In Pickles to Pittsburgh, the Barretts' sequel to the delightfully funny, bestselling Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, we check back in with Kate and Henry as they eagerly await Grandpa's return from an unusual vacation. Kate dreams about a postcard Grandpa has sent, and the story begins.
Kate and Henry pilot a plane, landing on a runway of crisp bacon strips next to a field of giant broccoli stalks and oversized hamburgers. Passing through an orange-juice rain, they approach the town of Chewandswallow, which "used to be a very ordinary town, except that instead of weather, food rained down from the sky for breakfast, lunch, and dinner." Times have changed in Chewandswallow, and readers will love finding out how storms of gigantic food threatened normal life until eventually the Falling Food Company was created, sending food to hungry people around the world. Ron Barrett's comical, detailed ink-and-watercolor illustrations and the lively story make this a satisfying sequel to a delicious classic. Pickles to Pittsburgh is an excellent bedtime book--just keep a snack handy! (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
In this charming sequel to the classic Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Kate and Henry eagerly await Grandpa's return from a vacation that his postcard says has been one of the best and most unusual ever. Thinking about that postcard Kate drifts off to sleep that night and...
"With Henry as my co-pilot..." she visits the strange land of Chewandswallow -- a land characterized by massive amounts of food, immense carrots, leafy jungles of lettuce, and tuna fish sandwiches so gigantic they have to be moved by helicopter. What the people of Chewandswallow are doing with all that food is most intriguing of all. Fans of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs will applaud this return trip with its underlying message of generosity and a world community.

Eh..........2007-07-04
I grew up loving the prequel Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, so I bought this book a while back to complete the collection. Upon reading it however, I was quite dissapointed...it is okay as a children's book, but as a sequel it wasn't up to par with the original. I felt that this book lacked the charm that the original had, though the message about sharing is nice I guess. All in all if you're going to buy the book based on the original, expect to be dissapointed...but if you're buying it for a kid's collection it's alright.
One of my FAVORITES!.......2007-01-04
This is one of the BEST kids' books around. A fabulous sequel to "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs", this is just one of those fun books to share wtih your kids, and a must-have on the shelf, even if your kids are too old to apprecite it - everyone needs a little silliness now and again!
Pickles is the pits.......2007-01-03
This is a terrible book. It doesn't even compare to the first. My husband and I both hate reading it.
Nice illustrations, weak story.......2006-03-20
We (kids and parents) loved Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but no one was really impressed with the story. We spend more time just checking out the neat illustrations than reading the text.
Nice sequal to an AMAZING book.......2006-02-25
YOu must own Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs...please go buy that...then if you love that, you can get this book - which is a really nice sequal..
recommended.

A New Way of Thinking About Food and Fragrance
Turn a brilliant natural perfumer loose in a chef's kitchen and you get vanilla perfume, saffron, ginger, and blood orange bath salts, and a cucumber mist. Turn a brilliant chef loose in a perfumer's pantry and you get rose-infused steamed bass, peach-jasmine sorbet, and scores of other startlingly original recipes using floral and herbal aromas.
Aroma permeates every cuisine, from ancient to modern, in every culture and at every level, but what this pioneering cookbook, by chef Daniel Patterson and perfumer Mandy Aftel, makes evident is that aroma, not taste, is our primary experience of food. Without aroma there is no flavor. By focusing on aroma, we intensify all aspects of food, and immeasurably enhance the experience of cooking and eating.
While many cookbooks include some discussion of the use of aromatics in cooking, none concentrates on this essential link, where a few drops of a fragrant essence can make commonplace dishes memorable and good dishes great. Both the food recipes and the fragrance recipes in
Aroma are powerfully alluring, whether it's a coffee cologne or an orange flower custard. Cumin vinaigrettes and lemon verbena mists waft off the page. Lavender makes a grilled steak sizzle while white ruffle makes for a haunting perfume.
Explicit information on ingredients, equipment, and terms and techniques complements one fragrance recipe and three food recipes for nearly thirty ingredients—lime, mint, green tea, black pepper, vanilla, and ginger, among others. This seminal work will open your senses to the aromatic, even sensual, dimension of food and fragrance.

Enticing.......2005-11-13
A successful collaberation between a master natural perfumer and a master chef, with luscious results! The photographs are gorgeous---the formulas unique. Attractive enough for a coffee table, this book will be frequently used and treasured. Well worth seeking out for a present for someone special!

With a special focus on 27 concentrated aromas.......2004-11-11
Mandy Aftel is the owner of Aftelier Perfumes and custom designs one-of-a-kind blends for individuals and formulates fragrances for private labels. Daniel Patterson is a professional chef and the owner of Frisson in San Francisco. In Aroma: The Magic Of Essential Oils In Food & Fragrance, Aftel and Patterson effectively collaborate to reveal how aromatics play a critically important role in the perception of flavor in cooking. With a special focus on 27 concentrated aromas, recipes are crafted around the fragrant quality of a single ingredient providing such illustrative examples as enhancing a white peach sorbet jasmine, or augmenting asparagus soup a mint-infusion. Kitchen cooks are shown how to incorporate concentrated oils in their homemade dishes such as adding a bit of oil drizzled into the dressing to invigorate a salad, or sprinkling several drops into a batter to add an additional note to a dessert. The combination of basic information with aromatically enhanced recipes makes Aroma a highly recommended addition to any personal or professional cookbook collection.
Groundbreaking Work.......2004-08-05
At last, someone has combined my two loves- food and natural essences.I have been interested in combining essential oils and food for some time, and this book is full of terrific creative ideas for doing just that. And as a dabbler in homemade body care products, I love the pairing of the food receipes with the body care recipes.
The food recipes are well within the skill level of the average cook. Some of the ingredients are a bit exotic and might be hard to find for some readers (e.g. shiso and saffron absolute- I finally found the saffron absolute at Liberty Natural). Otherwise most of the ingredients are readily available at your basic supermarket. The essences themselves can be ordered at a number of sites on the internet.
Chef Patterson's recipes are creative and provacative combinations that "go outside the box". Seared Scallops With Tarragon Sabayon combines tarragon essential oil with a sabayon sauce normally associated with desserts, but modified here to work in a savory dish. Wild Salmon With Marinated Cucumbers utilizes a cucumber hydrosol in the vinaigrette and the unusual technique of slow-cooking the salmon so that it is completely cooked through yet moist and delicate.
The "In the Everyday Kitchen" vignettes in each chapter offer quick and simple suggestions for using the essences in food. For example, "Mix a little lime essential oil with lime juice, simple syrup...and sparkling mineral water..." The lime EO adds a kick to the drink that it wouldn't have with lime juice alone.
Ms. Aftel's fragrances and body care recipes are glorious and most are relatively simple to do. The novice will need a little practice handling some of the more viscous essences, such as peru balsam and labdanum absolute in the Jasmine Liquid Perfume. I was quite surprised and delighted that Ms. Aftel chose to share with us the recipes for some of her own perfumes that she sells on her website and in retail stores. Parfum de Maroc and Cepes and Tuberose are two favorites. It is exceptionally generous considering that most perfumers keep their formulations under lock and key for obvious reasons.
I also want to add that the photography and food styling in this book is mouth-watering and drop-dead gorgeous. I almost wanted to eat the book! (Almost.)
Three cheers for Mandy Aftel, Daniel Patterson, and their creative team for giving us this beautiful work!

We're Going to Have Our Cake...and Be Eaten, Too!.......2007-07-11
"Our teacher, Ms. Frizzle, is always surprising us. So on her birthday, we decided to surprise her. We planned a big party. We had balloons, streamers, confetti, and even noisemakers. 'We thought of everything,', said Carolos. But Arnold wasn't so sure. 'Something's missing', he said." -- From the book
In case you're not familiar with Scholastic series of Magic School Bus books, they are books which are based on the animated TV series--which are, incindentally, based on the ORIGINAL books written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. (Whew!)
In The Magic School Bus Gets Baked in a Cake, Ms. Frizzle takes her class to a bakery for a chemistry field trip. According to Ms. Frizzle, a bakery is a small chemical factory.
The class gets the idea to distract Ms. Frizzle by sending her to a nearby auto parts store to fix the bus. Meanwhile, they've been shrunken to the size of a moth--but make the attempt to bake a chocolate cake for Ms. Frizzle's surprise birthday party!
The kids learn about measuring and chemical reactions, including to the old vinegar + baking soda = gas experiment (which actually contributes to them escaping getting baked into the cake!).
As always, there are cheesy jokes throughout (e.g. "We've got flour power" and "This batter is taking a real beating"), but it's a great introduction to "kitchen chemistry"--and how mixing ingredients and adding heat (baking) are, in fact, chemical reactions.
I use the Magic School Bus books, videos and DVDs to supplement science class (I homeschool), and they never disappoint with their down-to-Earth approach to science concepts.
'The Magic School Bus Gets Baked' is questionable.......2005-01-07
I don't think children's books should glorify these sorts of "trips". But the colors are vivid and I think most of the unsuitable references will go over the heads of its younger readers.
MAgic school bus "cake".......2004-02-04
I liked this book, it was interrasting and it had made me read more and omre till i got through it all. I like the part when the shrunk and the guy was chaseing them and the flew into the cake and went into the oven i didn't think there would make it out.
Kitchen Chemistry Fizzes.......2001-06-14
When their inimitable school bus goes on the fritz (or should I say, "frizz"?,) the students get worried: this is one field trip they don`t want to miss. They`re trying to give their unique teacher a surprise birthday party and need to get to the bakery for the cake. When they finally reach their destination, the unstable bus suddenly shrinks, with everyone in it, to the size of a moth. They dodge the baker`s fly swatter and Ms Frizzle while using kitchen chemistry to get the job done. My boys and I miss the volume of information and mini "reports" of the original series, but they still learn and have fun at the same time. They have a new respect for cooking, as edible chemistry. And the baking soda experiment at the back of the book is a rainy day standby in our household: we love the fizz from the Frizz!
I liked it........1997-11-10
I liked it because the baker thought the magic school bus was a moth.

Book Description
In The Magic of Chia, authority James F. Scheer details the seed's abundant nutrients: calcium, amylose (a slow-burning starch helpful for hypoglycemics), a vast array of vitamins and minerals, and an unusually good ratio of omega-3 oil to omega-6 oil. The book reintroduces this wonder food to the modern palate, with numerous tested recipes for using chia to upgrade the nutritional value of hamburgers, soups, salads, breads, fruit drinks, and much more. Included is the never before told story about the twenty-year program to domesticate the wild chia and, for the first time in modern history, grow it in large enough quantities to supply the U.S. and world markets.

This book pays its respects to the many people who have been trying to make Chia seed a viable crop and educate others on its incredible health benefits. Although a bit simple in its approach, it is an up-to-date resource for those just learning about the magic of the chia seed and its future potential for changing the health of millions. Read it, apply it, and pass it on!

The Magic School Bus Strikes Again.......2000-04-20
"The Magic School Bus" series is a gift for parents and techers who want to interest younger readers in science without pain.
The bright colourful illustrations catch the imaginations of younger readers and complex concepts are brought across simply but accurately. Readers identify with Arnold and the other children. They enthusiastically take part in the discussion as if they were right inside the covers of the book.
(My son is sure he can out-reason Dorothy-Ann, and this stimulates him to work out what happens next.)
The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten is no exception. Concepts of food chains are brought across simply but clearly and readers are led to make deductions based on previous information.
Excellent stuff! My son wants the next issue now!

There are very few authors I trust. This book is definitely one to keep. I wish I could have met him. Blessed Be
Geared towards vegetarians.......2006-10-12
Just so you know- this book is a good book. I found his vast knowledge base a great resource, there were many things about food that I did not know- many items of trivia that come up while reading that impressed me, or were new to me. What made me give it 4 not 5 stars is the fact that the book barely mentions the magical relationships with meats/poultry. I did not gather this would be true by looking at the title. You need to be aware that this book is geared towards vegetarian eating. Go and look at the table of contents if available to you here. You will find that there are no chapters on meat/poultry.
I thought this unfair. Or, to say the least a little bit misleading. You can't in my opinion be a true encyclopedia of something unless you're going to include it all- right? If you are going to have an entire chapter on fish, why stop there? He says himself in the book that it was a decided thing, to avoid talking about meats and he tells why. But you would not have known this unless you'd borrowed this from a friend, or I told you now- I think that they should have encorporated the words VEGETARIAN into the title so we would automatically know. Or at least on the back cover, mention something about this.
If I had to choose between this book, and Patricia Telesco's A Kitchen Witch's Cookbook- I'd go for Patricia's, not just because there are TONS more recipes, but also because she includes ALL aspects of the human palate today. I think this book is a GREAT book for vegetarians interested in the magickal correlation of the foods they normally eat (fish/veg/fruit/grain/dairy/sweets). I just wanted to tell everyone to check out the table of contents and decide if this one is for you- or if you need more info on other foods.
Cunning Enc. Wicca Kitchen.......2005-09-29
I was replacing, my first copy decided to go live with someone else. I find this an excellent for someone with little experience with herbs and their uses and some one who is a novice in the kitchen.
I like having it to use as a resource so I can double check what I'm doing, as I sometimes cannot remember as well as I use to.
Book Description
Thelonius Monster once swallowed a fly, and decided that flies would taste grand in a pie. That silly guy!
Judy Sierra’s funny read-aloud romp presents a monster that children will love as he makes a goo-filled crust, lures hundreds and thousands of succulent flies into it, and invites his “disgusting-ist” friends and relations to a gala fly-pie party. “How it glistens! And listen—it hums!” shout the ravenous monsters. But just as his guests are about to dig in—the pie flies off. “Bye, bye, fly pie.”
Judy Sierra’s story in rhyme begs to be read aloud during Halloween season or any season, and Edward Koren’s signature hairy monsters capture all the humor of this deliciously gross tale.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2006-09-02
I love reading this book to my kids, ages 6 and 8. I enjoy the story as much as they do. It is a simple story, easy and very enjoyable to read. I think the words are clever and have a nice flow to them, and the story is really cute.
Earth below us, drifting falling.......2006-05-18
The cartoonists of the New Yorker have never been able to resist the siren song of the world of children's book illustration. Some of them, particularly Harry Bliss, have made the transition without so much as a hiccup. And of course it goes the other way around too. William Steig for years drew odd and bizarre little pieces for the mag when he wasn't penning children's classics. Edward Koren is another matter altogether. I've always loved his furry, hairy, wide-eyed people/monsters/birds/etc. Till now only book to his name was his own, "Very Hairy Harry". Now he's been paired with Judy Sierra of, "Wild About Books" fame. The result is, "Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie" with black and white pen and inks by Koren. It's not the most original of books and the rhymes leave something to be desired, but it remains amusing enough to satisfy those parents who already like the illustrator or the author and want something droll for the nursery.
Written in rhyme the story tells the tale of Thelonius Monster (no relation to Mr. Monk) who realizes one day that flies are delicious. So delicious, in fact, that he decides to bake hundreds and thousands of them into a pie. To do so Thelonius makes a crust with an extra-sticky filling, then lures his flies from every conceivable (slash disgusting) place to stick to his pie. That done, the guest-monsters arrive and look forward to a delicious repast. All seems to be going when until all of a sudden the pie lifts off of the ground thanks to the flapping wings of the flies. It takes off, the crust falls to the ground, and the flies are free. You might think that old Thelonius would be disheartened by this development, but his guests love the taste of the now fallen crust and tell him, "You're a fabulous cook! You're a wonderful guy!". Happy ending for all.
What Sierra has done here is provide us with an alternative to the old I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie story. Sierra's chorus even offers the little after-rhymes that mimic the "perhaps she'll die" portion of the original song. Don't try to sing this book to the "Old Lady" tunes, though. Sierra's lines scan but sometimes shoot off into entirely different directions, making them impossible to sing. I give extra points to Sierra for the use of the word, "galumphing", by the way, since it's such an amusing little word. The story is fine too. It's not extraordinary. It won't grab you by the collar and wake you up. It's just nice. People who like it will like it and people who are bored with it will be bored.
Koren does some lovely things with this story. Eschewing any color except for the green of the flies' wings, the book is primarily drawn in black ink. The flies, for their part, have small human faces, which makes their eventual escape that much more pleasant. There is a rather manure-laden sequence in which Thelonius locates four different animals, each of whom has recently... um... produced some natural fertilizer (if you know what I mean). The flies congregate and the monster is able to capture them. Actually, it took me four or five readings of the book before I realized what this two-page spread was really about. Undoubtedly some parents will have a greater dislike of such a sequence in a picture book than others. Koren has certainly made Sierra's words make sense, but the amount of manure verges on the excessive. I was still fond of the book, though. I liked the signs held up at the end by the other monsters (and some flies) in Thelonius's honor. The sign, "Marry Me, Thelonius" was one of my favorites.
"Sky-High Fly Pie" is by no means meant to be confused with, "The High Rise Glorious Skittle Skat Roarious Sky Pie Angel Food Cake", though you could be forgiven for doing so. It is a fine book and will garner some fans. Nice all around.

Bring Friends.......2006-08-31
The standard Cake Box is full of unimaginative sin. Active ingredients: Air and sweetness. (Like a politician on election eve?) With the help of this book and the zany ingredients suggested, your Cake Mix becomes something else entirely.
You will need a friend or two. The whimsical nature of these "recipes" brings a touch of hilarity to the kitchen that is best shared. Rolling around the floor in fits of laughter by your self is just not proper. You will also need a friend to help you eat the resulting behemoth. 3 bananas, after all, do add a certain bulk to the product.
This is a fantastically fun kitchen fantasy. Just don't get carried away. You will need some place besides your own tummy to tuck these treats.

Book Description
It's been a couple of weeks since Katie turned into the class hamster, and she's beginning to hope that maybe her transforming days are through. But more excitement lies ahead for Katie as she becomes Lucille, the cafeteria lunch lady! Unfortunately, the principal isn't too happy with a lunch lady who throws egg salad and starts food fights. . . so it's up to Katie (back in her own body) and her classmates to save the day.
Illustrated by John & Wendy.

Out to lunch, no out to read!.......2006-12-28
This is an excellent book. I loved it. It explains the problem that a third grade girl faces-a magic wind that turns her into others, and then back into herself. In this book, Katie is fed up with the gross school lunches. When the magic wind turns her into the lunch lady, she finds herself in the middle of a food fight. Then, the principal, Mr. Kane, fires her. When Katie turns back into herself, she knows that she and her friends must do something to help the lunch lady, but what. Read this excelling book to find out. It's highly recommended by me. So what are you waiting for, go on and read it. Oh, and it contains no spoilers whatsoever. Also, look for a book called DANA IN THE 7TH GRADE. I heard from a friend that it's a new book that's coming out. It's supposed to be execellent. Out To Lunch is an fantastic book, and I highly encourage you to read it. Trust me, you will not want to put it sown once you start to read it. Good luck finding it, I bet all the copies are already taken.
