Afternoon Tea!.......2007-05-12
what a great book! my idea of luxury is to attend afternoon tea in a great hotel-and now I can recreate some of the recipes (but not the harpist) at home. If you like tea, good food, and learning about creating a mood or an atmosphere for your guests, this little book is just great!
Nice book on English Tea.......2007-01-19
I enjoyed reading this book. It is a good starter book for those who would like to understand the ritual of English Tea and basic recipes of this time of day.
Good things do come in small packages.......2006-10-18
Lots of easy, great recipes. If for no other reason, you should buy this book just for the basic english muffin recipe and scone recipes.
The Best Resource for Tradition as well as Recipes!.......2006-08-09
A friend and I have recently begun taking tea and we love the true British and Victorian style of tea houses. I wanted to find a book for her that was a great resource on the history of afternoon and high tea as well as providing some recipes to go along with the information. This was the best book I found. No other goes into as much detail about the history of tea that this book does. The only downfall is that the only illustrations in the book are line drawings. There are no photos. Still, that didn't keep me from picking this book over several others that did have nice pictures, because in the end, the content of this book superceded any other.
Best of 4.......2005-01-05
I've recently bought 4 different tea books and this is the best one I have so far. There are a lot of the expected recipes for traditional tea time fare, with some minor omissions I felt. The print left something to be desired, some of it was blurred, but if you just want to buy 1 English tea book, this is it.

Great photos with recipes.......2007-04-04
I was drawn to the great photos in this cookbook which I will try out for a library tea party next month. The book is easy to read with plenty of great recipes.
An excellent resource for tea time recipes!.......2006-08-09
This was the best book I found in terms of being a resource for tea time recipes. Every recipe comes with a picture of the finished product, and provides easy to understand instructions. I was impressed by the number of recipes on various aspects of serving tea, from sandwiches to savories, scones, and sweets. I was looking for a book for a friend, but ended up keeping this one for myself!!
Full Of Good Recipes.......2006-03-14
I have many tea-time books, and this is the best. It has lots of recipes that actually sound good. I have tried several that ARE good.
Wow! Love those pictures.......2006-01-08
I was quite pleased to find that this book had exactly what I was looking for. As a new tea-o-phile, I have been looking for more recipes for British-style afternoon tea, and this book delivers. I have not yet made any recipes (I just got the book a couple of days ago), but the descriptions are clear and the pictures are mouth-watering. This book will be dog-eared in a very short time!
Gem of a book.......2005-12-27
I got married a few years ago at a quiet home ceremony, and my father and I, armed with this book, made more delectable sandwiches and savory snacks than my guests could eat.

Good book........2006-07-09
This book has good ideas about different kinds of tea parties. But not many of them fit my daughters likes. We enjoyed it though.

This is an absolutely wonderful book! It has everything a child or adult would want to know about Tea Parties including child-friendly recipes and crafts. I liked it so much I kept it for myself and ordered two more for my grandaughters. Ok, so I never grew up. It's still a great book.

Customer Reviews:
Great history - wonderful recipes!.......2004-01-08
Portrays an enchanting history of the "taking of tea" in the English tradition and is very informational on tea overall. The recipes are absolutely wonderful, even for preparing traditional English fare that isn't readily offered in most US tea shops. Very fun!
The definitive book on tea.......2001-03-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is the definitive book on tea, its history, and authentic tea-time recipes. Many of the recipes may not seem appealing to our American palates, but they are nonetheless authentically British. The author shares a wealthy of knowledge on the history of tea, tea customs and maners, as well as a robust section of recipes. If you're interested in having an "authentic" tea, you can't possibly go wrong in purchasing this book!
a fascinating, detailed book, but. . ........2000-07-06
The author is a British chef who was the culinary advisor to the PBS Masterpiece Theater series "Upstairs, Downstairs" and "The Duchess of Duke Street." The first 80 pages contain information about tea -- its history, how to make it, how to serve it, the names and uses of every type of implement, and so on. The subsequent 174 pages consist of recipes, and are followed by 15 pages of index. The entire book is sprinkled with amusing anecdotes, some from his childhood.
I found the book fascinating, but I don't know that I'll ever try any of the recipes. These are authentic British recipes (this man has cookbooks dating from the 1700's, and he quotes from them!). The recipes have all been updated for the modern American kitchen and are easy to follow, but I'm not sure how many will appeal to American tastes. I know I'll never convince my family and friends to eat sandwiches containing minced tongue! I couldn't wait to check out the recipes on potted meat because I'd read about it so many times in novels, but discovered it's boiled, shredded meat turned into a paste via melted butter! And there are 8 different potted meat recipes!
If you are interested in history, authenticity, and details, this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you just want to have a lovely party with foods that more Americans are familiar with, try "Tea with Friends" by Elizabeth Knight (for how to give a tea party), and "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley or "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel (for recipes).
Good, but not all I was looking for.......2000-05-06
Over all, I thought it was a good book. But if you are looking for ideas on how to throw your own tea parties, this probably isn't what you want (SEE "Tea with Friends," "Country Tea Parties," and "If Teacups Could Talk"). If you are looking for a history lesson on tea (first 81 pages) and a whole ton of recipes (next 178 pages) then this is your book. Or, if you are looking for a lot of tea recipes, it is well worth your money to buy this book (I would take it back if it didn't have all those recipes!) This book reads like a history book, and me having little interest in history, found this part of the book a little boring, but it is a wealth of knowledge on the subject and has tons of useful recipes.
Great book, one of my most used........1999-08-13
For anyone wanting to sample the luxury of tea in the afternoon this book is perfect. A wealth of information and receipes. Do try the crab sandwichs.
Book Description
When Harry and Kate learn they are going to a tea party with their grandparents, they are very excited. A brief etiquette session with Dorothea Johnson gives them the skills they need to enjoy an afternoon tea with friends of all ages. They learn how to shake hands, introduce themselves, pick up a napkin, eat a scone and drink tea from a proper cup. The children think of several "magic words" that they can use to show they are polite and have good manners - "please," "thank you," "may I," and "you're welcome."
A guest tea blender, John Harney, makes an appearance at the tea party where he shares a bit of tea history. They learn that tea originated in China and has been enjoyed for thousands of years.
Grandparents, parents, and children will find this book a valuable resource for learning about good manners, good tea, and good tea time recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Children's Tea & Etiquette is highly recommended as an instructional tool .......2007-07-10
Children's Tea & Etiquette: Brewing Good Manners in Young Minds is more than a simple picturebook - it is a thoughtful etiquette manual to instruct readers in how to properly enjoy afternoon tea. Many of the social graces discussed extend into the practice of the general world. From basic polite phrases such as "please", "thank you", "may I", and "you're welcome", to what RSVP means, to table manners for a tea party (such as not picking up one's napkin until the host has), to the importance of writing a thank-you note, Children's Tea & Etiquette is highly recommended as an instructional tool for preparing young people to do well in formal situations. Beautiful, soft pastel color illustrations by Dawn Peterson, a handful of recipes, and notes on the history of tea parties round out this good manners primer.
Children's Tea and Etiquette.......2007-02-07
I found the book to be absolutely delightful. My etiquette students will have fun putting together their first tea!

Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected.......2006-07-09
This is a great book. My daughter loves tea parties so I was very excited to get it. But she is 5 and it was a little over her head. She will enjoy it more in a few years.
Come to My Tea Party: Fun and Friendship for Young Ladies.......2003-03-13
I am absolutely delighted with this book - it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. My granddaughter is having a tea for her fifth birthday party, and I wanted to get her a book on tea parties to make it more fun for her. I'm not sure how I chose this book, but I am so happy with the choice. It is about a little girl named Colleen who goes to Miss Sandy's Tearoom for a very special birthday surprise. She is given a tea set, three stuffed animals and suggestions on how to have tea parties with her friends to make them feel very special. There are food and project suggestions, as well as reference to some Bible verses. The illustrations combine with the stories to make a very beautiful book. I've decided to keep this book at my house to read to my granddaughters when they are with me so I can enjoy it with them.

Another Rosemary Wells Winner!.......2003-10-01
"Another Rosemary Wells Winner!"
Rosemary Wells has written another winner with Ruby's Tea for Two. The story follows her usual pattern: older sister Ruby tries to dictate how an activity should take place, in this case a tea party. Best friend Louise (who owns the tea set) is invited. Little brother Max is not. "One chocolate and one strawberry, please," Ruby orders newly appointed waiter Max. As usual, one-track mind Max is determined to get his way. The devious expression in Max's eyes is reason enough to get this latest addition to this lively series. The Max and Ruby books are such a hit in our house that my 3.5-year-old daughter renamed her younger sister "Max"- and she answers to it! While we saw this particular story first on TV's Nick Jr., both my girls request the book version over and over. I also recommend the recently released Max Drives Away.
Book Description
Illus. in full color. Little girls will be inspired to have tea parties with this guide to the art of the tea party. Brimming with simple menus, kid-pleasing recipes, and lovely decoration and favor ideas, each party has a theme--from valentine and teddy-bear teas to rainy-day and garden teas.
Customer Reviews:
This is the sweetest, most adorable book!.......1999-07-28
I've had this book since I was very small (when it just came out) and I loved it! I was going through some old stuff in may basement about a week ago and found it, and BOOM! Rushing back came all these memories. this is a great book, especially if you are a slightly romantic six- year- old. It's a wonderful sort-of hands-on type thing, and my book still smells slightly of cloud cookies. :)
Excellent for tea parties enthusiasts of all ages........1998-05-07
This delightful book is one of my favorites. It encourages creativity for children and the adults in their lives. My teenage daughter and her friend enjoyed a "Teddy Bear Tea", making placemats, dragging out stuffed animals, and preparing special foods to share with each other. I've bought an extra copy to tuck away in case I ever have a grandchild to share it with!

Customer Reviews:
Tea at Glenbrooke.......2007-04-10
My husband and I were on vacation when I found this book in a little cottage style gift shop. I had not read Ms. Gunn's fiction stories, so had no expectations in that aspect when I bought it. It is a beautifully illustrated book with sweet, heartwarming short stories. I have enjoyed this book for at least 5 years and it still brings a smile whenever I spot it on my shelf. I place it right up there with the tea books written by Emilie Barnes.
Not what I expected.......2003-04-16
I have read and loved the books in Mrs. Gunn's "Glenbrooke" series, and I was hoping to find illustrations of the homes and gardens in fictional Glenbrooke, Oregon. I was seeking the recipes mentioned, but not provided, in the Glenbrooke books. I thought that the characters would be mentioned, or that their relationships might be elaborated upon...I was sadly disappointed. This is a lovely gift book, filled with brief, warm reflections on the author's own special moments revolving around the tea ritual. The illustrations are colorful and peaceful. The recipes look well-devised and tempting, though, I must admit, I have not tried any. This is a delightful book for people interested in "taking tea" with the author. But, I am sad to say, the relationship this book has to the Glenbrooke series is tangential at best.
All that I wish, but may not have.............2003-03-19
Do you long for the porch swing, but don't have the porch? Do you love beautiful gardens, but, like me, are an inept gardner?
Do you need just a miniscule time of refreshment? May I recommend Robin Jones Gunn's book, TEA AT GLENBROOKE? This is a lovely book to both have and to give. I gave myself this book as as Christmas present. Now, I plan on giving this book to my friends who need that brief moment of escape into the peaceful world found in this book. The musings, the artwork, and the recipes offer something for all. To those who buy it, may I just say: "Enjoy!"
A wonderful book.......2002-09-29
This attractive little book is so wonderfully eclectic! It represents the author's idea of what it's like when women come together over a cup of tea. Well, as a fan of tea and tearooms, I can tell you that tea brings this out in all of us!
Anyway, this book is a wonderful collection of poems, recipes, and touching musings and anecdotes. All of this is complemented by the charming watercolor illustrations by Susan Mink Colclough. This is a wonderful book, one that you should read outside, on a sunny day, with a cup of Earl Grey in your hand!
A wonderful retreat.......2001-12-04
I read "Tea at Glenbrooke" on an airplane and stepped off that plane filled and refreshed. Robin's poetic writing is the perfect gift for your friends or you.

The Martha Stewart of Tea Party Books.......2002-12-25
This is a great book. It's more around the eight year old level than four since it is the actual workings of how to have a tea party from making invitations to what to bake. Give this with a very nice tea set and you'll have one happy child!
Absolutely Charming.......1999-04-27
This book is absolutely charming. It features beautiful soft water colored illustrations. Just the sweetest book to share with a young child. Includes recipes for Raggedy Ann's Candy Heart Cookies and even a little something from Uncle Clem. What a delight!
