No new information.......2007-05-12
I read the author's Website on this book and was convinced that it would be the next best thing to having a betta specialist in the family. Not so much. It's okay ... I'm a beginner enthusiast and am therefore hungry for knowledge, but this book didn't dive deep enough for me. That said, it is easy to read (I read the whole thing in one night), but I was left with unanswered questions (on topics like tank cleaning and tankmates). When I got to the end to find an ENTIRE CHAPTER dedicated to GRIEVING THE LOSS OF YOUR FISH ... please ... are you kidding me? Tell me about my fish ... don't pretend to be an expert on human emotions now, too.
In summary, it was good as a first-book purchase about bettas. It did not supplement my previous reading and I felt I'd wasted my money.
Great handbook for understanding Bettas.......2007-02-01
I liked this book quite a lot. I've had my betta for 6 months now and is doing really well. There are a lot of tips in this book to help take care of a betta. I would have liked a better understanding of how to treat the diseases that bettas get and greater understanding of how to identify them.
I recommend the book. I like that it was consolidated into one location. This book was far better than anything I found in my pet store.
Way too expensive, no new info, save your money........2007-01-31
I have to say I was very disappointed in this book. I read it in less than an hour and got absolutely no new information than what I have already read on-line during my own research. And I would not call it "extensive research" either. I've only owned a betta for a couple of weeks. My first betta died in a matter of days (probably bought him with an illness) so this prompted me to research how to better care for my next betta. I researched on-line, bought a book about aquariums in general, and bought this book. My general aquarium book has been much more useful to me in how to set up and maintain an aquarium for my betta. (The Simple Guide to Fresh Water Aquariums)
As far as the problem/solution section of the book? Very specific problem descriptions with very, very general solutions. Especially, one solution to check the oxygen level in the water. Just exactly how is one to do that? Is there a kit? Test strip? What? No indication whatsoever on how to do some of these tests.
Aged water? Why? No other resource I have seen speaks of the necessity of aging water. This sound very, very impractical and unnecessary if you are trying to maintain a 10 gallon tank. It would be helpful if he can list the benefits of this practice vs. simply treating your tap water and using it immediately.
It was also very, very simply written, terrible use of grammar, and sounded more like a school paper, rather than an expertly written, researched, edited book. Save your money and spend a couple of minutes researching whatever specific questions you have regarding bettas. It is out there in abundance.
The Best Betta book!.......2007-01-24
I bought this book as a gift for my girlfriend, and she absolutely loved it. We both have betta fish, and we've both looked over the book. It is clearly written, and contains just about all you need to know about betta's.
Everything you wanted to know about Bettas, but were afraid to ask...........2007-01-03
Other than the fact that this very thin "manual" is incredibly expensive, the material covered, the manner of presentation, the depth of the material et al is impressive. Marcus Song has done a wonderful job in assisting you in the setting up and care of Bettas. He has a superb section on problems and solutions and some nice web links to followup on.
I am sure that with enough searching and digging and less money, you could find all of the information in this book, but why when Marcus Song has done it all for you.

Useful for the bored or those interested in breeding.......2007-01-27
ÿIf you are just looking for a book about basic betta care, this book is not for you. Most of the book is about how to breed bettas. Myself, being interested in breeding bettas, found this book somewhat useful. Unfortunately there is not enough in-depth information about the breeding process and I had to refer to the internet on many occasions. The breeding information is useful, but if you want to really try to raise bettas read some other sources first. This book is an alright introduction to breeding. The only up side to this book are the color pictures, about one a page. The overview about "genetics" was rather confusing.
The author's first language was definitely not English. Most of the book is well written, but there are a few strange sentences here and there. A goodly portion of the book is stories the author had about breeding bettas. These stories were interesting, but not entirely useful.
I would not waste my time buying this book unless it was a last resort. If you can get it for free, it would be worth reading.
If you want to BREED bettas, ok.......2006-04-30
The title of this book is very misleading. There is actually very little information on how to care for bettas, and the entire focus of the book seems to be breeding. If you are looking for tips on how to breed bettas and how to create color combinations, this is a great book. However, I just wanted a betta care guide, and was very disappointed in this book.
Recommended for betta breeders and sellers.......2004-10-10
This book has some bits of information on basic betta care and it provides plenty of advice on the breeding of bettas (environmental conditions that encourage spawning and possible deviations that can occur during the spawning process) and the raising of the fry (first foods, water maintenance and jarring). It is recommended for those who are interested in the challenge of going into the mass production and sale of bettas for fun and for profit.
Very disappointing book.......2004-02-17
The inaccuracies in this book were too numerous to count. What's more, very little practical information is given on good fish husbandry; instead, the author seems to focus more on "bettas for profit."
At one point, Mr. Maurus remarks that bettas are short-lived, and as a result it is best "...not to get too attached." What kind of advice is this for serious pet owners?
Very poor, other than the pictures. Otherwise I would have rated it a 0.
better for breeders than those who just want pets........2004-01-02
The chapters are:
Introduction
What is a betta?
Keeping bettas
Spawning bettas
Raising the fry
Buying bettas
Raising bettas for fun and profit
So as you can see, it's mostly about breeding and selling betta fish. It would definetely be good if you're planning on doing that, but otherwise I wouldn't bother buying it. While it does have some helpful information (diagram of different parts and fins of the betta, information on housing, and foods) it would be much more helpful if there were a section on health (diseases and treating them) and diagrams of the different kinds of betta fish (since this is a book about breeding them!).
Average customer rating:
- OK for Breeders, not for casual pet owners
- Not for the average pet owner
- lots of info but not practical
- A great source of in-depth information about bettas
- absolutely useless marketing exercise

OK for Breeders, not for casual pet owners.......2006-07-15
I agree with the other reviewers. This book is great for breeders and it is interesting, but holds little educational value for someone who just wants to improve the life of their betta pet. I was disappointed.
Not for the average pet owner.......2005-01-19
This book is definetly not for begginers. It has a lot of technical information that is virtually useless to to the begginer and average pet owner. I'm sure I would give it a 5 star rating if I were a breeder, but I'm not. Save your money and look for another book if you are a begginer to keeping Bettas.
lots of info but not practical.......2004-11-27
While this book is labled the "complete pet owner's manual" it does not deal with the practicalities of owning a betta. As a person who is a new owner looking for the basics, this book was too academic and had too much infomation. I did enjoy reading the history behind the betta fish and that was about it. This book is great for someone looking to breed and keep and sell bettas, but for us humble pet owners it does not give the needed basic information for daily care.
A great source of in-depth information about bettas.......2004-10-10
This wonderful book has heaps of information about the various bubblenesting and mouthbrooding betta species groups. It covers the selection of bettas, their housing (the 2001 edition has a chapter on Tanks for Bettas), feeding, breeding, genetics (covering stuff like Betta Genes and the Punnet Square), as well as the prevention, identification and treatment of common betta diseases (environmental, chemical and infectious). It is indeed a great source of in-depth information about bettas and a complete pet owner's manual.
absolutely useless marketing exercise.......2004-09-20
This is a pretty book: lots of gorgeous color photos of gorgeous Siamese fighting fish ("Bettas") and glossy pages. That's its main, and only, selling point.
Unfortunately, the info contained is mainly academic filler which is badly organized so that it's difficult to skim through and find the more practical bits, such as: 1. how often and how much to feed these fish, 2. how a Betta would do if mixed in with other fish in a large aquarium (answer: badly), 3. how often the water should be changed if a Betta is kept in a small filtration-less container of 1 gallon or less, 4. most common types of commerical food and which ones are better, etc. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.
Thankfully, Petsmart has a liberal return policy...this one's going back pronto!

Betta Care.......2007-08-24
The book had a lot more information for breederds than for beginners,
but the information that a beginner could use, was very good.
It's A Life Saver.......2006-02-01
This book is exactly what it says, Quick and Easy. The chapter on white spot was a real life saver for our betta. We followed the instructions and quess what? It worked.
great book.......2005-01-31
This is an awesome book that tells you how to take care of bettas. It tells you information on feeding, housing, ilnesses, and different types of bettas. Bettas are much easier to care for if you read this astonishing informational book about bettas. This book even helped me cure my betta from an illness called Ich. Buy this low-price book if you plan to own a betta.

Customer Reviews:
Easily the worst book ever about Bettas.......2005-06-23
This is hardly a book about Bettas but as a previous reviewer noted a very basic aquarium book. As a Betta book it is so vague that it offers very little help or knowledge about Bettas' specific needs. The breeding and rearing the young section is a so vague & generalised that I really wonder if the authors have ever bred any Bettas at all. The food & feeding section is so full of errors & again vagueness that its best to ignore it. The disease treatments are mainly things that even your pet shop doesn't carry. Go to the numerous Betta sites on the web and the many Betta groups on yahoo! & you'll be far better off. Dr. Goldstein's book is light years better than this as is Walt Maurus'. Save your money for those and don't waste it on this one!
Very Basic Fishkeeping Information.......2000-05-12
This book is fine for the person who has little background or experience with aquariums. The vast majority of the book is very basic information about water quality, the nitrogen cycle, choosing a tank, filter, light, substrate and plants...very general aquarium basics. It is very disappointing if you are seeking specific and/or detailed knowledge about bettas. No information at all about tail and color variations, genetics, standards, etc. A better title would be, "Setting Up Your First Aquarium...and you can put a BETTA in there too!"
This is the BEST Betta Book for ANYONE!! :-).......1999-08-04
I just got this book a few days ago, and it is WONDERFUL! It covers everything in GREAT detail such as breeding, diseases and their prevention, and Genetics. A GREAT book out in the market today. So check it out!!! It is a book that seems to have everything anyone would need to know, in one!!!

Customer Reviews:
Mixed feelings.......2007-10-01
The book did not offer any information in the way of betta care, which makes it a poor resource for the general fish owner. However, it is a valuable resource for people wishing to breed Bettas as it contains extensive information on this topic. Personally, I enjoyed reading the historical background surrounding Betta breeding and evolution. This is truly a remarkable species of fish, and the author brought this out nicely. In addition, the photographs were better than any I have seen and the text was well composed.
However, like some other readers, I had a big problem with the information presented on Betta fighting. I know that the text is dated, written for a different era of betta owners (in the 1980s maybe?). Regardless, it was disturbing that such a practice would be discussed with such overt enthusiasm.
Basic information about bettas with nice pictures.......2004-11-01
This book offers basic information to starting hobbyists about the physiology, care, maintenance and breeding of the Betta splendens species, as well as the rearing of fry. The chapter on show standards and betta competitions has very nice pictures, including the albino strain that was successfully bred in Japan by Tanaka in 1994.
Not Very Informative.......2002-11-20
For anyone looking to find a detailed resource on the care of betta splendens, this book is not for you. A great deal of space in this book is devoted to the history of the fish, how they fight with other males (there are even explicit pictures of this process, which I was certainly not interested in seeing), and how to breed them. The sections covering their care are woefully lacking - the page on diseases merely lists the ailments and then offers a recommendation for another book in which to find more information. The tone of this book also stunned me - it is apparent that the author thinks of these fish as a source of income rather than as pets. Mention is made of fish that are not "exciting or saleable," and how sub-standard hatchlings should be culled or disposed of. I was quite offended by this - even the most dully-colored betta could find a happy home somewhere! The only reason I'm giving this book one star at all is because there are a lot of beautiful photos inside. It looks more like a picture book than anything else, actually. Very disappointing.
Pretty Good.......2002-01-05
I thought this book was pretty good. It showed you a lot of good pictures of the betta fish and it was very helpful in the history of betta fish, but some of the stuff that i was looking for in it, wasn't there, it just had a lot of pictures, and the history of bettas, it took up like 7 pages on the history where as they only did 3 sentences on how to take care of them!! if you are just looking for cool and good pictures of betta fish then you should buy this book, but if you are looking for information on betta fish then maybe you should look for a differnt boook, it was a great book, just not what i was looking for. I love betta fish and i think they are the cooles fish ever!
Leaves something to be desired........2001-09-22
After I rescued 2 beta fish from very poor conditions, I needed some really good information on their care. I did not find it in this book. It has a couple paragraphs about diseases, absolutely no charts or diagrams for biology or anything, and while the pictures were really beautiful, they had nothing to do with the topic on the same pages. There is a lot about how to have beta fights, and speaks of it in a very condoning tone! This is quite cruel and inhumane. There is I grant you some decent very basic info that you could glean off the internet yourself in an hour or two.

A good book for both betta keepers and non-betta keepers alike!
pretty good!.......1998-02-07
The book in my opion was pretty good and covers everything but genetics!!! This book is good if your intention is not on understanding the more complex side of how they get certain colors frm breeding bettas with certain genes!

too much useless information.......2006-02-23
This book has tons of information in it if you are writing a detailed report on the background, history and subtypes of bettas. It has a great deal about wild bettas and types of bettas. It wasn't until over half-way through the book that it actually told me information on keeping the betta splenden as a pet, and then it went back to the history lesson again.
The information that he provided about food types for Bettas was the most helpful part in the whole book.
Simply the best, as always. Highest recommendation!.......2006-01-29
If you can only get 1 book about Bettas this should be it. Dr. Goldstein is an expert and although I do disagree with some of his thoughts on the need to keep Betta variety names to a strict scientific form, I realise his intentions are good as well as valid. His overview of the Betta world is most complete and the many less known "wild" betta species receive excellent coverage in his effort. I do wish it had more photos of the more recent varieties that have been developed such as the Crowntail and Halfmoon but the descriptions are very good and a web directory guides readers to sites which will fill in the gaps. Any of Dr. Goldsteins books are an excellent addition to the Betta or other tropical fish fanciers library. I've been keeping Bettas for more than 40 years now and Dr. Goldstein's books were there every step of the way. This book will most definitely enhance your pleasure in keeping these fascinating little fish!
Book Description
Bettas are a unique tropical fish with attractive features. This handy book makes it easy and fun to find favorites from the many different types of bettas, and is a great tool to help make the best care choices for these colorful fish.

What you thought you knew........2007-05-12
I bought this book and have read it cover to cover. I thought I knew how to maintain a tank and feeding for a betta until I read this book. It uncovers all the myths that surround betta care even in the pet shops!!!
Excellent for anyone thinking of buying a Betta! They need more than just a bowl to survive. Bettas also need a mini heater, mini filter, and at least a 1 gallon tank per Betta!!!
Ehh..........2007-04-01
Ok, this was a kind of nice little book. But not really. The information inside of this book was VERY basic. It never went into details about betta housing (just kept on referring to betta bowls, tiny little bowls in which a betta WOULD NOT be happy in). So thats what took away some starts, was the lack of useful information.
This book had a lot of pictures. Pictures are all well and good, but not in this book. Most of the pictures were of older, boring 'veil tail' finned bettas. Those are bettas of the past. Now we have half moons, and crowntails, so much better. But there was one image of a half moon, and one or two of delta tailed bettas. So the betta community was not represented in the least by this book. Just old veil tails.
Overall, not a good book.
