3 out of 5 stars The Low-Carb Comfort Food Cookbook.......2006-07-14

Recipes are good but loaded with fat and calories...don't use unless you are a strict Atkins's dieter.

5 out of 5 stars Great lowcarb cookbook- a must have.......2005-08-05

I love this cookbook. Full of some fantastic recipes and mounds of information on low carb products. Try the chili recipe with black soybeans, I couldn't tell the difference from any original recipe using kidney or pinto beans. YA gotta have this one.

2 out of 5 stars yes tiny cookies have fewer carbs...no kidding.......2005-06-20

There were alot of hard to find/expensive ingredients. The foods sounded yummy, but when I would go to make the items I would always come up missing one of the harder to find flours or powders. I am also a stay at home mom on a budget and some items are just way to expensive to purchase and cook with on a regular basis!
The carb count is still offly high in a few items and i found it easier to purchase already made low carb pasta rather than spend all afternoon going from health store to store looking for the different glutons and powders. Being a sweet junky I also made the low carb chocolate chip cookies. Sure a cookie the size of a quarter is low carb. That one doesn't take rocket sience to figure out. It is frustrating to put all of that work into making cookies and find you can only have 2 miniature cookies. Many of the recipes are yummy but in very SMALL portions. I am all for portion control it's helped me lose 30 lbs, but there is a moment where portion control crosses the line...a chocolate chip cookie the size of a quarter is not worth my time...limited carbs or limited calories!!!

1 out of 5 stars YUCK! Only Drs could author a cookbook this bland!.......2005-02-21

I had this book on my wish list and was excited to receive it for my birthday. But I am soo dissapointed!

It is a visually unappealing, cheap quality printed book with a poor layout. So bland vanilla, I don't even *want* to look for a recipe in it! Even if a cookbook isn't filled with graphic illustrations or full-color photos, it can still have an easy-to-read layout, but this book is nothing but run-on recipes and uneccesary opinions by the Drs. It appears as if they simply wrote in a word document file and printed it - no setup, no flow. Bleck. Cooking should be art, just because it's low-carb, doesn't mean it has to be uninviting or lifeless. As my husband (Marketing) says, only a Dr could make a cookbook so sterile!

Other than that, the recipes are good but it's so unpleasant to look at - I'm giving the book to Goodwill.

3 out of 5 stars good but not the best.......2004-12-03

Nice recipes and easy to follow, but lacks the humor of books by by Dana Carpender, She is an expert on low carb coooking, ned both!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and tasty..........2007-01-27

I have slightly above-average cooking skills, and must employ them at least 5 nights a week for my 6'4" husband and 9 year old daughter who both eat like they have hollow legs. This book is extremely easy to use, which is essential for my time-strapped evenings.

After a brief introduction about technique and tools, this book is organized by food type, i.e. meat, poultry, seafood, vegetable etc., with additional brief sections about garnishes and bread-sides. The recipes are not exotic, meaning you won't need a specialty grocery for every recipe. They are however intensely flavorful, utilizing plain, old-fashioned techniques like sautee and simmer to bring the flavors together.

The editorial review of this book complains about its lack of sophistication in the descriptions of each recipe, but I prefer the simplicity. The page layouts remain uncluttered and (more importantly) un-intimidating, which is important at 6:30 pm just walking in the door from work and faced with a hungry kid and a blank kitchen!

Included in this book are several standards like chili, beef stew, chicken soup, and vegetable ministrone in addition to some surprising and refreshing ideas such as cold avocado soup with cashews, white chili with chicken or turkey, and lamb shanks with gremolata. All retain their simplicity, flavor, and ease of preparation.

There is nothing more heartening than the bouquet of steam rising from a pot of fresh, homemade soup in these cold winter months... unless it's watching your family smile around their spoons!

4 out of 5 stars good recipes, no fluff.......2006-09-16

I really like this book, for , as stated by others, it is a hearty collection of soups and stews, with a great variety ranging from vegeterian to meat-filled to cold and even some fruit. I have some definte favorites, especially the smoked salmon chowder (just straight up chowder, nothing weird like peas or cocktail onions like another recipe I have seen!), but I do have to say that not all recipes have worked out for me. It could have been my taste, but I think a little more instruction, or perhaps tips/recommendations, from the author on the selection of certain ingredients would have helped the bad recipes turn out better. I would definitely recommend this book, especially with soup season starting up soon!

5 out of 5 stars Delectable Book.......2006-04-02

I got this one for Christmas and have tried perhaps 18-20 recipes since (I'm addicted to soups and stews).

Often, I have followed recipes in other books which were very disappointing, and sometimes very poorly seasoned. If I repeated the recipe, I often had to adjust seasonings, etc., to make it more palatable. However, every single one turned out perfect! Though I have a habit of improvising, I'm confident that I will not likely change these recipes.

4 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH BETTER THAN A GOOD BOWL OF SOUP.......2005-02-01

I'll admit..I'm mainly a soup person only in the fall and winter months when it's cooler and you don't mind a nice pot of soup simmering on the stove for several hours. Soup and winter just goes together even though this book contains many lighter receipes that can be enjoyed all year round.

This is a follow-up to the Big Book of Casseroles and contains receipes for over 250 soups, stews, and chowders. Some very elegant soups perfect for a formal dinner party to go along with stick to your ribs soups for tailgating before a big game. There's old classic favorites such as Chicken Noodle, Motzah Ball and Clam Chowder to go along with more exotic soups such as the Thai Ginger Chicken Soup and Spicy Cuban Pork Stew. One of my favorites is the Chicken with Buttermilk Thyme dumplings which is just fantastic in the dead of winter like it is now. There are several potato soup recipes which I absolutely love including the baked potato soup.

The recipes are fairly simple to make and most of the ingredients are availabe from the grocery store but a few will require a visit to a gourmet food store if you really want to do it right. This book is a soup-eaters dream!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook for the past year!.......2005-01-27

I love soup, but I don't like to spend all day making it. Maryana has "boiled down" every recipe to the simplest yet tastiest way to make it. Try the Sunriver Soup for company...it is delicious. I have had this book for over a year, and have made over 20 of the recipes...they have all been fantastic. Both of the Gumbo recipes are super, the seafood one is divine. The Gazpacho is perfect, and I love the Mexican Chicken and Corn soup too. I like how she doesn't require a million and one ingredients but just selects the perfect combination of spices for each soup.

You will find no canned soups in Maryana Vollstedt's The Big Book of Casseroles. You will find 250 ways to simplify your weekly meal planning. The properly deployed casserole is economical of both time and money. Anyone living on a family budget--with a family--but eating according to a take-out lifestyle is going to love this book.

Jambalaya is a casserole. So is Coq au Vin. So is classic Hungarian Goulash. But let us not forget Turkey Tetrazzine. Or maybe we should forget. Maybe it's the Turkey Tetrazzines of the world made with leftover dried-out Thanksgiving turkey coming at us after the days of turkey soups and turkey sandwiches and turkey salads that have given the word casserole the kind of odor we look for behind the refrigerator. While Vollstedt's version of Turkey Tetrazzine doesn't ask for a can of cream of mushroom soup, and while it is made from fresh ingredients, the result is still going to be the same.

And that's one of the problems with The Big Book of Casseroles. It's so big, the demands of coming in with 250 recipes are so great, that classics of the genre that would be better off left to foggy memory are rejuvenated for another generation of unfortunate diners. The other problem is how the definition of casserole gets stretched by the author. Any substance covered with another and baked in an oven appears to be a casserole. When is baked fish a casserole and when is it simply baked fish? Such are the questions raised by Vollstedt's choices.

The book covers a lot of ground. Chapters include those on "Basics" (as in white sauce), "Seafood Casseroles," "Poultry Casseroles," "Meat Casseroles," "Vegetable Casseroles," "Baked Pastas," "Grain and Legume Casseroles," "Gratins," and "Low-Fat Casseroles." There are no dessert casseroles.

Vollstedt shows you where the casserole has been, and where it is. Use The Big Book of Casseroles as a launching pad for your own creative endeavors. --Schuyler Ingle

    Book Description

The Big Book of Casseroles boasts over 250 recipes (including low-fat and vegetarian dishes), plus handy planning, freezing, and storage tips. For hot-from-the-oven dinners equally at home in the dining room or on the kitchen table, cooks need look no further than The Big Book of Casseroles, because serious comfort food never goes out of style.

2 out of 5 stars Nice and easy!.......2007-04-07

This is a great cookbook with easy recopies that everyone in my family will eat. It is rare to find a cookbook where every recipe you make is a winner but this book is the one.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2005-10-13

So many yummy casseroles. We LOVE this cookbook and use it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for the TURKEY (or chicken) TETRAZZINE recipe!.......2004-10-26

I have to admit that this book isn't exactly the type of "casserole" book I thought it would be either (as another reviewer stated regarding the non-use of canned soups etc) but I am still quite happy with it. The Turkey (or Chicken) Tetrazzine recipe is so creamy and delicious that I recommend buying it for that recipe alone! I have only tried one other recipe from the book so far and that was "Seafood Lasagna". It was sort of expensive to make and My Husband liked it and I did not. I thought it tasted too fishy BUT,I used canned crab meat instead of fresh and that could have been the reason for that. After scanning the rest of the recipes and ingred. lists, I do look forward to trying some of the other recipes in the book very soon.

    3 out of 5 stars Casseroles, huh?.......2003-09-14

I thought I would be getting a cookbook that included easy recipes. You know the kind, where you put all the ingredients in the casserole and turn on the heat! Not so here, for many of the recipes. Many require you to cook various ingredients before you put them in the casserole to be baked. Extra work for busy people. I must say, though, that many of the recipes are tasty.....just not timely.

Additionally, several just did not work out, eventhough I followed the directions to a "T". Did they test all these recipes first? They tended to be short on moisture and long on dryness. That being said, there is enough good stuff in this book to recommend it.....just use your head. If it sounds like it will be dry, add more moisture to begin with!

    Not a cookbook for beginners.

    3 out of 5 stars A non-casserole cookbook.......2003-06-24

I have been looking for good casserole cookbooks for some time, and was delighted to find so many 5 stars for this one. For me, it was far from a 5-star rating.

When I do a Tuna Noodle Casserole, I don't expect to start from scratch, cooking a white sauce, beforehand. Can of Mushroom Soup is a no-no in this book, as are other can quickies. This book is devoted to the concept of healthy from scratch--- which is okay. However, the author has completely lost the fact that for many cooks, not all canned goods are bad -- especially when they save time in getting family meals out on time.

My personal peeve: There are many Tex-Mex dishes in this book, which is fine. However, they are the Oregonian's version of what Tex-Mex is. Kidney beans abound, a Tex-Mex no-no. Black beans are also specified, which is okay. But pinto beans, the Tex-Mex favorite are completely missing.

In addition, although the author mentions several different grains in one paragraph, there is no variety in her recipies. Rice and pasta are all that you find, with an ocasional use of yellow corn meal.

Buy this book if you love one-pot dishes for serving. But beware--- you will be using several pots before you are through, preparing ingredients--- instead of the old-time use of cans or other ready-to go ingredients.

In Cooking for Comfort, New York Times food-columnist and cookbook writer, Marion Burros, brings her sure taste and rock-solid technique to revisit simple dishes like linguine with red clam sauce, fried chicken, and quiche Lorraine. Burros knows when a good thing isn't quite good enough, tweaking some recipes (her shortbread features blueberries and lemon curd); upgrading ingredients (a Cobb salad made with arugula); or simply doing a major overall (introducing wine to her cream of tomato soup). As someone concerned about health matters, she's also "streamlined" a number of recipes, like coleslaw and potato salad, which can be made with light mayonnaise without compromise. (She also knows when to leave well enough alone, as with her classic coconut cake recipe.) The 100-plus recipes--all approachable--range from breakfast and brunch dishes to desserts, and includes an extended selection on cookies, cobblers, cakes, puddings, and delicious refrigerator sweets like Apricot Mousse and Terrine of Summer Fruit. With chatty recipe introductions and short-take formulas for the likes of Toasted Cheese Sandwiches and Make Ahead Risotto, the book is a welcome addition to the everything-old-is-new-again canon. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

"We want to go back to a time when life was not so complicated -- or, at least, when we look at it from a distance, it was one that seemed much simpler. One ofthe few ways most of us can get there together is through our food."

    -- from the Introduction

In these turbulent times, bestselling author and acclaimed New York Times columnist Marian Burros felt the change in America's eating habits. More and more, Burros noticed that people were setting aside their salads and instead reaching for foods like meat loaf and mashed potatoes, while others longed for the cookies, cakes, and pies their moms used to bake. In Cooking for Comfort, Burros shares more than 100 recipes for comfort food. Some are classics, some are streamlined for modern tastes, some have a contemporary twist, and some are unabashedly indulgent. But all are stuff from which taste memories are made.

Known for her ability to create deeply flavorful food and foolproof recipes, Burros shares mouthwatering recipes for dishes like classic Maryland Crab Cakes, Cream of Tomato Soup, the ultimate Toasted Cheese Sandwich, the Perfect BLT, Picnic Fried Chicken, Meat Loaf and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, and Great Roast Chicken. They will soothe your mood and satisfy any craving. To calm that sweet tooth, Burros has included more than forty recipes for delectable sweets. Among them are rich and creamy Michael's Chocolate Pudding; no-fail Lemon Meringue Pie; luscious Coconut Cake; and Giant Peanut Butter Cookies with Chocolate Ganache, all of which will feed your soul as well as your stomach.

The recipes are as stress-free and enjoyable to prepare as they are to eat, and they will appeal to any level of home cook. Burros has also provided wine suggestions and special notes on ordering specific ingredients, as well as extensive cook's notes that offer helpful hints and variations on recipes. With Cooking for Comfort, Marian Burros has turned out yet another cookbook that is destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipes for Non-Foodies.......2005-04-21

`Cooking for Comfort' is by New York Times food columnist Marian Burros, who is part of a pretty distinguished heritage beginning with Craig Claiborne and Pierre Franey, continuing with Mimi Sheraton and Ruth Reichl and visiting columnist extraordinary R. W. Appel. With Ms. Burros, the likes of Mark Bittman and Amanda Hesser, all writers of notable columns and cookbooks hold the current standard high.

There may be a sense in which the limelight for culinary journalism has passed from the New York Times' printed word to the hotter TV Food Network with its stable of star hosts. In most direct competition to Ms. Burros would probably be `Gourmet's' Sara Moulton, Ina Garten, or the spectacularly prolific Rachael Ray. What is unfortunate is that a cursory look at this book's title gives the impression that it is addressing the same interests as Ms. Ray's '30 Minute Meal' rubric. The fact that Rachael actually wrote a book entitled `Comfort Food' strengthens this association. This is not, however, the case. Ms. Burros has created a very special type of cooking perfectly evident when one pays close attention to the title. Her point is not to give us a book of recipes for comfort food, but a book of recipes that are comforting to make.

It is not too hard to appreciate that a dish that appeals to none of your family will not be too comforting to make. Therefore, almost all of the classic `comfort foods' will also be comfortable to make. That is, a dishes popularity will contribute to the comfort one experiences in the act of making it. A second characteristic of foods which are comforting to make are those which require a fair amount of effort, producing a dish in which one can take great pride in having successfully made this food. It follows from this that these recipes are NOT about quick cooking. A third characteristic I gather from Ms. Burros' selection of recipes is that the dishes are either familiar to American amateur cooks (blueberry pancakes, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, spaghetti with marinara sauce) OR the dishes are interesting selections from world cuisines (Spanish tortilla, Onion soup, Greek Salad, polenta).

In fact, as I look through the list of recipes, I get a strong sense of similarity between this book and two recent `Most Famous Recipe' books, `the greatest dishes!, around the world in 80 recipes' by Anya von Bremzen and `The Cook's Canon, 101 Classic Recipes Everyone Should Know' by Raymond Sokolov. Oddly, I think that while these two books are great for foodies, Ms. Burros' book is specifically written for non-foodies. In this regard, she does share some common ground with the prolific Ms. Ray. Another way in which they differ, however, is that Ms. Burros' directions are much more meticulous, with lots of helpful hints on technique, serving, and wine accompaniments.

I think Ms. Burros' biggest problem, aside from the perceived or actual competition from both Food Network luminaries and New York Times colleagues is that her subject is so ordinary. Why in the world do I want to pay even $20 for a book of 100 recipes, 70% of which can be found among the 4500 recipes in the `Joy of Cooking' or the 2500 recipes in `James Beard's American Cookery'. Any American who cooks probably owns one or the other of these two volumes. In the end, it is probably her one big idea that makes the book interesting. The book is important because it can inspire one to get more enjoyment from your cooking and it gives recipes to help you do that.

Overall, I thing the selection of recipes is excellent, making this a great book for those who endorse that other great non-foodie doctrine of the importance of finding `a few good recipes' and learning them well and doing them well. One problem I believe most amateur food enthusiasts may experience is that they may not appreciate the pleasure in repeating a recipe and doing it well because you have done it before and have gotten all the kinks out of your technique. They are much more interested in tracking down and trying a new Thai recipe using lemon grass or galangal rather than making that same old James Beard London Broil recipe again, regardless of how good it tastes or how easy it is to make.

Ms. Burros' recipe for chili, for example, may not be quite as elaborate as a prize winning recipe reported by Robb Walsh, it is, I believe, a much tastier chili than the Pierre Franey recipe I did for many years before the foodie bug got me and I saw other approaches which used cubed rather than ground meat. Just one example of how well thought out is Ms. Burros' presentation of these recipes can be found in her suggestion to adjust the seasoning of the chili after it has been retrieved from the deep freeze. Another insider's tip is to check the heat in the Jalapenos to see if more or less are needed to suit your taste.

If I were to offer any ideas for Ms. Burros' next book, I would suggest she leave out the food processor and any other high end equipment from her recipe procedures. As I believe her primary audience is the occasional cook, I suspect people in this group may not have $300 food processors. And, if they do have them, they probably don't use them often enough to get the best use out of them. At the very least, I would offer an alternative to the food processor method.

I would also leave off or improve the list of sources in the back of the book. I have to love a list that cites Lou DiPalo and his Manhatten Little Italy store, but DiPalo's is best known for its fresh mozzarella and ricotta, for which Ms. Burros gives a different source. You can get good Parmigiano-Reggiano in any megamart.

Strongly recommended for non-foodie weekend cooks.

5 out of 5 stars #1 cookbook in my collection.......2003-09-26

Cooking for Comfort by Marian Burros is one of the most well thought out, incredibly written cookbooks I have ever read, cooked from or salivated over! Typically the word "Comfort Food" strikes up the notion of large amounts of fat, not in this cookbook. While you can find hints of luxurious fattening recipes scattered throughout her cookbook-- it is for all the right reasons. These recipes conjure up memories of grandma, mom, or maybe your Uncle Bill who would lovingly create homey comfort foods for you as a child. Her trip down memory lane about particular recipes reminded me of my favorites as well. As a native Tennessean I always thought that pimiento cheese spread was a distant cousin of cheese whiz not something you could make in your own kitchen! Burros also gives alternative ingredients for those who want a lower fat recipe, but all of her recipes are the real deal, recipes you have been probably making yourself but in a watered down version that never quite tasted as good as mom's.

Burros' anecdotes and recipe history notes prove that she is a born writer and editor with thorough research and appropriate accreditation with the added style of her own familial stories.
The help notes, step by step instructions and substitution sidebars can turn any kitchen neophyte into a chef! She even shares restaurant secrets (these are the secrets & hints restaurant chefs won't even write in their own cookbooks.)

Having a party and want easy, delicious recipes that have your guests humming or just a good old fashioned dinner that reminds you of Grandma? Cooking for Comfort is your answer.

    5 out of 5 stars Comforting Food in Two Ways=Eat & Cook.......2003-09-14

These are great traditional recipes that people always yearn for and like. Start at the front with Blueberry Panckakes all the way to the back with Stirred Rice Pudding, and you will find just exceptionally great comfort food without strain of shopping for weird stuff in the supermarket aisles or techniques beyond your patience, skills and equipment.

This has all that covered in addition to clear instructions, aids and source helps if needed.

The selection is sure to deliver many of your favorites and then some from a wide selection of ethnic groupings, course offerings, and tastes. There are some Tex-Mex, Italian, Hungarian, etc.

Personally, those for "Cocktail Sauce for Shrimp; Maryland Crab Cakes; Lobster Roll; Jim Brady's Prize-Winning Goat Gap Chili; Chicken Potpie with Phyllo Crust; Lemon Meringue Pie; Caramel Apple Tart and Pineapple Upside Down Cake" got my comfort attention and appetite to come um up.

This is down to earth cookbook to benefit all who want to cook up some pleasing recipes that will not strain wallet or cooking skills, yet provide bounteous, good food.

Nice to have had some photos, but recipes themselves conjure up great mental feasting.

Would make great gift for new bride or college bound.

5 out of 5 stars What Your Mother Cooked or You Wish She Did.......2003-06-11

Although we have yet to prepare any of the recipes, it was a joy just leafing through the book and seeing the recipes included. It is not a large book and is the first cookbook I read cover to cover as soon as it arrived. Memories of my mother's cooking flashed through my mind. It even includes a recipe for the first thing I remember cooking: Oatmeal cookies (although I did not include raisins). I heard the author on the Diane Rehm show and had to buy this book. It had at least a dozen recipes of dishes I had forgotten about, but tasted wonderful. I have learned that the best recipes are the simple ones. There is nothing fancy about these recipes.

The book has so many good recipies! Bette Hagman has great cookbooks for gluten sensitive people.

3 out of 5 stars Looks good, but nutrient counts are way off!!.......2007-07-13

The recipes in this book look really appealing and probably are delicious, BUT . . . the calorie/carb/fat, etc. counts that accompany each recipe are wildly inaccurate. For example, the Featherlight Chiffon Cake shows 170 calories per serving with 160 grams of carbohydrates. At four calories per gram, there couldn't be less than 640 calories per serving!! Her Cream Cheese Pound Cake shows only 5 grams each of carb and protein and 9 grams of fat. This must total about 120 cals per serving, but she lists it as 288 cals. per serving. In fact, almost every recipe I looked at carefully had unreliable numbers attached. Here's hoping the editors correct these errors before going to a second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Gluten, Get out of Dodge!.......2007-05-21

Bette Hagman's books are lifesavers and Godsends and I have them all. She makes the art of cooking gluten free and keeping a gluten free kitchen easy, logical and workable. You don't have to separate the wheat from the chaff - just regard the wheat AS chaff and you are on your way to a gluten free lifestyle!

Cooks who follow Bette's methods do work - you will need several different types of flours to make breads and bread desserts, such as cakes. Be sure to freeze your foods because they won't last long. It is also a good idea to cook in portions so as to prevent food from going bad.

Thanks to Bette, I have learned about hemp bread for celiac disease and for anybody following a gluten/casein free regimen and Teff Flour. There are many good websites out there that can direct you to places where you can buy the foods and equipment you need to start enjoying your gluten/casein free life. Bette Hagman is truly a Food Warden. She has given people that much needed Get Out of Jail Free card to break out of the prison of old eating habits and a Passport to Better and Healthier Living. Cheers to Bette Hagman!

4 out of 5 stars Good but not for those on Weight Watchers.......2002-08-15

The recipes in this book are great, and tasty (the ones I've tried). But if you're on Weight Watchers, it doesn't give the nutritional content of fiber, only calories, fat, protien, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. It also doesn't have ANY pictures, which is what a beginner-cook like me appreciates (it's nice to compare and see if what I made looks "right")
In all this is a good book; straightforward and easy to follow directions. I just wish it had pictures and fiber content!

4 out of 5 stars Good Comfort Food Recipes & Tips.......2002-03-03

I have already made the Blueberry Buckle Cake, Spicy Stir Fry Orange Chicken, Jamie's Hamburgers and the Pineapple upside-down cake and every recipe has turned out just perfectly. I like the nutritional breakdowns and the low-fat tips. It is a great book of comfort food recipes.

2 out of 5 stars If you have the patience and time . . . .......2007-08-07

As will all Martha tomes, this book delights the reader with glossy color photography of all sorts of yummy comfort food, with an emphasis on texture.

As a rule of thumb, any recipe that contains more than 7 ingerdients is prepared only once. More than a few of the recipes in this book have close to, and in excess of, 20 ingredients. Still, in its pages, are the simpler recipes and a few cooking/baking tips.

Check out this one from a library before committing to even buying a good used copy.

    2 out of 5 stars I have yet to like a recipe........2006-09-30

Although there are a lot of comfort food recipes in the book none of the ones I've tried have worked out well.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort foods = fonds memories of being a kid!.......2005-11-04

This cookbook reminds you of when food preparation was king & did not include pouring the ingredients from a box & adding water. Martha's recipes for macaroni & cheese, the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, shepherd's pie, caramel pots de creme or creamy rice pudding with caramelized bananas inspire fond memories.

This is a great cookbook to awaken young cooks & prepare them for living on their own. Growing up in the 70s my mother taught me how to cook from a cookbook at the early age of 8. The recipes in this book remind me of the ones I practiced for my family from the Betty Crocker cookbook I grew up with. My sister & I are both great cooks now & have a close bond with my mother from the time we spent with her in the kitchen, especially at the holidays.

There will be times when a quick meal is all you have time for, but find the time to create some of these homemade comfort foods & remember what enjoying a home cooked meal is about! That's the stuff that memories are made of!

First of all....i have never made a Martha Stewart Recipe that does not have a thousand ingredients! (other than the Everyday Food Magazine which I LOVE!), so....as some of the reviewers have stated yes there are many ingredients, BUT the end results are well worth the time and effort it takes to go get quality ingredients to make more than excellent food! The macoroni and cheese! (if made the way the direction call and ingredients stated can not be anything but delicious!) AND we use the pancake and waffle recipes constantly! My 4 year old who said yesterday i don't like waffles (because we've been having pancakes)ate them all day long!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything i have tried from this book has been VERY well eaten! I would recommend this over any of the other Martha Stewart Cookbooks i have! And yes it is small, but....packed with great comfort food as stated!

    4 out of 5 stars Perfect (almost)..........2003-11-11

My mother bought this book and I ended up receiving it due to my not-so-surreptitious glances and its frequent disappearances from the shelf.

This book is a repository of the most classic and tempting foods I can imagine. They are presented with the Martha Stewart Living twist. For example, although I was curious to try the macaroni and cheese (Sharp white cheddar plus Gruyere? Hmmm...) this dish has become frequently requested and often talked about. Now onto the potato dishes and beyond!

I phrase my only complaint as a warning: if a reader attempts to make certain recipes from scratch beginning to end, be prepared to spend some time :)!

    Thanks for reading.

    Book Description

Cookies 'n' Quilts features 8 original and complete quilt patterns plus brand-new recipes for 10 of the most temptingly decadent cookies and bars you have ever tasted.

The quilts involve the idea of superimposing one pattern over another. One quilt incorporates Maple Leaves into a Log Cabin block. Another strews flowers over an Irish Chain. Yet another builds a Virginia Reel from logs. And there are 3 star-within-a-star patterns.

The chocolate chip cookie recipe tries to answer the question of how many chips and how much butter can be packed into one cookie. The answer is apparently more than you ever thought possible! Among the cookies are an oatmeal spice cookie with cinnamon chips and a peanut butter cookie with chocolate and peanut butter chips. The bars are all different flavored brownie-like confections on a shortbread base.

Every quilt pattern includes color diagrams, rotary cutting instructions, and full-size templates. The recipes are thorough and easy to follow.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-01-02

I admit that when I first ordered this book, I didn't think that I would really be interested in the recipes. I was so wrong, the cookie recipes are really wonderful! I think that both chocolate and quilts are a comfort in my life.:)
The quilts are equally wonderful and quite simple to piece for an intermediate quilter. I love the Log Cabin that looks like a Snail's Trail or Virgina Reel. Can't wait to make this one! The more I look through this book, the more I like it. Imagine a Log Cabin block with a leaf in the corner. It makes a stunning quilt! Can't go wrong with Judy!

3 out of 5 stars Ths book is just okay.......2003-02-27

First of all, I do not care for any of the cookie recipes in this book. I haven't made them all, but the ones I have tried were simply too rich - and yes, there is such a thing, at least to some tastes! Also, many of the recipes call for "unusual" ingredients or equipment such as cinnamon chips or a muffin-top pan, and these things may not be readily available to those who live in small towns or outside the US.
The quilt section, however, was better. Most of the quilts are lap or wall sized, with a couple of bed sized quilts thrown in. Some are appropriate for an advanced beginner, while others require a certain amount of experience. They all have a more or less "scrappy" look to them. They are all nice quilts, though I don't think any of them are really outstanding. There is only one quilt, a log cabin variation, that I actually plan on making. One thing I really do like about this book, however, is that the fabric requirements are given in both yardage and fat quarters. I have the feeling that if you want to replicate the look of the quilts in the book, you would use fat quarters.
This is a perfectly respectable book, and certainly nice to have if you collect quilting books. But if you plan on choosing only a few excellent books, I would try to find something different.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2002-08-06

I am a beginning quilter, and this book has projects that I can do easily, plus others that will challenge my abilities, but also teach me new skills (such as set-in seams). I also appreciate how Judy Martin gives yardage in length and in fat quarters.
I am ordering a muffin top pan soon so that I can make many of the cookie recipes (lots of butter in these recipes, but yummy!)

    4 out of 5 stars I love Judy Martin's work.......2002-01-31

Since I love Judy Martin's work, I knew I had to have this one. And indeed the quilts are quite lovely, even though not many new patterns in there if you have her other books. The quilts are based on the idea of superimposing a pattern over another, eg maple leafs on logcabin blocks. Judy Martin has done this before and the results are always wonderful. I already have decided to make a small wall hanging with the friendship star quilt for my new office.

I only gave the cookie part a passing glance. The cookies looked and sounded delicious, but I doubt I will make any. This is due to the difficulties to translate the American measurements (1 cup etc) to something my German tools will measure. But then I just might play around with it till it works.
