5 out of 5 stars Dialysis Diet.......2007-10-11

My father is on a new renal diet. He just started going to dialysis three times a week. This book helped us cope with the sudden demands of a renal diet and helped calm our fears. Cooking for a dialysis patient isn't nearly as complicated and daunting as we thought. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Recipes for Renal Diets.......2007-09-03

My mother was recently diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and told to reduce her protein, sodium and potassium intakes. The doctor's office provided no sources for preparing meals to meet this criteria, and a visit to a hospital dietitian was not very helpful for renal specific needs. We found this book through our own internet search, and have been very pleased with its contents. My mother recognized many dishes which she has prepared in the past (modified somewhat for the new diet requirements) and was able to relax a bit after the shock of her diagnosis. This book is one of her two favorites that we have acquired. I would highly recommend this book to people who need a renal diet.

5 out of 5 stars The Clevland Clinic Foundaton Creative Cooking for Renal Diets.......2007-03-19

The recipes are good besides being healthy for a CKD patient. They are used by the whole famiy without complaint, eliminating preparing two separate meals. After being raised on meat and potatoes and having to change eating habits, this cookbook comes as close to "normal food" as I have found.

4 out of 5 stars Good Eats............2007-02-14

I find the recipes in this book very good and quite simple in preparation. While there are many restrictions for the kidney patient,I find these recipes meet their needs, one doesn't have to give up taste as in so many other health plan diets and allows for a good variety.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook!!.......2002-07-14

I have had this book for several years, we have tried just about every recipe in it and they are all great! I get complements all the time on the wonderful food, no one believes that the recipes are from the Renal cookbook.
My grandchildren especially love the spaghetti sauce.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gluten free cooking.......2007-01-06

We love Bette Hagman's cookbooks. My mom bought her first one years ago, and it made a huge difference in the quality of her recipes. When I want a new cookbook for gluten free foods, I look for Bette's offerings first.

5 out of 5 stars the bible on GF cooking.......2006-07-12

This is the bible when it comes to baking gluten-free. Long ago, before the Internet was publicly available, people had to find information anyway they could on living GF and coeliac disease. When this book was first published in the early to mid-1990s, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Before this book, I had a few recipes from the Celiac Society of America (CSA) and the Gluten-Intolerance Group (GIG), and a couple of really bad cookbooks from the UK (which usually relied on GF flour (wheat flour with the gluten washed) that wasn't readily available in the US and didn't bake all that well. The recipes in all of Bette Hagman's books are great -- staples that you longed for. Lentil chocolate cake -- even the non-coeliacs will want some!

5 out of 5 stars The original and still the most comprehensive.......2006-07-10

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Revised* is a really great book with a lot of the staples that you need in there. The initial couple of chapters about what you can and can't eat are worth the price of the book (sure, you can't have wheat, rye, or barley, but how about quinoa, teff, spelt, or millet?) (Answers: yes, yes, no, yes.) but the recipes are what you should buy it for. The "Revised" edition has been updated with the new "four bean flour" blend.

My favorites:

Corn muffins - p86 - uses a polenta technique to be utterly different than cornbread
Pumpkin bread - p76 - fabulous.
Sandwich bread - p55 - the closest thing to, well, you know.
Muffins - p77 - done in less than an hour and tasty-tasty-tasty.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not exactly "gourmet"..........2006-05-23

I was disappointed in this book. I guess I expected more than meatloaf, cheese balls, tuna casserole and beef stroganoff...

There are a few gems, but overall, not what I would consider "gourmet". Ninety percent of these recipes I never would have eaten before being diagnosed and I'm certainly not going to eat them now...

4 out of 5 stars Eat Healthy........2006-02-24

I recently became intolerant to Gluten. My doctor ran out of intructions to patients for Gluten free diet. I went to Google, which reffered me to your link to Gluten free diet books.
I got more than I required and I am happy with the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-02-08

This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!

After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!

I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25

Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.

In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.

I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!

I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.

All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.

After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.

Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!

Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.

I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.

The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.

3 out of 5 stars For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20

"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.

The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.

It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.

Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.

Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!

3 out of 5 stars Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09

Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK...........2006-12-22

I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....

Without this book my father in law would probably not be with us. The hospital sent him home with a boiled chicken and vegetable diet. This book has given our family several different recipes for variety that are tasty. A diabetic diet is hard enough to follow, but when you throw in kidney failure on top of that, a diet can be almost impossible to follow. Without this book, I am sure he would of given up and ate whatever he wanted and took his chances. My family and I thank you Cleveland Clinic for putting this book out, it's the only one of this kind that I was able to find. Thank you so much.

5 out of 5 stars Love to Grill.......2007-07-07

I love to grill and this book has some great recipes for the way I eat.
Dana Carpender is an inspiration for many with all of her books.

3 out of 5 stars In-disguise Splenda cookbook.......2007-06-08

I agree with the other reviewers that Dana has a great writing style, but overall, I was disappointed with the book. I don't use/eat Splenda and this entire book seems to be based around the use of it...IN EVERYTHING. Even things that don't need sugar to begin with have, on average, a packet or two added to the recipe. Marketing? Who knows. Low-carb does not have to mean SPLENDA SPLENDA SPLENDA! I rate the book three stars because I did get some good suggestions from the drink and side-dish recipe sections.

5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-03-14

I love to grill, but have always felt bad about all the sugar most recipes ask for. This book uses Splenda as a substitute. So far what I've cook out of this book has been a hit with the family. Even grandma liked the stuff I was pulling off the grill.

4 out of 5 stars Dana Carpender is the best........2006-03-03

I currently have ALL Dana Carpender's books. I love her style of writing. She is so down to earth. In her books, she will tell you some brands that she has tried and what tastes good and what is horrible. I have loved everything that I've made from her cookbooks and am inspired everytime I pick up her books. If you are trying Low-Carb, her books should be in your kitchen. She is great and I will continue to purchase her cookbooks as they become available. I never feel like I am on a diet when I use her recipes. Infact, I'm not on a diet...I have just changed the way I eat and think about food.

5 out of 5 stars Dana's Low Carb BBQ Cookbook.......2005-09-30

Outstanding! This is the 3rd Dana Carpender cookbook I have and it is probably my favorite. Great recipes and great fun to use! I have been de-carbing recipes from my favorite BBQ cookbook and was relieved to see that I was on the right track.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource For Losing Weight.......2004-01-07

I've had this cookbook for over a year and it is without doubt the best one in my collection. The recipes are easy to follow and taste great. I've tried numerous ones over the year and every one I've tried has come out perfectly! In addition, there are pages of tips on how to prepare foods that any cook can find helpful. As part of a total weight loss program, this book is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Tips, Charts and Yummy Recipes!.......2002-07-03

This is a great reference for people wanting to cook a little healthier. There are a host of suggestions on how to convert existing recipes to a lower fat menu and there are many illustrations to support the many tips and charts. You will learn how to substitute lower fat ingredients for butter and oil without compromising the taste of your food. The authors discuss the many types of rice, flour, grains, herbs, spices etc. and guide you in selecting the appropriate one for your particular needs. In short, this book is a cooking class in healthy living. Buy this one...you will use it often!

P.S. Weight Watchers' clients will particularly like this book. The nutritional information necessary for calculating Winning Points is included with every recipe and you will have a huge number of dishes that you may prepare within your program.

5 out of 5 stars Low-fat Gourmet cooking?.......2001-12-29

This book is fantastic. Everything tastes like gourmet cooking.
Some of the recipes are fairly simple while others are not. This book is great for people who love to cook and want low-fat alternatives that taste great. Fair warning though this isn't one of those quickie meal recipe books. It is the best cookbook I own, regardless of the low-fat. It gives tons of information on exotic as well as common ingredients. It is a great gourment recipe book as well as instructional cooking book. Not only does this book tell you how to cook everything (poultry, seafood, vegetables, desserts, etc.) it also includes a nice sampling of international recipes for added flair, Spinach/cheese enchiladas, Greek Moussaka, Squash stuffed with Mediterranean grains, to name just a few. You won't get bored.

5 out of 5 stars A good cook book for women over 40.......2007-05-23

This is a very good cook book for any woman over the age of 40, but it is also good for anyone who is concerned about their health.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Crocket Cookbook for Women.......2007-05-21

I gave this cook to my new daughter-in-law for Mother's Day & also got one for myself and she really liked it & so do I. It is easy to read, great pictures, easy & healthy recipes & great information & nutrition advice for all ages. I throughly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the Bisquick?.......2007-05-20

I purchased some really great products at the new Betty Crocker website. I had requested a new Bisquick recipe book and was directed to this book, which I immediately purchased, without checking the contents, and I was so disappointed when I looked through this book. Boring! I usually avidly read cookbooks and new recipes, marking the easy, dramatic ones mostly, that make me look like a good cook - and I didn't find a recipe to raise an eybrow. Perhaps I missed the point entirely with this book, but I am way too old to waste my time on boring books. I'll stick to Rachel Ray and old Bisqick boxes.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best On Raw Foods.......2007-09-11

This book, along with the Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine book by Cousens, have become my bibles for raw food preparation. The best thing in the book is the smoothie. If you don't use any other recipe in the book, I would recommend you use this one. It has stopped me from craving unnatural foods, which is something I thought could never happen. This alone is worth the price of the book. In my opinion, the Rainbow Green book is better researched and more scientific, but still the Jubbs have done a great job in presenting a picture of why we need to eat raw and how to go about preparing the foods. I have doubts about the constant low temperatures they recommend for drying foods, and some of the recipes are very involved. Rainbow Green and the manufacturer for Excalibur both recommend at least starting with a higher temperature and then finishing with a lower one, and they say enzyme activity in the foods are not lost. I have tried both ways and am better satisfied with the higher temps first, both in texture of the foods and the reduced amount of time needed to prepare it. Still, I wouldn't be without this book. It's a treasure. The Judds are certainly to be commended for all their research and hard work in preparing this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Educational Book.......2007-01-12

LifeFood Recipe Book gave a very well rounded and educational breakdown of raw food and its merits, and also of what is wrong with mass-produced food in the US today. Included are many great recipes for meals and snacks that follow this diet.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive system of cleansing which includes many delicious recpies.......2005-12-23

This being one of the more niche books of the raw/living foods genre, it was not until I had been at least two years into it had I bothered to pick it up.

I was pleasently surprised when I leafed through this gem. The recipes in here are out of this world. There are many little tidbits of information which are thrown in just for your information.

So, the beginning of the book is a preperation for your kitchen, what to have in the way of equipment and condiments that are frequently used. When that is out of the way, they jump right into the principles of what Lifefood actually is and some more information on why to choose Lifefood.

The recipe portion is quite expansive and inventive. I applaude Annie for her intuitive recipes and the massive abundance of flavour they bring to every meal. By far my favorite recipes have to be the "Sweet Thai Tomato Soup", which by the way I recommend with extra cayenne pepper, and the Teriyaki Pate, which is just fantastic on some sheets of nori with extra greens and cucumber or rolled up in a collard leaf.

The desserts are out of this world. Recipes like the "Phat Black Sorbet", which consists of dark cherries and other delictables, are just incredible and really make this book stand out.

The Lifefood fasts they outline are good and provide a solid platform for anyone to begin their experiences of purging, cleansing and fasting with. They are nutritional fasts, meaning you dont go hungry but are still giving your digestive system a rest.

The Lifefood fasts typically consist of a two week protocol where you consume only liquids (blended soups, smoothies, juices, sorbets, liquid salads and Lifefood beverages like Electrolyte Lemonade) for a period of two weeks while you do a couple liver Flushes and a couple Gallbladder flushes.

My personal experience with the Gallbladder flushes in incredible. I am so glad that I have done them. My digestion has improved immensely and my metabolism has gone up. I have already done two and am going to start the third one soon.

The other major cleanse this book outlines is a parasite flush. This regimine is an easy one that almost everyone should consider and consult their alternative healthcare practitioner (like a Licensed Accupunctureist, a Naturopath or a Chiropractor) with. I highly suggest it and have noticed great improvement since starting it.

Overall I believe that Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb have done a wonderful job on this book. Their knowledge of recipe synergy, knowledge of colloidal physiology and overall understanding of esoteric herbalism makes me give this book a five star rating.

If you wish to get all you can out of this book, make sure you pick up David Jubb's other books "Secrets to an Alkaline Body" and "Jubb's Cell Rejuvenation - Colloidal Biology: A Symbiosis".

This may be one of the most important books you add to your library when it comes to overall understanding of your recipe choices and your health.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoker and very practical.......2004-11-24

Having had oral surgery and not being able to eat solids,I came to this book looking for liquid diet suggestions. While the Salad section (and others) are of no use I found the soups and beverages recipes have a variety and originality that was most impressive and certainly perks a jaded appetite. Although the book is of limited use to me personally, what I have been able to obtain from it still makes the purchase well worthwhile. I recommend cancer patients using alternative therapies to aid their recovery, have a close look at this book. The LifeFood principle is a valid extension to alternative medicine. However it must be emphasised this is a recipe book, based on the Lifefood theory-(the theory of which is dealt with extensively in first few chapters)- it only refers to health benefits in a general way.)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2004-05-06

I own an earlier edition of this book and I have not seen the new one. The recipes I have made are delicious and well balanced. The life-food kitchen part of the book tells about the tools and essential ingredients you will need (juicer, blender, miso, unpasteurized soy sauce, unrefined oils, etc.)The information presented is remarkably informative but not organized in an intuitive manner. Nevertheless this book got me drinking alkalized water and doing a number of other offbeat things which have generally benefitted my health. The book makes many claims about what makes certain foods and practices (such as long, austere cleanses) beneficial yet has no bibliography, so all the information must be assumed to have come from the observations of the authors. I recommend anyone looking at making a radical dietary transformation read Paul Pitchford's "Healing With Whole Foods" before doing so.

4 out of 5 stars I am so happy to find a new copy of this old friend.......2006-11-20

I have a 20-year-old softbound copy of this cookbook that is in tatters, so I am very happy finally to find a fresh copy. I have made many of the recipes in this book and my family has a couple of all-time favorites, especially the pork with green beans and the vegetarian lasagne. While the basic recipes are wonderful, I frequently find them to be bland. My cookbook is filled with margin notes about what herbs and spices I have tried over the years to enhance the recipes. Nonetheless, this is a treasured part of my cookbook library.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes and resources.......2006-10-09

The first part of the book is lots of info about nutrition and so on, very interesting and informative (like talking about how potatoes have gotten a bum rap, there really healthy, she mentions one guy who lived healthily for 300 days on nothing but potatoes (and a little margarin). The second part is a few hundred recipes, which are great - easy, delicious, pretty fast, a lot of them with ingredients we keep around the house. Some of our favorites - the chili recipes, the spaghetti pancakes, multigrain pancakes (good with soy flour and blueberries), etc. This (along with books from Moosewood, Tara Duggan, and the Quick Vegetarian Pleasures book) is one of primary cookbooks; we use it all the time. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great cookbook which has withstood the test of time........2006-05-03

I bought this cookbook back around 1992 and the tattered paperback is the most used cookbook in my kitchen.

I live with a vegetarian, so most of what I've cooked has been the meatless recipes, and without exception, they have all been wonderful! Some of these recipes are also my potluck dinner staples (esp the Tri-Color Chickpea Salad). The Quick Lasanga with Bean Sauce has been the hit of every party I've taken it to, and the Lentil soup is to die for.

At one point, I went through a heavy-duty baking phase, and tried many of the muffin and quick bread recipes in this book. Again, there wasn't a dud in the bunch - everything I baked was excellent and won praise from all who partook.

Most of the recipes in this book are very good "as is" (they don't need much futzing with). There is some prep work involved (lots of chopping of veggies and the like), so many of the recipes do take some time. Almost half of the book consists of information about food, nutrition, cooking hints and techniques, which I've found to be very useful. Personally, if you have to have one main cookbook, I'd say that this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars A great cookbook for everyday use.......2006-02-24

Putting "high carbohydrate" in the title is a no-no these days with the lo-carb craze that's going on, but I'm here to tell everyone that this is a great cookbook full of healthy recipes. Brody focuses on recipes that are often low-calorie and almost always include lots of veggies and other complex carbs, and she has many delicious desserts that aren't overloaded on fat and sugar. True weight management comes with exercise and watching overall calorie intake, while ensuring a majority of those calories are healthy ones. This cookbook is perfect for anyone who's interested in increasing his/her repertoire of delicious, healthy recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the Test of Time.......2006-01-24

I have owned this cookbook for about 15 years, and have since compiled an extensive cookbook collection of several hundred volumes. I still use this book, and have never met anyone who didn't love the turkey burgers; the garlicky green beans and braised red cabbage are also excellent. It contains many delicious recipes that are also healthy but are still satisfying and tasty. An excellent all-around cookbook that is meant for a home cook, not a professional chef. I am replacing my well-worn paperback version today.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook!.......2007-05-11

I got this book about a year and a half ago, and although it's not always the one I'm cooking from, a lot of my favorite and healthy recipies have come from it. Some of the ingredients can be a little tough to find, and there are a few recipes that need a little extra spicing up, but overall I've been extremely happy with everything I've made from it! The healthy eating and tips in the front of the book are also very helpful when trying to know what to feed your family to keep them eating right. It's like a mini class in nutrition :)
