Mostly Recipes.......2007-04-30
There's a lot of good information here. As a teacher of twenty-five years, and as a parent, I've dealt with more than my share of overweight kids, and read everything that comes along on the subject. And although this book is one of the better ones out there, I've been recommending the CD talk "The Fat Kid's Diet: Stop Childhood Obesity In Your Home," available here at Amazon, to the parents who come to me with their concerns. It's brief, sensible, and right to the point.
Very Helpful.......2007-01-03
I found this book to be very helfpul in my never-ending quest to come up with meal ideas for my toddler that are healthy and appealing to him. The meals really are easy to prepare and I've yet to strike out in terms of my son actually eating the food. I would definitely rec this book for the recipes and tips geared towards younger, pickier eaters.

Too much sugar, processed food...........2006-06-13
This book was disappointing. For starters, if you're cooking healthy recipes you should not be using instant rice, or canned cream-of-whatever soup. And just because you're cooking for children doesn't mean you have to add sugar to vegetables!
There are a few good recipes but borrow from your library first. I think the early Mollie Katzen cookbooks (Enchanted Broccoli Forest, Moosewood Cookbook) have much healthier recipes.
Pretty Good, But not Great.......2006-02-01
Decent recipes. Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but they're pretty good (the Chunky Apple Muffins are *very* delicious!). However, some recipes do use heavily processed stuff like cream-of-whatever soup, cheez whiz, etc. Ick. :( It's very easy and takes just a few minutes to make a white sauce instead of using a can of cream soup. Not sure why the authors didn't do that instead, as it's much better - both for flavor and health - than the processed stuff.
My biggest complaint is that the cover says that the recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less. Not true for all of them! I can think of several off the top of my head that take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. I wish they wouldn't have advertised what they couldn't deliver.

Great Ideas for Busy, Healthy Eaters.......2007-10-10
My family does not like beans and lentils. I was looking for ways to incorporate these storage items into our diet. I am really excited about the ideas contained in the book.
The recipes use ingredients that are found in your cupboard. They are healthy but not time consuming. There are many ways to hide the beans in food they would normally eat.
I am a lazy cook. I have to be in the mood and feeling good. Being able to give my family healthy meals without spending ages doing it is fantastic. I highly recommend this book to everyone that is looking to cut down or cut out meat in their diet or using up all the beans and lentils in their food storage.

I don't have enough space in this forum to express my total appreciation for this book. I've had it for over a year and I've barley used a fraction of it's valuable ideas. The ones I have used, I've used over and over again! I'm sitting here right now thinking of making some bread. I can either grind the grain by hand or use the recomended grinder I discovered from the book! I'm pretty much all set! A Must Read!

Delicious Easy To Prepare Food - Even My Boyfriend Likes It!.......2000-02-04
I happened upon this book and thought I'd give it a shot. That was a year ago and I still use it a few times a week. The food is normal and delicious! My boyfriend loved almost everything I made from this book because it's stuff you would normally make. There are a few new things you will probably want to try, but also, if you have a favorite meal such as chicken cacciatore, beef stroganoff, or cheesecake this book has the recipe and shows you how to make it healthful and still delicious. I use the weight watchers points system and had no trouble converting recipes. It also gives exchange, fat and calorie values for dieters who use a different program. I highly recommend it! It's worth it!

Not what most people need.......2002-07-30
This book has some fancy recipes in it, but not really what your average American is going to want for an evening meal. Most of the ingredients are not what everyone keeps available at home in their pantries.
There are no pictures.
It does give fat/calorie content, but those of us on Weight Watchers will miss the dietary fiber content.
In all, this book will really only be good for those who want fancy entertaining-type food; not stuff you whip up on a whim.
I liked this cookbook because the recipes are fast & easy........1999-06-09
Even though I enjoy cooking, I really don't have a lot of time to cook. So I liked the recipes in this book because they are simple, fast and easy to make. Especially helpful to me is the Appendix which has the recipes listed by course. The usual divisions for soups, salads, desserts are listed. But also, Pasta, Grain, and Vegetable-based entrees, side dishes, and wraps and sandwiches. They also give the grams of fat per serving(all of the recipes have
< 1 gm/serving) and calories per serving. Some of the recipes have a section, " 99% Fat-Free Fast Strategy" which shows the order of preparation. I was so thrilled with the recipes and the book, I'm back again to look for one of their other 99%Fat-free books.

While I'm sure the authors meant well, they really should state that this is not a cookbook for families with young children. The meals are too sophisticated in taste and design to suit the needs of a person who must take into account feeding young children when menu planning. I feel I wasted my money. But, hey, if you don't have to worry about kids, then this might be the cookbook for you!
NOT American Recipes. Weird stuff!.......1998-12-10
I ordered this book and was very unpleasantly surprised that it didn't have normal, American recipes. It wasn't listed in the description nor explained on "Home Matters", (Discovery 11/98) when it was featured recently, what food types it contained. Too much Thai food! Lots of Yuppie-type food. If you like the following, you will probably like this book: Thai, and lots of sea-food, and things like Gazpacho, Chard, Hong Kong Stew, Arugula, Gnocchi, Polenta, and Fennel & Artichoke Salad. My husband and I don't care for seafood or Thai food. (Only a couple recipes were American.) If I had known it contained these types of foods, I never would have ordered it. But again, if this food suits your tastes, you'll probably like this book.

I have three of Cheryl's cookbooks, but this one gets the most use. Cheryl includes all the information needed to complete her recipies, she also includes variations which are really helpful. I would also highly reccomend her most recent book "More Choices for a Healthy Low-fat You." If you're looking it up by author, keep in mind her last name is now Peters. Great book, a must for all Vegetarians
