5 out of 5 stars Very Useful for Philosophy Grad Students.......2007-02-23

This book is very useful for the philosophy student who already has some Greek, but lacks the vocabulary and the experience needed for reading philosophical texts. The first 49 chapters are a review of morphology and syntax and also introduce a great deal of useful vocabulary (no triremes here). The last 18 chapters consist of selections from Aristotle (many from the Physics, some from Parts of Animals, Metaphysics, De Anima, etc.) and additional English to Greek exercises. If you follow the book faithfully, you really will be reading Aristotle by the end. This book fills the gap between that intensive Greek course you took and actually being able to read Aristotle or Plato when you write your thesis.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2002-03-21

I was a student of New Testament Greek prior to picking up this book, but it helped me learn philisophical Greek rapidly. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a basic, or better, knowledge of the language. It woudn't help someone just starting without a teacher, but for the rest of us, it simply cannot be beat.

A one of a kind work that fills an important need. For graduate students and those undergraduates whose interest in learning ancient Greek is to read that great gift to our heritage, philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Greek grammars!.......2006-03-18

This is an excellent Greek grammar, but only for the
advanced! Except for Koine Greek, you will find about
everything there.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but totally overwhelming.......2005-10-10

Since most of you are probably required to buy this for class like me, this review may not be the most useful. But anyone thinking of buying this should know that it has every possible bit of information about Ancient Greek--and every tidbit, every little comment, is numbered. This means the student ends up reading a chapter, say, on verb stems, and reading numbers 1024 to 1112. Since the data is so organized, you'd think it's an easy reference, but no. If you're looking for something specific, it'll take some wading through numbers and symbols. Whatever you want is definitely in there--it just might take some time to find it.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best Greek grammar.......2003-12-15

I am sad to say that I never bought this Grammar during my four years of studying Classics while in college. If I had been smart and actually bought this when I started I could have saved myself a lot of time and prevented a lot of headaches. Now I know that Smythe is old, and some of his approaches are outdated, but that does not mean his grammar book is still effective. His work on both prepositions and moods of verbs are the best I have found and have helped me tremendously. There are some scholars who have surpassed Smythe's work in other areas of Greek grammar and syntax, but as far as a basic and comprehensive grammar goes, Smythe is still the best for your both your wallet and your studies.

5 out of 5 stars The best for all pre-modern Greek except Hellenistic........2002-01-14

This is an excellent reference book! It has passed the test of heavy usage, and it has outlasted many academic fads.

Smyth does a thorough yet concise job on the known varieties of written Greek usage from the Homeric epics up to the beginning of the Hellenistic period .

Smyth does not cover Hellenistic (Koiné) Greek as much, especially not for texts that have Semitic or Egyptian "flavors:" the Septuagint, New Testament and Egyptian Greek papyri. For real grammars on those, look up these authors: Wallace, Dana, Mantey, Robertson, Blass, Debrunner, Funk, Conybeare, Stock and Zerwick.

Some writers in the centuries between the reigns of Augustus and Constantine, and the Byzantines afterward, tried to "return" to Classical Attic usage in writing, with mixed results. When reading them, use both Smyth and a Hellenistic/Koiné grammar together, carefully.

5 out of 5 stars Need this book be praised?.......2000-06-07

Smyth is the only grammar for ancient Greek worth buying (besides the advanced treatments of specialized topics like Goodwin on the moods and tenses and Denniston on the particles). Unlike Latin, where the field of grammars is much wider, Smyth is the only English grammar of ancient Greek comprehensive enough to warrant any attention from Hellenists. Goodwin and Gulick's volume is too sparse in comparison (but note they cover prosody and Smyth does not) while Kaegi's is a step below theirs in depth. Ideally all intermediate level Greek students will begin to use this text as a reference grammar. Very reasonably priced for the wealth of information it contains. The book itself is also durable and will endure years of constant thumbing.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Best read straight through without stopping.......2006-04-26

I read this in a period of weeks while homeless in a city, each day I would return to the library and read another huge section, never missing a day...the incredible prolixity and repetition, far from being burdensome, were like great rolling waves of majesty and freedom upon which I floated until the last cantos, surely one of the greatest climaxes in all world literature, brought me to rest and peace as Odysseus was united with Christ, and sailed off through the ice. And then I knew that for the rest of my life I would be as free as Odysseus had showed me how to be in this work. How's that?

3 out of 5 stars Mithras and Apollo.......2001-01-26

I read Kazantzakis absorbing and compelling verse novel over a two-month period, rich and crazy as a Christmas fruit cake, and only to be nibbled in small doses. This is a deeply flawed work of consumate art; flawed, because it expresses a weltangshaung and philosophical stance utterly at odds with the complexities and values of the human spirit which it still succeeds in celebrating in verse of passion, intensity and beauty. Flawed, because it defines the human spirit in terms of the unsubtle, extroverted, violence of masculinity at its most obnoxious, a Nietzschean ubermensch driven to sweep through the human mind like a panzer division; flawed because it present a vision of utter and self-serving solipsism.

But of consumate art in that within those paramaters it creates, with a richness and intensity rarely encountered in modern literature, a detailed, elaborate and sensory world of image, passion and experience; and in positioning the human spirit dancing at the edge of the abyss, in celebrating the defining moments and relationships of life, it ultimately triumphs over its own weakness.

Its stages of the soul's evolution, its imagery and its passionate invocation of the sun link it with the old warrior-cult of Mithras; and while the leopards, elephants, drunkards and maenads seem at first more of Dionysos, the elegance and elegaic elements also link the work with the Greek Apollo, and the discipline of an exact and exacting verse.

Essential to an understanding of the twentieth century vision - and also to an understanding of what made so many of us passionately feminist.

5 out of 5 stars No hope No despair.......2000-12-06

A long, long time ago, I read this book and it changed the way I read literature. Kazantzakis' book goes beyond writing - it is a vivid exploration of the flame that consumes man. To go back to reading the frivolous so-called literature of today almost seems pointless. I am just thankful that Kazantzakis left us with such a rich body of work to read. The libraries were full of his books twenty years ago, but today I rarely find them on any shelf. To those of us who were lucky enough to discover him early, we know that he is the best kept secret of the twentieth century.

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-07-07

I'm a new student to Greek, my boyfriend is from Athens and is teaching me. I got this book to help me with grammar and vocabulary, but it's turning out to be a terrible book. The dialogues in the book make no sense at all. Everyone in the book is from somewhere other than Greece, so you are constantly learning how to say things like "I am from Paris. Do you speak Italian?". It just makes no sense. The layout of the book is also not very good. I've done other self-taught language courses and this is by the far the worst I've ever used. I'm now searching for a new book to replace this one. Don't buy it!

I was hoping this book/CD would help me learn some Greek for my upcoming vacation but it is more of a grammar/indepth course than a casual one. It's probably very useful if you want to REALLY know all about the Greek language but not if you just want to learn a few useful words as a tourist.

4 out of 5 stars Who woulda thunk it? It works!.......2007-10-08

Okay, some background on me. I am a native English speaker and have taken language classes before. 2years of Spanish in High School and 4 semesters of German in college. In both cases I got to the point where I could basically pick out parts of convsersations and had a decent vocabulary, but still had difficulty working in the languages are real-time speed.

I found the Greek I CD actually did work. I picked it up fairly quickly, and still remember almost all of it about 8 months after the last time I listened to any of the CDs. It really does stick using this method! Also, It really helped me be able to speak and hear Greek at real speeds and funcion well enough. I went to Greece last April and stayed with my wife's family there and was able to interact reasonably well despite a very limited vocabulary (that criticism is true of this series). The locals were duly impressed by my Greek once I explained that I had only started attempting to learn it about 2 months prior. They may have been humoring me, but I did manage a few entire conversations with native Greeks who didn't speak English. They have level 2&3 CDs for other languages, but don't seem eager to release it for Greek. Hope they do before my next trip. I have set the bar pretty high for next time.

One warning, these CDs had one uhh minor flaw that almost got me into big trouble. They claim the Greek word for Gas is Ben-zee-nee. Uh sort of. Technically that means DIESEL gasoline. Thank heavens my wife's uncle was at the gas station to correct me when I was demanding the attendant put diesel into my rental Honda(which was decidedly not a diesel engine). Regular gas is in fact much easier to remember "Gaz-o-lee-nee"

One other thing. As previous reviews have noted, about 85% of the people I met in Greece in tourist areas spoke English pretty well. That number dropped to about 15% in less touristy spots like Tripoli.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to learning a difficult language.......2007-03-08

My husband and I are both using these audio CD's to prepare for an upcoming trip to Greece, and we have each been very pleased with our progress with the language. We feel like the practice we are gaining from Pimsleur's Greek I will really help us have a background for being able to communicate our basic needs & feelings. We both feel very comfortable with the words & phrases we have learned from the CD's, as compared to trying to sound things out on our own from a textbook. The method used on the CD's takes the student past straight memorization and into further comprehension of the language's basic structure. My husband has spent time in Greece over the years, and he is so excited to return and show his Greek relatives his new skills!

4 out of 5 stars Not enough of a great thing.......2006-07-06

Having tried to study Greek on and off for years, I found that my reading ability was far greater than my speaking and listening ability. I would have to think too long to construct simple sentences, and had a hard time getting the grammar to work in my brain.

This method is phemonenal - it has greatly improved my understanding of the spoken word in Greek. I truly believe that no teaching resource compares. This method is the best.

A huge advantage is that I can study while driving, I don't have to block out time in my schedule to sit down with a book. Also, even tho I am a visual learner in most subjects, language is primarily spoken and I have come to the conclusion (during this course) that it is best learned when primarily heard and spoken rather than read. Additionally, I don't have to tire a tutor with repetition - I can just replay parts I have trouble with.

However, this course is simply not long enough - and leaves out several very important things. For instance, it gives almost no instruction in the second person familiar (informal you), no instruction in the genetive case (used for possessives), and no instruction in conjugating the rather large percentage of verbs that end in "omai" (transliterated, of course).

Greek is a complex language, and the number of hours of instruction needed to get to a "Level 1" competence is simply more than say, French or Spanish, therefore the publisher should make the course at least 40 or 50 hours long, instead of their usual 30.

Having said that, I enthusiastically recommend this course - it's not perfect, but as far as I know it is the best thing available - anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars this is the best course for a beginner.......2005-06-15

I believe that Pimsleur Greek I is the very best course for the complete beginner. I listened to the CDs for 1-2 hours per day for 3 months before traveling to Greece. When I arrived, several educated Greeks told me that my Greek was perfect. It wasn't, but I had learned many useful phrases from the Pimsleur course. Other audio courses that I have tried progressed too quickly.

There is no Pimsleur Greek II, so I recommend the Rosetta Stone course for your second course. It will help you to build vocabulary quickly and it does so entirely in Greek. There is no English instruction, which I think is a great technique.

5 out of 5 stars I'm very happy with my progress.......2005-06-13

I'm using the CD version. And I am making progress. I'm half way through the tapes. I find I learn best sitting quietly in a dark room with no distractions. When I go to bed I think about the words I've learned and fall asleep. I sleep better than I have in years, because I'm not thinking about problems.
Thats a side benefit I did not expect. It's so much fun to learn a new language!

Book Description

This book is intended primarily for learners who are beginning the study of the Greek Testament either without any previous acquaintance with the Greek language or with an acquaintance so imperfect that a renewed course of elementary instruction is needed. This revision, over seventy-five years since the first edition was published, retains much of the character and organization of the first edition while accommodating readers today who lack an understanding of Latin and grammar necessary for fully comprehending the original edition. For an introduction to the Greek Testament.

4 out of 5 stars I love learning Greek with Machen.......2007-09-13

I am pleased with the book. Machen provides excercises which are incredibly helpful in learning Greek. Each lesson is broken up effectively making it easy to follow. However, I found it necessary to receive instruction from a teacher along with each lesson.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one. Get it........2007-06-22

I started Greek with this book and went on to major in Greek. Machen's systematic presentation of grammar is as clear and approachable as you'd want it to be. I've been away from Greek for decades and after spending my career teaching Latin, I've returned to this little book and found it invigorating as I relearn what I once knew so well. I own other Greek grammars, but Machen's is really all I need. If you buy this--and I highly recommend it--get Thompson's workbook too. As a combination they can't be beat. Thompson, by the way, provides excellent additional review and practice material that makes a difficult language more accessible.

5 out of 5 stars New Testament made Easy.......2006-08-31

This is a great textbook for anyone who has never studied Greek and needs to have an understanding of the languages for New Testament studies. The chapters are short and easy to understand and the exercises are well paced.

4 out of 5 stars a true classic.......2006-08-02

I am partial to Machen because I first learned Greek with his book, but the more I use this text to teach Greek to others, the more impressed I become. The genius is the organization and the exercises. No grammar does a better job of systematically leading one through Greek and the exercises are wonderful at reenforcing the vocabulary and paradigms. This book is great for reviewing or refreshing Greek and is perfect for teaching children, again because of the exercises.
Machen's writing style is succinct if not eliptical, and this is the polar opposite to Mounce's user-friendly, wordy text, but its nice that it is small and you don't need a separate workbook. I would recommend that you buy both Machen and Mounce. The only reason I give it four stars is that no grammar is perfect and you really need to work through several. Machen is also to be honored for defending the faith against liberalism and he belongs in every Greco-phile's library.

5 out of 5 stars Agreement!.......2006-03-04

I have to voice agreement with those who praise this as the best introduction but I wonder how much of our love for the book is because it has sat on our desks for so many years and along with our Liddell and Scott is the first place we go to check something!

Book Description

This abridgement of the world's most authoritative dictionary of ancient Greek is intended chiefly for use in schools. To this end, some of the more specialised words relating to medicine and science have been excluded, whilst words from works of particular relevance to school usage have been retained, and the number of irregular verb tenses expanded.

3 out of 5 stars Clarendon Press of China.......2007-05-29

This review specifically refers to the "Big Liddle", ninth edition with revised supplement and inclusive of Linear B references.

Indispensible as it is, I was disappointed. Even this gigantuan work is poor on proper names. But my major gripe was that it was poorly made. As noted by another reviewer, in places the printing was faded although it was certainly still legible. But the paper was poorly cut. The pages stuck together at the edges - I imagine because a blunt (or insufficently sharp) blade was used to cut the pages. Each page had to be separated by hand or flicking the pages. The paper is sliver thin, and some of it was creased in the binding - excruciatingly poor quality for a $160 book. On reviewing the front, I noted that it was printed and bound in China - a country (like the USA) noted for its poor quality workmanship and third-world quality control. This would be fine if the cost savings were passed on to the buyer, but at $160 I can tell you that I expect more. How the Oxford Clarendon Press can put its name on such quality I don't know. My Middle Liddell was printed and bound in Spain by a European printer and the quality is superb.

It is a nonsense that it couldn't be reset. It would be a few summers work for a software engineer and a class of Classics students using purpose-written character recognition software and direct-to-press digital printing technology.

This would still get five stars if it weren't for the poor quality of the manufacture.

5 out of 5 stars No problems with the font readibility in mine........2007-04-15

I haven't gotten a chance to really delve into the book yet. I just got it six hours ago, but from leafing through I can tell that readibility is not an issue. The font is some of the clearest I have seen on any book. Perhaps I have a more recent printing, but I noticed quite a few people seem to knock it for that. Just wanted to say that you can buy with confidence. From bavorite anyway.

5 out of 5 stars oatmeal for the linguistic lobe.......2007-01-06

'LSJ', as this good friend of a book is called by specialists of ancient Greek language and linguistics, is a staple.

You wouldn't skip breakfast before heading to work. You wouldn't wear dress shoes without socks. You wouldn't fail to own a well-worn copy of this classic Greek-English lexicon if your work immerses you in ancient Greek.

Regularly updated since its initial publication in 1843, LSJ makes you wonder what people did before, well, LSJ. This Oxford University Press publication still sports an archaic but crystal clear typeface. Each entry has at least one English definition but often many more, Greek contexts, and citations from the literature in which the word is found.

As with any classic, critics abound. LSJ, it is alleged, is too dependent on debunked etymology, too slanted towards a certain sector of the literature, too passé in its linguistics, etc.

No matter. We all still slide it regulary from its honored place on a nearby shelf for helpful and usually appreciated consultation.

A dear old friend, LSJ. What ever did people *do*?

4 out of 5 stars As advertised.......2006-08-14

As a Bible student that is studying the Greek language I was directed to Liddell and Scott by a Greek language instructor. It is been very helpful with translating words in the New Testament English to Greek. It is far superior to the information available in the Strong's concordance.

5 out of 5 stars This dictionary is a life saver!.......2006-02-17

I bought this Ancient Greek Lexicon in order to help me translate a play by Menander for my senior thesis. Very seldomly am I unable to find the words I'm looking for. Many of the obscure forms of the verbs are listed and refer the reader back to the main entry. I highly recommend this item.

Book Description

This elementary Latin course for 7-10 year olds combines a basic introduction to the Latin language with material on the history and culture of Roman Britain. Highly illustrated, the book contains a mixture of stories and myths, grammar explanations and exercises, and background cultural information. Pupils are drawn into the material as they read about the lives of a family living in a community at Vindolanda; the adventures of the children and the family cat and mouse provide interest throughout. As well as offering a lively introduction to Latin and classical studies, Minimus also has cross-curricular relevance. The material on the community at Vindolanda can be used to supplement studies of the Romans at KS2. The grammatical content helps to develop language awareness, and provides a solid foundation from which learners can progress to further English or foreign language studies. The Teacher's Resource Book provides support, particularly for non-Classicists. It includes teaching guidelines, English translations of the Latin passages, and additional background information, plus photocopiable worksheets.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A little frustrating.......2007-09-23

We do not "homeschool" but I wanted to use this book to teach my daughter Latin as a supplement to what she's learning in school. So far I have found it to be frustrating. Mostly because all the words are not defined. I have been having her translate the cartoons but she is not able to do it completely because of the lack of definitions. It would also be helpful to have a comprehensive glossary at the end. I have a Latin dictionary but it's not terribly helpful. For instance, they introduce "est" but none of the tenses. So along comes "erit" and I'm not sure how they're supposed to know that that is the future tense and means "is going to be"? And "erit" is not in the Latin dictionary. I am now going to have to sit down and write up a spreadsheet with definitions of all the words.

The mouse is cute and I like the addition of Roman culture and history.

5 out of 5 stars Good for schools and homeschools.......2007-08-23

This is an excellent alternative to Prima Latina and Latina Christiana. It is engaging and fun without being gimmicky. I have taught Latin using a variety of texts for over 10 years-- this is the perfect textbook for elementary school students or homeschoolers looking for a solid introduction to Latin language and ancient culture. This book is also perfect for students studying the ancient Mediterranean (perhaps using Story of the World or another such text). It has much useful and fascinating information on daily life in the ancient world.

The teacher's manual that accompanies this book is fraught with ideas for projects and classroom activities.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource - BUT you must have the audio for pronunciation (more).......2007-07-04

This is very entertaining, very versatile -- there are so many activities to be used for reinforcement that one truly will not be able to do them all. Even though I had Latin in High School, I had to purchase the audio CD - I found it to be the missing component to the kids' enjoying their lessons thoroughly. The Audio is an enormous help -- easy to understand and a practical learning aid. I also used photos off the internet of present day Vindolanda which gaves the kids an excellent perspective of the area about which they are learning. Because of the great versatility of the series and the many ways to branch out and make the lessons interesting, relevant AND still have your students learn Latin, I would definitely recommend this series AND the audio component.

4 out of 5 stars Long live Minimus.......2007-05-14

This book is a very entertaining way to introduce basic latin for young and inquisitive minds. I liked the humerous stories coupled with the classic mythology.

Now I look for latin words in everyday life with a lot more awareness than before. Long live minimus!

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2007-02-17

My husband reads this book to our toddler and both enjoy the simple words and concepts. It's perfect for little ones or beginners.

Book Description

Greek Today presents an up-to-date communicative approach for students of Modern Greek. Aimed at the introductory to intermediate levels, it is a completely revised and expanded edition of the popular Demotic Greek I. Presenting material that relates to a wide range of cultural interests, the textbook offers twelve lessons with a total of sixty grammar points, all conveyed through dialogues that present the realities experienced by young people and adults in contemporary Greece. Lessons are supplemented by songs, poems, realia, images, and cultural texts. A large number of cartoons by Greece's eminent artist Kostas Mitropoulos provide a running commentary on modern Greek culture and its relation to Europe and the ancient Greek past.

Employing a vocabulary of more than 2,000 words and introducing students to the most current Greek idioms, Greek Today also includes etymological notes on the evolution of the Greek language and the Greek roots of many English words.

Beautifully illustrated, Greek Today is accompanied by a CD that contains recordings of the basic texts of each lesson, performed by Greek actors.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR SELF STUDY.......2007-06-22

Learning modern Greek can be a bit of a daunting task.
Specially if you have some knowledges of classical Greek . The modern pronunciation, the iotacism, words that looks alike but do mean something different.. well, it can be a bit scary.

Now, I must say that "Greek Today" is a REALLY GOOD self study textbook. The main book is quite thick and is in a A4 format. It comes along with a workbook that I definitely recommend as it gives great exercises and a great way to make sure you know your vocabulary. All the explanations are in English, and also, the course comes with 2 CD roms, 1 for Mac, one for Windows, with recordings of the dialogue by Greek actors.

Studying that course is pleasant, an easy task and honestly, it makes modern Greek a Doodle to learn compared to its classical sister. NO ghastly hard conjugations, reduced declensions.. what a joy. Greek Today gives you all the pleasure of learning a great and lovely language without the headaches. The website also gives you extra material to study and loads of texts, videos andis very user friendly.
I have tried other textbooks, and THIS one is by far my favorite.

If you re serious about learning modern Greek.. Go for it . Buy that course, (I know it is an investment but you deserve quality ).
Get yourself a cup of agnos ellinikos kafes (real greek style coffee) and start studying.. You won t regret it , I can assure you that

5 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2007-05-07

Nicely published, large textbook, with clear layout and clear font. The accompanying CD is well produced also, although it seems to lack a cross-index to the textbook. It is obviously intended for classroom use, under the guidance of a teacher. It can also be used for self-study, perhaps in tandem with " A Manual of Modern Greek" by Anne Farmakides, an older but excellent book which I found extremely helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A good start.......2007-01-17

This I find to be a good start on learning Greek. Learning any language is going to require effort but having the various forms of media may ease it some. Go to their website which is also referred to in the book for additional material in learning this wonderful language.

5 out of 5 stars GREEK TODAY: A COURSE IN THE MODERN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.......2007-01-11

This is an excellent, comprehensive work on modern Greek language and culture. However, it is not ideally suited for self-tuition and needs back-up from a teacher. It is also essential to use the workbook alongside it in order to reinforce each aspect of the grammar covered. In order to make it more suited to self-tuition it would need to have a key to the exercises and a Greek/English glossary at the end of each chapter. Finally, I think that each chapter could have been divided up into smaller units in order to aid motivation. So much grammar and vocabulary is included in each chapter that it can be of-putting.

5 out of 5 stars This is a good textbook........2007-01-03

It is accessible for English-speaking students and well-rounded in content.
