Pan-fried Shrimp with Green Curry Cashew Sauce

Serves 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes

You can purchase bottled Thai green curry sauce in most supermarkets, but this recipe proves how quick and easy it is to make your own. Refrigerate any leftover sauce, covered, for up to 3 days.

1 slice (1/4 inch thick) peeled fresh ginger
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons roasted unsalted cashews
1/3 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/4 cup packed cilantro leaves
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon curry powder
Coarse salt and fresh ground pepper
1 1/2 pounds peeled and deveined large shrimp
2 tablespoons olive oil

1 In a food processor, pulse the ginger until finely chopped. Add the 3/4 cup cashews; process until smooth, 2 to 3 minutes.
2 Add the yogurt, cilantro, sugar, and curry powder; season with salt. Process until incorporated, 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed. Transfer to a serving bowl; sprinkle with the remaining cashews.
3 Season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the shrimp; cook until opaque throughout, 2 to 3 minutes. Repeat with the remaining tablespoon oil and remaining shrimp. Serve the shrimp with the sauce.

Book Description

No matter how busy you are, at the end of the day you want fresh, flavorful meals that are easy to prepare. And you want lots of choices and variations—recipes that call for your favorite foods and take advantage of excellent (and readily available) ingredients. In the first book from the award-winning magazine Everyday Food, you’ll find all of that: 250 simple recipes for delicious meals that are quick enough to make any day of the week.

Because a change in weather affects how we cook as much as what we cook, the recipes in Everyday Food are arranged by season. For spring, you’ll find speedy preparations for main-course salads, chicken, and poached salmon that minimize time spent at the stove; summer features quick techniques for grilling the very best burgers and kabobs as well as no-cook pasta sauces; for fall, there are braised meats and hearty main-course soups; and winter provides new takes on rich one-dish meals, roasts and stews, and hearty baked pastas. Finally, a chapter on basics explains how to make year-round staples such as foolproof roast chicken, risotto, couscous, and chocolate sauce.

Designed in a contemporary and easy-to-read format, Everyday Food boasts lush, full-color photography and plenty of suggestions for substitutions and variations. With Everyday Food, even the busiest on-the-go cook can look forward to meals that bring freshness, nutrition, and a range of flavors to dinner all week long.

4 out of 5 stars nice variety.......2007-10-11

I enjoy how the book is sectioned by season, and also the variety of recipes included. I have found several things to try from the book, however I seem to find more in the Everyday Food Magazines than from the book. If I had it to do over I would have skipped on the book and bought a subscription to the magazine instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I've ever used!!!.......2007-10-10

First of all let me just say, I LOVE this cookbook! All of the recipes are easy to make and use common ingredients. It's also great that every recipe has an accompanying picture so you can see what it's supposed to turn out like. And, it's broken up by season so that you're using the freshest ingredients available. I've made about 1/3 of the recipes so far in the book and only came across 1 I didn't like. I'm buying this book for everyone in my family as a holiday gift- it's perfect!!

5 out of 5 stars perfect title.......2007-09-24

This is precisely as billed...great food fast. Clear directions, and lovely pictures of the finished product. Healthy menus that are easily prepared. Love this book, and am giving it as gifts this Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Exceeded My Expectations.......2007-09-23

Maybe not everyone would love the book for the reasons I do, but I really appreciate the vast number of interesting, tasty vegetable dishes using very common market items. There are beef and pork dishes, of course, but those didn't interest me nearly as much as the vegetables, soups, seafood and chicken--which have all been excellent and easy, as promised.

There's a lot in this book--along with some helpful tips at the end, and gorgeous photographs. I was really happy that its not all updated "classic American comfort food" or some variation therein that overwhelms good flavor combinations with too much butter, cream, and salt. These meals have a freshness and flavor that will give them wide appeal, and the preparations are straightforward and easy to make all year long. A very pleasant surprise.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2007-09-14

Good recipes, but I seem to prefer my Every Day Recipes subscription.
I've made a few recipes and they're very good. It's organized by season which is nice. Somehow, I thought I'd like having one big volume better, but I miss my bi-monthly recipes more. They felt more inspirational and I can't tell you why....

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat.

Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies. "Eating in the United States should no longer be a form of high-risk behavior," he writes. Where to begin? Ask yourself, is the true cost of having it "your way" really worth it? --Lesley Reed

Book Description

Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning.

Schlosser's myth-shattering survey stretches from California's subdivisions, where the business was born, to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike, where many of fast food's flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate.

5 out of 5 stars A hard look at not only fast food, but the beef industry.......2007-10-10

WOW...
And I don't say that so much because of the things this books brings to light about the fast food industry. I actually say it because of all the horrifying things I've learned about the BEEF industry! I never would have imagined what goes into raising cattle (the disgusting things they are fed), killing them and then turning them into meat. The dangers that these processes bring upon us as consumers of this beef (mad cow etc.) And the fact that the government is barely, if at all, regulating this?! Because they are "all in bed" with the beef industry! WOW. I am seriously considering from now on buying organic beef. I hope that in the next ten years that this government will start putting in place some better protection for us as beef consumers, at the time this book was written they were not allowed to re-call beef, nor were they able to inspect the factories....definitely a book worth reading and hopefully it continues to get noticed, make waves and bring upon some change.

As for the reading, it was dry at times, but for the most part interesting. I think it was very well written. It was helpful how it was broken down into chapters dealing with different aspects- made it easy to follow the argument and then grasp the sum-up of it all at the end, and how each part ties together. From the chapters on how fastfood/McDonalds got it's start, to the look at "why the fries taste so good", or what's in the beef, to the look at the meat processing plants...the author certainly seemed to do his homework, because he was nothing if not thorough. If Schlosser were to write a follow up, years down the road, I'd definitely read and will certainly recommend this to friends!

5 out of 5 stars Frightening Truths.......2007-10-09

Schlosser's exposé of the fast food industry makes for terrifying reading. Now that I am aware of the appalling corporate trade practices, I have been sure to avoid McDonald's (except in order to get hold of the complete Happy Meal collections of Hannah Montana and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- the mantelpiece would have seemed bare without them). However, it is equally worrying to learn about the produce found in major supermarkets. Chicken is frequently known to contain as much as 40% additives. If you ask me, 'chicken' should be just that and it should NOT involve added protein. It is for this reason that I must politely decline Uncle Bruce's invitations to dinner. Since I caught a glimpse of him through the kitchen window (during the final throes of 'injecting' a chicken) I have felt little urge to join him for a Sunday dinner.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Food Nation - Eye opening read.......2007-10-04

This is a very well researched and written tome that I would recommend to anyone interested in how big agribusiness works. Cynical by nature, I'm even more so after reading the book, especially when it comes to politics and big business. If you read nothing else, check out the chapter on the slaughterhouse. Egad.

I look forward to reading Schlosser's other book, Refer Madness.

4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2007-09-29

After reading the book, I became so appalled at the thought of eating fast food again. It's not just about health either. The sad and horrific stories about how factory workers were treated and their working conditions will wake you up. One often knows how bad fast food is, but until you read this, you won't really know just how BAD it is.

5 out of 5 stars Alarming!.......2007-09-28

I could not put the book down. I found it so intriguing that I had to buy another copy to pass among my family and friends. I was, like the rest of the people who have read this, shocked to know exactly how the large agricultural companies operate and the feebleness with which the FDA and USDA operate.
Being a government employee myself I feel the massive budget cuts and have experienced the mounds of work displaced to employees already overwhelmed. There's no way to catch up or catch anything that is not a blatant violation. So, I'm not surprised to find out that the majority of the time the agricultural business is left to police itself.
I was skeptical by the amount of negative information in the book and wondered if this could indeed really be happening. The author, however, delivers facts and names which when investigated would have to be accurate for those details to be published -otherwise this book would have been shut down before publishing.
That said I feel the book must be on the mark. Knowing that I am more cautious, than ever, about where I purchase my food. I could not stand fast food before I read the book, which gave me relief that not eating junk food is sensible advice. Knowing what I know now I choose to cook more meals at home. I have banned the supermarket for most items that I can purchase locally -meats and vegetables. Trust in the man at Winn Dixie or Food Lion is gone.
My advice; educate yourself. Do not let this be the only source of information about the food industry. Buy locally if you can. Make a friend of your local butcher or farmer's market. Purchase in-season items -this reduces the miles your food has traveled which lessens the environmental impact of what you are eating. It'll guarantee a better quality product too. Know where your food is coming from.

Book Description

Kids love fast food. And the fast food industry definitely loves kids. It couldn't survive without them. Did you know that the biggest toy company in the world is McDonald's? It's true. In fact, one out of every three toys given to a child in the United States each year is from a fast food restaurant. Not only has fast food reached into the toy industry, it's moving into our schools. One out of every five public schools in the United States now serves brand name fast food. But do kids know what they're eating? Where do fast food hamburgers come from? And what makes those fries taste so good? When Eric Schlosser's best-selling book, Fast Food Nation, was published for adults in 2001, many called for his groundbreaking insight to be shared with young people. Now Schlosser, along with co-writer Charles Wilson, has investigated the subject further, uncovering new facts children need to know. In Chew On This, they share with kids the fascinating and sometimes frightening truth about what lurks between those sesame seed buns, what a chicken "nugget" really is, and how the fast food industry has been feeding off children for generations. Featuring cover art by M. Wartella.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids..........2007-09-30

I picked up this book because I wanted to get Schlosser's information without wading through his voluminous Fast Food Nation. While targeted at a younger audience, Chew on This has enough information to be an informative read for adults.

Conspiracy theorists will want to gloss over the section about the virtues of labor unions, the use of satellite imagery to locate future restaurants, and the multimillion dollar ad campaigns that target children. Schlosser does have an axe to grind. But as he points out: eating habits have changed more in the last 30 years than they have in the last 30,000 years. The chicken nugget has only existed since 1983.

I must be jaded because I didn't find the information that shocking. Fast food is, well...fast food!; a snack on the run, not dinner with the kids. And yes they are run by billion-dollar coroporations; not mom and pop businesses.

Why do the fries taste so good? They contain beef fat. What happens when you drink 25 colas a week? Your teeth fall out. What happens when fast food is served in public high schools? 40% of the student body is classifed as overweight. What happens to an obese, inactive, 16-year old teenager who eats 2 Big Macs for lunch everyday? He suffers a heart attack.

A recommended entertaining, quick read.

3 out of 5 stars Chew on this worth reading....if.......2007-09-11

Chew on this is worth reading if only to learn a bit about the fast food industry. I skipped the chapter on beef, as I don't eat beef anyhow. The book didn't make me give up going out all together, but it did make me selective. I no longer go to the big chains. As with any book of this type, there are counter accounts to what it has to say. Believe what you want. I believe the book a bit more than the corporations.

4 out of 5 stars Chew on This, A Review.......2007-09-09

When summer comes I like to pluck a few books off my shelf and read them. One of them with a review. Some parts have been excluded for some other reasons:

My choice; Chew on This, the Eric Schlosser book that talks about fast food. Reading it made me thank my mother (as preposterous as it seems) for never taking me to one of those places. The facts made my stomach forget it was hungry and my gag reflex to kick in. Horrific statements such as what makes the drinks pink (did I mention I hate bugs?) and the ingredients in the milk shakes that I could barely comprehend, much less pronounce. The author's purpose, I think was to educate people about fast food. I did like the part when he talked about a school in California that cooked their own food from vegetables in their garden. I found the people fighting against fast food industries commendable for their work and I liked to hear their stories.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Look at Fast Food the Same Way Again.......2007-09-07

Did you know that if you take the 13 million hamburgers that Americans eat every year and put them in a straight line, they could circle the earth more than 32 times?

Did you know that chickens are sometimes thrown against walls as a form of slaughter?

Startling facts such as these appear in "Chew on This," which weaves historical summaries, shocking statistics, and moving profiles of teens whose lives have been tainted by the fast food industry.

The authors reveal facts that big businesses will not, such as what makes fast food manufacturing methods so unhealthy, how fast food workers are taken advantage of, and how shifty advertising techniques are used to tempt kids to eat junk food.

After reading "Chew on This," you won't look at fast food the same way again. Some of you may even decide to boycott these businesses.

5 out of 5 stars Read This!.......2007-07-05

The fast food companies target your children with their advertising, so why not give your child the opportunity to hear the other side of the story. And when your teen is finished reading the book, you should take the opportunity to read it as well.

Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson make some excellent points about the fast food industry and how they have built customer loyalty through appealing to what children want. If children endlessly beg their parents to go to these fast food places, parents will give in. Fast food industries have built a bazillion dollar industry by brainwashing your child. Take your kid back! (And while you're at it, you can eat healthier too.)

My 13 year old recently read this book. She was horrified to know what kind of conditions the animals live in before they are slaughtered for your "Happy Meal." She read with disgust about the crushed insects that make your drink pink. After reading this book, she has become much more health conscious, and I don't hear a single request to eat at a fast food restaurant.

Then, I read the book. I was additionally horrified to learn about the conditions workers in third world countries endure while producing those cheap plastic toys for spoiled American children. I was also disheartened by the way the fast food industry weilds power in schools by funding badly needed school programs while monopolizing food choices within schools. Schools are caught in a Catch 22 of sorts as they decide whether or not to serve unhealthy cheeseburgers and fries for lunch, or give up programs that benefit children. Schools shouldn't have to choose between those things. At the end of the book, the authors point out that we can help our children to have better choices. Schools in Berkeley, CA have school gardens and suppliers of organic foods. The children learn to garden and cook their own meals. I wish my daughter's school did this.

In my opinion, our nation of spoiled children want toys with their food, and play places where they can play instead of eat their food. (If you could call a cheeseburger, fries and soda "food.")

And, while kids play with cheap plastic toys (for about 15 minutes and then never again) and jump around in filthy ball pits, adults sit at the tables eating the unwanted kids meal along with the Big Mac they already ate. No wonder people are putting on the pounds.

We can all benefit from reading books like this and educating ourselves on the real harm being done in this country by overly processed, trans fat laden "fast food." Make a better choice for yourself and your children. This book will inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars Very Soothing Voice and Music.......2007-06-11

I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.

Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-28

After having so much success with Trevor's cd "Your Power Within" I had to try "Relax Your Way to Thin." I've lost 17 pounds so far and it is fantastic! I've never wanted to say I'm on a "diet" and I didn't really want to change my eating habits. But, after listening to the cd, my whole attitude about food and healty eating habits started changing. It made me realize that I wasn't denying myself anything by eating healthier, I was actually giving myself more. The weight started coming off, I'm feeling great and I'm sleeping soundly. Awesome CD, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to loose weight.

2 out of 5 stars Didnt work.......2007-01-12

This didnt work for me. Maybe because everytime I turned it on I fell asleep. Good way to fall asleep if you are having trouble. Bad way to lose weight.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed!!.......2006-11-06

I had gone to a Hypnotherapist before to lose weight and did not have much luck. However, I decided to try Trevor's method...and it works!! My eating habits changed dramatically after only listening to the cd twice. It is the most relaxing experience I have ever had. This cd allows you to fall asleep, so I listen to it while I am going to bed. It says that even if you do fall asleep your sibconcious will receive the messages that Trevor sends, without a doubt, it does! I am really amazed by this cd! Book Description

"The book provides a theoretical and analytical framework that both reflects reality and helps college students understand the reality of the world in which they grew up, live in, and are likely to continue to experience not only in the United States but throughout the world."

                                                                     -Celestino Fernandez, University of Arizona

"I love this book; it is a contemporary classic. . . . I would certainly use this book in an undergraduate theory course."

-Philip Cohen, University of California, Irvine

"From my viewpoint, what I need is a book that spurs debate and stimulates critical thinking among my students, particularly on the societal consequences of rationalization. Ritzer’s book does exactly this. The strengths of the book are its connection to "real life" as well as the possibility of using it as a platform for discussing business practices seen from the viewpoint of citizens, rather than managers. . . . I would surely adopt its new edition and use it in a wide range of courses."

-Angelo Fanelli, University of Florida, Gainesville

"I use this book in an introductory level social problems and public policy course. The book is also used in my department in many sections of introduction to sociology. It works well in introductory level courses. . . . It is a good book and has been a great teaching tool. I find the book helps students to see rationalized environments where they could not see them before. Vision is a good thing. . . . the book still has a long shelf life ahead."

                                                                               -Kurt F. Cylke, SUNY Geneseo

"This is an important book. Its wide recognition is well deserved. Its central strength is the clarity and brevity with which it makes accessible an extraordinarily important and complex process shaping the postmodern world."

                                                                -Peter Hoffman, Loyola Marymount University

"I am impressed with the amount of examples the author has gathered from around the world for the book. Examples are current, interesting, and illustrative. They mesh well with the text and help enormously in explicating complex processes underlying McDonaldization."

-Victor Shaw, California State University, Northridge

One of the most popular Sociology books of all time has been thoroughly updated to examine how McDonaldization has roared into the 21st century. The McDonaldization of Society, Revised New Century Edition discusses how McDonaldization and the broader process of globalization (in a new Chapter 8), are spreading more widely and more deeply into various social institutions such as education, medicine, the criminal justice system, and more. This Revised New Century Edition provides many new, relevant examples from recent events and contemporary popular culture, including the ever-increasing global proliferation of McDonald’s and other fast food franchises, shopping malls, and similar commercial entities. Their impact is examined in the post-September 11, 2001 era.

The McDonaldization of Society is ideal for use in a wide range of higher-education courses and will be of equal value to anyone interested in social criticism. The book offers readers new insight into the society they are constructing around them and will be sure to spark debate in and out of the classroom.

I am reading this book for my Sociology class and it has completely changed the way I look at society. A must read

5 out of 5 stars The grobalization of nothing.......2006-11-02

McDonalds's is G. Ritzer's perfect paradigm for explaining the actual structure of our planet. He has built his portrait on Max Weber's rationalization concept. This concept expresses man's search for the optimum means to a given end by rules, regulations and larger social structures. Its driving force is economics (capitalism).
This concept affects virtually all aspects of our society all over the world: work, education, health care, leisure, transport, sports, politics, justice, religion and the family. It shows a planet centered on rational consumerism.
The ingredients of the system are efficiency, calculability, predictability and nonhuman technologies for controlling people. It was greatly helped by technological breakthroughs like automobiles, TV, the computer, internet and lasers (DVD) and by fundamental changes in Western societies (single parent families, working women, higher mobility, increasing disposable income, time savings, mediatization and advertising).

But Max Weber foresaw also the lurking irrationalities, the dehumanization and homogenization, which expressed themselves in environmental and health problems (air pollution), McJobs (disenchantment, false friendliness), traffic jams, bureaucratization.
McDonaldization produces the perfect way of life for people who, as Nietzsche said, use the wrong conjugation: they don't live, they are lived.

For G. Ritzer, McDonaldization is the `grobalization of nothing': a world dominated by the imperialistic ambitions of nations, corporations and organizations, whose main intent is growth of their power, influence and profits. `Nothing' is a social form that is generally centrally conceived, controlled and comparatively devoid of distinctive substantive content.'

The author would like to see a more deMcDonaldizated world (see the many recommendations at the end of the book), but McDonaldization is still on the march, certainly in developing countries.

This book is a crucial, superbly documented, text for all those who want to understand the world we live in.
A must read.

4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening Experience.......2006-04-29

This book was required reading for an undergraduate sociology course for Human Relations majors (sociology course for sociology/education/psychology). It was an eye opening experience because the readers/continuous learner is encouraged to step inside the corporate framework that directly affects our ideas and acceptance of an ideology of busines, etc based on the McDonald's corporate culture.

Our class found it powerful reading and most were challenged to think about and ask, "what are we really doing to improve our lives, culture and global community?"

4 out of 5 stars McDonald's: Just another Bureaucracy .......2006-01-13

In his book, "The McDonaldization of Society", George Ritzer writes of McDonald's as a catalyst that provoked rapid and significant changes throughout the fast-food industry and in multinational businesses, changes that directly and circuitously affected people and society in positive and negative ways. However, Ritzer contends that McDonaldization has contributed more negatively to society than positively. It is rare that such an erudite study can also be so readable by the public.

Many people can easily recall the long lasting societal effects of such creations as the fax, the World Wide Web and email, the effects of global warming, the passing of NAFTA and so on, but few have considered the influence of a fast-food franchise such as McDonald's. When people think of McDonald's, they envision the fast-food giant of the industry - serving up their famous "Big Mac", fries, and milkshake. Few people can imagine of the impact of McDonald's upon society, but in "The McDonaldization of Society", George Ritzer illustrates these changes in a clear concise examination of this phenomenon.

Ritzer writes of the many industries that have strived to emulate McDonald's success by utilizing their system of operation, companies like Pizza Hut, Dominos, Wendy's, Toys R Us, Eye Masters, USA Today and other newspapers (McPapers) and so on. There are a host of other industries that have fashioned themselves after the McDonald's mold, like McDoctors, Books-on-Tapes, McBanks, ATMs, and so forth. These and many other industries are viewed as direct by-products of McDonaldization. However, Ritzer makes it clear that Ray Kroc (McDonald's CEO) neither created the "McDonald's principles nor the idea of a franchise. Ray Kroc's genius was in the way he combined many of the ideas of bureaucracy, the McDonald brothers, and other franchises into the McDonald's franchise of today.

The central theme in Ritzer's book is the "enabling" and "constraining" affects of McDonaldization and how this phenomenon has changed parts of society both in the United States and abroad - from private and public industries to its citizenry. Ritzer contends that McDonald's success is a direct outcome of their implementation of a kind of bureaucratic system that involves the concepts of "efficiency, quantification, predictability, and control" (rules and regulations). This system, according to Ritzer, results in striking changes throughout society, dehumanization of employees and to a great extent even control over consumers. Ritzer considers these four components to be at the heart of McDonaldization and therefore covers the concepts in separate detailed chapters.

Ritzer views McDonald's as a metaphor for bureaucracy with all the benefits and drawbacks of bureaucracies. Bureaucracies function under the same principles of efficiency, quantification, predictability, and control and in Ritzer's view "[w]e must therefore look at McDonaldization as both "enabling" and "constraining." McDonaldized systems enable people to do things they were unable to do in the past (work faster, efficiently, have more free time, etc.). However, these same systems also keep individuals from doing things that they would otherwise do (be creative, have quality time....). George Ritzer writes that "[t]he success of the McDonald's model suggests that many people have come to prefer a world in which there are few surprises". McDonaldization is a "double-edged" sword working for and against people.

Ritzer is more concerned with the social impact of McDonaldization than he is in documenting the history of McDonald's as the goliath of the fast-food industry. Nevertheless, in presenting his case, against McDonaldization, Ritzer succeeds in debunking many of the misconceptions concerning Ray Kroc and McDonald's. He reminds his reader that Mac and Dick McDonald were the originators of McDonald's. It was the McDonald's brothers - not Ray Kroc ? that created the concept of assembly line procedures, cheap prices, short menus, and the idea of fast food.

The reader will learn that bureaucracies function under the concept of "rationality" and how this concept can be found in virtually all forms of bureaucracies. Ritzer also posits that systems based on rationality invariably result in irrationality (all bureaucracies suffer from the "irrationality of rationality") and he links this concept to McDonaldization. Ritzer conveys his concerns with the role played by bureaucratic systems that affect and/or limit interaction among, individual, how they create a robotic state in workers, how bureaucracies stump creativity, freedom of choice and expression and so on.

As support for his contentions on bureaucracies, Ritzer discusses Max Weber's writings on bureaucracies. McDonald's is amplification and an extension of Max Weber's theory of rationalization. Ritzer makes the connection between efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control to Max Weber's theory of bureaucracy in which bureaucracies function by Weber's concept of formal rationality. According to George Ritzer and Max Weber, economics may be at the forefront of all bureaucracies (rational systems) in one form or another; this is Ritzer's opinion concerning McDonaldization.

"The McDonaldization of Society" envelopes concepts in sociology, psychology, politics, and economics, such as, role playing, rituals, behavior modification, reward and punishment, dehumanization, hierarchies, deviancy, rational irrational systems, formal structures, cost v. profits, quantity v. quality and so forth. At the end of the book, George Ritzer outlines some strategies that people can use to fight, resists and/or limit McDonaldization in their lives ? some ideas are logical and others radical. Ritzer's writing on McDonaldization, its concepts and affects on society makes for surprising and enlightening reading.

2 out of 5 stars Full of inaccuracies . . . little creative thought........2005-12-03

I read this book hoping for a fair and balanced critical review of modern business. I found it to be little more than an attempt to justify a position that "all big business is bad". While that may be true, Ritzer spends a decent portion of the book using invalid arguments to support it.

For example, Ritzer claims that McDonalds hires young people "because their minds are more easily controlled than adults" (no mention that they worked cheaper), and was critical that McDonalds did not foster "creativity" on the job. Personally, I don't want teenagers to be creative with my food . . . and it seems it's not a bad idea that they learn a little discipline at work and as they mature and learn to make better decisions they can find jobs to be creative in.

Another criticism Ritzer uses is that universities "control" professors by setting a time schedule for classes - this is obviously not an attempt to control professors; it is instead the only way students can attend more than one class per semester.

Maybe I got turned off in the first chapters with his comparison of McDonalds to Hitler's gas chambers, could he have found something a little less sinister to compare it to?

That said, the argument that society is irreversibly changed because of industrialization . . . for better or for worse is certainly is a valid point . . . I just want to hear it argued with a little more critical review and common sense.

Over time, in his cookbooks, and on his TV series, Jacques Pépin has taught people how to cook simple, fully flavored dishes--food that reflects his French training while embracing American informality. Jacques Pépin: Fast Food My Way takes this approach one step further by providing 100-plus recipes for a wide range of delicious, meant-to-be fast dishes. These include Stuffed Scallops on Mushroom Rice; Chicken Breasts on Mashed Cauliflower with Red Salsa; Pasta, Ham, and Vegetable Gratin; and Apple, Pecan, and Apricot Crumble. The "my way" of the title can mean the use of time-saving tools (Pépin uses pressure cookers to achieve easy stews like his beef short-rib, mushroom, and potato dish) and convenience foods (canned black bean soup or sweet potatoes for new soup versions). Generally, though, the Pépin approach emphasizes the use of foods that are themselves quickly cooked, like chicken breasts or beef fillet and that can be made flavorful with equally fast-to-fix accompaniments, like his salsa mayonnaise or his tomato-olive sauce.

Fast is, of course, a relative term, and readers will find more than a few dishes in the book that may require more time or attention than they're willing to spend on a daily basis. But overall, the book offers enough easily made recipes, and super-time-saving formulas, like Instant Vegetable Soup, to make it a true cooking resource. --Arthur Boehm

With Jacques Ppin Fast Food My Way at your side, the best food is always the simplest.

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Look Fabulous.......2007-08-18

I am very far from being a great cook. I have, however, been able to impress so many guests in my home with these recipes which practically make themselves. All this due to the genius of M. Pepin. Highest possible recommendation. And it's fun, too!

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Wonderful Food.......2007-05-12

Jacques Pepin uses cooking and food to love people, and it shows in this wonderful and usable book. The recipes consistently reflect simple but important techniques, such as grating the onions rather than chopping them in the "Fridge Soup," or "Instant Vegetable Soup." You can't get much simpler than "Grapefruit Gratinee," yet the flavors meld delightfully.

This book goes on the shelf beside my favorite 3-4 time-tested, proven, yet fun cookbooks. I appreciate Jacque Pepin's contributions to cooking, and so do my family!

5 out of 5 stars Making delicious, home cooked meals couldn't be simpler........2007-05-07

This cookbook may not be the all encompassing tome that your grandmother may have used for her home cooking, but it provides the reader with various simple to make recipes nonetheless. The recipes found in this book require few steps from start to finish and use ingredients that you can find at your local market. You could plan a multiple course meal, from appetizer to dessert, and impress your friends and family with minimal effort. The underlying philosophy in this book is that fast food doesn't have to be empty calorie junk food.

4 out of 5 stars Worked better (for me) in conjunction with the (5 star) PBS DVD series.......2007-02-26

I picked up this book because a friend recommended it, and because I knew of Pepin as a contemporary of Julia Child, so I figured I couldn't go too far wrong. However (as the editorial review so discerningly mentions) some of the recipe titles and ingredient lists didn't seem promising to a first year cook who was stuck in "reheat takeout/deli food in microwave" mode until recently. and the food photography didn't help in most cases, either - eveyrhing seemed to be taken at an odd angle with a fish-eye lens. So I put FFMW up on a shelf in the back room, figuring that I might someday find it more in line with what I was looking for in a cookbook.

Then I happened on a PBS cable channel rebroadcasting a FFMW episode late one and I tuned in to see Pepin in action. Well, it was a revelation. Pepin was a true class act, and just seeing him in action was a culinary education. He was interesting, informative, modest and witty, and he put a 4 course dinner effortlessly and without fuss. Plus, the dishes he prepared looked fantastic. I watched another episode the next week, and the same thing happened again.

So I went back to my bookshelf, pulled FFMW down, gave it a serious look, and realized (smack palm to forehead) that once I had actually seen Pepin cook (as most purchasers of the book would have), then every thing in it made sense and was quite useful and compelling. The value had always been there. But as a beginning cook (and an American unfamiliar with this style of cooking) I had needed Pepin's "voice" to make it work for me. That's probably my failing, not Pepin's or his editorial staff, but I have to review my experience with the book, not what *should* have been if I were more seasoned in the kitchen.

Since then I have made several dishes from the book (and twice put together an entire menu on my weekend) and I can attest that this is a great culinary resource for people who want to eat well - but who can't deal with MTV style celebrity chefs like Rachel and Giada. I've ordered the two DVDs and am looking forward to seeing more of Mr. Pepin in action.

After reading through the recipes, there isn't even one that I am dying to re-create. Honestly, I doubt I'll end up making any of them. They are so time consuming it really makes you just want to go out and buy the real thing.

1 out of 5 stars A lot of these recipes are not good for people who are trying to lose weight. .......2007-09-14

I just received this book today in the mail. While I was going through this book, I found that a lot of the recipes are not good for people who are trying to watch their weight. This book may be good for people who are interested in finding alternatives to fast food places. In my mind, fast food is still fast food!!!! no matter how someone makes it. I also find a lot of the recipes high in calories. I find that this book can create real trouble for people who are on a serious path to losing weight. Temptation is an evil thing when you are trying to lose weight. All in all, not a good book for people who are trying to make recipes and eatting for weight lose.

4 out of 5 stars Yummy Brownies, Yummy Bread, and oh So Yummy Coffee.......2007-09-10

All I can say is Yummy. All of the recipes I have tried are great!! I love brownies and the DQ treat she has in here rocks. I also fell in love with the Hardess Chicken Sandwhich, I don't even make the sandwhich just the chicken breast itself and it is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks........2007-08-16

For someone, like me who is a fast food indulger it was nice to come across this book. Finding a way to eat the same tasty foods in a healthier fashion is a god send. Thanks Devin and keep up the good work.

P.S. - The brownies are awesome!

3 out of 5 stars Tastes real- takes forever!.......2007-07-16

We have tried many of the recipes in the cookbook and have found most of them taste like they were made at a fast food restaturant. The only problem, you don't get the "fast" service. The majority of the recipes take half and hour or more to prepare. Also, the Dairy Queen brownies are awful.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite cookbooks.......2007-08-13

I've cooked from these recipes for several years, and I've used it so much the binding has given out. It's one of my favorite cookbooks, because the recipes are up to the Moosewood standards, but are not too time-consuming. A few of the recipes I make on a regular basis for my family. If Moosewood ever comes out with a sequel, I'll buy it!

3 out of 5 stars An Okay Place to Start.......2007-06-09

I bought this book because I had recently seen Mooswood restraunt featured on a T.V. cooking show. I have to say I was a little disappointed when I started going through it. So many of the recipes were so basic, it was more like "how to boil water if you are vegetarian". I guess it is a good place to start if you are new to cooking period, and want to be vegetarian, but it is not for a more advanced cook. I recommend Vegetarian Times Complete Cookbookor 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes: Delicious, Easy-to-Make, Healthy Meals for Everyone (1,001) This is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner vegetarian.......2007-05-24

This book is great. Simple meals that take 30-35 minutes to prepare. Great for the person that is turning vegetarian or just wants to have a vegi dish once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Moosewood Cookbook.......2007-05-12

This is the most used vegetarian cookbook in my library. The recipes are reasonably fast, simple and tasty. I haven't been disappointed by a single recipe so far. Off to the side of each recipe the book gives you fuller menu options from other recipes in the book. It also gives you a brief description of just what it is that you are making. In addition to me being satisfied with the meals that come out of this book, my children (ages 4, 7, and 9) are also very satisfied. It is a big hit for the entire family. I find with most recipes that I can start making dinner at 5:00 and we can be seated and eating by 6:00. The recipes I've made so far are quite simple to make and most enjoyable to eat. My favourite recipe to date is the black bean soup. It is quick and easy to make if you use canned beans and produces a rich and satisfying meal that we all love. This is definitely a great cookbook for anybody, but especially for somebody that doesn't have several hours to spend on making dinner.

5 out of 5 stars Great - Good Food with Fast Recipes.......2007-04-30

I own a number of the Moosewood series cookbooks. This one is quickly becoming a favorite. The Avocado & Corn Salad, Spicy Corn Quesadilla, and Tomato & Bean Salad are my favorites so far. It's great to be able to cook a delicious veg. meal in under a half hour. Highly recommended.

Book Description

Somersize the fast and easy way and lose weight by eating delicious, home-cooked meals that are perfect for the entire family!

For more than ten years, Suzanne Somers has been preaching, “Fat is your friend and sugar is the greatest enemy!” Her Somersize program lets you shed pounds by eating rich, flavorful foods like meat, cheese, cream, butter, and eggs. Medical professionals are now saying what Suzanne and millions of Somersizers already know—the best way to fight the growing obesity epidemic in this country is a diet higher in proteins and real fats, and lower in sugar and carbohydrates.

More than 3 million readers have lost weight the Somersize way after reading Suzanne’s New York Times bestsellers Eat Great, Lose Weight; Get Skinny on Fabulous Food; and Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away. Now, in her new book, Fast and Easy, Suzanne makes Somersizing simple, affordable, and fun for the whole family. Whether you are too busy to cook or worried about feeding your family a healthy meal on a budget, Somersizing is the solution. In Fast and Easy Suzanne teaches you what foods your body converts to sugar and why you need to eliminate them. She outlines her weight-loss program for life, where you’ll forget how to count calories, fat grams, or carbohydrates and simply enjoy delicious foods with no weighing, no measuring, no portion control, and no deprivation. Here you’ll find more reasons to Somersize, including:

* How Suzanne’s balanced weight-loss plan is just what the doctor ordered
* How to heal your metabolism from years of yo-yo dieting
* How to convert your body to a fat-burning machine
* How obesity is a growing family problem and how Somersizing can stop it
* How to make meals in minutes, and Somersize products that make it even faster and easier to stay on the program
* How SomerSweet allows you to say good-bye to sugar without saying good-bye to sweets
* Moving, motivating testimonials from enthusiastic Somersizers
* Answers to more than 300 of the most frequently asked questions about this remarkably effective and sinfully delicious program

And, of course, Suzanne treats you to more than 100 new fast and easy recipes that will delight everyone in the family, including Turkey Taco Wraps, Somersize Double Double Cheeseburgers with Fast and Easy Onion Rings, In a Hurry Beef Curry, Cherry Chocolate Trifle, and Boston Cream Pie Cake, plus hometown favorites like Somersize Shake It and Bake It Chicken, Somersize Macaroni and Cheese, Baby-Back Barbecue Ribs, and much, much more.

All of Suzanne Somers' books are excellent. This has the easiest recipes. I love to eat without counting calories or portion sizes. I eat till I am full. I have lost 15 lbs in two weeks while eating delicious real food.
I recommend you purchase ALL of Suzanne's books. Each one has different recipes and the forwards are different also. The Forward to GET SKINNY is the best. GET SKINNY IS A MUST. All of Suzanne's books are a MUST. For the first time in my life I have hope that I will be SKINNY and HEALTHY one day.

5 out of 5 stars I was surprised that this is such a good book.......2004-06-28

When I see Suzanne Somers I just see Chrissy from Three's Company and all that snorting and dumb blonde-ing! I never paid any attention to any of the Suzanne Somers books because I figured this was just another celebrity attaching their persona to something. My library happened to have this on the shelf and since I had some time to kill while waiting for my daughter to pick out her books I decided to flip through the recipe section since I knew it was a low carb type of diet and I do atkins. I was very interested at what I saw so I checked it out. I have been totally shocked at how easy and terrific her ideas are and in fact her philosophy is quite interesting too. I am really impressed. I have a totally different viewpoint now of Suzanne Somers. I love this recipe book so much I had to buy it so I"d have a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great recipes!!.......2004-06-07

My husband & I just started the South Beach diet. Since Somersizing is a very similar concept (similar to Atkins too), I thought I'd check out these recipes. The book explains the concept of cutting out sugar & sugar forming carbohydrates (anything containing white flour). I looked into the other somersizing books & this one really has the best recipes. So far I've only tried a few & they were very delicious. The cream cheese pancakes & balsamic dijon chicken are yummy. I also bought Somersweet, some of the recipes call for it, but you can use Splenda or other sweeteners instead. All of the recipes in this book are appealing as well as healthy. And they are fast & easy to make.

3 out of 5 stars A few great recipes, but not the usual fabulous Williams and Sonoma........2007-06-10

As with everything Williams and Sonoma, I was expecting this to blow my socks off, but not so much. Some very good recipes, but a little lacking in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

I have tried several recipies and all were beyond wonderful. There are beautiful pictures in this book as well. The book is sectioned by prep time (15 vs. 30 min hands on) and I found that to be pretty accurate. I like browning meats prior to slow cooking anyway because it brings out the flavor, so that time is to be expected. There are some standards and some recipies that were new and exciting. A great addition to my collection.

3 out of 5 stars Small Book, Fancy Recipes.......2007-01-29

Alot of the recipes in this book look interesting and tasty, but I'm not sure if I'll ever make some of the recipes, such as the duck recipe. Nice book to add to my collection though.

5 out of 5 stars love this book.......2007-01-23

i love this cookbook, it's so easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. the only thing to be aware of is the recipes are for a 7 qt crock pot. mine is only 3 1/2, so i just halve the recipes.

1 out of 5 stars SLOW COOKING THAT WILL TAKE LOTS OF YOUR TIME!.......2007-01-11

If you're looking for something quick ... just throw everything in the pot & leave for the day ... this is not the cookbook for you. Most recipes require the ingredients be browned, simmered, sauted, & the pan deglazed with juice, wine, etc. before item can be tucked into the crock for a day of slow cooking. Even the vegetables need to be sauted. These are all very good recipes, but more suited to a good iron casserole simmering on top of the stove.

The last third of the 100 page book is filled with oven, grill & top of stove recipes.
