This book was recommended highly, and I was not disappointed! The information coverage is all that I expected and more. So many dog books digress into information that applies to all dogs, but this one sticks to breed specifics.
There is only one thing I would improve in future editions: more photos in color. However, knowing that many of the historical photos were originally in black & white, I would not edit them out... the idea is merely to add more full-color recent photos, especially showing the full range of Aussie activities, trials, games, etc. One can never see too many beautiful Aussies!
the essential aussie book.......2007-03-23
Loved all the info and the detailed account of where these amazing dogs come from. As I anticipate the arrival of my first Aussie puppy I have read and reread the puppy portions. I love that they included a chapter on the Mini-Aussie which is what I am getting. They are not some freakish version, only developed by breeding some of the finest smaller Aussies. I will keep this book as a reference forever. A fabulous gift for the Aussie owner.

The same information is available in most books about dogs. I was hoping this books would be more specific. The pictures are helpful because Aussies come in such a wide variety of colors.

This book as LOTS of info on the Aussie like health/nutrition, basic training, history, behavior... well, like the title says! It has a neat chapter on the different activities you can do with your Aussies like different competitions. Another whole chapter on training for working and a very informative chapter on service training.
This would be a great little book to check out the breed to make sure you want an Aussie in the first place. Also, if you just adopted a puppy or adult and need some quick good info before you go off to buy that $45 Aussie book :)

Well Organized and Presented, but Thin on Content.......2005-01-06
While many of the suggestions and explanations about this wonderful breed are consistent with other research documents I've read, I felt like there should've been more "meat" or text included on certain topics. In particular obedience training, feeding and the like.
Australian Shepherds are *extremely* intelligent dogs (far more so than most labs or retrievers for example - though I certainly love those breeds as well (and own one)). For this reason they have very specific training requirements if both owner and dog are ultimately to have a good relationship. However this book gave equally thin treatment to this topic as it does for others of less importance. I sort of get the impression the author said "well we can only dedicate x pages per topic on average" and then stuck to that, instead of allowing more pages for the really important stuff and skimming the more obvious or less critical topics.
This book *will* teach you something you didn't know most likely, but it will also leave you wanting more in-depth info. I'd give it 3.5 if I could....
Friendly Advice: while I was well aware of the breed's characteristics before buying, please DO NOT let your kids (or your own conscience) talk you into buying one of these dogs just because you've seen them catching frisbees on the beach or because they're so cute. If you do not have the time and space to dedicate to this dog every single day, you will wind up with a frustrated and destructive dog. Shepherds need to keep their minds going and their bodies going as often as possible; they are not couch potatoes like many other breeds of similar temperment and looks.
Also be sure to check your local Australian Shepherd rescue for available dogs before going to a breeder. You'd be amazed how many great dogs are out there already looking for homes. Don't contribute to the dog overbreeding problem in this country (more than 15 million dogs are euthanized every year in the US).

Liz Palika did a wonderful job writing this book. I've been breeding, showing, and training aussies for 12 years and this is one of the best books written on them. I really enjoyed the pictures of the dogs in the 1st edition from the Bayshore bloodlines.

This book has it all, and more importantly, it was written by someone who HAS Australian shepherds (most books out there are not written by those whom actually live with them). A nice overview of the breed and the possibilities it holds. Great work.
Great book.......1997-11-17
This book is an up to date look at Aussies . You have to have it in your library. I especially liked the description of the Aussie shadow tendancy. She writes do you mind scooting your chair back and bumping into the dog? My Gwen is under the chair as I'm writing this. This is the book I lend to my friends who are thinking about getting an Aussie. The pictures are beautiful. I did notice a couple typos.
An outstanding book on an exceptional breed........1997-02-17
The Australian Shepherd, Champion of Versatility, written by Liz Palika and published by Howell Book House should be required reading for anyone interested in the breed. Mrs.Palika has included everything you should know about the Aussie before you deside, and you will, to add one or two to your household.

The book does give a good quick overview for a new owner or someone considering the breed. I did find some useful information, some good training tips and the price was good for its content. I was looking for a bit more specific information, mainly on how much to feed this breed, which I did not find. This would be the type of book to check out from a library rather than a home resource.

This is a quick book to read, but although small has a lot of information packed into. Throught the streamlining of the book, the author and editors managed to also make it readable in a format that flows quickly. Great for potential owners of Aussies that do not have a lot of time to sit and read a longer or less readable book.

This is about the best book on the subject I have read with one exception. I would have given FIVE stars except for something about the title and content;I have read most all of it before VERBATIM. This book seems to have a different cover photo,a softcover vs.hardcover,different publication date,authored by "editors" vs. a specific person,and two seemingly separate publishers than The Australian Shepherd:How To Keep A HAppy Healthy Pet. This is the "revised" edition. It would have been nice to know that this more current{by two years!} edition was ESSENTIALLY the same book I already purchased! Why change the cover? Anyway,caveat emptor. I recommend the public library or the internet as additional sources of information contained in this book{s}. Got me this time.

Sheila has done an outstanding job on this new book about our wonderful breed ! It gives very important information on our breed including care, training, grooming, nutrition, and even includes information on the breed's rescue program...
Its a MUST for new Australian Shepherd owners and a good reference book for those who have been in the breed for awhile...
I strongly suggest breeders puprchase a copy to go home with every puppy they sell....

Indeed,this book is about the best I've read on the subject thus far and is well balanced. I would have given FIVE stars however one thing perturbed me no end! This book contains the SAME information as THE ESSENTIAL AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD and is mostly verbatim! The two books have entirely different titles,the author of one is not listed on the cover of the other,the publishers seem to be different and the dates of publication are different. Any reasonably intelligent ,trusting person would assume they were different books! Caveat emptor. I purchased both books,paid twice and about the only difference between them was one was hardcover and one was paperback...oh,and though the content inside was almost exactly the same,the covers were very different for some odd reason. I would search the library next time.
OK advice but not precise enough.......2001-08-30
You cannot go wrong reading this book but do not expect to go train your Aussie to be a model dog citizen afterwards. There is not enough detail or practical advice on rewarding or motivating your dog, understanding individual temperments, or picking a trainer to work with. Indeed, much of the book reads like a template where the primary difference, besides the photos and breed history, between this book and any other dog-training guide would be the words "insert breed name here."
If you are interested in owning and training an Aussie, please first review the material at Aussierescue.org. Aussie are clever, playful, and engaging. If you own one, you know what it is like to have your dog watch you and to have an silent furry shadow underfoot.
Explains Aussie Freakish Behaviour.......2001-07-30
This book is a handy manual because it is concise, pretty cheap..and tells you almost everything that the other books do - plus, the front photo is a masterpiece - that is the weirdest looking Australian Shepherd ever! Most are black & tan (the 'Tri' color) or white/grey/black spotted (the 'merle' color) but I haven't seen many that are both! A book like this is a lifesave if you aren't very familiar with the breed. Explains their intense energy level and need for 'a job' to do..and why many people are too stupid and lazy to own an Aussie..or any dog really. But seriously, don't get an Aussie unless you can absolutely promise to go on a minimum of 3 walks a day. Book also explains their need to herd things..their desire for an orderly existence and why crows and seagulls and livestock and other disorderly animals annoy them. And why, if you can provide the energy packed environment that they need, the Aussie is a great animal to own.
A Book For All Aussie Lovers.......2001-05-25
This is a wonderful book about Australian Shepherds. It has almost anything an owner or soon to be owner could want: A short history of the breed, the ASCA and AKC standard, feeding, grooming, health & care, and more. Liz does a very good job of explaining everything like how an Aussie makes a good family pet, but it wants a job and plenty of excersize. It also has nice color photographs and a section a baisic training by Ian Dunbar. Liz's other book, "Australian Shepherds, Champions of Versitility" is also a great book. If you are looking into getting an Aussie, or already own one, this is a must read!

My title line sounds very harsh, but I expect high quality when I purchase a book. The author tells a lot of heart felt stories of Australian Shepards saving the day, but shares very little about the intricacies of the breed (i.e. Conditions the dogs are prone to). They are smart...well no joke! Tell me something that I could not pull up on someone's personal web site. I want research, not just personal experience (which seems pretty extensive...by the way). Oh an additional "by the way", there are two specific pet product brands that are pushed beyond belief. You have to be sceptical of where the motivation came from. Save your money & buy a book by another author.
The number one book to learn about the Australian Shephards........1998-11-13
I was so pleased to see the picture of the little black tribitch on the front cover with the blue merle puppy, you can imagine myresponse standing in the pet store seeing MY DOG on a book. I was amazed!!! The book is really helpful.

This book is a basic dog book with pictures of Aussies stuck in. I did not find it interesting or worth buying. Get All About Aussies, either version, or Australian Shepherds, Champions of Versitility, instead.

No one has more experience with Aussies than Jean Hartnagle, and her book is still unsurpassed as the authoritative work on the breed. You would have to buy 3 other books to get all the info in this one.
An excellent book, but some info outdated.......1997-11-17
This is an essential reference for any Aussie lover. It has good pictures and a few pedigrees of foundation dogs. Some of the training and showing information is outdated, I think, since new positive training methods work better.
