Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-05-22
I think any one concerned about their health should take a look at this book. The recipes are great too.
A hidden gem.......2006-04-10
I edit cookbooks for a living, and this is one of my favorites from which to cook. If a strict fat-free diet isn't necessary for you, modify as I do by saut?eing veggies in a little olive oil, and feel free to improvise with substitutes. But this book is solid and full of creative, colorful food and wonderful flavor combinations.
LOWER HIGH TRIGLYCERIDES WITHOUT MEDICINE.......2004-01-03
I started researching this topic about 2 years ago when my 35 year old husband became violently sick one night, he went the next morning for a blood test and his triglycerides were over 1800. They should be around 150 for a normal person. My husband has what Dr. Murkin calls Diabetic genes (all of his siblings and father suffer from high tri's & cholesterol). His HDL was 20 and his cholesterol was 400. After 2 weeks on Murkin, tricor and niacin he's bloods were in a good range. Since my husband & I prefer not to take medicine, he dropped the niacin and tricor after about a month. His bloods remained low with just the Murkin Diet. He began cheating about 6 months ago and spiraled out of control, a recent blood test showed tri's up above 2000. We are back on the diet in a big way and we will never go off of it again. I highly recommend this book!!
A book that can change (and maybe even save) your life.......2003-07-07
Fat Free, Flavor Full is the book where Dr Mirkin lays down the thought and the science behind his 20-gram/ "20/30" plan. If a Mirkin book has been recommended to you by a doctor, this is the book to read (get it from the library if you must, but do get it). He lays out his story, explains why genuinely low-fat diet is important, and the links between high fat and disease. I cannot recommend this book enough for those with high cholesterol, who have typeII diabetes, or TypeII runs in their family.
For most Americans it requires a bit of a seachange in eating habits, but it's well worth it. With the right foods, you can lose weight while eating as much as you want(I work in a very physically demanding job, build up a whale of an appetite, and teeny portions of food are simply NOT going to cut it!).
His tone can be a bit magisterial at times and I personally don't share his dislike for soybean products, but the science and reasoning behind this book are undeniable. If you are serious about losing extra weight and living healthier, get this book. Read it, absorb it, make the change, and live better.
AWESOME NO BULL WAY OF LIFE.......2002-11-05
I absolutely love Mirkin's books. My hubbie and I converted to his "life style change" 6 months ago and we practically had to go out and buy a new wardrobe because of all the weight we lost. I went from 136 to 102 and he went from 220 to 180 -- all in about 4 months. Neither of us starved or went hungry to do it!
Mirkin's theory is rock solid, and you can't argue with results. Limiting that fat intake and eating LOTS of high fiber filling foods (unrefined carbos like fruits, veggies, and beans) works 100% more effective than any stupid fad diet I've seen.
His recipes taste great and his 19 meals rule makes the diet easy to follow (every 19 healthy meals you get 1 or 2 "free meals")
Definately get his books if you want to get realistic and are tired of all the fad diet junk out there!!

The Type 2 Diabetes Cookbook: Simple & Delicious Low-Sugar, Low-Fat, & Low-Cholesterol Recipes.......2005-10-16
Very good book with lots of wonderful recipes that anyone would enjoy. Healthy food prepared simply and delicious.
The Type II Diabetes Cookbook: Simple and Delicious Low-Sug.......2001-10-16
This is a wonderful book. It has useful information about diabetes, including the effects of stress. It contains many useful charts. One of the best features of this book are popular recipies that have been adapted for a diabetic diet. You don't have to sacrifice enjoyment in order to eat well.
It does contain ingredients that myth declares taboo. This book will show you how to use foods in a healthy way. If you are using books that were written 10 years ago, I would replace them with this and similar books. This book is up-to-date with medical findings.
Simple Recipes.......2000-06-11
This book contained many simple and quick recipes for this special diet needs of a diebetic. Substitutes were listed, however, some sugar is used in a few recipes.

Good Fat-Free Cookbook.......2005-02-16
This is a good cook book for people who are wanting to cut their fat intake. I bought this book in 1997, and after using the recipes in this book, along with some other low-fat cookbooks that I had at the time, I managed to lose a decent amount of weight and get healthier. The recipes are good, my kids even liked them. Some of the nice features in this book are that each recipe has a shopping list at the bottom of the page, it includes diabetic exchanges, and the book even includes a 14-day menu plan. I used that plan for the times when I was trying something new and wasn't quite sure what I should serve with it. All in all, I'm happy with it, and I still use many of the recipes in this book 7 years later.
I have a question.......2004-01-05
I was just wondering where you find some of the ingredients used in the cookbook such as Buttermilk Blend, Lighter Bake and Fat Free Pancake Mix. Is there a particular store you can shop at to purchase them? Thank You.
Tastes Great!.......2002-07-18
I have had this book for several years. My family cooks out of it often and have we enjoyed everything we have prepared. It offers recipes for all "tastes". The book lets you know if you can "make ahead", if it is "easy", etc., and even provides a grocery list for you. Includes dietary exchanges, also. Makes eating fat free easy! No more excuses! :) I am ordering more of Jyl's books today!
The Fat Free Living Super Cookbook.......2002-07-12
Over several months I tried many of the recipes in this cookbook. I could not honestly rate any of them even "fair."
Great cookbook for diabetics........1999-03-23
Really good recipes. It is great for people watching their fat content. Great for diabetics, it includes exchanges.

Fat Free Living 2.......2007-02-08
Love the book- bought 8 more similar titles. Replaced all the cholesterol-laden, fat-dripping, high calorie cookbooks I used for years. Great CookBook. Easy - Tasty - Healthy, on my! One in a series by Jyl- I have them all. Great stuff.
Customer Reviews:
kudos to losing weight for diabetics.......2004-01-06
this cookbook by jenny craig is fantastic. i am on jenny craig right now and while i am not diabetic, it does run in the family; better safe than sorry. so far i have used the french toast recipe and the ground beef recipe. it offers advice/exchanges on carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, meats and their substitutes, fruits and veggies and a new category. OTHER. i highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight and is diabetic or has family members who are diabetic. THIS BOOK EXPLAINS HOW CARBOHYDRATES CAN AFFECT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS FOR DIABETICS. to me that is more important than a low carb fad diet. there has to be meaning to it. this puts it into perspective.

Book Description
Devoted solely to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet!
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (both forms of IBD), celiac disease, IBS, cystic fibrosis, chronic diarrhea, candidiasis, and autism.
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is based on the work of Elaine Gottschall, who wrote a groundbreaking book called Breaking the Vicious Cycle. In an effort to heal her daughter's Crohn's disease, Gottschall researched the role of intestinal microbes in the disease, and discovered research done for celiac disease that explained the importance of eliminating certain carbohydrates from the diet. By eliminating these carbohydrates, you can reduce the toxins produced by intestinal microbes and the corresponding mucus production that contributes -- and even causes -- digestive ailments like Crohn's, IBS, and celiac disease. What's more, this diet has been used by many parents who are turning to the SCD to help their children with developmental disorders.

Customer Reviews:
I had excellent results with this cookbook........1999-03-22
I ordered this book a couple of weeks ago and have become obsessed with these recipes! I have made many of the breads in the book and most of them have turned out great!
Customer Reviews:
This book is a life saver when you crave sweets on a diet........1998-11-24
The hardest part about dieting is the urge to blow your diet when you need to eat something sweet and high in calories, almost forbidden while dieting. I was thrilled to find this book and have made many of the recipes already and can honestly say it saved me from disaster. I now keep many of the basic ingredients in the house so I can make something to get me over the brink of no return and keep me on my diet. Most of the recipes are simple to make and taste great. I have recently purchased another title written by Jyl Steinback and look forward to many great choices. Keep up the good work!
