Science + Food = Healthy Kids.......2007-10-05
It's books like this that make me realize organic chemistry really would have been a good class to finish. If I had known then that I would someday have a kid on the spectrum, I would have. This is a fantastic first dive into the science of the gut of ASD kids explaining the hows and whys of the GFCF diet along with lots of other important things like leaky guts and the evils of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. The first half of the book is science class and the second is some great recipes. This is a very important book to own if you're serious about going GFCF - I reference it often. It even includes recipes for holiday dishes like matzo balls and thanksgiving stuffing. My only complaint is the lack of index for the recipes. Other than that, this is a great book!
Let's get Cookin, sort of...........2007-09-25
When we started the GFCF diet for my son I was convinced it would be impossible to find anything GFCF he would like. I liked this book because it had a ton of information about what Gluten and Casein are, however I did not like all the recipes. For those who are not great around the kitchen this is a tough one.
Couldn't live without this book!.......2007-03-10
We have both of these books and I could not live without them. My husband is GF and my 2 yr old is GF/CF (diagnosed on the spectrum) and after being on this diet all of her autistic symptoms went away. I already knew how to cook GF, but this book has given us so many more possibilites to eat normal meals and have fun treats. We made our Christmas cookies from the recipe in here and the icing for them. I recommend these to anyone who needs to eat GF or GF/CF.
Invaluable Reference.......2007-01-18
I bought this book a few years ago and still find it an invaluable reference. After we tried the feingold diet I felt we needed to take it a step further and we went gluten free. The recipies in the book I still find myself opening up to use and sometimes modify, such as substituting brown rice flour for bean flour. Before going on the GF diet, I discovered through a lab test me and my 13 yr old son (PDD now in remission) cannot digest wheat. My 3 1/2 year old I believe avoided any problems or delays by knowledge from this book and our avoiding wheat, milk and additives - gene and stool tests shown he is gluten and milk sensitive as well. Reading Special Diets for Special Kids really helped me suspect this problem in myself and our children which doctors may not have suspected for much longer, as gluten sensitivity is hard to diagnose and often is not found until later in life. I wish I had read this book 13 years ago! I would higly recommend anyone interested in becoming GF to also read Going Against the Grain by Melissa Diane Smith.
A must for the gf/cf diet.......2006-11-17
This book is a must if you are starting the gf/cf diet. It haves the basics of why the diet works and then some great easy recipes that will help you realize how easy it can be to cook gf/cf. My kids especially love the bread recipe and wouldn't let me go back to the pre-made bread they were eating. I would recommend getting this book before you start the diet or while still in the early phase. It will make it so much easier!!!!

Customer Reviews:
it's a MUST have!.......2007-06-28
i used to love my easy bake oven so i couldn't wait to purchase one for my daughter. i was shocked to see the prices on the mixes and thought there had to be some sort of book out there with kid sized oven recipies. THIS ONE IS IT!!! great variety....cute little measuring spoons....stuff kids will actually eat. my daughter is a pickey eater but as long as she can pick a recipe and cook it herself, she'll eat. we even made some recipes up on our own. it even works with the newer ovens that look like the stand up ranges. LOVELY!
Awesome!!.......2007-03-03
What else can you say about a product that gets you and your child involved in an activity together? My son and I had a blast trying out all of the recipes in this cookbook. It also sparked his creativity to invent some of his own! Easy to follow recipes and very accurate cooking times. A must have for Easy Bake Oven owners!!
Good Book for Children.......2007-01-28
This book has many very good recipes in it and is very good and easy for young children to use. I really appreciated getting the little measuring spoons with the book. I am going to buy another book for my other grandchildren.
mommy cookbook!.......2007-01-18
oh man this is a great gift!
as a stay at home dad i spend all day trying to keep my 4 yr old entertained. A friend of mine got her a easybake oven for Christmas. I looked at the food to make and man is it expensive!
someone suggested this book. i can see it saving me a bunch of money. also i am experimenting with recipes i have done myself.
but its great. also the little measuring spoons are really neat.
should come w the oven.......2006-12-07
this is a great book! it shows you how to make mixes at the fraction of the cost with things you have in the kitchen. it gives kids a real chance to be creative. add a bit of this or that.
warning: read the front few pages. someone complained that their pan overflowed because they overfilled the pan. the book does warn you but how full to fill the pans but you have to read the important info page that most people ignore.
i also love the 3 measuring spoons that come w it. i am tempted to keep them for myself. (i said tempted, i didnt actually take them from my kids)

Book Description
The best kid-friendly recipes and guide to the gluten-free milk-free diet for ADHD and Autism.
What it is. Why it works. How to do it.
The Centers for Disease Control reports significant increases in Autism and ADHD - both affecting primarily boys. The CDC estimates that 1 out of 175 children (age 4 to 17) currently have Autism (300,000). Before 1985, Autism occurred in less than 1 out of 2000. ADHD is much more common in that it affects 4.4 million U.S. children (age 4 to 17).
Common to both of these conditions is the negative impact of certain foods - especially milk products and glutens such as wheat(and to a lesser degree - soy and corn.) One of the challenges that parents face is coping with children who have picky appetites and crave the very foods that affect their behavior, focus and development. The other challenge is finding ways to get their children to eat healthy foods and improve their nutritional status.
The uniqueness of this book is that it not only provides gluten-free milk-free substitutes and recipes, it provides successful suggestions for feeding the picky eater. The authors share details about just how and why the diet works. The specialty ingredients are explained and extensive sources provided. There are also testimonials from the parents and from the children themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, average cookbook.......2007-10-05
This is a great primer on the science behind the GFCF diet and several other alternative diets for kids on the spectrum. I learned a tremendous amount from it and even identified an enzyme deficiency in my own child because of it. However, the cookbook portion leaves a bit to be desired from my perspective. I was looking for something to help me with feeding a 2 1/2 year old and this is most definitely not geared towards toddlers. Perhaps it would be good for feeding a family with middle-schoolers or older, but for the little ones, there is surprisingly little. Additionally, some of the items that are labeled in it as "soy-free" call for items that have soy in them. I don't regret buying it because I'm sure someday I'll end up using the recipes, but I still have yet to find a toddler-friendly GFCF cookbook.
confuso.......2007-10-01
Muchas veces me siento confundido cuando leo las recetas. No son "friendly reading" tengo que buscar conversiones de gramos a lbs.
Great help!!.......2007-08-26
This book really helped me to slowly implement this diet change with recipes that actually taste good to all of my kids!! And,my 9-year old autistic son appears more focused, attentive and responds on topic to multiple questions.
Food and Philosophy - Great book.......2007-06-04
I love this book, not only because the recipes are great and easy to follow, but it gives you the reasons why certain foods are helpful and healthy. That has helped me to spin-off my own recipes and make me think that I know how to cook again. My whole family sat down to a meal together (including one daughter with PDD, one with ADHD and a French gourmet husband) and we all ate virtually the same thing for the first time in five years. Buy the book.
Perhaps it should be 5 stars..........2007-06-01
...but one of the cookie recipes called for Oat flour -- That's one of the forbidden, gluten-containing grains! Must be a typo.
Otherwise, this book is wonderful. Packed with the latest information, substitution rules, and a lot of recipes. The only recipe I've tried is Cinnamon Pancakes and they were fabulous. Although I'm a pretty good cook and can make up things pretty well, I've found that with gfcf baking it's best to follow a recipe and not improvise. With a lot of searching on the 'net you can find other recipes and information, but this book is really informative. And incidentally, the diet appears to be working -- my autistic son is feeling better and acting more like a normal 3-year-old after just 1 week, and I have to admit to feeling more clear-headed and attentive. Though it's a little tough getting started, it has been well worth the inconvenience. So if your child is ADHD or autistic, get this book, and if possible, transition your whole family to the diet. It can't hurt and is very likely to help.

basic recipe book.......2007-10-05
Waste of money. Every day food is fairly easily modified. But the cookies, bread and other treats. . . The only recipes I tried (2) were both duds. There are many superior alternative recipes online to be found from blogs and even the likes of recipezaar.
Love this book.......2007-08-12
The recipes in this book are easy and my son love the ones I have tried so far. The best cookbook I have come by for wheat free cooking.
Terrific cookbook for celiac kids or adults.......2007-05-06
My daughter was diagnosed in Sept 2006 and she has pretty much eaten the same things over and over-fruits, vegetables and meats but since we got this cookbook (this week) we have prepared corndogs- just like the ones at the fair ( they may not look like the ones at the fair but they sure do taste like it), tortillas and lemon bars. I finally feel like she is getting some variety in her diet!!! We can't wait to try the others we have marked. The best thing is there are over 150 recipes in the book.
Great cookbook for Celiac Disease.......2007-04-07
I borrowed this cookbook from the library first. I like it so much I bought it online. Best bread and chocolate chip cookies (gluten free) I have ever made.
Enjoyed it.......2007-02-06
I have enjoyed making some of these recipes. They have been really tasty and my kids don't know that their dinner is made with "Mom's special food".

A Perfect Fit for a Niche Market.......2003-11-08
In "Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" the authors dedicate the first two chapters to providing a basic understanding of diabetes. The first chapter discusses diabetes with a slant toward helping a child understand it. The second one is from the perspective of what the adult parent needs to know.
The book contains simple recipes rated on a one, two, or three hand system with one being the easiest and three being the hardest. Each recipe provides information on serving size, exchanges, calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates. Some are just easy recipes that a child can do; others have been adapted to make it more fun for children. For example, an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich becomes a toasted cheese person.
"Cooking Up Fun for Kids with Diabetes" is a fun book of recipes and food related crafts for any child and a recommended read.
Answer to a Mom's Prayer.......2003-07-28
I was delighted to read about this cookbook in my local newspaper and ran out to buy a copy right away. My eleven year old daughter was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so this book about nutrition/healthy cooking is an answer to my prayers. In addition to the fun and great-tasting recipes with complete nutrition information, there are clear explanations about the type 1 and type 2 diabetes conditions and even some fun "non-food" projects. My daughter and I spent a weekend afternoon in the kitchen making Fruit Filled Quesadillas- messy, but fun!

Well-rounded cookbook.......2007-09-28
I bought this cookbook for a family with a vegetarian mother. I really enjoyed that there were a wide range of recipes were/could be meatless. It had a much better format than most of the kids' cookbooks I looked at, and I appreciate that it uses fresh whole foods rather than assembling convenience or pre-packaged products. I am probably going to purchase one for our family as well.
Not your average kid cook book........2007-01-11
I was happy to see this was money well spent. This isn't little snack foods for kids to make for kids,(ie. "ants on a log"). There is a great variety of snacks, meals, dessert, ect. in this cook book that can feed the family. If you have read Family Fun magazine then you know the format for their recipes. It neatly points out what kids can do and when adults should help out. Nice hardcover with spiral. All ages.
Cooking with kids.......2007-01-10
I purchased two of these cookbooks for each of my two granddaughters. They both have already made many recipes and love the book...so do I. I recommend this HIGHLY to anyone who wants to teach their children/grandchildren a fun way to learn to cook.

Cook Up Some Family Fun.......2002-07-30
This is such a great idea! This book uses popular children's literature and provides an activity and a recipe to go along with the story. The activites are interesting and easy to do (i.e. they usually require objects or ingredients that one has around the house) and the recipies are really quite tasty. What a great way to enhance the reading experience of a favorite book. This books is great family fun. One small note, I would have liked to see suggested age levels for each title since I am not familiar with every book included in this activity guide.

Great Recipes.......2007-05-14
This cook book is great, the recipes are easy and the food is appealing to all ages. The only problem was that I had a hard time finding one of her staples: Jello cook & serve sugar free vanilla pudding. Then low and behold, I found out that amazon stocks the pudding and thousands of other packaged ingredients. Free shipping right to my front door, who can ask for more?
Healthy Recipes For Children.......2005-03-10
Need a cookbook that helps you create healthier more appealing meals for your children? Want to know how to create meals from packages off the grocer's shelf? Then Joanna Lund's "Cooking Healthy With The Kids in Mind" is perfect for you!
Joanna M. Lund was once close to 300 pounds. She was tired of diets that would initially help, but could not keep the wait off. She developed Healthy Exchanges. This process helped her lose 130 pounds! She is the author of numerous bestselling Healthy Exchanges cookbooks.
She has been in national publications such as People and the New York Times. She has made hundreds of appearances on radio and television, including the shopping station, QVC, where she has been on regularly for 10 years! She is a speaker on weight-loss, diabetic and cardiac support groups. She runs the Healthy Exchanges business and publishes the Healthy Exchanges newsletter.
The Healthy Exchanges program gives you examples of serving sizes needed from each group each day to live a healthy life. For example, protein, breads, fruit, skim milk, vegetables, fats, free foods (herbs, spices, mustard etc.), optional calories (sugar-free gelatin, fat-free mayonnaise etc.) and sliders (an extra 80 calories that can be used in any group)!
This cookbook also gives you tips on substitutions, needed pantry items and equipment for your kitchen. She explains cooking terms she uses in this book, how to shop for healthy food, as well as a section on sodium, fat and processed foods.
Each recipe gives you the nutritional information for each serving, as well as the diabetic exchanges, and Joanna's Healthy Exchanges.
This cookbook is very easy-to-read. The recipes are easy-to-prepare. This book is perfect for someone who is tired of taking the guess-work out of healthy eating. The recipes are not time-consuming either.
This book is packed with over 200 recipes. The recipe chapters included in this book are: Get-Out-Of-Bed Breakfasts, Super-Super Soups (and Sandwiches, too), Veggies and Salads, Fill-'Em-Up Main Dishes, Delicious Desserts for Good Girls and Boys, Scrumptious Snacktimes, Special Occasion Spectaculars and The Tiny-Tot Top Ten.
Cherry Almond Tarts
Reprinted with permission.
This is my version of a healthy cherry cheesecake-in-a-cup, one I just know your family will love. If you haven't got a biscuit cutter, you can use a small glass to cut out the curcles of dough.
Serves 8 (2 each)
1 Pillsbury refrigerated unbaked 9-inch piecrust
1 (4-serving) package JELL-O sugar-free vanilla cook-and-serve pudding mix
1 (4-serving) package JELL-O sugar-free cherry gelatin
2 cups (one 16-ounce can) tart red cherries, packed in water, drained, and 1/2 cup liquid reserved
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 tablespoons (1/2 ounce) slivered almonds
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Unfold piecrust. Using a (2 1/2- inch) biscuit cutter, cut 12 circles. Press dough scraps together and cut 4 more circles, for a total of 16 circles. Place pastry into 16 miniature muffin cups. Press into the cups to form shells. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding, dry gelatin, reserved cherry liquid, and water. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring often. Remove from heat. Stir in the cherries and almond extract. Evenly spoon mixture into prepared pastry shells. Sprinkle with about 1/4 teaspoon almonds over top of each. Bake for 18 - 22 minutes. Place pans on a wire rack and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Carefull remove tarts from pans and allow to cool completely.
In this fast-paced society, where time is of the essence, Joanna Lund has made life easier by helping create new healthy recipes for not only us, but also our children.
Too many items unavailable to Canadians!.......2004-12-16
I was disapointed when I got this book..not by the recipes (they seem tasty, and healthy enough) but by the products used in the recipes.
I am a canadian, and we cannot get a lot of the low fat/ no fat items that are listed in the recipes, also many of the brands that are used (recommended) are not available here. I had to go through each recipe, and figure out substitutes...and who knows if the recipes are as healthy or taste the same way as they were intended?? It took too much time, and effort to have to change everything...I was looking for a quick healthy recipe alternative.
I want a quick healthy cookbook geared at kids that use basic products and basic brands that we can get here!
A good one that I found if you are a Canadian is: Quick meals for healthy kids and busy parents ISBN# 1565610644, it is not by Candian authors...but it has everyday items that we can get here...try it first.
Excellent Choices for Picky Eaters!!!.......2004-08-01
I have three children under the age of 7, and they would eat practically all of these recipes! There are some processed foods in the ingredients, but for todays family I think that's what a lot of us are looking for. JoAnna explains in the beginning of her book (in case some of the reviewers missed it) that this cookbook may not be for everyone. Hot dogs are not for every family, but tofu isn't for mine! She did an excellent job breaking everything down for families, and you can tell she has a true desire for families to be healthy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I like cookbooks the best with pictures to give an idea of what the foods are like. Other than that, it was great!
These recipes are NOT healthy.......2001-01-04
I was so disappointed when I received this book. The title is so misleading. These recipes are NOT a healthy way to eat. Too much processed and can foods are used here. (hot dogs, processed cheese, Yuck) Where did this author get the idea that these recipes are a healthy way for children or anyone for that matter to eat?? Goodness, no wonder why America is so overweight. There is a star rating on reviews, it truly doesn't even deserve the one star.
