You Won't Be a Dummy after You've Read It.......2007-10-12
There couldn't be a better person to simplify cockatiel ownership into a "For Dummies" book than Diane Grindol. She is the author of "The Complete Book of Cockatiels," which you will want to get to complete your education if this one whets your appetite. The book is organized in an especially helpful way, listing first the joys of cockatiel ownership, then the hazards and diseases, then finishing up with a summary of do's and don'ts. In the process, you'll learn the not-so-obvious differences between males and females, the importance of diet, the gauntlet of avian diseases, setting up the cage, travel, grooming...in short, everything you'll need to know. When you reach the end of this informative and readable book, you will never view a cockatiel the same again. You will see complexity, fragility, intellect, and camaraderie, where before you saw only ornate plumage. If you read this book in preparation for cockatiel ownership, your new friend will find hundreds of ways to thank you.

A Must Have in your library as a bird owner........2007-08-13
After adopting two older birds I have read or purchased several of the recommended books for parrot care. Yet, I found myself recently with a very sick little pionus. (Hear what this book says about seed diets and nutrition, please!!! They really mean it when they say it's more expensive long run to NOT do preventative health care!) After a terrible few days I found myself driving to the Bay Area to Dr. Speer's office. It's been a month or so since the emergency surgery, my little girl is healing very well, and now I am avidly reading this book.
The information in it is basic and easily accessible, yet it is information not offered in brightly colored behavior books that sell so well. Why is a seed diet not a good choice? They explain it. Why are fragrances and non-stick cookware so bad? They give you the reason. How do I administer first aid to my parrots and what should I use to do it? They give you the info without a sales pitch. If you want good, solid information from an amazing vet (with a great sense of humor) this is the book to get. Truly, I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Another very good beginner book! .......2007-03-27
My hubbie and I have been petsitting his uncle's macaw. We didn't understand why she was so aggresive mainly trying to bite and why she screeched all the time. We needed information. So I picked up this book and a Guide to a well-behaved parrot. They are both really good beginner books. This book had alot more information than the guide did on some things. I can't go through every chapter but I'll go through the most important ones.
Chapter 1 and 2 are about are you ready for a bird? What type are you looking for. Things you need to consider size, noise level, How much of a mess you can stand. Chapter 4 deals with the basics cage, perches, toys for your bird (I liked the cheap toys section) I actually used some of the ideas.
Chapter 5 Starting your bird off right. The best information I got out of this chapter was control your bird's comings and goings. I was letting baby D (macaw's name) get out of her cage herself and letting her roam the top of her cage. She was getting aggresive since I've stopped doing this her aggresiveness has lessened significantly.
Chapter 6 talks about the right foods for your birds. I agree that for birds such as macaws they need a variety of foods. With parakeets though I don't think it's such a bad thing. I have two parakeets I've tried to introduce them to fruit, and vegetables. They just won't touch it.
Chapter 7 understanding a bird's body language. This chapter also deals with trimming a bird's nails, clipping their wings,& bathing your bird.
Chaper 10 It deals with problems that might arise such as if your bird gets sick or injured.
Chapter 12 dealing with behavior problems such as aggresiveness. It talks about height ( how it can affect a bird's behavior), & Using the wobble technique to deal with the nipping. In the Guide to a well behaved parrot it talked more about screeching and some solutions that might help.
All in all this book had more basic stuff than the guide did but if you are searching for how to stop behavior problems get the guide.
Great Reference Book.......2006-11-06
My avian vet suggested this book. I have two birds and am somewhat of a novice. This book has a ton of information from selecting a bird to traveling with your bird, feeding, healthcare, and behavior. I recommend this book to all humans owned by a bird! It's concise, clever and easy to read. If you care about your avian friend, you should have a great reference book near-by, and this one is great.
Very helpful! Easy to understand!!.......2005-02-08
This book is a MUST for anyone considering a bird, or a new bird owner. I just bought a small Souance conure, and needed some help. My vet suggested I buy this book, and it has taught me so much!!! MUST BUY FOR ANY BIRD OWNER OR LOVER, novice or expert.
Perfect book for a bird dummy like me!.......2002-11-30
This is a great book with a lot of info. It helped me to understand right away that "I" was the cause of a problem I was having with my bird and set me on the right path in correcting that problem! I wish I had bought this book months ago when I got the bird and I would not be going through the problems I am right now with him.
If you are thinking of buying a bird, buy THIS book FIRST! It will even help you pick out the right bird for you and your family.

how to protect an invention; not how to make one.......2005-03-01
The book offers a good explanation to the tyro of what it takes to protect your invention. The book is not really about inventing, per se. Despite what the title says. A careful read of the contents reveals relatively little discussion about the raw inventing process. That is, how does one come up with an original idea that can be patentable? It may well be that such a question has no answer.
Rather, the book's contribution is to show the reader that, if you make something that you think is worth patenting, what are the necessary steps to do so. It explains how you can protect your invention from others. It focuses on steps that can be specifically described to you, and then performed by you. Like how to file a Provisional Patent Application. And how you can now do this electronically. (Which wasn't always the case.) While some of these steps are unique to the United States, in general they apply in most countries.
There is also a brief discussion about copyright issues in the book. But it is tangential to the main topic.

The Perfect All-Around Bird Book.......2007-01-10
As a beginning bird watcher, "Bird Watching for Dummies" has been very helpful and informative. There are color illustrations for bird identifications, back yard plans for attracting various song birds, and feeder tips. All bird species are recognized and useful information is provided for each. The author's wit and humor makes reading this book a pleasure.
general guide.......2006-08-28
This is a general guide for beginners to this hobby, but not exactly what I was looking for.It is ok, but probably not worth the time or money, there are lots of better books out there about this hobby.
Okay but not exactly what I wanted........2005-09-29
One problem with buying books online is that loss of the chance to flip through and check the contents. Good book, just not exactly what I was looking for.
Informative, fun to read, every birder needs it!.......2001-05-29
I have never spent my money on a better book! This book got me into birdwatching and nature. In "Bird Watching for Dummies," Bill Thompson, III introduces you to his passion of observing birds. The book is filled with information and tips on which optics, field guides, bird seed, and books to buy, and very useful tips on how to observe bird behavior, identification, and attracting birds to your yard with food, water, shelter, and plants. If you are thinking about becoming a bird watcher, you must buy this book- if I could give it sixty stars, I would.
The dummy speaks.......1998-11-25
I have thoroughly enjoyed Bill Thompson's book. It's rare when you can find a book that is so informational and completely entertaining as well. I love the sensitivity of the drawings throughout. I intend to use this book quite often; in fact I am currently building a bluebird nesting box. Birdwathchers most likely have the stigma of being eggheads, but this book certainly wouldn't lend credence to that (comparing a bluebird's love of worms to Homer Simpson's doughnut cravings is pure delight). Anyone at all interested in our feathered friends would enjoy reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
The author, Nikki Moustaki is very knowlegable about these wonderful birds........2007-07-29
This book starts off with one of my pet peeves - giving the name American Parakeet to the sweet little Australian Budgie or Budgerigar. They are not American birds at all - although they certainly are one of many different parakeets.
The author, Nikki Moustaki is very knowlegable about these wonderful birds. She gives excellent advice on deciding if a budgie is right for your home.
Throughout the book, markings in the margins indicate interesting and helpful tips, warnings and reminders.
The chapter "Polly Want a Cracker?" has excellent advice on feeding your budgie. Of course variety is essential and Nikki gives a great list of foods to provide interest and variety.
The chapter "Come Here Often?" provides great information to help you understand common budgie behaviours, including some problem behaviours. The author also provides great taming and training advice here.
It is obvious while reading this book that Nikki Moustaki loves these little birds. She talks about her own Parakeets/Budgies as examples, telling us what they enjoy. This is a great book for beginners and even experienced budgie owners may find information that they didn't know before.
