3 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-07-02

good book .. nothing to write home about .. a bit wordy .. a lot of history that I did not care about, I just wanted a good manual ..

5 out of 5 stars Cattle Dogs.......2007-05-12

I highly recommend this book. It provides everything that you need to know about your Cattle Dog. It has great detail/history, explanations, and it's easy to understand. I've followed the instructions and training tips that have been provided in this book to raise, and train my 12 week old Cattle Dog. The results have been outstanding. My puppy is responding just as the book stated that he would. Goodluck, it's worth your money!!

5 out of 5 stars G'day, Mate..........2007-02-14

There he was. A cute little red and white puppy with big brown eyes. He melted my heart instantly. This was the first time in over twelve years that I had been completely bowled over by a dog. I had a dog, a beautiful spaniel/terrier mix that went by the name of Topper. She was my pride and joy and when I had to put her to sleep I really thought I was never going to be taken in by another dog until I saw him.

I really didn't ask any questions about this dog. I didn't even know it was a male until I got him home. We named him "Bongo" because before he took off running, he beat the ground with his paws. Speaking of paws, all my friends' looked at them and told me he was going to be huge. I refused to believe it. Not my baby. Maybe he would weigh 35...40 lbs tops.

Little did we know that our baby was part Mastadon. In less than aweek he grew three inches in all directions. The solid white parts were giving way to little red freckles, the angelic look he used to give me in the morning was becoming steadily more demonic and at the end of a month, we had something on our hands that was about as friendly as a Tazmanian Devil.

What the hell kind of dog is this, anyway?

We had a friend tell us that Bongo was an Australian Cattle Dog. Known for their inexhaustive energy stores. This dog was used to rounding up cattle and then after it rounded up a few hundred steers, it wanted to fetch a few dozen times and then maybe go on a brisk twenty mile hike. The dog was literally buzzing from morning to night.

And tempermental...oh man, you don't know the half of it. He would flip his dog dish and grumble when he was disatisfied, he'd yell at the cats and push them over with his extra large head, he'd try and knock my feet out from under me all while getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

We went to the bookstore one day and loaded up our arms with all kinds of reading materials. This book plainly says that the cattledog is a completely different kind of dog. No kidding. We even wanted Cesar Milan to pay a housecall. We were running out of patience, but it turned out, that's exactly what Bongo needed and to be honest, we did too. We took this little guy in not even knowing what to expect. It was kind of unfair to him. But I really was beginning to fall in love with him, even though a few times I wanted to strangle the thing.

Two years later, and after making this book (along with a few others) our Bible, we have a beautiful dog. He's kind, he's gentle, he's loaded with personality and he is just a great addition to our world. This book and its advice works, but you must work with your dog on a regular and consistent basis. You must be willing to know that yes, he is part of the family, but he is still a dog. He's not a human. He's a dog and he wants to be treated like one. He wants boundaries, discipline, affection, and most of all he wants you to notice him. This is not the kind of dog that should be left alone to his own devices, that is unless you want your backyard to look like the moon's surface, your garden hoses to be perforated, and your trees gnawed down to little nubs. You must be willing to give your heart, your soul, and your mind to this breed and I promise you, you will get something incredible in return.

I love my dog. In fact, when I take my dog out for a walk, I just cannot believe why other people would settle for such ugly stupid dogs when they could have something beautiful and wonderful like my beautiful Bongo-Boy.

No, I'm not biased...why?

Get the dog you deserve with the help of this book!

Peace & Blessings...

5 out of 5 stars Informative........2006-03-25

We recently adopted a cattledog mix, going in blind, knowing nothing about the breed. This book was an excellent eye opener and helped overcome a lot of obstacles that may have otherwise caused us to reconsider our choice of puppy.

5 out of 5 stars Happy ACD Owner in Alaska.......1999-12-08

Narelle has done a wonderful job with this book, updating the older version with new photos and relevant information. The book is filled with wonderful pictures of many Australian Cattle Dogs and puppies and shows them herding, playing, sleeping, in the show ring, and doing agility and obedience work. I particularly love the picture of a wonderful blue cattledog named Darcy sleeping on the couch with one of her owners, Rick Williams, on page 130! Although Australian Cattle Dogs are not a breed for everyone because of their high energy level and high intellengence coupled with the need to herd things, the book gives a well-rounded view of the breed. Really a fun book and highly reccomended!

Book Description

The Australian Cattle Dog was developed as a breed by stockmen who wanted a tough, working dog who could drive cattle in the harsh environment of the Australian outback. A number of different dogs were used to produce the ideal type, and these included the native Dingo, the Collie, imported from Britain, and the Australian Kelpie. The authors trace the origins of this tough, intelligent working dog from the Australian outback to the first imports to reach North America, Britain and the rest of Europe. All aspects of caring for the Australian Cattle Dog are covered, such as feeding, exercise, breeding and rearing, and there is a special section on the principles of training and the working role of the Australian Cattle Dog.

2 out of 5 stars not what I was looking for.......2007-07-16

I think for a breeder or trainer, they might find this book helpful, for the lay dog owner..not really what I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars so so.......2007-05-13

Not terribly useful.........I thought it would be more of an Owner's Manual and I'd like to see more specifications, links, you know, questions like "How long do they live?" "Average weight?" "When do they stop growing?" "Do they ever grow up?"

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely THE BEST ACD book.......2002-09-07

I have owned and raised ACD's for years and this is by far the best book on the breed I have found. I have really enjoyed the reading and the photographs of famous Cattle Dogs. This is not another "puppy care" book - it is really about ACD's. It is a must for any serious Cattle Dog owner or fan.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite ACD Book!.......2001-11-04

I absolutely love this book. It's almost as if the book was written about my own dogs! I find myself laughing and saying, "Yes! That's Blue!" or "That's exactly what Ready does!" I actually recommend THE COMPLETE ACD for owners of any breed because of the good information that can apply to all dogs.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Australian Cattle Dog.......2000-01-01

This book has the best breed specific information I have found. It is one of the few books that covers training techniques for "heelers" working with cattle.

3 out of 5 stars ACD.......2007-08-23

I enjoyed the book. I didn't know to much about Cattle Dogs. Its a good basis for first books. But I was hoping it would have gone into more information then it did.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-02

book is great .. everything is straight forward .. good ideas and reccomendations .. easy to read ..

4 out of 5 stars useful.......2006-10-24

Unlike many low-cost "breed" books, this one actually does have breed specific information in it. Discusses typical Heeler temperament and behavior. Plus, lots of nice photos.

1 out of 5 stars Not for deaf ACD owners.......2002-12-07

I do not recommend this book if you are a deaf ACD owner. The book states that deaf dogs do not make good companion dogs and does not give any facts for their statement. As the owner of two deaf ACD's , I am glad I didn't take the advise of the author. I would have to agree that this is a breeder book and is not for those who wish to aid the overpopulation instead of add to it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2001-08-01

I have an Australian Cattle Dog myself, and this is the book that I had from the very beginning. It was pretty good, though it didn't give much info on how to deal with the Cattle Dogs large amount of energy. If you want a book on the background of the Australian Cattle dog, this is a good book, but don't get it if you are looking to solve problems.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A missed occasion.......2006-04-24

I own an ACD and am interested to know as much as possible about this fascinating kind of dog, in terms of behaviour and peculiarities.
I have to say that, apart a couple of info in the first 3 chapters (roughly 35 pages), the rest of the book has only 20 good colour pictures of ACD and nothing else focused on this dog!
It is more a normal guide to a happy healthy dog than a book on ACD. It would have been much more correct to specify this general approach.
The price is right but this is not enough.

3 out of 5 stars Half on ACDs, half on dogs in general.......2003-07-31

I enjoyed this book, but didn't realize until I received it that only half the book is devoted to ACDs. The other half is about dog/puppy care in general and seems to be universal to this series of books. Good information, just not specific to ACDs as I had hoped.

Lots of pictures of adorable ACD puppies, as well as full-grown dogs. Good information about techniques for keeping an ACD busy and active, too. Medium-size puppy Kong toys filled with kibble, peanut butter and topped with a treat have helped my ACD stay in her crate all night without complaint, and saved my sanity!

Another quibble, the book tends to assume that you selected your puppy from a reputable breeder. The author doesn't seem to acknowledge owners who rescue pups, who have found an ACD pup by chance, or who have a mixed-breed, part-ACD pup.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for the cattle dog owner.......2001-09-27

This book really covers the temperment of the breed. Offers training and what to expect of living with a cattledog. I had a hard time putting the book down.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book especially on training!.......1999-06-14

As a first time Australian Cattle Dog Owner we were unprepared at how to care for and deal with the cattle dog that adopted us. This book has lots of good information on caring for cattle dogs and is the only one that had information in it on leash breaking our dog. All in all an excellent book for people new to dogs and Australian cattle dogs in particular.

4 out of 5 stars A very informative read for owners new to the breed........1998-04-23

As a new owner of an ACD pup, I felt that I needed to know more information about the breed as a whole so that I could obtain insight on how to deal with my dog. This book was very informative and gave a good description of the ACD. I feel now that I better know how to handle my dog, but also how to make him the happiest. It gave great ideas on how to spend quality time with your dog using activites that they enjoy. I feel that our bond has definitely improved after reading this book. Read the book, get ready for some fun, and by all means go buy a can of tennis balls.

3 out of 5 stars Cattle Dog Lover.......2007-03-14

This book is loaded with pictures of show dogs and gives a lot of history of the development of the breed and the introduction of the Cattle Dog to the US. I found that I needed to treat my book rather gently, physically; so for anyone buying the book, be careful not to break or bend the back too much, I had some pages pop loose. All in all I liked the book. Some of the information on critical topics like genetic related health problems was very accurate, just outdated.

Christain has combined history and personal experience to bring the public a better understanding of this Australian breed of stockdog. Filled with never before seen photos and an impressive list of references this book is a" must have" for Australian Cattle Dog enthusiasts. The 15 chapters in the book take you from history of the breed through the versatility of the breed to "Cattle Dog Firsts." An impressive list of great dogs.

Christain covers breeding, health, and showing in both conformation and herding. To say this is a complete book on the Australian Cattle Dog would put it lightly. A pat on the back for Kathy Christain, author of THE AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG

AUSTRALIAN BARKERS AND BITERS By Robert Kaleski. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published in Sydney 1914 in a Limited Edition, this rare early dog book is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. A later, and still very scarce edition was enlarged and revised with the addition of many early dog breed photographs. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished this edition using the original text and photographs, as part of their Classic Breed Books series. Although this book deals mainly with observations, history and research on the Kelpi, Heeler, and other Australian Sheep and Cattle Dogs, several other dog breeds peculiar to Australia are discussed in some detail. Two hundred and fifty six pages contain twenty two comprehensive chapters:- The Origin of the Dog. - Variations of the Dog Species. - Creation of Tame Dogs. - The Noble Dingo. - The Australian Cattle Dog. - The Kelpie. - The Barb. - Sheep-dog Trials. - Judging and Buying. - Kangaroo Dogs. - Bush Greyhounds. - True Greyhounds. - Beagles. - Cocker Spaniels. - Fox Terriers. - Alsatian Wolf Dog. - Laws on Dogs. - Dog Fighting. - Dog Fancying. - Australian Dog Workers. - A Premier Sheep-dog Trial Judge. - "God's Dogs". This is a fascinating read for any Sheep and Cattle Dog enthusiast or historian of the breeds, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. 1 out of 5 stars Shame on you, Narelle Robertson!.......2007-05-11

I bought this book two days ago on a whim. I've been researching Australian Cattle Dogs and am very keen to adopt one soon. So far, I've purchased a few books and am getting to know a lot about the breed. This book, however, was a huge disappointment. There were nice pictures of dogs, which I liked, and that was about it. Almost all content in this book is simply general information on dogs and dog ownership. There is very little specifically devoted to Cattle Dogs. What's most infuriating is that the book's author, Narelle Robertson, is the famed breeder and owner of the Kombinalong line of Australian Cattle Dogs, reknown for show winning champion Australian Cattle Dogs. The fact that somebody so famed and involved in the breed would authorize such a slapdash book is upsetting. Narelle Robertson's book is so general (and features so many obvious product placements), that I view it as a great disservice to AuCaDo owners. It's very clear that her priorities were in the marketing of the book, and the money from product placements. It's a shame, since she should have been focused on the dog breed that is her livelihood.

2 out of 5 stars Very Lacking on the Specific Subject of the Book.......2005-07-24

This book contains a lot of good info on general dog care; however, that's not the kind of book I wanted.

Maybe 30 pages out of 200+ are actually about the specific breed rather than dogs in general.

        1 out of 5 stars disaster..........2004-12-01

This is probably one of the worst of all books about ACDs (although some others may qualify as well). Unusable information, combined with pictures of similar quality...a complete waste of money. Instead, add a few $$ and go for John&Mary Holmes.

3 out of 5 stars Australian Cattle Dogs by Narelle Robertson.......2003-03-08

It explains the origins of the Australian Cattle Dog quite well,
but the rest of the book is very vague on training specifically
an ACD and also half of the book is for dog food, toy, training
tool advertisements. Really didn't get much out of it except
        for the great pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Australian Cattle Dogs.......2000-01-22

This is a good general book and gives great breed standards. I would like to see more books with the simplicity and organization of this book. It also has great genral dog care tips for all dogs.
