This is a huge recipe book filled with hundreds of bread recipes for every type of bread you can think of and a whole lot that you never knew existed. I have tried several of the recipes and they have all turned-out reasonably well.

Many of the recipes in the book require a great deal of manual intervention and shaping, so sure you can make croissant dough in your automatic bread machine--if you transfer the dough in and out of the machine several times, coat butter bits with flour and freeze them, roll out the dough and shape it--but should you? There are also a lot of quick-bread recipes that are often easier to just mix and bake traditionally. In the end, it seems like 75% of the recipes are either so manually intensive that your automatic bread machine is essentially just a nice place to let dough rise or they are so simple without using a bread machine that the machine is just an unnecessary step.

While there is no shortage of recipes in the book, there is a shortage of a few other things: the cheap paperback binding won't lay flat, there is not a single picture in the book; and, most serious, the index is horrible and simply a listing of the recipe names. This is a huge problem in a nearly 700-page recipe book. You cannot find recipes by main ingredients: for instance "Orange Bread with White Chocolate, Apricots, and Walnuts" is listed in the index under "orange" but it is not listed under "white," "chocolate," "apricots," or "walnuts."

If this book were limited to only recipes that are both reasonable to make in an "automatic" bread machine and that benefit in some way from doing so; and also contained a usable index and maybe a few pictures, I would give it a much higher rating.

I'm a newbie to bread making via machine and this book is a God-send. The author goes into detail as to the "why" you need to measure accurately, how your machine does what it does, different types of flours, and general trouble shooting for breadmaking. Yes...great recipies too, but what I really appreciate is understanding HOW great bread is created and finding the secret tips to doing fantastic bread baking. She also includes recipes for things like pasta making (on the dough setting) and other fun things to try. Highly recommended! It's the bible of bread making!

The book was a birthday gift for my sister who just retired and uses her bread machine all the time. She absolutely loved the book and has used it many times already. The illustrations were great and the directions very easy to follow. We've all benefited from this cookbook with lots of delicious breads.

My husband and I have used breadmachines for years. But this book is wonderful. It explains everything there is to know about grains, baking and bread machines. And the recipes are excellent! They really do work. I've tried recipes in other books that just don't seem to work properly, but this book is different.

Old-fashioned bread the new-fashioned way, Betty calls it. Easy, convenient, modern. There's no knead for loafing. Not with that fabulous combination in the kitchen: Betty Crocker and the bread machine.

The construction of this book, first of all, is wonderful. The cover is hard and the binding is heavy, enameled spiral. Each page lays flat on the counter, or you can hold the book open on one arm while doing something with the other hand. This suggests that Betty Crocker wrote her bread-baking cookbook with serious use in mind. She certainly tested her recipes. A variety of bread machines were used, which means that each recipe was tested a number of different times. Betty tells you exactly what kind of flour she used, as well as salt, size of eggs, kind of yeast, etc. She leaves nothing to chance.

Bread machine baking has its own peculiarities, and Betty addresses all these right up front, the hows and how-tos (as well as the whys and wherefores) of getting the perfect loaf every time. There's a troubleshooting section, as well as a frequently asked question section. Then it's right into the recipes, all 130 of them.

There are Good and Savory Loaves (Cheese Onion Bread) and Wholesome Grain Loaves (Toasted Almond Whole Wheat Bread), Fruit and Vegetable Harvest Loaves (Dried Apricot Bread), Smaller Can Be Just Right Loaves (these are one-and-a-half-pound loaves), and then several chapters on breads you start in the bread machine, but finish in the oven. This book has a lot of great recipes; every weekend I make something I haven't made before. They're delicious and fun, and I have yet to make a recipe that didn't work. I just LOVE the strawberry and poppyseed rolls. Every bread recipe has amounts for 2 different sizes of loaves, and there are wonderful illustrations throughout. It's totally worth it.

This is the worst bread machine book I have ever used. Their measurements are off especially with the yeast. I had to adjust many recipes to get decent result. Don't get this book especially if you just got your first bread machine this book will discourage you for using your machine.

This is an AWESOME cookbook, I love the way the recipes are listed in the book, very easy to follow. The ingredients are listed in order to how they should be placed in the machine, there are instruction for 1, 1/2, and 2 lb loaves. The print is large which also makes the recipes easy to follow. I own her whole series of BM cookbooks because I like them so much!! Great variety also--if I have a certain ingredient that I want to use up in my cupboard, 9 times out of 10 I can find a recipe for bread that I can use it in!! Can't say enough good things about this cookbook!!

Lots of great, easy and nutritious recipes. My only complaint would be that my machine comes with a rapid rise selection, and this book does not have that as a choice, so I have to look in the owner's manual recipe book to try and find a similar recipe so I know how much extra yeast to add to the recipe. Kind of a pain, but I still want to get some of her other bread machine cookbooks, because this one is very good!

I've been a fan of bread machines for about a decade now. I've owned The Bread Machine Cookbooks 1-4 plus the Worldwide Sourdough by Donna German. What I found is that there are SO MANY good recipes in #1 that I almost never use #2-4, unless I'm searching for something specific (like a DIFFERENT recipe to use up pumpkin, apple or onion). I've owned other bread cookbooks but have since given them all away. I have great success converting her regular breads to whole wheat (Ex: if it calls for 3 cups flour I'll put in 2.5 cup whole wheat flour plus .5 cup white flour). I like things seasoned strongly, too, so I tend to triple her spices or poppy seeds or citrus peel amounts. Onion / apple can only be doubled, though, and it does change the consistency a bit.

I usually rate the recipes in my cookbooks (so I remember whether or not to make them again) but I stopped bothering with this book, since they're almost always excellent. I use #1 often, and the others almost never because #1 meets my needs almost every time. (Sourdough requires maintaining "starter," which I'm just not up to.) In fact, I'm purchasing another book, new, just to have a shiny unmarked copy (and to let the person I lent my old one to keep it). My recommendation: Buy this one. Later, IF you make so much bread that you actually want more variety, THEN spend your money on different varieties.

We just ordered one of the 2 remaining copies of this in Amazon's inventory to replace the one we have been using for several years. It was getting dogeared and pages were falling out. We have all 6 of Donna German's bread machine cookbooks but this is by far the one we use the most!

I LOVE this book. I've had it for years. Good information on Bread Machine Usage and Ingredients. Every recipe I've tried has worked (unlike some other books and recipes I own.) I love the Christmas Anise Bread and the Peanut Butter and Jelly Bread. So unique! I don't use - or feel I need - any other bread machine book, though I'm thinking of buying another one of hers just for fun. I LOVE IT!

I love hot, freshly baked bread, but I seldom have the time for kneading, proofing, and all the rest, so several years ago I acquired a bread machine. Last Christmas, someone decided I needed to expand my baking repertoire and gave me this book. It starts with the real basics -- white bread, egg bread, whole wheat, rye -- and works up to more complex recipes like "Maple-Pecan Cornmeal Bread" and "Roasted Garlic and Stout Bread" (made with dark beer). Many of them use the machine for only part of the process and still require you to punch down, etc -- and, frankly, I got a machine so I wouldn't have to do that stuff! Nevertheless, there are some really good machine-only recipes, especially "Pepper-Parmesan Sourdough," "Poppy Seed-Cranberry Bread," which is great for brakfast, and "Garlic and Dried Tomato Bread," which is perfect with homemade minestrone. The instructions are easy and assorted helpful tips are scattered throughout.

If your bread machine has been gathering dust, buy this book and plug in your machine. Jan Miller and Better Homes and Gardens have produced an excellent cookbook. It is easy to follow and has recipies for different quantities. A trip to the Health Food store is needed for some of the loaves, but in general you can make and bake immediately!

A friend lent me this book three months ago and I kept making excuses for not returning it. In the end, she came for lunch, and feeling guilty I thought I would just write out my favourite recipes, and ones I wanted to try ... an hour later and I was still writing! She came for lunch (I served Corny Bread, my favourite so far) and during dessert I was STILL writing. She felt so bad, she told me to keep it longer. She also suggested I tried Amazon, and here I am and have ordered all the books in the series, plus copies for some of my friends. This is the best Bread Machine Cookbook. It is simple, with no uneccesary information. The joy of Bread Machines is that once you have done a couple of recipes from your Instruction book you can cook anything and don't need to be told the same information over and over again. I love every recipe I have tried so far from this book. Everyone with a bread machine should have one!

I checked this book out of my public library and cried when it needed to be returned! I absolutely loved it. I tried many of the recipes and found all to be wonderful. The 4 star rating is due to the directions not always being super clear. The book tends to deal on the level of one having had experience with a bread machine. Highy recommended!

This book has a great section on sourdough breads that I have used again and again. The author provides an accurate description of each bread with suggestions of menu accompaniments. I would consider this author an expert on bread machine breads! And so easy to follow.

I purchased this book. I don't recommend it. The recipes include ingredients that are difficult to find and expensive if you do find them. I gave my copy to a culinary arts student. She also finds it to be unrealistic for home cooks. I wasted my money on the book. I'm not willing to waste more on ingredients. Ms Brody needs to provide substitutes for the expensive ingredients she sells.

Every recipe seemed like you always needed to refrigerate your dough for a very long time before you could actually bake, then enjoy. A lot of the recipes called for specialty items that you just can't go to the local grocery and buy. Laura sells these items on her own out of a magazine. I am thinking of ordering some just so that I can try these recipes but the prices are a bit high.

Having recently relocated to San Antonio and finding a lack of bakeries, I purchased a Cuisinart convection breadmaker. Although the Cuisinart CBK-200 comes with a decent set of recipes, many are laden with fat (with 30% or more of calories coming from added oil, butter, nuts, etc.) and sugars. I try to eliminate oils, fats, sugar and salt from my diet, so I was looking for a healthier alternative to home breadmaking.

Enter The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook. Added fats have been replaced by lean, fruit- and veggie-based alternatives such as unsweetened apple butter, applesauce, minced prunes, and mashed sweet and white potatoes. Sugars such as molasses and honey are replaced by dried fruits (raisins, currants, cherries). Sun-dried tomatoes, zucchini, corn, carrots, kale, and onions are among the many veggies that make a guest appearance.

Although I was doubtful that these healthy, lean (less than 5% calories from fat) breads would be tasty, I have tried three loaves thus far and all were sensational. My first loaf was the Butternut Squash and Balsamic Vinegar loaf (page 51). I substituted canned pumpkin for the squash and dried cherries for the raisins, and the loaf was pleasantly sweet, with an orange color but not an overwhelmingly pumpkin-y taste.

My second loaf was a breakfast bread (Oat and Raisin Bread, page 35). Although I only made a one-pound loaf, the bread was so light and airy that it was nearly as big as a large loaf. Both the Butternut Squash and Oat and Raisin bread are delicious toasted in the morning.

My third loaf was made to accompany soups: lentil bread, with a hearty helping of cooked lentils and Mediterranean flavors courtesy of sage and sea salt. Denser than the first two breads I baked, the lentil bread is a savory, hearty accompaniment to soups and sandwiches.

Although one reviewer mentioned a disasterous loaf of zucchini bread, I am brand new to breadmaking (my first loaf ever was from this cookbook) and have had nothing but success. It's important to add ingredients in the order recommended by your breadmaker: usually liquids first (at room temperature, except for water, which should be between 80-90 degrees), then flours and seasonings, and finally the yeast. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow. Several breads require finishing in the oven (low-fat challah, whole wheat baguettes, pitas). Besides low-fat, no sugar added recipes, the book also includes a chapter on salt-free breads (but not gluten-free).

The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook Ever truly lives up to its name. Although over ten years old, the recipes work beautifully with my brand new, circa 2006 bread machine. Thankfully, the ingredients are fairly common, with some alternative grains and flours (amaranth, quinoa, barley, rye) called for to add variety. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves bread but is looking to lighten up on refined sugars, oils, and salt; these recipes offer all of the taste with none of the guilt.

I have tried two different recipes now. Even though the recipes are for 1lb and 1.5lb loaves (and I make 2lb loaves), I just double the 1lb ingredients, and everything has turned out fine.

I tried this book for the first time and used recipe for Summer Zucchini bread on page 90. It was a disaster. I felt there is an error in this one because it only called for 1/3 cup of water for large loaf of bread! I followed this one to the letter and the result was a hard clumpy mess. I'm an experienced bread maker user and this was a huge disappoint.

I have had tremendous success with this book and the other ones in the series. I don't know if the recipes are just well-suited to my National/Panasonic machine or what, but I have NEVER had a failed recipe in the batch. Granted, the author always suggests to add ingredients in the order that is recommended by your machine, so I suppose a good working knowledge of your bread machine is a must. I especially liked this book and the subsitutes that it has for sugar. I highly recommend this book.

Plan what you want to make before hand for you could get stuck for quite some time just trying to decide which of the tasty recipes to follow! This book, as those who have tried the Nitty Gritty books will know, is packed with recipes and variations on the classic, now somewhat boring, breakfast staple. On top of that, there are numerous pizzelle recipes (similar to a waffle cone for those that don't know), which I have not found in abundance anywhere else. There are also lots of recipes for toppings and syrups for the waffles and fillings for the pizzelles so you are not just left with plain old Mrs. Butterworth's! Great addition for anyone who loves breakfast foods and wants to expand from the package mixes!*** I have to add that we are now in love with the eggnog waffles! Sounds odd but they are totally good!

I ordered this book the same time I ordered the Chefmate bread machine, & am very glad I did. The recipes are super - very different & varied - and the baking & ingredient hints are VERY handy. Every recipe I used came out perfect, & we now have bread at almost every meal. The pumpernickle was great for lunch sandwiches, the Stollen unbeatable for breakfast toasted, & the cheese & onion, outstanding! Every bread machine user ought to have this book. I've had this book (as well as the four previous books in this series) for over three years, and I still use it almost daily. I highly recommend the Potato Bread and the Dill Onion Bread. Yummmmmmmmy! As with all her other books, German includes basic bread machine instruction, LOTS of great hints, trouble shooting and even instructions (and great recipes) for making rolls and pizza using the dough cycle. These are the only bread machine cookbooks I've ever needed, and I think they are absolutely great buys. Try it, you won't be sorry!

This is an AWESOME cookbook, I love the way the recipes are listed in the book, very easy to follow. The ingredients are listed in order to how they should be placed in the machine, there are instruction for 1, 1/2, and 2 lb loaves. The print is large which also makes the recipes easy to follow. I own her whole series of BM cookbooks because I like them so much!! Great variety also--if I have a certain ingredient that I want to use up in my cupboard, 9 times out of 10 I can find a recipe for bread that I can use it in!! Can't say enough good things about this cookbook!!

This is not my favorite of the Nitty Gritty series, but I love having a huge selection of ABM recipes. I would rate Rehberg's "Bread Machine Magic" books as superior, in general, but "The Bread Machine Cookbook III" gave me a delicious "Cranberry Orange Bread,", page 76, "Anadama Bread", page 42, "Jalapeno Corn Bread", page 45, "Orange Ginger Bread", page 84, "Chocolate Chocolate Chip Bread", page 101, and "Poulsbo Bread", page 131.

For those who want an ABM recipe for every possible inspiration, they'll need this volume!
