Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, with great directions!.......2007-10-10

This is a beautiful book--artsy enough to be a coffee table book, but it's full of outstanding directions on making your own sushi (everything from ingredients--what they are, where to get them, and how to use--to making the sushi and how to present it in a traditional style). It's so pretty that it's very motivating and inspiring. I gave this to my parents as a gift, and they loved it! This is the only book you need to learn to make sushi!

3 out of 5 stars Totally impractical........2007-08-11

Wow stunning photos but what a lousy cookbook. If you like looking at pictures of sushi, this book is for you. If you like actually eating or making sushi, then this huge book is totally impractical in the kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely pictures.......2007-05-30

The explanations are pretty good, but what sets this book apart is the pictures: large, beautiful and varied. After reading reviews for this book and for the rather unlikely Sushi for Dummies, I elected to purchase both, this one for illustrations and admittedly decent content and the other book because, after all, "dummy" pretty well describes me.

1 out of 5 stars Very Unhappy With This Book It has None Of The Main Roll Recipes.......2007-05-30

Today I received this book it has none of the main sushi roll recipes (spicy tuna roll, normal california roll, hawaiian roll, tiger roll, dynamite roll, pizza roll, crunchy shrimp rolls, etc. etc. etc.) mainly vegitarian rolls, and sashimi.

It does have nice pictures too bad it doesn't have good recipes. I am very disappointed with this book and am returning it.

5 out of 5 stars Super easy!.......2007-05-12

This book has great full color pictures throughout. The directions have photos with each step. The directions are simple and super easy to understand. We made great sushi the first time!!!

this is a great intro to sushi, i bought one for myself and gave another as a gift. It was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Sushi Kit Has everything you need for great sushi.......2007-09-12

Everything you need for great sushi. Including 4 sets of chopsticks. I'm thinking about getting another in order to have another matching set.

4 out of 5 stars Very good guide book.......2007-08-23

Once we got our mind to doin it, this book has been of great help, easy to follow at least so far, we have not attempted all the sushi recipes as yet, but so far so good the first ones.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!.......2007-05-17

This is a wonderful purchase for the beginning sushi chef! Very informative and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Sushi in a snap........2007-04-23

I bought this kit because my wife and I are addicted to Sushi, but the cost was killing us. To aleaviate the financial strain we decided to learn to make Sushi ourselves. This kit has it all; An easy to read how to booklet, bamboo rolling mat, dipping dishes, rice molds for sashimi and four sets of reusable chop sticks. All of this together in a very nice storage box package. As for solving our sushi desire it has. Although making sushi is a time consuming ordeal at first, once you get the hang of it you will want to throw sushi parties for all your friends. The hardest part of making sushi would be perfecting the sticky rice and locating all the ingredients at your local supermarket, but as far as cost goes you will spend a fraction of what it costs to purchase ready made sushi in a resteraunt or market.

The revised edition of The Book of Macrobiotics also includes a new chapter on the Spiritual World, new material on Yin and Yang and the Five Transformations, Man/Woman Relations, and Humanity's Origin and Destiny, and an annotated East West Reading List for further reading and enjoyment. Many new
illustrations have been furnished, and the Food Composition tables have been expanded to include nutritional information on dozens of foods such as tempeh, seitan, rice cakes, and amazake not previously available.

1 out of 5 stars health, happiness, peace... and nothing else?.......2003-02-06

People should always be careful of self-proclaimed gurus who have universal remedies...

I was a macrobiotic myself and gave up because I couldn't stand so many irrational restrictions and religious proclaims.

80% of macrobiotics is just vegetarian commom sense and has been around for millenia... but the remaining 20% is a dangerous mix of the Japanese likes and dislikes in food, with more than a pinch of new age mumbo jumbo.

Look for a good vegetarian book for food and search in philosophy or religion if you want answers on the meaning of life.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing and Difficult to Read.......2002-02-01

Warning: This book simply may have not been for me, so take the star rating with a grain of salt.

I wanted to like this book, having heard a great many good things about the Macrobiotic diet. And I understand that to understand the dietary and health theories behind Macrobiotics, it's important to understand the philosophical basis. However, the way this book is structured, I found it quite frustrating to read, and I honestly failed to follow many of the connections that it was trying to make between the philosophical systems and eating issues.

I'm not giving up on the subject matter completely, but I suspect that this was not the place to begin. Great appendixes, on the other hand, and almost worth it just for them.

5 out of 5 stars The Book of Macrobiotics.......2000-07-27

A profound an logical study of Man and the Universe evolving as a whole. An extensive study which encompasses evolution of Man and the Universe, based on Eastern and Western knowledge. A guide to reestablish physical, psychological and spiritual quality of life as the fundamental means to achieving world peace. This is a book to raise consciousness and awareness to continue human biological and spiritual evolution within a frame of a conscientious life style of continued transformation and awareness, enjoying the endless process of change and self-transformation, bringing health and happiness into our lives.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent started for those new to sushi.......2004-12-28

With an innovative approach to learning about sushi, The Sushi Kit comes complete with recipes and all the tools necessary to prepare those recipes. In addition to the book you get a mold to help make nigiri-zushi, a rolling mat for making maki-zushi, a rice paddle, chopsticks, and dipping bowls.

The first part of the book includes a lot of tips to help pick the right ingredients. Needless to say, picking the right fish can make a tremendous difference in the quality of the results. Following this is are short sections on Nigiri-zushi, gunkan, maki-zushi, kappa-maki (cucumber roll), California roll, teriyaki chicken roll, preparation instructions, serving suggestions, and a glossary.

These are easy recipes to prepare and although there are few actual recipes it is easy enough to work from the base provided here to create your own favorites. This book is primarily for the novice as it does not contain very many recipes and all the ones included are both common and easy to prepare without mistakes. With easy to follow instructions and delicious results, The Sushi Kit is recommended for the novice or the average person who just wants to prepare their own at home on occasion.

3 out of 5 stars For novices only.......2003-09-09

This kit is a small book coupled with a few small items that assist in the preparation and serving of sushi.
I was disappointed by the brevity of the book. It can be read from cover to cover in 15 minutes. The book contains rudimentary info on sushi history, etiquette, and preparation. Some recipes are included, which would be useful if you have never seen or eaten sushi before. However, if you've eaten sushi a couple of times or more, then this book won't be of much interest to you.
The non-book portion of the kit is not spectacular, either. While the miniature bowls, plate, paddle, etc. are fine, they are not essential for preparing sushi at home and will collect dust most of the time. The only item I thought really useful and unique to sushi preparation is the bamboo sushi rolling mat that comes with the kit. Keep in mind that this item can be bought elsewhere without the accompanying unnecessary items.
Sushi lovers will be bored by this kit, and sushi novices would learn more by visiting a sushi restaurant and watching the chefs at the bar.

Book Description

Already a longtime hit in Japan, "Iron Chef" is taking over America-and this is the first and only official guide to "the culinary equivalent of the Friday night fights" (Orange County Register).

Each episode of this "oddly addictive"* show features a cook-off between one of the valiant Iron Chefs and a guest chef bold enough to challenge him. With pro-wrestling style theatrics, bad dubbing, and high-intensity plate-by-plate commentary, "Iron Chef" has boiled over into a bona fide phenomenon.

The book-first published in Japan but with added material for the American audience-features full-color photos, an episode guide, recipes, interviews with all the Iron Chefs, and much more. The heat is on...and the fans' mouths will be watering for this authentic insider's guide.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Iron Chef: The Official Book.......2006-11-20

I enjoyed the information in the book and all the pictures. I was hoping for more recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Top entertainment, ok book.......2006-10-26

Iron Chef is the most ingenious TV show ever created, well, the REAL original IC show, at any rate.

The over-the top cheesy quality, the bad-English dubbing, the dumb air-head actresses(who sometimes come up with surprising smart comments); the exotic ingredients, and of course--the challenges. The stuff that no normal person would ever cook, or dream of touching on his dinner plate.
The combination of sports arena quality and the sideshow of Prices Right, equals=valuable hours of your life spent on watching TV!

the book is very in depth, though not quite a "cook" book, the only true thing it lacks it the statistical point. Who won the battles, etc.

I am very disappointed in Food Network for not continuing to buy more Iron Chef shows and or continuing to show the reruns; and not to make them into DVDs....instead they're being despots and forcing us to watch that horrible horrible horrible mutant child that came out of that so called "chef".
Yet again, an original anime/comedy/whatever show is ruined...just like how they mangled Godzilla. the "Other Thing" show lacks the corny flavor, the second commentator (Fuki-San was awesome), the REAL chairman, a REAL Chef, REAL ingredients; Fun challengers, (ok, Ming Tsai was funny, but that's it);my respect for Ming grew after watching that only good episode...he was funny, relaxed, self-assured and he kicked Flay's butt!!
awful musical score (sure the soundtrack of the ONLY incarnation of IC was from.....movie, Backdraft), pathetic judges (they ALL annoy me, for some reason).

watching the "OTher Thing" gives me a stomach ache, a headache....and I keep rambling.

SCOUR THE EARTH for lost videos/tapes/bootlegs of the ONLY IRON CHEF. If you're a true fan, don't even bother watching "Other Thing".

"If my memory serves me correctly....this book will give me recollections of funny and good times."

+150 on the Wow meter for the show, 6+ for the book;
-100 on the Puke-O-Meter for "the Other Thing"

5 out of 5 stars Die-hard Iron Chef fan's souvenier.......2006-07-20

This is one of the few but worthwhile memento's of the now defunct TV series, Iron Chef. While some fans are disappointed that there are few recipes, the book is about the show and the people. Interviews abound from not only the Iron Chef, but the cast and crew as well. There is even a statistics chart in the back detailing the wins and losses of Iron Chef battles. If you still love Iron Chef and want something memorable, this is the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book for Fans.......2005-09-09

If you have ever had anything more than a passing interest with Iron Chef before, this is certainly a book worth picking up. The book itself is packed with gorgeous photos, plenty of interviews, and a staggering amount of information about the show itself, particular episodes, and even recipes. Granted, most people won't necessarily be using this book as a typical cookbook, but the added recipes just feel like a bonus on top of an already excellent book.

All in all, I was delightfully satisfied with this gem. Also, if you're looking for a bargain and are not sure about the book itself as far as quality is concerned, I highly suggest taking a look at the Used section here at Amazon. I picked up my copy that way for a fantastic $1.98 last year for pristine quality and even now the prices for the Used copies are in the same ballpark.

4 out of 5 stars good comprehensive overview of the series.......2005-03-04

This is a rather nice little collector's item for fans of the show and even those who are just simply curious about its hype. It provides a fairly informative history of the show, nice illustrations throughout, recipes, "battle" ratings, and even restaurant location and information for selected chefs on the show.
The best sections were the personal interviews from various contributors to the show.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars authentic homestyle Japanese cooking.......2001-02-01

I received this book as a gift from my Sister-in-law, a Nisei herself. After about 10 years, she got a copy for herself and her mother, because she realized that she had never seen a better book on Japanese cooking. Her comment was that it had all the food that her family really fixed growing up, but that the recipes were in English measurements (i.e. cups, teaspoons, etc.), which made following the recipes much more convenient to actually use. Before, she and her mother used to laboriously convert the Japanese measurements to English ones, which was a pain. Besides trying all kinds of noodle recipes, I have used this book to make really good vinegared-rice sushi, which is always a huge hit at parties; everyone is just ga-ga; the presentation is just beautiful, truly artistic. The food is also very low fat and healthy, lots of fish. I think if I fed my family this cuisine for one month, we'd lose some serious weight. Japanese cooking is not really as difficult as you might think. There is a relatively simple cast of ingredients and untensils, most of which can be easily obtained at a Japanese grocery store in any good-sized US city. Also, it's quite possible to order Japanese specialty products on the Internet, for e.g at ethnicgrocer.com

As a grown-up student of teism I have shared this book with many adults to help them understand the basic steps for preparing powdered green tea (usucha). It describes the first thin tea practice (temae) using a try, and requires very few utentsils. Dr. Sato, the author, has received the highest honors in Japan, and has a very long teaching career in the US. This is evident in the book's beautiful photos and clear instructions. Highly recommended for kids, their parents and grandparents. Enjoy a cup of tea the Japanese style. Elsa Statzner

5 out of 5 stars The most used book in my kitchen!.......2006-02-12

The information is easy to follow and ingredients aren't so obscure that you can't find them.
I received this book as a gift almost ten years ago and it is still the most used cookbook in my kitchen.
This was my first Japanese cookbook and now it's one of eight yet it's the one I go to first whenever I'm cooking Japanese.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book--But Beginner Beware!.......2000-04-29

I bought this book while I was in Japan thinking it would be an easy introduction to Japanese cooking that an inspired but unskilled beginner like me could take on--that was a mistake! The book has lots of detailed description and ideas, including illustrations, but the author certainly doesn't cut corners for simplicity. Traditional Japanese home cooking takes time, preparation and practice, and for the most part the recipes in this book are no exception. However, if you're a fairly experienced cook already, and want to get a taste of what Japanese cuisine in all about, then this book is probably what you're looking for.

    Book Description

Sushi, that so typical Japanese food, has a history going back to prehistoric times. Over the centuries it has been refined into a surprising number of variations, from the simplest everyday fare--such as tuna wrapped in vinegared rice and crisp vitamin-rich nori seaweed--to elegant and imaginative sushi created for festive occasions. The centerpiece of this book is Edomae-zushi, the delicate, natural, fresh variety first made in Tokyo in the early nineteenth century and now popular throughout the world.

The sushi shop, with its scrubbed wooden counter and fillets of raw fish sleeping in refrigerated cases right before the diner's eyes, is a memorable experience in itself but faced with such variety--and the special vocabulary of the sushi world--how and what does one order, how does one truly appreciate it? The answers are all here. The reader of The Book of Sushi will come to understand the basics of what the sushi chef must learn during his long apprenticeship: how fish and other seafoods are carefully selected, the season when certain species are at their best, how the fish and rice and other ingredientssome fresh from the mountains rather than the sea--are prepared in the most tasteful and tasty way. Here, too, are the utensils and techniques, fully illustrated, of sushi making and an assessment of the nutritional value of this marvelous, low-calorie source of vitamins and healthy, uncontaminated protein.

The focus is always on the traditional--the best sushi--and with this beautifully illustrated book as a guide, the reader will know not only how to enjoy the sushi shop with savoir-faire, how, in fact, to become a connoisseur, but how to make and serve this intriguing, delightfully refreshing dish at home. Whether you're a near connoisseur or virtual novice, there's always more to learn about sushi. The Book of Sushi is jammed with tips on how to make these succulent morsels yourself, or order them like a veteran at a sushi bar. Learn to tell at a glance if fish is really fresh. Learn just what the sushi master's training entails. Learn just how good for you this dish really is. There's just one drawback: the more you learn about sushi, the more you'll probably start liking it. You may find sushi getting to be a habit.

This book is true fun to read. Pictures are spare, elegant, and profuse; for a good ways in the middle of the book, every other page is a full-color photo designed to remind you how various forms of sushi relate to the passing of the seasons.

The text is clear - very readable - and the author's love for the history, tradition and eating of sushi shines through. Tips on what to order don't feel like prescriptions so much as suggestions; I especially appreciated the explanation of which types of fish are good during different parts of the year. The book is crammed with practical information like this - Omae points out that maki rolls should be eaten first, not because of some obscure protocol, but because the seaweed-paper wrapper may not hold up as moisture soaks into it. And it may sound obvious in retrospect, but I'd never actually realized that you're not supposed to dip the rice part of nigiri-zushi into the soy sauce; rather, you hold it 'upside down' and just wet the fish.

This book will make you want to go out and eat more sushi, and if you're a thoughtful person like me, all that good information will probably enhance the experience. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Real value for money.......2000-11-21

This is absolutely the best of the 6 Sushi books I have. In fact the simple form of this book contains the whole idea of sushi - keep it simple and yet delicious. There are not many colour illustrations but the plain line drawings tell you exactly what you need to know about preparing fish or making maki rolls. In addition to actual recipes the book has stories about fish markets and sushi bars in Japan. If you want to have a book which you can leave casually on a coffee table do not buy this book but if you want to know about sushi or even want to make sushi yourself this is the only book you'll ever need.

    4 out of 5 stars A Introduction to Sushi.......1999-12-30

I found this book to be a fine introduction to sushi and sushi making. Not only are the basic techniques of sushi making described, but the authors also include a wealth of information about sushi in general. Topics covered include the history of sushi, the process of obtaining fish for sushi, the etiquette of sushi eating, and much more. For those interested in simliar books, I must recommend Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art. Together these works will give a novice everything they need to know about sushi and the cooking of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on sushi.......1999-02-28

This book gives a very good overview of sushi making. While all of the tools used are not available in the home kitchen, the methods can be used for home sushi. Beautiful photographs, too. I would say this book is a step above entry-level information, but that shouldn't scare the sushi-novice reader. Just buy it...

4 out of 5 stars Good book for learning what good sushi is.......1998-07-07

I wanted a book that would help me understand the difference between ordinary sushi (which is all over the place here) and great sushi. After reading this book, you'll know enough about sushi to at least recognize what you're about to eat, and what to do when in a sushi restaurant.
