Great book.......2007-10-10
This is a great book. Lots of hints on cleaning, etc. I have used it numerous times and it works!
This is a great resource book.......2007-09-28
I bought "Haley's Hints" after seeing it highlighted on one of the fundraising shows on PBS. We're already using lots of the tips in the book, and loving them. The only problem we encountered was actually finding the water softener (or washing soda). It does not mention any brand names, and most stores I checked didn't know what I was referring to. One other note of interest that I've discovered through trial and error...when it says use salt, use iodized salt...NOT sea salt. Apparently the iodized version has a critical component missing in natural salt.
Great Buy!.......2007-09-16
I purchased this book after seeing a segment on PBS. This book is filled with simple tips on how to organize your home. Several tips have become quick favorites. This book led me to purchase Haley's Cleaning Tips which have really been useful. I even purchased a copy for my mother who has enjoyed learning new tips.
Haleys Hints?.......2007-09-14
I was looking forward to getting this book especially after watching the PBS special, but I was so disappointed. I was really looking for good products for cleaning products(which I haven't found yet). I think that if he transcribed the show that he does for PBS and sells that he will have a much better book. I would only recommend this book if you already have some good home care books in your collection. This is not a particularly good choice for the modern family.
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS.......2007-09-06
Great book for practical, efficient hints of all types. Lots of short cuts too. We all can use Haley's Hints in our busy daily lives.

Loving This Book!!!.......2007-08-17
I would have given this book more than 5 stars, if I could!
I checked it out via my local library, but will be purchasing it, for sure.
The book is well laid out; you don't have to read the whole thing to get to what you need. There is a section for each cleaning zone of your house, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc...
The recipes for cleaning (also in their own section) are easy to make, and come from readily available, healthy alternatives...and perform much better than their toxic cousins.
I am so impressed at the performance of club soda; I never knew Windex and Glass Plus weren't working that well, until I tried club soda instead. My shiny surfaces look fantastic; at 50 cents a liter, who would want to pay more for chemicals?!
I have also been pleasantly surprised at how soft baking soda makes my laundry; goodbye fabric softener.
This book does a good job of encouraging you to become "more" green; not just for people who want to throw everything out and start over, but for people who want to change one or two things in their house to reduce the negative impact they may have on the environment. The awesome side-effect is, many of the "green" alternatives really do clean better, and are wayyyyy cheaper; trust me, I've cleaned houses for a living, and was one of those suckers who bought a diferent cleaning product for every surface in my home.
I have a 9 mo old in the house 2 days a week, as a part-time nanny, and I am proud to say, there is now nothing in my cleaning cabinet, that I would worry about her getting into; it will remain child-proof, for sure, but, if she drank my window cleaner, now, the worst that would happen is a big club-soda-burp.
Thanks, Green Clean!!!
Very good for some.......2007-08-14
This is a very good book for someone just starting out or who is thinking of "going green" for the first time. It has a lot of common sense information and guidelines on how to clean. It has good basic information on the hazards of commercially made products. Everything is very clearly laid out and the non-paper book is a very good idea for an environmentally friendly cleaning book.
What it is not good for is for someone who already knows the hazards and has been green cleaning for quite some time. I had been looking for something more up to date than my first edition of "Clean and Green" by Annie Berthold-Bond but this one is not it. I am looking forward to trying the "Vinegar of Four Thieves" and maybe a few other of the recipes and I have never seen a guide to laundry labels before (now I will know what all those triangles and little irons really mean). But the rest of the book is full of stuff any environmentally aware person would already know and if I had seen the book before buying, I would not have bought it. I will photocopy a few pages and then recycle the book on to someone to whom would like to begin going green.
Great purchase for everyone.......2007-07-19
I really liked this book and it gave a lot of helpful tips about hot to clean your house using all natural products. The book talks about how harmful all the additives and chemicals in cleaners are and it makes sense. There is a little bit of fluff with just common recommendations about random parts of life but it is very interesting and helpful. I would definately recommend this book.
Bamboozled no more!.......2007-07-03
I used to think I had to use the nuclear option to clean my house. I had to use the harshest chemicals to disinfect and clean. Then I had a baby and read about the dangers that household cleaners pose to her development and decided I'd use a little more elbow grease to keep my family (and the environment) safe. New research has shown that breast cancer, for instance, is more environmental than hereditary. Its cause has been linked to 200 everyday chemicals including the dioxins in household bleach. Another reason I made the switch.
This book has recipes for cleaning and shares the history of cleaning products. After reading it I realized my cleaning choices had been shaped by the successful marketing of companies who were selling dangerous chemicals in pretty bottles. Now, I buy natural, human and environmentally safe products or whip up my own cleaning products on the cheap!
Green advice that's easy to use!.......2007-05-10
I borrowed this book from the library to check it out first. But, now I'm buying it. The beginning could be skipped if you want to get right to the nitty-gritty! :) The recipes for cleaners are at the end and they work well!
I highly recommend this book to save you money and most imporantly, help save the environment!

In recent years, a revived and burgeoning interest in wholesome, locally baked bread has swept the country, with bakeries springing up in small towns and major urban areas alike, producing an astounding variety of interesting, crusty, tasty, handmade breads. The Bread Builders explains the grains and flours, leavens and doughs, the chemistry of bread, and the physics of baking in a big book filled with helpful drawings, photographs, recipes, and tips. In a unique angle for a book on baking bread, it also includes detailed diagrams and instructions for building your own masonry bread oven from scratch.
As Laurel Robertson, author of The New Laurel's Kitchen says, "This book is ice cream for a baker! We visit legendary bakeries, meet wonderful people, learn all sorts of fascinating scientific information with practical usefulness in bowl and oven, and best of all, get the skinny on masonry ovens, the cherished fantasy of us all." The enthusiasm of the authors in their search for the perfect loaf of bread permeates this detailed but lively and accessible book, and will offer much of use to both amateur and professional bread makers. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippees places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction.
Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisinal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America.
Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens.
The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including:
Connoisseurs of good bread and good food.
Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence.
Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery.
Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project.
Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.

Bread minutia.......2007-07-20
I was looking for a book that would help me understand how to build a masonry oven. This book provides that along with much much more. The detail in the book regarding bread making is excellent and I am certain I will read this book many times as my experience grows. I consider it an excellent book for anyone interested in breadmaking.
Fresh Bread and the oven to bake them in.......2007-02-13
This is a fantastic book for anyone who really enjoys fresh bread. I wore out a bread machine and learned to knead all my favorites by hand. This not only explains every part and ingredient's role in making bread, it also has all the description and scientific explanation to build an outdoor bread oven. We're planning on building an outdoor kitchen and the bread oven in this book will be a part of it.
The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens.......2007-01-16
I purchased 5 of these books one for me and four for friends. I was phoned and thanked for such an "interesting and illuminating gift". This book is honest, sensible, healthy and really useful. I am so glad I was advised to get it from a sourdough baker in Australia!! Yes it is better than Good.
Art and science of artisanal baking.......2007-01-09
The only thing I would add to all these other laudatory reviews is this:
Be careful before you order this book. There is a good chance you will be overtaken with equipment lust and just HAVE to have a masonry oven in your backyard!!!
Seriously, it's a great book. If you're at all curious about old-fashioned leavened bread as opposed to the baloony-yeasty variety, check this out.
Best Book on Everything About Baking Bread.......2006-11-05
This books is excellent...gives detail, explicit descriptions about the entire science and process of bread building!! I have read this book over and over and each time I learn more than I did before. It is an easy to read book, there is just so much detail on everything. The recipe testers for "Cooks Illustrated" (a fabulous magazine for very serious cooks) used this book to help refine their bread recipes!! A must have for bakers!!! Also a good book for recipes is "The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book."

good book.......2007-09-15
Has a lot of no noncence recipies .It is not flsahy but the recipies work .
A Let Down.......2007-08-29
i was hoping to expand on bread machine recipes from the booklet that came with my mahine. This book has tons of recipes, but they're all pretty much the same, just switches flavors. Imagine any kind of fruit and nut combo bread, and they put it in there.I was hoping for more variety as far as type o fbreads and dough. Plus they have alot of sourdough recipes, which takes three days to make sourdough, somethinig I'm not inclined to do. It was kind of a disappoinment. i did try the banana bread recipe, but it came out like reguar white bread with a banana flavor-not very good.
Big disappointment.......2007-08-16
So sorry I wasted my money on this book. The recipes are too large for my machine. Some of them sound good, but since I have a 1 pound machine and all the recipes are for 1 1/2 & 2 pound machines, they did not do me much good. I was not expecting the soup and sandwiches portion of the book, either. If I had wanted soup recipes, I would NOT have bought a cookbook about making bread. It is a very nice looking book, however and lays flat for easy reading. The recipes are easy to read, also. Format is good.
Well designed, but slightly complex recipes.......2007-07-11
I have no complaints about this recipe book except that many of the recipes are very complicated and not basic. For instance, there is no basic honey wheat bread recipe. Every recipe has on average about 15 different ingredients, which is not very basic and makes utilizing the recipes a bit tedious when you have to hunt down ingredients, like gluten, rye flour, etc.
So-So.......2007-06-09
The first time I tried a recipe from this book, I thought it had too much salt and not enough yeast. I was right! Since then, I have increased the yeast by about 1/3 and decreased the salt by about 1/3, and they are about right.
The alternating orange & blue type is supposed to make it easier to read, but it makes it harder. For some reason, you tend to skip the orange lines. Be careful not to leave out ingredients!
I do like that there are separate lists of ingredients for medium and large loaves of bread, and the recipes tell you which cycle is recommended for each recipe.
I wish there were some pictures of some of the recipes. No pictures makes it feel like a cheap, fund-raising textbook or something. It doesn't feel like a professional recipe book.
Book Description
As indoor kitchen design books do, The New Outdoor Kitchen covers initial design and planning and, in subsequent chapters, covers "stove" options (grills, smokers, wood-fired ovens); the rest of the kitchen (outdoor refrigerators, sinks, cabinets, and countertops); the entertaining and eating areas (including a discussion of outdoor heaters, social fire-fireplaces, firepits, and chimineas--and bug control to increase your season of enjoyment); and, finally, the grace notes of the outdoor kitchen--lighting and sound systems, plantings, and water features. Ten portfolio kitchens will be laced between the chapters, and the book will conclude with an extensive source list. The kitchens pictured in the book will run the size, price, ambition, and creativity gamut, from kitchens sited on decks and patios to a small urban backyard set up to elaborate built-in, freestanding outdoor environments.

I didn't find many of his ideas that I would use. Most were alittle too over the top. I would scale them down.

Customer Reviews:
A great and helpful read!.......2007-08-24
I thought this was a great book! It really helped me to recognize my food triggers and examine the reasons behind why I overeat. I have defintley used this book to eat less, because I have been able to keep myself from eating out of boredom or other emotions from the tips and tools in this book. I would highly recommend it!
Light on technique and obnoxiously worded ..........2007-06-14
This book does have value, but it has extremely serious flaws.
As others have pointed out, the book is heavy on explanatory material and inspirational biographies and light on technique. Additionally, its spacious graphic design and large font seem to have been chosen to make fewer words fill more pages.
Significantly, this book was OBNOXIOUSLY gynocentric in its word choices. Not only was there not one single male pronoun in the book, there were very few entirely gender-neutral sentences (even references to "someone" were quickly followed up with "she", etc.). It was, "a woman feels", "she may", etc. As a man reading the text, this had the effect of constantly distancing me from the advice being given. Yet I think female readers might equally find insult in the book's similar assumption that its female readers are exclusively straight and exclusively married -- with no references to boyfriends or partners, only to husbands and children. If the concept of emotional eating were not so (relatively) new, I would have suspected the text to have been imported whole from the 1950s.
I also cannot help but laugh at the irony of what a poor choice of titles this is. For people who are dealing with loneliness, self-blame, and anger, asking them to carry around a book whose cover features, in extremely large letters, the words "STOP STUFFING YOURSELF!" can only be an exercise in cruelty, if unintentional cruelty.
I will not say this book was useless (which is why I won't give it a single star) — it did contain some phrases, concepts, and techniques I found useful, but nowhere near enough in number to justify anything more than a handout. I imagine emotional eating must be covered much more adroitly in other texts, and I urge you to investigate them and not this.
Very insightful especially if you are doing Weight Watchers........2007-05-07
If you are on the WeightWatchers diet get this book. it is insightful and it gives you alternate alternatives.
Eye Opener.......2006-02-23
This book was a real eye opener for me. I had no idea about some of the topics discussed in most of these chapters. No diet or lifestyle change works over night, and I think that this book helps explain that in the simplest way.
OK, for what it is........2005-10-02
This is the same stuff one finds in the women's magazines at the checkouts or maybe this is where they may have got some of their articles. The "why do you eat" quiz was my favourite part of the book & helpful. I have lent this to other friends & they liked it as well. Evidentlty they don't buy women's magazine . All in all a so-so addition to my library.
Book Description
Just as humans need to eat the right balance of protein, vegetables, and whole grains, so do dogs. But where do we find the time to cook special meals just for our pets when many of us struggle to feed ourselves healthfully? With The Dog Ate It, there's no need to prepare separate meals. Developed by an award-winning cookbook writer and a rancher, The Dog Ate It is the first cookbook with recipes designed for dogs and their owners to savor together, such as:
* Chow Bella Burger Bites, Beef Teriyappi, Sausage Cheese Grits, Growly Good Granola, Beggar's Purses, Cheddar Chomps, Sushi Hand Rolls, Dog-Friendly Salads, Chicken Soup, Adobo Chicken, Good Gravy, Turkey Meatballs, Lamb Shish Kebabs, Canine Kasha, North Carolina Pork Sandwiches, Roasted Pork Chops, Pekingese Duck, Mom's Macaroni and Cheese, and more!
* Treats and Desserts from the Barkery include: Pumpkin Craisin Muffins, Tarte Tatin, Bowser's Brownies, Carob Ganache, Coco Loco Bites, Counter Surfer's Cookies, Banana Mutt Bread, Barking Biscotti, and Peanut Butter Buddy Bones
With good nutrition guidelines for dogs of all sizes, a list of Doggie Diet Dos and Don'ts, and what foods to have on hand so you can invent your own Fido-friendly recipes, The Dog Ate It is perfect for an occasional treat or for every night. You'll learn which commercial dog foods are healthy substitutes for home-cooked grub, and even how to throw the perfect pooch party for Howl-a-Ween, Canine Christmas (Fleas Navidad), or Bowser's birthday.
Few pet parents can resist sneaking table scraps to their pups. The Dog Ate It takes this principle to a marvelous new, guilt-free level, with recipes that please the palates of every member of your household. BACKCOVER: When I realized that THE DOG ATE IT was about meals for bipeds and quadrupeds to share, I feared the worst, namely, that dogs were running the culinary show and that I would be expected not only to cook and eat homework, but to prepare and consume such canine favorites as desiccated pigs' ears and rawhide chew strips, not to mention rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and other delicacies so fresh that they were still alive. Fortunately, my fears were unfounded. The recipes in this delectably eccentric cookbook are designed to delight dog lovers as well as the objects of their affection. Highly recommended!

So Far So Good.......2007-09-27
I recently purchased this book and just tried a few recipes from it. My 7-month old Wheaten Terrier puppy loves the biscotti and the cheesy-garlic biscuits. He will try the mac & cheese and the spaghetti tonight and I certainly think it smells great. I did not use the cayenne pepper, since I did not have it on-hand. As for the review below, the back of the book lists foods not to feed your dog in which grapes and raisins are listed, so perhaps the reviewer did not see this or did not see the for "humans only" which occurs throughout the book. I certainly don't think that you should choose just one cook book for your dog, instead read from each school of thought and remember you know your dog, so in the end you can provide the best nutrition for your pet.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2007-04-09
If the authors do not know that raisins and cayenne pepper are not good for dogs, they should not be writing cookbooks for dogs.
I had to put in one star, but I would make it a minus 100 if I could.

For more than 40 years, designer Lilly Pulitzer has lead the charge in pretty, preppy chic--a resort look long-worshipped by prim teens and stylish ladies alike. While the signature pink-and-lime-green floral frocks are what she's famous for, Pulitzer has also become known over the decades as the consummate hostess, now celebrated in her book Essentially Lilly: A Guide to Colorful Entertaining. Like most people with great style who aren't shy about showing it, Pulitzer put her personal stamp of informal elegance on all her gatherings, turning her home in Palm Beach back in the sixties (and beyond) into a "famously unstuffy" stomping ground for the resort town's movers and shakers. Unlike other entertaining tomes, Essentially Lilly doesn't go the route of practical party planning. Instead, Pulitzer's book unfolds like a diary of sorts, a scrapbook of her life chronicling inspirations, favorite moments, and events. Chapters are broken down into three sections reflective of the designer's lively aesthetic ("Mellow Yellow Mornings," "Think Pink Afternoons," "True Blue Evenings"), and ideas come by way of Pulitzer's Palm Beach passions--sunrise sails to the Bahamas, golf and tennis, weddings in her jungle slat house, and treasure hunting, among other things. In lieu of countless recipes (though there are a few good ones), Pulitzer extends a broader one--a more personal formula for a fun life, and in this, Essentially Lilly is dynamic and sincere. --Christene Barberich
Book Description
More than just the woman who created the fashion empire that bears her name, Lilly Pulitzer exemplifies an attitude, a casual sort of elegance, a style called "affluence at ease." Lilly and her clothing wholeheartedly embrace color -- she made famous the pink and green combination -- and her love of vibrant hues and bold prints led the New York Times to recently call her "a major force in prep resort wear for forty years."
But Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau is also almost as well-known for her entertaining as she is for her fashions. A tribute to her insouciant lifestyle, Essentially Lilly is lavishly illustrated and peppered with anecdotal memories of a life filled with color. Joined by her family and close friends, Lilly recalls the parties, the decorating, the food, and the fashion that have been part of her life in Palm Beach since she arrived there in the 1950s.
With sections devoted to each part of the day, Essentially Lilly captures a variety of social events -- from a sunrise sail to a beach supper under the stars -- and imbues each with singular "Lilly style":
Mellow Yellow Mornings -- start the day off easy with a walk on the beach or a luxuriously lazy breakfast in bed. Take some friends out for an early morning sail or a country club brunch. Round off the morning hunting for a one-of-a-kind treasure at a local flea market.
Think Pink Afternoons -- rev up the middle of the day with a bridesmaids' lunch, a birthday cookout, or a charity tea. Perhaps you'd rather relax with a fruity pool party or a "just-looking" stroll down Palm Beach's fabled Worth Avenue. True Blue Evenings -- gather your friends together for a festive cocktail party or a romantic beach dinner under a full moon. Maybe it's a deep woods campfire that appeals to you, or watching a movie out under the stars, or just a simple pizza party for your family.
Essentially Lilly presents memories and menus, beautiful photographs and dazzling illustrations as well as dozens of recipes and entertaining suggestions to make your own get-togethers as successful as one of Lilly's famed parties. Best of all, Lilly offers her spirited advice throughout: "Just relax and have fun -- and be an individual," she says. "It's better that you enjoy yourself than it is to get it right." Good rules to live by.

Customer Reviews:
not my life style, but I enjoy the book anyway.......2007-05-15
Okay, okay -- probably most of us don't live like Lilly. I don't have a house in Palm Beach or hundreds of close friends. But don't consider this book as "must-follow-instructions" manual. Instead, consider it worthwhile as a relaxing read and inspiration for occasions when you entertain a few friends or family. I like the photos and the arrangement of contents (collections of memories, recipes, and ideas for distinctly different entertaining occasions). I've made only a few of the recipes but they were successful and really good. I think the book is worth the price.
It's fab.......2007-05-07
She even talks about Jackie O, and it has some vintage pictures of frocks from the 60's and the story of the Lilly dress.
not too impressed.......2005-08-06
i read some contents of the books, and was really interested. It turns out to be nothing special, but the illustrations are adorable. Overall i was not too impressed. Lilly seems like a Martha Steward hippie version.
Light summery fun.......2005-07-21
Yes, Essentially Lilly is frothy, silly and mindless, but like a light angel food cake and berry dessert, that's what summer is about. If you like recipes and entertaining, this book is fun to flip through. One doesn't have to belong to the country club or routinely throw chic parties for a few dozen of her closest friends in order to aspire to such ideas. War and Peace it ain't, but who expected that from Lilly Pulitzer? (Maybe the last name threw some people off.) This is a pretty book with fun party and food ideas, which is sufficient entertainment for a lazy summer day either at the country club, or just dreaming about being part of that scene.
An Aryan Dream.......2005-04-08
Even as a white woman I find this tough to stomach. If you see people of color in your life and like it that way, this Lily Pulitzer guide is a nightmare. Despite the title of the book, hers is a washed-out and scary vision. Only white people in photos and illustrations. Really really really white people. It's an Aryan Dream to be sure. Lily, come into 21st Century America! I'm returning my copy pronto.
