Product Description
What happens when an affable parish priest is confronted by a pair of curious second graders who want to help him solve the Mystery of the Eucharist? Why, he turns it into a teaching opportunity for the entire First Communion class. The book is a wonderful combination of storybook, reference book, and keepsake book. The storybook section mixes a bit of 'who-done-it' drama with traditional religious education to uncover the mystery of faith. Father Hugo challenges the children to look throughout the church for clues to solve the Mystery. Then he and the parish staff together explain how the things they find, the prayers they say, and the music they sing all relate to Jesus Christ and the Eucharist. The reference section of the book contains a rendering of 'our church' that identifies the sacramentals and other items the children find. It also includes information children should know when making their First Communion. The last section of the book allows the First Communicant and his or her family to record the events of this special day, making it a lasting keepsake.
Customer Reviews:
Super informative memory book!.......2007-05-13
I bought this book for my daughter's First Communion. I also bought 4 other copies to give to my niece and some of my daughter's friends who were also making their First Communion. My daughter and I have filled out the back memory section which is such a nice reminder of her special day. There is room for comments, feelings and pictures and mementos. I began reading the story to my daughter, but haven't finished it. She enjoyed looking at the map of the church and discussing it. The only reason I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5, is because the story didn't keep my daughter's interest. However, I believe this is because we have really discussed all aspects of the sacrament before Holy Communion. The children in the story are searching for the mystery of the Eucharest. My daughter already understood the mystery. This would be a great book for preparation and then used as a memory book.
My 1st Communion.......2007-05-08
Great! My niece loved this Book and couldn't put it down the entire day. We wrote in it together the day before and then on the day of she read it with other girls her age at her party. It will be a great memory for us to share in years to come!
Wonderful resource.......2007-02-12
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter's birthday so she would have it before she made her First Communion. We read one or two chapters a week as a review of her CCD program (to ensure we covered any gaps). She enjoyed the story and loved filling in the memory pages at the back of the book. What a wonderful Catholic resource! Highly recommended. Also consider getting the companion book Today I Made My First Reconciliation.
simply wonderful.......2003-09-26
This book is a must read not only for children who are about to make their First Communion, but for the parents of the children as well. It's an easy to read book that takes you step by step through the process of this special day in their lives. Children will love it not only for the writing, but for the beautiful illustrations. Parents will love it because it's a wonderful refresher course as they recall their own First Communion.
Mom in San Diego.......2003-05-10
My daughter received this book for her First Communion. We just finished reading it together and I don't know who learned more. The story kept us both entertained. She could identify with the children in the story and loved the 'mystery' aspect. The explanation of things found in the church and the Mass, though detailed, are kid-friendly. I just love everythning about this book and highly recommend it.

Murder Mystery.......2007-05-12
Love these books, enjoyed each one, purchased and read all to date. Arrived promptly.
Just plain fun to read........2007-03-08
Diane Mott Davidson always keeps the reader involved in her writings, and "The Last Suppers" is no exception. From the time Goldie starts her quest to find her missing fiance until they marry, you're wondering what can happen to this single mother next. I enjoy the recipes that come along as part of the package (and so does my family and friends). Hope everyone has as much fun with this novel as I did.
The Last Suppers.......2006-10-25
Goldy Bear, our lovable caterer, is back and waiting at the church for her bridegroom. When Tom calls her and says he cant make it because their priest has been murdered Goldy is devestated. However, this doesnt end her bad day. Tom has been kidnapped by the murderer and no one knows who that is, or where theyve gone. A cryptic note written by Tom at the scene is all the police and Goldy have to go on to find her fiance before its too late.
This is a cute series with great recipes.
Fluffy mysteries at their best!.......2005-04-28
This is the first Diane Mott Davidson that I've gotten to read and I was hooked right away. Similar in form to my other favorites (Dorothy Johnson, Rita Mae Brown, etc.) it took on the hokey beginnings and led their fluffy way down to the solving of the mystery, all the while the main character doesn't skip a beat with her catering.
I know it sounds bad, but I honestly love these types of light and fluffy mysteries, they aren't dark and depressing, they're easy to follow without too many characters and not enough substance. I don't like heavy mysteries that get confusing within the first chapter and get wayyy too descriptive when it comes to the crime scenes or the lack of morals of some of the characters.
This one in particular does seem to be a little bit too hokey in the plot (dead priests and missing soon-to-be husbands) compared to the other books, but it's forgivable!
The Case of the Missing Bridegroom.......2005-03-12
When you're planning to get married and your priest is murdered and your fiance disappears, you know you've had a bad day. That is the case with Goldy Bear whose wedding is called off when Reverend Olson is murdered and Tom Schulz, who is leading the investigation, is suddenly among the missing. As Goldy frantically searches for Tom and tries to solve the murder, she discovers that all is not well in her Episcopalian Church. She uncovers the possibility of adultery, thievery, and a church split over worship style and music. Which of these issues might cause someone to murder their church leader? Both Goldy and Tom's lives are in danger before the murder is solved. This book contains lots of interesting recipes, along with another good mystery by author Davidson.

a must for all .......2007-09-22
great liturgy, eloquent wording, a must for all who worships in the anglican tradition, this is highly recommended by priests in the episcopal church, a change from the book of common prayer, this is rich with beautifully bound prayers.
Excellent modern English throughout!.......2007-08-25
The 1989 English translation of the canticles and psalms in the New Zealand Prayer Book are a work, of which Archbishop Cranmer would be proud. I've seen and used the NZPB canticles printed in other, unofficial prayer books. The settings for Morning and Evening Worship, (to be used mainly by small groups and individuals), are organized by day and time. In addition, these "abbreviated" services mark a return to the cathedral office, which was superceded by the monastic office about 1500 years ago. The New Zealand Prayer Book includes several settings for Eucharist, (Holy Communion), as well as a treasury of traditional and contemporary prayers. One caveat; if you prefer traditional English, the 1662 English Prayer Book, or the current American Prayer Book, ( Rite 1), this Prayer Book will most probably not interest you.
A blessing from New Zealand.......2007-08-23
I purchased this book as a gift for my husband, who was impressed by its contemporary version of The Lord's Prayer. Once we received it, however, we found has much more value than just one expression.
While we don't speak the Maori language, we're delighted that the New Zealand Prayer Book, for the Anglican Church in New Zealand, includes translations of many worship resources in Maori. It's also instructive to read such things as the list of saints whose lives are observed in the church calendar. And the black-and-white ink drawings that illustrate the sections are evocative and intriguing.
What we find most important, however, is the beauty of the language. It took nearly 25 years of consultation to produce this prayer book, and in our reading it was worth every minute. Rarely do we find humanity's spiritual longings, along with its praise to God, so masterfully composed. It's a delight simply to read the prayer book, and even more to use its resources in one's spiritual observance. We highly recommend it.
Really Good!!! .......2007-05-14
The language is fresh and really makes the Book of Common Prayer come alive. Even though it is written for the New Zealand Church and I am American, I find it very useful with extremely beautiful wording. I love how the words, "Eternal Spirit, Living God" is used. In the evening prayers, one of the prayers is:
Eternal Spirit, living God,
in whom we live and move and have our being,
all that we are, have been, and shall be is known to you,
to the very secret of our hearts
and all that rises to trouble us.
Living flame, burn into us,
Cleansing wind, blow through us,
fountain of water, well up within us,
that we may love and prase in deed and in truth.
Simply beautiful! Buy it, you won't regret it.
A Modern Language Prayer Book.......2006-02-21
The Book of Common Prayer is wonderful, but it doesn't always connect with modern congregations. The New Zealand Prayer Book is the ideal solution to this problem. It incorporates the tradition that I value so highly, but it uses phrases that are both beautiful and fresh. Check this out: instead of the tried and true "This is the Word of the Lord" followed by "Thanks be to God," how about "Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church;" then "Thanks be to God." There are several other gems within.

Davidson's triple play.......2007-08-15
This set contains 3 abridged books: "Dying for Chocolate," read by Barbara Rosenblat; "Catering to Nobody," read by Mary Gross; and "The Last Suppers," read by Barbara Rosenblat.
Barbara Rosenblat did a fine job with "Dying," including some different voices for the characters. Her voice was especially good after the car crash, when I could've sworn she was actually crying, and her rendition of Arch, as a whining 11 year-old, was appropriately annoying.
The problem with both of her books, however, was that the CDs aren't divided into tracks, so if I fell asleep, got distracted, or walked away there was no way to get closer to where I'd stopped. Listening to the first CD 4 times got a little old.
Mary Gross did an adequate job with "Catering," which did have tracks but no appreciable voices.
Aside from the missing tracks, I thought the voice levels were weak and uneven on all of the books. I found that I had to turn the volume far beyond that of other books in order to hear it, even right next to me, then, shortly, the voice would be blasting. Additionally, I would have appreciated it if there had been a notice somewhere about the chronological order, which seems to be "Catering," "Dying," and "Suppers." The books refer back to each other, so it would be nice to be able to catch that.
Despite the problems, I gave this set 4 stars. It's a good value, but it could stand some improvements.

Customer Reviews:
Bringing back supper.......2007-04-10
This book is Vollstedt's effort to bring back the tradition of lighter suppers in the evening following the heavier dinner earlier in the day. This is how my mother-in-law cooks during holidays and I like this approach because you don't have a heavy feeling late in the day.
The recipes are easy to understand and follow and not intimidating at all, she took the term easy seriously when putting this book together. Easy does not mean boring or monotonous her recipes cover a wide variety of foods including soups, salads, sandwiches meat, poultry, eggs seafood and fish, pasta, vegetables, pizza stir-fries, grilling and desserts. Two categories salads, and pasta grains and legumes have both a chapter for main dishes and one for side dishes.
Although the focus is easy recipes there is a wide variety to choose from and it would be hard to pick up this cookbook and walk away without some ideas for a good and tasty supper.
Change title to Big Book of Good Suppers.......2005-07-22
This is an excellent book full of simple yet delicious recipes. My mom has other cookbooks by the author and really enjoyed them. Then she stumbled across this one and after I flipped through it, I picked up one for myself. There recipes are very basic and easy to follow and call for normal ingredients. Nothing exotic or specialized. Even my meat and potatoes husband enjoys what I have cooked out of this book.

Book Description
When her family's wagon hits a bump, golden-haired Toby Littlewood is hurled into the sky and lands deep in the snowy forest. There she meets a prickly porcupine, an enormous bear, and a hungry cougar, among other fearsome creatures. Cleverly, she talks each one out of eating her by offering up her fancy clothes. In the end, in a competition to be the grandest beast, the vain animals chase each other around and around a maple tree, where they turn into maple syrup! Isaacs' clever, rollicking text and Teague's animated animals in Toby's clothing are sure to delight the youngest reader.
Customer Reviews:
A Misunderstanding.......2007-08-02
I believe the poor review of one reviewer was based on a misunderstanding of the story. It's a tall tale that relies on hyperbole for its humor and charm. Very young children won't get it, and may be frightened by the scary animals. It takes just a bit of the sophistication, say, of a fifth grader and above, to appreciate a tall tale.
Retold... Revamped... Folktale.......2007-05-07
Isaacs, A. (2006). Pancakes for supper. New York: Scholastic Press
Synopsis: Based on Helen Bannerman's (2003) folktale, The Story of Little Black Sambo, Anne Issacs puts her own twist on this amusing story. Toby is a pioneer girl riding on the back of her Ma and Pa's wagon when suddenly they hit a bump that sends Toby flying high into the air. When she lands with a bound, she is presented one by one of several animals that would like to create menace for Toby. In an effort to appease each animal, Toby offers each of them an article of clothing. The animals find hilarity in these pieces of clothing and go away feeling they are each "the grandest beast, west or east". Readers find each animal's reaction hilarious and ridiculously funny. In Bannerman's tale, the tigers melt into butter. However, in Isaacs' version, the animals' melted form is absorbed by the maple tree which produces the sweetest tasting maple syrup thanks to an exuberant woodpecker. Toby and her family have quite a feast and continue their journey westward with full bellies and big smiles.
Evaluation: Anne Isaacs and Mark Teague pair up to make quite an amazing twist on Bannerman's (2003) original tale. Readers are drawn into this story by its lyrical language, purposeful rhythm, and fantastic illustrations. It is quite a treat! Teague's brightly colored oil paintings mimic 1930's American cinematic pop art. His vivid illustrations and imagination capture Toby's quick wit and the animals' boastful swaggering pride. The energetic illustrations are a perfect match to the bouncy and lyrically written text. The New England forest landscape with its indigenous North American animals and Toby's plucky song about her clothing, do not make this story an instant classical tall tale. However, Isaacs gives this classic tale a new and spirited heroine.

Delightful book with wonderful illustrations.......2007-04-19
Pancakes For Supper is a delightful book. The illustrating is excellent and most of the fun of this retelling of an old story. My kids love this book and never fail to laugh at the illustrations. As they'd say, "It's an owner, Dad!"
a little scary.......2007-03-05
Toby is a young girl that takes a fall out of her parent's wagon. She finds her self in the forest. She encounters many animals along the way. The animals try to eat the girl. Each one she meets she trades in an article of clothing in exchange for her life! Does her trick work? Will she escape the forest alive? Read this book to find out!
Hilarious tale of forest adventure........2006-12-10
Anne Isaacs' PANCAKES FOR SUPPER! receives Mark Teague's fun and large, colorful illustrations as it tells of Toby, all dressed up in bright new clothes when she's hurled out of her parents' wagon and deep into the forest, there to meet a hungry wolf! A cougar is next - and only her cleverness can keep her from being eaten in this hilarious tale of forest adventure.

Book Description
From a passionate and talented chef who also happens to be an Episcopalian priest comes this surprising and thought-provoking treatise on everything from prayer to poetry to puff pastry. In
The Supper of the Lamb, Capon talks about festal and ferial cooking, emerging as an inspirational voice extolling the benefits and wonders of old-fashioned home cooking in a world of fast food and prepackaged cuisine. This edition includes the original recipes and a new Introduction by Deborah Madison, the founder of Greens Restaurant in San Francisco and author of several cookbooks.
Customer Reviews:
Full-throttle joy of living.......2006-09-06
This is one of the most exceptional books I've read. Bold, funny, grumpy, and wise, it is a beautifully-written cookbook and dazzling radiance of commentary.
To read this fine book is like sitting on a stool in Capon's kitchen, listening to this old-school master talk (as he slow-cooks) on subjects as diverse as onions, knives, wine, love, dinner parties, and baking soda ("the Most Extraordinary Ordinary Thing in the World").
The thing I most appreciate about this book is its unapologetic, hurricane-force, declaration of JOY with life and life's Creator. "Supper of the Lamb" is almost operatic in its celebration of God, real foods, the earth, and wine. The book is a zero-tolerance zone for synthetic foods, ideas or people.
BE WARNED: "Supper of the Lamb" was first published 37 years ago. The language flow is so beautifully full that it's a little like eating lamb after decades of consuming malted milk balls and pork rinds.
Meditations on Food.......2003-12-31
Food writing is a difficult task. It's much easier to jot down a few (or many) recipes that describe the feelings, emotion and psychology of the food experience. One advantage that food writing has over, say car writing or sports writing, is the multitude of functionality. One can raise, prepare, buy, eat and savor food. It is used for romance, for celebration, for friendship, bereavement or religious fulfillment. In fact, to some it is almost a religious experience.
This is especially true of the author, Robert Capon, a priest in the Episcopal church. He can be deep, funny, poignant or edifying. These various essays touch on many subjects, all of them related one way or another to food. His comments like, "God may be simple but simplicity makes a bad god." are par for the course.
His strong likes (natural food, discipline, earnest preparation and freinds) and dislikes (fancy stoves, kitchen gadgets, easy recipes, strong cologne, arriving late) are fully detailed. A compendium of recipes follow the essays.
Joy to the World!.......2003-09-22
I came across The Supper of the Lamb at a particularly deep and prolonged nadir in my life, and not being particularly religious, I was sceptical. O what joy! What love! What exuberance, richness, fertility and fancy! What unbounded wonder! Father Capon shows us the wonder in ordinary things, and shows us how to look, really look, at humble, quotidian things to see the glory in them -- the chapter on a simple brown onion is worth the entire book. So is the chapter on wine. Again and again, I've stretched out my hand and the right book was there. Thank you Father Capon for showing me the way back to laughter, love and celebration! L'chaim!
A classic to return to again and again.......2002-10-29
This book was my first taste of Robert Farrar Capon's writings. One of those underground treasures which makes its way by word of mouth, The Supper of the Lamb was a seminal book in my spiritual and literary development, along with his book, The Parables of the Kingdom. It may include recipes, but The Supper of the Lamb is a cookbook for life.
Each chapter offers lyrical insight on what it means to be human. Read about cutting an onion in "The First Session" and you'll never take an onion for granted again. "Wave Breast and Heave Shoulder" is one of the most beautiful and biblical passages in the entire book. I have read the final pages of "The Burning Heart" many, many times and never fail to be moved. Some sections of the book are reminiscent of Annie Dillard's descriptive style in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek or some of the best of M.F.K. Fisher's writings. Capon's salty observations balance the high spirituality, creating a complex blend of philosophy and kitchen craft.
As Capon himself says, "We were given appetites, not to consume the world and forget it, but to taste its goodness and hunger to make it great." This book continues to inspire my writing, my cooking, and my spirituality. If you want a flavorful literary feast, buy The Supper of the Lamb. I highly recommend Robert Farrar Capon's other books as well. Each one is a treasure.
Eating with Bob Capon.......2002-09-02
I grew up around Bob Capon. My father is also an Episcopal priest, and our families often got together to break bread. The kitchen was the place to be. This book, which I hadn't read for many years, brought back lots of memories. Capon was one of the first "crazy" people I ever met. (I was around 9 years old.) I am a better person for it. Food and God. God and Food. They go together especially well in this book.

If you are looking for the proper way to do anything in church this is the place to look. It has solved many a dilemma for me. It is great to have an authority to whom one can turn instead of just relying on the good old Espiscopal, "We've always done it this way." It doesn't mean you can't follow your own parochial traditions, but at least you'll know you're playing by house rules when you do! I am a bit of a nit-picker, so I found this book to be ever so helpful.
The liturgy accessible to all.......2006-08-27
The most appealing aspect of this book is that it allows everyone access to what is normally the province of the clergy. That is a good thing because it is often forgotten in churches, even the Episcopal Church, that liturgy is the work of the people, not something to be imposed from on high by the rector.
In typical Anglican fashion, Galley attempts to walk the via media. He gives readers broad latitude in shaping their own liturgy while explaining what many Episcopalians can not answer: why do we do that? While some of the practices he endorses and not for everyone, this book is an excellent resource for anyone with an interest in the liturgy of the Episcopal Church.
Useful guide to Liturgy.......2006-07-10
This book walks Priest, Deacon, Acolyte and lay ministers through the liturgy in a parallel guide, so you can see what each person needs to be doing and what others are doing at the same time. The book also discusses why things are done the way they are and when there are different approaches which is preferable. Highly recommended.
The Ceremonies of the Eucharist: A Guide to Celebration.......2000-06-07
The Ceremonies of the Eucharist is an excellent guide for those persons responsible for Eucharistic worship. It is particularly helpful for clergy and lay people seeking ways to improve and deepen the quality of their liturgy (worship services) through the introduction of well thought out and theologically sound ceremonies. Galley's book is intended largely for an Episcopal readership as he seeks to create the liturgical environment intended by the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. What makes this book especially useful is that he not only explains how things might be done but also discusses how differnces in size of congregation will effect choices. Overall he achieves a good balance between formality and hospitality in worship. The book is Anglican in its spirituality and breadth. Non-episcoplains would find this book interesting as an additional resource in deciding what shape and style their worship might take.
