Book Description
What does the atonement mean, practically speaking? How is Christ the answer to a strained relationship with a spouse, child, parent, or sibling? What if I am being mistreatedhow can the atonement help me cope with that? How can I discover the desire to repent when I don't feel the need to repent" And how can I invite others to do the same? These are the challenging, difficult questions of daily life, questions to which the gospel must provide answers if it is to have living, cleansing, redeeming power.
The Peacegiver is a book about the answers to these questions. Unlike other books about the atonement, The Peacegiver is written as an extended parable. It tells the story of a man struggling, with the help of a loved one, to come unto Christ. IN reading the rich details of his often difficult journey, we find ourselves embarked on a personal journey of our own. His questions are our questions; his problems, our problems; his discoveries, our discoveries. Along the way, the truths of the gospel are unfolded with surprising clarity and power, illuminating aspects of the atonement that few of us have ever heard or considered before. These surprising implications show us the way to deep and lasting peace in our hearts and homes.
"My peace I give unto you," the Savior declared. The Peacegiver explores in a deeply personal way what we must do to receive the peace he stands willing to give.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent analogy of the atonement.......2007-10-05
It started as a story I could relate to. But then it got a little odd, but I pushed through it and it came together and the concept was worth the approach.
I thought I understood the atonement, but not like this. There was an example provided that explained the atonement in a completely new way--it was one of those rare occasions where there was a dramatic paradign shift and my traditional understanding was blown away.
This new understanding takes away some of the pain for being wronged by someone dear to me and makes it easier to forgive that person.
This is a must read! Absolutely amazing. .......2007-07-29
This is a must read for every Christian who really wants to understand the atonement of Jesus Christ. I am not a big book reader, but when I read this I could not put it down. I have it on CD and have listened to it three times since I read the book. The doctrines are ones that most Christians (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are Christian)know but have never thought of in this context. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has not read it.
The Peacegiver: How Christ offers to Heal Hearts and Homes.......2007-05-10
Excellent book to give perspective to your relationships. Helps in the thinking process of "What would Christ do?" I highly recommend the book to everyone.
can't say enough about this book!!!.......2007-05-08
Excellent read. I was pleased with the way the author tied the gospel of Jesus Christ into simple, easy to understand principles. I have recommended this to several friends. Don't hesitate to buy it.
5 stars doesn't do this book justice.......2007-01-30
This is simply one of the very books I've ever read, of any genre. It's been out for quite some time but I recently pulled it from the shelf and re-read it. (I think I've read one or two books more than once in my life.)
Whether you're married or not, whether you're active in your religion or not, this book will force you to evaluate how you interact with those you love. This book was simply a mirror for me. Perhaps that's why I needed to read it twice! There were lessons for me on every page.
The book is a glorious lesson on (and testimony of) the Atonement of Christ. That's the best review I can think to give.

"Virtue is too often neglected, if not scorned or ridiculed as old-fashioned, confining, unenlightened," laments author Gordon Hinckley, a 90-year-old ordained leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Even as he enumerates all of America's social ills (including $482 billion a year spent on gambling, rampant child neglect and abuse, school massacres, a pervasive deterioration of values) Hinckley believes there is a remedy. Chapter by chapter Hinckley presents 10 old-fashioned virtues that will return America to the glory envisioned by its founding fathers. These virtues include Love, Honesty, Morality, Civility, Learning, Forgiveness, Thrift and Industry, Gratitude, Optimism, and Faith.
Hinckley makes a compelling case for every one of these virtues, quoting extensively from the Bible but mostly using convincing personal anecdotes (after all, he is an elder with 90 years worth of stories and wisdom). In his glowing foreword, Mike Wallace (of 60 Minutes fame) writes that Gordon Hinckley is an "optimistic leader of the Mormon Church who fully deserves the almost universal admiration that he gets." Clearly, Hinkley has struck a resounding chord with the American populace, including dyed-in-the-wool New York cynics such as Wallace. Word of this book is rapidly spreading across America as simple folk clamor to steer their lives and country with a more virtuous compass.
Book Description
In this national bestseller, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has created a classic look at the values that can change our world--and how to stand up for them. Drawing on anecdotes from his much-admired life of faith and service, as well as examples from American culture today, he examines ten virtues that have always illuminated the path to a better world: love, honesty, morality, civility, learning, forgiveness and mercy, thrift and industry, gratitude, optimism, and faith. He then shows how the two guardians of virtue--marriage and the family--can keep us on that path, even in difficult times.
Standing for Something is an inspiring blueprint for what we all can do--as individuals, as a nation, and as a world community--to rediscover the values and virtues that have historically made us strong and that will lead us to a brighter future.
Customer Reviews:
This book should be in every home library!.......2007-10-10
Hinckley has done a masterful job of reminding us all about the basic, eternal virtues that have always been the core of righteous living. This book is a "shot-in-the-arm". After reading it I felt encouraged to look for ways I can apply these virtues in my life everyday. I'd recommend this book to anyone!
Good is, well, good........2007-08-08
This a small book loaded with great principles. Simple and elegant! I was sorry to see a few mean-spirited reviews directed at it and its author. I agree with the reviewer that said that those bashing the book must not have read it. I suspect that many of these questionable reviewers consider berating inspirational books and their authors a kind of sport. I would kindly suggest that they consider quilting or some other useful hobby in the future.
Standing for Something.......2007-07-19
Gordon B Hinckley hits the nail on the head. We have too few people willing to stand up for their values. Great insights.
What exactly does Hinckley stand for?.......2006-12-17
Apparently Gordon Hinckley hasn't got a clue what he stands for, funny he wrote a book with that title. Hinckley lied about his own churches teachings on national tv. How's that for morals? How's that for standing for something?
A vastly important work that each person should read at least once.......2006-10-10
If you are reading this review, you should know that I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I believe Gordon B. Hinckley to be God's chosen prophet on the earth. I sustain him as a prophet, seer, and revelator, and I believe he is a mouthpiece through which our Heavenly Father gives us, his children, direction and instruction.
That being said, I do not believe that one needs to be a Mormon to find great treasures of knowledge in this extraordinary book. President Hinckley shares with us his insight regarding some of the vital virtures that our world sorely lacks. He speaks of love, honesty, morality, patriotism, the value of industry and hard work, of learning and education, and of many more values that will inspire you to live your life with a higher standard.
Take these next few sentences as my subjective opinion, but I believe this is one of the most important books that a person could read. It should be read often and throughout one's life, at least as a yearly event, if not more frequently.
If any of you who are not Mormon are hesitant about reading this book out of fear that President Hinckley will attempt to convert you, please lay your fears aside. This book is actually quite non-denominational. Throughout his 95-plus years on this earth, President Hinckley has learned much about our world throughout his extensive travels. He has met with countless world leaders and has seen firsthand many of the significant events that have occurred during the last century.
His vast experience allows him to share with us how our individual lives and the world in general might improve if we would adhere to certain ennobling and enriching standards and values.
I don't feel as though I could write any more to do this book any further justice, so I will include one of my favorite passages from the book, in hopes that it will inspire you to read it.
Here it is:
"It is not enough to be good. You must be good for something. You must contribute good to the world. The world must be a better place for your presence. And the good that is in you must be spread to others. In this world so filled with problems, so constantly threatened by dark and evil challenges, you can and must rise above mediocrity, above indifference. You can become involved and speak with a strong voice for that which is right."

Richard J. Foster's Study Guide for "Celebration of Discipline"
ASIN: 0060628464 |
Amazon.com
There are hundreds of books on prayer, and much of the advice they contain is likely to be the same. So what distinguishes these books? Call it a kind of wisdom, a sense that here's someone who knows something of God's heart. A good example can be found in this fine book by the Quaker writer and teacher Richard Foster. The author of the bestselling Celebration of Discipline explores various aspects of prayer, which he defines in one place as "the human response to the perpetual outpouring of love by which God lays siege to every soul." Beginning with the simplest forms of prayer--what he calls "ordinary people bringing ... ordinary concerns to a loving and compassionate Father"--he then explores the deeper places where prayer becomes not simply petition but a way of life. He writes of prayer of adoration and rest, sacramental prayer, meditation, and contemplation, and in the final section of the book moves outward into ministry, where prayer meets the needs of the world. In each chapter Foster defines, describes, and gives helpful examples. Above all he writes with grace--in both the artistic and spiritual senses. --Doug Thorpe
Book Description
Best-selling author Richard J. Foster offers a warm, compelling, and sensitive primer on prayer, helping us to understand, experience, and practice it in its many forms-from the simple prayer of beginning again to unceasing prayer. He clarifies the prayer process, answers common misconceptions, and shows the way into prayers of contemplation, healing, blessing, forgiveness, and rest.
Coming to prayer is like coming home, Foster says. "Nothing feels more right, more like what we are created to be and to do. Yet at the same time we are confronted with great mysteries. Who hasn't struggled with the puzzle of unanswered prayer? Who hasn't wondered how a finite person can commune with the infinite Creator of the universe? Who hasn't questioned whether prayer isn't merely psychological manipulation after all? We do our best, of course, to answer these knotty questions but when all is said and done, there is a sense in which these mysteries remain unanswered and unanswerable . . . At such times we must learn to become comfortable with the mystery."
Foster shows how prayer can move us inward into personal transformation, upward toward intimacy with God, and outward to minister to others. He leads us beyond questions to a deeper understanding and practice of prayer, bringing us closer to God, to ourselves, and to our community.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-08-12
One of the best books on prayer I've ever read. He's very rooted in Scripture and yet very thorough in His observations on how we, as humans, interact with God. It continues to challenge me as I read through each new chapter. Highly recommended!
Piercing my Heart..........2007-03-11
God used this wonderful book to pierce my heart with His truth. He has opened my eyes to what prayer really is and deepend my desire to be in converation with Him. This book has taught me new ways to approach The Throne and a new understanding about what it means to intercede for those I love.
How to methods of prayer.......2007-01-11
I am in a study/prayer group which is using this book as a guide. I find it helpful to discover new depth in prayer.
The reality of a functional prayer life........2007-01-04
Richard Foster has given me a sense of literacy in the realm of something I've fumbled through most of my Christian life-Prayer.
His manner of dealing with the specifics of prayer, the different kinds of prayer and the purpose of prayer in each chapter have given me something to grasp in the illusory world of communing with God. The idea of communication with an invisible God which Paul charecterises as dim and dark is less foreboding in the light of Richard Foster's interpretation of scripture.
His depiction of personal experiences, which aren't given to fluff or hyperbole, have solidified my resolve to pursue a life of prayer.
Excellent overview of prayer.......2006-11-28
Richard Foster explains different types of prayer each having its own chapter. The less controversial aspects of prayer tend to be in the front of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a richer prayer life, is willing to learn and doesn't have to agree with everything an author says in order to appreciate the book.

Enchanting.......2007-10-11
I admit, autumn is my favorite time of year. The cooler weather, just perfect for sweaters. . . the leaves of crimson, copper and gold. . . the sweet-tart taste of an apple pie fresh from the oven. . . . Susan Branch does a beautiful job of capturing the essence of autumn through her stories, recipes, decorating ideas, and charming illustrations. This is a book to be savored, and it makes a lovely gift as well. Here's hoping that Susan creates books on spring and winter as well!
Memory making .......2007-07-15
I thoroughly enjoyed this edition of Susan Branch's popular Heart of the Home series. I am planning to give this to my daughter-in-law to be to help her start her own family memories. Not only are the recipes good, but I enjoy as much the memories Susan shares with her readers. The recipes are clear to follow and the serving suggestions go a long way in making a lovely presentation. Thanks, Susan!
Excellent recipe book.......2007-04-03
I think that Susan Branch epitomizes New England and most especially Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Her books are just wonderful and I personally own a collection of them. I display them as part of my decor due to the wonderful way in which she puts them together. Her notes and anecdotes are absolutely devine and I hope she keeps on publishing her work.
Love It!.......2007-01-18
This purchase was actually a gift, the 5th time I've given this book as a gift, I've owned my own copy since it was initially released. I am a huge Susan Branch fan and this is one of my favorites. It is a lovely edition with excellent recipes, ideas and feel good stories. Will purchase again in the future, can't wait for her next release.
Warm fuzzys for fall!.......2007-01-04
This book is a celebration of my favorite season - fall! There are so many fun ideas - good recipes, cute stories, gift ideas, decorations and other ways to put your own personal touch on the season. The sections are short and easy to fit into a busy schedule. Or, if you've got time, brew some tea and sit for a minute to savor the thoughts. Either way, you'll get warm fuzzy's for fall!

Book Description
Installing a furnace may sound like a job that must be done by an expert. You may be surprised to know that by following my simple instructions, you can install your own furnace in no time. This book is for changing out an existing furnace, not for a complete new house duct installation. Installing your own furnace has significant financial advantages. You may be surprised that installing your own furnace can save you a tremendous amount of money. Completing this task on your own can save you as much as $2000.00. This amount is an estimate since each furnace is different and some cost more than others do. You can save even more, possibly another $1000.00, if you install your own central air conditioning. Installation manuals that come with the furnace are written for someone that does heating for a living, usually very complicated without prior knowledge of the subject. This handy book was designed for the first time furnace installer, with the intention of guiding you through each step of the installation process. Along the way of installing your new furnace Paul will be there for you with step by step "how to" instructions.

This Book Help Saved Me $8100........2007-02-28
Although I don't work in the trades, I'm the kind of guy that spent his youth tearing apart engines and working on cars. Suffice it to say I know my way around mechanical things. I live in Atlanta where all two story homes have a separate HVAC system for each floor. You can imagine my wallet shock to find both my 22 year old HVAC units needed replacement with a median quote of $11,500. My research on the internet provided information that I could buy the exact name brand equipment online for $3400. That said, I had no idea how to install it or should I say I had no experience in installing HVAC. That's when I learned about The Furnace Book. Paul King walks you through the complete process of retrofitting your replacement units to your existing duct and vent system. The pictures are excellent and the sheet metal advice is invaluable. It's written in a step by step manner that laymen can understand. This book is an excellent resource where you are shown the secrets of the trade. I know of no other book like it and would commend it to anyone wanting to understand the process of installing new HVAC equipment. As you can see my savings on the project were $8100. I would have to say The Furnace Book would be cheap at twice the price.
The help that I needed to install a Furnace!.......2005-07-18
My neighbor told me that there was a book out last year on how to install your own furnace. That ws great news to me. I bought The Furnace Book By Authorhouse online and I am glad that I did.
It was just what the Doctor ordered for myself and my family as my old furnace had stopped running.
I put in my furnace and air in a couple of days and saved a few thousand dollars for the book price. The book was no more tha the price of a hand tool and was a good referance book.
Good informative book.......2005-07-18
I was hesitant about changing my own furnace until I purchased The Furnace Book. It was of great help and the pictures in the book help me to understand what I needed to do.
I would reccomend The Furnace Book to any homeowner.
Homeowner.......2005-07-11
The book had a lot of good useful information and great tips for installing my furnace. I wouldn't have tried this task without the book.

Children's Devotional.......2007-10-02
This is such a wonderful book. My four year old daughter can actually quote most of the verses we have read. The concepts about the Holy Spirit and grace in the stories are a little over her head but I am looking forward to reading it over and over as she gets older and seeing her master the concepts. My two year old son even sits in on the readings and is learning his letters.
My kids love this book!.......2007-09-20
We read from this book at the breakfast table each morning. My kids love it and are memorizing scripture at the same time. It is a great book and I highly recommend it!
Great book for kids!.......2007-09-07
I love this book. So happy I bought it. It has great lessons that every child should learn.
ABC Bible Verses.......2007-03-09
I recently purchased this book to read to my 4 year old daughter as I wanted to begin doing some sort of bible verse memorization with her. I am quite impressed with the ABC Bible Verses book. The ABC format is interesting to my daughter -- she likes doing the next letter each day. And I have been amazed by many of the verses my daughter remembers and even sometimes applies to her own situation. What suprised & pleased me too, was that, despite being in A-B-C order, the verses are not just a random selection but build logically on each other.
Fun, Interesting, Motivating Stories.......2007-01-05
My children have all loved this book. The stories are so interesting the children beg to hear them, and every story strongly reinforces a biblical worldview. My children have memorized all the verses in this book, and the verses have also proved very applicable to Mom! I probably have bought more than a dozen of these for gifts. I am a picky buyer because my house is so overflowing with books, but this volume is a MUST BUY.

Book Description
Mary Emmerling's approach to American country style has always revealed the heart of a romantic: cozy, inviting interiors brightened with bouquets of vintage florals; all-white bedrooms and pampering baths; the sensual glow of candlelight and the fragrance of Casablanca lilies. Mary's is not a clichéd, conventional take on romance, but a clean, updated take that's inviting to men as well as women, modernists as well as sentimentalists. In
Mary Emmerling's Romantic Country, she shares her secrets for creating romance where you find it and bringing touches of charm to any setting.
From an enchanting cottage in Los Angeles to a young family's bungalow in Tucson, a high-rise in Houston to a tiny shack on Long Island, Romantic Country is filled with more than 250 lush photographs that offer an abundance of ideas for making any home more nurturing, pampering, and inviting. The "Romance A to Z" section highlights elements that instantly create intimacy, such as window seats, canopy beds, fireplaces, clawfoot tubs, dressing tables, chaise lounges, ceiling fans, big snuggly sofas, and more. And irresistible lists throughout the book reveal "No-Fail Ingredients for Romance," "A Sound Track for Seduction," and "The Most Romantic Getaways Stateside," as well as the sexiest cars, cocktails, movies, and much more. Mary even shares her own wonderful love story, which inspired this book, as well as a directory of her favorite stores and resources for romantic furnishings and accessories across the country.
"In these hard-edged, fast-paced, technology-ruled times, romance is more important than ever," points out Mary Emmerling. Let
Romantic Country show you the way to create a happier, prettier, more relaxing refuge—because, after all, whose life couldn't use a little more romance?

Mary Emmerling's Romantic Country .......2007-03-30
Typical for Mary Emmerling's books.....short & sweet. A Little disappointing but always nice to open it now & again.
another good book from this author.......2005-10-17
I have many of Mary Emmerling's books. I like the older ones a little better as she used more New England style decorating. Now she has shifted to Southwest which is not very appealing to me. She does present her style well no matter what type of decorating she uses.
Mary Emmerling's Romantic Country: Style That's Straight from the Heart.......2005-07-05
One of her best. The subject resonates with all of us, we want cozy and intimate and practical and affordable ways to achieve such. Her suggestions go straight to the heart. We can all identify with her view of her life now and how important it is to do the small things NOW!
A very personal book ..........2005-02-10
Mary Emmerling does tell us A LOT about her own life - I felt I was kind of intruding, but she is obviously SOOOOOOO happy with her new husband - and who can begrudge her that? But the photos and the explanations of how things were acquired or made or modified to fit into the very lovely personalized homes - are really priceless! And she goes IN DEPTH into each home - 4 or more pages of writing and gorgeous photos of insides and outsides on each home plus a description of the people who own it. The groupings are very well planned, too - sections on simple cottages progressing to romantic, traditional and some rather elegant places -
The reader who complained that the book is "too heavy" into Southwestern Style may be right - a lot of N.M. and AZ homes - I might have enjoyed more English Country or Seaside cottages, but there are many, many ideas and images here that can be adapted to any small house - I was feverish with enthusiasm after reading through the book the first time, and have gone back for inspiration many, many times since.
Inspires ones own style.......2004-10-06
I have long been a fan of Mary Emmerling since viewing her style and decorating tv shows. I have never before purchased one of her books and I am very happy I did. It is a great book to curl up with in a chair with and make for a cozy afternoon read with a candle lit in the backround. The photographs are crisp, clear and stunning. There are many different types of country style offered in this book and I believe there is something to appeal to those with widely differing styles of country decorating tastes. What I found particularly great about the book was that it strays from the traditional view of romantic country with it's laces and at times overly frilly and feminine fabrics and accessories towards a widely diverse notion of what is romantic in decorating. It teaches each person to find what is romantic to them from their own life and heritage and to call upon that in finding your own style. Offered are many photos and decorating styles/themes to inspire. Also fun about the book are the many lists of things considered romantic. Better still...make your own list after reading the book! A great overall read to inspire and relax with. Thanks Mary!

Book Description
Created for all homeschoolers that want to make the Bible the center of their school day. The Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach is a combination of several popular homeschool methods: Hebrew education methods, Charlotte Mason, delight directed, thematic unit studies, lifestyle of learning, learning styles, writing to learn and notebooking. Sampson provides you with the methods, program, and resources for a course of study where students spend half the school day studying God's Word and the other half studying God's world (academics). Students study history chronologically and science in the order of the days of creation. This book will instruct you, step by step, how to give your child a Bible focused, comprehensive education from preschool through high school; one that will train him or her to read, to study, to understand, to love to learn and most importantly to desire and seek true wisdom. This approach can be used for all grade levels. Author Robin Sampson, homeschool mother of eleven is a popular author of a dozen homeschool and Bible study books.
Customer Reviews:
This book will rock your world - YOU NEED THIS BOOK!.......2007-07-28
Robin Sampson hits really strong on Bible first-and-all-day-in-every-subject.
Sampson also is a big promoter of the 4mat method which in a nutshell is: get them excited about the subject, study it, and show what you learned. You show what you learned best by lapbooking (scrapfolder) or notebooking or some other project- maybe a diorama or something.
Well, I am a strong believer in lots of Bible, but I did not teach it all school day. So, in that area, I was really challenged. I have committed to do this now.
If you have not read her book... I cannot recommend it highly enough. No other homeschool book has been more valuable. Worth every penny.
A great book in Biblical homeschooling.......2007-04-10
Very informative and helpful. It gives you lots of options and ideas in homeschooling the Biblical way.
Neat historical information included. A few thing I wasn't impressed with but very minor. Still a good book.
NO Doubt...A MUST READ!!!!!.......2006-05-15
I read this book a year ago and it was great! But it was a new approach for me and it was very helpful. I've been actually using the different approaches she mentions in her book and have adapted them to our family's needs. I decided to reread the book, and boy am I glad I did! I understood more about where she was coming. If you are new to the Charlot Mason, this is a great beginning! Plus, you will LOVE Robin's 4Mat System!!! I have no doubt, this Homeschooling book is a MUST READ! and a MUST READ AGAIN:)
A must have for ALL Christian homeschoolers!.......2006-02-06
I downloaded this ebook over the holidays and am in the process of implementing Robin's ideas. The review is lengthy, but I feel it is such a foundational and worthwhile book. The book is divided into five sections, so I'll explain my take on each section.
The first section details their departure from public school and the different roads they traveled in homeschooling. Based on her success and failures she describes what led to the Heart of Wisdom teaching approach. One big issue for moms that she addresses is fear. Many wonder are they doing enough? Teaching the right thing? Are their children where they need to be? She does a wonderful job throughout the book of taking us to Scripture to find the answer. (Like Philippians 4:6-7 here.) "God knows what your children will face in the future, and He will give you what you need to educate them in the way they need to be educated." These were powerful words that forced me to realize that I need to abide in God's word so that he can guide me and I can guide my children. In this, you will find peace not fear. My job is to run the race and keep my eyes on Jesus! (Hebrews 12:1-2)
In Section Two she guides you in researching the biblical methods of education. You will also learn about the history of our modern and traditional forms of education. She ends with an appeal to return to a biblical Hebraic model. This section was an eye-opener for me. I learned the Bible's definition of true education and true wisdom. This section is a must for Christians. I now feel totally comfortable that education in my home doesn't look like education at the public school down the street.
A description of the different methods used in her approach is outlined in Section Three. First is always the Bible, then you will recognize a little Charlotte Mason, unit study, delight-directed, and classical methods. However, you will always see the Bible first and most importantly interwoven into everything. She also discusses different learning styles and how to teach to them all using four steps. Doing something with what is learned is one of the four steps. This step usually involves some form of writing. A step that I struggle with, a struggle that's not uncommon for most homeschool moms.
The fourth section gives you the how-to with instructions on just how to work out her plan. She tells you how to go about setting up your unit studies based on a four year study of history. I love how she splits your teaching day into two main areas: God's Word and God's World. She spends most of the morning on God's Word, reading the Bible and using Bible study tools. The afternoon is spent studying God's World using unit studies and living books. God's World studies include science, HIStory, and the arts all filtered through God's Word. She incorporates writing and language skills in everything they do. You will also find more information about making notebooks and timelines in this section. And probably the most important chapter in this section is "Scheduling by Faith." We are all given 24 hours each day, how does God want you to spend yours? This is another chapter that I will need to reread over and over...any time that I'm feeling defeated in my homeschooling journey.
Section three and four have a lot of information. I have read and reread, just trying to soak it all in. I was a product of the public schools and was never taught like this. It is a big paradigm shift for many of us and it will take time to make a complete change. But I believe she does a great job explaining her research and reasoning and then the methods and the how of fleshing out this approach.
And finally, in Section Five, she lists the resources that you can use to teach your children using the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach. Hundreds of books and resources are listed by her four-year plan for ages K to 12. In addition to this chapter she lists resources for deeper study at the end of almost all of her 24 chapters. The resource lists alone make the book worth the cost.
I will recommend this book to every parent that I can...hence the reason I'm posting it here on my blog! I am even considering buying another copy so that I'll have one to lend out! I do think this book will give you a fresh vision for what God has called us to do. I have always liked the book "Educating the Wholehearted Child," by Sally Clarkson. I felt like it gave me a vision but left me hanging in exactly how to do it. Robin has said many of the things Sally Clarkson has said in her book, but she explains better how to implement it in my home. I can't decide to try her book on Wisdom or her unit study on Adam to the Messiah next, knowing me I'll get them both!
Refreshing Insight.......2005-12-07
I found this book to be refreshing, challenging, and full of insight. It encouraged me to teach our children the way that God intended for them to be taught. Robin kept taking us back to the Bible the only source of TRUTH and WISDOM. I have told many people about this book. It is one of my three favorite books from the past year (the number 2 book is by Robin also, What your child needs to know when).

John O'Brien's scrupulous, exactingly honest memoir opens in 1995 on the day of his father's funeral in Philadelphia, which he will not attend because "eighteen years of silence stand between us [and] my presence would only add to family stress." Instead, he chooses to visit his father's birthplace in Piedmont, West Virginia, and consider the roots of their estrangement in the region that indelibly shaped them both. In a subtle, ruminative text, the author interweaves his memories with a history of Appalachia that debunks many myths. (The Hatfield-McCoy "feud," for example, had more to do with dislocation caused by the coal and timber industries than any native blood lust.) Much of the book limns O'Brien's first few years in Franklin, a small town two hours south of Piedmont where he and his family settled in 1984. A bitter conflict involving the Woodlands Institute, an educational establishment that locals feared was trying to "take over" their school system, becomes a paradigm for O'Brien of the way affluent outsiders have always stereotyped Appalachia as a primitive backwater peopled by hillbillies, while the residents resisted attempts by strangers to "improve" their home ground with a stubborn fatalism about the possibility of (or need for) change. The author's own conflicts with his parents--who were skeptical when he went to college and horrified when he admitted to seeing a psychiatrist--reveal a provincialism and narrow-mindedness he does not deny are common in the region. At the same time, he affirms the joy of living close to nature and honors the "plainspoken, empathetic, and genuine" native character. Because his complex work doesn't trade in stock nostrums or easy sentimentality, the portrait that emerges of a people and a place rings deeply true. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
John O’Brien’s deeply evocative book re- veals a place and a way of life—and the lives of an estranged father and son whose differences rest, ironically, in their own powerful bonds to Appalachia.
John O’Brien was born in Philadelphia, his father having left his beloved home in the West Virginia mountains after an impoverished childhood made all the more painful by family tragedy. Struggling to escape a father defeated by disappointment, displacement, and poverty, John too left home. When John decided to settle near his father’s birthplace in West Virginia, he hoped to comprehend the elder O’Brien’s attachment to the land, as well as the disabling fatalism he had carried north.
What he discovered is hardly the mythic Appalachia most Americans imagine, but a world of extravagant beauty—lush with green mountains, deep forests, ice-cold trout streams, and small hill farms. The people we meet who inhabit this land are for the most part unpretentious, working class, straightforward, open, commonsensical, and easygoing. They tend to look back more than most Americans do, defining themselves by how they fit into an extended family that includes their ancestors. We are in a mountain culture that feels old and deeply rooted, that follows a traditional way of life. It is a world the author would finally love and call his own.
We also come face-to-face with provincialism, intolerance, and—perhaps Appalachia’s defining legacy—the horrors of the coalfields and chemical plants. We see clearly what rapacious greed and exploitation have done for generations to much of
the landscape and to the lives of the people. And we learn of the stream of reformers and missionaries, ever ready to show Appalachia the way, whose real contributions tend to be negligible or absurd.
In this clear-eyed, beautifully rendered telling of his story and his father’s, John O’Brien gives us, as well, the history and true heart of Appalachia.
Customer Reviews:
History.......2007-03-11
This book contains a lot of historical observation about West Virginia from a native son. The author makes the culture of Appalachia come alive, dispeling the stereotypes. I enjoyed the author's personal journey - leaving the area and returning again to address the questions that we all have about how our home towns have influence on our lives. In addressing the issue of "hillbillys" he reminds us that we can all be victims of others' perceptions. He makes me want to add West Virginia, specifically Appalachia to my travel plans.
Closure.......2007-01-22
I hope the John found the closure he was looking for through the writing of this book. May he rest in peace.
A la William Faulkner, but ..........2007-01-10
The author is trying to emulate the stylist Faulkner, but with little success. In architectonics, O'Brien's work is but a poor copy of the fascinating monologues one finds in Faulkner's "Light in August."
He has better watch out his un-English sentences(e.g. pp. 122, 134, 181 of the 2001 Anchor Books edition).
Beautiful, Piognant .......2004-12-16
I love to read, but im not much of a writer. However, i was so moved after reading this book that i had to share my thoughts. For years I have struggled with labels while traveling outside of the my home state of WV. If people even know that the state exists i get comments such as "Are you married to your Uncle? Ha, Ha" I would get so frustrated because these people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, Where do they get this?!? O'Brian does an excellent job of explaining where the stereotypes of our region origiate and how some people then unknowingly act the part of the stereotype.
I had to read this book for a college course, but i could not put it down. First, it is interesting in that I am from the area his book describes and I can identify with so many of his feelings about his home. Second, unlike many reviews at this site, I believe that his life story is essential to the book. His dads relationship is described to aid in the understanding of the region and the people, and i personally found his introspection honest and refreshing, instead of trying to remove himself from the book he put his soul in it.
West Virginia is more than a depression attempt at writing.......2004-04-28
John O'Brien's At Home in the Heart of Appalachia is neither inspring, uplifting, or well written. His book is filled with overindulgent excuses for his father's racism while perpetuating stereotypes of Appalachia. His writing is aimless. In some areas, he seems too engrossed in self pity, and in others he just seems to be building on an image of a man he obviously created for himself in college. Attempts to strip his ego are shallow and unconvincing. At times, I really saw, or felt I saw, O'Brien trying to get a book out by deadline. If this was a writing that glorified the Appalachian experience or its people, he would have had an excuse. John O'Brien had some fuel to work with, if this was the case. The Woodland's Institute would have been suited for a book of this nature. His returning "home" may also have been a great journey, if it truly was his home. It wasn't. New Jersey was his home and John happened to have relatives in West Virginia.
