good book.......2007-09-15
Has a lot of no noncence recipies .It is not flsahy but the recipies work .
A Let Down.......2007-08-29
i was hoping to expand on bread machine recipes from the booklet that came with my mahine. This book has tons of recipes, but they're all pretty much the same, just switches flavors. Imagine any kind of fruit and nut combo bread, and they put it in there.I was hoping for more variety as far as type o fbreads and dough. Plus they have alot of sourdough recipes, which takes three days to make sourdough, somethinig I'm not inclined to do. It was kind of a disappoinment. i did try the banana bread recipe, but it came out like reguar white bread with a banana flavor-not very good.
Big disappointment.......2007-08-16
So sorry I wasted my money on this book. The recipes are too large for my machine. Some of them sound good, but since I have a 1 pound machine and all the recipes are for 1 1/2 & 2 pound machines, they did not do me much good. I was not expecting the soup and sandwiches portion of the book, either. If I had wanted soup recipes, I would NOT have bought a cookbook about making bread. It is a very nice looking book, however and lays flat for easy reading. The recipes are easy to read, also. Format is good.
Well designed, but slightly complex recipes.......2007-07-11
I have no complaints about this recipe book except that many of the recipes are very complicated and not basic. For instance, there is no basic honey wheat bread recipe. Every recipe has on average about 15 different ingredients, which is not very basic and makes utilizing the recipes a bit tedious when you have to hunt down ingredients, like gluten, rye flour, etc.
So-So.......2007-06-09
The first time I tried a recipe from this book, I thought it had too much salt and not enough yeast. I was right! Since then, I have increased the yeast by about 1/3 and decreased the salt by about 1/3, and they are about right.
The alternating orange & blue type is supposed to make it easier to read, but it makes it harder. For some reason, you tend to skip the orange lines. Be careful not to leave out ingredients!
I do like that there are separate lists of ingredients for medium and large loaves of bread, and the recipes tell you which cycle is recommended for each recipe.
I wish there were some pictures of some of the recipes. No pictures makes it feel like a cheap, fund-raising textbook or something. It doesn't feel like a professional recipe book.

One of the better bread machine books.......2002-12-01
I love hot, freshly baked bread, but I seldom have the time for kneading, proofing, and all the rest, so several years ago I acquired a bread machine. Last Christmas, someone decided I needed to expand my baking repertoire and gave me this book. It starts with the real basics -- white bread, egg bread, whole wheat, rye -- and works up to more complex recipes like "Maple-Pecan Cornmeal Bread" and "Roasted Garlic and Stout Bread" (made with dark beer). Many of them use the machine for only part of the process and still require you to punch down, etc -- and, frankly, I got a machine so I wouldn't have to do that stuff! Nevertheless, there are some really good machine-only recipes, especially "Pepper-Parmesan Sourdough," "Poppy Seed-Cranberry Bread," which is great for brakfast, and "Garlic and Dried Tomato Bread," which is perfect with homemade minestrone. The instructions are easy and assorted helpful tips are scattered throughout.
Bread Machine Bonanza!.......2002-01-18
If your bread machine has been gathering dust, buy this book and plug in your machine. Jan Miller and Better Homes and Gardens have produced an excellent cookbook. It is easy to follow and has recipies for different quantities. A trip to the Health Food store is needed for some of the loaves, but in general you can make and bake immediately!

Bread Machine Magic Helpful Hints.......2001-04-09
Of all the bread machine cookbooks I own, this is the one I use the most. It's not just a cookbook, but full of hints and techniques that are useful for any machine. It tells of substitutes you can use. Such as applesauce for fats, etc. And the recipes are foolproof, as are any of the recipes in the "Magic" series. A must have for a beginning or advanced bread machine baker.
The tops for bread machine bread.......2000-10-06
I am not a bread maker, but my son loves bread so I decided it would be worth it to get a bread machine. I was pretty lukewarm about the loaves it was turning out until I got this book. This book is amazing, just knowing about the "peek and poke" method helped my bread 100%. The recipes are fantastic and I can guarantee my loaves will turn out 98% of the time. I also own the "More Bread Machine Magic" which is fantastic, but if you just get one book get this one. For someone that didn't know beans about bread I can now turn out beautiful and tasty loaves. If you are an experienced bread maker you may already know a lot of the info in this book, but for the novice or previously disappointed bread machine owner this book is tops.
Don't waste money on other books.......2000-02-27
This little book is small but believe me it is one of the *best* books on baking bread in a bread machine you will ever buy, especially considering the price. The authors have covered everything here, and then some. A must have for the adventurous, and for the beginner too!
A Bread Machine Must Have.......1999-12-13
In the 3 years I've owned my bread machine, I seldom used it. That was because everything I'd made was disappointing. Since buying this book the machine now gets used every other day. The recipes are wonderful & turn out perfect every time. The book tells you how to convert your favorites (which is great if you're an old do-it-all-by-hand bread baker like me). And the substitutions section is really helpful if you'd like to modify the recipes or use your favorite ingredients. Everyone I know has an unused bread machine sitting around & since I've told them, enthusiastically, of the success I've had using the book, they're using their machines again (and asking me what the book says!). Guess I'll be ordering more copies as gifts!
IF YOU OWN A BREAD MACHINE, YOU CAN NOT DO WITHOUT THIS BOOK.......1999-07-13
WHEN I PURCHASED MY BREAD MACHINE I READ THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET, AND I HAD DOZENS OF QUESTIONS IT JUST DIDN'T ADDRESS. THE HELPFUL HINTS BOOK ANSWERED EVERY QUESTION I HAD. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW MACHINE. CHAPTER ONE-THE VARIOUS BREAD MACHINE FEATURES-ALSO INCLUDED THE 800 NUMBER OF THE COMPANY WHO MADE THE MACHINE I WAS INTERESTED IN. I TELEPHONED THEM AND ASKED ALL THE QUESTIONS I WOULDN'T HAVE KNOWN TO ASK WITHOUT THE HELPFUL HINTS BOOK. I PURCHASED THE NEW MACHINE WITH CONFIDENCE; KNOWING THAT IT HAD ALL THE FEATURES I WANTED. IF YOU HAVE A BREAD MACHINE YOU CAN NOT AFFORD TO BE WITHOUT THIS BOOK.

Our popular waffle book now includes recipes for the current rage, the pizzelle–that crisp, cookie-like cousin of the waffle. Make pizzelles on a waffle-type iron and serve them flat, rolled, stacked or filled. More than 100 recipes for waffle batters and toppings, and pizzelle recipes with and without fillings are found here.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of hard to find reciepes.......2007-08-28
This has lots of hard to find pizzelle receipes, plus lots of fillings. I don't make waffles, but the pizzelle reciepes are worth buying the book.
$8.95 for more choices than Dorie Greenspan's waffle book.......2007-06-15
I already own Dorie Greenspan's waffle book but this has more recipes and I just got a waffle cone maker so this felt like a worthwhile purchase.
Too many choices, all so tasty!.......2006-09-20
Plan what you want to make before hand for you could get stuck for quite some time just trying to decide which of the tasty recipes to follow! This book, as those who have tried the Nitty Gritty books will know, is packed with recipes and variations on the classic, now somewhat boring, breakfast staple. On top of that, there are numerous pizzelle recipes (similar to a waffle cone for those that don't know), which I have not found in abundance anywhere else. There are also lots of recipes for toppings and syrups for the waffles and fillings for the pizzelles so you are not just left with plain old Mrs. Butterworth's! Great addition for anyone who loves breakfast foods and wants to expand from the package mixes!*** I have to add that we are now in love with the eggnog waffles! Sounds odd but they are totally good!

I had never baked bread or used a bread machine before I got this book. I have made the white, french, honey wheat, oatmeal and dinner roll recipies and each of them turned out great!
I recommend this book to anyone regardless of age because it is well written, fun and easy to understand.
(Thanks Ann)

One of the most beautiful cookbooks on bread baking..........2006-12-01
One of the most striking things about this book is it's well laid out design. Every recipe is easy to read and prepare. I wish more cookbooks would adapt a similar layout...
Yes, the liquid to water ratios are not always right, but with the variety of different bread machines out there, it is almost impossible to put in a recipe. This is also due to the fact that different flours absorb different amounts of water due to their variations in milling, age and variety. Be prepared to always finetune the dough consistency in your machine by adding small amounts of water.
This book is perfectly suited as an introduction into the art of baking bread and as a creative idea generator for new and unusual loafs. After kneading in the machine I have sometimes baked the breads in my home oven with even better results!
The Complete Guide to Bread Machine Baking.......2005-09-26
I love this book. The recipes given are for both 1 1/2 & 2 pound capacity, which gives the user a choice. The book is easy to read and offers special instructions for the more elaborate recipes. Most of the recipes use ingredients that most homes have on hand on a daily/weekly basis... there are not a lot of unique ingredients that you need to make a special trip to the grocery store for. I have not experienced one bad recipe and I've made nearly all of them. I usually bake at least two loaves; bringing one in to work to share... it disappears within a half hour.
Thank you for this book!
Don't buy it!!.......2005-02-09
None of the recipes turned out from this cookbook and I have a great machine. They were all small loaves and some of them tasted nasty.
Wonderful, simple overview, ok recipies.......2004-07-22
I've made a small variety of different kinds of bread using the enclosed instructions that came with my bread machine. I've also noticed some inconsistancy from loaf to loaf. I've made a lot of very dense small loafs that tasted great but where pretty small and heavy. Now this is not inconsistancy from the machine but in the ingredience and the differences with the recipies and things you're supposed to conscious of when everything goes together.
This book provides a great overview on machine bread making with photos and explanations as to the how and why's of dough consistancy, what happens if your bread does or does not do certain things and how to adjust the ingredience. This has greatly helped me understand what I was doing and how to bring some consistancy into my bread making.
The recipies are ok. I actually only stick to making one kind of bread day in and day out. Although I have ventured off and tried some more of the interesting variety with good results. Mostly I've used this to help me understand the basics which I've applied to other recipies.
Best book I've found.......2004-04-25
This book is by far my favorite book. I especially enjoy all the shaped breads and dough recipes which are finished outside the bread machine. You can do more than bake a standard loaf with this book.

Best Bread Book!.......2006-10-26
Got this book for a Christmas present with my breadmaker. If you own a breadmaker, you need to have it too. The recipes are easy and very tasty. It contains the basics, some fancy loaves, and some specialty items like cinnamon rolls and different pizza doughs. A must have!
Excellent book!.......2005-11-10
I must concur with the other reviewers. The recipes in this book always turn out great. I never have to adjust liquids/flour or anything. When I get creative with my own ingredients, I use basic recipe amounts from this book and modify flours, sugars, spices, etc. I can always count on these recipes to be right.
Great results each time!.......2003-04-08
I recently purchased a bread machine (Williams Sonoma) and wanted to try different recipes. I bought a book "Bread Machine Baking" which had recipes scaled for my machine. I also found this one on Amazon and bought it too.
I have found that the recipes in this book actually turn out better, even with the lesser amount of yeast used. Each loaf has risen evenly and nicely, creating a beautiful and delicious loaf of bread.
I also prefer the way this book is laid out. It is spiral bound which allows it to lie flat, it has a good table of contents and the recipes are easy to read at a glance.
I highly recommend this book. Try the Egg and Oatmeal breads. So good and easy to make with ingredients you have on hand.
A great basic book for bread machines.......2002-05-13
Clear directions and type-size for recipes, extremely well laid-out, and very good recipes throughout make this book one of my personal favorites for the bread machine.
Better than other recipes.......2002-04-24
I about had it with my bread machine until I got this book. Every recipe I have tried is great. They say it's because other recipes call for too much yeast. Their proportions are a little different and it really works. Buy it and you'll have fresh bread in the house all the time. The Egg Bread is the best!

Yummy Recipes!!!.......2003-08-26
I have tried at least half of the recipes in this book and have had excellent results every time. There is a great variety of all different kinds of bread. I highly recommend it!
Customer Reviews:
Tasty bread recipes you probably won't find anywhere else.......2007-09-16
My mom gave me this book with a used bread machine and both have held up great. I love that the recipes are experimental and he tried all kinds of flours, grains and flavors. Some favorites are Graham Cracker Bread, Peanut Butter Bread, Maple Oat Bread, Oatmeal Bread, just to name a few! When I started having problems with sugar and carbs, I found the Steel Cut Oat Bread and Garbanzo Bread to be lifesavers. I've had little trouble with having the recipes turn out right, unless I've made a mistake, although the Steel Cut Oat Bread has taken lots of tweaking. I never cook in the machine and wish there was some discussion of that in the book (I usually try 375deg for 30mins), but that's a minor issue. It would be nice too if the recipes were sized for whole packets of yeast, but again, minor problem. I was hoping to find that there was another fantastic Langer bread cookbook on here, but I guess after the "Complete Bread Machine Bakery Book", that's asking a lot! For anyone who likes experimenting with their food and love bread, this is the book for you.
Instant Favorites from Langer (again)!.......2003-12-16
Of all our bread machine books, Langer's has provided more favorites than any other. Who'd have thought that semolina flour would make such great bread --no one could resist the sesame-semolina bread. A review here has been delayed for too long because each bread I've tried has been an instant favorite leaving little motivation for trying more recipes.
So far I've never had a failure with a recipe, although I've needed to make an adjustment now and then, such as adding a bit of liquid to offset the dryness of flours in our dry air, or replacing a tablespoon or two of the flour with pure gluten flour to compensate for the weak flours found in Western markets. Part of learning to use a bread machine is learning to make such adjustments and to evaluate the dough while it's being kneaded by the machine (there's an excellent discussion in an early chapter) --it's a pity so many books pretend that good bread will always follow a by-the-numbers adherence to the instructions. My one criticism of this book for a beginner is that suggestions for evaluating a dough and making adjustments are too often separated from recipes.
I don't know that I'd recommend _any_ book to be used alone by a breadmaking or bread machine beginner, including the manuals that come with the machines, but Langer's book will certainly be one of the most useful adjuncts to the manuals. It's become my favorite of the several books I've received since being given a bread machine, and I'm giving a copy of it with every bread machine I buy for a gift-- in the hope that Langer's immense appreciation of bread and freewheeling love of experimentation will sustain a beginner's breadmaking beyond the manuals and beyond the first disappointments (inevitable to any bread machine beginner regardless of the recipes he uses). The array of European-style breads and especially rye breads is especially tempting. The book goes far beyond table breads with many sweet yeast and quick breads and other fascinating concoctions.
As always, Langer instructions are clear, the asides (especially the descriptions of bread experiments which didn't make the book) entertaining, and the illustrations by Susan McNeill pleasing and encouraging. There is an extra: somehow Langer has persuaded his publisher to achieve the perfect cookbook format: spiral bound pages within a hard board cover. It's the best of two worlds: the widely wire-bound pages open perfectly flat and the cover protects the pages --and there is a spine for the title so you don't lose the book on the shelves.
If you know your bread machine well, this book's a gem.......2003-08-29
I signed out a copy of this book at my local library, and I regretted taking it back! I can't wait to receive my own copy. Since manufactured breads (all of them) include High Fructose Corn Syrup (which the body stores immediately as fat), my husband and I have decided to put our bread machine to work, and we have made dozen of whole grain loaves that rivel the very best store-bought! Mr. Langer's book opened up yet another chapter for me, providing outstanding recipes that are, granted, experimental, but definitely tastey and well-tested--from breads to biscottis to cakes. Each and every recipe I tried from this book worked beautifully.
If you know your machine well, you'll find this book a gem. If you still struggle with your machine, spend some time with the breadbook that came with the unit first. Since each machine brand is a bit different, it's worth the time to get to know its quirks. Once that's done, the world of breads is all yours. And this book is a terrific atlas!
Is it me, my bread machine or this book?.......1999-10-17
Maybe it's me, maybe it's my bread machine, or maybe it's this book, but I've yet to produce a bread that is good enough to repeat. Although I still haven't given up all hopes for the recipes in this book, I'm not impressed and I find myself using my other bread machine books first. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered to read through the stories, lengthy descriptions and repetitive instructions just to get to the actual recipe. I prefer simplicity and easy to read recipes, especially when I bake my breads first thing in the morning.
Not happy with any of the recipes.......1999-08-17
so far the breads using Canadian floors have been very unsucessful
