Partial Backyard Bird Identification.......2007-05-30
It is a nice book but did not contain exactly what I was looking for - until you actually have it in your hands, there is no way to know. I am not sorry I bought it but this information was contained in other books I have.
Nice reference book.......2007-05-28
This is a good book for the novice birdwatcher, like myself. It shows the most common birds in color photographs along with info on each. A great starter book for wild bird lovers.
Bird Identification.......2007-05-20
This book was given as a gift and the receiver hasn't had it long enough for a comprehensive review. However, a brief look throught the book found it detailed and illustrated great. It is still hard to identify a bird if you are not aware of it's name. The birds don't remain at the feeder that long and to go through the book takes time.
The suggestion for scopes and bins is helpful as these tools are needed. If the receiver is persistent in following the suggestions, I believe the book will prove to be useful.
Save your money........2007-05-13
This book does not amout to much. There is little information and not many birds.
Backyard Bird Identification Guide.......2007-02-18
I got the book for my husband. He received a very nice bird feeder as a gift and was wanting to know what some of his guests are. Some of them he knew, but a lot of them he did'nt. The book helps a lot.
Book Description
Garden Insects of North America is the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide to the common insects and mites affecting yard and garden plants in North America. In a manner no previous book has come close to achieving, through full-color photos and concise, clear, scientifically accurate text, it describes the vast majority of species associated with shade trees and shrubs, turfgrass, flowers and ornamental plants, vegetables, and fruits--1,420 of them, including crickets, katydids, fruit flies, mealybugs, moths, maggots, borers, aphids, ants, bees, and many, many more. For particularly abundant bugs adept at damaging garden plants, management tips are also included. Covering all of the continental United States and Canada, this is the definitive one-volume resource for amateur gardeners, insect lovers, and professional entomologists alike.
To ease identification, the book is organized by plant area affected (e.g., foliage, flowers, stems) and within that, by taxa. Close to a third of the species are primarily leaf chewers, with about the same number of sap suckers. Multiple photos of various life stages and typical plant symptoms are included for key species. The text, on the facing page, provides basic information on host plants, characteristic damage caused to plants, distribution, life history, habits, and, where necessary, how to keep "pests" in check--in short, the essentials to better understanding, appreciating, and tolerating these creatures.
Whether managing, studying, or simply observing insects, identification is the first step--and this book is the key. With it in hand, the marvelous microcosm right outside the house finally comes fully into view.
- Describes more than 1,400 species--twice as many as in any other field guide
- Full-color photos for most species--more than five times the number in most comparable guides
- Up-to-date pest management tips
- Organized by plant area affected and by taxa for easy identification
- Covers the continental United States and Canada
- Provides species level treatment of all insects and mites important to gardens
- Illustrates all life stages of key garden insects and commonly associated plant injuries
- Concise, clear, scientifically accurate text
- Comprehensive and user-friendly

Very Helpful.......2007-10-03
one shouldn't take this book lightly, it is a large and heavy tome with lots of great information and photos. i think that the author, whitney cranshaw, did a great job in how he presents the information. one bit that i would have liked to have is distribution map. information is given about distribution, but i like to have maps too.
i would have enjoyed even more information on each insect he covers, but that would make the book at least twice it's size. that probably wouldn't work at it is already 656 pages long.
it would also be neat if this author could do books on different regions of our country in this format.

Garden Insects of North America: The Ultimate Guide to Backyard Bugs (Princeton Field Guides)
Excellent reference guide. I'm a Master Gardener and it is frequently used when we either have a question of our own or from a Help Line caller. I liked it enough that I felt I needed my own personal copy for home and consulting use.
Wonderful Book for Any Gardener!.......2007-07-01
This book is truly amazing, and seems to be a very comprenehsive reference. I am still a 'budding' gardener, and all-too-often, I find myself in need of identifying a garden pest so that I can eradicate it properly.
What I love most about this book is that it has pictures of so many different types of the same bug, as well as the different life stages of the bus (for example, it has over 68 different pictures of numerous types of aphids, the different stages, and what the infected plant's symptoms may show). Additionally, the pictures are clearly labeled!
I'm thrilled with this book, and I'm sure I will use it for many, many years to come!
YOU GET YOUR MONIES WORTH WITH THIS ONE!.......2007-04-13
They really don't make one volume books on a given subject much better than this one. Now do keep in mind that one book simply cannot cover every single insect, bug or critter that plague a garden or orchard, but this one comes pretty close. The photographs are wonderful and not only give clear pictures of the adult insect, but also in it's various stages of growth, from egg on up. I am constantly turning to this work for the help I need. Other than using it for my garden and orchard, I also photograph insects and other small creatures and plants for a hobby. Many of these insects are quite difficult to identify and I find myself turning to this volume more and more for initial identification before I grab a more detailed text type book. The written descriptions are quite accurate as is the other information, such as living conditions, geographical locations, life cycle, etc. If you must purchase only one book covering the subject, then this is the one you want. Recommend this one highly.
Best book out there for IDing insects.......2007-01-11
Being a Master Gardener I'm often called upon to identify a garden invader. There are many book available but none have proven adequate. This book does the job well. The photos of the insects in all stages is of great value. This book is divided into sections so that you can research by type of damage or plant being effected. It gives a brief biology lesson and also has a chapter on the "good guys." I'd say this is a must for any gardener. All my friends who have seen it are ordering one for themselves.
Book Description
Bird watching is America's second most popular hobby after gardening. According to a recent survey, approximately 63 million Americans report that they watch and feed birds at home. With its beautiful four-color layout, The Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible is the ideal guide for beginning to intermediate bird watchers. And author Sally Roth's reassuring and friendly voice make this book a standout among the many more academic-style bird books currently on the market. Each colorful section is arranged alphabetically and addresses birds from each region of the country-even explaining the different food requirements for birds in different regions. Roth helps readers cut the costs of their favorite activity with economical tips throughout, from buying less expensive seed like cracked corn to using food leftovers as winter treats. Readers will delight in the color photos of the most popular feeder birds and will enjoy projects for making feeders, food mixtures, and 'food crafts,' such as birdseed wreaths.

Help! He Won't Give Back My Book!.......2006-08-15
I barely got to look at the thing!
I made the mistake of allowing my young nephew to glance through it a few days ago. The next thing I know he takes it home with him and won't bring it back to me. (Well, he 'would' because he's that kind of guy... but I think I am going to allow him to keep it.)
Apparently this book had the remarkable effect of sparking in him a sudden interest in the hobby of attracting and feeding birds.
Actually, all summer long we have been visited at our little place in the country by birds of all sorts and we have been feeding them everyday so they wouldn't get bored and go away, but my nephew didn't have any interest in them... that is, not until I let him look at this book.
As I said, I did not really get to look at this book, but let's base my 5 star review on the enthusiasm it sparked in him. He says it is a great book because the information within is very interesting and very in-depth. He also loves the plentiful beautiful pictures which helps keep him attracted all the more to the subject matter.
I am very pleased that a child growing up in today's sterile electronically-obsessed society can still find something very natural and positive to invest his time and interest in. Aren't you?
EXCELLENT ADDITION TO YOUR BIRD LIBRARY.......2006-06-29
This one is just filled with excellent ideas. After years of birding you would think there would be no new ideas...wrong! I picked up quite a lot from this book. It is well organized, easy to use and easy to read and understand. I am glad I received it as a gift and recommend you get a copy if this is where your interests are. Overall, recommend this one highly.
Great Book cheaply made.......2005-12-18
The information contained in the book is great, one of the best bird books I own. To bad the publisher went the cheap way and produced a book using the hot glue binding process as opposed to a stitched binding. My copy has fallen apart!
Not well organized.......2005-12-07
I found this book to be very confusing. It is organized alphabetically... which makes no sense. There is no way to know what you need to know until you know what you need to know. It should be called the Bird book encyclopedia. A much much better book is the Audobon Backyard Birdwatcher. This book is not very colorful or engaging. I returned it.
Full of information.......2005-09-14
This book has answered so many questions for me. Reading this book is like talking with a friend who knows everything about birds and wants me to know it all too! The way it is set up alphabetically makes for an easy search and the pictures and diagrams are excellent. I will now have a more organized yard and happier birds.

A Fantastic Learning Experience and never Boring.......2001-08-11
As a 40 year old adult, I purchased this book because of my interest in birds and to review the content for my two nieces. This book turned out to be an exciting learning tool that completely held my interest. The reader is drawn into the content of the book as you go outside into the fresh air and interact with nature. What a wonderful job the author has done with the photos and the outlined activities. You can use this book over and over again, as each time you go outside, something is always different.
I am looking forward to reading further works from this author. I am sure my nieces will find this book as enjoyable as I have.

Great pocket size book........2000-12-18
The pictures are full color but only are of male birds. It only has the summer coloring also, not winter coloring of changing birds like goldfinches. Very nice up close pictures though. It shows great detail of birds in their natural settings. This book is perfect for a pocket or bag. It measures about 4" high and 6" long. This book contains basic data of common eastern birds. It states a brief description, identification, voice, habitat, and range. There is also information about basic birdwatching, identifying, and attracting birds in the introduction. I keep this book next to my home office computer where I have a feeder outside my window just in case I have an unfamiliar visitor.
Book Description
A stunning full-color guide to one of America’s most popular hobbies, with a region-by-region approach that unlocks the key to quick and easy bird identification.
Some 63 million Americans report that they enjoy observing their avian friends from their homes, and newcomers join the backyard bird-watching ranks all the time. But how do backyard birders learn who’s who when typical field guides bombard them with choices that take forever to sort out?
The Backyard Bird Lover’s Field Guide keeps it simple with a regional approach that cuts the possibilities down to size. Instead of poring over hundreds of species that don’t come anywhere near our own backyard, readers will find about 30 of the most likely prospects for each of seven regions of the country. Each entry is packed with advice on favorite foods, welcoming plants, and other temptations to lure birds to the backyard, along with glimpses into the birds’ personalities.
Sally Roth has a gift for conveying her passion for the subject along with her extensive knowledge. "Roth’s love for birds and her hands-on practical experience are inspiring," say Sharon Dunn and Michael Dunn, owners of the Duncraft Birdfeeding Catalog, about Roth’s Backyard Bird Feeder’s Bible. Filled with you-can-do-it features, such as tricks to help birders identify birds in a flash and ways to avoid confusing two similar birds, this new field guide will receive similar praise.

An easy to use guide for backyard birds.......1999-10-04
This book is a nice resource for beginner bird watchers because it is small and limited in its scope (only the birds you're likely to see in the eastern U.S.). This allows you to look up a bird very quickly. The illustrations are excellent, showing both the male and female of each species.
A concise guide to birds found east of the Rocky Mountains.......1998-06-16
This book allows the novice bird watcher to identify thecommon species of birds that inhabit the U.S. east of the RockyMountains. An easy-to-follow classification system allows the reader to quickly identify a bird before it flies away. All birds are represented in full color with male, female and juvenile colorings represented. A short description of the bird is available that also lists common traits and vocalizations. hearing is believing.......2007-04-15
Because the approach of this splendid CD is so straightforward, its value may best be explained by a first-person account of a user.
I've been enjoying backyard birds in my home in Costa Rica and now in Indiana for many years. Yet I've only rarely felt confident about linking a bird's song to its appearance. I guess I'm a visual guy. Birdsong sounded good but taught me almost nothing.
Then a helpful attendant in a Wild Birds Unlimited store steered me towards this Peterson Field Guides cd. I'm an admirer of the Peterson Field Guide books, so this was an easy sale.
Since then I've listened through the guide three or four times in my car. Already, I find my ears picking up on a particular birdsong when I'm not even paying attention. Typically, I look up and - mirabile dictu - there's the bird I've learned, almost unconsciously, to identify by its song before it appears before the eye.
That's good pedagogy. This is a good product.
Cheep. Cheep. And so much more.
Information Structured Well for new rookie bird watcher.......2007-02-21
tape and book enhances the learning process.
An excellent starter.......2000-05-03
This CD lives up to the high quality standards of the Peterson Field Guide series and is a marvelous introduction to bird songs. I have taught ornithology courses for a number of years and this is the CD I recommend to my students.
To anyone just discovering the joys of birding, visual identification of birds can be overwhelming with over 650 species found in North America alone. If visual identification is difficult, audio identification can be nearly impossible.
BACKYARD BIRD SONG comes to the rescue by focusing the listener's attention on 28 of the most common backyard birds. Learning these songs and calls will boost your confidence and enable you to identify nearly all of the birds you hear on a daily basis. The recordings are grouped into categories of similar sounds such as "sing-songers" and "whistlers." This clustering facilitates comparisons of potentially confusing bird vocalizations.
The CD's one down side is that you cannot go directly to the song of a given bird. You are limited to selecting a song grouping and then waiting for the desired bird.

Very helpful book.......2001-08-20
Thanks to this book, I am becoming an avid bird-watching. Together with my binoculars, I now have the tools I need to identify most every bird I see in my backyard or when I'm out hiking. An excellent resource.
Fabulous little book.......2000-04-28
This is a very useful little book. We bought this because we live in Seattle and recently bought a bird feeder that's now being visited by all kinds of birds. The book is really helpful - it starts with a few pages of info about how to attract birds to your garden and then the rest of the book has colour pictures of birds on the right-hand side page and writing about them on the left. The birds are organized by type, but also by colour which makes them pretty easy to identify. I think this is a great book for beginners like me who just want to know roughly who's feeding in their garden!
Great compact field guide for trips and walks!.......2000-03-11
This little field guide (6" x 4") is great for carting around. The west edition covers the states west of the Rockies very well. The full color book begins with a foreward about attracting birds. The next few pages describe how ot look at a bird, how to read the range maps, and how the birds are organized in this guide. And then here comes the birds! On each left bage, there is a catergorized column with the catergory name at top (catbird and bluebirds, chickadees and titmice, crowned sparrows, etc.), followed by range maps and a cool fact. On the ajoining right page, the birds are shown (male and/or female and/or juvenile). I think this is a great little field guide.
