Book Description

A fusion of simplicity, healthy ingredients and just-right quantities, these delicious, exciting new recipes are designed for today's growing world of empty-nesters, couples without children and smaller households.

For millions of fast-paced, modern households, the old cookbook standard of "serves four" is increasingly outdated and a daily nuisance. With more than 77 million baby boomers adjusting to the Empty Nest Syndrome, and with their adult children setting up their own new homes, there is a mounting demand for quick, easy, healthy recipes yielding fewer servings.

But cooking for two people or even singles isn't as simple as cutting a recipe in half. In EatingWell Serves Two, the award-winning editors and recipe developers for America's leading food and nutrition magazine have created 150 dinner recipes from their hugely popular "Healthy in a Hurry" and "Serves Two" columns to meet the specific needs of smaller households.

More than a cookbook, EatingWell Serves Two provides a smart guide for how to shop in small quantities, how to store leftover ingredients, keep a well-stocked pantry and use easy cooking strategies that result in minimal waste while putting a healthy, delicious meal on the table in 45 minutes or less.

Filled with mouthwatering photography and tips on shopping, planning and simple cooking for two with healthy ingredients and without waste. Full-color throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious, easy, healthy.......2007-09-26

The book is large and sturdy and stands up well to typical kitchen abuse. It includes information on shopping healthily for two, as well as menu suggestions. Recipe chapters include: dinner salads, soups & stews, vegetarian mains, poultry, fish & seafood, meat, and accompaniments. In keeping with the healthy aim of the book, desserts are relegated to a several-page portion of the accompaniments chapter.

Small symbols mark particularly low-carb or high-fiber recipes. Each recipe estimates both "active minutes" spent preparing the dish as well as total minutes. There are make-ahead notes and detailed nutrition information. There's also a "nutrition bonus" note that points out any particular vitamin benefits found in that recipe. For example, the "Caesar Salad Three Ways" includes plenty of Selenium, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and omega-3s (it also comes with a basic recipe as well as a shrimp and a chicken variation--hence "three ways"). Sometimes extra notes are included, for example, the Caesar Salad has a side note with instructions on making your own croutons. It also includes a delectable-looking photo; while photos aren't included with all of the recipes, there are certainly enough to make your mouth water!

I personally found not all of the flavors to my liking. Some were a bit bland, and some tried to make up for blandness in ways that just didn't appeal to my palate. A Lentil & Chicken Stew appealed to a friend of mine who particularly prefers bland food, but I just couldn't enjoy the lemon, dill, and chicken flavors together. On the other hand, she and I both loved the Creamy Artichoke & Spinach Soup, which takes a rather unusual approach to making a thick and creamy soup out of very healthy ingredients.

There's a really nice Grilled Peach Sundae recipe in the quick desserts section that we heartily enjoyed. While it's true that I found a few of their recipes to be not entirely memorable, on the whole they're quite good. The Eggplant-Cheddar Bake, for example, disappeared very quickly!

My only reservations with this book are definitely taste-dependent. If you don't enjoy the kind of semi-bland, lemony-chicken type of recipe that shows up in a lot of healthy eating cookbooks, then there will be some recipe sections in here that won't appeal to you. That said, there are plenty of people who will enjoy those recipes, and even the rest of us will find lots to work with in here!

5 out of 5 stars Versatile and delicious as well as healthy and quick.......2007-08-04

EatingWell Magazine aims these healthy and varied recipes at the empty nester who doesn't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen or end up with leftovers. Preparation time (active and total) and nutrition info accompany all recipes as well as make-ahead instructions where applicable.

However, convenience and diet aside - these are versatile and delicious recipes. There's a whole chapter on dinner salads - Cobb Salad, Southeast Asian Scallops and Greens, Sweet and Salty Beef Salad, Orzo Salad with Chickpeas and Artichoke Hearts. Every one I tried was a winner and all came in at under 30 minutes.

Other must-have-again dishes include Lemony Asparagus Pasta, Creamy Artichoke and Spinach Soup, Marmalade chicken, Shrimp and Shiitake Stir-fry, Grilled Steak with Beets and Radicchio.

A few I plan never to try, like Turkey Fingers with Maple-Mustard Sauce and Asian Salisbury Steaks, but these are outnumbered by intriguing dishes like Pork Tenderloin with Gingered Mango Sauce and Pomegranate Duck. The book ends with chapters for "Quick" sauces, sides and desserts as well as a vegetable shopping and cooking guide and notes on cooking techniques and special ingredients.

Highly recommended for anyone with a small household.

5 out of 5 stars this is a fabulous cookbook!.......2007-07-23

I have dozens of cookbooks and it takes something special for me to keep one on my kitchen counter. This one certainly qualifies. I've tried several of the recipes and all were delicious and it is so nice not to have a ton of leftovers. I love that the nutritional information and suggested sides and included for each recipe.

What really makes this book a winner for me are the Notes. Every time I read an instruction or ingredient I'm not quite sure about, there is a Note exactly on point, anticipating my question. In addition, the tips regarding shopping in small quantities are very valuable.

If you're looking for a cookbook with delicious recipes and smaller quantities, don't pass this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Current Favorite Cookbook!!.......2007-06-26

I have been an Eating Well magazine subscriber for years, so I'm already a fan of their recipes. I find myself using this cookbook at least 4 or 5 times a week. The recipes are great tasting, easy to assemble, and often require even less time than the estimate given. The portion control of making just 2 servings is an excellent way to maintain recent weight loss for both my husband and myself. (No second helpings - but definitely enough to satisfy hunger!) I've also given the book as a wedding gift - it has beautiful illustrations as well as a wealth of shopping and ingredient tips. When healthy is this good and easy, why eat any other way?!

Book Description

Under pressure to get a tasty, nutritious dinner on the table in a flash? Like the idea of preparing fork-tender beef stew in thirty minutes and pot roast in under an hour? All this and more is made possible by the pressure cooker, a magical appliance that produces soul-satisfying, homemade food in one-third (or less) the standard cooking time.

In Pressure Perfect, Lorna Sass, the country's leading authority on pressure cooking, distills her two decades of experience into one comprehensive volume. First learn everything you need to know about buying and using today's 100% safe cookers. Then enjoy more than 200 recipes for preparing soups, meats, poultry, grains, beans, vegetables, and desserts in record time. How about whipping up a savory risotto in 4 minutes, chicken cacciatore in 12 minutes, or a delectable chocolate cheesecake in 25 minutes?

Because the pressure cooker tenderizes tough cuts of meat quickly, you can prepare fall-off-the-bone beef short ribs or lamb shanks on weekday nights instead of waiting for a special occasion. The pressure cooker also allows you to make delectable one-pot meals in minutes. Among the many innovative recipes and techniques, you'll learn to cook meatloaf and potatoes simultaneously in 10 minutes, and meatballs, pasta, and sauce at the same time in only 5 minutes. Many recipes also suggest Cook-Along ideas for preparing vegetables and grains along with the entrée.

To further help those cooking under pressure (and who isn't nowadays?), each chapter contains timing charts for quick reference. Tips and Pressure Points in every recipe ensure optimum results.

This ultimate guide to pressure cooking is a must for all busy cooks, boaters, brides, college students, and anyone looking for a great way to make irresistible, healthy, home-made food fast.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect, indeed.......2007-08-09

After all the experience that this pressure cooker prima donna has had a chance to glean over the years I was hoping for plenty of expert advice, not just recipes for another stew, and great advice is just what she delivers! There are tips enough in here to make up an entire cooking methodology for this wonderful time-saving device. Then she adds to this her "transformations", which alter a recipe, with easy changes, into an entirely different potastew. On top of that (no pun intended), she gives us recipes for two-tiered dinners that offer potatoes and meatloaf in the same pot, among others. Hats off to you, Lorna! I highly recommend!!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty recipes & useful info.......2007-08-01

I'm new to pressure cooking, and I love excellent food. So far I've found this book useful for a novice pressure cooker user. The recipes are tasty and easy to follow. The book inspires me to use the pressure cooker more often.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference manual.......2007-07-30

I am not necessarily interested in all the recipes in the book (why would I want to make desserts in the pressure cooker?) but this book has excellent information on the differences between conventional cooking and pressure cookery. I consult this book whenever I need to adapt one of my recipes for the pressure cooker.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-07-28

I recently bought an electric pressure cooker off of QVC and needed some recipes. I would use my old regular pressure cooker once in awhile, but only to do meats in and nothing fancy. This cookbook explains alot! It really walks you through everything and has variations on the same recipe. I have not made anything yet, but will make something tomorrow. I know it will be easy because you are walked through it all. Now I just wish I had bought 6 qt instead of a 5 qt! I hope the author comes out with another recipe book as I am looking forward to more recipes/

Book Description

Whether it was a whirlwind romance or you've known each other for years, you are entering a new stage of life. Now that you're married, it's time to think about the new life and traditions you'd like to create. Often our fondest family memories are centered around the dinner table, with the fulfilling meals and companionship it offers.

To create this cookbook, Gayle Pirie and John Clark have drawn from their experience as restaurant chefs and on their shared history as a married couple. They have cooked in some of San Francisco's best restaurants for nearly twenty years, so they know how to make food taste delicious. But they also know what it's like to come home from a long day of work and want to create a comfortable haven for their family. In these pages, Gayle and John have brought together dozens of their own favorite dishes that can create hundreds of family meals.

Knowing that most of their readers won't have learned the art of cooking at their grandmother's knee, they've also included the basics. The Bride & Groom Cookbook explains all you need to know about setting up a kitchen and pantry with essential equipment and ingredients, combining dishes to create a meal, and even cooking methods. If you're already comfortable in the kitchen, you'll find plenty of valuable advice on pairing wine and food, serving a cheese course, and gracious entertaining.

The two of you could take only one cookbook with you as you embark together into this new and rewarding stage of life, the Bride & Groom Cookbook would truly be the one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Many Wedding Occassions.......2007-04-10

I ordered two copies of this book for different wedding occassions. The first was as a wedding gift. It was loved when received. The second occassion was for a his and her shower. As the bride and groom cookbook published by Williams-Sonoma, the recipes are all fantastic and are great for various occassions from casual dinner to a romantic evening, to meals to celebrate special occassions. As well as all types of meals, the recipes are also of varied cooking levels for beginner to expert, which allows new couples to begin cooking and develop their cooking skills as their relationships grow. HUGE RECOMMENDATION for any wedding occassion!

5 out of 5 stars BEST of the Bride & Groom Cookbooks.......2006-12-30

I have gone through the Betty Crocker Bride & Groom Cookbook, the Better Homes and Garden Bride & Groom Cookbook and many more trying to find one that would have great pointers for cooking for two as well as great dishes. This cookbook has it all. The recipes are great classic dishes and the recipes range from breakfast foods to desserts. I highly recommend this cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars A great wedding gift ! .......2006-08-30

the happy couple about to be married enjoy good food. the groom to be is the chef; the bride has a demanding career and has no time to cook, but wants to learn some basics just the same. This book is great for people like them...really begins at the beginning and has some very good recipes. I copied a few of them to keep for myself.

4 out of 5 stars Great as a Present or Starter Cookbook.......2006-07-18

First off, this book looks great. I have a collection of hand-me-down 'classics' (Beard, Joy, all that jazz) but none of them are very presentable. After getting married recently, we decided to get a new book and this one really stood out. I personally think the title (cooking together) is a little misleading, because there's not much really that would differentiate it from any other starter cookbook in that regard. It is more family oriented in meal choices, and gives some great pointers to get you moving around the kitchen. There is also excellent advice on meals, pairings etc. Overall its a very good resource, especially for a younger couple. And of course, thanks to the slipcover, it makes a great wedding or anniversary present!

5 out of 5 stars Over a hundred classic dishes for meals from breakfast to dinner .......2006-05-23

If you're seeking a shower or wedding gift for a couple who likes to cook or eat, BRIDE & GROOM COOKBOOK: RECIPES FOR COOKING TOGETHER is the item of choice for such a couple. The authors use their own experience as restaurant chefs and as a married couple to show how working families can use dozens of favorite dishes to create hundreds of family meals. Even though the authors are cooks, they don't presume any prior knowledge: the basics accompany over a hundred classic dishes for meals from breakfast to dinner and plenty of supportive tips from preparation and cooking times to a complexity scale between 1-4.

5 out of 5 stars London Food Icon on the River.......2007-02-23

Having been to the restaurant twice in my adult life I can not only recommend the London River Cafe as a destination place but now I can actually produce some sensational, yet quite easy, recipes in the here and now. Sometimes our palette can only be satisfied with the real thing but the new book, "Italian Two Easy", is as close as you can get. I highly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars More Great, Simple Recipes. Buy It!!!.......2006-06-15

`Italian Two Easy, Simple Recipes from the London River Café' by proprietor / chefs, Rose Gray and Ruth Rodgers is the sixth cookbook by these ladies, and I welcome it with almost as much anticipation as I did the next installment of `The Lord of the Rings' or at least the DVD release of same.

As the title suggests, this volume is the second of a pair of volumes of `Easy Italian' recipes, the first published about two years ago, copyrighted in 2004. This volume actually improves on the earlier volume in that I found the layout of the first volume very annoying, to the point where it detracted from the value of the book, in spite of the fact that the recipes were almost uniformly excellent.

Gray and Rogers reaffirm two major themes with this volume. First, they celebrate the genius of the Italian pantry with its rich collection of wines, olive oils, cheeses, salt cured fish, capers, breads, pasta, sausages, and cured meats. All of these products are centuries old, enhanced just a bit by the modern methods for canning beans and tomatoes. These commercial, yet artisinally prepared products are such great ingredients that one can assemble fabulous dishes with very little effort. And, that is what Mmes. Gray and Rodgers' recipes are all about.

The second main behind their books is that their recipes follow a very typically English approach to recipe writing. As I wrote to Ms. Diane Jacob, author of `Will Write for Food', there seems to me to be three types of recipe writing. First is the Julia Child model of `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' which covers every detail of cooking technique in exquisite detail. The second is the Joel Robuchon style found in the `Simply French' collaboration with Patricia Wells, where the point of a recipe is often to demonstrate some salient aspect of an important ingredient technique. The third is the Elizabeth David style which is light on asides or voluminous comments on technique or ingredients. This is the style that has become so successful for most recent and contemporary English writers such as Jane Grigson, Nigel Slater, Nigella Lawson, Tamasin Day-Lewis, Gray and Rogers, and their protégé, Jamie Oliver. Now this is not the style of recipe writing you want to deal with when you are just starting out, unless it happens to be in Slater's and Day-Lewis recent large cookery manuals, `Appetite' and `Tamasin's Kitchen Bible' respectively. This is also not the style of cookbook you want if you wish to dig deep into the heart of Italian cuisine, as Gray and Rodgers do not (at least in this book) go into the techniques of either bread, pasta, or sausage making. For these techniques and important insights into the backbone of classical Italian cooking, I refer you to the grand dame of Italian cooking writing in English, Marcella Hazan and her `Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking' and her most recent `Marcella Says'.

As I have said of Jamie Oliver's books, Gray and Rogers' books are primarily celebrations of the simplicity of the Italian cuisine, although Oliver's exuberance comes through just a bit better than from our ladies. One thing you will not get from Gray and Rogers is a reflection of the typical Mario Batali statement that the Italian cuisine is the cuisine of poverty. While hams and cheeses and sausages may have been a necessity 200 years ago, in England and the United States, these Italian specialties are pretty dear. Prosciutto di Parma and Parmesano-Reggiano both run to $16 or more dollars a pound or more.

So, if you know your way around the kitchen and can afford `the good stuff', genuine imported Italian ingredients, then I heartily recommend this and all of the other five Gray / Rogers volumes, especially if you are fond of entertaining or like to cook every day, but don't want to spend three hours in the kitchen every day. These books demonstrate why it is so easy for Rachael Ray, for example, to put together fast meals based on the Italian pantry, but these recipes are, unlike Ms. Ray's fare, tested in restaurant experience.

Some of the recipes do require some Italian ingredients that are still not that easy to come by. One, for example, is bottarga, the sun-dried roe of the gray mullet. I have never searched for it, but I have also never seen it in my local megamart, although I suspect the big New York City food emporia such as Zabar's are sure to carry it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the appendix of suppliers in the back of the book were all American sources and not UK sources.

If I were to pick one especially strong point of the Gray / Rogers volumes, it would be their vegetable recipes. I have read and reviewed a number of excellent books on vegetable recipes, most especially Jack Bishop's several books, and I still find unique recipes among the River Café cuisine, especially in dishes which combine two or more vegetables and therefore don't easily fit into a book organized by vegetable. My only caveat is that since this book is all about the recipes and nothing but the recipes, it sometimes lets some bad advice slip by as when it suggests you discard the stems from a head of broccoli. I happen to love broccoli right down to its tougher stems, which one can always peel, so I suggest you be a bit more frugal here.

The second best aspect of the River Café books is their wealth of simple pasta recipes.

The bottom line is that these River Café cookbooks are easily one of the best sources of quick Italian influenced books I have seen anywhere, without the annoying and cloying Rayspeak chatter from Ms. Rachael. One could do worse than to fill your entire kitchen library with Gray and Rogers cookbooks, with Marcella Hazan's works in the library to fill in the background.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a good cookbook for two.......2007-03-18

I read the other reveiws and people, it's just a cookbook. It has beef, pork, chicken, it has vegetables, soups, salads, desserts. Just like every other cookbook, but these portions are smaller and I am so thankful for that. I bought one for my house (now that we are empty nesters) and I gave one to my married to be nephew and future wife. I love the fact that I have no more leftovers and my nephew and his fiance love the new food to try other than the fast food and take out they are used to eating.

This cookbook calls for "real" food that you have on hand or that is easy to purchase without breaking the bank and does not require a lot of "special" food or cooking processes. I love that because in this busy day and time, I don't have a lot of time to shop for "different" food.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we have.

5 out of 5 stars saves room in your fridge!.......2006-08-16

My husband and I received this book for our wedding, and 4 years later we still love it. All our other books yielded 4 servings in most recipes, and we would end up with piles of tupperware containers in the fridge holding leftovers that inevitably went bad. We have tried all of the entree recipes in the book and love them. There are also a lot of recipes for soups, salads, and even some sandwiches food that is easily portable. My husband is the cook in our house- I rarely cook, and am very much a beginner, but all of these recipes were simple enough for me. Yes, there is a lot of chicken, but I don't know too many people who don't like chicken! And yes, there are a lot of vegetables too- but you're gonna be looking a long time for a recipe book without chicken or vegetables. If we didn't want to eat chicken or vegetables, we'd go to McDonalds.

3 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Cooking for Two.......2005-09-24

Possibly a good book for someone interested in lots of vegetables.

1 out of 5 stars Chicken Lovers Dream.......2005-05-22

This cookbook is only useful if you live on an above average income and love chicken. Eighty percent of the dinner recipes are chicken, most of the rest are salads or some variation of noodles. The portions are all divided into two person sizes, however there is nothing to help you buy only what you need to prepare a meal for two without left over rations. In short, this cookbook is completely useless for anyone closely resembling a newly-wed couple on a tight budget who happen to not love chicken. Now I'm off to find a cookbook I can hopefully actually use. Very disappointing...

4 out of 5 stars A great gift for Newlyweds.......2004-01-07

This was my husband's choice when we went shopping for cookbooks together. I grew up in a big, hungry family with no idea how to keep cooking for two people interesting. I don't have to worry about leftovers or the results of reducing a recipe's servings. Now I can watch our calories by making small portions of guilt-causing foods such as biscuits or Eggs Benedict. The Honey Lime Fruit Salad is so easy and tasty that I have doubled and quadrupled the recipe for groups.

This may not have the best recipes Betty Crocker has to offer, but it has the best collection of usable recipes for couples that I have seen. This is an excellent book to give to someone of any average cooking level who feeds a small crowd. I would give this to a young person moving out on their own and any Newlywed couple.

Book Description

Tea for two. That's what it's all about, right? So how come every recipe you pick up says "serves 4 to 6"? Or more! What do you do when you want macaroni and cheese, but don't want to be reheating it for three nights? Or a couple of cookies, but don't want to be tempted by two dozen sitting on the counter all week?

Creative cookbook authors and cooks Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough have all the answers in Cooking for Two.

Brimming with 120 smaller-serving, big-taste recipes,Cooking for Two offers cooks familiar favorites such as PastaBolognese, Chicken Pot Pie, and Mushroom Barley Soup, as well as new dishes for today's tastes like Pork Satay Salad and Snapper Fillets Sautéed with Orange and Pecans.

Simply cutting down larger recipes leads to wasted ingredients. But Bruce and Mark have developed each recipe so you buy only what you need, and use all of what you buy. Instead of opening a can of vegetable stock only to use three tablespoons, use the liquid the dried mushrooms have soaked in. If an onion is too large for a recipe, chop a shallot instead.

The dessert chapters are filled with cookies, puddings, and cakes, all designed for two servings. Small-batch baking requires strict attention to detail. A regular egg can be too big for a small batch of six cookies, so they suggest quail eggs or the easy-to-find pasteurized egg substitutes, which you can measure out in tablespoons.

Truly a cookbook for everyday use, each recipe is labeled as quick (ready in minutes with minimal cooking), moderate (requires a bit more preparation or cooking), or leisurely (perfect for quiet celebrations or weekend meals) to help you decide which dish best fits into your day.

With ingredient and equipment guides, as well as tips on how to stock your pantry to avoid those there's-nothing-in-the-house-so-let's-go-out moments, Cooking for Two will surely become the cookbook you reach for every night of the week.

It's just two perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Not for your every day dinner.......2007-03-18

Although this book had some good recipes in it, it is not for your every day rush or in a hurry dinners, or for people who like to eat simple like us. But it does have some nice recipes in it and I have used it a time or two. But if you are a country bumpkin like me or simple folk, please save your money because this is not the cookbook for you.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but just didn't cut it for me........2007-01-24

This is an interesting book, full of appetizing recipes, using regular, fresh and healthy ingredients. Although the author seems to trully understand the need to use ingredients responsibly, many recipes ask for things such as a single rib of celery, or a 1/4 cup of cream. Unless we have a plan for the remainder, we can find ourselves with lots of spoiled food, which is the evil of cooking for only one or two. Also, most recipes have 10-plus ingredients, which means that many times we can't just open the book, pick a recipe and cook. I think that the real turn off for me was the fact that there are no pictures. I love reading cookbooks and pictures really have a way of stimulating my imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Most Handy Cookbook I Own.......2006-11-10

This cookbook is fantastic. Most recipies make enouch for dinner and lunch for my husband and I. They are super tasty. Symbols to inform you of the preparation are super handy. The cooking times on some recipies are odd, so be careful.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to my cookbook library!.......2006-08-23

I bought this book for me and my boyfriend to use... and we do so religously. We make a recipe from this book about once per week and are always delighted with the results. The recipes are easy to follow and if ingredients are difficult to find in your local grocery, substitute ingredient suggestions are made. We now have a few favorites we have added to our repertoire!

I also purchased a copy for my brother and his fiancee as a gift.

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2006-08-15

The recipes are poor and the inability to substitute is worse. Plus some of the ingredients are hard to come by. Better off with another cookbook, or just taking your favorite stand by cookbooks and learning to modify the recipes yourself. This book is downright bad.

4 out of 5 stars Usually great, sometimes needs some help.......2007-03-19

I bought this book as a gift for a girlfriend getting married because I loved my copy so much! This is a great book for any newlywed - new to the kitchen or seasoned cooks. Lots of great ideas & recipes in here for everyday and for special occasions. I have found some of the recipes when followed exactly to be "missing something" in taste. My husband and I have experimented and made some the recipes "our own" for this reason. Overall a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Bridal Shower Gift!.......2006-01-30

This book is great for newlyweds. It has sections for holiday meals, and romantic cooking for 2 meals. Most meals are made to serve 2 people. There are sections about entertaining, hosting a Thanksgiving meal, etc. Great for a couple who are new to living together and are learning how to cook for two. Full color pages. I gave this book as a bridal shower gift to my friend, along with Betty Crocker's Cookbook - Bridal Edition.

4 out of 5 stars For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . .......2005-05-18

I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.

It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.

If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.

4 out of 5 stars Where's The simplicity for "New"lyweds?.......2004-02-06

Although this book has some great ideas, I don't find it very helpful for newlyweds just beginning on the journey to a new life, whom may need some simple recipes for starting out. These can be complicated at times. The name and a few recipes referring to candlelight meals you may wish to take time to do is about the only thing that puts this book into the gift category if anyone is looking for that special cookbook to give to Newlyweds. I also recommend "Honeymooner's Cookbook" and it's a more practical approach for newlyweds because the recipes are quite simple yet some very elegant to serve by candlelight. Also it has special features such as a cute recipe pocket & tabbed dividers that are simply pretty, tons of tips too on the back of each one to make things a little easier around the kitchen and whole house. With a nice custom designed cover, even a Wedding bouquet on the back cover, I would suggest it along with this cookbook or by itself.

2 out of 5 stars I was expecting more tips and tricks.......2003-07-26

From the blurb on Amazon, I was expecting more tips, tricks and handholding from this book. Basically it's just recipes with a glossary in the back of cooking terms and herbs and spices.

There are some entertaining tips but I would go to [online store] for a book like that. Not exactly what I expected when this book arrived. Also, I'd like to have nutritional information because we like to plan our meals to be moderately healthy.

4 out of 5 stars Very happy with my purchase.......2007-07-07

For the Chicken Basil-Blue Pasta alone, you should buy this book. It's one of my favorite things I've ever eaten. Yum-O!

As with most cookbooks, there are some recipes I like and some I don't. Overall, it's definitely worth it. Don't try just one recipe and then never use it again. Try to pick recipes that include ingredients you know you like, and try those first.

3 out of 5 stars returned.......2007-04-13

i returned it because the recipes weren't very original or enticing, it was written in this odd, cutesy tone and for those who care, there weren't very many pictures. it was overall a let down. as far as cooking for 2, i recommend EatingWell serves two.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for small families.......2006-09-26

I have been inspired by this book to perform an activity that has intimidated me for years - cook. Even the cullinarily challenged can make these meals! The format is also well done, listing the equipment needed for each recipe, and it includes mix and match charts for everyday favorites. Most of all, I love that the meals are relatively quick and incorporate fresh ingredients. The lack of leftovers is fantastic for us, since we just can't get excited about eating them. Of the 3 "Cooking for Two" books I purchased, this one is by far the best

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and wonderful bood.......2005-01-25

I can not say enough wonderful things about this book. The recipes are easy, quick and most of all execellent. I have hidden this book from my husband who likes to cook and often thinks he is a better cook than me. With this book as my "secret weapon" I have been able to impress the pants off of him. I have not found a bad recipe yet. The portions are smaller than most recipes, and the tips throughout the book are witty and fun and a perfect compliment to this book. I would highly recommend this to everyone- and am buying it for my mother-in-law as my husband has even raved to her about these recipes!! That alone is good enough for me to know the book is wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars A standard resource in my kitchen.......2005-01-13

I really do enjoy this little cookbook. While not as comprehensive or big as several others I own, I appreciate the fact that many (not all) of the recipes are sized for a small number of portions. Many recipes can be halved rather easily. I love the chocolate chip cookies (which are the standard Nestle tollhouse recipe with a few key changes) and the garlic mushroom marinara sauce, especially with the optional olives added to it. Overall I think this is a good cookbook. I have yet to make anything in it I didn't like.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book & Great Recipes~WORTH EVERY PENNY!.......2003-09-22

This cookbook is great & I simply adore it! The cover is beautiful, even the back is pretty! I display it on my kitchen counter and I USE IT ALOT!
Everyone who sees it and looks at the easy recipes wants one too. I'm so pleased to have such easy recipes at my fingertips. Finally a cookbook that's not so fancy that it takes all day to cook up something delicious! Some of my favorites to fix have been the ~ Caesar Salad ~which is so fresh yet not hard at all to make. My husband and I really like the homemade ~Potatoes Au Gratin~, he claims they're a lot like his mother used to make & (so much better than the store bought boxed kind). I made the ~Honeymoon Coconut Pie~ and we loved it! I use it all the time and thus far the recipes have come out delicious.
You can really tell looking through this book that a lot of hard work went into making this a special cookbook for anyone to own and want to use everday.
Not only are the recipes super easy but they're really GOOD! Another thing the helpful hints and cooking tips is so handy, there's a bunch of them listed in this book, and I've found them very useful. The ~Recipe Pocket~ is so~~ cute. JUST CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT IT, I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.

4 out of 5 stars Great Gift!.......2002-08-20

I have been cooking for many years and looking through this book is like looking at recipes it took me years to collect. I even discovered some that I didn't have, so was thrilled. The perfect gift for the new bride or even for someone like me to have all these fast and easy recipes in one book. I eat low carb these days but found many recipes in here that I can easily adapt. Of course I will be making many of these just as they are for my non low carbing family. Thanks for a great book. Diana Lee

5 out of 5 stars Novice cook.......2002-07-22

I'm new to cooking and this cookbook makes it easier for me. There are fewer ingredients per recipe than some cookbooks making the shopping list more manageable too. I tried one of the recipes for salad dressing it was as good as store bought I would say better. Then I tried a topping recipe for fruit. In it there was part honey and some lime juice, also a pinch of salt. I tried this over some strawberries, and it really satisfied my sweet tooth. So far I have only tried out 2 recipes and they were 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD HOME COOKIN!!!!.......2002-07-22

I loved the recipes in this cookbook. They are easy to make, but taste like you put a lot of time and effort in them. I think Libby did an excellent job and I can't wait for her next cookbook .

5 out of 5 stars HoneyMooner's Cookbook.......2002-05-29

I love the easy-to-follow recipes and always receive nice compliments on the good-tasting dishes. I often refer to this book when selecting a recipe to prepare for a group as the dishes usually appeal to a variety of tastes.
