What an AWESOME book!!.......2007-10-02
I received this cookbook last Christmas from one of my clients. I LOVE this book! I have made SO many of the recipes. Better Homes and Gardens sure knows how to make a dinner flavorful. I purchased this book to give to another VERY busy individual who also has a family that depends on them for dinner. Put the ingredients in and you are DONE!! Some recipes require browning of the meat. Please do this. It makes it VERY tasty.
definitely alot of variety in recipes..........2007-10-01
Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes (Better Homes & Gardens)
The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that you REALLY don't know what you're getting until you have it in hand and you're reading it...This cookbook is no different...I expected alot of crockpot recipes, but I didn't expect some of the recipes with such unusual ingredient combinations...And what's with adding mushrooms so much or making it spicy hot so much *ICK*...you know, just because you CAN mix things together, it doesn't mean you SHOULD...Oh well, for what it is, it's a good cookbook but it could be better so 4 out of 5 stars it is!
yummy food.......2007-08-11
I am enjoying this cookbook. Out of the last about 6 recipes I tried, I liked 5 of them so that's pretty good!
Great meals.......2007-06-08
I highlight all the favorites and there are lots to highlight in this simple to make cookbook.
It's OK, .......2007-04-14
I was looking for more basic and simple recipes that it seems to eschew.

Cook Book Review: Slow Cooker Recipes 2.......2007-02-11
The Better Homes and Gardens' "Biggest Book of Slow Cooker Recipes Vol. 2" (pub. 2006) is a kitchen necessity. A sequel to the equally valuable and wonderful Better Homes and Gardens' slow cooker recipes first edition (pub. 2002), this second edition takes off with a whole new variety of organized and straight forward delectable recipes, to satisfy most pallets. It includes hints, tips, and special instructions from food professionals, as well as two bonus chapters of 'light' dishes and '5-ingredient' dishes. All recipes have instructions for multiple slow cooker sizes, as well as for dinner for two.
Bon-appetite!
Flavorful (and some ethnic) slow cooker recipes.......2006-12-29
First of all, let me say, I love to cook with my crock pot!! I can prepare heathful meals without the last-minute fuss. What a wonderful invention!
Having said that, one of the disappointments I have found with many slow cooker cook books is that the recipes tend to be bland. When I ran across this book, I was excited to see the variety of recipes. While I wouldn't say that my family has liked every recipe in this book 100%, they have given most recipes that I have prepared the "thumbs up" to fix again and I, personally, have found the recipes to be more flavorful than some of the other slow cooker cook books which I own.
If you are looking for recipes that have a more ethnic flavor or more spice, this is your book. There are such things as a Tandoori Chicken or a Carribean Fish Stew, but they aren't all this hot. The ingrediants are readily available and the instructions are clear. If you are looking for some slow cooker recipes that are a little more off the traditional beaten crock pot path, I would definitely recommend this book.
Book Description
This classic guide to artisanal bread is back with a fresh new look, just in time to take advantage of the recent surge in popularity of at-home baking. As an award-winning baker and member of a religious brotherhood, Peter Reinhart skillfully blends the two aspects of his life in this eloquent guide to creating wonderful bread. More than 30 delicious recipes, from perfect white bread to pumpernickel and corn, will appeal to both the novice and experienced baker. Reinhart's graceful commentary accompanies readers every step of the way, and illustrates how the artistry of baking, especially using the slow-rise method, is a metaphor for a purposeful life driven by service and charity. Cookies, sticky buns, stromboli, pizza crust, and "the world's greatest brownies" are some of the delectable dividend recipes included.

Peter Reinhart fan.......2007-05-12
If you love Peter Reinhart, you'll want to add this book to your collection.
True, go for the Bread Baker's apprentice, or Crust and Crumb if you don't have any of his books yet. They are both must haves and Bread Baker's Apprentice is probably the most popular book out there right now for the home baker and with good reason.
But if you want to know more about Peter, and where he started from buy this lovely book. Plus it has some great recipes! The corn bread recipe alone is worth the price!
Searching For a Cogent Thought - Or, a Palatable Recipe .......2006-10-26
.
........A book searching for a cogent thought, and a palatable recipe.
I have never comfortably embraced this author, his recipes, or his mode of expressing himself, and this effort in no way reverses that judgment.
I find his books pedantic and inflated. The aimless text asserts such device as the sound of crust "causing a religious experience." Since he avoids all specific association with a traditional chantry, the context of such contrivances is completely confused and disordered. He speaks as well of channeling and alchemy.
The religiously disjointed text embroiders such balmy combinations as traditional Buddhist expressions indiscriminately combined with those of Tao, along with other platitudinous Eastern religious utterance; he sometimes culminates his thoughts with the lyrics of Van Morison. This book is embarrassingly inane.
The text much reminds me of the old joke "If you can remember the 60's - you weren't there!" The person writing this manufactured artifice superficially speaks to "the great cosmic law," Allah, and Kung Fu all implying a weakness of intellect and conspicuous foolishness.
His recipes are awkward by today's standard. They require much sugar, salt, and commercial yeast. His corn bread recipe calls for one-and-a-half Cups of Sugar! The retarding methods are less than au courant; moreover, he uses volume measurements instead of weight.
This book, as the rock stars it quotes; fails the passage of time.
Not for everyone.......2006-01-29
Just a warning to those getting into bread baking in order to get healthier breads. This is not the place to do that. Much too much emphasis on sugary recipes.
I rarely get rid of a cookbook but I couldn't wait to give this away--to a sugar fan.
Brother Junipers Bread Book.......2005-08-29
I like most books about baking an I like this book, But it is very hard to understand for someone that may be new to baking. I would not buy again if I had it to do over..
Winning Bread Recipes.......2005-07-05
If you want to learn to make bread the right way then you much have Brother Juniper's recipes. He is a expert in breadbaking and the winner of many bake offs.

Excellent and Easy To Use Recipies.......2007-01-16
I gave this book to my daughter-in-law as a gift. I also own a copy. I use this book extensively with my slow-cooker. The recipes are very good and very easy. When I found the book at amazon.com, I was very excited.
The best I've found!.......2005-07-21
I have two slow cookers, and always want to use them, but can never really come up with much more than your basic Pot Roast or Beef Stew. When summer hits I would love to be able to use my slow cookers more, to keep from heating up the kitchen AND to keep my prep work to a minimum. I have seven or eight slow cooker cookbooks, and most seem to be variations on the same old recipes. This book is so different! The recipes are unique and intriguing, and the photos are gorgeous. I've made two recipes in two days and both are keepers! The Cantonese Pork is wonderful, and the Spicy Italian Beef was the easiest and most flavorful beef we've had in a long time! I've got another 10 or 15 recipes marked to try in the coming weeks, and I can't wait! Some recipes call for some so-called 'convenience foods' like Cream of Mushroom Soup or an envelope of Italian Dressing Mix, which I appreciate. I love making things from scratch, but sometimes lowfat or low-sodium convenience food options are practical and tasty, and they can speed up preparation. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone looking to expand their menu options for their slow cookers!
Great Slow-Cooker Cookbook.......2005-02-05
This was my first slow-cooker cookbook and it's better than the newer ones that I've received since then. There are plenty of photos for those who need pictures with their recipes. I have marked about 30 must try dishes already from this book because they all look so easy and appetizing at the same time! And I'm hardly through it! This will definitely be an asset in our kitchen for years to come!

Very good cookbok for Whole Foods.......2006-11-18
I am someone who prefers to cook with whole foods and all natural ingredients. I never want to use pre-mixed items like cream-of-anything soup, salad dressing or taco mixes, so I was happy that all the recipes in this book rely on fresh ingredients. I have a well stocked kitchen (with many spices) so I admit, that has helped with some of the more elaborate dishes. Overall, all the recipes I have tried so far have been flavorful, though in some cases I choose to add additional salt, pepper or other spices, but that is a matter of preference. I think this is a great book with a wide variety of dishes. It is worth a try if you hate store bought mixes and "recipes" that rely on pre-mixed condiments for flavor.
Recipes Did Not Sell Me.......2003-12-30
I was not happy with this book. The recipes they provided were not recipes you would use on an everyday basis. In my mind, I was looking for rib, roast, and chile recipes. I found myself just thumbing through the book with no desire to cook anything in there. I believe there are better books out there. Save your money.
Picky eater.......2001-12-01
I'm sure this book may be helpful for some people, but I was looking for more simple recipes for a very picky eater. Things that had more pasta, ground meat, etc. There are things in some of these recipes that I don't even know what they are or where to get them, and I'm sure my son wouldn't eat. Also some of the prep time was quite long, I want things I can put in there and forget it. If I spend 45 minutes preparing a meal, I shouldn't have to wait 2 or more hours on the slow cooker to finish it.
Love my Crockpot, this book helps me use it!.......2001-10-21
I love my crockpot. I use it all the time. It is so easy to have a complete meal on the table. Cheaper cuts of meat come out tasting great, no hot ovens and stove tops for little fingers to get burned on, easy to use, and good results.
This book is a great resource for Crockpot cooking. The recipes turn out great. Almost everything is easy to make and there are not any unusual or exotic ingredients called for in the meals.
There are a few good crockpot recipe books available that are still in print. This is one that I am glad I have on my shelves.
It was OK.......2000-10-03
When I ordered this cookbook I was not expecting what I recieved. I wanted a book that had meals that used mostly what I had on hand. I wanted guidance on how to cook in a crock pot basic meals. I have made a few recipes in this book and they were ok, nothing outstanding. Most of the recipes I would not make. Hope this is helpful.

Love it!.......2007-01-11
My fiance and I have this cook book and we especially love the chili and the pot roast recipes. We have also gotten this as a gift and recommended recipes to our family members. It is very easy to follow and actually has food that you will eat!
Betty Crocker Crock Pot Review.......2002-10-15
I thought the book is very dated, and the receipes lacked flair. I would have liked a book that is more recent, with nutritional breakdowns included.
A good start.......2002-02-18
I just got a slow cooker for Xmas the recipes are easy to follow and so far tasty. A good introduction to my new way of cooking hearty meals in my busy life.
One of my favorites!.......2001-09-23
I have three top favorite crock pot cook books and this is one of them.
This cookbook is well organized with easy to follow recipes. The dinners turn out well. Most of the meals use on hand ingredients with very few exotic requests.
I am a big fan of crock pot cooking. If you are looking for a good book with lots of yummy recipes, this is one of my favorites.
Used this for years--lots of yummy recipes.......2001-01-16
This is a book filled with simple crock pot recipes that my family loves. In fact, my husband has asked me to cook Apple Pork Roast & Vegetables when we hosted his family for dinner. I make Lentil-Mushroom Soup frequently and Chicken & Sausage Gumbo is also good. If you watch your fat intake, you will need to adjust the recipes--use low fat meats, cut out the recommended oil, etc. Overall worth having in your crock pot cookbook collection.

Not Impressed.......2007-09-16
I'm disappointed with this book. I was looking for something with quick man-pleasing recipes using common ingredients. These recipes require too much prep, and often use odd stuff like dry wine and pearl onions. Just the thought of trying to find some of these ingredients at my grocery store deters me from trying any of the recipes.
The Slow Cooker book I was looking for.......2005-11-21
I wanted a basic but diverse slow cooker book, with kid friendly recipes. I also wanted real ingredients, not just "add two cans of soup" recipes. That weeded out almost all the cookbooks on the bookstore shelf. Best Loved had a good range of recipes, including versions of things I already make (like pea soup, or marinara sauce), so I took it home, and I'm glad I did.
These recipes vary from basic family fare to more complex flavors, and so far all of the recipes I've tried have gone over well. I can't wait to try the hot fudge cake!
Also great if you need to lose a few pounds..........2004-03-19
Watching your weight and what you're eating can be a full time occupation but I don't have a personal chef at home to do it for me. THIS BOOK IS REALLY EXCELLENT. It has a lot of tasty recipes and although this book is not intended as a weight loss diet, it has recipes that are pretty healthy! I especially like the soup recipes, they really look pretty healthy, there are a bunch that utilize lots of veggies and different spices. A lot of the recipes don't say anything about butter or margarine but the food turns out quite flavorful. By reading through the recipes, you can assemble a nice collection of spices that will really flavor up a lot of your meals. It just takes practice.
Since a crockpot can yield quite a bit, depending on your family size you could have plenty of leftovers. You can freeze some of it and have it a week or two later for some variety.
The other thing I really liked about this book is that it has a nice sturdy hardcover you can wipe off, the pages are thick and glossy, the photographs are very inviting and there are lots of them. There is one recipe per page with nice large clear letters so the text doesn't look so tiny and voluminous to appear like the dish takes a lot of effort. Overall, a really nice book!
A great first book of slow cooker recipes........2002-12-30
There are lots of different recipes in here. But the best thing is that they aren't all "add a can of cream of whatever soup." There are a few of those, too, but these are actual recipes that anyone can make. You throw everything together and a few hours later, you have dinner!
Some of the recipes include pictures; most don't. One thing that's a little surprising is the variety of recipes. There are dinner recipes, of course, but there are also appetizers and hot beverages, sides, and desserts. (Fruit and Nut Baked Apples! Yum!)
If you're not already a slow cooker convert, what are you waiting for?? This is not just for people who work all day, this is for anyone who has errands to run, and doesn't want to rush dinner at the last minute. With this cookbook, you will find something to please everyone in your family, from elaborate (spareribs simmered in orange sauce) to simple (macaroni and cheese).
Lots of Choices.......2000-11-14
This cookbook is filled with lots of great recipes of many kinds. I have found more useful and very tasty recipes in this book than any of the other slow cooker cookbooks I have. It is well-organized and the directions are very clear. I highly recommend it for someone who has just gotten or is getting a slow cooker. Is a great source of new ideas for someone who already has a slow cooker.
Book Description
Remember the slow-cooker? It's time to take it out of the garage and throw away those old, unworkable recipes. The Slow-Cooker Ready & Waiting Cookbook features 160 updated classics and delicious new recipes designed specifically for slow-cookers.
Because they benefit from a long, slow simmer at a gentle, continuous temperature, certain dishes-soups, stews, chilis, and pot roasts-have always tasted better when prepared in a slow-cooker. Rick Rodgers has gone beyond the tried and true and has developed an impressive array of foods that are better slow-cooked than when prepared in a conventional oven: Tuscan Beans with Sage and Garlic, Beef Stroganoff, and delectable desserts like Double Strawberry Cheesecake and the creamiest Crhme Caramel. There are also side dishes, relishes, and vegetables that use the slow-cooker when the oven is occupied. Recipes for seafood chowders, chicken fricassees, braised brisket, corned beef, and stuffed breast of veal round out this collection.

Best Slow Cooker to Date For Me, Possibly You.......2007-04-17
Why is this the best to date for me on slow cooking? Because he adds some outstanding extras that others don't: browning, broiling, sauteeing meats first; skimming fat and reducing sauces at end, etc.
Also, his variety and sophistication of recipes is outstanding for my tastes. Feast on likes of: Short Ribs with Garden Patch Horseradish Sauce; Pork, Port and Chestnut Ragout; Chicken, Tomato and Tortilla Soup; Erna's Sauerbraten; Chicken with Mushrooms and Artichokes in Red Wine Soup; Turkey Breast Saltimbocca; Pear and Hazelnut Brown Betty.
160 delectable offerings with the normal wide menu offering from Appetizers to Desserts. Only downer is no color photos, but this tends to drive the purchase price down which is nice.
A keeper for the slow cooker who wants to go a step up in his offerings.
Amazing!.......2007-03-11
If you are looking for a slow cooker book that is simple and delicious, you have found it!
...And I have only just read it.....................2007-02-25
Haven't cooked any of the recipes from this new aquisition just yet, but reading through the first 70 or so pages (I read cookbooks like some read novels), I see that the recipes are not just your average re-hashed beef stew, chili, chicken soup fare. Having said that, I did spot all these classics in one form or another, but not the same ol' boring versions as so many slow cooker books are crammed full of.
I am the type of cook that just uses recipes (generally speaking) as jumping off points to the actual end result, and these look to be particularly inspiring. Don't know how useful my review is, since I haven't actually TASTED anything from the book, but what I've seen so far sure sounds yummy.....................
Great tastes!.......2006-11-11
Nicely written recipies, easy to understand and no fancy ingredients or techniques needed. Some recipies take longer due to pre-cooking browning, etc., but worth the extra effort.
Very good cook book, worth acquiring.......2006-06-29
The layout in my '98 paperback edition is quaint, at best, but the information is top-notch, an interesting assortment of dishes, most of which I'm interested in making. While this book isn't as pretty as some others, the information is unique, I like Rick Rodgers' writing style -- lots of useful information and food combinations I don't imagine that I'd have ever thought of. I'd like to see this cook book updated, I'd buy another copy. It would be really great if it had a spiral binding, so that it would lay flat -- I love details like that, making things truly useful.
This is a good cook book, buy it!
