Book Description

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally ever since. He has written fantasy, horror, and science fiction, and for his sins spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer/producer, working on Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid 90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris, a big white dog called Mischa, and two cats named Augustus and Caligula who think they run the place.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-11

Minimum Maturity Level - Adult
Strong violence. Strong language. Sexual situations.

Previous Reading Required - Major
You must read the previous three books, starting with "A Game of Thrones".

Reading Level - Average
Very easy to follow.

Rate of Development - Extremely Fast
Picks up where "A Storm of Swords" left off.

The Story - Anything said will be a spoiler. Mainly for those who haven't read the previous books.

My Suggestion - Highly Recommended
This book pretty much winds down when it comes to the action. There is still action, but not at such a grand scale as the battle of King's Landing. There is some shocking moments again, just like how GRRM likes doing it. I have heard many people gripe about this book but it is still an essential read to keep up with what is going on with all the characters. Part of the reason of gripes, I would think, is because GRRM had to split this book in two, which is why "A Dance of Dragons" will feature the other characters that everyone likes so much. Still, it's a great book to read.

2 out of 5 stars Arrgh.......2007-10-10

I think he could have made this a five book series rather than a seven. While I have enjoyed the format and the character development, and the plot twists, its started to get hackneyed. Every time you start to take an interest in a character they are cruelly maimed or killed. We get it, life is tough, and if you are in any way involved with anyone in power, you are going to die a horrible death. If you are a nobody, you still die horribly, but with less ink. If you are cute and spunky, you die slower. And if we start to run out of the hundreds of cannon fodder characters, we just introduce new ones.

I don't know if I'm going to buy the next book.

5 out of 5 stars Great novel but..........2007-09-30

I write this review with mixed feelings. Let me begin by saying that I think this book is great. Mr. Martin shows the same quality here as in the first three books. It is true that there is less action here, but every story has different stages with different requirements. It is obvious that the aftermath of a great war cannot be as tumultous as the war itself. Many people complain about their favorite characters not being here and I understand them. One reads this saga because of the characters. So, no matter how well written is something, if you don't care about the characters, you will not enjoy the book. I was fortunate, because my favorite character is Arya. Eventhough there were only a few chapters about her, I turned every page with the hope that there would be another Arya story. In short, I think this book is worthy of the same praise the other three received, but...

Let me now explain why I have mixed feelings. It is true that the pace of this book is slow. Not much happens in more than six hundred pages. At first sight this is not a problem. When one is reading quality literature, the more the better. But when one considers some implications, this point of view changes. At this pace, I think it is impossible that the series will end in three more books. A Dance with Dragons will not go in time beyond A Feast for Crows. This means the whole Cersei thing won't be resolved until book six. But not only that, we have to consider all the loose ends remaining in Feast added with those of Dance. Even assuming that some plots resolve quickly in book six, this means that there remains only one book and a half of story, and still the Starks are children, Jon and Daenerys are still teenagers. Despite all the talk that the series doesn't depict clearly good or evil characters, the truth of the matter is that the Starks and Daenerys are "the good guys", at least the leading characters. Not for nothing the saga is named A Song of Ice and Fire. I have been waiting to see them grow and become the characters they potentially are. For me the greatest strength of this series is that we have witnessed all the struggles and trials these characters endured in order to become the people they are. But the thing is that moment doesn't arrive, they continue to be children. This could mean that Bran, Sansa and Arya will not play a major role in the climax of the story, and that Jon and Daenerys will defeat rivals which surpass them in experience. If this is going to happen I will be dissaponted. On the other hand, this could mean that we will read only a book and a half with the grown protagonists. But then this would be a let down. If reading about children and teenagers has been a profound experience, can you imagine reading about them as mature and experienced people. I can't wait to read that. I have been waiting more than five years and I am ready to wait whatever it takes. I would like to read at least as many books of them as adults as have been published.

This takes me to the final point. If George Martin enjoys writing about Brienne in such detail, I think he will enjoy more writing about an adult Arya or Bran. This makes me think that the series will have more books than seven, which is a good thing for me due to what I have said. At the same time is a terrible thing, because that means that the most probable thing to happen is that the series will never be completed. Let me say the truth. Mr. Martin is a first class writer. In my opinion he is at the same level of Borges or Joyce, but most of his life he was just a little known writer with no fans. Then he began writing what could be one of the best works of literature of all time, and with it came fame and success. And he is enjoying that, because he waited his whole life for this, and he deserved it. The problem, I think, is that he lost his way in the process. He spends so much time with the fans, traveling, editing other books and many other innumerable projects, that he hardly has any time or energy to write his magnus opus. He took five years to publish what he calls half a book, and he will take probably three years to write a book which he said he had more than half already written. This means he will take at least seven years to complete the sixth book (or four if the publishers force him to split it too). Mr. Martin isn't young and if he dies before finishing his saga, all will be lost. What could have been one of the greatest stories of all time will be nothing. Cervantes wouldn't be what he is if he hasn't finished "El Quijote". Eventhough the Tuft stories are good, eventhough Fevre Dream is the best vampire story I've ever read, Mr. martin will be rembered by A SoIF.

I hope he realizes that he is an artist and that his legacy is at risk, I hope he finds again happiness in writing instead of being a torture that keeps him from going to conventions. I hope he finishes this series in a way that fulfills all expectations. I hope to see him occupy his rightful place in literature history. I hope and I wait.

3 out of 5 stars Twice as long as necessary -- but I still loved reading it..........2007-09-20

Not since the Lord of the Rings has an author written a series that has such amazing SCOPE as GRRM has pulled together with these books. While arguments will be made for YEARS about the contributions of Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind and others, it seems hard to place them in the same league simply because I consider those books good and entirely worth reading, but Martin has created one of the few Fantasy series that can also be considered true Literature. Again, some may disagree, but that is essentially how I consider it.

I finished this book quite a long time ago and while I normally post my reviews within a day or so of closing the last page, I kept putting this one off as I attempted to just figure out exactly what I thought of it. I believe the bulk of us Song of Ice & Fire readers have all heard that this book originally began as a single novel, and due to several unforseen circumstances, ended up being divided into two separate-but-equal parts of basically the same book. You can REALLY tell, too. The obvious omitting of several MAJOR POV's is the first and biggest obstacle against giving this a full 5 Stars. As MANY have also noted, even though there ARE some incredibly important issues brought up which help the plot move forward here, again it is nearly impossible NOT to notice how LITTLE forward the book takes us overall. Several reviewers have noted the possible absence of an editor with the stones to actually trim the fat, which this novel really needed. I would have rather waited an extra year and had what was cut out to make 'A Dance With Dragons' ADDED and then properly edited in order to seriously move the overall storyline AHEAD. There is little doubt that GRRM is likely the most talented Fantasy Author writing today (although the debate continues...), but if this series is expected to finish up before the end of the next century, I sincerely hope that GRRM steps up the pace--even if by just a little. Robert Jordan recently passed away, and so far (at least as I write this) the end of the Wheel of Time Series remains unfinished...now he may have finished writing the last novel before he passed away (gosh I hope so...) we can see what happens by doing this and dragging things out longer than necessary. While I honestly believe GRRM really DOES have a handle on where the story is going and he honestly does know the end from the beginning, I also hope that the end is in sight. Making us all wait what seems like decades in between these books is nothing short of torture and possibly against the Geneva Convention if I am not mistaken...

With that said, I STILL had a great time reading AFFC. Yes it dragged and lost momentum and I felt that my journey was basically 'Hurry Up And Wait', I have invested so much into these characters, (although through sad experience I have also discovered not to become TOO attached to any one character in particular) that even a SMALL glimpse into their world is better than none at all. I anxiously await the arrival of the 2nd half of this tale begun in 'A Feast For Crows', I also bite my nails wondering if part 2 isn't just more of the same here. I have learned to give the benefit of the doubt in a lot of instances, and because GRRM is so dang good at writing, I feel compelled to extend it here as well. But hopefully my patience won't have to be tested quite to this degree much longer...

Where have all the editors gone?

With Feast, the 4th installment of the Song of Ice and Fire series, Martin has begun to get carried away with himself. Much like what readers experienced with Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, Feast represents a serious departure from the tight narrative drive that powered the first three books.

Very little time is spent on the characters we came to care about in past installments and, even worse, the "splitting" of this volume leaves several major characters out of the mix altogether. The vast bulk of this book is dedicated to two characters who are either dead or marginalized by the end of the book and I found myself wondering how much of their plot impact could have been accomplished with several hundred less pages?

After all, if you spend 200 pages having someone wander about the countryside only to die at the end, the hope is they accomplished something that will have future plot implications. If they didn't, you wasted our time. If they did, then the importance of their accomplishment(s) must be weighed against the time taken to tell the story. Without seeing the impact in book 6, it's impossible to say how much of book 4 was unnecessary drivel, but I suspect that much of it should have hit the editing room floor.

This is an excellent grill book. It gives you new ideas on how to grill better. Well illustrated and it is written by someone that enjoys cooking on the grill. This is a keeper

However, many are too fancy or require ingredients that I don't have in my "meat and potatoes" kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Grilling Even More Fun.......2007-02-06

I love this cookbook and have given copies to friends and family. I purchased this new edition because my old one fell apart from use.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect companion for your Gas Grill.......2006-07-12

Let me first say that I love barbecuing, and I guess you do, or you wouldn't even be checking this or any other barbecue book. I try to grill my family dinners almost every weekend, so I would have to say that I have put on thousands of barbecues this far. I own several barbecue and grilling books, and this is one of the best. I consider this book great because with the recipes on it I can try every now and then to make something a little bit different (I guess just to avoid a mutiny among my family crew, Ja Ja).

I don't have to do a fancy or hard to find ingredients, or follow step-by-steps a recipe that might requires to long, but I get great ideas that help me introduce variations that keep the weekends barbecues interesting and fun the whole family.

In this book you will find some recipe or idea that you can try, or just learn something new from the "Basics of Gourmet Gas grilling" included at the beginning of the book.

Last, but not least, always enjoy the experience of barbecuing and grilling at home, with or without this book. With your own recipes or with borrowed recipes. Just enjoy the moment and have a lot of fun with family and friends around the grill.

5 out of 5 stars Grass BBQ'ing taken to the next level!.......2006-03-03

I was always good at BBQ'ing with the Gas Grill, but i ran out of ideas on what to do next. This book is amazing, it opened up a whole new BBQ world to me, and encouraged me to experiment more. There isnt one recipie i tried that i didnt like. My personal favorite is the Briskett!

Book Description

From the bestselling social commentator and cultural historian, a fascinating exploration of one of humanity’s oldest traditions: the celebration of communal joy

In the acclaimed Blood Rites, Barbara Ehrenreich delved into the origins of our species’ attraction to war. Here, she explores the opposite impulse, one that has been so effectively suppressed that we lack even a term for it: the desire for collective joy, historically expressed in ecstatic revels of feasting, costuming, and dancing.

Ehrenreich uncovers the origins of communal celebration in human biology and culture. Although sixteenth-century Europeans viewed mass festivities as foreign and “savage,” Ehrenreich shows that they were indigenous to the West, from the ancient Greeks’ worship of Dionysus to the medieval practice of Christianity as a “danced religion.” Ultimately, church officials drove the festivities into the streets, the prelude to widespread reformation: Protestants criminalized carnival, Wahhabist Muslims battled ecstatic Sufism, European colonizers wiped out native dance rites. The elites’ fear that such gatherings would undermine social hierarchies was justified: the festive tradition inspired French revolutionary crowds and uprisings from the Caribbean to the American plains. Yet outbreaks of group revelry persist, as Ehrenreich shows, pointing to the 1960s rock-and-roll rebellion and the more recent “carnivalization” of sports.

Original, exhilarating, and deeply optimistic, Dancing in the Streets concludes that we are innately social beings, impelled to share our joy and therefore able to envision, even create, a more peaceable future.

5 out of 5 stars Life minus dance equals zero.......2007-09-29

What is it about the human psyche that almost demands that one take off the social mask, shed inhibition, and engage in behavior requiring sizable kinetic energy, behavior of which is sometimes totally beyond the pale of acceptable standards of conduct? Is this behavior an intrinsic human need, or maladjustment that requires tuning or even rescuing by those cultures that do not stoop to the writhing and bodily contortions of the primitive, backward cultures that do? Is stillness, is the sterile boardroom composure that appears settled and refined, an acid test for rationality? Can one indeed be rational and still indulge periodically in the drunken-Mount-of-Ephesus-like ecstasy of the ancient Greeks? Is dance a sign of social decadence or proof of social health, and if the former why do so many people throughout history risk reprisal by authorities by joining their friends, neighbors, and strangers to "dance in the streets?"

This book provides an excellent context to begin to answer these questions. Although the book is short, and frequently provides only anecdotal evidence for its assertions, both its statements and conclusions are plausible, and the author exhibits an intellectual honesty that is becoming rare in today's intellectual circles. She is very aware, and admits so throughout the book, that much more evidence is needed to conclude some of the claims that are made between its pages. It is a book that puts human movement on a pedestal, as an object or worship and as an activity that respects tradition as well as rebels against it. When one reaches its final pages, one becomes more convinced that dance, that is, dance with no inhibitions or restraints, or "dancing in the streets", is part of being human, a necessity like air, food, and water. A culture that has it is a vibrant and confident one. A culture where it is absent is a dysfunctional one.

But as the author details in the book, many attempts are made to suppress the out-of-equilibrium ethos of dance, sometimes by persuasion or intimidation, but most often by force. And most of the world's major religions have been all too happy to assist with this. They demand stillness in their subjects: movements resembling even in the slightest the ignorant savages of tribal cultures are an anathema. One must not be too elemental-to close to the jungle, if one is to have a higher, organized, rational culture. But even the most zealous of efforts fails to rid the world of the pestilence of dance. It reappears, as the author shows, in the sports stadiums throughout the civilized world, and in the high fidelity, high-decibel, trance-inducing rock concerts of the same.

The author ends the book lamenting the state of the planet and hoping for a revival of the translation of potential to kinetic energy that is the street dance. Her concerns are to be noted but there is really no cause for worry. There is plenty of energy, plenty of activity, plenty of innovation, plenty of action in this ruckus of scientific and technological advancement, in this incredible outpouring of creativity that is stirring up the conceptual dust. In this carnival called the twenty-first century.

4 out of 5 stars ecstasy is innate.......2007-09-22

Dance Anthropologists, Dance Makers, Cultural Anthropologists, those seeking a community to call their own, and those who long to be invited to 'the dance' will all delight in this extraordinary tale, ehemm I mean history. Barbara invites us all back to the dance, our place of connectedness, ecstasy, and pure expression of life (and culture). Try to read this and not feel its truth in your neurological wiring. Read Anya Royce Peterson and then this, or this and then Anya, or Levi Strauss and then this, or this and then Strauss. But whatever you do, don't overlook this book. I haven't yet read Ehrenreich's Blood Rites: the origins and history of the passion of war, but she makes a strong argument that it is the other half of this story, and it will surely be my next read.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling read.......2007-08-30

This is an interesting and compelling book to read. Although, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the historical information, the descriptions of rock concerts and sports events in today's world are consistent with my observations. I would add that political events that involve large numbers of people also share the same attributes: chanting, moving, and collective engagement.

5 out of 5 stars SAVE THE WORLD......DANCE!.......2007-07-18

I totally connect with this book! Ehrenreich has done a brilliant job of:
1)Thinking of the subject in the first place; 2)Knowing how important it is to connect up the lack of Celebration and Joy with the history of Patriarchy; 3)Weaving the quotes of many authors through the historical sequence to demonstrate the vividness of Celebration/Ecstatic experiences. As well as demonstrating the suppression of such.
This book presents a wholy new perspective on the innards and basic instincts that are the invisible pulse of patriarchy. The "head' part of patriarchy, linear analytical thinking, suppressed the "heart" part, the
social/emotional feelings, that are natural to human being-ness.
This book gives much Hope for our ability, innate and alive, to blossom more fully into Joy as we continue our practical and political grassroots growth. We all want Community and, happily, Community and Celebration, work symbiotically to energize the natural pulse of humanity...Joy.
THERE'LL BE DANCIN'....DANCIN' IN THE STREETS!

5 out of 5 stars an invitation to think, not a history of dance.......2007-06-30

Barbara Ehrrenreich is a writer and thinker involved in the exploration of social phenomenon. She is certainly a political thinker and definitely has a point of view about social phenomena as they impact modern life. She is not an historian or an anthropologist. I'm at a loss to understand the criticism of this book based on what it never pretends itself to be, a history of dance or an anthropological study of the ecstatic phenomenon.
Several people have found it necessary to point out that Barbara Ehrenreich is on the left politically and a product of the 1960s with an "ah hah" mentality that seems to indicate she has has somehow tried to hide this, or that it inherently shameful. Social thinkers who propose changes in the way we currently conduct our lives or our society ALWAYS have ideas which they promote (pejoratively described as biases) because they actively advocate for change. It would be dishonest to attempt to hide them behind a false "objectivity."
This kind of false "objectivity" has sapped the life, not only from much that passes for social commentary, but also from investigative journalism, in which the collection of a quote or two from "authorities" on each side of a conflict has replaced the search for the truth about a given situation. It has also lead to the false notion that the truth is always located in the middle of the road.
Bravo to Barbara Ehrenreich who never hides behind this sort of fakery in her search for the truth as she sees it. She invites readers to join the dance of two mindes, the writer's and the reader's, in thinking about topics that engage her own thoughts.
Some critics seem to be attacking the fact that her writing is interesting and fun to read. Never fear! I managed to read the book and enjoy it very much while maintaining my critical faculties and without agreeing with every one of Ehrenreich's conclusions. I did learn a lot AND my mind was engaged to think about dance and the human capacity for collective joy in ways that are new and exciting to me.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for people who like to try new things.......2007-05-31

"Feast Without Yeast" was necessary for me since not only do I have CRS but am also extremely allergic to yeast. However, because I was sick for three years before doctors realized what was wrong, my body (or my mind) learned to dislike 'new' foods in fear of becoming ill.

This book is fantastic if you're not a picky eater, or if you don't like eating the same dozen items over and over again. I appreciated the depth in which the author discussed the reason he write this book, and am glad it's on my shelf for reference!

5 out of 5 stars Feast Without Yeast.......2007-05-15

I was so happy to find yummy salad dressings in here that will work for me. I have to cut down on fruit and eat more veggies, but I couldn't have vinegar or dairy. This pretty much eliminates all the store bought dressings. I like the garlic tomatoe dressing. It was really easy and very good. There are a lot of great receipes if you suffer from systemic yeast, although those who are very severe need to stay away from the receipes with clover honey in them.

5 out of 5 stars No longer a drudgery.......2007-01-10

This guide is so chock full of great information and useable recipes for the yeast free needy. More and more people are finding serious allergies to yeast, wheat, and milk, the very foods we find challenging to avoid. Lots of wonderful recipes to try also.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Someone That Knows Something About Candida.......2007-01-05

Because if you DON'T know anything about Candida, you would not be able to avoid the pitfalls of the "avoid" foods that are mentioned in this book.

Proceed with caution and always listen to your own body where this book and its recipes are concerned. Not sure I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book is just what I needed........2006-05-20

I've seen some bad reviews of this book, but those people must not have needed it as badly as I did. I found this book after working through my chronic yeast infection for a year.
The authors make it relatively easy to start eliminating problem foods from your diet, working your way through the process as far as needed. I happen to be one of the 'bad' cases. I can't even eat everything on the strictest level-- #4.
The recipes are 'real', things that somebody with problems could eat. Almost all the recipes are uncomplicated (only a few being detailed), many very easy, and straightforward. Many could be considered 'fast food' if you have a crockpot or can handle leftovers remade. Many recipes help you understand how much of certain fresh herbs to use, too.
This book is valuable for those who are serious about this topic. I appreciate it very much.

In the preface to A Moveable Feast, Hemingway remarks casually that "if the reader prefers, this book may be regarded as fiction"--and, indeed, fact or fiction, it doesn't matter, for his slim memoir of Paris in the 1920s is as enchanting as anything made up and has become the stuff of legend. Paris in the '20s! Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, lived happily on $5 a day and still had money for drinks at the Closerie des Lilas, skiing in the Alps, and fishing trips to Spain. On every corner and at every café table, there were the most extraordinary people living wonderful lives and telling fantastic stories. Gertrude Stein invited Hemingway to come every afternoon and sip "fragrant, colorless alcohols" and chat admid her great pictures. He taught Ezra Pound how to box, gossiped with James Joyce, caroused with the fatally insecure Scott Fitzgerald (the acid portraits of him and his wife, Zelda, are notorious). Meanwhile, Hemingway invented a new way of writing based on this simple premise: "All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know."

Hemingway beautifully captures the fragile magic of a special time and place, and he manages to be nostalgic without hitting any false notes of sentimentality. "This is how Paris was in the early days when we were very poor and very happy," he concludes. Originally published in 1964, three years after his suicide, A Moveable Feast was the first of his posthumous books and remains the best. --David Laskin

Book Description

Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein; tender memories of his first wife, Hadley; and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft. It is a literary feast, brilliantly evoking the exuberant mood of Paris after World War I and the youthful spirit, unbridled creativity, and unquenchable enthusiasm that Hemingway himself epitomized.

Download Description

"You belong to me and all Paris belongs to me and I belong to this notebook and this pencil." Begun in the autumn of 1957 and published posthumously in 1964, Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast captures what it meant to be young and poor and writing in Paris during the 1920s. A correspondent for the Toronto Star, Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, three years after the trauma of the Great War and at the beginning of the transformation of Europe's cultural landscape: Braque and Picasso were experimenting with cubist forms; James Joyce, long living in self-imposed exile from his native Dublin, had just completed Ulysses; Gertude Stein held court at 27 rue de Fleurus, and deemed young Ernest a member of rue génération perdue; and T. S. Eliot was a bank clerk in London. It was during these years that the as-of-yet unpublished young writer gathered the material for his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, and the subsequent masterpieces that followed. Among these small, reflective sketches are unforgettable encounters with the members of Hemingway's slightly rag-tag circle of artists and writers, some also fated to achieve fame and glory, others to fall into obscurity. Here, too, is an evocation of the Paris that Hemingway knew as a young man - a map drawn in his distinct prose of the streets and cafés and bookshops that comprised the city in which he, as a young writer, sometimes struggling against the cold and hunger of near poverty, honed the skills of his craft. A Moveable Feast is at once an elegy to the remarkable group of expatriates that gathered in Paris during the twenties and a testament to the risks and rewards of the writerly life.

1 out of 5 stars Hatred of adjectives.......2007-08-08

What a poisonous, vituperatve, jealous, mean-spirtied man he must have been. Also self-righteous and condescending.
Does anybody read his tripe anymore?

1 out of 5 stars Frustration and confusion over contradictions.......2007-08-07

That's all I felt as I picked up this book to read. Is it fact or fiction? To me, and others that I have spoken to, it makes a world of difference as to how I approach a book, it's characters, location, and events that take place. This book is supposed to be Hemingway's memoirs. I have no idea who is on the cover.

There is a disclaimer by the publishing company that this is a work of fiction.

Not to mention Hemingway's own explanation that does not make a bit of sense. "If the reader prefers, this book may be regarded as fiction. But there is always the chance that such a book of fiction may throw some light on what was written as fact."

Following that, there is a note written by M.H. that states that this book covers the years 1921-1926 in Paris.

Lastly, there are nine black and white photographs of people and places that supposedly do not even exist.

I became so frustrated with all of these contradictions that I did not even bother to read the book.

4 out of 5 stars Hemingway's Last Best Work.......2007-06-11

Published posthumously, this memoir is a series of sketches recounting episodes from Hemingway's life in Paris in the early 1920s. It is probably the best thing Hemingway wrote in his late years. This is the period when Hemingway perfected his laconic style and produced several of the short stories that form his most durable work. Many of the sketches display the economy of style and eye for telling detail found in Hemingway's best short stories. Much of the book is devoted to describing his life as a young writer trying to perfect his style. It contains interesting, though not necessarily objective, portraits of Hemingway's friends Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The presiding spirit of this book is Hemingway's first wife, Hadley Richardson Hemingway.
This book has a more than wistful quality because of the circumstances under which it was written. Hemingway produced it in the late 1950s when he was struggling with his alcoholism, bouts of depression, and not very successful attempts to produce major novels. The contrast with the vigor, productivity, and happiness of this Parisian period must have been painful for Hemingway though only at the very end of book does a note of self-pity creep in.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-06-01

So many good things have been said of this book and I can add nothing more. Anybody wanting to understand Hemingway and disciplined writing should read or reread this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good present for someone going to Paris.......2007-03-08

This book by Hem was published after his death. You can of see this, Hem would never have published some of these stories if he was alive and kicking - at least he would have edited them heavily. Still it is an amazing book filled with beautiful memories of a fantastic city when it was both good and affordable. Today Paris is still a good city, but it's hardly affordable. Anyway, if you intend to travel to Paris by yourself or if some of your close friends will visit Paris, they will be most happy to get this as a present. Afterwards they will keep thanking you every time you meet them - yes, it's just that good...

5 out of 5 stars A SOUL WAKING JOURNEY.......2007-06-27

I'm nearing the end of my 40 Day Mind Fast Soul Feast and I must say that this tiny book has fed my soul and quickened my spirit. At first I was simply uncomfortable with the stirrings, but I continued to do the daily reading, prayer and meditation and I can honestly say that it has moved me to a much more comfortable space. If you are going through some life challenges this book will help you put things into perspective on your own. What a small price to pay for a neverending peace of mind.

5 out of 5 stars Never done this before..........2007-05-13

I have never submitted a review on Amazon before so I'm a little nervous, even though I am a librarian and used to write reviews "for a living." Here goes...

I'm on day 38 of the 40 daily readings, and I can tell you two things for sure. First, it takes about two minutes to read each daily segment and I re-read each piece many times throughout the day to fully understand what the passage is saying. Sometimes I felt like I was reading Greek with the first reading, but when I went back several hours later and read it again it all made perfect sense.

Second, I am not the same person I was when I started this book. I feel a satisfaction and peace now that I was always looking for before but could never quite find or hold on to. Where there was unrest and feelings of angst before, I now have feelings of love, joy, and contentment. I feel more capable, more in control of my life and my feelings/emotions, and a general sense of wonder about my life that I haven't felt since I was a child.

This book is not for those who are still emotionally tied to traditional church dogma. An openness to new ways of thinking about God, Christ, and spirituality in general is required. The more you ponder the ideas presented in this book, the more you will get out of it. It is quite small, and easily fits in a small purse or even a back pocket. Mine goes with me everywhere, because of the enjoyment I receive from reading each day's passage repeatedly throughout my day.

I hope this helps.
Thank you,
Christine

5 out of 5 stars A profound delight! or rather..A profound relight!.......2007-04-28

I am now on my second round of the 40 day Mind Fast/Soul Feast. We Fast from the mind's chatter and Feast on the fullness of Soul communing with God within. The first 40 day Fast/Feast was so profound that I was stunned that reading the two pages for each day of Michael Beckwith's obvious spiritual wisdom could so inspire me to expand and go deeper into an easeful Resting in the Presence of God within. This second round the words jump off the page and go right into Soul of me and I know that my 3rd round will be reading each day's wisdom for a week and then I will stay with each day for a month. This book has so much wisdom and inspiration packed into each sentence that my only regret is that it is not in hardback because I know that I will soon wear it out. The words that stayed with me all day today 4/26/07 are "create space between you and the fictional character you call yourself." As I sat with this today I realized that my true identity is pure God Soul Essence and the "fictional character I call myself" has a repetitive story line with memories that have no real life of their own; especially when the true me sits quietly, relaxes, and enjoys the Eternal Now while gratefully communing with my loving Creator. This merging, of course, is always available to all of us. Michael Beckwith has a way of inspiring us to do this in a truly easeful fashion. I recommend you purchase this beautiful little volume and let the words inspire and uplift.

Dr. Dean Raffelock

5 out of 5 stars I love this little book.......2007-03-26

I can't believe how packed it is with inspiration and wonderful teachings. Michael is definitely a very gifted, special teacher. I am about halfway through and don't want to skip a day. It is a great way to start your day and is at the same time helping me to get in touch with the Essence of who I am. I heartily recommend it to everyone!

5 out of 5 stars new perceptions.......2007-01-21

I found Dr. Michael Beckwith's book extremely helpful in altering my perceptions and expanding my understanding of "Spiritual". His insights and his ability to communicate them are a rare find and they uplift my spirit and deepen my connection with God (Spirit, Universe, Higher Self, Cosmic Consciousness, Ultimate Reality, The Buddha Mind, The Mind of Christ, pick which identity works best for you, they are all one and the same to me.)
If you are looking for hellfire and brimstone you will NOT find it here. In this book are positive, life affirming words that encourage one to grow, to reach for a higher belief and understanding of the ONE POWER
and that we are all one energy, divine. He explains how positively use this power to manifest the good we desire, the light and love, peace and wonder of our exsistence. I can only speak for myself, and I want much more of the beneficial, upbeat blessings in my life.
Beckwith is a scholar and a visionary, his words can assist you in changing your life. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?

2 out of 5 stars Decent Intro to Fasting.......2007-09-30

For beginners only. Experienced fasters need not apply, unless you want to read some testimonies. All in all, you could do without though. As for beginners, this book does do a good job of creating excitement, enthusiasm, and a desire to fast. It is very fundamental. So if you're just starting, go for it. If you've been in this for a while, there's nothing new here.

Top recommendation for fasting: The Rewards of Fasting by Mike Bickle

3 out of 5 stars Fast and Pray and Love and Forgive .......2007-06-07

I am all for praying and fasting and that's the reason I bought this book and for the sections of this book that actually deal with praying and fasting, which is perhaps a third of this book, I give this book five stars. The sections of the book that deal with praying and fasting talk about the benefits of fasting, how to begin and end a fast, different kinds of fasting, some wonderful experiences that the author had, as well as quotes some excerpts from the Bible.

The rest of this books is focused on church, world politics and the author's crusades in different parts of the world, as well as quotations from the Bible that deal with war and destricution and frankly speaking,
I find this in contrast with the teachings of Jesus, who taught about love and peace and forgiveness. In that respect I much prefer books by Matthew Fox and Annalee Skarin, which are written in the spirit of the teachings of Jesus and the Sermon on the Mount "Blessed are the peacemakers, between neighbors and between nations, who have a peaceful mind to resolve human discrepancies. They should be the treasurers of divine peace from above in order to provide this peace for others who shall be sons of God."

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, the best book on fasting today!.......2007-03-30

There are a lot of books written on fasting, but none like this! The author, Mahesh Chavda, is an ex-Hindu who gave his heart, mind, body and soul to Christ. This is not a "dry" read - there are many personal accounts of miracles that will build your faith! The author has lived out what he writes.

The list of benefits of fasting is so clear and so Biblically based that even if you only read that one chapter in the book, it could change your life. Mahesh's message that there is power in fasting and prayer that is not available in simply praying cannot be ignored! Believers who desire to be more like Christ and to serve others more effectively will not be disappointed in this wonderful study on one of the Biblical disciplines of the faith. As Mahesh reminds us, when Jesus refers to fasting, he says "When you fast..." not "if you fast." He that has an ear to hear, listen to what The Spirit is saying to The Church.

5 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST!.......2007-02-17

This is the best book I've ever read on this subject matter. From the foundation laid for understanding the premise for fasting/prayer to all aspects of why and the countless benefits of and reasons for fasting. It has been said that most Christians would volunteer for an IRS tax audit before they would volunteer for an organized fast @ their local church; this book will definetely challenge that mind set. Also, and most importantly to the Believer, all declarations are Biblically based with examples from the scripture not the authors opinions or musings. This is a be all you can be type of book, whiners be warned, myself included. uld be dishonest.

5 out of 5 stars The Hidden Power of Prayer and Fasting.......2006-03-13

This is a very inspirational book. It touched my heart. Anyone who wants to be closer to God or get closer to God, this book is for you. This will open your heart and mind.

If you consider eating with friends and family a joyful, indulgent celebration chances are you love a good feast. And who better to carefully guide you through the daunting task of preparing that Feast than the domestic goddess herself Nigella Lawson. Written in the tradition of Nigella Bites and How to Eat, Feast is a cookbook for the sensualist that wants to eat very well, but also wants to spend time enjoying the company of their guests instead of struggling with the creation of the meal. What sets Lawson apart is not that she's a good cookbook writer, but a strong writer period. Similar to her other books, Nigella's Feast is presented as part personal memoir, part educational, and part recipe presentation. There is a nice blend of occasions including the obvious (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and Easter), a few culturally specific ones (Rosh Hashanah, Georgian Feast, and Venetian Feast), feasts for kids, for vegetarians, and an elegant cocktail party. Each chapter begins with an overview of that particular "Feast." Generally, there is a personal story and experience told, an overview of the cultural importance of the feast, and a description of foods that are associated with each occasion. Impressively, every recipe begins with a personal anecdote giving that impression Nigella didn't just throw it in the book, but is experienced with the recipe and has used it with success. Take her twist on the decadent Chocolate Guinness Cake for example: "I wanted to make a cream cheese frosting to echo the pale head that sits on top of a glass of stout. It's unconventional to add cream but it makes it frothier and lighter which I regard as aesthetically and gastronomically desirable." Who can argue? The cake is to die for. So next time you need to prepare a dinner party let the goddess be your guide, and remember: Keep the preparation simple, use easily available ingredients, and take time to enjoy your guests and your meal. Feast may not be the most advanced cookbook you will own, but if you want to create excellent food with relative ease in a short amount of time, you can not beat Nigella. --Rob Bracco

4 out of 5 stars Cold curdled vomit.......2007-10-04

Charly and his wife, Nigella, have acheived royalty here in the UK.

Lucky for us, she was raised in the shires on a diet of liver and cows milk. This has fortunately given her a fat lip and her jaw line is reported to be bigger then her shoulder blades.

She ransacks the refridgerator every night for bits of raw meat to feast on and feeds her husband homemade donuts which he endlessly vomits over time and time again.

So expect only the best from this beautiful woman. She certainly deserves his expertiZe in making everyone suffer like Charly's father, an isreali expert victorious in something or other.

Robocop hand slide.

4 out of 5 stars Review for the baking recipes.......2007-05-25

I have all but one of Nigella's cookbooks and this is my favorite. Since I bake rather than cook a lot this review focuses on the baking recipes. After having made a lot of the recipes from this book and her others I have been disappointed more than I thought I would be. Some of the recipes turn out very dry. But this book offers a unique layout by feast and/or holiday and some good, potentially great recipes if they were just tweaked or reworked a little- like the Chocolate Truffle Cake, Lemon Meringue Cake and Chocolate Gingerbread. The only problems are that some of the recipes are not exact enough or have some issues. For instance, with the truffle cake some people complained that the thin layer of cocoa sifted on top made them choke, but the cake and meringue crust were a hit. Also, she does not mention in this recipe that if you do not slowly add a little of the melted chocoalte to the cream them mix the rest in you can get little grainy chocolate pieces rather than a smooth base. The lemon meringue cake is also beautiful, but I would recommend just doing meringue disks, cream and curd and not the cake part since it is SO DRY. The chocolate gingerbread is utter bliss though. The pictures are utterly amazing and the stories behind them are fun to read.I also liked the way the book is set up kinda by holiday rather than the traditional appetizers, main course, desserts, etc. here little background jaunts over where she found or came up with the recipes is a pleasure to read and she is very descriptive in a very sensual way. For some this may be a little tiring. Another plus, this is a big cookbook with lots of recipes andd color pics, which is just great. It's a beautiful cookbook with fun, vibrant, sensual dishes. Overall, I'd recommend this book as her best work so far. If you are a some what experienced home baker able to see some minor flaws in recipes and be creative in re-working the recipes and enjoy being inspired by dishes I'd recommend picking this up.

5 out of 5 stars love her!.......2007-05-11

I love her books and would highly recommend each of them. I have three of her books and use Domestic Goddess the most, but I think this new one might be used plenty. I love reading them and keep them by my bedside. she is such a great writer besides giving all kinds of great tips and recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Nigella thinks up the best recipes for both sides of the pond.......2007-03-14

I love her holiday recipes...a mix of English and American customs. Nice to see someone in Europe celebrating American delights such as the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner along with pumpkins, cranberries, maple syrup, and other native food items of North America.

One let down was the recipe for the old fashioned chocolate cake. While it looked yummy when I baked it, it came out a little dry. Was worried about that when I noticed the very thick batter. Guess I will have to experiment with the recipe a little more...it was easy to make, though.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-25

This cookbook has many great recipes! I've made a lot of the dishes and everyone thinks I'm a gourmet cook, I guess I really just pick the best cookbooks. I have Forever Summer and I'm buying her other two books, they have so many recipes with normal foods, no wacky ingredients. You really can cook for a crowd without going broke or cook for just your family (they will love these recipes). My only warning is that you will have to have recipe cards ready when you have friends and family over when cooking from this book!

Book Description

Isreal's feasts are infinitely more important than just a series of cultural observances. These feasts are appointed by the Lord, and they are owned by the Lord. He calls them " my feasts." Together they form God's prophetic calendar, outlining the work of history's most important person...Jesus, the Messiah. As such, few themes are more timely or rewarding for God's people today.

The Feasts of the Lord covers all aspects of the biblical feasts...historical background, biblical observance, and prophetic significance. Yet, this book is not just another reference book on the feasts. It is written from the Hebrew Christian viewpoint, helping you to see the feasts through Jewish eyes.

The words of the Savior, His messianic claims, and Bible prophecy will all take on a rich, new relevance for you against the exciting backdrop of The Feasts of the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Information.......2007-02-16

The pages are falling out of my copy of "The Feasts of the Lord" simply because of how many times I have referred to it while preparing lessons or sermons. I am almost brought to tears every time I read of the literal meaning of the "afikomen" at Passover. I gave a copy of this book to a Jewish friend who helped me in proofing the manuscript of "Maccabee." Though "The Feasts of the Lord" demonstrates unapologetically the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament feasts, the book was well received. A big thank you to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible book.......2007-02-07

This is one of the most beautiful, high-quality books I own. The illustrations are amazing with rich colors and magnificent details. The writing is understandable and gives wonderful insight into Jewish history. This is an incredibly valuable tool for any serious Bible student and a treasure for any serious book collector.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening.......2007-01-13

This is one of my most treasured books. So wonderfully written, I felt like I was literally attending these feasts. Very eye-opening to end time events.

This is an excellent source and must reading for understanding God"s purposes im mankind's affairs. Further, it increases the understanding for the Christian in his roots and history. It connects all the dots to bridge, with understanding, the Jewish faith and the Christian faith to give clarity to the Christian belief system.

Portobello Mushrooms with Bubbling Pesto
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE

Serves 4
These mushrooms make a great appetizer or a delicious accompaniment for a summer meal alongside a steak. They work especially well if you are using your outdoor grill, but you can also broil them in the oven.

4 large portobello mushrooms
Olive oil for brushing
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 recipe Basil Pesto (p. 155)
4 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Trim the stems off the mushrooms. Brush mushrooms with olive oil and season lightly. Cook gill side down over medium coals or in the broiler for 5 minutes.

Turn the mushrooms over and spread a spoonful of pesto over the entire surface. Continue to cook for 10 minutes or until the mushrooms are very tender and the pesto is bubbling. Sprinkle the Parmesan on top of the pesto and return to broiler until cheese is melted and golden.

Dawn's Deviled Eggs
PRO/FATS AND VEGGIES -- LEVEL ONE

Makes 10
My good friend Barry Manilow has a wonderful cook named Dawn. These are her delicious deviled eggs. Her original recipe includes avocado, which makes the filling green. Try it that way for Level Two.

5 hard-boiled eggs, halved lengthwise
1 tablespoon minced scallion, white and light green parts
1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
Juice from 1 lime
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
red chili flakes for garnish

Remove the yolks from the whites. Set the whites aside. Mash the yolks in a bowl with a fork. Add the scallion, jalapeño, lime juice, mayonnaise, and salt. Add more mayonnaise to reach desired consistency. Mash with a fork until blended. Using a teaspoon, carefully stuff whites with yolk mixture, mounding the tops.
For extra heat, garnish with red chili flakes.
For Level Two
Add 1 whole mashed avocado to the egg yolk mixture.

5 out of 5 stars Suzanne Somer's Eat, Cheat and Melt the Fat Away.......2007-08-17

I will never look at a diet or food the same again!

Suzanne's book has been a huge Eye-Opener on educating me of the way in which we eat and how our body's respond. No wonder many are overweight. They just lack the Education.

Many Thanks to Suzanne, I can't wait to read her other books to learn more!

5 out of 5 stars Enlightened.......2007-02-03

Suzanne presents her ideas very clearly and her writing style is very easy to understand. There are some great recipes in this book and I will use it again and again!

5 out of 5 stars challange.......2006-08-11

This diet is a challange, you have to remember what you can and can not eat together. However, once you figure it out, it is a good diet. You never feel deprived, and are never hungry. The food is good and it is great to not have to count calories.
I have lost 10lbs in less than two weeks. One more thing, you do not have to give up desserts.

1 out of 5 stars ...A bit fiddly in my opinion..........2006-07-27

Well, my wife and I tried this diet plan, and lost a little, BUT...
CON: some of the ingredients and just a marketing ploy.
CON: It makes no mention of what to do if you're lactose intolerant.
CON: How do you thicken a sauce without cornstarch? Arrowroot? Pretty hard to locate in most grocery stores. File Gumbo? Makes a green gloppy mess out of your meal.
CON: Somewhat poorly written, more poorly compiled into a book, and the person or persons in charge of the index need to be educated (back to school with you now!) in compiling a COMPREHENSIVE index. Facts and figures are just too hard to find in this book.
PRO: SHe's probably rich from sales of this re-hash of Atkins, Sugar-busters, and Carb Addicts.
PRO: She's easier on the eyes than Atkins was!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ONE TO ADD TO COLLECTION.......2005-08-17
