Book Description

Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick….

Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.

The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.

It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.

With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.

1 out of 5 stars Awful!.......2007-09-29

This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies. I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own. I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)

1 out of 5 stars Not good for dairy or eggs........2007-08-02

I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first. Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg. It is so bad it is almost funny. Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation: omit eggs. Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe. I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are: Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh. O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice: Omit Nuts.

2 out of 5 stars Best for wheat free.......2007-06-22

Luckily I read the reviews here first and checked out this book at my library before buying it. If your child has multiple allergens, I suggest you do the same. If you have relied on processed foods until now, this book may be helpful and her tone is certainly enthusiastic. However, if you're experienced in the kitchen, this book is a big waste of time and money. Just get out your Joy of Cooking and omit whatever your child is allergic too and you'll have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Most-used cookbook I own.......2007-05-15

Since learning of my 6 year old's allergies a year ago, I have spent hours and hours trying to make "normal" food for him. I wish I would have tried this one first - it would have saved me a lot of time and money. The chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potato pizza, vanilla wafers, are among our favorites now. I highly recommend the book for anyone with kids. An extra plus is that the ingredients were already in my kitchen (white rice flour is common - easy to find, not as expensive as many specialty flours). I made one special trip for vanilla powder to make several of the recipes, and it is so worth it. I LOVE THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-04-25

I was very disappointed in this cookbook. I should have done more reserach before I purchased it. Because nearly all of the recipes contain dairy and egg, I have avoided making anything for fear that by using substitutes, the recipe will not be the same. There are far better allergy cookbooks out there.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-09-16

I cook all the time for my family and need a cook book that is healthy, manageable, and delicious. This is it! This book has some of the best recipes with ingredients that can be found in your pantry, saving you a trip to the store. The recipes that I have made have been wonderful, full of flavor and spice. I would highly recommend this fast and friendly book. Tonight I am taking dinner straight from the freezer to my table thanks to Holly Clegg's Trim and Terrific Freezer Friendly Book!

3 out of 5 stars recipes taste very bland.......2007-09-09

I have tried over 7 different recipes and they all tasted very bland. I have had to modify them by adding additional spices or sauces. I am fanatical about cooking as healthy as possible, but not at the expense of taste.

2 out of 5 stars Missing pages.......2007-09-01

I have not used recipes in this book yet. When I was trying to look up what I wanted to make and several pages between 160 and 177 were missing, and of course the recipe I needed was in those pages. What can I do about that???

5 out of 5 stars cooking up a storm.......2007-04-25

After purchasing this book I marked several recipes that I wanted to try immedialty. (20 in all) Needless to say I a have been cooking up a storm. I keep calling my neighbor for tips on OAMC and I already know some different things to do next time for organization. I have been sampling what I have made before freezing and so far everything has been great!! My daughter really likes the Empanadas(we are going to make some carmel apple ones like Taco Bell) and for someone who doesn't like eggs she likes the mini muffing rancheros (I made hers w/o salsa) I was making the mixture for the italian pizza rolls and my son says "wow that really looks good) Some of the recipes I have divided into two meals. The soups I have divided into one large bag for a meal for four and then broke the rest down for lunch size portions. I was able to get two pizzas out of the bbq chicken pizza. I like this book so much I purchase two more to give to my two neighbors who already do OAMC. We have been talking about each of us making 5-6 meals each X 3 and swapping meals. If you are doing weight watchers this is a great book I got my points calculator out and started writing the points on the recipes, these meals are low in points!!

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive!.......2007-01-13

I've made about 10 recipes and all of them have been great and compliment my New Year's diet / calorie counting. My 9 year old even loved the spinach and brie dip. This from a girl who has a phobia of all vegetables! I love to cook and have a lot of cookbooks, but few have the number of receipes that are family-friendly, economical and easy to prepare. AND you can freeze everything. I take it out of the freezer the night before, leave in fridge all day, then come home and throw in over. 30 minutes later my family and I have a fantastic meal!

Product Description

Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify & Energize Your Life, Your Home & Your Planet, by Norma Lehmeier Hartie, is an indispensable reference book for anyone who cares about their health and well being and for the future of the planet. Hartie concisely covers a wide range of subjects and includes a comprehensive listing of advisory organizations, product and service resources. Part I of the book, Banish the Ugly from Your Life, is a blueprint for green, sustainable living. Discover how to replace toxic and unsustainable products from household cleaners to food (including recipes) to furniture to personal care products with safe, eco-friendly ones. Hartie is the tough but motivational Life Coach in her approach to cleaning, removing clutter and on organizing the home or office. Part II, Bring in the Beautiful to Create a Harmonious Environment and Self, includes a chapter on Earth-based spirituality and a fascinating look at the Four Elements (Earth, Fire, Air and Water) and the Medicine Wheel. The core of Hartie s philosophy blossoms in Chapter Seven, Applying Harmonious AdjustmentsTM: Using Feng Shui and Other Techniques for Powerful Results. Unlike other Feng Shui authors, Hartie has experience as a designer and her skills are apparent in this chapter and the following two. She has combined principles of Feng Shui, the Four Elements, color, energy, Vastu, and good design principles that create a unique and eclectic approach to home decorating. Finally, Hartie provides guidance on how to manifest personal or professional desires. In Part III, Putting the Pieces Together, Hartie skillfully integrates the many subjects of the book into a unified and cohesive whole. At its cover price of $19.95, Harmonious Environment is a value alone for the comprehensive green living product suppliers in the Resources section. What makes this book so truly ambitious, however, is what lies beneath the surface. In a sense, this book is only marginal

5 out of 5 stars Transform Your Home into a Peaceful Sanctuary.......2007-04-10

"The energy from flowers is so bright and strong that they can be put anywhere in the home and they will enhance your life." ~ pg. 217

Norma Lehmeier Hartie is a design consultant and Harmonious Adjustment practitioner who enjoys gardening and cooking. She created the practice of Harmonious Adjustments to give her clients the chance to reconnect with nature and to manifest their personal and professional dreams. Through her book she introduces ideas for detoxing and decluttering your home environment.

If you want a happier, healthier lifestyle that is more in harmony with nature, then Norma Lehmeier Hartie's book has a world of information to make this possible. She can help you:

Remove toxic products from your home and garage
Clean and organize your home
Buy environmentally friendly cleaning products
Organize your home for more peace and harmony
Find healthy personal care products
Grow plants that help to control pollution - A list of the Fifty Best Houseplants
Find the best choices in flooring
Figure out how to recycle larger items like a refrigerator
Cook more safely and use kitchen scraps for your garden
Formulate a plan to keep your house clean
Organize every room in the house
Decorate with Confidence

Reading through the list of harmful products gives you an idea of the ingredients to avoid in cleaners and how they can affect your health. For an antibacterial spray, the author suggests water and essential oils and for cleaning silver she also suggests more natural solutions like baking soda and vinegar. Using Borax and water is less dangerous than chlorine bleach fumes and you may want to try this in your shower. You may enjoy products by Seventh Generation.

Chapter three felt a little out of my personal range of expertise, although we know that thoughts can affect our environment and life and can move our life in a positive or negative direction. This chapter deals more with spiritual practices. Chapter 6 also delves into a deeper connection with nature, personality types and elemental powers. The list of Yin and Yang is helpful to create a balance of the two in your home. An entire chapter is also dedicated to plants, gemstones and crystals.

"If you are the average American woman, you expose yourself to over two hundred synthetic chemicals that are found in the products you use as you prepare yourself for the day. These products do not simply sit on your skin; approximately sixty percent of these ingredients get absorbed into your bloodstream." ~ pg. 91

Chapter four is especially informative and essential if you are trying to be healthier and want to find organic alternatives to products filled with synthetic chemicals. Why should you avoid petroleum and talc? Why is there lead in hair dye?

The section on an Eco-Friendly Kitchen is interesting and the chapter on natural and organic foods also gives ideas on how to save time in the kitchen. A few recipes are included:

Vegetarian Pasta Primavera
Fajitas
Risotto with Scallops or Shrimp
Lemon Rice
Grilled Vegetables

An extensive list of resources and a very handy index complete this well-researched and extremely helpful book. If you enjoy Feng Shui or decorating and organizing your home, there is a lot to enjoy and you may find the information in this book can also help with fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems.

5 out of 5 stars Detox Your Life.......2007-04-04

No matter what your goals are, this book has the starting point for you. Learn how to make your life less toxic and get a better relationship with Mother Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Declutter, paint and detoxify.......2007-04-02

Using the principles of Feng Shui, you can create a harmonious home environment with this book as a guide.

Author Lehmeier-Hartie has you choose colors, elements and design based on your birthday. If you suffer from problems feeling disorganized or headachey at home, it could be your home is not organized properly or the flow of energy is impeded.

The author extends this tranquility to finding the right job and the right mate. Whether or not it is the alignment of elements in the home, focusing on clearing clutter in your life can only have positive effects. A very pretty book.

5 out of 5 stars Life-changing ideas.......2007-02-02

Worried about what your family is being exposed to? Are you hoping to increase your wealth or find love this year? Trying to decide on the best color to paint your walls? If you answered "yes!" to any of these questions, then Harmonious Environment is a must read.

The goal of this book is to create positive energy both in your home and your life and to be kinder to the earth. Hertie is a design consultant, chef, gardener, and healer. She shares her professional and personal experiences with the readers, i.e., homemade earth-friendly cleaning products, tasty recipes for carnivores and vegetarians, etc. She recommends that after reading this book, you apply the process in the following order:

1. Remove toxic products from your home and garage
2. Clean, declutter, clear and organize your home
3. Buy/use environmentally friendly products
4. Learn how to use place objects (furniture, mirrors, etc.) to manifest change in your life

The relationship between people and the Earth is an important part of Harmonious Environments. To remind ourselves of this interconnection, Hertie recommends bringing the natural world into your home. Some ways to do this include displaying rocks and minerals and using houseplants as pollution busters.

Hertie uses Harmonious Adjustments (TM) that combines "the best principles of Feng Shui, the application of the Four Elements based on your birth date, color, Vastu, energy work and good design." I've read a few Feng Shui books in the past, but the author's clear instructions and enthusiasm has given me the confidence to actually try this at home.

I liked how the author reminded me to use this book as a guideline but to also trust my intuition. Do what looks and feels right for you. I also liked how the Resource section listed all the suppliers, organizations and further readings mentioned throughout the book.

Even if you aren't interested in Feng Shui, this book has valuable information about becoming an informed consumer and living a more eco-friendly life.

Armchair Interviews says read Harmonious Environment and get ready to change your life!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book with tons of information.......2007-01-18

I got this wonderful book as we are moving our place of business, and wanted to make smart choices. From the first page, Ms. Lehmeier-Hartie shares her expertise in an organized, thoughtful way. The day after I got the book, I negotiated a much more logical and healthier ventilation system, and the section on colors was far and away the most organized and logical explanation I have ever seen.

Some aspects of our project are beyond our control, but I became a much more active participant. We anxiously await our new space, and know that the suggestions made here will add to the beauty and functionality of our space. I wish I could have rated this 10 stars!

Book Description

Food journalist and former professional chef Cindy Burke writes in the introduction to this book: “Organic food can be so expensive and difficult to find that I always wondered if I was spending my money wisely. I decided to become informed, really informed, about the options — organic, conventional, local, sustainable — so that I could choose the healthiest, safest food available.”
To Buy or Not to Buy Organic is the result of Burke’s investigations. It tells you how to choose the healthiest, safest, most earth-friendly food, as you make your way through the supermarket, your local farmer’s market, or your natural foods store. Highlights include:
• Making sense of the choices presented by organic, local, sustainable, minimally treated, grass-fed and cage-free foods
• Reducing your exposure to pesticides
• Save money by knowing the foods you want to eat only if they’re organic and the foods that are pesticide-free even when they are nonorganic
• Protecting your child’s health from pesticides
• An at-a-glance shopper’s guide to more than 100 foods

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-07-28

I love this book, it is easy to read with lots of great information...everybody should buy this book and if you are looking to be healthy and free of chemicals in your body you should definately read it!!!!Good job to the writer

5 out of 5 stars The Best Source!.......2007-06-13

What a GREAT book! I learned so much from the author. She really did her homework and knows her stuff. This book inspired me to take the complete jump into organic living w/o fretting the grocery bill cost. She makes sense when she discusses this bill versus the health of your family and health costs. I don't even care anymore about the grocery bill because I know I'm making the most informed and healthy choices for my family. She has also inspired me to be more "green" and not just buy organic, but think about buying sustainable foods and at local farmer's markets. Never really grasped that concept and reasoning until now. Thanks so much!

3 out of 5 stars ALWAYS buy Organic!.......2007-06-13

Although this book lists items that consistently test negative for pesticide residues, this implies that the issue of organics is idividual consumerism. It is ALWAYS important to buy orgainic (and preferably products from local, small sustainable farms) because it's NOT JUST ABOUT YOU (the end user)!! Whenever I am standing in the market, deciding whether or not to shell out the extra cash for an orgainc product vs. a conventional one, I think about the people who live in the communities surrounding the farm that produced this product that now sits in my hand. Do I want to support pesticide use in this community? Do I want these people diagnosed with cancer, children's health to be endangered, babies to be born with deformities or mothers to miscarry their pregnancies?? When I think about the BIG PICTURE, the circumstances outside myself, how many OTHER PEOPLE are affected by my decision, I cannot in good conscience buy anything other than organic. As consumers in a capitalist country, we vote with our dollar. By making consciense-driven purchases, we send a loud message about what is imporant to us, and in turn, what we want (demand). So buy organic, and support your (and other's) right to clean, sustainable, whole food!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-23

This book answered all the questions I had about buying or not buying organic foods. I realized that I wasn't even sure what "organic" meant, and I certainly didn't know anything about the politics of organic farming. Ms Burke really knows her stuff and presents the facts clearly and well. (Of course, I would expect this from her, as I read a book that she co-authored entitled The Trans Fat Solution, which cleared up that whole transfat thing for me.)

Particularly valuable is the chapter entitled "The Dirty Dozen" - the 12 foods to eat only if they're organic. Strawberries topped that list, and potatoes, especially russets, also showed up. This is balanced by "The Clean Fifteen," fruits and vegetables that consistently test negative for pesticide residue. Happily, avocados and blueberries show up on that list. Then there's The Shopping Guide - priceless!

This book is a treasure trove of information, and a MUST READ for everyone who cares about making healthy food choices while keeping sustainable farming in mind. As I said - awesome!

5 out of 5 stars To Buy or Not To Buy Organic.......2007-03-21

I have only read a couple of chapters, and I have already learned a great deal. I have started taking the shopping guide with me to the grocery store and have found it very helpful. I pay more attention thanks to Burke-- Burke just might be able to switch me over to organics

    Book Description

While ecology as a whole continues to receive considerable attention, postharvest food handling, until recently, had not been examined from a green perspective. This has changed as health-conscious consumers look to improve both their diets and their environment. Environmentally Friendly Technologies for Agricultural Produce Quality is the first book to take a focused look from an ecological point of view at the way produce is preserved, packaged, and shipped. The book's editor, Shimshon Ben-Yehoshua, a leader in the international scientific community, presents a framework he refers to as the triple bottom line, which takes into consideration economic and societal issues and an environmental perspective. Experts and eminent researchers discuss recent developments, such as the use of genetic engineering, modified atmosphere packaging, pest control for durable and perishable produce, all designed to reduce spoilage without compromising quality or negatively impacting the environment. Keeping faith with the triple bottom line, the book explores related topics such as innovations in transportation and the value of produce to human health. This book makes an excellent handbook for postharvest professionals and others handlers of produce as well as a textbook for students preparing to meet the needs of a health and ecology conscious society.

    Book Description

Holy Cows and Hog Heaven is written by an honest-to-goodness-dirt-under-the-fingernails, optimistic clean good farmer. His goal is to:
  • Empower food buyers to pursue positive alternatives to the industrialized food system.
  • Bring clean food farmers and their patrons into a teamwork relationship.
  • Marry the best of western technology with the soul of eastern ethics.
  • Educate food buyers about productions.
  • Create a food system that enhances nature's ecology for future generations.
Holy Cows and Hog Heaven has an overriding objective of encouraging every food buyer to embrace the notion that menus are a conscious decision, creating the next generation's world one bite at a time.

3 out of 5 stars jumpy but good advice.......2007-09-04

A book that crams a lot of fact, exposition and commentary into fastfood sort of reading.

Mr. Salatin has excitement in his tone and energy in his thinking. He makes the idea of eating local practical and palatable

My only angst is his tone toward the migrant farm worker (who 'does not speak english'). Has he forgotten that this is part of our history as much as the Pennsylvania Dutch farmer, the Swedish immigrants in Minnesota, the Germans In Wisconsin, etc. ? If he resents cheap labor, it was irrelevant for him to focus on people "who don't speak english" That is a backward anglo rooted sentiment and has nothing to do with sustainable practices and gearing toward a peaceful future for locally responsible consumers and producers

Otherwise, this is a great handbook to use for wiser living.

5 out of 5 stars Changing the World One Mind at a Time.......2007-05-12

Joel Salatin is a nut! But from my experience, all visionaries tend to be a bit nutty. I came to reading this book after reading Michael Pollan's, The Omnivore's Dilemma, which is a great book in it's own right, and which dedicates a generous portion of its pages to Joel Salatin and his farm.

Joel Salatin is among the minority of Americans who have a keen insight into just how far this country has gotten off track, and he is dedicating his life to doing whatever he can to get people back on track. I am guessing he is a deeply happy man (if not a tad disturbed), because it shows in his love for the earth and the food it creates with his generous help.

This book will change the way you eat, or if not that, it will at least change the way you think while you stroll the isles at the supermarket, browsing isle after isle of plastic food. It has had a very positive effect on me and my family, and I recommend it to anyone who pauses, even for a moment, to consider the quality of the food that they eat. If you don't waste time on such trivialities, well maybe it is time that you did, for the sake of yourself, your race and the earth. Joel Salatin will help you navigate the territory.

Joel, I could have done without the Christian rhetoric, particularly the anti-abortion sentiment that peppered your book. I understand though ... you don't seem to be able to contain your passions any more than I can mine. We differ on some things, but agree on most. The writing can be a bit tricky in places, leaving me re-reading sentences over a few times, trying to decipher the meaning. But, all in all, this is a great book, and should be required reading for every citizen, non-citizen and illegal immigrant that shares this great country in decline.

I weep for the future, but Joel Salatin provides me with a little ray of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Old way of eating Resurrected.......2007-03-09

I like this book as a follow-up to Michael Pollans:"The Omnivores' Dilemma", in which Mr. Pollan visits Polyface Farm. It's good to meet the farm owner via his book, and to read his philosophy of appropriate treatment of animals grown to feed people. His animals lead peaceful, comfortable lives until their last ride. The meat industry has forgotten that these animals are living creatures who feel pain and distress. Thank you Mr. Salatin. Susan Hyson

    5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow - One Consumer's Transformation.......2006-07-09

This book has transformed the way I look at the food on my family's table. For pretty much my whole life, I had absolutely no problems with "industrial" food products. I trusted them as being safe, somewhat nutritious, and fairly tasty. I didn't make any effort to avoid processed foods - heck, I figured they were actually pretty nutritious with all the vitamins and minerals that were sprayed on them.

When I visited my farming grandparents in Maine (very small family farm closer to Polyface than a monocrop giant), I DID notice how amazingly delicious their simple foods were - potatoes I had dug out of the ground earlier that afternoon, freshly picked peas and corn on the cob, and perhaps some lettuce, tomatoes, other greens, and butter pickles my grandmother had pickled herself. I loved collecting the eggs from their hens, picking chives from their garden, and watching my grandmother can stewed tomatoes from her garden.

However, I took it for granted that times had changed and their way of life was, by necessity, going the way of the ox and cart. In fact, the first time I visited a farmer's market I was taken aback by the prices, which were significantly higher than our grocery store. I completely missed the point of what a farmer's market represented.

This book, however, turned me completely around as far as food is concerned. I was fascinated by Joel Salatin's descriptions of his farming practices versus industrial farming practices. After reading this book, I joined a local CSA and signed up for a local delivery of Polyface meat (lucky me!!) I frequent farmers markets and feel a genuine sense of gratitude towards the people who work their land and sell their crops, thereby giving people like me and my family an alternative to the supermarket chains, at least for part of the year.

But this book resonates beyond the idea of eating locally and supporting farmers (even if it costs more) who farm in a self-sustaining way. It is really a wake-up call for consciousness about everything we take for granted. It is a wake-up call to recognize the choices we make every single day. It is a wake-up call to shake off the sense of apathy and of "what can one person possibly do." We can't do everything, but that doesn't absolve us from the responsibility to do the small things that we can.

A+++ (and his meat and eggs really ARE delicious!)

5 out of 5 stars Intended to empower food buyers to choose other than from the big industrialized farm system.......2005-09-07

Written by a farmer, Holy Cows & Hog Heaven: The Food Buyer's Guide To Farm Friendly Food is intended to empower food buyers to choose other than from the big industrialized farm system. Menus and what's chosen for them is a conscious decision, Joel Salatin maintains: eating in sync with the season rather than choosing imported foods, understanding specialty and diversification in foods, and getting sanity back into food regulations are only a few of the topics addressed in a title designed to return eaters to neighbor-friendly terms.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Cookbook from a Great Company that Donates to Outstanding Organizations.......2006-03-11

I love Paul Newman. He does so much for kids and other charitable organizations. It's hard to believe an actor like Paul Newman would be so active in non-profit organizations. It's also nice that he does it through offering awesome products that help your family out too.

This cookbook is an awesome example of that. They contain mostly healthy recipes that contribute to a well-balanced and nutritious meal. While this cookbook isn't for cooking with the youngest of children, it is perfect for children over 5, even up to teenagers. One of the things that I love about this book is that it has a Vegetables/Sides category that is packed with vege meals for kids, along with suggestions on what to add to make even the ickiest vegetables appealing to the most of... ahem... Discriminating palates. :) The "Ten Tips for food and Kitchen Safety" tips are great for parents who're teaching kitchen safety.

The book is filled with anecdotal stores and letters from children and other people impacted by Paul Newman's "Hole in the Wall Gang" group. Some of the stories are hilarious (my favorite was the one from the 13 year old who said she likes Paul Newman's Dressing because it doesn't give her dad "the squirts").

For charitable purposes alone, that makes this book worth the investment. But something about knowing you've bought a cookbook that helps reinforce good eating, where you can teach your kids how to cook anything from Chicken Soup and Stone Soup, Tic-Tac-Toe Quesadillas, Peace Pasta, Three-Cheese Potato Gratin, Cheddar Muffins, and other great, family friendly meals... I don't know... It just makes you feel really good. :) I don't know what's best about this book... The recipes, the fact you can make them with your family, or the charities you support by buying it. Anybody who cooks needs this book!

Or maybe I'm a little biased... There's a recipe called "Newman's Very Own Lemon Blueberry Cake" which, I swear, tastes EXACTLY like my wedding cake... ;)

5 out of 5 stars God Bless This Company!.......2001-10-13

I am a loyal user of Newman's Own and Newman's Own Organics. This is a fun cookbook. My daughter and I enjoyed making the Jack in the Beanstalk Soup. It is nice to have a cookbook including so many of the Newman products. Lemonade Chicken Wings? Very tasty and a nice variety from the spicy.

Congratualtions Mr Newman. I hope this book makes the kids a lot of money!

5 out of 5 stars The Turkey meatballs and spaghetti is really good........1999-03-09

The books recipes are fun and easy. Some of My family members will not eat beef, and the Turkey meatballs and spaghetti was an excellent sub for beef meatballs.

5 out of 5 stars Better than gourmet restaurants.......2006-09-04

When I used to eat meat, I dined at many 5 star gourmet restaurants. Many of these recipes belong in that category. The food is delicious. The only downside is that some of the recipes may take a long time to make and for the average 8 to 5er, you won't have time to make them after work. You will also need access to a descent health food store as some of the ingredients such as miso and agar flakes are not going to be in your average grocery store. I still highly recommend this book. Besides the excellent recipes, there is some good nutritional information about cooking and food quality. There is also a good glossary in the back for the less common ingredients describing where they come from and what they are used for. Great book for any vegan.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cookbook.......2005-11-16

I'm vegan and this is my favorite cookbook. The recipes are simple to make, elegant, and delicious - it's perfection. Ron Picarski is a genius. I have sworn to try out every single recipe before I die. I'm about a third of the way there so I know I've still got some great food ahead of me!

Try it out, there's something in it for anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cook Book Ever!.......2001-08-02

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for instructions on eating great food that is quick and easy to make. Even if you are not a vegetarian, "Friendly Foods" is the a great gourmet helper. My husband is not a vegetarian and he is crazy about the recipes!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and Delightful.......2000-07-23

My husband and I (both vegetarians) were lucky enough to be on a cruise in 1998 on which Mr. Pickarski was our chef. I had more delicious food during those six days than I ever had before or since! After we got home I ordered every Pickarski item I could get my hands on, this book included.

Bear in mind, these distinctive, gourmet vegan recipes aren't your everyday fare. This is the book you'll want to pull out when you need to wow your non-vegetarian friends. My favorite is the Chocolate Cream Couscous Cake (page 220). Vegan or not, this is one of the most elegant and delicious desserts you can ever hope to taste. Happy eating!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best gourmet vegan cookbook on the market!.......1999-04-13

Many times I have eaten vegan recipies which are not only bland but unimaginative. When I bought friendly foods over 7 years ago (when I was just turning to a vegetarian lifestyle) I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

The recipies in here are not only nutritionaly well balanced, they are easy on the stomach, delicious and rather easy to make! This book was one of the few that convinced me that eating a non dairy/meat diet would not only be easy, but very satisfying.

Some of the best recipies in this book are the Carob Cake with the Peanut Butter frosting, Tofu Spinach Pie, Hazelnut Glennie and the Carrot Pate.

This book is not only well versed in well tasting vegetarian/vegan recipies, but is chock full of good nutritional advice as well. Although I have not tried all of the recipies in this book, every single one I have tried has been relatively easy to make and the ingredients are relatively easy to get at your local helth food store (and some more enlightened grocery store chains)

1 out of 5 stars Kidney Friendly Comfort Foods.......2007-08-01

The author should stick to his primary profession. He is not a medical professional and moreover doesn't have a background in nutrition or renal disease. He is only guided by the suffering and affliction of some close friend. The recipes are quite similar to regular recipes you can download from the web. There are no substitutions like Splenda for sugar, Dash for sodium, egg substitutes for real eggs, and other nondairy product sustitutions, reduced phosphorus baking soda for baking soda, etc. Some of the meat dishes run up to 30 g of Protien per serving. I am not an expert but I have been told by my doctor that this will do a job on your liver.Take this book with a grain of salt (pun intended).
