Book Description
As thousands of wines from around the globe enter the marketplace and the American palate continues to adopt flavors from a range of cultures, the task of pairing wine and food becomes increasingly complicated. No longer is the choice simply red or white, or wines from California, France, or Italy. The typical shopper today has access to wines from those regions plus South Africa, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia. If that isn't confusing enough, Asian, Latin American, and Creole dishes might find their way onto the same table. Perfect Pairings, by well-known Master Sommelier and respected restaurant industry veteran Evan Goldstein, provides straightforward, practical advice for choosing the right bottle for each meal. The quintessential resource for matching wine and food, this book includes 58 companion recipes developed by celebrated chef Joyce Goldstein that showcase each type of wine.
Perfect Pairings combines in-depth explorations of twelve grape varietals, sparkling wines, and dessert wines with guidance about foods that enhance the wide range of styles for each varietal. Whether the Chardonnay is earthy and flinty; rich, buttery, and oak-infused; fruity and tropical; or aged and mature, Goldstein explains how to match it with dishes that will make the wine sing. His clear, educational, and entertaining approach towards intimidating gastronomical questions provides information for all readers, professional and amateur alike.
16 full-color photos
Six seasonal and special occasion menus
Tips for enhancing food and wine experiences, both at home and in restaurants
Glossary of wine terminology
Overview of the world's primary wine-growing regions
Recommendations of more than five hundred wines, ranging in price from everyday to splurge
Customer Reviews:
Great on content, poor on photos.......2007-09-28
If you don't care that much about photos with recipes, this book is excellent on text. There is a photo section in the middle but personally I like to see at least half of the cookbook with accompanying photos. I gave this as a first anniversary gift to my son and daughter-in-law because they enjoy both wines and foods. She liked it a lot for the information about how to combine dishes and also the sections on history of the wines/regions. It is weak on information about American wines and in some cases it might be difficult to find some of the foreign wines mentioned. I would probably use it more as a reference book than a standard cookbook.
chef and wine specialist.......2007-05-12
very comprehensive, touches on all wine types and their attributes matched with food. Great recipes also. This book should be studied and savored by all who are interested in wines and in how to pair them with
foods.
Solid good advice, good for main or back up book!.......2007-05-02
I wish that I could have the knowledge of this book by osmosis. To read Evan's insightful comments about a wine, then to read suggestions on food pairings with that wine, is a delight. Additionally, Joyce's ample recipes, some simple, some complex, are well chosen, and a strong plus for adventuresome cooks to buy this book.
This was my favorite pairing book (and there's several books out there!) till recently.
When I saw a copy of "What to Drink with What You Eat: The Definitive Guide to Pairing Food with Wine...by Andrew Dornenburg, I realized that Dorenberg had "one-upped" this good text in different ways. One can find the food type, or the dominant spicing or saucing, then work backwards to the wines that are better suited. This is a more intuitive way for most people not well versed in different wines, and is better for me, as I need to match a wine to a fish's sauce more than to the fish. Still it does not diminish my appreciation for Perfect Pairing one bit. Evan Goldstein's Perfect Pairings does acknowledge this importance as well on pages 22-23 and 26-7, however many readers may gloss over this. The book is not as well geared as Dorenberg's in my opinion, for things such as spicy or some Asian or other ethnic foods, your mileage may vary.
Additionally, Dorenberg's book expands one's options with a food to go beyond wine for pairings, to include spirits, beer, etc. This makes more sense, as I just love a good beer with some things (some Asian food, German foods, etc.) that just don't work as well with recommended wines. The drawback (or plus, to some) to Dorenburg's book is that it isn't a text as Goldstein's. Dorenburg's book, after a few brief text chapters, is an extensive alphabetical listing of numerous foods and beverages, followed by their matches, with no explanation present, or felt needed.
I like Goldstein's Perfect Pairings dessert/dessert wine chapter, for example, having a sweet tooth. This section gives a good overview of different wines (late harvest, fortified, sparkling), and then separately talks about tree/stone fruit desserts, creamy and custard desserts, nut and dried-frut desserts, and finally the chocolatee, coffee, and caramel desserts..and recommends appropriate wines for each dessert classification.
Glance through both wine pairing books, and see which book style suits your needs best. I enjoy aspects of both, for different reasons, and appreciate each for it's strengths.
No calorie Count........2007-04-06
I ordered this book and upon receiving it was very excited about pairing wine with food--then I realized there were no calorie counts or other pertinent information with the recipes. Our family is very calorie/fiber conscious and I have vowed I will never buy another cookbook with this information. Therefore I just returned the book. If it ever comes out again with this stuff in it I might reconsider it.
One person's opinion.......2007-03-31
There aren't any vegetarian meals, and I don't eat much on their dining list, so it wasn't very useful to me. Nice hard bound book though.

Customer Reviews:
Great Guidance.......2007-10-08
This is an excellent source if you are new to eating right for your blood type. Handy food charts identify which foods are beneficial, neutral or bad for your body. Also, there are suggested 30 day menus plans as well as suggestions about exercise plans for each blood type. Advice is practical such as fresh veggies are best but if cannot buy fresh, buy frozen and not canned...recipes are simple and turn out delicious...they range from meats to pasta/pizza, soups, salads, dressings/sauces,frittatas, to snacks, treats and munchies. If you have bought Dr. D'Adamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type", this companion book, "Cook Right For Your Type" is a must.
Great book.......2007-07-12
I am really enjoying this book, its helpful because not everyone in my family has the same blood type. This book is easy to use. My only grip about it is that sometimes on the thirty day meal plans, the recipes are not listed in the book. I also do not like the fact that on the meal plans they do not have the page numbers on where to find the recipes. Other than that I really enjoy the eating right for you type books and highly recommend them to everyone.
Eat Right 4 Your Type.......2007-05-26
Intriguing book, very well written, holds your interest. Everything explained so that you can understand it. Borrowed it from a relative and then bought it for myself to refer to and read again. Bought one for my son, too. Am reccommending to people I work with.
blood type diet.......2007-05-13
If you buy into the possibilities, it can be beneficial. Both my husband and I have felt better since trying to follow this. I can't say any real weight loss, but definitely feel much better!
good guide.......2007-04-11
This cookbook gives a lot of ideas for cooking by blood type. I have not read the original book but if i had to choose between the two, this book gives plenty of tools to get started.

WONDERFUL.......2007-10-10
As always, Suzanne Somers has a fantastic cookbook with delicious recipes. Her diet is so easy to follow and the foods are so satisfying. It is a method easy to apply to daily living with minimal rules. Have lost the weight I wanted and am already on Level 2. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Terrific.......2007-05-28
All of Suzanne Somers' books are excellent. This has the easiest recipes. I love to eat without counting calories or portion sizes. I eat till I am full. I have lost 15 lbs in two weeks while eating delicious real food.
I recommend you purchase ALL of Suzanne's books. Each one has different recipes and the forwards are different also. The Forward to GET SKINNY is the best. GET SKINNY IS A MUST. All of Suzanne's books are a MUST. For the first time in my life I have hope that I will be SKINNY and HEALTHY one day.
Great!.......2005-09-29
The book was in great condition, better than expected, it looked brand new. Fast shipping as well. Thanks
I was surprised that this is such a good book.......2004-06-28
When I see Suzanne Somers I just see Chrissy from Three's Company and all that snorting and dumb blonde-ing! I never paid any attention to any of the Suzanne Somers books because I figured this was just another celebrity attaching their persona to something. My library happened to have this on the shelf and since I had some time to kill while waiting for my daughter to pick out her books I decided to flip through the recipe section since I knew it was a low carb type of diet and I do atkins. I was very interested at what I saw so I checked it out. I have been totally shocked at how easy and terrific her ideas are and in fact her philosophy is quite interesting too. I am really impressed. I have a totally different viewpoint now of Suzanne Somers. I love this recipe book so much I had to buy it so I"d have a copy.
Great book, great recipes!!.......2004-06-07
My husband & I just started the South Beach diet. Since Somersizing is a very similar concept (similar to Atkins too), I thought I'd check out these recipes. The book explains the concept of cutting out sugar & sugar forming carbohydrates (anything containing white flour). I looked into the other somersizing books & this one really has the best recipes. So far I've only tried a few & they were very delicious. The cream cheese pancakes & balsamic dijon chicken are yummy. I also bought Somersweet, some of the recipes call for it, but you can use Splenda or other sweeteners instead. All of the recipes in this book are appealing as well as healthy. And they are fast & easy to make.

Customer Reviews:
Not for use with smokers.......2007-09-13
If you've got no other cooks illustrated books and want to know only about grilling, this isn't a bad purchase. If you have the New Best recipes, save your money as there is too much overlap. And if you don't have either, I'd recommend getting the new Best recipes as it covers many more topics. This book is geared to grilling, or how to use your grill as a poor substitution for a smoker.
Gas vs. Charcoal.......2007-07-21
I looked at dozens of books before settling on this one. I was good at gas grilling but now am in to charcoal. It's different and I hate to waste good food because I prepared it improperly. This practical guide gives me detailed technique instructions. Most other publications focus on recipes, and this one has recipes, but it focuses on the cooking process. There are also comparisons of gas vs. charcoal which was very useful for me.
Best Grill Cookbook out there.......2007-06-27
I just purchased a new grill and several grill cookbooks. This is by far the BEST.
Cook's Illustrated does it again..........2007-05-29
I bought this for my boyfriend's birthday because he is a budding grill master. Although we haven't used any of the recipes from it yet, I've been very impressed with the depth of description of the basics and techniques for different types of food.
I was a fan of Cook's Illustrated products prior, but this book has given me incentive to collect more of their cookbooks.
Tells you what you need to know to do it right.......2007-03-25
I have many cookbooks and am starting to weed them out. This is one of several I will keep. That and other Cook's publications. What I like is they explain what works, what does not, and why. One example: after brining thick pork chops as they suggested they have been the best I have ever done. I like this book so well I have given it to a good friend and neighbor who, like me, uses his BBQ often.
Try it, you will like it.

Book Description
This book provides a complete, comprehensive overview of the food and beverage industry's cost control methods and how they are applied within profitable, successful food-service establishments. It presents useful and important guidelines for assessing, interpreting and planning food and beverage operations, as well as financial information that will help owners, operators and managers minimize expenditures and improve profits. Unique coverage of issues such as "make or buy" decisions, inventory control, forecasting, departmental interaction, how to view markets and customers, and more, give this book a richness and relevance that can truly impact the bottom line.
Book Description
Over the coming years we will need to move from a global culture addicted to cheap, abundant petroleum to a culture of compelled conservation, whether through government directive or market forces. The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook provides useful practical advice for preparing your family and community to make the transition.
This book takes a positive, upbeat, and optimistic view of "the Great Change," promoting the idea that it can be an opportunity to redeem our essential interconnectedness with nature and with each other. The many rifts that have grown up since oil became the world's prime commodity can be mended: between cities and their food sources; the design of the suburban built environment and its car-oriented sprawl; runaway greenhouse warming, clearing of forests and toxification of rivers, oceans, and land. Topics covered include:
- Rebuilding civilization
- Changing your needs
- Water and waste disposal
- Energy and transportation
- Equipment and Tools
- Food storage and First Aid
Also including light-hearted, playful recipes -- some using basic, wholesome foods, some illustrating food growing or preservation, and all emphasizing organic, flavorful and locally grown produce that readily substitute one for another -- this book is about having your catastrophe and eating it too.
Customer Reviews:
A Mind-Opening Treasure Trove.......2007-09-06
I really love this book. It approaches the end of civilization as we know it with a big, humorous, smart smile on its face. It presents such a range of ideas and facts and little-known powerful knowledge, and so much uncommon "common sense" that it manages to make me feel good about the coming mess (the "Great Change"). According to the author, Albert Bates, after the "Crude Awakening," Step 1 is to "Rebuild Civilization." By book's end, you'll reach the 12th step -- "Utopia by Morning." Lots of interesting, eclectic sidebars. Plus, the recipes are really excellent.
Excellent intro level book, full of useful advice.......2007-08-18
This book is great intro to all the issues relating to peak oil and our other looming crisis; water, food, transportation, economics, etc., with hints, tips, sidebars, recipes, quotes, so it's not really heavy going. In a fairly non-apocalyptic way, it covers all sorts of stuff, for example: bug out bags, various alternative fuels, lists of things to stockpile, ecovillages and community, humanure, chart of bean cooking times, a first aid guide. Nothing in a huge amount of depth - it's just one book; but mostly practical and down to earth information, and while I don't agree with everything (he's too optimistic about ethanol, and that compost tea will be anaerobic) on the whole it seems balanced and accurate.
For anyone who's just coming to learn about peak oil, especially in the early panic stages, I particularly recommend this book; there are so many books that will just scare and overwhelm you, while this book has a practical and less we're-all-doomed approach. If you're a peak oil old-timer and have been simplifying your life for a while it is probably all stuff you know already.
A Readers Digest version of the book I was seeking.......2007-05-29
This is a lightweight gloss on an interesting topic. To take just one example, the chapter on food storage does not broach the concept of long-term food storage, which may turn out to be the most important topic of all when surviving a post-petroleum world. Nitrogen purging of containers is not mentioned. CO2 purging is mentioned, but not as a way of stopping oxygen-linked food deterioration, but only as a way of fumigating grains. The need for food-safe containers is mentioned, but an exact discussion of the forms of plastic (HDPE, PP, PETE, LDPE, PVC etc) is not given. The simplest web search gives more information than this book on almost every topic. Another example: a illustration is given of a solar dehydrator, but not the plans to make one, and the diagram of the dehydrator is not even sufficiently labelled so that you'd have some idea of how to make one. Again, turn to the web for proper information. Lastly, people living outside the USA will not be pleased to see everything denominated in inches, Fahrenheit, gallons and pounds. The book is essentially a primer and overview of a lot of topics without any satisfying detail. An appetizer, not a main course, the book is indeed like the "Swiss Army knife" it styles itself as, and like my largely unused Swiss army knife, it's not the tool of choice for any particular need.
Return to pre-industrial society?.......2007-05-19
The author asserts that the world will return to a pre-industrial society as a result of peak oil, and we must be able to grow our own food, as well as be closer to nature.
I fail to see the logic that such a future is the most likely outcome of peak oil.
Terrific, REadable, and NECESSARY for our world.......2007-04-24
The Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and cookbook by Albert Bates is an intriguing and well constructed look at what every citizen in the oil addicted world should know and begin to move toward if any kind of survival is possible when oil is no longer readily available. Bates begins by giving convincing evidence that the availability of plenty of oil and gas is not in the world's future. But the book is not a dooms day end of the world account. After explaining the supply/demand situation for the world relying mainly on oil and gas as the key source of energy, he then goes on to spend most of the book detailing ways in which the average consumer can begin to do things in a daily way that will make everyone less dependent on petroleum as the main energy source. The book details everything from creating one's own energy supplies to food preparation and storage to the way to save in transportation. The margins of each page of the book contains menus of dishes that help to form a more energy efficient approach to cooking. The book is well written with good explanations of approaches the author feels are key to beginning the change to living in a world without abundant petroleum supplies

I know I overeat ... this book has helped me understand.......2007-08-10
why I eat because I've never taken the time to stop and analyze the reasons. It's one thing to say I eat when I'm lonely, stressed, mad, etc. It's absolutely eye-opening to learn how to stop to recognize what's coming and have a plan for getting through the moment. This book has been very helpful to me.

Was this written for morons? It's like "The Secret" scam - another study in the Bloody Obvious. Think about how you feel before you eat - there, I just recapped the entire book and now you don't have to buy it! There are actual people who are in the field for a reason and have the statical and factual information to back up their theories - which make sense! This is written by a nurse who likes to binge on noodle casseroles and finally figured out she was sad. Give me a break - Give us all a break! Overcoming Binge Eating by Christopher Fairburn is the gospel in the field and I've never read anything as impactful as this book. If you're serious about getting control of eating, this is what you need to be reading.
One of the very best losing guides out there.......2007-07-31
I've read many books about losing weight and emotional issues that are interrelated. This one hits the mark perfectly. It's not a book that will tell you what to eat. It's a book that will guide you on a journey of why you overeat and what to do about it. It has very practical suggestions on how to figure out what it is that's causing you to run to food because you feel tired, angry, lonely, depressed, and all the other reasons we've turned to food to solve life problems. It's not about doing therapy. It's about thinking deeply about your own life. I found the author sensible, caring, and very knowledgeable. This is about getting real! This is for adults who are serious. There is something here for everyone. A keeper that I'll refer to many times.
Simple, effective steps!.......2007-07-03
I am amazed how the author's simple insights and effective steps can really change how you feel about and act towards food. Changing eating habits is, perhaps, one of the most difficult things to do because you can't just stop eating - you have to deal with food and issues surrounding food all the time. This book explains how most issues about food and eating are rather universal and that's why the five-step plan can be an effective tool for permanent change. By implementing even just a few of her ideas, eating doesn't have to be a constant emotional struggle. This book is a goldmine of opportunity to finally take the emotional power out of food and place it where it belongs -- in your own hands! Bravo!
*NOT WHAT I EXPECTED*.......2007-05-08
I JUST EXPECTED MORE DIRECT "TELL ME WHAT TO DO". WELL WRITTEN BUT JUST NOT FOR ME.

Charlie Palmer. Thats all you really need to know.......2007-01-28
To the reviewer who commented on fennel and pork belly, all I can say is, go to one of Charlie Palmer's restaurants and then judge him. I've eaten at Aureole several times and each meal was stellar. There is no other word for it.
Don't waste your time.......2007-01-10
Unless you like to eat things that nobody really eats, don't buy this book. I saw this dude on the Today show and thought his book would be a great gift for my wife, but man, was I wrong! I returned it. Fennel and pork belly? Give me a break.
Truly the most "practical" cookbook!.......2006-11-29
Let me preface this by saying that I cook in a very small New York apartment kitchen and a cookbook takes up my oh so valuable counter space. Therefore, it is inevitable that any cookbook I use will end up covered in whatever I am cooking. My friend bought me this book knowing my predicament and I can truly say that it is a godsend. I simply wipe the pages and it is as good as new!
Physical practicality aside, this cookbook is fun to read with really delicous recipes. The book begins with Chef Palmer's personal recommendations for necessary kitchen equipment and then launches into recipes for all occasions and all skills. My husband, an amatuer cook at best, was even able to tackle some of the more challenging recipes with great success. You must try the Carmelized Pear Salad or the Roasted Chicken with Garlic and Rosemary Gnocci. Easy to make and truly delicious.
Overall, a great cookbook in brilliant packaging! A must-have for every kitchen!

Spices made Easy.......2000-05-03
This is an incredible book. It includes encyclopaedic information on all the most common spices and most of the rare ones. Not only does it include a description of their flavour and aroma but of their cooking and medicinal uses as well.
The book starts with the history of spice trade (in a brief review of about 6 pages) and ends with a basic recipe book so that you can put your spice knowledge to work.
I greatly recomend the cinnamon cookies recipe at the end of the book.
As an extra it also contains recipes for mixing spices in order to produce curries, quatre epicees, sambal trassi, nam prik and many other as well.
This is a must for any spice loving kitchen.
Extremely Valuable Cooking Resource.......1997-09-06
Living in an Asian country, this book has been a tremendous help in identifying the huge variety of spices available in local markets. I find the presentation of the different ways the spices are prepared (powdered, whole, dried, fresh etc...) to be most helpful. I really recommend this book!!
Beautiful presentation of facts about spices and seeds........1997-02-03
Informative text, bright, clear photograph of spices and aromatic seeds. Briefly describes their cultivation and uses. An excellant reference on spices from around the world with comments on the history of the spice trade as well as more than one hundred recipes demonstrating their uses

I am a Stay at Home Mom and found many of the tips helpful. It is a little slow and boring at times to just sit and read but it does have many helpful tips and I would still recommend it.
The Personal Search for Contentment in a Materialistic Society.......2005-07-18
Do you sense that life is going by and you're not really living it true to yourself or your personal convictions? If so, you may be suffering from spiritual bankruptcy...While we can't ever free ourselves fully from all of life's demands, we can discover a sense of balance in our lives. Or we can identify ways to shift between the two extremes - finding a time and a place in our lives for contemplation, and then alternating that with other times of busyness and distraction." ~Deborah Taylor-Hough
In order to simplify her life, Deborah Taylor-Hough had to rethink her entire lifestyle. With five children and medical bills that loomed over her, she made some tough decisions that required her to put away her pride and look more realistically at how she intended to survive. Her courage is inspirational and the decisions she made showed that her priorities were her family and her commitment to her belief system.
If you are dealing with a lack of meaning even with great wealth or societal emptiness despite an elegant lifestyle, this book takes a look at survival on the edge of bankruptcy and a search for contentment in a less than materialistic lifestyle.
If you long for a life of contentment, it may be a life of simplified choices and a life where family becomes more important than keeping up with every other family on the block.
While this isn't as far as building your own house or "Walden Pond," it is a realistic view of life and how to avoid falling into debt by taking practical and necessary actions like avoiding the temptations at malls or not watching certain channels on TV.
Deborah Taylor-Hough is a beautiful soul who has written a very practical guide for women who want to find a new balance in their lives. She also gives advice about tripling many recipes and freezing meals for the future (see her cookbooks), like before you give birth to a baby or know you are going to go through a time of stress. There are also recipes for making your own instant coffee mixes and homemade dry onion soup mix. Now I know why one house had closets that were scented with cloves - it keeps away moths.
If you have children you may enjoy the recipes for craft dough, soap crayons and homemade paper crafts. If you want to refresh your laundry or even make your own laundry soap, this author has the recipes. I have used her recipe for Spa Milk Bath, but I also use essential oils. I found that sea salt is relatively inexpensive at a health food store and even the addition of oatmeal in a cheesecloth bag and buttermilk can make a completely wonderful spa experience.
This book encourages you to be happier with less possessions and more quality family time. When you remember your childhood, what are the happy things you remember? I remember running around barefoot, swimming in African rivers and eating lemon meringue pie. I didn't care about the size of our house or the clothes I wore. I remembered the freedom to enjoy life and how my mother taught me to make strawberry jam.
Other great ideas:
Family cookbooks
Debt proofing your holidays
Winter picnics
I loved this idea because it reinforces the ideas that happiness has nothing to do with how much money you earn and it has everything to do with being creative and maximizing the talents you have and rearranging your priorities.

An excellent money-saving tool.......2005-06-03
Readers gain various tips and insights into saving time and money with this book. Various tasks become more simple and less expensive. This book speaks more on how to save money than on how to free yourself from the greed and dependency that it provokes.
What A Helpful book!.......2003-10-29
This a a great book with ideas and time savings for me. The title so describes the book, good choice! I love it!
Simply from the heart.......2003-05-23
I really liked the book, written straight fromn the heart. Though it's relatively not so thick but 'it got a little bit of everything'. The appendix cited a number of recommended resources that are also valuable to know. It made me wish I could be like those people who have attained such comfort through 'simple living'.
