Terrific cookbook!.......2007-09-09
I checked this book out from my library and quickly realized that I had to have this book! The recipes all sound delicious and easy to prepare. The how-to sections on making bread and choosing cuts of meat are very helpful. You can't go wrong with this book!

Hardly counts as cooking.......2007-09-07
Nearly every recipe relies heavily on canned soup, processed cheese, bottled sauce, etc. Not my idea of home cooking. I'm donating this one to the library book sale.
Good Cookbook!!! Lots of Comfort Food!.......2007-07-23
Bought this after seeing it at a friends home. Have made a few of the recipes and all are very good. I am very pleased with this book - it has many great family style recipes that are easy and healthy.
Oh, yuk!.......2006-12-30
Just more dumb crock-pot recipes that rely on one packaged product after another being dumped in. Why would I want to use a whole bottle of BBQ sauce in a recipe?
Where is the book that uses fresh ingredients, mixed together in a sensible (and maybe slightly creative??) way, simmers them together in the crock pot during the course of the day, resulting in an easy - and HEALTHY - meal? This book is NOT it!
Not many interesting recipes.......2006-12-08
I want a slow cooker cook book for main course recipes, this book emphasizes side dishes, desserts, etc. and has few main course recipes that interest me. Some of the ones I looked at said to cook 9 hours on high which doesn't make sense, based on my experience with crock pots, but I did not try them so can't say if the advice is wrong. I purchased used, cheaply, but would NOT pay full price for it.
Not well thought out.......2006-10-16
Although the recipes are lovely, too many of them (at least half!) have cooking times of 4 or 5 hours. So for the wonderful breakfast casserole, I'm supposed to get up at 4 a.m. to put it together for breakfast at 8? What were they possibly thinking? And I'm also supposed to run home from work at 2 p.m. to put dinner on for 6 p.m. that night? Huh? Maybe these recipes are supposed to appeal to folks who don't have jobs, and are free to start the meal at anytime (althought the 4 a.m. breakfast recipe still puzzles me). But are they really the folks who use slow cookers? Most of us want recipes that cook for at least 8 hours, so that we can put them on before we go to work and have them ready and waiting when we get home. Maybe someone at Southern Cooking needs a reality check.

A Helper for Planning Ahead.......2002-03-08
For the last 10 years this has been my favorite cookbook. I've been through 3 phases of life: single, married, married with 3 children. And the "Do Ahead" cookbook has made all 3 stages of life flow a little easier by planning what's for dinner ahead of time and then enjoying a delicious meal that's quick to put on the table.
Each recipe gives information on freezing or how long to keep in the refrigerator. Several recipes are given for leftovers of a main meat dish (such as ham). Some chapters provide full menus for various occasions.
One of my 10 best cookbooks.......1997-10-02
With an extensive and sophisticated library of cookbooks I am always amused by the compliments received; (always), and the requested recipes from guests enjoying foods prepared through the use of this book! I now give it as a gift as I am tiring of copying from its pages at the behest of my friends, business associates and family. It is filled with practical yet interesting suggestions and many favorite recipies.

the granddaddy (or grandma) of Southern Living cookbooks.......2007-01-23
this cookbook is awesome. My grandmother gave us her extra copy a long time ago, and it gets used often still. The recipes where all written before Southern Living went all healthy, so sometimes the dishes are not the most healthy, but they are full of taste.

Outstanding recipes.......2007-08-23
I have tried several recipes from this book and they have all been outstanding. I recommend it as long as you are not looking for low fat recipes.
An All Time Favorite.......2007-01-10
This cook book should be in any serious cooks/entertainers collection. The Shrimp Scampi is simply sublime!!! The Menu Index is Fabulous including ideas for "A Hunter's Feast, Ladies Tea Room Lunch, Comfort Food for the Family," and so many more. I have thousands of cook books and this is one I go back to time and time again. The recipes always come out fabulous. Too bad it is no longer in print. If you can get a used copy consider your self lucky!
The Perfect Bridal Shower Gift!!!.......2006-06-09
I have cooked for 30 years and have had hundreds of cookbooks and this one is by far the best of them! Perfect for beginners as there are detailed step-by-step how to technique descriptions but also challenging for old "biscuit makers" such as myself as many of the recipes are very complex. The recipes are fabulous but it's all the other stuff in the book that makes this an indispensible resourse: everything from what size pan to use to descriptions of herbs and when (and not) to use them! I only wish I had this book 30 years ago, and my family would probably agree! THE BEST COOKBOOK EVER!!!
A great everyday cookbook!.......2006-04-25
I love Southern Living cookbooks. Every recipe I try is a success and becomes a family favorite, "tried and true" recipe. The "Hummingbird Cake" is my son's absolute favorite and the baked Artichokes w/Sundried Tomatoes is always a hit with company. You won't be disappointed with the recipes in this cookbook!
my favorite all-time cookbook.......2005-11-30
I love and collect cookbooks, and as much as I have learned from Julia Child and the delightfully over-the-top Paul Prudhomme, this is the one I turn to over and over again for both special occasions and regular evening meals. There is such a wide variety of choices in this book- not just southern classics like Country Captain and Hummingbird cake, but excellent quesadillas, scampi, and teryaki beef sticks, and stardards like peanut butter cookies, all in one book. I haven't found a bad recipe yet, and I've tried a lot! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys having people LOVE what they cooked!

20 years of great recipes.......2003-04-19
I really liked this book. It is a collection of the best recipes from Southern Living over a 20 year period. How could it not be great. Also, unlike the annual editions it lists recipes by category making things easier to locate.
Comfort Food at its best.......1999-02-18
This cookbook keeps with the tradition of all previous Southern Living cookbooks, providing recipes for tons of comfort foods. The gooey, rich Candy Bar Brownies are WONDERFUL, but needless to say, everyone is glad that they keep the nutrition information on this recipe a secret. Additionally, this cookbook has quite a few good low-fat/light recipes. Southern Living's 20th Anniversary cookbook is a must have for any kitchen.
Best Yet - Southern Living Annaul Recipes Cookbook.......1998-12-13
My shelves contain many cookbooks. Several are Southern Living Annual Recipes. Believe me, this is the one to have. It is the best - yet.

Good recipes, times misleading.......2007-09-10
I've now tried 4 of the recipes in this book, and they've turned out nicely. Pictures are good too. The one thing I have a problem with is that the prep times don't include prep - because the ingredient list contains already prepped items, such as 1/2 c celery, chopped, or 8 oz chopped sun dried tomatoes- items which I actually have to prep, and many of them just don't come that way. I still highly recommend this book for fast delicious recipes - just add an extra 10 minutes to the times. (The molten cakes on the cover are easy and delicious).
What a great cookbook!.......2007-05-17
I saw a similar cookbook while visitng a friend. It was out of print. This one is even better with great, easy & quick recipes. Every one I have tried has been a hit with my family.
Southern Living Ultimate Quick & Easy Cookbook.......2006-08-09
This is a great cookbook. My sister-in-law recommended it to me. I made a shrimp dish for my friends and they also requested a copy of this cookbook. The other day the same friend told me it's her faviorte cookbook. The recipes are easy to understand, easy to prepare and are very tasty.
Quick doesn't have to mean processed.......2006-07-27
I like flavor! I love to eat good food! And I am all about saving time but come on- does this mean I have to use so much tasteless processed food! Very disappointing.
Very Disappointed.......2006-03-02
I've loved other Southern Living cookbooks and read some reviews that greatly overrated this book's appeal. I wasn't able to preview a copy at my library and was very unhappy with the results. Boring pedestrian recipes that might be quick and easy but look tasteless and boring. I was hoping for some quick innovative ideas but instead was presented with many recipes that involved mixing "a can of" with processed frozen foods. Yuck!!! Definitely not up to the usual standards of Southern Living.

one of the only cookbooks you'll ever need.......2006-08-18
I love to cook and I have found only 2 cookbooks out there with more than a handfull of good recipes. This is one of them. The other is Patti Labelle's 1st cookbook Labelle cuisine. Definitly a must have!
Beautifully Illustrated And Helpful Every Step Of The Way.......2005-10-04
Showcasing these all-occasion recipes from the kitchens of the south is some of the most beautiful photography ever seen in a cookbook. In here are dishes for all seasons and tastes, as well as full course recipes to cover snacks, desserts, Christmastime specialties, family get-togethers and the most elaborate parties. The Southern Living Cookbook is the best and certainly the most eye-pleasing of the mid-size cookbooks and its tested recipes won't overwhelm with too great a challenge. Every dish from wild game to apple dumplings is explained in easy to understand language in a series of step by step instructions. This cookbook will enhance any kitchen in America, north or south!
southernliving cookbook from the food staff at southernlivi.......2003-06-23
I think this is a nice basic cookbook, but If you have a lot of cook books, you will fined a lot of recipes in this cookbook you already have in other cookbooks. I also own a copy of the Southern living ultimate cookbook, I LOVE this cookbook.
The Southern Living Cookbook.......2003-05-25
I purchased this cookbook a number of years ago for myself when I was still a bachelor. I already owned a copy of "Joy of Cooking" but found that it was more helpful as a reference book rather than an everyday cookbook.
I initially chose Southern Living Cookbook for three main reasons. First, I found the pictoral preparation instructions to be VERY helpful, straight-forward, and understandable. Secondly, the recipes were usually made with items that were readily available at the grocery store. Lastly, and most importantly, the dishes ALWAYS sounded absolutely delicious! (I have yet to be disappointed.) I might add, too, that many of the dishes in the cookbook are very congenial to "doctoring" - i.e. substituting or altering the recipe to suit your tastes or health needs.
My wife and I have given this as a wedding gift at least a half dozen times or more over the years and everytime...and I mean, EVERYTIME we get a thank you card back from them, they rant and rave how much they love their Southern Living Cookbook and thank us perfusely for getting it for them. (I might add, not one of them had it on their wedding registry.)
The best in a great series.......2003-03-30
I have several Southern Living cookbooks, but this one remains my favorite. It has all the essential traditional Southern recipes in an attractive and easy to follow format. If I could only keep one cookbook - and I have over 100 - this would be the one.

My Favorite Cookbook.......2006-10-23
The Southern Living Cookbook Classics cookbook is one of the best cookbooks I've ever had. I bought it five years ago when I first moved to Florida from the Pacific Northwest because I wanted to learn to cook "southern food". I've relied on it as my standby cookbook ever since for my day-to-day cooking. The recipes aren't just southern, they cross regions, and are always delicious and are invariably easy to make. When I have something in the refrigerator that I want to use, I look to see what the cookbook offers for recipes.
This cookbook has hooked me on Southern Living cookbooks.
An Overlooked Gem & A Matchless Value!.......2002-09-21
This Southern Living Cookbook is an overlooked gem and a matchless value. Combining 6 (!) Southern Living "All-Time Favorite" Cookbooks into one volume! ... The quality is exceptional, as it offers over 1,000 of Southern Living's "All-Time Favorite" recipes and over 500 photos.
The 6 original cookbooks this combines are out-of-print and have limited availability. This edition is also an improvement over the originals, as they are paperback and this volume is hardback. The page size has also been increased, which is a nice touch.
As I have 2 of the 6 original cookbooks, I was pleased to find not one photo or recipe is missing! In fact, page for page they're identical. ...I purchased one for myself, and a few extra for Christmas gifts. If you subscribe to SL, or enjoy their recipes, I can't imagine you wouldn't enjoy this cookbook. It's a gem!
Simple - delicious........Recipes for the family.......2001-10-03
I read cookbooks like some read a novel, as I went thru the recipes they were delectable, no unheardof spices or ingredients. Basic food item's we would have in our pantries. While reading the recipes, some of the ingedients were predictable and I rather enjoyed that. They cook the way I do! We all have expectations when it comes to taste.
The pictures were great as well, appearing "homemade" versus created by a chef.
Another great thing, "menu tie in's", dinner and dessert on one page. Very nice indeed.
Food and recipes prepared the way my family will enjoy it.
