Hot rock Sax.......2007-01-10
The book has some good information in it, but I think it should be updated, and have a C. D. with examples of the sounds and exercises...thus the purchaser will benefit more fully from it's contient...
Those who do, do ! Rock sax is a hit.......2005-04-23
Those who can do, do.This is something very important to the saxophone. I live in Amsterdam and agree in the other reviews, I heard Tim Price here playing a lot and he can do. He is big respected here in Amsterdam because of Hans and Candy Dulfer really dig him, and his music.
I like how he explain the music, if you can play a little or a lot the text is very easy to get to.
The basics section help me a lot because I had not a lot of thatin my training. Likewise the blues section or the interval section chapter.
I hope this book helps people round the world, it is good for music.Fantastic book from a fantastic saxman.
Sorry about my English, I am good talkerbut not so good typer. Better though on sax with this book.
Buy it it is the best.......2005-04-23
The book you need if you play rock n' roll.
The best book.

What can you say when Plas Johnson tells you to buy this book?
You buy the book. And you see why Plas told you to buy it.
The inside information here is without a doubt a life saver for the rock sax player.
I never understood FLUTTER TOUNGE tech. I had other rock sax books but they fell real short, vage with to many pictures. This book gets right in your face and tells it like it is.
Tim Price really has created a bible of rock sax stuff here.
Some call it a text. I call it a life saver. My playing improved immediatly after getting this book.
Don't leave home without this book.
The most helpful Sax book I ever had.......2005-04-23
I bought this book after I saw the author playing in New Orleans at a club. The text is perfect, everything is highly explained and easy to put to use.
The history is so helpful and to the point. I never heard of some of these people until I got this. That was a experience as well.
I tried other books on this subject but they fell short. This book not only is clear and cool but written by one of the masters of the sax. I heard him in New Orleans with Dr John, then later doing some jazz at his Coltrane Tribute. What a player and nice guy. I think Price deserves the press and image that guys like Branford or Sanborn have. He's more unique than they are, and can walk the walk and talk the talk. This book proves that 1000%.
Buy the book and you will see results.
100000000 stars for this one!

Country Pickin': The Don Rich Anthology
ASIN: B000MUTY2I |
Product Description
This book/CD set features 25 twangy intermediate-to-advanced solos in the classic honky tonk style. If you love the sound of a twangy Telecaster guitar, you will enjoy learning the solos in this book. It is the best classic country solos book available!
This is an intermediate to advanced book for players having basic skills. However, a brave and ambitious beginner might be able to tackle the slower solos.
The solos contain many great LICKS and IDEAS that can be used by a creative onstage country guitarist.
All solos are written in TAB and standard notation, and recorded on the companion CD.
Few styles of music have enjoyed the widespread and enduring popularity of country music. Through the years, country music has developed from the rural Southern string band sound to the raw honky-tonk of the postwar period, the Nashville pop sounds of the late 50s and 60s, and finally the overly slick commercial sound of today.
The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60sbefore rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country guitar solos.
Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs.
A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. The result is an authentic sounding collection of country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed.

Customer Reviews:
Most in depth approach to understanding bluegrass I have come across.......2007-06-14
I came across this book and realized that it is the most sophisticated approach to understanding the underlying principles of bluegrass guitar. Hopefully the reader is listening to lots of bluegrass to begin with to adopt the sound so that the lack of an accompanying CD can be seen as a minor drawback. Yes, the examples are all in the key of G and C, but what people need to realize is that 1) those are the two most common positions to play bluegrass at the neck and 2) any lick can (and should) be transcribed to the keys of A,E, and D both at the nut and in closed positions as well. I would rather have over three hundred examples of licks in one or two keys so I can just concentrate on building the Bluegrass vocabulary rather than a one thousand page book that did all of the transcribing for me. The scope of the book is not to teach how to read music or about music theory, and it definitely is most useful if you are about an intermediate so you can learn each lick in 1-2 minutes and then just practice repeating it until it becomes burned into your implicit hand memory. You'd be surprised that after about 30-40 licks learned you already start to develop a nice workable vocabulary of bluegrass phrases that can be juxtaposed to your liking.
I am planning on going through this book cover to cover, and combined with Steve Kaufman's method of learning 40 bluegrass songs and learning them in the keys CAGED in open and closed positions this will probably be the best pathway to take to master bluegrass guitar. It takes a while but will be worth it. I digress, but in short this book DOES have very hot licks and ideas and I recommend it to anyone interesting in bluegrass guitar.
Extremely good...if you're somewhat musically literate.......2007-01-04
It's an old publication (1985), no CD, just standard notation and tab examples (that keeps it from being 5 stars or useful to many guitarists who just can't learn to read.... But it's very good as far as it goes, has oodles of 'licks' and standard bluegrass phrases, and the narrative is clear and easy to follow when it's time to discuss technique. I've played guitar since 1958, never bluegrass, but I think it could work well for all levels of players who can comfortably work through standard notation and/or tabs with or without a teacher. If not, you're limited to publications that give you recorded examples--I have several tutorials of that kind (bluegrass and other genres, too, I'm a die-hard collector) and have yet to find one that is better than pedestrian or is very useful to people who are much beyond beginners. This is a good, massive tome for those who can wade through it.
CD???.......2006-08-19
Though the book is very well writen it could use a CD with the songs and licks for those of us who may never have heard them before.
Pure Bluegrass Guitar..........2006-07-09
I was lucky enough to attend a gig by Mr Starr in Cambridge, UK. I had never heard solo bluegrass guitar before and was impressed, not just by his playing but the effect of that style played solo. It was a very pure sound, quite moving.
I got the book on that basis. It is bluegrass, though. Solo riffs and a million variations on the 'g run', that clicheed ending to most bluegrass tunes.
If you like bluegrass and want to work on flatpicking, this is definitely for you. I have personally moved on; I play classical guitar now but his gig that night remains memorable.
Not so hot licks.......2006-04-10
The licks aren't so hot. This book doesn't give you any understanding of the scales underlying the licks. Also, it focuses almost exclusively on the open fingering and a limited set of chords which doesn't really help you if you, like, play a different song. So if you think you can memorize your way into bluegrass, this is the book for you.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book on modern electric country guitar playing.......2006-07-27
This isn't a Mel Bay country western sing around the campfire guitar book your grandpa used. This book is written for the electric guitarist that loves the new "Hot Nashville" style of Brent Mason Telecaster playing heard coming out of the recording studios of Music Row in Nashville today.
The book's greatest asset is in its format. Very well organized. Every lick, whether it be by Albert Lee, Ray Flacke, or Brent Mason, is preceded by a theoretical explanation showing which scale the lick came from in clear diagram form for you to practice. You can reference the CD which includes most examples, and which really helps to train your ear as far as what hot country guitar is supposed to sound like.
The scales are country specific. Not that they're ONLY played in country music but they're the most commonly used by today's Nashville session guitarist. What I found interesting are the composite country scales that include bebop chromatic notes. I've seen these composite scales before in jazz books as being called "blues scales" or "mixolydian bebop" scales, but now I see, and hear, how they apply to country.
Another great feature of the book's format is that a lot of music theory has been put at the end of the book for further study and for reference. You can tell the author, Michael Hawley, is a professional guitar instructor and you feel as though you're being taught country guitar in his master class.
There's of course Telecaster chicken pickin. There is even fast Doc Watson bluegrass runs played on acoustic guitar. The only thing I thought the book lacked was an in depth study of right hand technique, since the right hand popping of the strings is what makes country guitar sound different than other styles and takes years to master.
Great book Michael! Looking forward to more.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointingly Tepid.......2007-05-11
I agree with the other review (my version originally published in 2002) maybe a new version/release will take the shortcomings in the next revision.
A Brilliant idea and long overdue but is realised very poorly. The 56 (2 bar Melody licks) nor the 16 (4 bar) nor 12 (8 bar) nor 12 (endings) are in any way special or different from normal. Only when we get to the five Cross Picking are there any memorable (4) licks.
Suggestions for the next version, get transcripts of special ornamental licks as others have suggested, transpose suitable lovely fiddle, banjo and some guitar licks, to the mandolin and finally increase the selection of the cross picking licks from the meager 5.
In all a brilliant idea, much needed and would be greatly appreciated but poorly executed.
Not the greatest for "red hot" bluegrass licks.......2002-12-17
Larry McCabe, from Missouri, is a music teacher with a blues music background who has authored a number of instruction books on blues, boogie and rock guitar, bass, and songwriting. I'm afraid that he wasn't the best choice of authors for one on bluegrass mandolin. This 45-page book contains 101 mandolin licks and solos in the keys of C, G, D, and A minor, broken down into phrases of two, four, and eight bars. Several endings and crosspicking licks are also included. Some picking exercises are also offered as McCabe states, "alternate-picking is essential for proper articulation of bluegrass music." The compact disc includes all of the examples (except picking exercises) with guitar accompaniment. McCabe claims that both new and experienced bluegrassers will find much of value in this book, but I'm not so sure. The inherent problem is that many of the licks and solos are not all that common in bluegrass music. Stylistically, he doesn't present a good foundation for bluegrass mandolin, and the melodic concepts and phrasings shown don't capture the bluegrass sound. McCabe would have been much more successful by transcribing actual snippets of mandolin playing by such seminal artists as Bill Monroe, Jesse McReynolds, Doyle Lawson, and others. The author could have provided a discography that referenced each "red hot" lick and solo on albums. As presented, many of the licks are merely fragments of forgettable melody built off major or minor scales. Many chord progressions presented, especially those with minor chords, are not all that common in bluegrass. Some of the solos begin to sound much like fiddle tunes such as "Cotton Patch Rag." A beginner might find this book useful as a source of exercises to help build manual dexterity and speed. By studying the examples, the solos might help one clarify how improvisation is built around melody and chord changes. A more advanced mandolinist might find a few ideas in the book that will stimulate their own creativity. However, I don't think McCabe's ideas are the most sensible approach for someone wanting to learn hot bluegrass licks and solos. The old-fashioned way still seems to prevail among most musicians. That involves slowing down albums, transcribing the breaks, and practicing them diligently. A book that would have presented the greatest bluegrass licks and solos of all time, as played by the bluegrass mandolin masters, would have been a treasure. We can find some of these on-line or in old copies of Mandolin World News. Unfortunately, McCabe's book lacks the technical and stylistic substance to make it very worthwhile for study of bluegrass mandolin, and its role as a lead instrument within that genre. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now magazine)

Review of Western Swing Licks Book.......2007-01-12
This book is an excellent way to learn some authentic licks for Western Swing guitar. The licks are written in tab and notated. This is an intermediate to advanced book and assumes that yuou can play the guitar reasonably well. Like all of theses lick books you should learn these licks in serveral keys and practice them over the changes to your favorite tunes to internalize thier use. If you are willing to take the time to do this the results will be well worthwhile. I would alos suggest getting Brent Mason's video, he has some great Western swing lines as well as great country licks. Also Stacy Phillips book "Western Swing Fiddle" has a lot of transcriptions off the reodrd that will give you the feel of improvising in a Western Swing style.

Customer Reviews:
this book stinks.......2007-03-23
I wasted 20 dollars on this stupid book. The licks are all lame. It's hard to believe they could put together 101 crappy licks but they did. I didn't find one useful piece of info in this stupid book. My favorite place so far for lick has been the Brad davis series on Flatpick jam DVD. This book stinks.
Red hot licks.......2006-03-01
As a guitar teacher I had been looking for a book like this in the UK, but just couldn't get one. A shame, as there is a lot of interest in Bluegrass here at the moment. This is very useful, especially the endings in specific keys, and the cross-picking exercises
Luke warm licks.......2002-10-27
This 48-page book contains 101 guitar licks in the keys of C, G, D, and A minor, broken down into phrases of two, four, and eight bars. McCabe refers to the eight-bar phrases as solos. In addition, several endings and crosspicking licks are included. The companion compact disc includes all of the examples with guitar chordal accompaniment, although it fails to demonstrate the picking exercises at the end of the book. McCabe claims that these licks are standard in bluegrass, country, and folk music. However, many are not that memorable, and some are built on chord progressions that aren't so commonplace. Some of the phrases taught are merely simple forgettable breaks built off scales, while some of the other more melodic ones remind me of elementary fiddle tunes. When I look for hot licks, I'm wanting some melodic fragments that will have utility and that I can incorporate into various musical settings. While you may discover a few new ideas in this collection of bluegrass licks, I would advise the guitarist who is wishing to learn how to improvise and improve lead breaks to invest their money in a book that concentrates on standard scale exercises instead. If you like learning phrases to embellish your playing, keep in mind that these "red hot" licks are only lukewarm. -- Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now

Some great licks to get you pickin' and jumpin' around.......2001-02-15
Just wanted to give my 2 cents here. The book has some great licks for the banjo. They will definitely get you picking an jumping all around. The problem with the book is that if you have used a lot of other instructional books that have tablature where the notes are on the line, then this book will through you off. All of the tablature in the book is between the lines which is a little tricky on the eye if you are trained otherwise. This may not be a big deal at all to those that are very skilled, but to a few of us beginners, it kind of throws us off. That's it. Besides that a great book.
A must for banjo players........1998-04-25
This book is packed full of great licks. It changed my playing overnight. Tony's clear and insightful teaching style comes through as always. I learn something new from it all the time and it's at the top of my stack when I sit down to practice.

Good if you can Read music........2003-10-19
This is a good book generally. I does have 450 licks of 2 or 3 measures. If you can learn all of these it would vastly improve your playing. However, the included Cd only has 75 of the licks in the book so if you are not adept at reading music you might not be able to utilize all of them. Some of the recordings seem to be slighty out of pitch.

Not what it sounds like.......2006-11-23
This book is great for beginning blues player but is review for anyone whose got there act at least somewhat together. About a quarter of the book is just first position stuff and it doesn't get past basic stuff in second position. Also the playalong tracks are really short and will do no more than give you an idea of what theyre teaching you is supposed to sound like. If your just starting out though and want to learn the basics this book is perfect because it will show you some fun stuff to play right away. for a real lick book check out Tom Balls Big Walter Little Walter lick book (not the exact title.) Thats got some awsome and classic licks and covers a wide range of difficulty so not all of it will be over your head assuming you can play single notes.
good luck playin harp.
