5 out of 5 stars The Heat Islands: A Doc Ford Novel.......2006-11-04

I love the character who is much more than he appears to be. Very smooth reading, captures your attention with twists and turns, and for me a very exciting end.

5 out of 5 stars North of Havana.......2005-09-08

Love the "Doc Ford" adventures, especially all the references to Florida. Author makes each page an easy read and very hard to put down in the middle of the adventures. Just discovered Randy Wayne White and want more, more, more!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Heat Islands.......2005-09-07

A sound follow up to White's "Sanibel Flats". Interestingly, White chooses to change his style and still makes it work. He adds an environmental flavor and again comes up with a thoroughly interesting story and a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Top Writer, Top Researcher Excellent Doc Ford Series #2.......2005-08-14

I have read all of Randy Wayne Wright's Doc Ford books and am anxiously awaiting his next. This particular book is the one that really got me hooked into the characters and Doc Ford. Mr. Wright is an unusual writer in that his books are based in Florida and are quite accurate and informative about the state, as well as entertaining about the characters and intriguing about the mysteries he incorporates. I have encouraged several fellow Floridians to read him and they all feel the same way. This man is OUR FLORIDA AUTHOR and in my opinion has John MacDonald beat by a mile.
Keep on writing Randy.

3 out of 5 stars a worthy series.......2004-04-04

HEAT ISLANDS is the second book in the Doc Ford mystery series, after SANIBEL FLATS. Ford, a marine biologist and ex-secret agent, is pulled into trouble when a friend is accused of murder. The case is tied to some shady dealings involving land and the Floridian environment-destroying building boom.
Ford mourns for a lost Florida, everywhere he goes the state has been overrun by tourits and developers. He's trying to hide at a quiet marina, but (like his forefather Travis Mcgee) can't resist a friend in need. White's description of Florida's nature is wonderful. The villain is sort of a stereotypical nut job, but Ford's quiet heroism makes up for it. Recommended.

Book Description

Never have the stakes been higher. Never have two people faced greater risks or grappled with deeper desire. Never has Cherry Adair–award-winning author of Hot Ice–burned the pages with so much blazing action and blistering passion.

Professional art restorer Emily Greene is in no mood to see the devil-may-care Max Aries. She hasn’t forgotten–or forgiven–the way Max dropped into her life a year ago, stole her heart, then vanished without a word. Max hadn’t kept in touch with his father, Daniel, either. Daniel Aries had been a master of art restoration and reproduction, and not only Emily’s longtime mentor, but a trusted friend. His unexpected suicide devastates her. And when the prodigal playboy Max returns, her welcome is less than warm–even though his timely arrival in her bedroom saves her from a lethal intruder. But her fury gives way to fear when Max reveals that his father’s death was actually murder . . . and that Emily’s life is now in danger. Like it or not, to stay alive, Emily must put herself in Max’s hands. And once upon a time, that wasn’t such a bad place to be.

But what killer would target professional restorers of Renaissance artworks? Max suspects that a pencil sketch found in his father’s studio, inscribed with a cryptic code, may hold the key. His hunch is confirmed when intel from his control at the counterterrorist organization T-FLAC reveals that the Black Rose terror cell is involved–a chilling revelation that elevates the threat level almost as high as the tension that’s bristling between Max and Emily. Max isn’t about to take his eyes off Emily–though only partly for professional reasons–and even Emily’s rage over Max’s take-charge attitude can’t compare to her anger at herself for so long denying the truer, deeper feelings she has for him. As they crisscross Europe, piecing together the shocking clues to an insidious international plot, dodging increasingly lethal traps, and passionately making up for too much lost time, they realize that–in more ways than one–they can’t live without each other. With no chance of turning back, Max and Emily must put their lives on the line, put their true feelings to the test . . . and get ready to take the heat.

1 out of 5 stars white heat?.......2007-10-11

I love Cherry Adair, but this was the worst book, I have read or should I say tried to read in a long, long, time. I could not finish this book, plot was crazy and all over the place. I will pick up her next book and hope for the best, because this was not it.

5 out of 5 stars Cherry Adair does it again!.......2007-08-30

I have been reading Cherry's books since her first Harlequin, Mercenary and have loved all of them.
White Heat does not disappoint!

Max Aries had an affair with Emily Greene the year before when he was on an assignment. His father, who he is estranged from, was her mentor and it looks like he's been murdered. Emily has had three attempts on her life and she and Max are on the run.

White Heat is a terrific romantic suspense. It's a non stop thrill ride through the world of art restorers, Europe, the U.S. and of course T-FLAC.

The chemistry between Emily and Max sizzles and the twists and turns of the story will keep you on your toes.

Great book! I can't wait until the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Another hot T-FLAC romantic suspense.......2007-08-29

In between assignments, T-FLAC team lead Max Aries is in Florence to settle the estate of his recently deceased father. The two weren't close; he referred to dad as a "sperm donor" in fact. When he arrives at the villa of his former lover (and protégé of his artist father), Emily is being attacked by an armed intruder. Max jumps into the fray, only to get clocked with a frying pan and kicked in the jewels for his efforts. Emily specialized in reproducing great works of art for a wealthy man who donates his paintings to churches but still wants their likeness hanging in his home. When other artists that have duplicated paintings all die under mysterious circumstances, Max is convinced that Emily is a target and that a rogue T-FLAC agent is responsible. But she is adamant about not getting involved with Max again, as he broke her heart the last time he was in town.

The great thing about Cherry Adair is she combines great action with really sensuous storylines. She also incorporates recurring characters - but their appearance is there to move the story along. Her heroines tend not to be wallflowers, and for the most part, Emily falls into this category. But be warned - this one is much gorier than any of her earlier T-FLAC novels - plenty of blood and guts - but it works within the context of the story. One drawback is that the rogue agent, Catherine Savage, was never in the foreground of the story - everything related to her character was handled off line- just seemed odd. I found her to be an intriguing character that I wanted to get to know. Even so, this is a well rounded novel - the 11th in the T-FLAC series - but can easily stand on its own merits and its not necessary to read the first ten to get the gist of the back story.

4 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING.......2007-08-26

THIS BOOK KEPT ME ENTERTAINED FROM BEGINNING TO END. IT WAS A LITTLE MORE VIOLENT THAN I WAS USED TO BUT I WANTED TO KNOW WHO THE BOSS OF THE BLACK LILLY WAS. I LIKED MAX AND EMILY ALOT. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A VERY GOOD READ.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-08-23

This book was very exciting and intense, it had just the right amount of action and steamy scenes. I can't wait for the next T-Flac book.

The early years of the twenty-first century were a tumultuous time in America. During this time the man beside the President was Ari Fleischer, his press secretary and one of his most trusted confidants. In this role, Fleisher was present for every decision and became an eyewitness to history. In this riveting account, Fleischer goes behind the scenes as he recalls his experiences in the West Wing, including such momentous events as the 2000 election, September 11, 2001 and its aftermath, the anthrax scare, the war in Afghanistan, the pressure-filled buildup to the war in Iraq, and the President's thoughts as the war began. Through the ups and downs of this time, he took the heat, fielded the questions, and brought the President's message into living rooms around the world.

The early years of the twenty-first century were a tumultuous time in America. The country faced a hotly contested presidential election, the largest terrorist attack in the nation's history, and the early stages of war. Through it all, President George W. Bush surrounded himself with a handful of close advisers. During this time the man beside the President was Ari Fleischer, his press secretary and one of his most trusted confidants. In this role, Fleisher was present for every decision and became an eyewitness to history.

In this riveting account, Fleischer goes behind the scenes as he recalls his experiences in the West Wing. Through the ups and downs of this time, he took the heat, fielded the questions, and brought the President's message into living rooms around the world.

In Taking Heat, Fleischer, for the first time, gives his perspective on:

This is the story of the men and women of the White House press corps and the cornerstones of democracy: freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. Fleischer presents an in-depth, insider's view on the Washington political arena from a perspective few have seen.

Fleischer writes of his belief that the press has a bias in Washington. It's not a question of partisanship or press-driven ideology. Instead, it's a focus on conflict, particularly if it's a conflict they can attach to the President. It's the nature of the White House press corps, regardless of who's in power. The members of the White House press corps are masters at being devil's advocate, able to take with passion the opposite side of whatever issue the President supports. Fleischer's job was to calmly field their questions, no matter how pointed.

Taking Heat is an introspective exploration of the top political events in the first half of the Bush administration, as well as the candid observations of a professional who stood in the bright lights of the world stage.

1 out of 5 stars I got to be honest here...........2007-08-05

When I found this book (on CD) in the sale rack I thought maybe I'd found a rare jewel. Figuring the early Bush years were old news and this book was sent to the sale rack been because of that.

First off Ari should have never read his own book. He came off as a real complainer. A man who had written a book to continue to make excuses for his decisions. Notice I didn't say mistakes. He rarely stated a move of his without showing us how he was forced to do so. It was very sad. Even at one point the old Clinton administration pushes him around.

The few moments he gives us of true inside action where wonderful. There may have only been three in the whole book. The Colin Powell condom story was one of them. Ari that's what the reader wanted in the book.

What scared me was that Ari came off as extremely angry at the press. There is one woman reporter who he mocks endlessly in his vocal impersonation of her. I hope she doesn't hear the CD version or she is going to be super mad. Ari spends a very long chapter expaining how the press is unfair and bias. He uses graduation numbers instead of true stories. We all saw the press eat Bill Clinton alive...so it was hard to believe they were nicer to Bill then they were to George. That chapter should have met the shreader.

Ari did show some spots of careless reporting but his use of "you should have believed the White House" was a weak response. After past White House administrations trying to "out sly" the press Ari should have known the press would not simply take him at his word. He came off sounding like a naive high school student.

Several of the world stituations that happened while Ari was in office where handled with amazing skill in real life but Ari made it sound like he was rolled over. The moment where Bush took the megaphone in NYC was the most powerful moment in his presidency. Luckily I saw it because Ari barely mentioned it.

Ari ducked and dodged the press for years. He's mad that he did it. He's still mad at them. The amazing strategies the Bush administration used to keep the American people informed are not mentioned in this book. I wanted to learn something. Instead I see Ari scolding a press member for a inaccurate story that hurt the White House then giving the same guy a hot breaking story in the next breath by accident AND letting the guy run it. What was his reasoning? It sounded weak and also like bad management.

Was Ari out of his league? The book makes it appear so. Luckily I watch all this on television as an American citizen. I know the book paints the wrong picture. To the public Ari did a stand up job and he worked well to keep the American people informed. So next time you write a book Ari stick to your guns and be proud of what you did. It would make for a much better read.

4 out of 5 stars Very fine comedy!.......2007-05-13

Absolutely rip-roaring hilarious!! It appears that he is actually not trying to be comedic but when one reads "I will always admire the President's calm and self control" (pg. 140, referring to Bush listening to "My Pet Goat" after being informed that his contry is under attack), it should be obvious that we are in the presence of a comedic master or an idiot who manages to be very funny. Either way, one of the funniest books I have read! Minus one star for some tedious passages trying to show himself in a good light without being funny.
The dialogues of george bush that are presented are totally unrealistic and seemed to be calculated to put him in a good light. For eg., he says Bush was a superb military commander as he left all the major decisions to the generals but then conveniently ignores Shinseki. In fact, most of the Iraq war dialogue is very funny now that we know more about what actually happened.

4 out of 5 stars The Rating Depends on Your Point of View.......2006-04-24

Did my opinion of the president change after reading this book? Not really. I read the book with a somewhat-open mind, in that the book is written from the personal perspective of someone who was there. Fleischer wrote from his perspective; gave his testimoy; in that respect, the books is very well written. We're also talking about someone who trusts the President implicitly, so he's going to defend him. So I can't consider this a totally "objective" account of what was going on in the White House during the time the war was being debated.

I don't particuarly appreciate President Bush's policies and his way of thinking, but I do appeciate the fact that he doesn't change his mind once he makes a decision. (Most might say he won't admit he's made a mistake - that's a risk that's run with standing your ground.)

What I did appreciate about the book was the insight into President Bush's character. It explains to me why he thinks the way he does, and helps me understand why he says what he does. Doesn't mean I appreciate what he says, but understanding a person goes a long way in formulating an opinion.

I also appreciated the behind-the-scenes view into what was going on in the White House during the tense fall of '01.

I loved the insight into the media. Do I think they're biased? Absolutely! The book explains the media as much as it does the White House. Being interested in journalism, I was wrapped up in that part of the book. Doesn't excuse their recent behaviors....but the atmosphere of pressure to get the news out as it happens makes people take corners. I can understand that too.

Bottom line: if you're a Bush supporter, you'll love the book. If you a Bush loather, I don't see this book changing your mind. I wish, however, that you might be able to read it to understand why he is how he is...

3 out of 5 stars Like some people still watch TV: what do they know?.......2005-10-17

The author, Ari Fleischer, of TAKING HEAT / THE PRESIDENT, THE PRESS, AND MY YEARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE, having been close to events that may yet produce an indictment of presidential adviser Karl Rove, has a point of view which is in need of a form of analysis made possible in modern society by a heady mix of Freud's books on Thomas Woodrow Wilson and WIT AND ITS RELATION TO THE UNCONSCIOUS. People who appreciate this book are likely to be applying the synthesis at the center of the latter, on "The Pleasure Mechanism and the Psychogenesis of Wit" and "The Motives of Wit and Wit as a Social Process." A little old lady named Helen Thomas is so good at filling the role which clowns reserve for representatives of virtue that Chapter 13 (pages 246-258) gives her a platform capable of illustrating section 64 of Nietzsche's THE GAY SCIENCE on "Sceptics. -- I am afraid that old women in their most secret heart of hearts are more sceptical than all men:" only to have her observations about "turmoil in the Arab world, obviously, from all the things we've been doing" answered at the end of the chapter by:

ARI: I think there's a lot of silent rejoicing in the Arab world that Saddam Hussein is gone.

The silent majority was also used by Nixon to justify his policies, which took years and a Congressional action ending American bombing in Southeast Asia instead of the timetable that "Peace is at hand" usually implies. Fortunately for Karl Rove, people tend to allow advisers near the top to expect to get away with a variety of secret circus stunts, justified by ideals worthy of THOMAS WOODROW WILSON, as when George W. Bush stated in March, 2003, "The best thing we have going for us is that our values will unleash that freedom." (p. 335).

Now is hardly the time to use Carl Schmitt's book, THE CONCEPT OF THE POLITICAL, to illustrate what war signifies in modern society:

Hegel has also advanced a definition of the enemy which in general has been evaded by modern philosophers. The enemy is a negated otherness. But this negation is mutual and this mutuality of negations has its own concrete existence, as a relation between enemies; this relation of two nothingnesses on both sides bears the danger of war. ([Schmitt's Note], p. 63).

It was in answering a question about the cost of such danger, based on an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office of between $9 and $13 billion, that Ari Fleischer made a famous remark, on October 1, 2002, "The cost of one bullet if the Iraqi people take it upon themselves is substantially less than that." (p. 286). The form of apology demonstrates techniques Freud associated with wit: "I had only one bullet to give my country, and I used it to shoot myself in the foot." (p. 286). Back on May 1, 2002, Helen Thomas was told that regime change in Iraq had already been approved in a law, "passed by the House and Senate, signed into law by President Clinton. Regime change, in whatever form it takes, is the policy of the United States government, under President Clinton, continued under President Bush. . . . Helen, if you were the President, you could have vetoed the law. (Laughter) President Clinton signed it, and the President will keep it enforced." (p. 252).

Politics in America has become so Schmittian that it is not surprising to find that Ari's gratitude to his editor, Claire Wachtel, in the Preface, is primarily about their political differences:

I had the help of many people writing and editing this book. Thank you to my editor at William Morrow, Claire Wachtel. A self-described "knee-jerk liberal," Claire helped me--sometimes forced me--to carefully think through my arguments and back them up. She challenged my assumptions and helped me to move from assertions to reasoned statements supported by evidence. What may seem self-evident to a Republican wasn't good enough for Claire. One of the most helpful and effective "prods" I ever met, I couldn't have written this without her. Thank you for your wisdom. (p. xiii).

To rock and rollers, this might sound too much like the chorus of the song `got my own thing' on Liz Phair's recent `somebody's miracle' (2005) CD. "They say that we would get along. So let's just get along. Oooh boy, I'd love to help. Give you enough rope to hang yourself. And watch the silly things you do." The court of public opinion is not as narrow in its scope as the laws which are likely to come to the attention of a special prosecutor who investigates how secret information is used by those who saw a bit more intelligence than the President saw before he claimed that Congress saw the same intelligence he saw. "And I hope you're swinging this way too. Boy I do." Liz sounds like part of a war between sexes that becomes "freed from all particular personality" (Schmitt, p. 63), as Hegel put it in "This war is not a war of families against families, but between peoples, and hatred becomes thereby undifferentiated and freed from all particular personality." People at the top like to pretend that they have a frame of reference which is above Hegel's complicated formulation, but then we get a book like TAKING HEAT.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2005-09-21

I'm guessing that at least one-half of this book's nearly 400 pages are transcripts -- either of excerpts from the President's remarks or speeches and of the give-and-take at Ari's press briefings. Since Fleischer maintains that his job was never to make news, the transcripts typically illustrate his ability calmly to provide platitudinous non-answers to nearly every question. There are so many of these illustrations that it becomes as tedious and aggravating to the reader as it must have been for the news-hungry journalists. The many excerpts from GWB's remarks serve to reconfirm that -- whatever his other strengths -- it is undeniable (even by his strong supporters) that Bush's rhetorical skills are weak. On the other hand, Fleisher does ably document the naked pro-liberal, anti-conservative bias by so many reporters from the mainstream media; he also demonstrates very convincingly an overwhelming press agenda to create news by finding or exaggerating conflicts between government officials where none exist, i.e. to sensationalize at all costs rather than to inform readers of the real facts. He does a good job, too, of compiling many examples of blatant factual errors by major media, reminding us that, unlike newspapers, broadcast news never troubles to issue corrections. Although my impression of Fleischer from his TV appearances is that he is an interesting, witty, engaging personality, his book is very dry, revealing very little of his personal side and virtually none of the President in whose company he spent so much time. The book contains very few memorable behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and adds astonishingly little to the below-the-surface portrait of Bush (or Fleischer) as a person. The book could have been shortened by half and we would have learned no less about W or Ari.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kink is hot!.......2007-05-16

This book was awesome. It has two wonderful stories in it. Watch Me by Sasha White and Sex, Lies, and Videotape by Saskia Walker.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape

Kelly Burton is at a concert trying to sneak backstage to get an autograph for her friend, who couldn't go to the concert. She sees a whole new side to rock star, Clayton Warren. Clayton's bodyguard catches her when she trying to leave the dressing room. Tommy Samson is one sexy bodyguard. Kelly is glad Tommy caught her and ends up spending the night at his hotel. They both think that it is going to be a one night stand, but they keep thinking about each other and they try to find each other again.

Watch Me

Bethany is feeling a bit restless. Her husband Grant has been working late a lot and Bethany is feeling a little lonely. Until she sees a roofer working on her neighbor's roof. She starts teasing men until one afternoon her husband makes an unexpected trip home to get some papers for work. Suddenly Bethany is getting a lot of attention from her husband.

Exhibitionism, Bondage, Spanking... Two stories by two different authors share a common theme...

Don't let the title frighten you off - while the anthology Kink definitely lives up to its name, the kink its stories indulge in will be palatable to most erotica readers. Authors Saskia Walker and Sasha White have penned two tales that complement each other well, and while both stories enjoy a spicy edge, neither move into hard core BDSM.

~Sex, Lies, and Bondage Tape by Saskia Walker~

Sneak backstage at the end of the concert, get Clayton Warren's autograph for a friend, and get out - that was the plan. But the old adage `Best laid plans go astray' was never truer than when Kelly found herself hiding behind a clothes rack in the rock star's dressing room witnessing an encounter with his lover - his male lover!

Forgetting the autograph, she realizes she just needs to get out, and fast. With security hot on her tail, she makes a dash for it, only to be caught by the hunkiest bouncer she's ever seen... One look Tommy Sampson's abs, and she changes her plans once again. She has no intention of getting away from this sexy security guy - at least, not until morning!

Sex, Lies, and Bondage Tape is the first story I've ready by author Saskia Walker, and I know it won't be my last! Walker has created a story that is marvelously complex for an anthology, but never loses its focus. Although there is a side story in the plot, it is really a device to further the romance between our main characters, Kelly and Tommy, and Walker uses these supporting characters brilliantly without confusing the story at all. Instead, the story progresses at a natural pace, making the readers feel almost as if they are voyeurs themselves, indulging in their own bit of `kink'!

The romance between Tommy and Kelly is unconventional, most certainly, but make no mistake that it is a romance. Kelly has run from love for a long time, and makes a practice of loving and leaving the men in her life quickly. Tommy breaks down her barriers, and sneaks inside her defenses before he even realizes he wants more than a brief fling with her...

~Watch Me by Sasha White~

Beth loves her husband, she really does. She knows his promotion is good for them long-term, but the late nights and diminished sex life that goes along with it are starting to get to her. She would never cheat on Grant, but she wants to feel attractive again... When she catches the roofer on top of the house next door gazing at her through her bedroom window, it sparks something inside, and releases her inner wanton. A series of exhibitionist episodes ensue, until Grant catches her in the act and reacts in a way she never anticipated even in her wildest fantasies!

This is actually the second anthology I've read that included Sasha White, and I've been very impressed with her talent both times. With Watch Me, she does something very clever - she writes the first part of the book in such a way that the reader's feelings begin to mirror Beth's, the lead female character. We actually feel her boredom, her frustration, and her worry that she is less desirable. When Grant catches her in the act, the story kicks into high gear. His reaction and her punishment throw both Beth and the reader off kilter - the Grant we thought we knew becomes so much more!

4 out of 5 stars two fun erotic romances.......2007-02-07

"Sex, Lies, and Bondage Tape" by Saskia Walker. Following the Clayton Warren concert, Kelly Burton sneaks back stage to obtain an autograph from the rock star for her injured friend who could not attend. She quickly feels like a shocked voyeur as she catches the hunk with a gay lover. However bouncer Tommy Sampson assumes she is a groupie for the pleasure of anyone backstage. They soon share a kinky night of hard and soft rock and roll, but though she wants round two they failed to exchange information.

"Watch Me" by Sasha White. Most people use coffee to wake up in the morning; Bethany Mack prefers sex, but her spouse Grant has been too busy so he neglects her carnal needs. Though she loves Grant, she begins to perform bad girl acts for strangers. When Grant learns of her performance for a roofer and a bus passenger, he becomes upset and determined to punish his wife by keeping her sexually satisfied whenever he is home because she will only be the bad girl for him.

The sex is fiery kink as the female protagonists in both contributions know what they want and go after their desires. The men are willing partners. Though some of the scenarios seem implausible like the bus (then again there is the When Harry Meets Sally restaurant scene), fans of erotic romance will enjoy the kinkiness of the SW twice the fun (and heat).

Book Description

A new series of romantic adventures about the brave men who battle fires-and the passion they ignite.

Bush pilot Lyndie Anderson lives only for her plane and the open sky. But when she's hired to fly a brooding-but-gorgeous fireman to a forest fire, suddenly she's struggling to douse a burning desire. And although it doesn't show, Griffin Moore starts having feelings for her, too. But he's suffered too much lately to open his heart. So when the two set off sparks, he wonders if Lyndie could be worth the risk...

4 out of 5 stars It was OK, more of a 3 1/2 star book.......2007-08-06

Lyndie Anderson is a bush pilot and a loner. She was raised by her grandfather after her parents died when she was four. Her grandfather taught her a love of flying. But he was a military man and that upbringing taught Lyndie to be independent - and alone. She believes she needs no one. However, she feels for the people of Cooper Canyon, a small town in the jungles of Mexico.

Griffin Moore still hasn't gotten over the loss of 12 lives from the previous fire that he worked on in Idaho; he believes he is responsible for their deaths. He's gone into hiding this past year until he's found by his brother Brody. Brody, trying to get Griffin to deal with what's happened, has gotten Griffin to volunteer to work on another fire - the fire that's affecting the people of Cooper Canyon.

As Griffin overcomes his inner demons dealing with this fire, Lyndie has to deal with her issues - is she really a loner? She believes she doesn't want a relationship - is that really true? Griffin wants a relationship with her, but that's not what she wants, is it?

If I could, I'd give this book 3 ½ stars - I found that I really didn't care for the Lyndie character all that much, so while there is some heat between Lyndie and Griffin, I just didn't care. I have to agree with another reviewer that this book just seemed to be missing something - the plot just seemed to revolve around a fire that just won't die. But I enjoy Jill Shalvis' books. They're fun to read and even a not great book is pretty darn enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Contemporary Romance.......2007-05-14

Griffin Moore lost his sense of self a year ago when twelve fellow wildfire fighters lost their lives on a mountain in Idaho . He's pulled away from his family and friends, doing nothing more than sitting on the beach in California and mourning his loss. That is, until his brother, Brody, shows up, somehow managing to talk him into volunteering to fight a fire in the Mexico mountain lands.

His pilot to San Peubla, the village hoping to escape the burning acreage, is Lyndie Anderson, a tough-as-nails woman who was raised by her military grandfather--and has the "need no one" act down to a science.

I LOVED this book! Not just the sexual chemistry between Griffin and Lyndie, which is undoubtedly hot, but the way the characters were portrayed--their own private needs, desires, and demons.

You won't go wrong with this book. There's action/adventure in the form of the fight against the wildfire; passion not only with the budding relationship between Griffin and Lyndie but that of some important secondary characters, as well; and just a lot of feel-good story interspersed with the kinds of ups and downs that make people tick.

3 out of 5 stars Something was definitely missing.......2005-09-06

I don't quite know why this book did nothing for me. All the words were there and the character's heartaches, but I just didn't feel the emotion. The story line itself also did not have much of a plot to it. It seemed to repeat itself. There is a fire, Griffen comes to help put it out. They think they have it contained, so he goes home. Then it flares up again and he goes back, once again containing it. He goes home again, and when he returns once more there is another flare up. It's like the author couldn't find anything else to write about. The entire story along with the relationships could have easily been wrapped up in a quick short story without dragging it out.
The other reviews were so good that I was expecting more from this author. I just don't know why I didn't feel the same way about this book as they all did. Then again, I am only one opinion. All I can say is if you pay for this book and then share my same sentiments about it, you will be very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must read!.......2005-07-12

Jill turned up the heat in this book! The characters and plot line are very well written and kept me reading until the last page. This is a must read book!!

5 out of 5 stars Smmokin!!.......2004-06-02

WHITE HEAT is smokin' hot...and I'm not talking about the fire! I loved both Griffin and Lyndie. Jill Shalvis does such a wonderful job writing about characters who aren't perfect, whose very flaws make you root for them to succeed. I can't wait to read BLUE FLAME!!

    Book Description

Among the countless gangster films produced by Hollywood, few are as haunting, complex, or ingeniously crafted as White Heat (1948). Students of film history and screen writing will appreciate this treatment—an engaging study of teh various artistic elements that turned what might have been just another gangster film into an innovative classic of the genre and a model of cooperative filmmaking at its best.
Crucial to White Heat's success, McGilligan stresses, was the rare manner in which every aspect of production coalesced: studio, script, cast, crew, and director.

        Book Description

For two and a half years, Ari Fleischer served as the official liaison between the White House and members of the press, acting as the voice of President George W. Bush.

In Taking Heat, Fleischer goes behind-the-scenes in the West Wing, giving his perspectives on:

        • September 11, 2001, its aftermath, and the anthrax scare • The pressure-filled buildup to the war in Iraq and the President's thoughts as the war began • The White House press corps, who they are, and how they report the news

Fleischer believes that the press has a bias in Washington -- It's not a question of partisanship or press driven ideology. It's a focus on conflict they can attach to the President. The White House press corps are masters of the devil's advocate. Fleischer's job was to calmly field their questions, no matter how pointed. He calls the press a tough, sharp, skeptical group. They call him tight-lipped and secretive. But at the end of the day, they had a bond.

Taking Heat is an introspective and analytical exploration of the major political events in the first half of the Bush administration, as well as the candid observations of a professional who stood in the bright lights of the world stage.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars IT'S HIS TURN NOW.......2005-03-09

You probably knew before listening that this would not be an unbiased view. Hearing that he sometimes felt like a "pinata" reinforces this opinion. Well, everyone's entitled to have their say and so this is Ari Fleischer's take and now it's his turn.

Whether one agrees with his views or not, Fleischer served as the White House press secretary during some of our country's most momentous days, from 9/11, the prelude to the war in Iraq, and more.

The author/reader has no love for the press and reiterates what he feels are some of their more frigid exchanges. He has high praise for his former boss, Mr. Bush, extolling his leadership abilities. No surprises here.

While not a seasoned actor (some may take issue with that), he gives a straightforward, listenable reading of his story. Condemn him or praise him, his story is sure to be fodder for debate, diatribe, and discussion.
