4 out of 5 stars You Won't Be a Dummy after You've Read It.......2007-10-12

There couldn't be a better person to simplify cockatiel ownership into a "For Dummies" book than Diane Grindol. She is the author of "The Complete Book of Cockatiels," which you will want to get to complete your education if this one whets your appetite. The book is organized in an especially helpful way, listing first the joys of cockatiel ownership, then the hazards and diseases, then finishing up with a summary of do's and don'ts. In the process, you'll learn the not-so-obvious differences between males and females, the importance of diet, the gauntlet of avian diseases, setting up the cage, travel, grooming...in short, everything you'll need to know. When you reach the end of this informative and readable book, you will never view a cockatiel the same again. You will see complexity, fragility, intellect, and camaraderie, where before you saw only ornate plumage. If you read this book in preparation for cockatiel ownership, your new friend will find hundreds of ways to thank you.

5 out of 5 stars My first fave!.......2007-03-19

This is my favourite book about cockatiels, including with regard to illnesses and how to proceed in case of emergencies as not seen in other books that I owned about this subject.

5 out of 5 stars truly essential.......2001-10-11

I've read a lot of cockatiel handbooks available today, but it seems like none of them discuss cockatiel behavior. I was interested in why my cockatiels do the funny things they do, yet all the information I could find was on breeding, buying, and feeding. "The Essential Cockatiel" has that plus a great section on the behavior of cockatiels, like mutual grooming, possessiveness, and etc. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to these charming birds or wants to know some interesting information about their cockatiels.

5 out of 5 stars Cockatiels, A complete pet owners mannual.......2007-01-17

All i can say is GREAT. I have never owned a bird and this is what i needed to find all the info about buying, raising, and caring for the new member of the family. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good, informative and practical guide about Cockatiels.......2005-08-05

I just read the only review for this book....come on, it's not that bad at all. Risa Teitler has written some of the finest books on taming and training pet birds. This book is informative and has lots of practical information in it that covers all aspects of taking care of these unique birds. The book is 92 pages long, and the section on breeding starts on page 76 and goes to the end of the book, so that is a lot of breeding information for a beginner, but it says right there in the text that "...breeding birds are not usually tame to their owners once they begin rearing a family....if possible, keep a single pet and buy other cockatiels for breeding." So, forewarned is forearmed in this case. This fact is true of many other pet birds as well. At least she was honest about it.
And, of course the pictures are great, I mean who doesn't think that cockatiels are cute? I have given this book 4 stars because I thought it was a decent read and most people would like it.

1 out of 5 stars Insufficient focus and detail........2000-05-25

Absolutely without a doubt the best thing about Teitler's `Taming and Training Cockatiels' is the wonderful color photographs, but aren't most color photographs of cockatiels charming? Decent photographs are insufficient criteria to distinguish a book on birds. The book is written in a boring style that reads like, `look, here are my pets, aren't they great?' The book lacks focus and unsuccessfully attempts to cover too much material. There are promising introductory sections intended for readers that have never owned a bird before where instructions on making `first contact' without terrorizing the cockatiel are given. However, just a few pages later there is a large section on breeding birds. Surely it's unwise for a novice who wants a tame, loveable pet bird to delve into breeding at the same time? If the author had focused on one area, such as a guidebook for the new bird owner while avoided irrelevant distractions, I might have been able to suggest this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally I understand!.......2007-08-04

I've had cockatiels for years and just accepted their behavior as eccentric (which it is). Finally someone has shown me in a humorous way why they do some of those incomprehensable things. Cockatiels are still a little weird, but now I understand them a lot better.

2 out of 5 stars Just fun ... not a lot of information..........2007-03-19

I think this is a book and certainly a good gift for someone you know who has cockatiels as me.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the humour !.......2007-03-14

If you are an already experienced bird owner, you probably won't learn much you don't already know, but you will certainly get a good laugh out of it!
The illustrations are great and even though you can get through the entire book in about 10 minutes, I thought it was worth the low price.
It would also be a great book if you have cockatiels and want to help young children who are just learning to read to understand the birds better!

5 out of 5 stars Curious about your cockatiel?.......2006-11-06

If you are a recent cockatiel buyer or just want to know why your cockatiel does some curious things, this is a good book for you. I found it very helpful explaining some of the things my cockatiel does.

    3 out of 5 stars A nice little book.......2006-04-22

I bought this book based on Amazon reviews just like this one.

As a very knowledgable bird person who has had birds since childhood, first budgie parakeets and then cockatiels, I was very interested in this book as it seemed to be one of use for even the experienced cockatiel person.

While there are a few things I didn't know before I bought it and while the book is well written and done with great humor, I found it wasn't quite as good as I expected it to be. I expected it to include a lot more of things I didn't know instead of simply telling what I do know in a fun way.

For the more casual cockatiel companion, I think this is a nice book and certainly a great gag gift for someone you know who has cockatiels. But for someone who invests heavily into her birds, it is maybe a little too elementary. Most people who invest in their cockatiels like dog people do for their dogs will probably know almost all of it like I did.

This is a book more for entertainment than education. If you want to be educated on cockatiels, try the serious parrot training books. Those are much more helpful.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Good Pictures - Inaccurate Information.......2005-09-11

I bought the book due to its high variety of cocktiel mutation pictures. As for a lot of the information - I agree that it is outdated and therefore may cause a problem. My avian vet agrees and has given me the heads up on what is best for my little guy. So far she has not been wrong and he has become a strong and beautiful bird since being seen by her. The best advice I can give any bird owner is to ALWAYS take your bird to an "Avian Vet" and believe their expertise over any book! Books are helpful but not always correct. The reason I mention an "Avian Vet" is because they specialize in birds. You wouldn't go to a foot doctor if you had a cold, so why would you take your bird to a cat/dog vet? There really is a difference and it shows in how they handle and understand your bird. They are sometimes hard to find, but worth looking for. Good luck and happy bird owning! :)

    1 out of 5 stars Outdated Information.......2003-07-21

In Matthew M. Vriends book "The Cockatiel Handbook" you will find a lot of outdated information. Following this outdated information can have a devastating result for your cockatiel, and recommend that any new cockatiel owner purchase a book about the basic care of cockatiels that is published AFTER December 1999. Follow up-to-date information from local bird clubs and organzations, as well as having annual visits to your local avian vet. If you have any questions about basic care of your cockatiel, don't hesitate to ask your vet, pet store, or local breeder.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book with many colorful photographs............2003-01-14

THE COCKATIEL HANDBOOK probably includes most everything you want to know about cockatiels. Matthew Vriends is a Dutch-born ornithologist/biologist with an advanced degree in zoology. He has written many books on birds, and traveled extensively all over the world including Australia, the native habitat of the Cockatiel. Dr. Vriends includes material on feeding, grooming, housing, health care, training and breeding of cockatiels which he has apparently done for years.

In his first chapter, Vriends includes an overview of what to consider before you buy your bird. Throughout his book he elaborates on these initial points. He says costs should be a consideration if you intend to have healthy and happy birds. He includes text and photographs that show the kinds of cages, aviaries, and breeding boxes you might build to house your birds. He covers the diseases, illnesses, and accidents that can affect bird health and vet bills. He describes physical attributes of cockatiels such as hooked beaks, growing claws, and flight feathers must be addressed to avoid problems.

Vriends suggests an appropriate diet to maintain health including the types of seeds cockatiels should eat, their vitamin requirements and vegetable preferences, and daily water intake. Vriends says the following, "No matter how hard you try, you cannot give your cockatiels the type or great variety of food they would find in the natural habitat. Birds in cages and aviaries should therefore be given a menu that is as high as possible in quality and variety...In the last few years, 'easy -to-feed pellet diets have become very popular. These types of diets can be placed in clean feeders or dispensers, and the birds can eat when and as they choose....Extruded diets are not new...but they are the newest alternative for pet birds...a cockatiel [..] that has spent it's life feeding on a diet consisting largely of seeds is not likely to become suddenly enthusiastic about extruded diets and/or pellets. Converting a bird to such a diet can sometimes be a difficult task and may require much patience. The best method...(goes on to explain his method)..." I understood Dr. Vriends to be saying pragmatic things, not championing seeds over pellets as another reviewer suggested.

Dr. Vriends also discusses the upside and downside of whether to have more than one cockatiel and how your cockatiel might relate to children and other pets. He includes a number of photographs of children holding apparently content and loving cockatiels. He suggests ways you can interact with and protect your bird including training tips, sleeping requirements, and toys.

3 out of 5 stars Inaccurate food information.......2003-01-06

This book has wonderful pictures but that's not what counts. I was leafing through it in the bookstore and I found some outdated information. Firstly, the author recommends a mostly seed diet with some veggies, fruits, and pellets. It is now known that seeds are fattening and should be a small part of the cockatiel diet. Pellets are the main food source. He also said that grit should be in a cockatiel's cage to help digestion. Actually, sick cockatiels may eat too much grit and DAMAGE their digestive system. This guy needs to get the facts straight. The information in this book will subtract years from your bird's life if used.

    2 out of 5 stars Stinks.......2002-12-10

    This guy is wierd,I don't think he's owned a cockatiel in his life!! Not for the first time bird owner because of all the false info. Why 2 stars? It does have a few helpful tips and some cute pictures.OK to have on your shelf but your going to want a better one soon.(Don't buy his lovebird book either}

What a fantastic book! I have read it from cover to cover, and it is my primary resource book. From a discussion of diet, to the different kinds of cockatiels to different behaviors and what they mean as well as some advice on breeding -- wow!

If you have not bought a book about Cockatiels, or even if you have, this book *must* be added to your library.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Cockatiels.......2002-03-28

I am an avian health care advisor and author who offers assistance to those who are thinking about acquiring a bird, or to those are experiencing diffculties with bird/s they already have. My experience with birds and other animals stems back to when I was just a very little girl, but I have foucsed primarily on parrots for the past 11 years.
Nearly two years ago when I was presented with the opportunity to rescue a Cockatiel, and since I lack in experience when it comes to this species, I queried my avian list serv buddies about a good book on Tiels. The response was overwhelmingly that I should get a copy of The Complete Book of Cockatiels by Diane Grindol. I might add that several of those who recommended this book to me have bred Tiels for over 20 years, and although some no longer breed, they own Tiels. I got a copy right away, and I am so glad I did. This is an excellant book for many reasons...
Diane does cover all the topics necessary for someone who is interested in getting a Cockatiel eg. requirementes of the species, and the topics a beginner would find necessary eg. ongoing care, emergencies, etc. but she also includes information that experienced Tiel folks would find very interesting eg. visual sexing and genetics. The cover is so beautiful, and is one of a kind as far as I am concerned...it is just beautiful. The pictures inside are not only beautiful but informative as well.
Generally, when I need info. on a particular species, I will go and buy all the books I can find about it, but after reading Diane's book, I didn't do that!

    5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book.......2001-09-26

This book is a wonderful overview of Cockatiels. It covers all the basics: Feeding, behavior, health, basic genetic info, etc. It also has wonderful pictures. I would recommend this book to not only people with cockatiels, but to owners of other parrots, too. Great book!

1 out of 5 stars Out of Date.......2004-08-18

This book is out of date- just look at some of the pictures- and not a good book for a novice cockatiel owner keeping one bird as a companion. I suppose it is a good book for breeding, but I only want a pet. Many of the much thinner books on cockatiels available in pet stores have superior and more up to date material.

1 out of 5 stars Outdated "encyclopedia" not a good source for avian info.......2004-01-08

The information in this book is out of date and in many cases, harmful to your pet if you practice any of it. This book advocates clipping only one wing to tame a bird which is dangerous in practice- it makes a bird more prone to injury when it takes flight. It also encourages misinformation about bird health; the book asserts that healthy cockatiels look healthy. In reality, sick birds do their best to hide their sicknesses because they are naturally prey animals. Other practices akin to phrenology in this book are simply invalid today. I would not recommend this for a new owner or anyone in need of practical advice for raising or caring for a cockatiel. While some of the information is correct, there is also enough misinformation to make an inexperienced owner a danger to their pets.

At least the pictures are cute, so it's not a total loss.

    5 out of 5 stars Informative, clear.......2001-10-15

It was easy to understand and everthing covered in this book was stated mater-of-factly. It had info on colors, maintenance, breeding, basic genetics, problems, courting and mating behaviours, some health issues, babies, and the cockatiel in general. This book was strongest on the subject of breeding but it lacked info on newer, more rare mutations. Over all this book is perfect for novice and experienced breeders as a sorce to refer to when questions arise. It would make a great companion to a cockatiel book that stresses more of the do's and don'ts of first time bird owning for the first time cockatiel owner.

5 out of 5 stars this would be a very short review, ¡IT'S EXELENT!.......1999-04-06

WE LIKED YOUR BOOK A LOT IT IS REALLY VERY HELPFULLWHILE YOU ARE RAISING BABIES COCKATIELS I SPECIALY LIKED THAT YOU TELL AT WHAT TEMPERATURE THE BABIES HAVE TO BE AND YOU TEACHED US HOW TO FEED THEM, BUT IN THE CHAPTER OF COLORS YOU SHOULD USE PHOTOGRAPHS ON COLOR AND PUT MORE COCKATIEL PHOTO THAN OTHER KINDS OF BIRDS BUT THE ALL OTHER PART OF THE BOOK IS REALLY REALLY GREAT AND I THINK IT IS INTERESTING, WELL IS GREAT THAT WE HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW IT ,THANKS I AM RELLY THANKED TO YOU.

5 out of 5 stars Help for cockatiel owners.......2006-11-06

I am a recent cockatiel owner and this book helped answer many of my questions. I refer to the book often and it has been invaluable.

3 out of 5 stars Good basic information.......2002-10-01

Though I have owned three Budgies before, I had never previously owned a Cockatiel,(I recently bought two) so I bought this book to learn a little more about them. It was a good, basic book, but I would not recommend this book to a seasoned owner, as they would almost most certainley not learn anything new. I would, however, recommend this book to a first time bird owner, as they would learn a great deal.

    4 out of 5 stars Cockatiels(Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).......2001-08-21

I'm a new cockatiel owner my husband got it for me for a birthday present actually early birthday present. I have read and re read the book over and over again. I still enjoy it.Also I look for information on cockatiels on the internet so I feel pretty well set on information I need.I got the bird on August 13,2001 from a breeder in town. He's a emerald cockatiel which is a recessive gene mutation. His name is Tristan Jade and I call him "Jade" for short.I have really enjoyed him tremendously :)Cockatiels are amazing birds! This book has all the things I needed to know.If you miss something then you can look it up in the index at the back of the book or read the pages over. You will see something you missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for beginners.......2000-07-26

If you've owned cockatiels for a long time, this book is not for you. But if you're just beginning, like me, this book gives a great overview of all the things you need to consider when buying and taking care of a cockatiel. This book gives you basic information about feeding, maintenance, and characteristics of this great bird. By giving a brief and user friendly introduction to cockatiels, the author allows you to find the areas which require additional research based on your situation. Overall I'd say this book deserves an A++.

1 out of 5 stars Tiel Tips on this book.......2000-06-14

For some great advice email me at humorgirl86@hotmail.com. I have owned a cockatiel for 8 years and have alot of expierience. This book is informative on housing, feeding, breeding and healing. It has great pictures but, it's not the pictures that make the book it's the words! It doesn't go into great detail about everything. It hardly has a page on training and that doesn't even help if at all. Sure it may seem good but once you read it, it really isn't that good at all. I say that you should go to the pet store or book store and actually read the book or scan it to make sure that it has what you want. Petsmart and Petco are great pet stores that have plenty of books and all the needs for a cockatiel.
