Product Description

If a big hungry moose comes to visit, you might give him a muffin to make him feel at home. If you give him a muffin, he'll want some jam to go with it. When he's eaten all your muffins, he'll want to go to the store to get some more muffin mix. In this hilarious sequel to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, the young host is again run ragged by a surprise guest. Young readers will delight in the comic complications that follow when a little boy entertains a gregarious moose."From the first toss of a muffin to the final scene in which the day's activities culminate in a messy array and the story comes full circle, readers gladly follow a moose and . . . young boy in this lively sequel to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Numeroff presents the energetic sequence of events in stream-of-consciousness fashion . . . just the right springboard for Bond's distinct, pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings. Librarians will have trouble keeping this book on the shelf." ?SLJ.

"If you give a moose a muffin, he'll want some jam to go with it." So begins the most logical silliness to be found anywhere--at least since Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrator Felicia Bond's If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Readers will follow a young boy and his voracious visitor through a series of antlered antics: jam reveries and puppet shows and big messes. It all makes perfect sense, really, once you stop to think about it. What moose wouldn't want to borrow a sweater when it's cold outside? And why shouldn't the loose button on the sweater remind him of his grandmother? Bond's cleverly detailed, witty illustrations perfectly complement Numeroff's deadpan style. Through just a few deft words and brush strokes, the reader gets a real sense of the unique personalities of the two characters. Children will relate easily to the full-circle reasoning of the story, while picking up the concept of cause and effect. The moral of the story? Keep plenty of muffin mix and blackberry jam in your cupboard. You never know who may drop by. (Great read aloud, ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars Not just for children.......2007-07-09

I purchased this book for office instruction. Read it and you will be amazed at its applications. A funny way to introduce a training topic. Not just for children.

5 out of 5 stars My son has it memorized!!.......2007-04-03

I love this book. It's so fun, and really has the reader guessing "what else?" I don't particularly like the rest of the series because they're set up the same -- same format, so kind of boring after the first one. But, my 6-year-old loves this one. Very original.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed by Kids & Adults.......2007-03-24

My pre-teen & teenage daughters both loved this book (back in the day), and now my 4 year old niece is enjoying it as well (along with the rest of the books in this series). This book is funny as well as engaging, and I would highly recommend it for a pre-school or early-school age child.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong!.......2007-01-13

This book is so clever and funny. This is now my favorite childrens books. My son loves this one and thinks it's funny that the moose makes sock puppets. A great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Another read for parents and kids.......2006-12-16

I found the more I enjoyed, laughed and became kid-like in reading this, the more it became a favorite. Kids love to be able to guess the next step and that is a great thing about this book. Even after re-reading over and over, having her guess the next step makes this book soo well loved.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook for someone who loves to bake!.......2007-01-09

I tried Tate's chocolate chip cookies that I bought in a gourmet food shop and they were awesome! I found the cookbook at amazon and it's filled with lots of great recipes for cookies, cakes, etc. Good baking tips, too! I've made the chocolate chip cookies and they came out really good...not quite as crisp as the originals, but I'm still perfecting my technique!

4 out of 5 stars Does it have the recipe for Kathleen's Chocolate Mousse Cake?.......2006-11-22

I am thinking of buying this book. Does it have the recipe for Kathleen's Chocolate Mousse Cake? I used to buy it at Kathleen's (now Tate's), but I don't want to spend a fortune having it sent to me, I'd rather make it myself.

5 out of 5 stars Must have in your collection.......2006-08-23

No kidding... by far the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted (sorry grammie!) You will not regret picking up this cookbook with easy to follow instructions and fabulous tasty recipes. My daughter and I have really enjoyed baking in the kitchen together and sharing our treats with friends and family. A MUST for anyone who enjoys baking.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-03-04

I gave my sister this as a gift and she absolutely loves it. Many of the recipes do not require the use of a scone pan so one does not have to make this additional purchase. The recipes are also very easy to follow and contain ingredients that many people already have on hand in their cupboard. A must for anyone who wants to start to bake and enjoy the delight of scones....

4 out of 5 stars eating good.......2007-01-04

so far, have only made a few of the recipes in this tiny, but very full book. And all have come out just fine! Even my Irish Mother-in-Law found NO fault with the Irish Soda Bread scones. This pursuit of scones started because my sweetie fell in love with a local bakery's cherry scones, and while there is no recipe in here for cherry scones, I just made the buttermilk scones with dried cherries and he gobbled them down. No better compliment!

Most of what we've found locally have been cookie like and he likes cakey textured scones (so do I). Here the recipes specially say which ones are cookie like.

This is a tiny book, but as most reviews state, lots of good tasty treats! BUT this NOT for those who are looking to CUT their calories!

3 out of 5 stars a good gift item.......2006-03-03

The book seems to be good, although I was taken aback when I saw how tiny (literally) the book actually is... It seems like a nice book to put in a gift basket with cooking items and ingredients for scones - which I have decided to do for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars A little gem!.......2005-07-21

I bought this at my local tea shop upon the owner's recommendation. If you want a nuts & bolts book of great recipes, this is it. My husband loves the chocolate orange scones. My children love the brownie scones, and I love the orange-cranberry scones. All types are included, not just "sweet" scones. I haven't made a bad one yet!

5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook.......2005-02-07

I must say I really like this book also. I had never made my own scones before (I usually buy them from Starbucks). But this book along with the scone pan made it so easy and less expensive! The only thing I wish is that the book was bigger, being so small it gets lost in the shelve with all my biiger cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, easy read.......2007-09-04

If you liked the previous 2 Hannah Swensen mysteries Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) and Strawberry Shortcake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery (A Hannah Swensen Murder), you'll like this one just as much. It is a quick, easy read, and very entertaining. Great recipes too - makes me want to bake!

3 out of 5 stars good, but not my favorite.......2007-05-21

I thought the book was good, but nothing really made it stand out either. People will like it because it is a series and there are lots of them and it's a genre that has a following. Strikes me as very similar to the "The Cat Who..." series as far as one dimensional characterizations and story style. The recipes are a fun addition and actually work as part of the story rather than being a gimmick like some "mysteries with recipes" I've read have been... though I wonder how Hannah's bakery stays in business, the recipes I've tried aren't that great. The Blue Blueberry Muffins didn't taste very much like blueberry, were too sweet and were NOT blue, more a nasty battleship gray! All in all a comfortable series to turn to with generally likeable characters but not at the head of the reading list for me.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant but conventional cosy.......2006-09-23

Hannah Swensen is the baker of delicious pastries, as well as the amatuer sleuth that keeps running into dead bodies in a small Minnesota town. Her investigative technique is straightforward and not very imaginative, but the delicious recipes and the warm personal interplay make it for a satisfying and occasionally funny read. One or two of the supporting characters are interesting, but most others are rather flat plot devices, including the victim.

The book does not demand much exertion from the reader, and neither strives for nor achieves a deep emotional engagement, but it works admirably as a cosy diversion.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COZY MYSTERY SERIES.......2006-08-11

These mysteries are COZY and INTERESTING and GOOD!!! They are perfect!!! I could not ask for a better mystery!!! Not only is the setting and atmosphere cozy, but the clues, story line, and pacing are perfect! This author definitely has talent!!! The clues are perfectly and cleverly crafted and lead to the mystery solving. And the characters - you feel like you know them!!! I love this small town and all the characters. Not just the main characters, but the other characters have purpose and meaning in this book.

In this book, cooking celebrity Connie Mac came to town and had to use Hannah's oven in her cookie shop one evening. Hannah, the main character, came to her cookie shop the next morning, and instead of finding a clean oven, she found a dead body.

Hannah was determined to find out who the killer was, and why they did it. All the twists and surprises made the book that much more interesting.

This book made me so hungry for muffins - you wouldn't believe how many I ate while reading the book!

3 out of 5 stars Yummy ! Yummy !.......2006-02-21

Cooking and Baking are steady hobbies at our place.
So, when we saw the food titles of Joanne Fluke mystery novels,
we had not only to read but also to test the recipes: SURPRISE!
they work !!! The Blue Blueberry Muffins are now regular staples
of our breakfast.
As for the book itself, it is entertaining yet, the conclusion
came as too, too much unexpected; we would have wished for maybe
a little more hints along our reading. Nevertheless, we bought
more of the series, and are still enjoying the reading and, the
recipes indeed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The healthiest and best tasting.......2002-06-19

I've never done this-write a review. But someone gave this book only 2 stars, and that really bothers me. The author's other baking books, now almost impossible to find, were very highly rated, and rightly, and this one is the best of them all-and comprehensive.
Oh, yes, there are a few ingredients you'll need to buy at a health food store. BUT, well worth the trip.
Bake up a batch of her wonderful muffins, and watch your kids devour them as mine did. I made a batch of the apple pecan, by choice, to start my family off on a cross-country trip-they are special.
The cookies are unbelievable. The baked goods too.
There are many ideas for substitutions, and many ideas for those special needs-like diabetes, coronary artery disease, allergies (the wheat-free, egg-free, sugar-free, low-fat, etc.) AND everything not only tastes good, but also is good for you, loaded with nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, vegetables....
Easy to follow instructions, flawless recipes. Delicious results, for those of us who don't eat white bread. For those who do, expand your horizons.
Really, this book is a stand out in health-oriented baking-I should know, I've bought them all. I can promise you two things: one, you will not like every recipe, some you won't even try; and two, you will love most of the recipes and find yourself making them again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Healthy, but not easy.......2000-12-03

Jane Kinderlehrer has a lot of creative ideas for muffin recipes, but many key ingredients are obscure (lecithin granules) or take extra time to prepare (a special concoction of seeds & granola). Many healthy items are used as additives, put into many of the recipes, rather than with an eye toward creating a uniquely delicious item. I guess if you're looking for how to sneak in lots of nutrients when you bake, this book might be helpful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent bread baking book.......2006-10-18

This is definitely the ultimate book for baking all sorts of bread meals. Corn bread, scones, gingerbread, pretty much ANYTHING you want to know about cooking bread can be found in this very convenient book. The book does a nice job of showing you how easy it is to cook anything related to bread. It's also a pretty good learning experience, personally.

3 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2004-12-01

This a decent, but not outstanding collection of quick bread recipes. Having a complete assembly of recipes in one book is a great convenience. Normally, I have to flip through a number of cookbooks to get the quick bread I want, since each one has only a few such recipes. The recipes themselves, however, are pretty standard, and you probably already many similar recipes in the baking books you have on your bookshelf. I do recommend this one, but only because of the convenience of having all the quick bread recipes in one place. The main advantage is that when you are looking for a very good quick bread recipe, you only have to search through this book, rather than having a pile of a dozen or so baking books on your desk.

All of the recipes in the cornbread chapter have flour, rather than the genuine article that does not have flour. The muffin chapter was pretty pitiful, as was the coffee cakes. The pancake chapter would be more useful if the author described the character of the particular pancake (light and fluffy, thick and rich, thin and rubbery-in the good sense, spidery and lacy, etc.) rather than regale you with anecdotal stories. There are several rare and valuable crepe recipes, but the recipes for the fillings are below average. A significant minority of the recipes seems to be nothing more than manuscript padding; I am not convinced that the author actually tested all of the recipes (viz: the ones that add cooked rice, since they were either gritty or lumpy; the recipes for microwave fruit jam were laughable, not to mention dangerous). Most of the waffle recipes are the wierd ones requiring egg whites beaten to soft peaks. The author has also picked up the bad habit of adding whole grains and/or dried fruit to just about everything for a healthy and nutritious treat (derived from either "Recipe/Diet for a Small Planet", the worst cookbooks ever, or else British baking books).

The last chapter is a reasonably useful compendium of ingredients, techniques, and equipment. Some sort of table of contents of this chapter would have been useful. The sections on eggs, salt, sugar and oil are predominantly wrong. Several recipes call for beaten egg whites, but detailed instructions for doing so are not forthcoming.

It has chapters on: loaf breads, gingerbreads, cornbreads, coffee cakes, muffins, pancakes, crepes, waffles, popovers, dumplings, scones, and biscuits.

5 out of 5 stars The Bread Queen.......2002-09-19

I love this book because our family is a "Sunday Brunch" crowd. We make a brunch each and every Sunday and have a great time. Of course there is always a sweet bread/coffee cake and most of the time it comes from this book or the author's other book: Breakfast Breads - which I also highly recommend.

Who wouldn't want to wake up to the smell of homemade bread (even if it's quick bread) and fresh coffee?

I hope you enjoy it as much we do!

4 out of 5 stars Fast, simple and tasty breakfast goods.......2002-06-20

I am the same as Kelly. I borrow the book from the library and try a couple recipes to make sure it tastes good and then buy the book. This book offers alternatives to the recipes which I like. Sometimes you don't want to make the same thing over and over again although you like it the first time and the alternatives add a different twist. The cranberry scone was absolutely DELICIOUS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Breakfast gets even better!!!.......2001-05-08

This is a great baking book! Wonderful waffle recipes, the Hungarian Sour Cream Coffee Cake is great (my sister ate 1/2 in one sitting!), my husband loved the Fresh Apple Coffee Cake. I can't wait to try the lemon-poppyseed-saffron bread! I always test-cook from the library's copy before I buy. This is a cookbook worth buying for my collection. I also like the troubleshooting section in the beginning of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie Muffin is Absolutely the Best Spy in the Biz.......2005-07-31

There's a new boss at England's spy shop and he's got Charlie Muffin working for his number two, a woman. This is a new experience for Charlie, but one he tells himself he can live with. When he finally gets the call to meet with her, he hopes she's going to give him a field assignment, but alas, she tells him that it's time for him to pass on his vast experience to another and she assigns him an apprentice. Charlie's job, to teach him what he couldn't learn in spy school, those little secrets that are so vital in the field, in short, how to survive.

Charlie doesn't fancy himself as a teacher, but he's determined to do the job to the best of his ability. Maybe if he does exceptionally well, they'll put him back on the active duty roster. However when his apprentice graduates, they send him to China to try and get out a priest-spy whose cover has been blown and they leave Charlie in place in London. The apprentice is captured and now Charlie's bosses send for him to go in and get out the priest while the apprentice languishes in a Chinese prison.

Meanwhile in Russia Natalia, Charlie's old flame, is living with his child, a son Charlie knows nothing about. While he has often wondered what had become of her, he'd never believe that she is now the head of Russian intelligence and she's using her power to try and find out what happened to him.

Back in China, Charlie fails to get the priest out and barely escapes with his life. His plan had been sound, so he knows somebody has betrayed him. Who? And will he find out about his son? And if he does, what will he do about it? As I used to say all those years ago when I gave book reports in grade school, "You'll have to read the book to find out."

As usual Brian Freemantle has delivered up the kind of book that will leave you with a laugh and a thorough respect for his knowledge of how the secret world of spies integrates with politics and every day life. Muffin is a delightful character who has been around for almost ever and hopefully will be around for a long time to come. There is absolutely no spy, living or dead, who understands the trade craft as well as Charlie Muffin.

2 out of 5 stars Slow and Old.......2002-04-16

Some of his other work is much better. This book seams rushed, almost like the author did not want to take the time to really develop either the story or the characters. Because of the light development it does not hold your attention. I just did not believe the characters. I kept waiting for it to get better which is why I toughed it out to the end, but I was disappointed overall.

Interesting, informative, and very helpful. Looking forward to more of the same in cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for outdoor cooking!.......2006-11-11

This book contains fabulous recipes that can be made at home as well without using a Dutch oven. It is filled with ideas that are simple and fast to prepare with easily obtained ingredients. The author uses recipes that have been tried and refined by people whose business it is to entertain and please hungry folks with delicious food. These recipes are a notch above most one-pot recipes I have encountered. I purchased one as a gift for my outdoor-loving friends and ended up ordering one for my home as well.

3 out of 5 stars Too Complicated.......2006-09-27

All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive). I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great receipes, assumes basic skill however.......2005-09-29

I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen. I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that.

3 out of 5 stars Errors in ingredient quantities.......2002-05-12

Be careful as you mix from this book. It makes me wonder whether the previous reviewers actually used the recipes to make muffins. Page 12 1 cup(4 oz/125g) page 17 2 cups (10 oz/315g)

page 18 1 cup (5 oz/155g) 1 cup (2 1/2 oz/80g) 1/2 cup (3 1/2 oz/105g)

The errors are on about every other page as one continues through the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fool-proof Recipes.......2002-02-28

I've tried almost every recipe in this book and they come out perfectly without fail. Excellent book for the pro or novice. Easy to find ingredients and easy to follow instructions. Pictures accompany recipes. Final product usually resembles picture. Most people will find that these recipes will yield the desired result.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Selection of Easy-to-Follow Recipes.......2000-11-03

This book has a nice combination of tried-and-true favorites (corn muffins, banana bread) and creative, newer recipes (Buckwheat bread, triple-chocolate muffins). I've tried several and I always get rave reviews. The oatmeal raisin made with buttermilk is a standard at office parties. The recipes are easy and every recipe is pictured in color! I think this book is great additon to any cooks collection.

4 out of 5 stars Yum!.......1998-06-27

A great little book with about 50 recipes for both sweet and savory muffins & quick breads. Don't expect a tome here, this is a mini cookbook, but still well done. Recipes are clear and easy. I've tried about 15 of them and the results have all been good.
After you make a handful of these recipes, you'll get a good feel for muffin basics & venture out on your own. Muffin inventing has become a favorite past time of mine since I got this book. (My Cherry-Cheese Muffins are pretty darn good!)
The book's Poppyseed Muffin recipe has become a favorite of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars yummy!.......2007-04-14

i was able to trick my husband (who thinks he hates wheat free food) into really enjoying several things from this book. i am so glad that this book is in my collection. it is very cool with all of the explinations of different flours, and other baking essentials. it is also written in grams and cups which could be very helpful. one more thing that i likes is that is lists things like calories, protien and the likes. very good book!

5 out of 5 stars Really is the "Best Ever".......2007-02-24

Really like this book. It has some great recipes and wonderful solutions to the Gluten-Free problem many people face. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Healthy GF Baking.......2006-09-30

If you are gluten free and also health conscious (not always the same thing), this book is for you. I was a "health nut" before our family decided to go gluten free, and was left discouraged by some of the best-selling GF cookbooks out there--lots of white rice flours used, not much quinoa and healther grains used, etc.

While you will find rice and potato flours in some of these recipes, you will also find the more "exotic" and healthful flours used extensively, amaranth, sorghum, and quinoa. The recipes taste good (judged by my gluten/carb addicted husband) and I know they are good to give to my kids who think raisins and figs are a big treat (you get the point :-). Should have "healthy" in the title, too. Worth the buy.

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2006-09-24

The good...this book has great ideas and many of the recipes are very good. The muffins I've tried (with the exception of the carrot one) turn out very well, the banana-flax muffin is awesome and healthy, my two-year old loves it. The sour-milk bread has a great flavor and turns out well as long as I don't add the water and take out some of the sugar. The hazelnut brownies were okay, but really weird.

The bad... as another reviewer has noted, there are several typos throughout the book. While I have by no means made all of the recipes, in my opinion I have found far too many typos for a professionally published book. There's a carrot muffin recipe, that if followed, makes more of a carrot soup instead of carrot muffin batter. I also find the organization of the recipes to be poor (i.e. liquid ingredients in the "dry" list). While some of the omissions and extras in the recipes don't present much a problem for seasoned bakers of gluten-free foods, if you are new to this game, you might find this book very frustrating. However, if you are looking for some new inspiration, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ever.......2005-11-15

While this well written and informative book is designed primarily to appeal to those unable to tolerate wheat and gluten it should not be restricted to only the digestively challenged. If, like me, you enjoy baking you will be intrigued and inspired by all the many alternative flours available and the techniques employed in using them. You'll want to try out the many recipes for cakes, cookies, muffins, and other goodies, and you`ll be rewarded by the tasty results. I especially liked the banana nut muffins.
