I love to collect cookbooks, but insist on having full nutritional breakdown and healthy recipes. This book is going to quickly become one of my favorites. The recipes are short, using natural ingredients, and healthy. There are many great new ideas for boneless chicken, and ideas for everything from appetizers to desserts. The very first recipe, Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms, looks wonderful, and will be one of the first I will try. I bought a copy for myself and one as a gift for a friend, and definitely recommend it.

The AHA is another industry vested joke. This book is full of processed sugar, white flour, light/lite this and that (meaning a sugar substitute usually containing aspertame or saccharin is used) and other low fat bastardized poisons. When will the public wake up to this huge cholesterol/low fat/statin drug/heart disease farse. Do some honest research, discover the facts and forget this dogma.

On the other hand...use this book, eat what is recommended, and you'll have so many problems you will not notice any one in particular. I'm sure the junk in the book tastes just fine.

This book is great! As a co-recipe developer on this book I am proud to say that i had a part in the fantastic recipes. Try the pecan cookies or the german chocolate cake. The Orange Bread pudding with sauce is so rich you will need a glass of milk. I have been teaching "fattening" pastry classes for years and this year I replaced a few of the recipes with these and people do not even know. Try it on your family!

The nutritional information provided is invaluable, the recipes are easy and taste fabulous, and the organizational style is intuitive. I paid my library $60 so I could keep this book, and it was worth it. $16 is a paltry sum that I would pay in a heartbeat. This book would make a good gift, for my unskilled and unhealthconscious relatives.

I collect cookbooks and this is one of my favorites. All of the recipes are quick to prepare and don't require a lot of ingredients. Hinman does a wonderful job of creating delicious recipes with a minimum of fuss. This is one of the few cookbooks that I own (and I own a lot!) that I constantly reach for when I don't want to spend a lot of time searching for something tasty to prepare because I know it never lets me down. My favorite recipe is Baked ziti goes Southwest.

    I bought this book after using The New Basics as my food bible for years. What a disappointment! I made a baked beans recipe for my son's birthday party that was inedible, and my husband had to run out for canned beans at the last minute. We also made a chestnut-mashed potato recipe that tells you to boil the chestnuts (I was assuming so that then you would peel them), but it didn't say to peel them, how to peel them, if you should peel them. So we put them in the blender, and just followed the recipe, trussting it. What a mess! This book needs better instructions, and most of the recipes I have prepared aren't very good at all.

    My copy of this cookbook is well-thumbed with pages folded down and notes written in the margins, testifying to its position as my favorite cookbook for well over five years. I entertain friends for dinner on average of once a week, and many of the recipes in this book have become consistent lower-fat favorites. The breakfast recipes are especially good. The German pancake, morning glory muffins, and raspberry muffins are winners. The all green fruit salad is great, the corn and black bean salad is a never-fail, and the recipe for "A Perfect Little Spanish Cake" is partly why my husband fell in love with me when I made it for him in a heart-shaped pan for Valentine's Day when we were dating! I would never part with this cookbook.

    It turns out that this is the public relations member of the Silver Palate team, not the cook. The recipes read well and some turn out to be delicious, but you can't count on it. I, for one, don't have time to spend cooking from a book that I know gives me a fifty-fifty chance for a tasty result and that contains a number of errors. I gave my copy to Goodwill.

    I was given this book as a gift in maybe 1994 but never had the counterspace to make its recipes on until I got married in 2000! Since then, my husband and I have often enjoyed meals from it. In a nutshell, it is a fabulous means of eating healthy but flavorfully and without a lot of fat! Some of its pros: with each recipe is given the calorie, fat, cholesterol, and carb content of it as well as how many people it serves; it offers an abundance of informative, health-conscious information on some of its pages (such as a section listing a variety of fruits and vegetables and the nutritional benefits of each one, as well as a section that defines and explains things about cholesterol, fat, sodium, etc. in relation to the body); on pages throughout, complete meal menus using recipes that complement each other well are suggested; the recipes are quaintly classified by seasons, holidays, and even by day and time of day--i.e., morning/breakfast, "Afternoon Tea", "Mother's Day Brunch", "Sunday Evening Dinner," etc. Recipes involve more prep time than your average cookbook recipe (like Betty Crocker, for instance), but that's because every single ingredient you use is FRESH! NO CANNED and NO FROZEN stuff. So, your body is guaranteed optimum taste and nutrition! I must add that my husband has never been big on vegetables; yet, whatever vegetable side I've made from this book so far, he has scarfed it down with a smile! I never truly enjoyed cooking until I started using this book. It revealed to me that I CAN make gourmet-tasting meals, and THAT by itself is a swell reward!

    I was thrilled to find Great Good Food. I used to make everything out the of the Silver Palate cookbooks and New Basics. However, all of the recipes were so calorie-laden. So, now I make many of my old favorites only lighter (and better). I also apply her "lightening" methods to recipes from the original books. Rosso's grouping of the recipes by season is nothing new. The Silver Palate Good Times cookbook is also organized in this fashion, and it is rated one of the best cookbooks. Familiarize yourself with the index (very complete), and you will be more than satisfied. As for the ingredients not being readily available, if one does any kind of cooking, these are things that you already have, or needed an excuse to buy.

    I thoroughly recommend this book. The recipes are delicious, easy to prepare, and do not use expensive, hard-to-get ingredients, a definite plus in my opinion. I particularly enjoyed the Chicken with Artichokes recipe. The blending of the the flavours of artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes gives a definite "lift" to the chicken meat without being too spicy. This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever used. One of the other reasons I favour this book is because the recipes are low-fat. My husband is diabetic and I know I can use the recipes in this book to serve tasty meals that are also compatible with his diet. I consider "Low-fat and luscious Italian" a "must" for anyone who enjoys cooking, especially healthy cooking. The recipes are great for both everday meals and also for dinner parties. An absolutely marvellous book.

      Gadia's self-published book begins with a lesson in basic nutrition, and includes a nutritional breakdown for all 100-plus recipes.       I'm relatively new to Indian food. Fortunately I live in Chicago where I have access to so many great restaurants. But I can't eat out all the time. I try to eat healthy but that leads to pretty bland meals. I am so happy to see Madhu has my same focus on healthy eating. All the flavor comes from the spices. I almost never cook with spices but this book is changing me forever. If you are new to Indian cooking too, you will need to spend about $30 on spices (and I shopped at Whole Foods so you can probably find them cheaper elsewhere). But I was glad to pay it after I made my first meal. I swear, just like at a restaurants. I made curry chicken, naan, green beans, and rice pudding. I love how she lists each recipe by an English name and the Indian name. That is really the best part of the book, it's so accessible to someone who is not too familiar with Indian language or ingredients. I really love her concise but vibrant introductory sections. It really got me more excited to run out to the store and get what I needed to begin cooking. It's only like 8-10 spices that you use over and over in all different combinations in the recipes. And a little bottle of each will go a long way. The rest of the ingredients as so basic: chicken, onions, tomatoes, flour, vegetable oil. Yes the recipes are generally for 6 people (it's just my husband and I) but so many of the entrees are great to make in large quantities to have for a couple meals. One other great thing is that she indicates where the hot spice is optional. My husband and I had a great time cooking our first Indian meal and my mom is coming over next weekend to do the same. Thanks for such a great book Madhu!

      New Indian Home Cooking is a winner!!! Have prepared at least half of the recipes and there is not a bad one in the bunch. I was fortunate enough to take a cooking class from Madhu Gadia - well after I had purchased her book - and she was delightful. Once you purchase the spices, which are very inexpensive, you are in business. Cannot go wrong with this purchase!!

      I probably wouldn't have bought this book if it had still been under its hardcover title "Lite and Luscious Indian Cuisine" (or something like that). I am suspicious of overtly health-conscious food (and cutesy misspelling), although Indian food tends to work pretty well even when low fat. It is pretty easy to adjust these recipes, though, by using full-fat yogurt, ghee, etc.

      The strength of this book is that it provides many non-main course recipes, such as snacks, breads, drinks, etc. This is home cooking, not restaurant cooking.

      There are a few drawbacks. The book barely has 100 recipes, so if you buy a big bag of toor dal, there are only a few things you can do with it. I would have preferred more recipes and less advice on healthy eating (but others may disagree). While the recipes are generally easy to make, this isn't a book that does much hand-holding. Other cookbooks provide step-by-step instructions; this does not. A few times I've wondered whether my dish was supposed to come out a certain way, but there are no pictures.

      Some of the recipes worked for me, but some seem under-spiced.

      I purchased this book because of the rave reviews and I do like it. I liked reading about the history of Indian cooking, even though 55 pages seemed a bit much.

      The only negative is that I am cooking for myself, and all the recepies seem layed out for big families. Three pounds of chicken? I would have to eat the same thing for a month! If I was a more experienced Indian cook, maybe I could figure out how to reduce the amount, but as a beginner I like to stick to the recipe at the beginning.

      If you are single, buy a book that maybe cooks for smaller portions, not to serve 6.

      My sister gave me this book years ago. Not being into cooking at the time, I didn't even open it until recently. I've discovered a new hobby and a new joy---cooking! For a total novice like me, the authors make it simple and easy. Their recipes are excellent...full of flavor, using spices well, tasty but low fat. I am especially enjoying their section on grains and am having an adventure experimenting with millet, kasha, and brown rice. I would imagine that more experienced cooks too would like this book; there are some recipes that look more complex. But the 9-10 ones that I've tried have been quick and easy for a beginner. If you want healthy, vegetarian food that tastes great and doesn't require you to be a gormet chef, get this book!

      I bought this book several years ago used and have dog earred most of the pages.
      The recipes are simple for the most part with common ingredients. Some of the recipes are a little bland for my taste but are easily tweaked to provide more robust seasoning. Many rely on pasta as a main ingredient.
      There are lots of suggestions on ways to use tofu and how to make it family friendly including many that I've never seen anywhere else.
      There are tons of recipes to make creamy sauces with less or no fat.
      Anyone looking to reduce their fat or explore vegetarian eating should consider this a staple in their recipe collection.

      originally purchased this cookbook for the nutritional breakdown that is listed @ bottom of every recipe, I was watching my protein level due to some disturbing numbers from medical tests,I
      found that I liked every recipe I tried they all tasted really good, a few of them were a little bland but simply by slightly increasing the spices that they called for took care of that. Not only were the recipes good but my cholesteral improved from 256 to 172, blood sugar greatly improved, I've lost weight as long as I stay with it, and too much protein situation improved to the point of seeing the specialist every 6 months instead of every 6 weeks. I feel much better eating this way, a big thanks to the author.

      I love this cookbook. I've had it for years and have tried countless recipes, all of which turn out deliciously. Alot of the recipes can be made in little time, and with common ingredients. They are also economical, easy and delicious. It has something for an elegant dinner and something for a quick and easy dinner. GET this book. It is totally worth it.
