Book Description
Most people believe that sucralose (Splenda) is a perfectly safe artificial sweetener. Big business and the FDA have fostered that dangerous misconception. The truth is Splenda is by no means safe; and the same is true for many of the other artificial sweeteners being marketed today. Dr. Joseph Mercola---supported by extensive studies and research---exposes the fact that Splenda actually contributes to a host of serious diseases. Sweet Deception will lay out how the FDA really works for big food companies and should not be trusted when it comes to your health.

Rips the lid right off of the cover-ups for Spenda and Nutra-Sweet. A MUST READ if you have any concern about your long-term health!!
The dangers of artificial sweeteners.......2007-06-24
If you are looking for a book that will educate you on the dangers of Sweet and Low, NutraSweet , and Splenda look no further, this book lays out all known and proven dangers for these sweeteners. The reason they are free of all calories in there pure form is that they are not carbohydrates or food at all, they are chemicals. There chemical names are saccharine, aspartame, and sucralose. They are made through chemistry by binding molecules to create new chemicals. NutraSweet is 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspartic acid, and 10% wood alcohol (which your body metabolizes as formaldehyde). Splenda is made from chemically altering the sucrose molecule by chlorinating it which changes the molecule from a fructo-glucose molecule into a fructo-galactose molecule and puts it the insecticide family of organochlorines. Splenda is the only organochlorine that is consumed, it was discovered in a lab during an experiment with new insecticides. It is in the same chemical class as DDT and PCBs. The author contends that the FDA approves these harmful chemicals for general use due to its conflicts of interest with the food industry. The author recommends eating a diet of as much whole foods as possible and avoiding artificial sweeteners and sugar. Stevia was recommended as a natural sweetener. I have been using stevia for years and love it. This book is packed with easy to understand information that will change your eating habits. I highly recommend.
Pre-reading review.......2007-06-01
Hi! I'm already skeptical about this book based on some of the reviews I've read. I subscribe to the "Nutrition Action Newsletter", produced by folks who are very uptight about their food ("Center For Science in the Public Interest"), I think they were the ones who badgered the FDA to mandate ingredient lists and nutritional information on all food labels, then got them to include saturated fats as well. To me, they see their job as sorting out fact from fiction, truth from false claims, and so on. Although they see problems with many sweeteners, so far they haven't come across any studies that correctly demonize Splenda. In fact, they've debunked Dr. Mercola's claims in the past (one of which is where Mercola says if you microwave your food "you're zapping away nutrients and risking your health")... CSPI counters with its info: microwaving retains more nutrients than other forms of cooking if you don't use a lot of water and don't overcook your food. and so on.
The FDA has sent warning letters to Dr. Mercola in the last two years for promoting products on his website that make unproven claims about their healthful benefits. It's not surprising that the writer of a whistle-blowing book has a plethora of literature and products he'd promoting.
I'm not demonizing Mercola, nor am I defending the FDA. I suspect there is a lot of excellent info in Mercola's book, and I suspect that much is wrong with the FDA.
In terms of a book about food that has no agenda (i.e., getting you to buy anything the author is selling, other than the book itself) and doesn't exactly offer any real solutions, but really opens the lid on how americans eat, I really recommend Michael Pollen's "The Omnivore's Dilemma". The book has its flaws but really makes you think about where your food is coming from. And not just your sweets! It is indeed time for folks to wake up and put some thought into what they're putting into their bodies.
Better alternatives to Splenda, NutraSweet,.......2007-03-19
There are better options to sweetness than Splenda, NutraSweet, and the FDA May indeed, Be Hazardous to Your Health...
Sweet Deceptions.......2007-03-08
I read this book as long as I could stand it - about 2/3rds. I already knew that it said all artificial sweeteners, as well as sugar, are not good for your health. It was a recitation of many, many studies and I was personally very bored with it. Previously I had read a lot internet articles on the subject and did not learn anything new from the book. But if a person was new to the idea of "sweet poison" it could be very informative.
Book Description
THE definitive book on complications from the use of "diet" products. It details two decades of extensive corporate-neutral research involving 1200 victims in the author's database.

Very good summation of the Aspartame problem.......2005-12-16
Dr. Roberts does an excellent job of summarizing the neurological and physiological effects of chronic aspartame consumption using observations from his years of medical practice as an internist as well as information obtained from other physicians and from a detailed questionnaire he sent out to a large population group. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is widely used in 'diet' soda pop as well as chewing gum, instant iced tea, jello mixes, and other food products. The weakest part of the book is probably where it attempts to identify possible mechanisms for the neurological effects of Aspartame since research is still in the early stages on WHY Aspartame has some of the negative neurological effects that are observed. Understandably, though, Dr. Roberts, feels compelled to attempt to address that question and points to several possibilities including the toxicity of aspartame metabolites such as methanol, the increased neurotoxicity of optical stereoisomers produced during storage at elevated temperatures, phenylalanine vulnerability of the 1 in 50 people who are recessive carriers of the gene for PKU disease, artificial imbalanced consumption of amino acids, interaction with neurotransmitter levels in the body, etc. Some of these are the objects of current research projects but knowledge on pathways and mechanisms is still in the early stage of discovery.
Dr. Roberts clinical observations of aspartame-triggered illness are excellent and speak to his experience and skill as a physician. This book is required reading for anyone who is interested in the physical manifestations of aspartame-caused illness.
An Exceptional Source of enlightenment.......2001-10-14
We have Dr. Robert's book before us and are often quoting from it as we are asked questions regarding the toxicity of the aspartame sweetener. He gives more than a thousand examples of how people are made ill by this poison. These case studies are the reactions of people whose lives and health have been affected by aspartame. It's a great source book to own and worth every penny for it's magnificant 1000 plus pages in full A4 size.
Book Description
Millions of dieters using chemical sweeteners will be shocked by firefighter Janet Starr Hull's story. Diagnosed with a deadly case of Grave's Disease after she collapsed on the job, Hull was told she would die. Searching for the cause of her illness, Hull discovered that the chemical sweetener aspartame found in Nutrasweet was to blame.

It's really true!.......2007-03-16
I changed over to diet Coke and diet Dr. Pepper about a year ago to try and loose weight.
At first I continued to loose weight and all was well...
But then my weight loss stopped, and I started having a hard time concentrating. I thought I was just getting older when I started having trouble seeing at night. Then I noticed I started dropping things and bumping into walls etc. And I started having headaches.
I didn't think it could have anything to do with the aspartame in the soft drinks I was consuming even though I was up to about two liters of soda a day.
Then I talked with our Pastors wife who had almost died from aspartame poisioning and she said you need to stop right away.
I felt really bad the first two days of not drinking or consuming any aspartame products. Plus I wasn't consuming any cafeeine either. I was going to bed and sleeping for 16 hours.
But in the next three days I started feeling clearer headed and just better all around. My night vision is coming back every day and I no longer drop things.
Must Read Book!.......2007-03-08
Everyone should read this book and understand the dangers of aspertame. It is far worse than people realize. I have stopped using any foods or drinks with it in, and I know I feel better, and have less headaches. A book for everyone!
Very helpful, worth the read........2006-08-03
I was having thryoid problems after my second daughter was born. I was drinking Diet Dr. Pepper for an energy boost every day. This book caught my attention because of the author's thryoid disfunction. I read the book and stopped using aspartame.
My hair is no longer falling out, and my engergy and thryoid levels are back to normal.
My 3 year old daughter is epileptic, and several months before reading this book her seizures took a sudden turn for the worst. She started having 15-30 seizures a day, and even had 2 grand mal seizures. I was terrified by the increase in seizure activity and wondered what had caused the change.
Reading about how aspartame can cause seizures/grand mal seizures, I checked the vitamins I was giving my daughter.
Because it was fall, and I wanted her to be healthy during cold and flu season,I had started giving her several fruit flavored vitamin c chewables and 1 chewable multi vitamin. Checking the labels I discovered they all had aspartame as an ingredient.
It was hardly coincidence when I realized the increase in seizures was around the same time I started these vitamins. I threw out both bottles. It has been 6 months and my daughter has not had another grand mal seizure, and her seizures dropped from 15-30 a day down to 0-3 on a typical day. I was also able to drop 2 of her 3 seizure medications.
Aspartame is very dangerous, I had no idea.
Aspartame: The Poison They Don't Want You To Know About.......2006-01-07
For the past 2 years or so I had been feeling worse and worse as time went on. Headaches, neurological symptoms such as losing feeling in my arm and face, and the scariest of all, I was having trouble thinking straight. I really was beginning to feel like a different person and there were times that I felt like I was going insane.
Am I exaggerating?? I really wish I was, but sadly that was not the case. After speaking with my primary care doctor several times and having had tests done, I noticed that my symptoms improved at times, but nothing significant. I tried to put my finger on what the problem was, and one day while doing a search online, I found that some people who chewed Orbit gum were complaining of symptoms similar to mine. I had been chewing sugarless gum for years, and I never thought twice that what I was chewing could be hurting my body, potentially for the long term. After reading more, I immediately stopped using all products with aspartame/Nutrasweet/Equal and within a few short weeks I started feeling better.
During my initial research regarding the link between aspartame and the symptoms I was experiencing, I stumbled upon the book "Sweet Poison" by Janet Starr Hull, the story of how she found out that aspartame was the cause of her very own health problems and her research behind how this original ulcer drug got into nearly every type of food we eat every day.
Hull's story is very interesting, and anyone that wants to find out more about the story of how aspartame got into the United States food supply would be able to probably pick some bit of relevant information from this text, but I would be remiss if I didn't point out how sloppy the writing is. It's really a shame, because you get the point that the author really does care about educating the masses, but she would have been so better off if she had more people edit this book before it was published.
My favorite parts of this book relate to the story of the shady way in which aspartame got on the shelves of supermarkets around the country and how it probably should have been stopped long, long ago. It's just a sad realization that the corporations control America and it's not a new trend. The original fights to get aspartame FDA approved date back to the 1970s, and through loopholes and political tricks that is exactly what happened in the 1980s.
If you want to learn more about the history of aspartame and the story of an individual that had an adverse reaction to this drug, this is a nice read but it's very sloppy. Sometimes you will get done reading a paragraph and just say to yourself that the writing is outright POOR.
Some people will read this book and just say it's a bunch of hogwash and they have never had a bad reaction to a diet soda, but I can tell you from personal experience that this chemical CAN cause major problems so buyer beware.
In the battle between calories and chemicals, I'll take the calories, at least I can pronounce sugar more easily than many of the chemicals you see when you turn the label over of far too many foods that are purchased every single day.
*** RECOMMENDED
Here's a thought..........2005-10-24
Hmmmm- just as a wild off the cuff idea before you get too wrapped up in the author's opinions, why not just drink water? I haven't heard of too many people becoming ill from it - unless they're drowning, of course.

Very enlightening!.......2007-02-22
I've been looking for a book like this. I've been wondering what all those obviously questionalble ingredients on my food labels are. I knew they were not good, but this book is changing my eating habits completely, not to mention my makeup and anything else I put on my skin. It doesn't have every chemical, but I've realized it would take a volume of books to fit them all in. Everyone should look into this book to get an idea of the POISONS that we eat and use every day. It's no wonder so many people are sick and have no idea why. Baby products, makeup and most food products on the store shelf are loaded with garbage that should never have been approved by the FDA. But we all know why they're approved$.
Book Description
Just how safe is the artificial sweetener aspartame (more commonly known as NutraSweet), currently used in some 6000 products and consumed by hundreds of millions of people? You may be surprised to learn that a number of medical problems are likely to be adverse reactions to products containing aspartame. Author HJ Roberts, MD, a board-certified internist with impressive credentials, first became suspicious of aspartame when he encountered an increasing number of patients with a wide variety of symptoms, such as headaches, mood swings, memory loss, dizziness, depression, insomnia, diarrhea and anxiety, among others. Based on hundreds of case studies, Roberts concluded that these unexplained symptoms were actually reactions to products containing aspartame. The book not only looks at the clinical picture of aspartame, but also describes how it received FDA approval without undergoing testing in humans, and how the United States Senate allowed this well-financed chemical additive to sail through the official government channels.

Interesting book.......2005-09-09
However, since Equal and Nutrasweet became widely available -- I recall the products coming on the market around 1984 -- it's practically been a food group for me. If I were going to drop dead, I think I'd have done it by now.
I notice that Splenda is being substituted for Nutrasweet in a lot of the products I've been buying for years. Twenty years down the road, I'll probably be reading about the ways Splenda kills people. Whatever.
It is NOT safe........2005-03-08
A MUST READ BOOK.
I read this book many years ago, long before they had to start putting all the warning labels on every product now containing Aspartame.
Donald Rumsfeld, left government to become CEO of Searle and his job was to put Aspartame in just about every food and drink on the planet.
Now, Searle is no longer the company that is listed on NutraSweet and Equal packets, but now the company on those products is listed as MONSANTO. Yes that IS the same company responsible for producing "agent orange"
The reason there are so many new illnesses and diseases that we never had before the early 80s when Aspartame was first put into all our drinks and food, is because of Aspartame.
As this book is several years old, it does not mention the dangers of Acesulfame-K or Sucralose, the NEW stuff they are putting in food and drinks as people are becoming aware of the dangers of Aspartame and trying to avoid it!
Even the name Sucralose (brand name is Splenda) is deceptively close in spelling to "sucrose" which is just natural sugar. This way, when you read through the ingredients at the store, you might confuse Sucralose for Sucrose. Clever, huh?
Even regular products that are NOT labeled as "sugar free" now contain one or all of these chemicals! Look at REGULAR SUGAR gum and see how Aspartame, Sucralose and Ace-K are in them now!
It is getting ridiculous.
If you want a SAFE NATURAL alternative to sugar, then try STEVIA.
Don't believe everything you hear.......2004-05-27
In this age of free press, email chain letters, and sensationalized media stories, people are willing to believe almost anything these days. If you do your own research on aspartame, you'll find that it is much more natural than you think. It is made up of two amino acids which naturally occur in protein, esterified with methanol (which by the way is found naturally in most fruits and vegetables - a cup of tomato juice contains more methanol than a cup of diet coke). The governments of Canada and the US have considered aspartame safe for years. Aspartame is endorsed by the American Diabetic Association, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society, to name a few.
The so-called symptoms associated with "aspartame poisoning" mimic a multitude of other conditions, including most autoimmune conditions like thyroid disease, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc; as well as other conditions such as MVP. Many of these conditions are not widely diagnosed due to a lack of understanding by many physicians, not to mention the vagueness of symptoms.
On a personal note, I have been a long time headache sufferer. I stopped using aspartame for 6 months with absolutely no improvement in symptoms.
someone who did undergraduate research on aspartame at ucla.......2004-05-06
Arthur R. Rolla, M.D. of Harvard Medical School was so frustrated by the claims of H.J. Roberts that he published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine to debunk the aspartame rumors. Rolla immediately considers the professional background of Roberts- an internist from West Palm Beach, Florida. This information already places Rolla of Harvard University at a much higher standing than Roberts. Rolla reveals Roberts became suspicious of his patient's complaints and began to associate them with aspartame due to simple correlation. With this theory in mind, Roberts prepared a questionnaire for his patients which was later distributed to people across the country. Roberts received reports of headache, dizziness, fatigue, memory loss, mood swings, insomnia, and personality reports. Instead of looking for other possible explanations, Roberts immediately assumed such health problems were caused by aspartame. Rolla states that when frequent symptoms are matched with the use of a widely consumed product, a chance association is likely. However, this chance correlation does not imply causation. In order to gain any certifiable evidence, Roberts should have sent out questionnaires to a control group not taking aspartame and compared their complaints to the aspartame groups. Rolla also criticizes Roberts for asking patients who were already convinced aspartame was the cause of their illness to halt aspartame intake. The results of the symptom cessation occurring with the halting of aspartame use are merely due to a counterplacebo effect. Rolla's premier complaint against Roberts' research is that Roberts disregarded the scientific method in testing his hypothesis, but presented it as scientific fact despite lacking previous peer review. Rolla regards Roberts' work as a clear abuse of the freedom of the press as it causes unnecessary public alarm and distrust of the government (FDA).
In the case of H.J. Roberts' work, his primary monetary motive is obvious. By looking at the many people who have purchased his work from Amazon.com, one can see the immediate profitability of the aspartame scare. Beyond books sales, it can be inferred that Roberts' secondary motive is recognition. Rolla reveals Roberts self-portrayal as a lone crusader against industry, government, and the medical establishment as entirely self-serving.
An Important Warning.......2003-12-31
I was warned by my OB not to use aspartame when we were trying to conceive; fortunately I'd already read this book and have done everything I can to avoid aspartame since. I have a friend would black out and was eventually diagnosed with "panic attacks" at Scripps; it turned out to be aspartame poisoning. Since she's steered clear of this, the attacks disappeared. Read the book and heed the doctor's advice! You wouldn't drink wood alcohol, would you? It's part of the aspartame molecule.

Must reading for anyone who uses a lot of aspartame.......2001-02-12
While there isn't a lot of overwhelming published evidence that aspartame is horribly bad for you, there is a lot of empirical evidence from many people that it can cause headaches, temporary memory loss and other sypmtoms. Just like MSG, many clinical studies have been done to show that it DOESN'T have any effect, but a negative study proves only that THAT study revealed nothing. However, I know several people who, when they eat these substances unawares, get plenty sick. So it can't be all imagination.
Along with Russell Blaylock's book Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills, this book is very useful to read for you to decide if you want to consume this artificial sweetner. There is even some evidence afloat that substituting diet sweetners doesn't actually lead to any appreciable weight loss, and that the mere taste of sweetness is interpreted by the brain as having EATEN a real sweet, and weight gain can occur. There are other concerns that aspartame and MSG have neurological effects.
Aspartame has crept into so many commercially prepared foods; even foods with sucrose sometimes have added aspartame. It's also found in vitamin drinks, gums and many other products. In fact it is getting darn hard to avoid.
In any case, there are fine alternatives to aspartame: if you are diabetic, you of course must limit carbohydrates, especially sweets. If you just substituting something for sugar because you are dieting, try substituting stevia extract (a sweet tasting herb found in some healthfood stores) or using a small amount of raw sugar or honey and just limiting your sweet intake. The less sweets you eat, the less you'll want, and you'll start to notice and enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits and even vegetables.
If you read this book, you'll also get a lot out of Blaylock's book on Excitotoxins. Both are essential reading to anyone who is concerned about their diet.

Reading this book informed me about the health problems associated with aspartame. Most people conclude that headaches are the only side effect, but there are many more immediate and longer lasting effects. If you or anyone you love is suffering from unexplanable health problems, read this book and become informed about the real dangers that come with ingesting aspartame.

If you are in the least bit concerned with your health and you ingest artifical sweeteners, youhave to read this book. The author clearly knows what he's talking about and makes a very strong case against using Aspartame
