1 out of 5 stars Broken Hearted Mom.......2007-04-05

This book is a total joke. My daughter and I had several sessions with Frances Firman Solario. She ruined my family. Frances Firman Solario did not encourage forgiveness like she writes in her book. She cast both mother and daughter against one another. My daughter and I were on better terms before we started seeing Frances Firman Solario. My daughter and I are no longer on speaking terms. My family is broken. I highly would NOT recommend this book or recommend that you use Frances Firman Solario as a therapist.

Above average writing sets this book apart from others of its genre. Stories are engrossing without seeming contrived. All in all, a well put together collection of stories, quotes and cartoons that ACTUALLY is inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars love2read.......2003-04-09

This is a beautiful book of short stories about the laughter & tears experienced between mother and daughter and, in some instances, 3 generations of mothers & daughters. There were a few stories that I really didn't see the point in and didn't understand why there were included, but all-in-all, the stories made me laugh and cry. I purchased the book as a mother's day gift for my mom, but had to read it myself first!

It's a great gift for yourself or mother/daughter. It's an enjoyable and sometimes tear-jerking read and sometimes a mirror of a relationship you have/had or would like to have.

"Far away in the remote, untraveled southwestern French countryside, there is a small village which contains two homes, an eleventh-century church, and a very special farm known as Pistoulet." Thus begins The Secrets of Pistoulet, a charming and beautiful little book filled with food, magic, and love. Part fiction, part cookbook, this richly illustrated book is reminiscent of the popular Griffin and Sabine, with its collection of letters to be removed from envelopes, and recipes tucked into their own little pockets. Drawings, photographs, snippets of diaries, and mysterious maps decorate this tale of Mademoiselle J., who arrives at Pistoulet with a broken heart. There she is welcomed by the farm's tenants: Madame Claude; Monsieur Andre; the black dog, Marcel; and a chicken that lays golden eggs. Soon, such soul-strengthening dishes as Potage of Babble (guaranteed to cease excessive chatter), Potage of Passion (Cooks beware: this soup has been known to result in marriage proposals!), and Tart of Sunshine (sure to heat both body and soul) have Mademoiselle J. on the road to recovery.

The Secrets of Pistoulet packs a lot of charm into a small package. Readers who love to cook will want to try these simple, tasty recipes, though it may be difficult in some cases to follow the directions exactly ("Go to the nearest fishing port and acquire moules from the fisherman with the largest pecs and most tattoos....). Those who don't will be more than content to simply imagine these sumptuous meals as they, along with Mademoiselle J., attempt to unlock Pistoulet's magical mysteries.

4 out of 5 stars Very special.......2006-11-02

I originally bought this book because I was so pleased with the Pfaltzgraff pattern of the same name, and I was curious as to what the book might be about. It was a delightful surprise! It's really a little work of art more than it is a "book" per se. It's delightfully arranged, with little secret pockets, recipe cards, windows, vellums and peek-throughs. And it's very well-made - feels good to just hold it in your hands and turn the pages. Oh, yes, there's also a Story there! Well - mostly it's "hints" at a Story. The Story seems at first to revolve mainly around the culinary adventures of Mlle. J in various lovely provincial settings, but it's not just cooking she's learning: it's magic.

I'm spelling "Story" here with a capital "S" because it's a BIG Story! You can tell that the author/artist really has lovingly created an entire, finely-detailed world in her mind on which she bases this Story. The glimpses of it in this little book and its sequels piqued my sense of wonder and left me hungering for more (yes, I immediately went out and bought both sequels - and hope there will be more.) I keep going back and re-reading all three now, when I need a little something to lighten my day. Once I even tried some of the recipes and have to say it made cooking seem more fun to me (I normally only cook because that's what you have to do in order to eat!)

Mind you - I'm normally a "big, fat, thick novel" type of reader, so it kind of makes me nuts that Kolpen hasn't [yet] written the full novel version of her Story, but, I am not above begging... :)

5 out of 5 stars For the wondering, wandering many..........2004-07-05

Enchantment, beautiful artwork, and empathic cooking mark the success of this book that touches readers' hearts in places often forgotten.

At first, because of a marketing display at a local department store, I thought The Secrets of Pistoulet was not for individual sale, but could only be obtained by purchasing Pistoulet dinnerware. The book so touched me, I briefly considered buying the darn dishes! Luckily, I found the book right here, standing on its own. It hardly needs its own china to promote sales; in fact, the opposite may just be true. This little book is a great marketing ploy to sell the whimsical, pastel dishes that are said to be the very plates used to serve the magical Potages created at Pistoulet. A marketing genius, I tell you, but that is beside the point.

The book is lovely, simple and true-to-heart. Tucked with mouth-watering recipes, paintings, photographs and excellent folklore, this book reminds us that food does not just feed the stomach - it feeds the soul. I plan to keep it displayed in my kitchen with a simple spray of herbs and oils, to be read by any lost soul who happens to pass by...

5 out of 5 stars Food for the soul.......2004-05-08

This book is one that I share with all my dear friends. I read it to a friend of mine who had just lost her dad, with whom she had sat as he lay dying of cancer in the hospital. She was returning home after settling his estate and stayed the night in my home. I read it to her as she fell asleep. When she awoke the next morning, she said that it was her first night of peaceful sleep in a long time. My reading this story to her aloud had had touched her so deeply that she decided to share it at her father's memorial service. I loved Griffin and Sabine as well, but the two books should not be compared. I loved this as much as Like Water for Chocolate and Babette's Feast. A ne pas manquer.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Tale.......2003-02-16

A magical tale of food, wine, France, and flowers, Secrets of Pistoulet is a great book to read and cherish. I love the accompanying dishware recently launched by Pfaltzgraf. A perfect hostess gift-- the only problem is that you may change your mind in the last minute and keep it yourself.

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!.......2001-08-24

Compared to Hodgson and Bantock, which this book is imitative of, this book is boring, non-creative, and the art, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired. I got it as a gift and wish I could return it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is IMPOSSIBLE to read!!!!!!.......2007-04-14

I am having a hard time getting through this book--it is very hard to read with tears in your eyes. I just bought it, and have only read a few entries, but it is great. I am not a "Chicken soup book" fan. They have over-saturated the market in my opinion. However, this title caught my eye, and was hard to resist. I now plan to order copies for my dear friends for Mother's day gifts.

5 out of 5 stars The Bond of Mother and Daughter Gave Me Goosebumps!.......2007-03-13

As always, I delight in reading Chicken Soup for the Soul. I can tell you without reservation, this book, Chicken Soup for the Soul "Celebrating Mothers and Daughters" is truly unique. The stories are from the heart, a genuine bond only a mother and daughter could hold or understand. So tender while tears of elation, sadness and hilarity pour down the cheeks. This is a must read for all mothers and daughters as it hammers hard the love we share. Kudos, Chicken Soup for the Soul...you've done it again!

Book Description

Three strangers, hungry and tired, pass through a war-torn village. Embittered and suspicious from the war, the people hide their food and close their windows tight. That is, until the clever strangers suggest making a soup from stones. Intrigued by the idea, everyone brings what they have until-- together, they have made a feast fit for a king! In this inspiring story about the strength people possess when they work together, Muth takes a simple, beloved tale and adds his own fresh twist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great story for kids.......2007-02-05

I agree with much of what the other reviewers have said about the illustrations. The illustrations are beautiful and really add to the experience of reading the story. My kids loved this book and we've read it together a number of times at bedtime. They like the little girl who approaches the monks out of curiousity (one of my daughters noted that the youngest monk looks like the Avatar from the cartoon series). They also contemplated at what point the monks must have removed the stones from the soup.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book any age.......2006-02-02

A book you won't mine reading every night. Great story with great drawings...My 4 year old loves it so do I.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2005-09-09

Muth's watercolors are delicate and expressive, and work beautifully in retelling this familiar story. Oh, the wanderers are poor monks, and the setting isn't European, but it's still the same story we all love.

And that's why I chose this book over Muth's other children's books. I've enjoyed his adult artwork, and the paintings in the other kids' books are, if anything, better than the ones here. I just couldn't picture my four-year-old (check the suggested age groups) getting much out of Tolstoy's three existential questions, though. Maybe your kid is a bit more advanced, but Stone Soup seems to be a better match to this pre-schooler's philosophical needs.

4 out of 5 stars Stone Soup Forever.......2007-07-28

This is a timeless story that I have told to firstly my children, and now my grandchildren. We cook 'stone soup' on many occasions, and even finicky eaters cannot resist the soup after they know the story. My eldest grandson (13) has his favourite stone that has served as the basis for the soup in recent times. He takes great delight in serving stone soup to his friends and showing them his 'stone'. The story I heard as a child was of a French soldier returning home after a Napolionic War where the village he entered was devestated by war etc. The underlying context of shared co-operation is wonderful example of how we can all get along together if we all put in something....

"Three soldiers trudged down a road in a strange country. They were on their way home from the wars. Besides being tired, they were hungry. In fact, they hadn't eaten nothing for two days."

Follow how three soldiers make a delicious soup "fit for a king" with a stone.

Try reading this book with your child and make some stone soup together for lunch or dinner. Supervise carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Stone Soup by Marcia Brown.......2006-07-23

I remember several stories that I loved very much as a child. One of them is the story of "Stone Soup". I saw it on the Captain Kangaroo television show--- the Captain read the story and the illustrations were shown page by page. I was delighted and spellbound. Everyone knows that you don't give anything away. To do so would be very foolish. Yet, in this story the people do give food away! And in the end, everyone shares in a feast because each one provided one small part of the meal. This is very moving to me. And a lesson that shapes my life every day. Thank you Marcia Brown for your retelling of this timeless tale, and to Bob Keeshan, the Captain, for bringing me this joyful tale. Larry Host, Sacramento, California, July 22, 2006

Georgeanne Brennan became enamored of the concept of the potager, or kitchen garden, while living in the south of France, and has created potagers everywhere she's lived in the nearly three decades since then. The potager, explains Brennan, is more than a garden: it's a chance to observe the seasons, a provider of ingredients for signature local dishes, and a great social democratizer that keeps neighbors in touch as they share their bounty with each other.

One of the main features of a potager is that it is intended as a year-round garden, rather than just a summer, or harvest, garden. To that end, Brennan explains which plants do well in different seasons and how to stagger the plantings during seasonal transition periods so as to use the space efficiently throughout the year. The garden itself can be quite small--9 feet by 12 feet can keep a family of four in fresh produce. Like a potager, this guide is small and sweet. It's attractively illustrated with Melissa Sweet's watercolors, and includes 25 easy recipes that make stars of simple, fresh ingredients. --Barrie Trinkle

Book Description

The tradition of the kitchen garden, or potager, has for centuries been a cornerstone of the French country way of life-a year-round communion between the kitchen and the garden culminating in simple, gratifying meals prepared fresh with the flavors of the season. Taking up where the very popular Potager left off, In the French Kitchen Garden is a lovingly written, beautifully illustrated guide to cultivating a potager. Georgeanne Brennan imparts her passion for the potager while offering advice on adapting a kitchen garden to any climate or space. Punctuated with impromptu recipes for delicious dishes incorporating the fresh produce of each season, this book encourages everyone to adopt ?the creative, relaxed style of the French country cook.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great value for the price...........2003-03-23

At first glance you might think IN THE FRENCH KITCHEN GARDEN is nothing more than a good door prize. This pretty little book is not very expensive and whereas cheap and beautiful often suggests a void, FKG is packed with all sorts of good ideas for creating your own little kitchen garden. From Ms. Brennan's perspective, the French kitchen garden is a soup garden or potager where one grows vegetables, herbs, strawberries, melons and "cutting flowers, such as zinnias and nasturtiums." She also suggests that although the proper garden would not include trees which shade vegetable plants and flowers and reduce production, occasionally, one includes a fig tree or some other small fruit tree. Generally, the produce grown in the potager is consumed as the season progresses (soup to soup so to speak) with nothing leftover for canning or preserving although some items such as winter squash and potatoes might be stored in a cool dry place for a short while.

The concept of a year-round garden is European, and therefore a foreign idea for most Americans whose only spring crop consists of daffodils. So among other contributions, Brennan encourages the reader/gardener and/or novice potager to think differently about the use of space heretofore only used to grow a few tomato plants and pole beans. I have been a 3 season flower gardener most of my life (spring-summer-fall) but in recent years have attempted to have a good-looking winter garden. My winter "crop" has been more structural than not, consisting of dried grasses, dried sedum and other "interesting" plant forms that are decaying and bird friendly. Ms Brennan has inspired me to rethink my approach and seek out more information about four-season vegetable gardening. Winter for example is a great time to plant onion sets and grow leafy items in a cold frame. If you're thinking about growing the old-style Victory Garden, or want to know more about the soup garden, Brennan's book is a good place to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Great Illustrtations & Explanations.......2002-01-13

My wonderful husband just bought this for me for my birthday and my thumbs are glowing green. (Oh, to be an Alaskan and have a gardening book bestowed up on me in the dead of winter!) The author explains many ideas for gardening in great detail, often explaining what could happen if you do things different ways (for instance, what happens when radishes are grown in hot soil in warm climates vs. in cooler ones.) The illustrations are also efficient in that they are in water colour and show detail where needed and show adequate lay-out.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful read, and some sound advice.......1999-04-24

If you are lucky enough to ever meet Gerogeanne Brennan, you know that she is the real thing: down to earth, a gourmand who gardens. You can trust that Brennan speaks from her experience, not from the experience of her "experts."

In this book Brennan does something unusal that you do not usually find in gardening books, especially ones that are geared for begining gardeners. There are no lists of 10 fool proof plants, nor strict instructions to plant something a specific way on an absolute date or face certain failure. (Honestly, why Martha thinks you have to plant peas on St. Patrick's Day is beyond me.) Brennan instead wants you to understand the philosophy of the potager, and then make your own rules.

Brennan suggests what you might want to plant in each of the four seasons (wherever you happen to live) and tells you what typically would be planted in a true French potager at the same season; Brennan gives you sources to find these plants; Brennan even gives you an idea of what size pot you would need if you are restricted to balconey gardening. Very thoughtful. Though I have not tried any of the recipes in this book, they are similar to others you can find in her well-received cook books.

The book itself is small and well made; the paper is heavy. It feels good in your hand. The illustrations are charming without being too cute, and often they illustrate a garden layout that actually makes sense. And of course Brennan's writing is rich and clear.

This is a good book for a beginning gardener. You will not be dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite Recreated.......2007-10-05

One of my personal favorite stories from childhood, I bought this book to use to read to younger children. The illustrations are not the same as they were when I was a child, but they are still fantastic and vivid. The children love this story as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Great, timeless book!.......2006-01-03

I'm probably not the norm here in comparison to the other reviewers, but this is really a cute book. After reading the other reviews, I'll probably get the other version as well. However, that said, my mother purchased this book for me when I was six-years-old and I STILL have it. It is read almost nightly in our house to a toddler who thoroughly enjoys it. He particularly likes to point out what's wrong. For example, the little old lady tells the young man that she has nothing in her garden to feed him, nor anything in her house. My little one always says, "she's lying." And, he also picked up the fact that the young man in the story never says please or even thank you after this lady fixes him this wonderful soup. That's really something too and I even have to add it in while I'm reading it.

This is a cute book but I do suggest getting the other French classic version as well. This young man is somewhat of a shiftless fellow, not working, but just conning meals off of folks. Not too sure of the message there and it is repetitious which is good for young children. I do recommend it, however, since it is quite a cute story. Obviously, the illustrations in my 36-year-old book are quite different than this version so I will refrain from commenting on them.

1 out of 5 stars No salt, no pepper, no flavor.......2004-09-17

In this version of stone soup they forgot the salt. It is about a boy who visits an old woman and somehow cons her into feeding him. The original stone soup teaches teamwork and neighborly love.

2 out of 5 stars Sour taste.......2003-08-22

This version of Stone Soup leaves a sour taste in my mouth. At the beginning I was especially disappointed that there were no polite words like please and thank you. The boy also tells instead of asking. The other thing I don't like is that the old woman basically lies about not having anything to eat. Both of these issues are bad examples for my child.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2002-11-04

This could of been the greastest book since Mr. Bump. Its a classic that is a must read for all. Currently I am 17 years old and have read this about 42 times. I must say its still invigorating, to the point that I will explode...

What a treasure! The Soups of France feels luxurious, with its heavy-stock paper and stunning color photographs of the French countryside, and is peppered throughout with thoughtful literary quotes about food and sweet M.F.K. Fisher-style commentary by the author, Lois Anne Rothert. Rothert spent 10 years collecting these recipes, translating them from French, and clarifying the older ones that used measurements like "handfuls." She shares their origins in a way that will transport you to the villages, hamlets, and farms where she found them. Some of the recipes are familiar, such as Soupe au Pistou and pot-au-feu, but most are more unusual. From the southwest, Rothert presents a rich, comforting Chestnut and Pumpkin Soup, and from the Rhone-Alps, an Alpine Cheese-Glazed Root Vegetable Soup that's hearty and filling, with an intoxicating aroma.

Surprisingly, many of the soups are quite easy to prepare, such as a puréed Wild Mushroom and Hazelnut Soup from the Franche-Comté (the resulting texture is almost velvety), and a Garlic, Sausage, and Red Pepper Soup from the Basque country that's ready in about half an hour. There are recipes for the more adventurous too, including Frogs' Legs in Watercress Cream and Stinging Nettle and Potato Soup. But what's most wonderful about this book is the pleasure you'll get from it even when you're not cooking. Francophiles will love reading about Rothert's experiences, and foodies will love her generous descriptions of the traditions, history, and techniques she learned about while researching The Soups of France. --Leora Y. Bloom

    Book Description

In France, a nation of small villages, an incredible variety of soups have evolved over time, with cherished family recipes handed down from generation to generation. The Soups of France uncovers those recipes, many still enjoyed today, others long forgotten. From famed Pot-au-Feu and Bouillabaisse to Baratxuri Salda, a spicy Basque broth of garlic, sausage, and red pepper, and the Dordogne’s Sobronade, ham and bean soup, each of the 90-plus recipes celebrates a melting pot of flavor. Rich with glorious photographs illustrating the lush countryside, quaint villages, and vibrant marketplaces, The Soups of France is a delightful culinary ramble. A labor of love on an art the French take for granted, this is a treasure no true collection of cookery books should be without.

5 out of 5 stars Touring France in a Soup Bowl.......2006-02-10

The French didn't invent soup (though the word "restaurant" refers to soup and is a French word.) But they sure embrace soup as an important food. Personally, I love soup and think it is indeed a restorative; easy to digest, good on cold days and soothing to sip slowly. A well-made soup may be humble, like bean soup, or insanely complex and elegant like a crab or lobster bisque.

The Soups of France is more or less organized by French "Department" or area of the country. The accompanying photographs are excellent quality and show the beautiful and varied French countryside.

There are 84 different soups, from cabbage, bean, the inevitable Potage Crecy (cream of carrot) to game soup and rabbit soup. The only soup missing is the ubiquitous no-name soup that is to be found in every cafe or inn no matter where you are in France--it's a puree of (leftover?) vegetables in a veal broth base with cream and you usually find it on the menu as the soupe du jour. It's delicious and I hope someday someone will provide a recipe for it (maybe with the stock used) as it's a fine homey thing and one you can make when the family forgets to finish all the rutabagas and parsnips.

The book is in a large, square format and is a must for any Francophile or cooking afficionado. Interesting reading, pretty with nice recipes. A great gift for the foody in your family.

5 out of 5 stars Feast your eyes AND tummy!.......2003-01-28

With all the scenery and none of the rude people, this book is better (and certainly much more affordable) than a trip to France. For those of us who remember--and sorely miss--the Rotherts' restaurant, "DuJour" in Fort Wayne, the recipes are a godsend. Let's hope Lois sells many many many copies and uses the royalties to publish a companion cookbook ... of Larsh's bread recipes!

    5 out of 5 stars A big 5.......2002-10-25

I urge you to buy this book or at least look at it. It is a beautiful book. Charming in style with beautiful images. But the best part is that it is not just a rehash of old recipes, or recipes congured up to be different. When you eat one of these soups, there is a depth to the flavor, and you could think you were in France. I commend the author for preserving these old soups.

"STONE SOUP" TAKES A TRIP SOUTH OF THE BORDER

When a group of hungry soldiers rides into San Miguel, the townspeople don't want to share their food. They hide their tortillas, tamales, beans, and flour and put on torn clothes to look poor. But the Capitan is not fooled …he asks for a cactus thorn to make some cactus soup, and before long he has tricked the townspeople into giving him salt and chilies, vegetables, and a chicken as well! Whimsical watercolors add to the humor in this Southwestern twist on the classic Stone Soup.

Cactus Soup tells the story of a town that doesn't want to share its food with a small approaching army. But in the end, the captain gets the whole town to "make" his famous cactus soup. I like the quote, "Why ask for what you don't have?" You'll feel like eating Mexican after reading this book! I especially like the "stretched" illustrated characters. Muy bien!
