the autism spectrum or related diagnoses. His treatment is simple yet extraordinary in bringing about changes and recovery in children. My son was mute, violent, refused to eat or sleep before Dr. Bock's treatment- now, 1 1/2 years later, he's ready to be mainstreamed into preschool. He has performed miracles with my son, simply by recognizing the root causes of my son's condition and treating it simply through diet, supplement therapy and removing metals. He makes no promises, but I can tell you from our experience that he has truly worked miracles for my son and our family!

5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-05-29

Excellent information on Autism, ADHD, Allergies and Asthma. With the current epidemic of these disorders the information presented is timely and very hopeful for those afflicted with these conditions. Utilizing expertise from both the medical and alternative camps, many useful strategies are presented. I highly recommend this book for parents and professionals working with the Four A's.

Book Description

By leading with practical data analysis and graphics, Stats: Modeling the World gets students “doing statistics” and “thinking statistically” from the start. Students understand what we find in data, why we find it interesting, and how we report it to others as a sound foundation for the challenges of inference. Instructors praise Stats Modeling the World as clear and accessible to students, and students report that they enjoy reading the text while learning how to do Statistics with the Think, Show, and Tell rubric and What Can Go Wrong? sections.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars specially tailored for the AP.......2007-07-10

If you are teaching AP Statistics to a competent high school group, this book was written for you. Literally. It was written with the AP exam in mind. The second edition has even been changed largely with a view to reflecting the recent minor changes in that exam.

So the authors' terminology, their practice exercises, their equations, and -- most importantly -- the range and depth they marshal correspond exactly to the level students must master to score well on the AP Statistics exam.

Further, it has been very slickly brought off and is readable and entertaining. At least as much as possible, given that some tedium lies ahead for students who wish to land a 4 or 5 on said exam.

It goes without saying that neither the explanations nor the example exercises summon the specters of integration or differentiation, but some of the end-of-chapter exercises can be easily ratcheted up to this level by an imaginative instructor.

Some of the sidebar readings in some of the chapters, however, do anticipate mathematical statistics. But it's up to you how deeply you want to spell out the mathematical implications of these readings.

Since this book contains many questions that aren't answered except in materials available only to instructors, I wouldn't recommend it for self-study. It would probably prove too frustrating.

On that head, there are plenty and plenty of resources available for the instructor that chooses this book, such as the AP* Test Prep Workbook for Stats: Modeling the World, 2nd Edition and the highly useful Graphing Calculator Manual: Intro Stats: For the TI-83 Plus, TI-84 Plus, and TI-89.

5 out of 5 stars A good read about the gnostic gospels.......2007-04-20

The secret's out! At least that's what the 'new school' of thinking suggests. The new movement states that the Gospel of Judas, Mary, Peter, and a number of other gnostic gospels out there reveal a secret about early Christianity.

While many claim these works have been 'destroyed' or 'hidden' from consideration in the 1st century, we find that most of them were actually written in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th centuries. The reason why the disciples and the early 1st century church fathers didn't include them was because they didn't even exist yet! Secondly, those that were witnesses (disciples) or those that followers of the disciples (ie: Polycarp) was able to distinguish which group of writings were factual and which ones weren't. To bring it to today's example, consider on one hand you have a copy of Newsweek and the other, a copy of notorious gossip paper, THE INQUIRER. Which publication would you trust for factual events? Which publication would you rather share with your friends and family? That's the type of questions that these church fathers asked themselves by the 2nd century AD. Unfortunately, like the past, there are always people wanting to buy the gossip magazines (gnostic gospels).

The question is, should we, as open minded individuals believe these late gnostic manuscripts are trustworthy over the 1st century works of Luke, Paul, and others? Should we really subscribe to the 'gossip' columns of the past or to the truth? I guess in the end, that's all up to you.

In short, the Missing Gospels is a wonderful well-researched book that explains to you what type of 'gospels' the gnostic works were and truly defines their purpose. And in the end, the book gives you the facts to make up your own decision, and poses a question to any honest reader...which works would you rather read?

You can argue all day who wrote what first, but the truth is "The triumph of Christian Literalism was a spiritual and cultural disaster from which we are still recovering." -- a quote from 'Jesus and the Lost Goddess, the secret teachings of the original christians' by Timothy Freke & Peter Gandy. They make a grand study of the PRE-CHRISTIAN gnostic teachings and the next quote on page 11 (2001 Harmony Books edition) points up facts that can't be denied: "When Literalist Christianity exiled the Gnostic Inner Mysteries, it lost its soul. It became a bastion of the 'hypocrites' which the Gnostics portrayed Jesus as mocking in their gospel story - ecclesiastical autocrats who imposed their dogmas with threats and maintained their power through violence (many inquisitions,etc)-also read Richard Rubenstein 'When Jesus became God'-, politicians dressed up as priests who justified the laying waste of whole continents (30 yr. war in Germany) and the enslaving of millions. (more detail in footnote) Literalist Christianity is often credited with inspiring positive social reforms in Western society. But the truth is that the driving impetus for humanitarian change has come from humanists and non-conformists. The conservative forces of the established Churches have resisted every step towards greater compassion, from the ending of slavery to the abolition of the death penalty. In recent decades, unable any longer to simply bully us into submission, Literalist Christianity has developed a gentler, more attractive face. Yet its darker side continues to be a nefarious force in the world. A recent report estimated there are at least 8,000 'missionaries' active in Guatemala alone, many of whom openly collaborate with the brutal secret police". . . . Wow, this goes on, but we must learn with an open mind to truly understand both sides of an old story here!! please do not take all this as "gospel". . . . . you need to remember the 'devil' was made up to scare us from that proponents didn't want us to know or investigate; protestants don't look too good sometimes here either; maybe the real 'devil' is efforts to keep us from learning all there is to know about in this life. . and to make us feel the need for some "outside help" . .

5 out of 5 stars Good job.......2007-04-09

This is a well-written exposition of the gnostic gospels and whether there was truly a conspiracy back in the day behind these texts. People curious in theology and the early roots of Christianity should read this to get a better 'balanced' approached on reading the twisted but historical gnostic texts.

For instance, one example of a twisted text is the Acts of Philip, which talks about how Philip and his group slayed a dragon, and converted a talking leopard into Christianity. And to think they use this to support The Lost Tomb of Jesus?

The Missing Gospels, the nail on the coffin for those that think gnostic gospels are true.

5 out of 5 stars The orthodox response to the missing gospels enthusiasts.......2007-02-24

Met any "Da Vinci Code" believers? Yes, who hasn't? It seems the bookstores are chock full of sensational bestsellers that prove that there were alternative Christianities, better Christianities, lost "gospels" hushed up by corrupt clerics, and sensational finds that would prove Jesus was really a mushroom (I am not making this up; there really was a bestseller that claimed that Jesus was a mushroom cult).

At any rate, what's the truth? Bock sets out in this short book--it's a mere 230 pages--to offer to the general reader an overview of the orthodox response to these claims.

He succeeds, for the most part. This is only a general overview so a bit of the information is sketchy. But for the average reader who only wants to know the basic facts, "Missing Gospels" will be of great help.

So why were some gospels not added to the bible? And do we now have information about forms of Christianity that we never had before?

The "missing" gospels were Gnostic texts. "There was never a 'Gnostic church' only a conglomeration of disconnected schools that disagreed with each other as well as with the traditional Christians. These Gnostic groups...operated...like Greek philosophical schools" (p 23-4).

These texts were not lost in the sense that no one knew they ever existed. The church fathers wrote about them frequently, albeit with great disdain. So we already had huge numbers of quotations from these texts. One thing that finding some of these texts has done is prove the early church fathers quoted them correctly. a change that was made in the mid 1800's.

The crux of the issue is the time period the Gnostic texts were written in. If, as Bock and other orthodox scholars contend, they were written one hundred years or more after all the rest of the gospels, then there is no real case for a multiplicity of Christianities. Instead, there was just plain old orthodox Christianity, and the various schools of Gnosticism were the pagan response, and a pretty sad response at that, to a vibrant religion which was soon to swamp them.

Why is the time period so important? Because by 110 AD Christianity was already a flourishing faith with an solid theology. 1 Clement and Ignatius' letters prove that. They show Christian communities formed in a wide swath across the empire, bishops and leaders in place, and a theology which was orthodox.

And Christianity was making a real impact already. There had been "vast numbers" of them in Rome that Nero tortured and killed. And there were so many of them that Pliny complained that the pagan temples were deserted.

What Paul's letters, and 1 Clement and Ignatius show is that the communities were close, frequently visited, wrote constantly, and believed the same thing.

"The importance of instruction by traditional missionary link between communities are two dynamics that Gnosticism seems to have lacked" (p 33). Paul, our first evidence, insists again and again on the importance of tradition. "Tradition oriented Christians from the earliest days appealed to what had been passed on orally to them as teachings (p 33).

And then there all the gospels, all written in the first century. I am not going to go into the long and exhausting arguments about dating the gospels. But anyone interested should pick up books by Martin Hengel.

But what about the Gnostic texts? There is not a single quote that can be placed in the first century. Not one.

Crossan and others used to argue that parts of the "Gospel of Thomas" was very early, but even that has been disproved. Nicholas Perrin has recently landed a mortal blow to "Thomas", proving it was derived from the Diatessaron, circa 170 AD.

The reason the Gnostic gospels are missing from the New Testament is that they were not Christian and not early. They were never in the running to begin with. And no one had any trouble distinguishing between a Gnostic and a Christian. The Gnostics, as the early church fathers acidly pointed out, were the ones who were never fed to the lions.

To get a glimpse of deep scholarship, try N T Wright's "Judas and the Gospel of Jesus". N T Wright is one of the most famous biblical scholars, and this book is his response to the recent discovery of the "Gospel of Judas". What's so great about this book is way that he skewers liberal scholars Bart Ehrman, Pagels, etc. These scholars have for decades played fast and loose with the truth, and it's about time someone called them on it.

The best book on the subject of Gnosticism is "A Separate God" by Simone Petrement. She argues forcefully, and, I believe, convincingly, that Gnosticism was a pagan reaction to Christianity.

This text has been updated through 2006 including the 2005 Regents
examinations. The newer volume has fairly comprehensive proofs
of the parallelogram, trapezoid and other elusive mathematical
forms. For instance, the parallelogram is proven; thusly,
- congruency of vertical angles
- opposite sides are parallel
- when 2 lines are parallel, the alternate interior angles are =
- midpoint referencing equal segments which are parallel length
are congruent

There is an extensive section on arithmetic operations, complex
numbers, translation points, trigonometry, quadratic models
and solution sets for recent regents examinations. The work is
easy to understand, it is current through to 2006 and the
price is reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful intro to morality's role in Western Civilization development.......2007-02-08

As an adult student, I feared having to take History 101. It was an online class, and the professor I had was not very good, but this book taught me a lot. The authors emphasize the relationship of ethics and morality with the development of western religions and governments from early Mesopotamia until 1789. For example, it helped me to understand the different viewpoints of the contemporary issues happening in the Middle East (why and how religion serves as a basis for many governments.)

If you are considering taking a History course that uses this textbook, or just want to learn more about how our world's societies have developed, I highly recommend this book. I didn't continue with History 102, but I did buy Volume II of this book series from Perry, et al., to continue my understanding world issues. Please join me!

Book Description

With the explosive increase in availability of English Bible translations, the question can easily be asked, “Why bother with the hard work of biblical exegesis?” Computers can translate foreign languages and our English texts can take us very close to the original meanings, so why exegete? Answer: because the deepest truths of the Bible are found through the deepest study.

This book teaches the principles, methods, and fundamentals of exegeting the New Testament. It also has examples of textual exegesis that clearly and helpfully show the value of exegeting a text well. Any serious student of Scripture would benefit from utilizing this book in the study of the Bible.

Interpreting the New Testament Text is a contemporary application of Paul’s charge to Timothy to study to present himself to God, approved as one who correctly handles the word of truth. Highly recommended!”

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2007-01-04

Interpreting the New Testament Text: Introduction to the Art and Science of Exegesis edited by Darrell Bock and Buist Fanning is divided into two parts. The first deals with methodology. This section travels from defining "Exegesis" through 13 chapters to application, ethics, and preaching.

In between the authors survey and explain textual criticism, grammatical analysis, diagramming, lexical analysis, exegetical problem solving (validation), background studies, genre studies (narrative, epistolary, apocalyptic), the Old Testament in the New, and theological analysis. All of this covers just over 300 pages.

The second section of the book provides 150 pages of exegetical examples of these activities written by some big name scholars such as I Howard Marshall and Edwin Yamauchi and many other lesser known but still excellent scholars.

The book as a whole is extremely well organized and has the wonderful benefit of bibliographies at the end of each section.

Overall the book is an excellent introduction for those who are just beginning to study New Testament Interpretation. For more indepth study Stanley Porter's Handbook to Exegesis of the New Testament is a more advanced level book, but even still don't loose Bock and Fanning, it has made a valuable contribution to the field.

Also unlike some similar books, Bock and Fannings's book is a hardback which will last longer.

Finally, the book is a Festschriften (a sort of tribute) to Harold Hoehner, who had a major impact on how exegesis was done at Dallas Theological Seminary.

Quality text, quality workmanship, five stars.
