4 out of 5 stars Never too old.......2007-08-10

You're never too old to look at relationships from a different perspective, and this book gives you that opportunity. It's an easy read with plenty of anectdotal content and humor. It's along the lines of Men are from Mars, but from a different angle. I would recommend to anyone - man or woman - who would like to fine tune his or her approach to building a deeper understanding and relationship with a partner.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for couples to read together...single or married.......2007-03-24

My boyfriend and I went to the author's seminar at our church and this book has really helped us to understand (or at least attempt) to understand how each other thinks. It really does help build strong relationships if both partners are willing to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book aloud with your spouse (or significant other)!.......2007-09-25

My wife and I read this book out loud together over a period of weeks. We laughed a lot. There are some great insights in it to help couples facilitate their communications with each other. I recommend it to couples, married or not, who want to learn more about how to meet one another's needs. There are many more dynamics to personalities than gender differences, but the gender issues are real. Have fun!

2 out of 5 stars Relations between men and women........2007-03-09

Pretty much just one couples opinion on relationship. Some parts made sense others were just so so.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Read!.......2007-01-20

This book was a wonderful buy that I would recommend to all couples! It helps each gender understand their spouse and shows you how you can improve your relationship. It doesn't run down men or women and doesn't encourage you to try to change your spouse, but understand why they are the way they are and learn how to work with that. A great book!!!

4 out of 5 stars Men are like Waffles - Women are like Spaghetti.......2006-03-18

This book really hits home on the differences between men and women. How each looks at a relationship and how each reacts to situations. A must read before getting married.

4 out of 5 stars Smart and Funny.......2005-08-22

For any Christian couple that is looking for help with their realationship and understanding their mate this is a must have. I found this book funny and insightful and very helpful. The only way it could have been better is funny list of things from woman's perspective. If you read it you'll understand, ladies.

The barnyard rooster crows and Jack wakes up -- hungry, of course! What does he want for breakfast? A big pancake! But first, Jack's mother needs flour from the mill, an egg from the black hen, milk from the spotted cow, butter churned from fresh cream, and firewood for the stove. Will Jack ever get his pancake?

With his trademark vibrant collage illustrations and a lively text, Eric Carle has created a mouthwatering tale for young readers.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for young people.......2007-04-10

While volunteering for a reading program, I ran across this book. I read it to some 4 and 5 year olds. The students loved the colorful pictures and asked me to read this book over and over. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a child in their life.

    2 out of 5 stars pancakes.......2007-02-16

I ordered 14 Eric Carle books because I loved his hungry catterpiller, polar bear and brown bear books however the 14 others I ordered were very disappointing. I never have time to go to the post office or else I would have returned every single one including this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A nice book.......2006-09-04

This is a fun story. Helps children understand the logical, sequential steps involved in getting something done, plus it's a fun tale. The pictures are enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-09-01

This is such a great book; my daughter cries out for "real" pancakes after every read. The book shows in very basic and simple steps how a traditional pancake (including its ingredients) is made. Hungry "Jack" (is this irony or coincidence??!) is sent on various errands by his mother in the process - get an egg (feed the hen first!), reap the wheat and get it milled, collect the firewood etc - until in the end he gets the reward for his hard work: a delicious fresh well-earned pancake! My daughter (2 1/2) can relate very well to the step-by-step approach and actually insisted on getting the firewood for our own pancakes after reading the book. Try the recipe-like description of how the mother and Jack mix all the ingredients together yourself for a lovely pancake which is nothing like the pancake-mix-stuff ones. The illustrations are typically Carle: bright, colourful and vivid. All in all, this book is a true favourite in our household.

3 out of 5 stars Pancakes, Pancakes by Eric Carle.......2005-11-14

Guess why I want you to read Pancakes, Pancakes.I want you to read it because it is very good and very, very fun to read. This is what the story is about: One morning Jack wanted to have a pancake for breakfast, but his mother was busy. So Jack had to go around to get what they needed for pancakes. In the end Jack ate the pancakes he and his mother had made.

I hope you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars My kids love this book.......2007-05-26

While not as cute and creative as the original Curious George books, this one is decent. My kids don't mind at all and they love to read it over & over again.

    1 out of 5 stars Fraud.......2006-03-22

Buyer beware--this is written "in the style of HA Ray," i.e. by a faceless corporation and is illustrated by "Vipah Interactive" and was apparently written in the mid-90s. In other words, it's a scam. The story and illustrations both lack the charm and creativity of the original Curious George books--please avoid this attempt to cash in on the original.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun story.......2005-12-29

My 18 month old loves to have this book read to her. She enjoys seeing George make pancakes, and especially loves when he adds blueberries. It is a cute book, and reminds me of those I read as a child.

3 out of 5 stars Curious George breaks out a spatula.......2004-06-30

Curious George goes to a pancake breakfast (actually, it's more like a county fair). Then, he makes pancakes while the cook is away. He makes them quicker and better than the cook. Then the cook chases him away. As usual, George gets in a little bit of trouble. Then all is well, and everyone praises George.

This book has part of the charm of CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, with almost exactly the same plot. There's nothing surprising here-- kids and adults will see Curious George in another formulaic plot. This book was adapted from the Curious George film series, and it is based on characters created by H.A. Rey. It is NOT one of the George books written by H.A. Rey.

Some readers are delighted by Curious George, and the plot doesn't matter. In that case, choose CURIOUS GEORGE MAKES PANCAKES.

If you want a better story, try CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, or, better still, one of the H.A. Rey-authored original Curious George stories, such as CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO THE HOSPITAL or CURIOUS GEORGE GETS A MEDAL.

4 out of 5 stars Brings back memories.......2003-11-25

Everytime I see a Curious George book I remember how much I loved reading them as a kid, I must confess that nothing has changed. This is a funny, entertaining book for both adults reading to children and for children themselves.

In the small Canadian town of Coal Harbour, in a quaint restaurant called The Girl on the Red Swing, everything comes on a waffle--lasagna, fish, you name it. Even waffles! Eleven-year-old Primrose Squarp loves this homey place, especially its owner, Kate Bowzer, who takes her under her wing, teaches her how to cook, and doesn't patronize or chastise her, even when she puts her guinea pig too close to the oven and it catches fire. Primrose can use a little extra attention. Her parents were lost at sea, and everyone but her thinks they are dead. Her Uncle Jack, who kindly takes her in, is perfectly nice, but doesn't have much time on his hands. Miss Perfidy, her paid babysitter-guardian, smells like mothballs and really doesn't like children, and her school guidance counselor, Miss Honeycut, an uppity British woman of the world, is too caught up in her own long-winded stories to be any kind of confidante. Nobody knows what exactly to think of young Primrose, and Primrose doesn't quite know what to make of her small community, either.

She entertains herself in a variety of ways--mostly by wryly observing those around her with wisdom, compassion, and slightly cynical humor that belie her years. She also sits on the dock and waits for her parents to get back, goes to the store and tells the grocer the cottage cheese has expired (not appreciated), and writes recipes that her mother taught her in a memo pad. About Caramel Apples, she writes: "Do not muck around with chocolate or nuts or anything else fancy that may tempt you. It will only gum up the works. Sometimes you get tempted to make something wonderful even better, but in doing so you lose what was so wonderful to begin with." Everything on a Waffle is ultimately a folksy, Garrison Keillor-style take on small-town life, spiced with sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant anecdotes about the quirks and adventures of individual townspeople as seen through Primrose's wise eyes. It's a quiet, but very funny book, infused with the hope of a girl who knows in her heart that there are things that science, and even the uppity Miss Honeycut, can't explain. We first were introduced to author Polly Horvath with her National Book Award finalist, The Trolls, which you absolutely have to read if you haven't already! (Ages 9 to 13) --Karin Snelson

    Book Description

    A Newbery Honor Book
By the author of The Trolls, a National Book Award Finalist.

My name is Primrose Squarp. I am eleven years old. I have hair the color of carrots in apricot glaze (recipe to follow), skin fair and clear where it isn't freckled, and eyes like summer storms.

Readers will know right from the start that the narrator of Everything on a Waffle is going to tell her story straight and pull no punches. Primrose's parents have been lost at sea, but she believes without an iota of doubt that they are still alive, somewhere. She moves in with her Uncle Jack, but feels generally friendless. Her only real refuge is a local restaurant called The Girl on the Red Swing, where the owner, Miss Bowzer, serves everything on waffles -- except advice and good sense, which come free of charge and are always reliable.

Food in general plays an important role in Primrose's journey toward peace and understanding (a recipe dictated in her unmistakable voice is appended to each chapter), and readers will eagerly cheer her on through this funny, bittersweet novel.

5 out of 5 stars "And a child shall lead them ....".......2007-08-27

Although of Polly Horvath's work is rich in quirky characters full of wit and droll humor, this one is a bit more over-the-top than usual. Primrose, an eleven-year-old, understands and reveals far more grace than any of the obsessive and neurotic adults who populate her life. Indeed, she shows profound wisdom and serenity within the context of severe personal tragedy and unflinchingly seeks the best in those around her, even when they are particularly insensitive to her eleven-year-old needs. And the plot keeps readers reading with all the charming chortles and impish irony that is Horvath's hallmark. This is truly a wonderful book; one that all adults who deal with the `tween-age child should read and heed. Horvath's voice is always her own, but the quirky characters and ironic humor is vaguely mindful of Lemony Snicket of the Unfortunate Events series. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to start, worth the read, loved the ending........2007-06-08

My 4th grade son brought this book home from school for a reading assignment. He was having some trouble getting into it at first, and was frustrated. So I read him a couple chapters out loud, and got hooked, myself.

Part of what is frustrating, is also part of what gives the book sparkle: it jumps in at different points, and then fills in what has been skipped. I loved it. The style and the vocabulary expect intelligence in the reader, while the story itself keeps to the appropriate level of 11-year-old Primrose, the central character. She is as bright as the audience is expected to be.

I particularly liked the realistic hard-edge of problems that Primrose has to face, along with her extreme optimism, even as she faces life's trials head on. Lots of things go wrong. People die, get in trouble with the law, get seriously injured, lose their homes, and even lose a toe. But through it all, Primrose responds with reasonable emotion (sadness, frustration, annoyance, joy, excitement, boredom) without become dramatic or depressed.

Some here have complained of the ending, but I thought it was perfectly balanced to the rest of the book. A nice balance of encouraging realistic perceptions of the troubles of life, along with the reasonableness of keeping up hope.

A worthwhile read. Particularly well suited to gifted kids at the 4th through 6th grade level. But easily enjoyable at any age beyond that.

    Everything in a Book Review

How would you feel if your parents were lost at sea? Well that's just how the twelve year old girl Primrose felt, from the realistic fiction book Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath.
When Primrose's parents get lost at sea, it takes many people to convince her that she will never see her parents again. She must live with her crazy neighbor until she is sent to live with her cool uncle. Her principal is falling for her uncle, which makes things worse. Now she see her mean principal wherever she goes. She keeps wanting to forget about her parents but the past keeps haunting her. Primrose must face the hard fact that her parents are gone and that she may never see them again, or will she?
I really liked this book. Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. Horvath leaves a great mystery and an even better ending that will bring you to the edge of you seat. She keeps the book interesting and fun to read. I would recommend it to anyone that likes to read realistic fiction. The age group I recommend this book to 10-15 year olds.

2 out of 5 stars Everything On a Waffle summarized by C.G........2007-03-02

i wouldn't recommend this book because it is really confusing in 65% of the story.I had to read it twice to understand most of it. For instance, at the beginning of the book it says thet she lives with her parents and then about a week later she lives with some old lady. It doesn't tell you why she moved until the middle, so you are kind of thrown off and confused through the whole beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Students give rave reviews.......2007-01-04

Polly Horvath's sense of humor and playful language gave my sixth graders a lot to reflect upon. We found that each chapter gave way to many predictions. The students became very good detectives as they used context clues in their reading.

This book has also become a great model for student writing. Ms. Horvath uses colorful descriptions and analogies throughout her storytelling. I would highly recommend this novel for classroom reading

    1 out of 5 stars A Cookbook Joke.......2007-01-20

I usually look at the dimensions of books I buy on line but did not on this one. Too bad. It was about 3" X 4" - like a toddler's first book. It should have been half the price - including shipping - and probably not worth the trouble anyway. The recipes weren't even worth reading. I'm sorry Amazon chose to link this book with a very good waffle maker. I based my purchase on the credibility of Amazon. I guess that was a mistake.

3 out of 5 stars The not worth the money waffle book.......2007-01-11

Very small book for the price, no recipies for basic waffles, way too much money for this so-so book.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious pancakes and waffles.......2005-02-22

There's nothing I enjoy more after a hard morning workout in the mountains or the gym for breakfast than a huge stack of pancakes or waffles. I usually opt for whole wheat flour over sourdough and I always add some sliced fruit like bananas or berries with some walnuts or other nuts. Top it off with a little butter and syrup and prepare for a heavenly meal. Mmmmm. Many good recipes in this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Yummy, Pancakes & Waffles.......2001-03-27

When I want to make pancakes or waffles this is the book I always reach for. The Buttermilk Pancakes, Cornmeal Blueberry Pancakes are two of our most favorite. Hungry for the long-time-ago taste of Buckwheat Pancakes, then you'll love the flavor of these. Whether you need something for breakfast or want to try a new version on a favorite snack for the children (mine adore the Peanut Butter Waffles anytime of the day), waffles are a good choice, not only because they freeze well, but they taste Great!! Proving again that good things come in small packages; this is a Totally complete Pancake and Waffle Cookbook!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Eating.......2000-12-11

I have been preparing sourdough pancakes and waffles for over 25 years using dozens of methods and techniques, but the simple recipe on pg 56 beats them all for flavor, texture, and overnite preparation! The Sour Cream Silver Dollar pancakes and the Cornmeal Blueberry Cakes are a tie for second place at our breakfast table. I would rate this little book 5 stars, but I haven't tried more than about four of the recipes-yet. As they say, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Tasty !.......2007-01-06

I bought this as a gift and I have to say it's one of the more beautiful cooking books I've gotten recently. Delicious looking photos and step by step instructions are included for every mouth watering recipe. I especially like the fact that the differences between crepes, pancakes and blinis are discussed. Both savory and sweet recipies are included. Easy to follow instructions for novices and more advanced cooks alike.

Very nice variety of recipes and great tasting waffles!

    5 out of 5 stars Waffle Heaven.......2002-10-31

At this point, we have only used a few of the recipies in this book. We generally like to eat healthy, but when we want a "mean and nasty" treat, we grab the waffle maker and this book. We figure that with all the variations in this book, we will have years of variety trying them all.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice Variety.......2001-09-26

I like this little cookbook. There is a large variety of recipes in here. There is also a section for waffles with whole grains and waffles with fruit additions. Since I have a belgium waffle maker, I usually have to double the recipes to get more than one waffle. Every time I make waffles I'll use a different recipe from this book, and all of them have turned out tasting great.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Rathmell German Never Fails to Deliver!.......2000-02-01

I recently got a waffle iron, but the recipe included with the appliance was disappointing to say the least. I borrowed this book from the library because I have been very pleased with German's bread machine books and thought I would test some of the recipes to see if the book was worth adding to my collection. I shouldn't have worried! I could have bought it outright and saved myself a little time! We have tried the Sweet Butter Waffles (they are as heavenly as they sound) and the Peanut Butter Waffles (also very yummy and popular with the kids as well). In addition to the fabulous recipes, German also gives detailed information on waffle making in general (how much batter to use, how to tell when the waffle is done, etc.) and how to adapt recipes if you want to make pancakes instead. She even gives you "permission" to just mix everything together at once if you don't want to take the time to separate the egg (and I can tell you from personal experience, the results are just as delicious!) If you love waffles, or if you've always wanted to make them but were too chicken to try, this is the book for you!

4 out of 5 stars mmm pancakes with your siblings.......2007-09-12

Pancakes and children together having fun on a lovely morning with colorful illustrations. What more can you ask for? This is a story filled with fun illustrations and a silly story that focuses on pancakes. The only problem I have is that sometimes just reading the text for younger children, they won't fully understand it. The illustrations tell a lot of the story that the words don't so be ready to give some explanations to little ones. I read this with my two year old and he loved the rhyming text and silly the brothers and sister having a blast at breakfast time.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2004-04-10

My son, who is two, received this book as a gift, and it is one of his favorites. He always laughs hysterically when we read it, and he walks around reciting lines from the book. This book has become THE book that I buy for birthday presents, because it's great fun to read and to make the pancakes, too!

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Pancakes! is a hit!!!.......2004-04-04

A few months ago my son had the opportunity to attend a book reading by Tamson Weston and we purchased an autographed copy of Hey, Pancakes. It has become the FAVORITE in our house. The simplicity of the story is captivating for my kids, even my 2 year old has memorized the words. In this day and age of high tech tv, computers and video games it's nice to curl up with a book the whole family loves! As the last sentence in the book states 'Let's go out into the world and give a pancake(or panshake as my two year old says!) cheer!' Tamson Weston has a winner with this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Granchild Entertainment.......2003-11-21

I bought this book as part of my weekend entertainment plan for my 6 year old grandson. The stay was a success! I think, in great part, due to our sunday morning "Pancake Party". We read Hey Pancakes! the night before, I had pre-purchased the ingredients with, of course, real maple syrup and then we reviewed the recipe in the back of the book and discussed what and why of each ingredient and even had a little lesson in measuring. It was great fun for both Grandpa and Grandson. I think it'll be a weekend that'll be remembered.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delicious Book.......2003-11-19

Hey Pancakes by Tamson Weston, is a charming and delightful book for early readers. As an educator of young children ,I found my group squealing with delight as they got into the fun rhythm of the story. The imagination of the reader is spiked as he relates to the "pancake toll" The book is lively, and even the nonreader chimes in on the second reading as he anticipates the comfortable and natural rhyme. The whimsical ilustrations are very much in keeping with the spirit of the text. This book is a winner, and will delight young readers for years to come. I look forward to many more book from this very talented new author.P.S. The pancake recipe was yummy, and we did get our fingers sticky.
