5 out of 5 stars Best guide for Happy Meal toy collectors!.......1997-08-27

I consider this to be the McDonald's collector's premier guide. Full-color photos show you exactly what you're looking for. Variations are also listed, and usually shown, so you'll know to look for that horse with a green base and without! Translites, buttons, and all the other items associated with a promo are listed with values. Although this book only goes through early 1995, you can order supplements by writing to the author (address included in the book). If you're serious about collecting (or selling) McD's Happy Meal toys, you must have this book

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed with inaccuracies re NZ / AUS toys.......1997-12-29

I am a NZ collector and have kept records for last 5 1/2 years which do not agree with descriptions, dates and other catalog info published in this book. Having written to Author with correction list, like a few others have also done, I was disappointed with the total nil-response. Many NZ collectors are still trying to find toys that were never released here, though the book says otherwise. Pictures etc still helpful for reference regarding some countries.

5 out of 5 stars Expand your collection with non-US toys!.......1997-11-23

You may have never thought you'd find a "foreign" McD's toy at a garage sale in Kansas, but it happens! Sometimes European toys are used as fill-ins here in the US, or someone may have taken a vacation and eaten at McD's! The foreign toys are very exciting and even if they parallel a promo in the US (such as Disney's "Aladdin"), they aren't always the same toys. Full-color photos let you know exactly what you have and what you need to finish that set.

5 out of 5 stars A great book........1997-07-07

This book includes lots and lots of pictures of Happy Meal Toys issued around the World. The ckeck-off boxes make it very easy to organize and keep track of your collection. It is also very useful in finding out which toys were issued and when

I was mislead to believe this book contained Happy Meal toys from 1999 when, in fact, it only had the first couple promotions from 1999. If you are looking for a guide to pre-1999 Happy Meal toys, this book has great pictures, descriptions and price guidelines. Also has a good section on foreign Happy Meal toys.

I checked this book out of the library and just loved it. It offers lots of interesting recipe ideas such as cinnamon-potato pancakes, home-made fortune cookies, tiny egg bowls, and cheese & fruitwich. A month of menu ideas is given along with international themed menus. The international menus are very cute and include American, Greek, Swiss, Hawaiian, French, Middle East, Mexican, Indian, and Italian Day. There are also lots of helpful and inspirational ideas for making a lunch box more creative for elementary aged children.

5 out of 5 stars No More Lunch Box Blues!.......2001-02-05

Does your child bring their lunch box home with half-eaten, picked-at food? Do the items sent to school end up on the "trade table" in exchange for "more desirable" items? Do your kids roll their eyes at the menu for their lunch box that day? Then this is the book for you! Authors Meredith Brokaw (wife of Tom Brokaw), Annie Gilbar and Jill Weber pack this delightful book full of over 100 tempting and nutritious recipes sure to make your child the want to actually keep and eat their lunch, and look forward to the fun, tasty, nutritious treats inside. These recipes are not difficult to make; nor do they require obscure ingredients--but they do add a touch of creativity and a lot of love. This book is full of terrific ideas!

    Book Description

Beware—the fate of the world just might rest in the paws of a basset hound and a pair of clueless aliens!
Lunchbox is your average basset hound: round, floppy, and not too bright . . . until he’s abducted by aliens. Then he suddenly becomes a lean, mean, garbage-machine-making, uh, machine.

Frazz and Grunfloz, the hapless aliens who abducted Lunchbox, have set him the task of converting Earth’s trash into froonga, a food adored by aliens and dogs alike. Will Lunchbox and his boy, Nate, solve the world’s garbage crisis and form the first interplanetary alliance? Or will the fate of the whole solar system come to rest on whether Lunchbox can ever learn to catch a Frisbee?

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-02-05

This book balances the fine line between good for kids and good for adults. The author makes the story serious and funny at the same time, with an example of the fact the aliens are running out of food and they have to depend on a fat basset hound who isn't exactly the sharpest tack in the bunch, until he gets turned into a genius that could make Bill Gates look like a dummy except for the fact that he can't talk... The story moves along fluently with Nate, the owner having to help Lunchbox, the dog, build a machine, make the aliens happy, and get his parents to understand what is going on.

5 out of 5 stars Great humor, fun for adults too.......2007-01-01

I love this book! The characters are complex and charming, it's funny for kids and adults and best of all, Fields does not "talk down" to kids. He toes that difficult line between making a book accessible and interesting to children and interesting at the same time. I recommend it!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2006-11-20

This is a great book! Note to parents: If your kid likes books and spends too much time in front of the TV, get them this book! True, it has weird, made up words, like rurfroo and plookie, but that's why it's a challenging, but interesting book. It's funny and the author had a great sense of what he wanted when he wrote it: a book kids and adults alike will love. Oh, and here is how to pronounce Schwozzwort: Skwoz-wort. Yeah, I know, it's a tough word to spell and pronounce right without the author saying it straight to you, which is why that is there. But anyway, GET THIS BOOK! KIDS AND ADULTS LOVE IT!

    5 out of 5 stars A zany tale evolves........2006-11-06

Lunchbox is a basset hound who's been stolen by aliens, who change him into a garbage-machine-making machine. His new task is to change Earth's trash into a food adored by aliens and dogs: will Lunchbox and his boy solve the world's garbage crisis in the process of forming interplanetary friendships? A zany tale evolves.

5 out of 5 stars Bassett to the rescue!.......2006-10-11

This charming book tells how a loveable bassett hound named Lunchbox saves the world from alien interference and helps out his boy's family at the same time. The book alternates between earth and a spaceship with two amusing aliens who remind me of a few people I've known. The author's humor is just right for the age group and his writing has a wry touch that adults will be amused by as well. The author has a great ear for conversation and he also knows what matters to boys and girls. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for parents who travel.......2002-06-22

My husband and I travel together on business and are sometimes away from our girls for a week at a time. I make an envelope for each child for each day we'll be gone and put a couple of pages of these stories inside each envelope. Our girls are very enthusiastic about reading the fun stories and knowing that when the story is finished, mom and dad will be home. The stories are a bit suspenseful and possibly even frightening for young children. They are probably most appropriate for 7-12 year olds, depending on reading skill level for 7 year-olds. I wish that there were more than the two volumes that currently exist!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty little book...........2000-04-04

I loved this book! It was so intruiging I couldn`t put it down, so instead of reading a page of it every day at lunch, I read it like a regular book, tons at a time! I highly recommend this book for people of all ages.

Treasure one of the greatest forms of pop art in America--the metal lunch box. This is undoubtedly the most comprehensive and colorful compilation of metal lunch boxes ever published. Memories of childhood buddies carried to school each day are beautifully photographed from every angle to display the front, the back and the bands of every box. With sections on care and cleaning, a list of manufacturers, and color photographs of the over 500 boxes themselves, the authors have created a wonderful guide to an entertaining field in pop culture. The book includes foreign boxes and carry-alls as well as a section on advertising and original art.

There are indeed some lovely shots of classic lunch kits in this volume. However, I have yet to find a book that approaches the thoroughness, photographic appeal, or wit of the two books by the fellow who started it all, Scott Bruce. If you are a beginning collector, the best thing you can do is get hold of the Bruce books for a comprehensive history and background, and then sign on to www.lunchboxpad.com, a website run by a young collector, for a realistic current price guide.

If you ever owned, or wanted to own a lunchbox from the 50's through the 80's, this is the book for you. This book provides fond memories of school days, mom's lunches and "what was cool!". Full color photographs of the boxes and thermoses from various angles really make it a must for someone interested in lunchbox collecting or for someone just looking for a fond recollection of a simpler day gone by...
