Look before you buy.......2007-08-13
Since this is a cookbook, I should have looked through a copy before I purchased. Many of the recipes do not feature a full day of cooking in the crockpot. Therefore, they can't be used on a workday.
A Few great Recipes.......2007-08-08
I made a few recipes from this cook book that turned out great, and another few that weren't great at all. There was a lot of variety and different/new ideas, but it was not ideal for someone that is using the slow cooker to save time. A lot of the recipes involved a lot of ingredients, a lot of pre-cooking things before they went in the cooker, and also additional steps involved during the cooking (ex: after 2 hours turn the slow cooker on low,etc.)... and all of these things make it difficult for the cook who is away all day at work to even attempt. Also, many of the recipes called for short cooking times, like 3-4 hours, and that isn't ideal for a person who is working outside of the home for 9 hours prior to dinner.
Great Recipes - Great Cookbook!.......2007-08-05
I love this book! I recently purchased several cookbooks on slow cooking for use in a class I was teaching and this was my favorite on the subject for several reasons.
I like cookbooks that are organized so that I can find what I'm looking for fast. This book has good organized chapters and a terrific index which makes it possible for me to find whatever I'm looking for in just a few seconds.
I like the variety of recipes contained in this book, over 350 of them, for both the traditional dishes we have always cooked in our slow cookers like soups, stews, chilies, and pot roasts, and also for dishes that I hadn't thought of cooking in a slow cooker like desserts, jams, sauces, and casseroles. Actually, the thing that caught my eye and was one of the main reasons for buying this book was a chapter with instructions on cooking polenta, risotto, grits, rice, and other grains. Once I had prepared polenta in my slow cooker according to the directions in this book, I was hooked! I will never again have to stand over a hot stove stirring polenta for 40 minutes or more; nor will I ever have to stir my risotto or grits either!
I have many cookbooks in my library that are disappointing just because they read like a laundry list of recipes; there are no comments such as what to serve the dish with, or helpful hints, or little blurbs on how the recipe came about. The comments preceding a recipe help me as the reader get a glimpse of the author's reasons for putting the particular recipe in the book, or a description on the recipe such as "this is a hearty thick soup, perfect for a cool evening," or what to serve the dish with. Those comments make the book readable for those of us who enjoy reading cookbooks like novels, and help those who hate to cook decide if a recipe is suitable for their particular purpose. This book has comments preceding every recipe which are very helpful.
I think this book is an excellent choice for cooks of all skill levels. It contains all of the preliminary information a cook needs to begin slow cooking, even for someone who hasn't done it before. It discusses what slow cooking actually is, cooking times, temperatures, cooking at high altitudes, safety, adapting regular recipes to a slow cooker, and numerous other helpful subjects. This book also has conversion charts and it even has a page that lists the manufacturers of slow cookers and their web sites.
The one drawback that I can see for this book is that there are no pictures. Many of us are visual cooks and would like to see what a dish is supposed to look like. That isn't possible with this book, and is the only thing that would prevent me from purchasing several copies for wedding and shower gifts; I feel like gift books are better if they have pictures. I do plan however, to purchase three more copies to give to my daughters; the recipes in this book are so easy and good it may help them avoid stopping for fast food so often and improve the nutrition and health of my grandchildren
Is ketchup a recipe ingredient to you?.......2007-07-19
Your answer to the question will determine whether you like this book. I almost purchased this book, and then found it at the library to look at first. I found 4 recipes that I would consider making. One recipe (but not one of the 4) listed ketchup as a recipe ingredient, and others listed similar prepared processed sauces likely to have lots of sugar. Its probably fine for someone using the crock pot to save time and bother - but I like to know the ingredients, and ketchup doesn't cut it for me.
Start cookin'!.......2007-07-12
This is a great book, but I didn't look close enough. For the price (under $8.00) I was expecting a small book with a few recipes and didn't really review the listing. This is a thick book with a number of categories, including many you wouldn't expect in a slow cooker cookbook. Good book...Great value...Easy recipes!

A Wonderful Tool for the Kitchen.......2007-10-10
I love this cookbook. My family was on vacation and a woman we were traveling with had been working her way through the book. She recommended it so I thought I'd give it a try. I have so many cookbooks at home that look great in the store but once you try to cook or bake with them, they really aren't that good. This is not a book that will be moved to storage any time soon. I liked it so much, I've been buying copies for everyone I know that uses a crockpot. I also like the fact that I can omit items from a recipe if I don't eat them - you can't do that with baking. The index is very well organized so if you know either the main ingredient you'd like to use or the name of the dish, you can find what you're looking for.
Fix-It and Forget-It.......2007-09-10
This is a great cookbook. Easy to follow recipes and some very great tasting ones! I recommend this book highly.
Excellent book for moms!.......2007-08-11
I use the recipes in this book all the time! There are so many options and so many varieties on the same recipe. Great buy!
Fix it and Forget it? I say , "Just Forget it!".......2007-08-05
I just recently purchased "Fix-it and Forget-it Cookbook, Feasting with your Slow Cooker." It is a National #1 New York Times bestseller, so I thought I would have a great book to read while traveling and to cook from at home.
I like cookbooks with pictures; this book has no pictures. I like cookbooks with comments, stories, or history of the recipes; this book has no comments, stories, or history on any of the recipes. I like cookbooks with new and innovative dishes; this book has nothing new or innovative.
If you like cookbooks with a laundry-list of recipes, many just slightly changed from the one next to it, then this book may be for you. If you like community cookbooks, where the recipes are only tested by the contributor, a person you most likely don't know personally, and therefore don't know anything about that person's cooking skills or personal taste, then this book may be for you.
I ask you, what are you going to do with seven similar but slightly different recipes for pea soup? How about 20+ recipes for beef stew? Or an equal amount of recipes for Swiss steak?
This cookbook has over 800 recipes, but they are nothing special; just recipes that are available in every community cookbook or on-line recipe web site. I couldn't actually find one main dish recipe that I would want to serve company, nor was there anything new that "blew me away." Actually, I have never seen a larger collection of b-o-r-i-n-g food anywhere else in my life!
On the upside, there is a small chapter on vegetables (which includes rice dishes (I thought rice was a grain, not a vegetable!) and some stuffing recipes (also not a vegetable). While the recipes in this section are nothing innovative or new, there are some helpful ones, like Caramelized Onions, which I have made; the slow cooker makes them easy so they can be used in other recipes. There are several other good recipes that I have tried, like one for acorn squash and a couple of good cabbage recipes. I found it interesting that there was a recipe for "Extra Good Mashed Potatoes," which had been contributed by five different ladies. The instructions tell you how to cook them, but forget to tell you to mash them before serving!
All said, this is a book of very pedestrian recipes that have been poorly edited. If you are into "meat and potatoes" or like to cook food with no imagination, you may want to pick up this book. Since so many copies have already been sold, chances are you were fooled by the cute cover as I was and already own a copy. If you own it, all is not lost--you can prepare seven similar, but just slightly different kinds of pea soup this week!
Love this!.......2007-07-06
I love my crockpot and this book is part of the reason why. I could throw all the ingredients in, leave for work or school, and come home to a wonderful smelling house and dinner was done! Our favorite recipes from here were Taco Soup and Chicken Tortilla Soup. Very good, especially on a cold winter day.

The most usable collection of slow cooker recipes.......2006-07-04
There's something for everyone in this book. It includes a wide variety of recipes: every day dishes, fancier dishes for company, main dishes, side dishes, one-pot meals, recipes using fresh ingredients, and time-saving recipes using more processed ingredients (i.e. canned soups, etc.). I've tried a number of the recipes so far and each has been a winner, impressing my discriminating friends and family. The wealth of tips from the kitchen is most beneficial. I have tried a number of slow cooker cookbooks and this is far and away my personal favorite.
Really good introduction.......2006-02-18
We greatly enjoyed the selection of receipes. The price to quality ratio is very high.
disappointing.......2004-10-08
This book is very disappointing. My main complaint is that many of the recipes call for ingredients such as frozen vegetables, canned soup, mayonnaise, and one which actually calls for an entire bottle of Catalina salad dressing. This really is not my style of cooking. Another reviewer commented that a lot of recipes need something done throughout the cooking process or are partially cooked on the stove before being put into the Crockpot. This was a big turn off for me too. I suggest trying a different book.
Good book.......2004-05-26
This is a great book for someone who isn't looking for weird recipes. It doesn't use things that you have never heard of before, or that you have to drive an hour to find. Quick to read, easy to make, great to eat. Now you can make more than just pot roast and potatoes.
Not good for people who work all day.......2004-05-07
I was not happy with this cookbook because many of the recipes required that I do something during the day with the recipe, like stir it at 4 hours into cooking, or cook something on a stove then put it in the slow cooker. I work 100 hour work weeks and I really need something quick and easy, and this book did NOT have many recipes that were quick or easy. I was so upset with it I had to write in to give the warning out.

Perfect find. We need all the help we can get to save money and make easy meals in this busy world.
This is pitiful.......2005-12-12
I never write in reviews but this is the worst cookbook I've ever bought. We probably have 40 or 50.
There are only 101 recipes and 7 of them are for either rabbit or venison. I don't know anyone who cooks either. The index in the back is listed in page order. I'm not making this up. Usually you turn to the back and look up beef or chicken or whatever and it shows you the recipes for that ingredient. When you look at the index here it gives the name of the recipe on the first page and then the 2nd page.
Don't buy this! I'd give it a zero if I could.
I had to have this one!.......2003-10-29
I saw this cookbook and knew it was for me. I start my meal before I go to work and it can cook all day while I am gone. When I come home the dinner is done and not allot of dishes after we eat to clean up.

Too many cans ..........2005-07-07
I bought this book because I went back to work and wanted to use our crockpot more often, but should have looked around some more. While this book didn't seem to have as many recipes that required a lot of preparation - sometimes the prep work negates the benefit of using the darned thing in the first place - it also relies too much on canned products, in my opinion. If all I need to do is open a can, I could just buy some Chunky Soup and skip the whole cooking process.
I was hoping for something a little more healthy and can probably make some of these recipes work with minor adjustments - and it might be great for beginning cooks. It just wasn't worth $10.20 for me and I wish I hadn't spent the money.
My first soup!.......2003-10-29
I never made soup before I got this wonderful cookbook. Now I try to make a soup or stew at least once a week. Very easy to make and tasty.

All types of simple recipes.......2002-04-01
This is a varied compilation of recipes, about 140 or so total, ranging from meat dishes deserts. It's well organized and the instructions are easy to follow. In addition, there aren't too many "odd-ball" ingredients that are difficult to get.
Crock-pot cooking is generally pretty easy anyway--for most of the recipes you just throw all the ingredients in and come back several hours later to a delicious meal.
I bought the book specifically looking for vegetarian recipes; I didn't notice until later that the same author has an entire book devoted to such. However, there are several vegetarian recipes in this book too.
Love my crockpot, love this book........2000-06-19
I cook with my crockpot at least once a week. I am always hunting for new good recipes to keep my family happy. This book was full of them! It has all the old standbys, but also has a significant number of recipes which I've never seen elsewhere before.

Does she have stock in the Campbell's company?.......2007-01-15
I love my crockpot and am always looking for new cookbooks. This isn't a good one. I have never seen so many recipes calling for frozen/canned vegetables, Velveeta and cans and cans of soup. Several recipes call for three cans of cream of whatever soup. Not healthy; not imaginative. Thankfully, I checked it out of the library. I won't be cooking one recipe from it before it's returned.
Tis the Season for Slow Cooked Meals .......2004-12-08
While reading, it is fun to have dinner cooking. You don't have to do anything more than put the ingredients in the Crockpot and then you are free to catch up on reading or maybe even do some decorating or anything else you want to do besides cook.
Penny E. Stone created this book for Entertaining and there are 101 recipes. Each serving costs only seventy-five cents, so it is much cheaper than going out to eat and your home will be filled with delicious home-cooked aromas.
Many of the recipes can be started 7 or more hours before guests even arrive. So you don't have to be in a state of stress when people arrive. There is nothing to worry about. You open the Crockpot and a meal is served. There are a few recipes where you add vegetables after four hours or stir after a certain number of hours. Just set your timer and you won't have to worry about the time.
Delicious Recipes Include:
Lasagna Rolls with Cheese Filling
Spiced Corned Beef Glazed in Cranberry-Wine Sauce
Chicken Tetrazzini (made with chicken and mushroom soup)
Spicy Cheese Dip
Baked Rhubarb Pudding
Hot Cider
Mistletoe Punch
This is a sweet and simple book filled with ideas for busy or new cooks. The recipes are all very easy to make. The recipes are designed to serve 6-8 people. If you are planning for more guests, just buy another crockpot. You might want two because then you can make dinner and dessert in crockpots.
Even if you don't own a crockpot, there are many recipes you could adapt for the stovetop or oven. The ingredient lists give me lots of ideas for seasoning meats and making quick deserts. Like the creamy fudge sauce just includes melting all the ingredients together and that could even be made in a regular saucepan.
Just think of a slow cooked meal, the aroma drifting through the house and Christmas Music. What could be more comforting? Best of all, you can relax when company arrives.

Crockpot Cooking is for me!.......2003-10-29
I love crockpot cooking. I can make meals at low cost and little effort. A must buy!
Amazing variety of recipes.......2003-09-11
"Crazy About Crockpots! 101 Recipes For Entertaining at Less than 75 cents a Serving" is an unusual book in that it contains none of the stews and soups that you expect in a crockpot cookbook (actually you will find them in the companion book "Crazy About Crockpots! 101 Soups and Stews for Less than 75 cents per Serving"). Instead, this book contains a wide variety of unusual recipes for using your crockpot to prepare casseroles, desserts, and even drinks. It has a great recipe for BBQ Beef sandwiches (always a personal favorite meal) as well as really good recipes for Seasoned Chicken and Rice, Lemon-Herb Chicken Breasts, and Sweet and Sour Pork. There are several pages of dips as well as cobblers, puddings and sauces, and even drinks like Apple Cider, Wassail, and punch. If you never really knew what to do with that crockpot sitting around the house other than to heat up soup this is the place to find out what you can do. The results are delicious and the book deserves a recommended read designation.

Crockpot Cookery by Morris press.......2000-05-23
This is one of the better crockpot cookbooks. It has a wonderful variety of recipes in all catagories. They are quick and easy. The index is great you can find exactly what you are looking for in seconds. Contains many easy recipes that can be prepared in a short time . Best of all they do do require one to purchase a large variety of spices. The spices called for are the ones usually kept on hand.
I have purchased more expensive crockpot cookbooks that do not have the variety of recipes this one contains.

the start of the Crockpot.......2005-02-21
This book was published in 1975, old and outdated - WRONG!
This book helped start the Crockpot revolution - from recipes sweet (cheesecake) to savory (pepper steak), this book helps the cook use a crockpot without the "Crockpot helpers" or the frozen dinners currently advertised. You can make the "Honey Ribs and Rice" or the "Wild Rice Casserole" or any number of good things they have in the book.
So if the current craze for Crockpot cooking has you wanting to experiment, try this book first. Once you start using your Crockpot, you won't know how you managed to get supper together without it.
